#8b. Yasoda

Kali yuga was about to begin. Krishna had been struck on his foot by an arrow shot by a hunter. Raamaa had killed Vaali in Raama avatar hidden away from his sight. Vaali had cursed that Raamaa would suffer the same fate and be killed by an arrow of a hunter hidden from his view.

A hunter saw the lovely foot of Krishna and mistook it to be a bird. He shot an arrow and Krishna lay there in deep pain. Everyone who loved him was in pain too. He told them,”You may change back to your original forms and return to your abodes, since I am also going to return to Vaikuntham.”

Yasoda came to Krishna and asked for a boon.”In every avatar you must allow me to be your mother!” Krishna granted her the boon and told her, “In kali yuga I will reside in Seshaachalam. Mother! Please go there and wait for my arrival as my mother VaguLa Maalika”

6#2b. விருத்திராசுரன் (1)

“அளிப்பேன் அவிர் பாகம் உனக்கும் நான்;
அளிப்பேன் யாகப் பசுவின் தலையை நான்!”

இந்திரன் ஆசை காட்டினான் விஸ்வகர்மாவுக்கு;
இந்திரனின் திட்டம் பலித்துப் பலன் அளித்தது!

மறந்தான் விஸ்வகர்மா நீதி நன்நெறிகளை!
துறந்தான் அறிவை; வெட்டினான் சிரங்களை!

வெளிப்பட்டது ஒரு நெருப்புக் கோழி
உலகைத் திரிசிரன் கண்டுவந்த முகத்தில்!

வெளிப்பட்டது ஒரு அழகிய மாடப்புறா
சுரபானம் செய்த திரிசிரன் முகத்தில் இருந்து!

வெளிப்பட்டது ஒரு மீன் கொத்திப் பறவை
வேதங்கள் ஓதிய திரிசிரன் முகத்தில் இருந்து.

பிரம்மஹத்தி தோஷத்துக்கு அஞ்சவில்லை இந்திரன்
பிரம்மாண்ட பலசாலி திரிசிரனை வீழ்த்திய பின்னர்.

‘அநியாயமாகக் கொல்லப் பட்டான் திரிசிரன்!’
அறிந்தவுடன் கோபம் கொண்டான் துவஷ்டா.

படைக்கின்றேன் இந்திரனைக் கொல்லும் மகனை ;
உடைக்கின்றேன் இந்திரன் கர்வத்தை இப்போதே!”

உக்கிரமான யாகம் செய்தான் துவஷ்டா பிரஜாபதி;
அக்கினி உருவத்துடன் தோன்றினான் ஒருவன்!

“இந்திரன் பகைவனே! நீ விருத்தி அடைவாய் !’
விருத்தி அடைவாய் என் தவ வலிமையால்! என

ஆகாயம் வரை உயர்ந்து பரந்து வளர்ந்தான்;
அக்னி வடிவாகத் தோன்றிய விருத்திராசுரன்!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி

6#2b. Viruthraasuran (1)

Indra tempted Viswakarma with perks and benefits now. “I shall give you, your share of havisu in every yaagam. I shall present you with the head of the animal scarificed in every yaagam!”

Viswakarma needed no more tempting and cut off the three heads of Thrisiran very promptly. An ostrich emerged from the face with which Trisiran was observing the world.

A dove emerged from the face with which Trisiran used to drink Sura paanam. A kingfisher emerged from the third face which used to chant the Vedaas.

Indra was not laid down by the sin of brahma hatthi dosham. He was happy that he had got rid of his powerful enemy Viswaroopan also known as Trisiran.

When Thvashta Prajaapati learned about the treacherous manner in which Indra had killed his son Trisiran, he became very angry. He swore that he would create a son who would kill Indra his mortal enemy.

Thvashta performed a terrible yaagaa seeking a powerful son who could kill Indra. A fiery son appeared from the fire and grew bigger and bigger till he stood scaling the heaven and the earth.

Since he grew with the power of Thvashta he was named as Viruthraasuran.

“உன் பொய் உருவங்களைக் காட்டினாய்.
என் மெய் உருவத்தைக் காண்பாய்!”

உலகங்கள், திக்குகள், கடல்கள்
உயிர்கள், தேவர்கள் அனைத்தும் உள்ள

உடல் ஒன்றை எடுத்தான் முருகன்.
உண்மையைச் சூரன் உணரும்படி.

இருந்தன மலைகள் உள்ளடிகளில்.
இருந்தன கடல்கள் புறவடிகளில்.

இருந்தன விண்மீன்கள் விரல்களில்.
இருந்தான் வருணன் பரட்டில்.

இருந்தனர் முனிவர் கணைக்காலில்.
இருந்தனர் வித்யாதரர் முழந்தாளில்.

இருந்தான் தொடையில் இந்திரன்
இருந்தான் தொடை மூலத்தில் காலன்.

இருந்தனர் அரையில் அவுணர்கள்
இருந்தனர் விலாவில் அமரர்கள்.

இருந்தனர் மூலாதாரத்தில் நாகர்கள்
இருந்தது அமுதம் ஆண்குறியில்

இருந்தன நாபியில் உயிர்த்தொகை.
இருந்தன மயிர்களில் உலகங்கள்.

இருந்தனர் தோள்களில் மால், பிரமன்.
இருந்தனர் கைவிரல்களில் தேவமகளிர்

இருந்ததன மறைகள் திருவாயில்
இருந்தது பேருருவம் வியக்கும்படி.

அஞ்சிய அமரர்க்கு ஆறுமுகன்
அஞ்சேல் என அருள் செய்தான்.

4 # 13i. Murugan’s viswaroopam.

“You showed me your false forms. Now look at my true form!” Murugan told Soorapadman and assumed his viswaroopam.

All the worlds, all the living things, all the devas, all the oceans and all the direction could be seen in his viswaroopam.

The mountains were seen under his feet, the oceans on his feet, the stars were on his toes, Varunan was seen on .

The rushis were seen on his ankles, the Vidhyadaras on his knees, Indra was on his thigh, kaalan was on his groin, asuras were on his waist, devas were on his ribs, naagas were on his moolaadaaram, amrita was in his genitals, the living things were on his naval, the worlds were on his hair, Brahma and Vishnu were on his shoulders, apsaras were on his fingers, The Vedas were in his mouth.

Even Deva got frightened to see the viswaroopam. Murugan removed their fear.

8c. இருவரும் ஒருவரே!

கண நேரத்தில் உணர்ந்தாள் தான் யாரென!
“கண்ணா! ” என அணைத்தாள் அன்புடன்!

“அநாதைகள் அல்ல இனி நாம் என் மகனே!
அநாதி காலமாக உள்ளது நமது உறவு!” என

அழைத்துச் சென்றாள் இனிக்கும் ஓடைக்கு;
பழுத்த கனிகளைப் பறித்து உண்ணத் தந்தாள்.

“இனிமேல் இருந்துவிடு நீ என்னுடனேயே
தனியாக முன்போல் தவிக்க வேண்டாம்!”

“வந்து பார் நான் தாங்கும் இடத்தை!” என்று
சிந்தை மகிழ்ந்து அழைத்தார் ஸ்ரீநிவாசன்

புற்றுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றார் அவளை;
புற்றினுள் காட்டினர் தம் இருப்பிடத்தை!

வராஹ பெருமானை வணங்கச் சென்றாள்,
வகுள மாலிகை தினமும் செய்வது போல.

“வழக்கதை விடத் தாமதமாக வந்துள்ளாய்!
வழக்கத்தை விட நீ ஆனந்தமாக உள்ளாய்!”

வம்புக்கு இழுத்தார் அந்த வகுள மாலிகையை,
அன்புடன் அவள் தொழும் வராஹ பெருமான்!

ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் கதையைக் கூறினாள் அவள்.
“ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் வேறு, நான் வேறு அல்ல!

அங்கே அவனுக்கு நீ செய்யும் தொண்டு
இங்கே எனக்கு இனி வந்து சேர்ந்து விடும்.

கவனிப்பாய் நீ ஸ்ரீனிவாசனின் தேவைகளை.
கலியுக முடிவில் சேர்வாய் என் பாதங்களை!”

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#8c. “We are one and the same!”

VaguLa Maalikaa realized her true identity immediately and embraced Srinivaasan with great affection. “We are not orphans any more. We have always had each other, my dear son!”

She led him to a fresh water fountain. She plucked the ripe fruits and gave them to him. “You don’t have to live alone any longer. I will be with you to take care of you!” Srinivaasan took her to his anthill and showed her its spacious interior.

VaguLa Maalika went to worship her lord Aadi Varaaha moorthy. It was later than her usual visiting time. God made fun of her and asked, “What is the matter? Today you have come later than usual. You also appear to be happier than usual!”

VaguLa maalika told him the story of Srinivaasan. Aadi Varaaha moorthy told her, “We both are one and the same. Whatever you offer to Srinivaasan will be reaching me here too. You serve him well and take care of him. You will merge with me at the end of Kali yuga.”

“சோகம் கொண்டது ஏன் தந்தையே? உங்கள்
சோகத்தை போக்க செய்வேன் எதையும் நான்!

குடிக்க வேண்டுமா கடல் நீர் முழுவதையும்?
பொடிக்க வேண்டுமா மலைகளைக் குன்றுகளை?

திசை மாறச் செய்ய வேண்டுமா சூரியனை?
திக்பாலகரோடு அழிக்க வேண்டுமா இந்திரனை?

தலை கீழாகத் தூக்க வேண்டுமா உலகத்தை?
தண்ணீரில் மூழ்கடிக்க வேண்டுமா உலகத்தை?”

“விருத்தி அடைந்தாய் என் சக்தியால் – நீ
விருத்திராசுரன் என்ற பெயர் பெறுவாய்!

திரிசிரன் உனக்கு அண்ணன், என் மூத்த மகன்;
திரிசிரனைக் கொன்றான் இந்திரன் தயையின்றி!

அறுத்து எறிந்தான் தவ சீலனின் தலைகளை!
அழிப்பாய் இந்திரனை நீ சென்று, வென்று!”

அளித்தான் குறையாத அம்பறாத் துணி;
அளித்தான் கதை, தனுசு, சூலம், தோமரம்.

அளித்தான் ஒரு கவசமும், அழகிய தேரும்,
அளித்தான் ஆசிகள் போரில் வெற்றி பெற.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

6#2c. Viruthraasuran (2)

Viruthraasuran asked Thvashta Prajaapati, “Why are you so sad my dear father? I will do anything to make you come out of your sorrow. Do I need to drink up all the water in the oceans? Do I need to break into power all the hills and mountains?

Do I need to make the Sun change is direction of travel? Need I destroy Indra along with his ashta dik paalakaas? Do I need to lift the earth upside down or drown it in water?”

Thvashtaa became happy to hear these words and replied to his son, “You grew up immensely by my power. You will be aptly called as Viruthraasuran from now on.

You had an elder brother Viswaroopan. He was mercilessly murdered by Indra when he was in deep meditation. He killed your elder brother and cut off his three heads. I shall avenge this murder with your help.

Thvashta presented Viruthraasuran with a bow and inexhaustible supply of arrows, a mace, a soolam and a thomaram. He also presented his son with an armor and a chariot. He blessed him and said, “Go forth and avenge the death of my elder son Viswaroopan!”

13j. சூரபத்மனின் மாற்றம்.

முருகன் தந்த நல்லுணர்வால்
உருகினான் ஒருகணம் சூரபத்மன்!”

சிறுவன் என நான் நினைத்திருந்த
ஒருவன் இதோ என்முன் நிற்கின்றான்!

உலகங்களையும், உயிர்களையும்
உள்ளடக்கி உயர்ந்து நிற்கின்றான்.

தூதுவன் சொன்னான் என்னிடம் அன்றே
தூய பரம்பொருள் ஆவான் இவன் என்றே!

ஆயிரத்தெட்டு அண்டங்களும் இவன்
அடித்தாமரையில் அடங்கி விட்டனவே!

காணக் கண்கள் ஒரு கோடி வேண்டுமே!
காமனை வெல்லும் அழகன் முருகனை!

பொருத நினைந்து இவன் வந்ததும்
அருளின் வெளிப்பாடு என்பது உறுதி!

சினம் தீர்ந்தது , ஊக்கம் குறைந்தது,
சிந்தின கண்கள் ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீர்.

உருகியது உள்ளம், பிறந்தது அன்பு,
உண்டானது அறிவு, அகன்றது மமதை.

தவத்தின் பயன் இவன் தரிசனமே!
தீவினை நீங்கி நல்வழி சேருவேன்!

வலம் வரவேண்டும் என் கால்களால்
வணங்க வேண்டும் என் கரங்களால்.”

நல்லுணர்வு நீங்கியது முன் போலவே!
பொல்லாத ஆணவம் தலை தூக்கியது.

பேருருவை நீக்கி ஆறுமுகன் தன்
சிறுவன் வடிவத்தைக் கொண்டான்.

 4 # 13. j. Dawn of the Truth!

Murugan gave Soorapadman some good sense. Soorapadman became completely transformed now. He thought to himself thus:

“The boy who I thought was any ordinary child stands before me now in his viswaroopam. Everything in the creation can be seen in his body.

The messenger told me long ago that Murugan is the true God of Gods.
All the 1008 universes I rule over lie under his lotus feet.

I need ten million eyes to drink the beauty of this god who will put to shame Manmathan himself. He has come to fight with me only to shower his grace on me!"

Soorapadman’s heart melted with love. His valor was gone, his anger disappeared, his pride was destroyed and tears of joy rolled from his eyes.

“I must do pradakshiNam to this holy boy. I must do namsakaram with my hands and bend my head in front of him.”

Murugan removed the good sense and Soorapadman became his original haughty and arrogant-self in a minute.
 
தங்க நகை வெள்ளி நகை ரத்தினமிழைத்த நகை
தையலர்கள் அணியாமலும்,
விலை குறைந்த ஆடைகள் அணிந்துமே
கோவில் வர வேண்டுமென்று பாதிரி
விடுத்த ஒரு செய்தியால்,
கோவிலை விஷமென்று வெறுத்தார்கள்
பெண்கள், புருஷர்!

நிலை கண்ட பாதிரி பின்
கை, காது , மூக்கு, செவி, உதடு, கழுத்து,
நிறைய நகை போடலாம்,
கோவிலில் முகம் பார்க்க
நிலைக் கண்ணாடியும் உண்டென்று
இலை போட்டழைத்ததும்,
நகை போட்ட பக்தர்கள்
எல்லாரும் வந்து சேர்ந்தார்!

இயேசு நாதர் மட்டும்
அங்கு வரவில்லையே!
என் இனிய பாரத தேசமே!!

இது, பாரதிதாசன் பாடல் என்று நினைவு. தெரிந்தவர்கள் யாரேனும், இது யார் பாடிய கவிதை என்று எடுத்துச் சொன்னால் நன்றாக இருக்கும்!

மிக அழகான கவிதை. விளக்கம் கொடுக்க வேண்டிய அவசியமே இல்லை.

என்ன ஒரு எள்ளல்! என்ன ஒரு துள்ளல் கவிதையில்!

கோவிலுக்குப் போவதென்பது மிகப் பலருக்கு, ஒரு பொழுதுபோக்குதான் என்பதை மிக அழகாகச் சொல்லும் கவிதை. யாருமே கோவிலுக்கு வரவில்லையென்றால், அந்த பாதிரியாரோ, மற்ற குருமார்களோ என்ன செய்வார்கள்? அவர்களது வயிற்றுப் பிழைப்பு என்னாவது? அதனையும் கொஞ்சம் எள்ளலுடன் பார்க்கும் கவிதை. இவர்கள் அத்தனை பேரும், அழகாக நகை அணிந்து, கோவிலுக்குப் போய்தான் என்ன? வர வேண்டிய அந்தக் கடவுள் அங்கே வரவில்லையே என்ற அந்த அழகிய சொடுக்கு! அழகு!!

9a. ஆகாச ராஜன்

திரிந்தான் பைசாச உருவில் சோழராஜன்;
பிறந்தான் பூவுலக வாழ்வை நீத்த பிறகு,

நாராயணபுரத்தை ஆண்டு கொண்டிருந்த
நல்ல மன்னன் சுதர்மனின் முதல் மகனாக.

ஆகாச ராஜன் என்ற பெயரை வைத்தனர்.
அன்புடன் அவனைப் பேணி வளர்த்தனர்.

பிறகு பிறந்தது இன்னொரு ஆண் மகவு;
பெயர் விளங்கியது தொண்டைமான் என.

ஒற்றுமையாக வளர்ந்தனர் இருவரும்;
போற்றினர் அனைவரும் இருவரையும்.

சுதர்மன் விரும்பினான் வனவாசம் செல்ல;
சுபமாக மணிமுடி தரித்தான் ஆகாசராஜன்.

இளவரசுப் பட்டம் கிட்டியது இளையவனுக்கு;
இருவரும் ஏற்றனர் தந்தையின் விருப்பத்தை.

உயர்குலப் பெண்களை மணந்து கொண்டனர்;
பெயர் விளங்கும்படி நிர்வகித்தனர் நாட்டினை.

உருண்டோடின வருடங்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றாக,
பெருகின வளமும், நலமும் அந்த நாட்டில்.

ஆனந்தம் கொண்டிருந்தனர் அனைவருமே
ஆகாச ராஜன் என்னும் மன்னனைத் தவிர!

குழந்தை ஒன்று இல்லை கொஞ்சுவதற்கு!
குழந்தை ஒன்றில்லை முத்தாடுவதற்கு!

“இப்பிறவியில் செய்யவில்லை ஒரு பாதகம்;
முற்பிறவியில் செய்ததை யாம் அறிகிலோம்.

குலகுரு சுகர் அறிவார் மூன்று காலத்தையும்.
குலகுரு கூறுவார் நல்வழி ஒன்றை நமக்கு!”

அரசி ஆலோனை கூறினாள் அரசனுக்கு;
அரசன் அழைத்து வரச் சொன்னான் சுகரை.

பல்லக்குச் சென்றது சுகரை அழைத்துவர,
சொல்லுக்கு வல்லவர் சுகர் அங்கு வந்தார்.

9a. Aakaasa Raajan

The Chozha king spent the rest of his life roaming around as a ghost. In his next birth he was born as the son of king Sudharman ruling Naaraayana Puram. He was fondly named as Aaakaasa Raajan.

He got a younger brother later on who was named as ThoNdaimaan. The two sons grew up well and were very much attached to each other. After reaching a ripe old age, King Sudharman wanted to go for vana vaasam.

He crowned his elder son Aakaasa Raajan as the new king. ThoNdaimaan became the prince. They both married suitable princesses and ruled the country well.

Years rolled by and their country was very fertile and rich. Everyone was happy except the king and the queen. They were sad since they did not have any children.

The Queen told the king, “We have not committed any sin in this birth. But we do not know what we had done in our previous births. Our kula guru sage Sukar knows all the three tenses and will surely guide us appropriately.”

The king sent his men with a palanquin to bring his kula guru Sage Sukar to his palace with due honor.

6#3a. விருத்திராசுரன் தவம் (1)

ஆசிகள் கூறினார் துவஷ்டப் பிரஜாபதி;
ஆசிகள் கூறினர் அங்கு வந்த அந்தணர்.

ஆயுதங்கள் ஏந்தித் திரண்டு வந்தனர்
அதுவரை ஒளிந்து வாழ்ந்த அசுரவீரர்.

விரைந்தனர் தூதர்கள் இந்திரன் சபைக்கு
உரைத்தனர்,”ராஜனே! கேள் இச் செய்தியை.

வருகின்றான் பலவானான பகைவன் ஒருவன்;
உருவானவன் துவஷ்டவின் அபிசார யாகத்தில்.

அஞ்சி ஒளிந்திருந்த அசுர வீர்கள் மீண்டும் திரண்டு
எஞ்சிவிடாமல் சேர்ந்துள்ளனர் அவன் தலைமையில்.

மேரு மலை போன்ற உருவம் கொண்டுள்ளான்!
பெருங் குரலோசையே அழித்து விடும் நம்மை!

பெரு முயற்சி செய்ய வேண்டிய வேளை இது;
வெறுமனே அமர்ந்திருப்பதற்கு அல்ல!” என்றனர்

“துர்ச்சகுனங்கள் தோன்றுகின்றன சுவர்க்கத்தில்;
கோர சப்தங்கள் எழுகின்றன நாற்புறங்களிலும்!

அரக்கியர் அச்சுறுத்துகின்றனர் கனவில் வந்து
மிரட்டுகின்றன பூகம்பம், தூமகேது முதலியவை!”

சென்றான் குலகுரு பிருஹஸ்பதியிடம் இந்திரன்
சொன்னான் தூதர்கள் மொழிந்தவற்றை அவருக்கு.

“வழி காட்டி உதவுங்கள் எங்களுக்குக் குருதேவா!
வருகின்ற ஆபத்திலிருந்து தப்புவதற்கு” என்றான்.

இந்திரனைப் பார்த்தார் ஏற இறங்கக் குலகுரு;
நொந்த உள்ளத்துடன் அவனிடம் பேசலுற்றார்.

6#3a. Viruthraasuran’s penance (1)

Thvasta Prajaapati blessed Viruthraasuran. So did the brahmins who had came there. The asura warriors who were living in hiding gathered under his leadership. They set to swargga lokam.

The messengers of Indra gave him this message,” Oh king of heaven! An enemy is invading swargga. He is as big as the Mount Meru. He has been created by Thvashta through an abichaara yaagaa.

All the asuraas who were living in hiding have come out and joined with him. His loud voice is enough to disturb and damage heaven. Now it is the time to prepare for a war and not sit idly wasting time.”

The other Devaas said, “Bad omens have become frequent in heaven. Weird noises are heard in all the four directions. The hideous Raakshasis appear in our nightmares. Tremors are felt and comets are seen very often”

Indra got worried and went to Bruhaspati to consult him. The Devaguru was not happy with these developments and started talking to Indra.

13k. மீண்டும் போர்!

பழைய பகைமையும் சினமும் பிறந்தன!
பழைய ஊக்கமும் வீரமும் வளர்ந்தன !

“கள்ளன் என் மனத்தை மயக்கி விட்டான் .
கற்ற மாய வித்தையைக் காட்டிவிட்டான் .

தேவர்களையும் வெல்வேன்! சிறுவனையும்!
தேவர்கள் கலங்கச் சூளுரைத்தான் சூரன்.

மாய மறையை ஓதினான் – இருண்ட
மாய வடிவு எடுத்துக் கொண்டான்.

சிரங்கள், கரங்கள் பல கொண்டுள்ள
கோர வடிவுடன் சூரன் ஆர்ப்பரித்தான் .

விண்ணுக்கும், மண்ணுக்குமாக நின்று
உண்ண விரும்பினான் அமரர்களை.

கூரிய வேலிடம் கூறினான் குமரன்,
“சூரனின் மார்பைப் பிளந்து மீளுக!”

ஆயிரம் கோடி ஆதவர் ஒளியுடன்
ஆர்வத்துடன் விரைந்தது வேற்படை.

மாயை நீங்கியது இருள் விலகியது!
தீயைப் போன்ற செந்நிறத் தளிர்களும்,

பச்சை நிறத்தில் மெல்லிய காற்றில்
புகை போன்று சலசலக்கும் இலைகளும்,

பொன் போன்ற மலர்க் கொத்துக்களும்,
விண்முகில் போன்ற பரந்த கிளைகளும்,

மரகத மணிப் பச்சையில் காய்களும்,
மாணிக்க மணிச் சிவப்பில் கனிகளும்,

நிறைந்த மாமர வடிவெடுத்தான் சூரன்.
நூறாயிரம் யோஜனை அகன்றிருந்தான் !

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.
 
KANDA PURAANAM - PORPURI KAANDAM

 4 # 13. k. The mango tree!

Soorapadman became as arrogant, angry and valorous as before. He told to himself, “This boy confused my mind using his maayaa tricks! I will defeat the Devas and him as well!”

Sooran chanted a mantra and assumed a huge dark form. He developed several hands and heads and stood as tall as the sky. He wanted to grab and gobble the now tiny Devas.

Murugan did not want to waste any more time. He ordered to his mighty spear “Go and tear open Soorapadman’s chest!”

The spear sped along emitting the light of a thousand crore suns shining together. The darkness disappeared. The maayaa was removed.

Now Sooran transformed himself into an unusual mango tree! The tender leaves of the tree were as red as the tongues of fire. The leaves were ever-rustling and resembled the smoke.

The flower bunches resembled the color of pure molten gold. The raw mangoes resembled the green emeralds. The ripe fruits of the tree were pure carbuncle.

The tree was so huge that it measured one hundred yojanas across.
 
165. But for them….

But for the pitch darkness at night
The glow of the firefly will be lost!

But for the dull glow of the firefly
The twinkling of the stars will be lost!

But for the dull shine of those stars
The cool glow of the moon will be lost!

But for the cool glow of the pale moon
The brilliance of the Sun will be lost!

But for the jargon filling the forest
The charm of a cuckoo will be lost!

But for the dance of an ugly turkey
The grace of peacock will be lost!

But for the worms filling the earth
The beauty of a snake will be lost!

Every gem needs a setting to glow.
Every poem needs the words to flow!

Words piled together do not make a poem
Unless a strong emotion runs through them!

What does touch the heart lives forever.
What is merely a jargon is lost forever.

Imitation is suicide – unless well qualified.
Knowing this requires thoughts to be unified.

Yet Imitation is not a complete waste;
If by its contrast, it enhances the taste!

166. The birth and death of a poet!

Every Poet is born and not made
Unless he is Kalidasa the blessed!

Poetry isn’t the talk of a baby born new.
Nor is poetry is Annaism – old or new!

Poetry requires thinking up new ideas;
Poetry demands arranging those ideas.

Poetry indeed is a linguistic shower;
Poetry requires a vast word power.

One who remains eternally confused,
One who remains eternally deluded,

Daring to write poetry is a mystery!
Choosing where to post it is mastery!

Making sure that they don’t go unread
By posting them in a very busy thread!

Shining in borrowed feathers is the same
As basking in borrowed Sunshine of fame.

Oh! Suddenly the grapes have turned sour!
Ah! Our hopes of saving good poetry soar!

VENKATESA PURAANAM

9b. மரப் பேழை

பல்லக்கில் வந்த குலகுரு சுகரை ஆகாசராஜன்
உள்ளன்போடு வரவேற்றான் அரசியுடன் சென்று.

"அழைத்த காரணம் என்ன அரசே?” என வினவ,
“விழைகின்றோம் மழலைச் செல்வதை யாம்!

பலன் தரவில்லை புரிந்த தான தருமங்கள்;
பலன் தரும் வழியைக் கூறவேண்டும் தங்கள்!”

“புத்திர காமேஷ்டி யாகம் செய்தால் – உனக்கு
உத்திரவாதமாகப் பிறக்கும் குழந்தை!” என

“பொய்க்காது பெரியோரின் ஆசி மொழிகள்;
செய்வோம் யாகத்தைத் தங்கள் ஆசியுடன்”

குறித்தனர் நல்ல நாள் ஒன்றை யாகத்துக்கு;
குவித்தனர் யாகப் பொருட்களைக் கொணர்ந்து.

குழுமினர் வேத விற்பன்னர்கள் யாகம் புரிந்திட
அழைப்புகள் சென்றன அருமை நண்பர்களுக்கு!

உழுதான் ஆகாச ராஜன் அந்த யாக பூமியை,
தொழுத பின்பு இறையையும், குருவையும்.

வேத கோஷம் செய்தனர் வேத விற்பன்னர்கள்.
கீத நாதம் ஒலித்தனர் இசை விற்பன்னர்கள்.

நிலத்தை உழுத ஆகாச ராஜனின் கலப்பை
நின்று விட்டது ஓரிடத்துக்கு வந்தவுடன்.

அழுத்தி உழுதவுடன் எழுந்தது ஒரு சப்தம்;
ஆழத்தில் கலப்பையைத் தடுத்தது எதுவோ!

தோண்டினர் காவலர் நிலத்தை விரைந்து;
கண்டனர் அழகிய ஒரு மரப் பேழையை!

பேழை வந்தது அரசனிடம் பத்திரமாக!
பேழை வீசியது ஓர் அரிய நறுமணத்தை.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி
