Dear RR ji,

Never underestimate the power of a senior citizen!LOL
hi renu,

you are always rite......i think ...u had some experiencex with senior citizen.....senior citizen know many techniques...they

all are well experienced in all matters...lol

hi naina sir,

the list is great and painstaking...thanks....just curious about pricing and affordability....recently my mother joined a retirement home

near chennai....the name is in the list....i dont want name it here...but ok for her...i had a feeling that the colorful

pamplets are than a reality...a lot of colorful ads/brochures....but inside story is different....

Dear Ganesh,

Wow, the PK influence is so much that P J Sir is now P K! :D

Refer your reply to P J Sir, please!

Most of the senior resorts are for making huge money, just like creches.

Now a days, there is an option to stay for a month as a trial period, before finalizing the stay, at some senior resorts. For an

elderly couple in my extended family, we searched for such a resort in Sing. Chennai and nothing was less that Rs. 8,000/ per

month per person. They could not afford that much money and hence opted an old age home at Palakkad. They get brahmin's

food suitable for the elderly and shell out roughly Rs. 3,000/ per month
per person
. This includes accommodation + food.

But, some of the inmates objected to admitting them because that mAmA is a nonagenarian!

A list is great.
But a list with price, quality of life and personal knowledge would be better.

Pricing and affordability are perhaps the elephant in the room. A list with price? No chance. Most of these homes claim considerable operating costs – including, as tbs said, the costs of all those colorful ads and pamphlets and brochures which have to keep up with inflation. So, many will not openly list prices, except perhaps as ball-park estimates. The prices may vary from year to year.

As to quality of life and personal knowledge, the motivation behind starting this thread is perhaps just that - to learn about and share such info through postings from members who have lived in such homes or are currently living there, to come forward to share their experiences. Especially about costs. As tbs remarked above, people will not name the homes under discussion, so the only alternative may be to exchange details through PM. Eventually, some enterprising soul may collate all these postings to constitute as reviews in a website.

Very useful and interesting share!

The senior whom we refer to as 'Casino mAmA' has shared many of his experiences in several senior resorts, with me !

Right now, he is in a posh resort in Bangalore @ Rs. 19,000/ per month but when we visited him, we found the food was not good!

While Nachi Sir is yet to post his experiences, I think I may start posting Casino mAmA's experiences in this thread! :typing:

Sir,

Thanks for all the trouble.

Most of the senior resorts are for making huge money, just like creches.

As I said earlier in my reply to VGane , there is a huge demand for taking care of Senior Citizens all over India especially South India ( mostly TN ) as most of South Indians have migrated abroad for higher studies and career and many of the parents of such people come in the Category of 70+ and these are the people who need lot of services like home cooked food , retirement homes , etc etc and that demand is so huge that there is a big gap between supply and demand and many fly by night operators who operate purely for profit and business motive have entered the scence ( like caterers , old age resot builders etc ) .I am not against people making money but there must be some professionalism and sense of service in delivering these sort of facilities .In fact in TV few months back an Educational Consultant said that it is high time Universties start introducing Courses on Old Age Care so that we can deliver much better trained service personnel to this growing demand of Old Age Care . In the past these sort of Institutions were started by some Individuals with real service motive and they were supported by Philanthropists but now many Real Estate Developers with excess and unproductive land banks are starting these sort of ventures for purely profit motives . As of now Only the Rich who can afford the premium services are getting some decent service and as to the rest it is a tough call .

the person who spent months of her life putting together this document is my sister prof J

in chennai. She visited these homes and interviewed the organisers of the homes. She presented

me a copy of her work in probus club magazine[ she was an active member] on my retirement

As of now Only the Rich who can afford the premium services are getting some decent service and as to the rest it is a tough call .
hi sir,

i had three different old age home exoeriences in and around chennai...im not happy with anyone...but what to do?...

convniences and compromise are the key word....even money is not a big deal....quality of the service as mentioned

in the ads are different...

As we all know aging is inevitable and everyone long for graceful aging. And the secret to achieve graceful ageing lies mostly in the intake I mean the food we take, viz balanced diet. What is important is not the quality of the food but the nutritious value is more important. Food may be delicious, but at the same time it should be also good our health. It is more important that we should keep an eye on our health and be fit to take care of ourselves and dependents too.

When age grows energy diminishes and we become victim to age related ailments like heart problem, arthritis, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, etc

A nice life style, good habits, balanced diet and happy environment are all blessings.

And I hope the retirement homes will guarantee the above.

if money is not a constraint one could opt for homes by TATAs and Paranjape these homes are in

bangalore. Tata are entering into home segment for retirement living in bangalore.

I have seen athasri of paranjape.

they have more north indian, maharashtrian clientele and NRIs.

their flats for senior citizen are nice.they are on sale basis.

I do not know about food. I did not taste.

Most of the retirement communities are gated communities situated in a vast area consisting of acres of land. Only a small portion is used for building houses. The remaining space is used for common facilities and recreational activities.

The quality of food depends on many factors. In our community we have a food committee consisting of the management and the residents which decides the menu and the food to be served. The cost of food in our community is Rs. 4500 per month. The food served is

Morning Coffee

Breakfast

Lunch

Evening Tea and snacks

Dinner

They try to make the food nutritions and wholesome by including different grains like Millet etc. and different Mulikai keerais. Both Chapathi and rice is served so that diabetes patients could take Chapathis.

The residents consist of a number of single males and females. Single males find it easy to stay here. In fact even when there are couples, the husband stays alone at times when the wife goes out for looking after the children. There is a gentleman who cooks his own food. His wife who is supposed t stay here is away most of the time with the children.

A number of people do not come permanently. They come only for a short period and retain their old houses in Chennai or other places.
