#41. திரு புகழ்ச் சோழ நாயனார்

அறநெறி வழுவாமல் அரசாண்டு வந்தார்
உறையூர் தலைநகராகப் புகழ் சோழனார்.

தழைத்து ஓங்கியது சைவ மதம் மீண்டும்!
பிழையின்றி நடந்து வந்தன திருப்பணிகள்.

மாறியது தலைநகரம் பின் உறையூரிலிருந்து;
மாறிவிட்டது சோழத் தலை நகரம் கருவூருக்கு.

அளித்தனர் அரசர்கள் களிப்புடன் கப்பம் - ஆனால்
அளிக்க மறுத்தான் ஒரு குறுநில மன்னன் அதிகன்.

சென்றது பெரும் படை அதிகனுக்கு அறிவுறுத்த;
வென்றது பெரும் படை அதிகனை வெகு எளிதாக.

கொண்டு வந்தனர் வெற்றி பெற்ற படை வீரர்கள்
பொன், பொருள், பெண்கள், மாண்டவரின் தலைகள்.

கண்டான் மன்னன் ஒரு தலையைச் சடைமுடியுடன்!
கொண்டான் கழிவிரக்கம் இழைத்த தன் பிழைக்காக!

அளித்து விட்டான் அரசுக் கட்டிலை அருமை மகனுக்கு!
அளித்து விட்டான் சோழன் தன்னுயிரை அழற்குழிக்கு!

வலம் வந்தான் அடியவர் சிரத்தைத் தட்டில் ஏந்தியபடி;
நலம் பெற்றான் தீக் குழியில் அச்சமின்றிப் புகுந்து.

அரிய தன் இன்னுயிரையே ஈந்தான் பதிலுக்கு
அறியாமல் தன் படை வீரர்கள் செய்த தெற்றுக்கு.

"பொழிற்க் கருவூர்த் துஞ்சிய புகழ்ச் சோழர்க்கு அடியேன்"

#41. Thiru Pugazh ChOzha nAyanAr

Thiru Pugazh ChOzha nAyanAr was ruling over the ChOzha kingdom with Uraiyoor as his capital city. Saivism flourished in his reign. All the poojas were performed and the festivals were celebrated without any lapse in all the temples.

Later the Capital was shifted from Uraiyoor to Karuvoor. All the Chieftains under the power of Pugazh ChOzhan paid their tributes regularly except one name Adhigan.

A huge Chozha army went to deal with the audacity of Adhigan. The army vanquished Adhikan and brought back gold, precious articles, women and the severed heads of the enemy soldiers.

Pugazg ChOzhan saw that one of the severed heads sported a jada mudi that belonged to a devotee of Siva. He felt very sad for having caused the death of a devotee of Siva, in this cruel manner.

Even though it was the mistake committed by his army soldiers, he took the blame on himself and wanted to do prAyachitham.

He crowned his son as the new king. He placed the severed head of the devotee of Siva on a gold plate. He went round the burning pit of fire and entered in it without any hesitation.

By sheer coincidence today's post is a story in which the righteous king takes upon himself the blame for a sin committed by one of his soldier and sets it right by sacrificing his own life in a pit of roaring fire.

This proves that a king gets not only the fame but also

the blame for the actions committed by his citizens.

10#12d. சரஸ்வதி தேவி (2)

சுக்ரீவன் சென்றான் தேவியிடம் தூதுவனாக;
சுக்ரீவன் சொன்னான் சும்பன் தூது மொழியை.

எடுத்துரைத்தான் சும்பனின் மேன்மைகளை;
எடுத்துரைத்தான் சும்பனையே மணக்குமாறு.

கூறினாள் தேவி தூதனிடம் தன் பிரதிக்ஞையை,
“கூறுவாய் சும்பனிடம் என்னுடன் போர் புரிந்திட.

வெல்ல வேண்டும் என் கரத்தைத் திருமணத்தில் எனில்,
வெல்ல வேண்டும் என்னைப் போர்க்களத்தில் முதலில்!”

சினந்தான் சும்பன் பிரதிக்ஞையைக் கேட்டதும் – தன்
இனத்தின் வீரன் தும்பரனை அனுப்பினான் தேவியிடம்.

“இழுத்துக் கொண்டு வருவாய் சென்று – என்னிடம் அந்த
அழகிய அஹங்காரியின் கூந்தலைப் பற்றிக் கொண்டு!”

சென்றான் தும்பரன் அசுர சேனைகளுடன் போர்க்களம்;
சொன்னான் “பற்றி இழுத்துச் செல்வேன் உன் கூந்தலை!”

ஆங்காரத்துடன் தேவி இட்டாள் உரத்த குரலில்
ஹூங்காரம் போர்க்களத்தில் தும்பரனை நோக்கி!

மாண்டான் தும்பரன் அந்தக் கணமே அங்கேயே!
மாய்த்தது சிங்கம் அசுர சேனைகளைப் பாய்ந்து!

வந்தனர் சண்ட முண்டர் ரக்த பீஜன் அடுத்தடுத்து;
மாய்ந்தனர் சரஸ்வதி தேவியின் கரங்களில் அடுத்தடுத்து.

வந்தனர் சும்ப நிசும்பர்கள் களம் அடுத்ததாக;
மாய்ந்தனர் தேவியின் கரங்களில் அடுத்ததாக.

மஹாஸரஸ்வதியாகத் தோன்றினாள் – அந்த
மஹாதேவியே சும்ப நிசும்பரை அழிப்பதற்கு.

10#12d. MahA Saraswati (2)

Sugreevan was sent as a messenger to Devi, by Shumbhan. He conveyed the message sent by Shumbhan. He praised the greatness of ShumbhAsuran and advised Devi to marry him.

Devi replied to him, “I have taken an oath long ago that I shall marry only him who can defeat me in a war. Tell your king ShumbAsuran to win over me in the war field, if he wants to win my love and my hand in marriage.”

Shumbhan became very angry to hear such words from a woman. He sent Dhumran with this instruction,” Bring that arrogant woman to me, dragging her by the hair on her head!”

Dhumran went away with a huge asura army. He told Devi, “You will be dragged by me by the hair on your head to Shumbha!” Devi got very angry and made such a loud ‘hoonkAram’ that Dhumran got killed by the noise instantaneously. The lion managed to kill the asura army that had accompanied Dhumbran.

ChaNda, MuNda and Raktha Beeja came to the war front next. They too got killed by Devi. Finally Shumbhan and Nishumban came to the war front. They too got killed by Devi.

MahA Shakti appeared as MahA Saraswati on the slopes of HimAlayAs in order to destroy the wicked asuras Shumbhan and Nishumbhan.

#42. நரசிங்க முனையரையர் நாயனார்

ஆண்டு வந்தார் திருமுனைப்பாடி நாட்டினை
மாண்புடன் அடியார் நரசிங்க முனையரையர்.

வழங்கினார் பொன்னை, பொருளை, பட்டாடைகளை
வழக்கம் போல் ஒரு திருவாதிரைத் திருநாள் அன்று.

வந்தவர்களுள் இருந்தார் ஒரு சிவனடியார் - அவர்
வந்தவர்களை ஆழ்த்தினார் அருவருப்புக் கடலில்.

காமநோயால் சீர் கெட்டு இருந்தது அவர் உடல்;
காண்பவர்கள் சென்றனர் அச்சத்துடனே விலகி!

அருவருக்கவில்லை நரசிங்க முனையரையர்;
அருகில் சென்று வணங்கி ஆரத் தழுவினார்;

அளித்தார் அந்த அடியாருக்கு இரு மடங்கு பொன்
அளித்தார் அந்த அடியாருக்குப் பிரியா விடையும்.

பெற்றார் அமரவாழ்வு; பெற்றார் அரன் சேவடி நீழல்
பெற்றார் அழியாத புகழை அடியவர்களை போற்றி

"மெய்யடியான் நரசிங்க முனையரையர்க்கு அடியேன்"

#42. Narasinga Munaiyaraiyar nAyanAr

Narasinga Munaiyaraiyar nAyanAr was ruling over Thiru Munaip pAdi. He was a very generous man and gifted away gold, precious articles and silks on every ThiruvAdhirai Day to the poor and needy.

During one such day, a devotee of Lord Siva was seen in the crowd, He was suffering from sexually transmitted diseases. His sight was enough to scare away everyone in the crowd.

But Narasinga Munaiyaraiyar did not flinch at his sight. Instead he went nearer to that devotee, paid his obeisance and embraced him. He presented him with double the quantity of gifts he gave to the other people gathered there.

10#12e. ஸாவர்ணி மனு

கூறினார் முனிவர் மன்னனிடம் இந்த விவரங்களை;
கூறினார் முனிவர் மன்னனிடம் தேவியை வணங்க.

“ஆக்கல், காத்தல், அழித்தல் மூன்றும் செய்கிறாள்
அகிலத்தின் அன்னையான மஹேஸ்வரி தேவியே!

தருவாள் நாம் விரும்பும் வரங்களை – உன் நோக்கம்
நிறைவேறும் அவளிடம் நீ சரண் புகுந்தால்!” என்றார்.

தேவியின் உருவம் சமைத்தான் மண்ணினால்;
தேவியைத் தியானித்துப் பூஜித்தான் மன்னன்.

பலி கொடுத்தான் தன் உதிரத்தையே சுரதன்;
பலித்தது அவன் தவம்! காட்சி தந்தாள் தேவி!

“அகல வேண்டும் என் அறியாமை முற்றிலும்!
பெருக வேண்டும் என்னுள்ளே அறிவு, ஞானம்!

பெற வேண்டும் நான் அரச வாழ்வை மீண்டும்!
பெற வேண்டும் பகைவர் பயமற்ற ஆட்சியை!”

“விரும்பியவை எல்லாம் பெறுவாய் இப்பிறவியில்;
விளங்குவாய் ஸாவர்ணி மனுவாக மறுபிறவியில்.

மன்வந்தரத்தின் தலைவனாகத் திகழ்வாய் – மேலும்
மனம் மகிழ்வாய் நல்ல சந்ததியினரைப் பெற்றதால்.”

10#12e. SAvarNi Manu

Sage SumedhA told Kind Surata all these and advised him to worship Devi in order to get his heart’s desires fulfilled.

“The three tasks namely Creation, Protection and Destruction are all done by Devi Maheswari. She is the mother of the Universe. She fulfills the desires of her devotees. Surrender to her and worship her to get your boons from her.”

King Surata made an image of Devi with clay. He worshipped her with intense devotion. He offered his own blood in the sacrifice. Devi was very pleased and appeared before him.

King told Devi,” Oh Mother! Please remove my utter ignorance. Please bless me with pure intellect and wisdom. I want to rule my kingdom again but without the fear of enemies.”

Devi blessed him and said, “You will get whatever you wish for in this birth. You will become SAvarNiManu in your next birth. You will be the ruler during one
Manvantara. You will get worthy sons and grandsons. You will enjoy the pleasures of a kingly life for a long time!”

#43. திரு அதிபத்தர் நாயனார்

நுளைப்பாடி இருந்தது நாகப்பட்டினக் கடற்கரையில்;
வலைஞர்கள் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர் இங்கே வளத்துடன்.

அவதரித்தார் அதிபத்தர் வலைஞர் நுளையர் குடியில்;
அவர் பெற்றிருந்தார் கணக்கற்ற பல நாவாய்க்களை.

வாணிபத்தில் விளங்கினார் செல்வத்தின் செழிப்போடும்;
வேணிப் பிரான் சேவடிகளுக்கு மிகுந்த அன்பு கொண்டும்;

ஆழ்கடலுள் சென்று மீன் பிடிப்பார் அதிபத்தர் - ஆனால்
ஆழ்ந்த அருளுடன் விட்டுவிடுவார் முதலில் பிடித்த மீனை.

திருவுள்ளம் கொண்டர் பிரான் அவரைச் சோதிப்பதற்கு;
தினமும் கிடைக்கச் செய்தார் ஒரே ஒரு மீனை மட்டும்.

"முதலில் பிடித்த மீன் மூவருள் முதல்வனுக்கு!" என்று
முதல் மீனை விட்டுவிட்டு வெறுமனே வீடு திரும்புவார்.

வாணிகம் தளர்ந்தது; வறுமை வளர்ந்தது - எனினும்
பேணி வந்தார் நாள் தவறாமல் தான் ஏற்ற விரதத்தை.

ஒரு நாள் கண்டார் நாயனார் தான் வீசிய வலையில்
பெரு வியப்பளித்து ஒளிர்கின்ற அற்புத தங்க மீனை!

வீசியது அந்த விந்தை மீன் கதிரவன் போலவே ஒளியை!
மாசில்லாத பொற்செதில்களில் மிளிர்ந்தன நவமணிகள்!

"இந்த மீனை விற்றால் நீங்கிவிடும் உன் வறுமை" என்றனர் ;
அந்த எண்ணத்தைத் தவிர்த்தார்; அதற்கு உடன்பட மறுத்தார்;

"முதல்வனுக்கே அளிக்க முடிந்தததே இந்த அரிய பொன்மீனை!"
இதில் அடைந்தார் எல்லையற்ற ஆனந்தமும் திருப்தியும் அவர் !

எறிந்துவிட்டார் அந்தப் பொன்மீனை மீண்டும் ஓடும் நீரிலேயே
செறிந்த அவர் பக்தியைக் கண்டு வியந்து நின்றனர் மக்கள்.

பிறந்தது வான வீதியில் ஒரு பேரொளி அப்போது!
சிறந்த பக்திக்குப் பரிசு இறைவனின் திருக்காட்சி!

அளித்தார் திருக்காட்சி அண்ணல் உமை அன்னையுடன்!
அளித்தார் திருவடி நீழலை அன்பர் அதிபத்த நாயனாருக்கு!

"கடல் நாகை அதிபத்தர்க்கு அடியேன்"

#43. Athi Baththar nAyanAr

Athi Baththar nAyanAr was born in the family of fishermen living in NuLaippAdi, near the seashore at NAgappattaNam. He owned many boats and was very successful in his business. He was rich, generous and very much devoted to Lord Siva.

He used to catch fish by going very far into the deep sea. He held on one vratham close to his heat. He would always throw the first fish caught by him back into the water. It was the daily offering he made to Lord Siva.

Lord Siva wanted to test his commitment and sincerity. So Siva made sure that Athi baththar could just catch one single fish from the water everyday. Athi baththar would honor his own commitment, throw back the fish into water and go home empty handed. His business failed and he became a poor man but he held on to his commitment made to Lord Siva.

One day he caught the rarest and most beautiful fish in his net. It was shining as if made of the purest solid gold. The nine precious gems appeared to be studded on its scales and they formed a lovely sight.

The people with Athibaththar told him,"This fish is very rare. If you sell it you may become a rich man once again as before"

But Athibaththar would not listen to that suggestion. He would never break his vratam and forget his commitment to Siva. He threw back the fish in the water. He was overjoyed that he could offer the rare fish to Siva Himself rather than to anyone else.

A illumination appeared on the sky. Lord Siva appeared with Devi Uma in it. Siva gave his divine sight to the nAyanar. Siva gave a spot for his devotee in His world.

God does not expect man to bend the sky into a bow or to twist a rope out of the sand in a beach or string the stars into a spectacular necklace.

Sincerity of the mind / strict adherence to the chosen austerity (Vratham) is all He expects from man in return for His infinite mercy.

10#13a. மனுக்கள்

ஆறு புதல்வர் இருந்தனர் வைவஸ்வத மனுவுக்கு;
ஆகாரம் நித்திரை விடுத்துச் செய்தனர் கடும்தவம்.

ஆய தவம் செய்தனர் பன்னிரண்டு ஆண்டுகள்;
தூய அறிவு பெற்றனர்; ஞானம் விளைந்தது!

காட்சி தந்தாள் தேவி மலர்ந்த முகத்துடன்;
மாட்சிமை வாய்ந்த பகையற்ற அரசாட்சி,

நீண்டகாலம் வாழும் நல்ல சந்ததியினர்;
நிறைந்த அரசபோகம், புகழ், பக்தி தந்தாள்.

பூவுலக அதிபதிகளாக இருந்தனர் இவர்கள்;
ஸாவர்ணி மனுக்களாயினர் மறு பிறவியில்.

ஒன்பதாம் மனு ஆனான் தாக்ஷ ஸாவர்ணி
பத்தாவது மனு ஆனான் மேரு ஸாவர்ணி

பதினோராவது மனு ஆனான் சூரிய ஸாவர்ணி
பன்னிரெண்டாம் மனு ஆனான் சந்திர ஸாவர்ணி.

பதிமூன்றாவது மனு ஆனான் ருத்ர ஸாவர்ணி;
பதினான்காம் மனு ஆனான் விஷ்ணு ஸாவர்ணி.

10#13a. The SAvarNi Manus

Vaiwasvatha Manu has six brilliant and valiant sons. They did severe penance towards Devi – sacrificing their food and sleep.

They observed the harsh austerities for twelve long years. Their ignorance was removed and they obtained pure knowledge and wisdom.

Devi who was pleased with their penance, appeared before them and gave them these boons. Rulership without the fear of enemies, powerful sons and grandsons who had a long life span, kingly pleasures, fame and undiminished devotion.

They became the unchallenged rulers of the earth. They became the SAvarNi Manus in their next birth.

By Devi’s grace, the first prince became the Ninth Manu named Daksha SAvarNi and the second prince became the Tenth Manu named Meru SAvarNi.

The third prince became the Eleventh Manu named Soorya SAvarNi and the fourth prince became the Twelfth Manu named Chandra SAvarNi.

The fifth prince became the Thirteenth Manu named Rudra SAvarNi and the sixth prince became the Fourteenth Manu named VishNu SAvarNi.

#44. திரு கலிக்கம்பர் நாயனார்

தோன்றினார் கலிக்கம்பர் நாயனார் வளமை மிகுந்த
பெண்ணாடகத்தில் வளம் பெற்ற வணிகர் குலத்தில்.

பற்றற்று விளங்கினார் உலகப் பொருட்களின் மீது;
பற்றுக் கொண்டு விளங்கினார் தொண்டு புரிவதில்.

பாதபூசை செய்வார் சிவனடியார்களுக்கு - அளிப்பார்
போதும் என்னும்படிப் பொன், பொருள், உணவுகளை.

வந்தார் சிவனடியார் ஒருவர் அவரிடம் ஒருநாள்;
வந்த அடியாருக்குச் செய்தார் பாதபூசை நாயனார்.

அன்று நீர் வார்க்க வந்த மனைவி தயங்கி நின்றாள்;
இன்றைய சிவனடியார் முந்தைய வீட்டு வேலையாள்!

அறிந்துகொண்டார் கலிக்கம்பர் அவள் எண்ணத்தை;
விரைந்து சென்றார் சினத்துடன்; வாள் ஏந்தி வந்தார்.

பற்றி இழுத்தார் தயங்கி நின்ற மனைவியின் கரத்தை;
வெட்டி எறிந்தார் அவள் கரத்தைச் சற்றும் தயங்காமல்!

பெருகியது செந்நீர் ஆறு போல் உதிரம் கரத்திலிருந்து;
மறுகினார் உள்ளம் இக்கொடுமை கண்ட சிவனடியார்!

வருந்தினாள்; மயங்கி விழுந்தாள் நாயனாரின் மனைவி!
அரும் பெரும் காட்சி ஒன்று தோன்றியது அந்த இடத்தில்

விடை மீது காட்சி தந்தனர் அண்ணலும், அம்மையும் அங்கே!
தடையின்றி வளர்ந்தது வெட்டுண்ட கரம் முன்போல் மீண்டும்!

பணிந்தனர் பக்தியுடன் முக்கண்ணனை, அன்னையை மூவரும்
பணியணிப் பிரான் பின் மறைந்து அருளினார் தேவி உமையுடன்.

இனிதே வாழ்ந்தனர் சதிபதிகள் அன்புடன் முன்போலவே;
பணிவுடன் தொடர்ந்தனர் அடியார்த் திருத்தொண்டுகளை.

அடைந்தனர் அரன் திருவடிகளை இருவரும் வாழ்ந்த பின்னர்;
அடைந்தனர் துன்பமே இல்லாத பேரின்பப் பெருவாழ்வினை.

"கை தடிந்த வரிசிலையான் கலிக்கம்பர்க்கு அடியேன் "

#44. Kalikkambar nAyanAr

Kalik kambar nAyanAr was born in a fertile place called PeNNAdagam in the family of rich merchants. He was not attached to the worldly possessions. But he was very deeply attached to serving Lord Siva and his devotees - to the best of his ability.

He would welcome the devotees of Siva, do pAdha poojai by washing their feet and present them with enough of food, clothes and gold.

One day a devotee of Siva came to him. NAyanAr wanted to do paadha poojai for him assisted by his wife - who usually pours the water on the feet of the devotee to be washed.

On that day his wife hesitated to pour the water on the feet of the devotee since he used to be employed as their servant in the past.

Kalikkambar could read her thoughts very well. He became very angry. He brought a sharp weapon and cut off her hand without any hesitation. Blood flowed freely from the severed hand and she fainted with fear and pain. The devotee of Siva was shocked as well as sad at this sudden development.

A strange scene unfolded there at that time. Lord Siva appeared on his bull Nandhi DhEvan. The severed arm of the nAyanAr's wife grew back and became normal. The three people feel down and paid their obeisance to Lord Siva who then disappeared from there.

Kalikkambar and wife continued to serve the devotees of Siva without any hesitation or lapse. When their time came they reached the lotus feet of Siva and escaped the endless cycles of birth and death on the earth.

10#13b. பிரமரி தேவி (1)

வலிமை கொண்டவன் அசுர மன்னன் அருணன்;
வெறுத்தான் தேவர்களை அசுர மன்னன் அருணன்;

வெளியேறினான் தன் பாதாள உலகத்தை விட்டு;
குடியேறினான் கங்கைக் கரைப் பர்ணசாலையில்.

தவம் செய்தான் காயத்ரீ மந்திரத்தை ஜபித்து;
தவம் செய்தான் 10,000 ஆண்டுகள் நீர் அருந்தி;

தவம் செய்தான் 10,000 ஆண்டுகள் காற்றைச் சுவாசித்து;
தவம் செய்தான் 10,000 ஆண்டுகள் எதுவும் உண்ணாமல்!

எழுந்தது தவ அக்னி அவன் உடலில் இருந்து;
கொழுந்து விட்டு எரிந்தது உலகங்கள் எங்கும்.

அஞ்சிய தேவர்கள் தஞ்சம் புகுந்தனர் பிரமனிடம்;
அன்ன வாஹனத்தில் சென்றான் காயத்ரீ தேவியுடன்.

உயிர் மட்டுமே ஊசலாடியது அருணன் உடலில்;
வயிறு ஒட்டி, அவன் உடல் முழுவதும் ஓட்டைகள்!

பிரகாசித்தான் அருணன் இரண்டாவது அக்னியாக;
பிரார்த்தித்தான் அருணன் மரணம் இல்லா வாழ்வு!

“பிறப்பு என்ற ஒன்று ஜீவர்களுக்கு இருந்தால்
இருந்தே ஆகவேண்டும் இறப்பு என்ற ஒன்றும்!

கால வயப்பட்டவர்களே தேவர்கள், தெய்வங்கள்!
கேள் வேறு ஏதாவது வரம்!” என்றான் பிரமதேவன்.

“வரக் கூடாது மரணம் அஸ்திர சஸ்திரங்களால்;
வரக் கூடாது மரணம் ஆண்களால், பெண்களால்!

வரக் கூடாது இரண்டு, நாலு கால் பிராணிகளால்;
வரலாம் மரணம் வேறு எதாவது ஒரு விதத்தில்!”

அளவற்ற வலிமை பெற்றான் பிரம தேவனிடம்;
ஆள விரும்பினான் மூவுலகங்களையும் வென்று.

திரும்பினான் வரம் தந்த பிரமன் காயத்ரியுடன்;
திரட்டினான் அருணன் அசுர வீரர்களை ஒன்றாக.

உலகம் உய்ய வேண்டும்! விசாலம். K. ராமன்

10#13b. BhrAmari Devi (1)

AruNan was a very powerful Asuran. His hatred for the Devas was intense. He came out of the PAtALA and reached the banks of Ganges. He constructed a small hut there. He lived there doing GAyathree japam with severe intensity and austerity.

He did penance living only on water for the first ten thousand years. He did penance living only on air for the next ten thousand years. For the next ten thousand years he lived on nothing practically – taking neither water nor air.

The heat of his intense penance spread in all the three worlds. The Devas could not bear the intensity of his penance. They took refuge in Brahma. He went to AruNan on his Hamsa VAhana along with Devi GAyatree.

AruNan was just barely alive. He was emancipated and was a mere bag of bones. But he shone as brilliantly as Agni Devan. Brahma blessed him back to good health and strength. AruNan wished for immortality.

Brahma replied to AruNan, “Even Gods and Devas are not free from this limitation of Time called Death! I cannot grant you a boon of immortality since that is an impossibility. Ask for something which is possible and acceptable.”

AruNan said, “O Lord! Grant me such a boon that my death shall not be caused by any war, nor by any arms nor by any weapons, nor by any man nor by any woman, nor by any biped or quadruped nor by any combination of the two. Grant me such a boon and also a large army so that I can conquer the Devas.”

Brahma gave him all these boons and went back to His own abode with GAyathree Devi.

#45. திரு கலிய நாயனார்

அவதரித்தார் கலிய நாயனார் திருவொற்றியூரில்;
அவதரித்தார் எண்ணெய் வாணிபர்கள் குலத்தில்.

படம்பக்க நாதரின் ஆலயத்தில் உள்ளும் புறமும்
தடையின்றி ஏற்றினார் தீபங்களை அல்லும் பகலும்.

அன்பரைச் சோதிப்பதில் அண்ணலுக்கு விருப்பம்!
அன்பருக்குத் தோற்றுவித்தார் அண்ணல் வறுமையை.

வறுமையைப் பெருமையாகக் கருதினார் கலியானார்;
திருப்பணியையைத் தொடரச் செய்தார் கூலிவேலை.

எண்ணையை வாங்கி விற்றுப் பொருள் ஈட்டினார்;
எண்ணையைச் செக்கில் ஆட்டிப் பொருள் ஈட்டினார்.

தொடர்ந்தது திருப்பணி தடையின்றி முன்போலவே!
தொடர்ந்தது வறுமை வேலை எதுவும் இல்லாதபோது!

விற்றார் வீட்டில் இருந்த பொருட்களையெல்லாம்;
விற்றார் மனையை, அதன் பின்னர் மனைவியை!

வாங்குவதற்கு முன்வரவில்லை எவரும் மனைவியை!
வந்து அடைந்தார் படம்பக்க நாதரையே மனைவியடன்!

"திருவிளக்குத் திருப்பணி நின்றால் நான் மாள்வேன்!
திருவிளக்குத் திருப்பணி தொடரும் என் குருதியால் !"

அரிந்துகொள்ள முயன்றார் வாளால் தன் சிரத்தையே!
அரன் தடுத்தான் அடியவர் கரத்தைப் பற்றி அப்போதே!

தோன்றியது பேரொளி அந்த ஆலயத்தில்!
தோன்றியது பேரொளி விளக்குகளிலும்!

உதிரம் வழிந்த கழுத்து உறுதி பெற்றது மீண்டும்.
எதிரே தோன்றினர் அண்ணலும், தேவி உமையும்.

பணிந்தனர் சதி பதிகள் பலமுறை இறைவனை;
பணியணி வேணிப்பிரான் தந்தான் தன் சிவபதம்.

பெற்றனர் இருவரும் பேரின்ப வாழ்வினை;
பெற்றனர் இருவரும் சிவலோகப் பதவியினை;

"கலியனுக்கும் அடியேன்"

#45. Kaliya nAyanAr

Kaliya nAyanAr was born in ThiruvOtriyoor in the family of oil merchants. He was committed to lighting the lamps inside and outside the temple of Padampakka nAthar - the residing deity of that place.

Lord Siva's favorite pastime is testing the sincerity of his sincere devotees. So He made KaliyanAr very poor. But Kaliya nAyanAr considered the honest poverty as an honor.

He continue his service with the money he earned by doing menial labor and by buying and selling the oil. Later he squeezed the oil in a mill and sold it to make a profit so to continue his service in the temple.

But when he could not any work, containing his humble service became very difficult He sold everything in his house and finally even his house. He tried to sell his wife also but no one came forward to buy his wife.

KaliyanAr went to the Padampakka nAthar temple with his wife and told Lord Siva. "If I am unable to continue my humble service, I will kill myself. I will burn the lamps with my own blood."

He tried to severe his head but Lord Siva would not let it happen. He stopped KaliyanAr by catching hold of his hand.

A brilliant light appeared in the temple. Al the lamps got lit and burned bright. KaliyanAr's severed neck became strong and normal as before.

Lord Siva appeared there with Devi Uma. KaliyanAr and his wife both fell on the ground and paid obeisance to Siva and Uma several times. Lord Siva bestowed on them the Siva padham and freedom for the shackles of SamsAra.

KaliyanAr and his wife lived for long and continued their service in the temple as long as they lived.

அறைகூவினான் அருணன் இந்திரனைப் போருக்கு;
முறையிட்டான் இந்திரன் பிரம்மதேவனிடம் சென்று.

சென்றனர் தேவர்கள் பிரம்மனுடன் விஷ்ணுவிடம்;
சென்றனர் தேவர்கள் விஷ்ணுவுடன் சிவபிரானிடம்.

“ஓட்டி விட்டான் அருணன் அஷ்ட திக்பாலகர்களை!
ஆட்டுவித்தான் அஹங்காரத்தோடு மூன்று உலகையும்!

எடுத்துக் கொண்டான் திக்பாலகர்களின் உருவை!
எடுத்துக் கொண்டான் திக்பாலகர்களின் தொழிலை!”

அரற்றினார் தேவர்கள் துயரங்களைச் சிவனிடம்,
“வரம் தந்துள்ளான் பிரம்மதேவன் விசேஷமாக!”

ஒலித்தது வானொலி அச்சமயத்தில் உரக்க;
“கலக்கம் வேண்டாம் தேவர்களே உங்களுக்கு!

சரணடையுங்கள் பராசக்தியிடம் அனைவரும்;
நிறைவேற்றுவாள் உங்கள் கோரிக்கைகளை.

பெறுகிறான் வலிமை அருணன் காயத்ரீ மந்திரத்தால்!
பெறுவான் அழிவை அருணன் ஜபம் செய்ய மறந்தால்!”

தந்திர இந்திரன் அனுப்பினான் தன் குலகுருவை,
“மந்திரத்தை மறக்கச் செய்யுங்கள் எவ்வாறேனும்!

உதவுவாள் தேவியும் உமது முயற்சிகளில்!
உதவுவோம் தேவர்களும் தியானம் செய்து!”

பூஜித்தனர் தேவர்கள் ஒன்றாக – ஜாம்
பூந்தேஸ்வரியை மாயா பீஜ மந்திரத்தால்.

10#13c. BhrAmari Devi (2)

Arunan challenged Indra for a war. Indra sought the help of Brahma; who in turn sought the help of Vishnu; who in turn sought the help of Siva.

“Arunan has driven away the Ashta Dik PAlakAs. He has assumed their forms and also their roles. He is terrorising all the three worlds. Brahma has given him special boons making him almost immortal”

An AakAshvANi was heard at that time from the sky. “Do not worry Oh Devas! Take refuge in the Mother of the Universe. She will remove your sorrows and solve your problems. Arunan gets his power from his GAyatree japam. If he stops doing the japam, he will become vulnerable and weak.”

Indra conceived a plan and sent Bruhaspati to Arunan with this instruction. “Make AruNan forget to do GAyatree japam by hook or crook. Devi will assist you in your attempt. We Devas will also pray to Devi and worship her – seeking her help.”

Bruhaspati went to meet AruNan. The DevAs started worshipping JAmboontheswari Devi chanting the MAyA Beeja Mantra.

#46. திரு சத்தி நாயனார்

வரிஞ்சையூர் பதியில் வேளாளர்களின் குலத்தில்
வாழ்ந்து வந்தார் சிவத்தொண்டர் சத்தி நாயனார்.

தாங்கினார் சடை முடி விடைப் பிரானை நெஞ்சத்தில்
தாங்கினார் சிவன் அடியார்களைத் தொண்டுகளில்.

பொறுக்க மாட்டார் சிவ நிந்தனை செய்வபவர்களை!
ஒறுத்து விடுவார் நாவைக் குறட்டால் பிடித்து அரிந்து!

பெற்றிருந்தார் வலிமை உடலிலும், உள்ளத்திலும்;
பெற்றிருந்தார் சத்தி என்னும் திருநாமம் இதனால்!

அர்ப்பணித்தார் தன் வாழ்வைச் சிவத் தொண்டுகளுக்கு;
அடைந்தார் ஆனந்த நடனம் செய்யும் அரன் திருவடிகளை.

"கழற்சத்தி வரிஞ்சையர்கோன் அடியேன்"

#46. Shakthi nAyanAr

Shakthi nAyanAr belonged to the family of farmers and lived in Varinjaiyoor. He was a staunch devotee of lord Siva. He was steeped in his devotion to Lord Siva and also in serving the devotees of Lord Siva.

He would not pardon anyone indulging in insulting Siva or His devotees. He would punishing the wrong doer by cutting off his tongue - holding it tight with pincers!

He was strong in his body. mind and his devotion. So his name became Shakthi nAyanAr. He served his Lord and devotees of his Lord as long as he lived.

For long I have toiled as a scribe -- night and day -- for ten thousand days -- in praise of the trinity of gods representing all creation, preservation and destruction of life on earth and elsewhere in the universe -- portraying as carefully as possible the lives of their devotees among the human beings and other forms of manifestation believed in, such as, the devas, asuras and the like, who have done penance for ages and ages, often without food and water -- all in order to attain boons from the trinity, which they used and were rewarded or misused and were punished -- and now my life is drawing to a close -- I am old and weary, but I am yet to meet a being of the type I have described at great length day in and day out of my life and I am yet to get a darshan of the Lord! If death were to come before any such experience, will my soul, the spirit within me, go to heaven after my death? Or will my soul take a re-birth for yet another chance to get another ten thousand days to finish the task undertaken by me, which somehow still remains unfinished? How can that be done, if, as they say, my soul were to become 'one with Brahman' -- like a droplet in an ocean or a spark in a fire? Who will carry on my legacy?

சென்றார் பிருஹஸ்பதி அசுரன் அருணனிடம்,
சொன்னான் அருணன், “அதிசயம் தங்கள் வரவு!

பிரியம் வைத்துள்ளீர் இந்திரன் மீது – அவனைப்
பிரிந்து என்னிடம் வந்த காரணம் எதுவோ?” எனப்

“பிரியம் வைத்துள்ளேன் நான் காயத்ரீ தேவியிடம்;
பிரியம் வைத்துள்ளாய் நீயும் காயத்ரீ தேவியிடம்.

பிரியம் வைத்தேன் நான் உன் மேல் அதனால்!”
பிரியத்துடன் மொழிந்தார் தேவகுரு பிருஹஸ்பதி.

இறுமாந்தான் அருணன் தன் சிறப்பை எண்ணி;
மறந்தான் பரம மந்திரத்தை ஜபம் செய்வதற்கு.

அகன்று சென்றது அருணின் ஜப தேஜஸ்- தேவகுரு
அகமகிழ்ந்து திரும்பினார் வந்த வேலை முடிந்ததும்.

பூஜித்தான் இந்திரன் மஹேஸ்வரியை பக்திடன்;
பூஜை பலித்தது; காட்சி தந்தாள் பிரமரி தேவி!

ஜகன்மாதா! லோகநாயகி! ஸர்வாத்மிகை;
ஸர்வ ஜனனி, ஸர்வேச்’வரி, தேஜோ ரூபிணி;

கோடி சூரியர்களின் பிரகாசத்துடனும் மற்றும்
கோடி மன்மதர்களின் சௌந்தர்யத்துடனும்;

நவ மணி மலைகள் அணிந்து சந்தனப் பூச்சுடன்;
நவ மலர் மாலைகள் அணிந்து புன்னகையுடன்;

அலையும் வண்டுகள் ஹ்ரீங்காரம் செய்திட-ஆடை
அலங்காரத்துடன் அபய, வரத, ஹஸ்தங்களுடன்;

கருணைக் கடலாகத் தோன்றினாள் பிரமரி தேவி!
அருள் புரிந்திட வந்தாள் அங்கு பிரமரி தேவி!

10#13d. BhrAmari Devi (3)

AruNan welcomed the Devaguru Bruhaspati with due honors. He could not help wondering what had brought the Devaguru away from Indra to AruNan the DaityA!

Bruhaspati told him,”You worship Devi GAyathree. I too worship Devi GAyathree. So I am your friend and not an enemy, as you may assume me to be!”

AruNan was very happy to hear these sweet words from Devaguru. He became very proud and conceited at his own greatness and forgot to do his GAyathree mantra japam.

AruNan lost his tejas and the protection given by GAyathree mantra – after he stopped chanting the mantra. He had become weak and vulnerable now. Bruhaspati was happy to have accomplished his mission and went back to the heaven.

Indra and the Devas worshiped Devi Maheswari with devotion. Devi was pleased and gave her darshan to the Devas.

The Mother of the World, the Ruler of the World, the Aatman in everyone, the Supreme Devi appeared with the brilliance of ten million Suns and the beauty of ten million Manmathans.

She wore many gem studded ornaments and garlands made of fresh fragrant flowers. She had sandal paste smeared on her body and a lovely smile in her face.Tens of Thousands of bees were swarming around her.

She came to answer the prayers of the Devas and to protect them. She was filled with sympathy and mercy and appeared to them as the BhrAmari Devi.

#47. ஐயடிகள் காடவர்கோன் நாயனார்

காஞ்சி மாநகரின் பல்லவப் பேரரசர்களில் ஒருவர்
பிஞ்சுமதிப் பிரான் அடிமை ஐயடிகள் காடவர்கோன்;

வெண்கொற்றக் குடையின் கீழ் அமர்ந்து அரசாண்டார்;
வெண்மதியணி அண்ணலைத் தாங்கினார் நெஞ்சில்.

கல்வி கேள்விகளில் சிறந்து விளங்கினார் காடவர்கோன்;
சொல்வளம் செழிக்கும் வெண்பாக்கள் இயற்ற வல்லவர்.

வழிபட்டார் வண்ணத் தமிழ் வெண்பாக்களால் அரனை;
வழி செய்தார் இரு மொழிகளும், முத்தமிழும் வளர்ந்திட .

அரன் திருத் தலங்களை தரிசிக்கும் ஆவல் எழுந்தது;
அரச பாரத்தைத் துறந்திடும் தீவிர ஆவல் எழுந்தது!

ஆக்கினார் குமாரன் சிவ விஷ்ணுவை மன்னனாக ;
நீக்கினார் அரசகுலத் தொடர்புகளை இன்முகத்துடன்.

தொடர்ந்தார் சிவத் தலங்களுக்குச் செய்த யாத்திரையை;
துதித்தார் சிவனைத் தான் புனைந்த வெண்பாக்களால்.

கண்ணுதற் கடவுளின் திண்ணருள் பெற்றார் நாயனார்;
மண்ணுலகு நீக்கி விண்ணுலகில் பேரின்பம் அடைந்தார்.

#47. AiyadigaL KAdavarkOn nAyanAr


KAdavarkOn nAyanAr was one of the Pallava Kings who ruled over Pallava Kingdom with KAncheepuram as their capital city. He was a staunch devotee of Lord Siva - who was adorned by a lovely crescent moon.



KAdavarkON ruled over the Pallava kingdom and at the same time he was ruled over by the divine grace of Lord Siva. He was well versed in all the Arts and Sciences meant for the kings.


He could compose VeNbA in Thamizh rich in its words as well as its meaning. He encouraged the growth of both the Languages Tamil and Sanskrit. He encouraged the growth of all the three form of Tamil namely Iyal (Prose), Isai (Music) and NAtakam ( Drama).

A desire arose in him to visit all the holy places attributed to Lord Siva. He could do it in peace only when he freed himself from the commitments and duties of a king.


So he made his son Siva VishNu as the new king and severed his connection with his ruler ship happily. He visited all the holy places of Siva and sang the praise of his lord in chaste Thamizh.

He received the blessings of Siva and reached the world where there is neither birth nor death!

For long I have wondered why our gods did not reveal to us the truth that this earth is a big globe -- a planet -- floating in space -- rotating on its axis, albeit in a slightly tilted fashion and revolving around the sun -- a star -- alongwith its moon -- as other planets in the solar system do with their moons in tow!

For long I have wondered why our gods never revealed the origin of various life forms on earth -- in the sea, on land and the air, so to say -- and what they are all made up of -- and whether all forms of life have a soul, as we, human beings, believe ourselves to have, which undergoes transmigration through a cycle of births and deaths, or goes to a place called heaven or hell,according to our good or bad karma, to wait for the day of judgment!

For long I have wondered why our gods never revealed to us a great force called electricity and how it can be produced and distributed to light up the world and to produce heat and cold, when the environment is the opposite --cold or hot as the case may be!

For long I have wondered why our gods never revealed to us that an atom can be split and a tremendous energy produced therefrom which can be utilized for productive purposes for the welfare of mankind as well as for unbelievably destructive purposes according to our inclinations!

For long I have wondered why our gods did not reveal to us the scientific facts and confer upon us the innovative skills to come up with the various modern devices to improve communication among human beings and transportation in this world on an ever increasing and faster scale!

For long I have wondered why our gods revealed to us only the methods of worship and devotion to themselves at the sacrifice of life, limbs and property without revealing to us the benefits of being essentially good to others and doing everything possible to improve the lives and welfare of others by treating them as equals instead of considering them as belonging to a hierarchical order in terms of their karma and assigning them a duty in life without offering them any choice to differ and do something else than what they are expected to do!
