Deadly ripple of communal violence in Orissa

Siba Mohanty and S N Agragami
07 Sep 2008 01:36:00 AM IST

When masked assailants shot and killed 84-year-old Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati and four others inside his ashram at Jalespatta what followed was inevitable. The August 23 murders turned a smouldering bushfire into a raging inferno that spread out of control beyond Orissa’s viciously polarised Kandhamal district.

The wild rampage of the aftermath has claimed at least 15 lives. Scores of churches, prayer houses, places of worship and homes have been burnt down or ravaged, leaving thousands to seek refuge in forests or relief camps. Almost a fortnight has passed, but the fires of the worst ever communal flare-up in the state’s history refuse to die down.

Coming only eight months after the riots of December, the violence in Kandhamal shows how successful the saffron organisations have been in polarising sentiment among the local populace. The tensions are palpable, and the fabric of inter-communal co-existence is under severe strain. The riots have even drawn international attention, with the Italian Parliament convening a special discussion and summoning the Indian ambassador for clarifications.

The division between Christians and non-Christians is hardly new, but the level of intolerance has grown alarmingly in recent decades after the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad made inroads in their self-proclaimed mission to thwart alleged indiscriminate conversion by Christian missionaries But beneath the façade of religion and at the root of the conflict lies a struggle for power, control over land and resources along with cornering the benefits of reservations and government doles.

Genesis of the conflict

The problem is rooted in the socio-demographic history of the district. The starting point can be traced to the 1940s, when the erstwhile Boudh-Khondmal district came into being. On one side are the Kandha tribals, and on the other, the Christian dalit Panas. Divisions between the simple and affable Kandha (Scheduled Tribe) and the smart and shrewd Panas (Scheduled Caste), who now enjoy a position of economic superiority, have grown sharply over the decades.

Of Kandhamal district’s population of 6,48,201, the Scheduled Tribe (Kandha) number stands at 3,36,809 (52 per cent). The Scheduled Caste population is 1,09,506 (17 per cent). There are about 1.18 lakh Christians (18 per cent of the district’s total and 13 per cent of the Christian population of Orissa). Most importantly, 70 per cent or more of the Pana community are Christian converts.

Years ago, the Orissa District Gazetteer described the scenario as: “In Khondmals (Kandhamal), the Pana were the serfs of the Khonds (Kandhas). They worked on their farms and wove cloth for them in return for which they got a small area of land, grain for food and marriage expenses. The Panas also acted as intermediaries and thus began to exploit the tribals economically.”

Gradually, they took possession of large chunks of land belonging to the tribals. But the Constitutional provision that anyone belonging to the SC would lose his/her entitlement, including reservation benefits, if they converted to Christianity opened a can of worms because the same does not apply to the ST community. Further, tribal land cannot be transferred to a non-tribal. In both cases, the Panas were the losers. They could not claim ownership to the land nor enjoy the benefits of reservations. So the Panas started a movement demanding ST status.

The fight over Kui

Kui, the main dialect of the STs and also of the Pana community, is the bone of contention. When the President’s Amendment Order 2002 included Kui in Entry No 31 of the ST category, the Panas demanded their caste be listed as “Kui” not Pana, as they shared traditions with the Kandhas. But the government, for the simple reason that it had no historical or anthropological standing, refused. It led to a further polarisation of the two communities. Both Hindu activists and Christian missionaries began to push the issue to their advantage, paving the way for a riot that took place a day before Christmas last year.

conversion and the church

Christian missionary activity started as early as 1861 when two missionaries were sent from England and made base at Russelkonda, now Bhanjanagar in neighbouring Ganjam district. The foundation for the first church in Kandhamal district was laid in 1920. By 1940, missionary activity had spread to Baliguda sub-division, and by 1976 the hilly, inaccessible district had nearly 300 churches. Christianity and conversion spread rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s.

Deposing before a fact-finding team that visited Kandhamal after the December 2007 riots — its report is titled Justice On Trial — Archbishop Raphael Cheenath had stated that he had been working over 40 years in the area. He told the team that no one could prevent the spread of Christianity. The missionaries have opened schools, hostels and health institutions. In the mission-run educational institutions 77,000 children study and 2,800 reside in the hostels.

Entry of hindu organisations

The zealous evangelism of the missionaries and growing resentment among the tribals gave the saffron organisations, primarily the VHP, a foothold. The enactment of the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act in 1967 as well as the previous Orissa Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act 1960 provided the fillip to their anti-conversion activities.

The swami arrives

It was in the mid-1960s that Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati came down from the Himalayas to his home state to take part in the cow protection movement. He stayed to join the anti-conversion movement in Kandhamal. He established a gurukul and a college in Chakapada, a remote part of Kandhmal district. Jalespatta is another ashram of the Swami where a women’s hostel has been built. He also conducted massive re-conversion ceremonies for converted tribals. Lakshmananda became a target and there were at least five bids on his life, the last one successful.

One of the main reasons why both missionaries and Hindu nationalists found Kandhamal to be fertile ground was that successive governments completely abdicated all welfare responsibility for the area. Voluntary organisations were free to do as they pleased as the authorities made no effort to keep tabs on their activities.

The undivided Phulbani district has no railway service. The Khurda-Balangir line passing through the district is yet to take off, though it was proposed 10 years ago. About 80 per cent of the population depends on agriculture, which is heavily reliant on rainfall.

The development indices are abysmal. The Human Development Index for Orissa shows Kandhamal in the 29th place for gender development, in the 30th place for reproductive health and 23rd in education. Orissa has 30 districts. Per capita income for the district is Rs 4,743 a year, doctor availability is 23 and the number of hospital beds, 63 for a population of one lakh. While the tribal literacy rate is 27 per cent, SCs enjoy a higher status at 34.5 per cent.

Vote-bank politics

While the district is predominantly tribal, it is represented by SC representatives both in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Besides, SC representatives from this region in the state assembly have been indulging in appeasement politics. This cost Phulbani MLA and then steel and mines minister Padmanabh Behera, a non-Christian Pana, his ministerial berth for allegedly doling out fake SC certificates to converts.

In fact, patronage to the dalits in Kandhamal is not restricted to Behera. The seeds of discontent were sown as early as 1981 when the then Congress government recommended that the Union government list Kui-speaking Dalit Panas as tribals. The Rajya Sabha MP from Congress Dr RK Nayak has always found himself embroiled in controversies over the SC-ST conflict.

The Maoist hand

The killing of Swami Lakshmanananda was at first blamed on the Maoists — the seer had during the December unrest accused them of fomenting communal tension — but there is no record of their involvement in religious issues yet. They have not claimed responsibility, which they usually do after such operations. However, a section feels this could be the handiwork of Christian cadres in the ranks of the CPI (Maoist)’s local dalams, which is recruiting from the region. It will be long before this whodunit is solved. The judicial commission probing the December riots is yet to come up with its finding. And the one for the killing of Lakshmanananda has just been formed. But even the truth may not wash away the bitterness on the two sides.

Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati becomes a martyr for stopping conversion mission

Christian outrage in Orissa

By Debasis Tripathy in Bhubaneswar
The joyful Janmashtami celebrations in the ashram turned into a funeral cry. According to eye-witnesses, all the murderers had their faces covered with masks and were talking to each other in the local language. Eleven of them arrested by the police are all Christians. The Maoists have denied that they were involved in the gruesome killing.

The police did nothing on the FIR. The police knew it better that Swamiji was at gunpoint and his ashram is not very far from Brahmanigaon, Daring Badi—the centre of the missionary activities in Kandhamal district. It is pertinent to mention here that in Daring Badi Swamiji was attacked by the Christian goons in the last December.
Respected Hindu leader brutally murdered. Ashram attacked. Woman Sannyasin Maa Bhaktimayi with three others also killed. Locals stunned. Observe statewide bandh.

At last, Christian missionaries succeeded in their notorious plan by killing Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati in cold blood and removed the main obstacle in their path for spreading Christianity in Orissa. The news of Swamiji’s assassination has stunned the entire state and people spontaneously took to the streets protesting this gruesome violence committed by the Christian goons on the eve of holy Janmashtami celebrations. Swamiji, who spread awareness about the menace of proselytisation and created panic among the Christian missionaries through his number of socio-cultural, religious, and humanistic programmes, got a painful, gruesome and inhuman death as evangelical terrorists pumped five bullets into his body. The state government failed to protect the precious life of Swamiji, even after repeated attacks on him.

This shocking incident occurred in Swamiji’s ashram at Jaleshapatta in Kandhamal district of Orissa on the eve of Janmashtami. The ashram was glittering with light and was in a festive mood to celebrate Sri Krishna’s birthday. At about 8 pm Swami Laxmanananda was busy in performing rituals inside his hut, when a group of Christian goons suddenly entered into it with sophisticated arms and ammunition and fired on him from AK-47 and SLR rifles and killed him on the spot. They also killed four other persons including three sadhus, when they came to protect Swamiji from these murderers. Swamiji’s disciple Sadhvi Mata Bhaktimayee, Madhab Baba, Kishor Baba and a local villager were shot dead by the miscreants. The joyful Janmashtami celebrations in the ashram turned into a funeral cry. According to eyewitnesses, all the murderers had their faces covered with masks and were talking to each other in the local language. The inmates of the ashram knew nothing about the attack as it was made suddenly. Sabita Kanhar, a student of class IX who is staying in the kanyashram, said: “We were chanting hymns and reading the Srimadbhagvat. At around 8 pm, we heard the sound of explosions inside the ashram. We thought it would be the sound of mere fire crackers used by other inmates to celebrate the occasion. At that time Swamiji was in his room. He was preparing to come to the utsav mandap. But we heard the voices of other sannyasis. They were shouting. We peeped into the room of Swamiji and saw that he was lying dead on the floor with others. There was blood everywhere inside the room.” Similarly another eyewitness namely Sankar Baba said: “Swamiji was very affectionate towards all. When he was in his room, an unknown person came to meet him. Swamiji offered him sweets. I left the place and went towards puja mandap. The two home guard jawans deployed for security, had gone to take their dinner. In the mean time, the Christian attackers rushed into the ashram and killed Swamiji, Mataji and others. Adequate police protection was not there. The home guard jawans deployed here had no ammunition except some bamboo batons. The attackers killed all and escaped safely.”

Government failed to provide security
Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati was well known as a crusader against the missionary activities in Orissa for decades. Therefore, he was attacked by Christian goons 10 times in the past. Recently he was attacked and injured by missionaries on December 24, 2007 and one of his disciples was also injured by the Christian attackers on July 8, 2008. But the state government did precious little to save the life of this 84-year-old Swami. He was not provided with adequate security even after his repeated request to the government for the same. According to his followers like Shri Kabichandra Nath, Swamiji himself and his followers had lodged at least a dozen complaints regarding the lack of security of his ashram. Swamiji also at different times gave hints even in press conferences in the state capital regarding threats to his life and demanded a quick action against the Christian terrorists who were after his life. The state government did not take any prompt step to save Swamiji. All that government did, was providing the deployment of one police constable and two home guards having only lathis in their hands. In the previous 10 attacks, he escaped fortunately but this time his foes succeeded in killing him. On that fateful night, Swamiji had returned from Cuttack after attending a rally over the Amarnath issue and was preparing to perform his puja. Prior to four days of this incident, Swamiji had received a threatening letter by post in which he was informed that his ashram was going to be attacked and he would be kidnapped shortly. After receiving this letter, Swamiji’s disciple, the late Mata Bhaktimayee lodged an FIR in Tumudibandh Police Station regarding the same and requested for additional security. But the police did nothing on the FIR. Arms and ammunition were seized from that village. But the administration did not care for this and at last Swamiji became a victim of this gross negligence. In the present attack, about 20 sophisticated guns were used including AK-47. It is a big question mark as to how the police could not get the prior information regarding this? Why did they not entertain and acted upon the FIR lodged by Swamiji?

(contd.)

contd..

After the incident, the state government aired a statement that the Maoist ultras have killed Swami Laxmanananda. Shri G.C. Nanda, the DGP, repeatedly said that this gruesome murder might be committed by the red ultras. Hindu Jagaran Samukshya said in a statement: “There was a meeting at Raikia Community Centre on the August 9, 2008 attended by many Christian militants representing NGOs and persons like Nakul Nayak, the ex-Member of Parliament and Krishna Padseth, the ex-chairman of the block from Tumudibandh. The conspiracy to kill Swami Laxmanananda was hatched in the meeting and on August 13, a threatening letter was circulated to the district and state authorities along with copies to Swamiji. On August 22, Swamiji appealed to the

District Magistrate to enhance his personal security.” The similar allegation has been made by VHP. Its state working president Dr. Umesh Patri said: “There was a meeting at Kulmaha village near Tumudibandh on August 9, 2008. This was attended by John Dayal, spokesman of All India Christian Council, and Arch Bishop of Bhubaneswar Raphel Chinath. John Dayal was in the state for the last 15 days. Swami returned from Cuttack on August 22, 2008. In a well-planned way he was assassinated on August 23, 2008. Swamiji was like a God to the locals. The day when Sri Krishna was born Swamiji was assassinated. Is this a Janmashtami present by the Christians to the Hindu community? The Christian missionaries are mistaken that they have achieved their goal.”

The fact that the Christian missionaries killed Swamiji and his disciples again becomes clear from the prima facie investigation conducted by police. Now, the police finds ammunition from the alleged Christian goons. The police has arrested one Pradesh Kumar Das from Khadagpur, an employee of World Vision, a Christian Charity, while escaping from the district. In another drive, two other persons namely Vikram Diggal and William Diggal, have been arrested from the house of Lal Diggal, a local militant Christian at Gunjibadi, Nuagaan. They have reportedly confessed before the police that they attacked and killed Swamiji along with 28 other assailants, all are Christians.

It is a well-known fact that the Naxals generally attack such rich people who possess much money, property or ammunition. In order to snatch them away from them, Naxals make them target. But Swami Laxmanananda who dedicated his entire life for the poor, downtrodden, Harijans and Vanvasis did possess nothing so valuable, then why would the Naxals attack him? Naxals have no business with religious matters. All the previous 10 attacks were made by the Christians, not by Naxals. It will not be out of place to mention here that in 2006, in an interview with this correspondent Swamiji had narrated about some true incidents how Naxals used to come to his reformation programmes and attend his religious, cultural programmes. Swamiji had no rivalry with Naxals. Hence the government’s Naxal attack plea is not at all believable.

Grand funeral procession
The people of Kandhamal paid their heartiest tribute to Swami Laxmanananda in a spectacular manner as if he was their father and mother, very caring for their needs. The common people participated massively in the funeral procession. It was brought to the Chakapad ashram, where Swamiji had been doing his rashtra sadhna since last 40 years. His mortal body was cremated in the ashram premises following traditional rituals. His body was given sthala samadhi in his ashram garden, where Swamiji taught various methods of advanced organic agriculture to Vanvasis. VHP’s International General Secretary Dr. Praveen Togadia attended the funeral along with Parishad’s leader Dr. Ramvilas Vedanti, Shri Y. Raghaballu, Shri Balakrishna Naik. Sah Kshetriya Pracharak Shri Ajit Prashad Mohapatra, Prant Pracharak Shri Jagadish Khadanga, Shri Rajendra Madala of Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Shri Gouri Prasad Rath, Shri Tanmay Mohapatra, Shri Deepak Rout, Dr. Pramod Acharya, Dr. Basanta Rath, Shri Subas Chouhan of VHP, Minister Shri Golok Bihary Nayak, Smt. Surama Padhy and other karyakartas of Sangh parivar were present in the funeral ceremony.

Shankaracharya condemns
Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati has expressed his deep condolence and strong reaction against the gruesome murder of Swami Laxmanananda. In his message he said: “Laxmanananda was a great saint who worked for the protection of dharma and betterment of the poor people. He was a fearless saint who never compromised on truth and dharma. I am deeply pained over his unfortunate death. The state government failed to protect him from the attack of Christian missionaries. I believe that there is an international conspiracy behind this murder. It is a matter of great sorrow that the BJP people in the coalition government did nothing for Swamiji’s protection, though they were always blessed by him.”

Gajapati Maharaj’s reaction
The Gajapati Maharaj of Orissa Shri Dibya Singha Dev has also expressed his reaction over Swamiji’s murder. “The revered Swamiji had been working for the poor Vanvasis in Kandhamal district since last 40 years. He was the sole torch-bearer of Sanatan Dharma in the Vanvasi districts of the state. I had good relationship with Swamiji and I am deeply inspired by his divine qualities. His murder is very unfortunate. We lost a great saint who dedicated all his sadhnas and sidhhis for the service of the people. His precious life could have been saved if the government had taken appropriate measures for his protection. A proper probe should be conducted into his murder and government’s failure to provide him adequate security.”

Dr. Togadia’s statement
VHP’s International General Secretary Dr. Praveen Togadia fired heavy shells at the state government for its failure to provide protection to Swamiji. The government is in the mood to appease the Christian Community in the state, he said.

Violence will be met with violence, Togadia warns

IANS
10 Sep 2008 10:40:00 AM IST

NEW DELHI: Unfazed by the criticism his group has faced over the violence in Orissa, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia has said that violence against Hindus will be met with violence.

Even as he denied the involvement of the VHP, the radical Hindu group, in the attacks on the Christian community and churches in the state, he insisted that Hindus had the right to retaliate.

"If a violent religion is targeting a section of Hindu society, there would be a violent reaction," Togadia, a surgeon by profession, told IANS in a telephonic interview.

The trouble in Orissa started Aug 23 when gunmen shot dead VHP Orissa leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others at his ashram in the district of Kandhamal, 340 km from Bhubaneswar.

VHP supporters and tribals went on the offensive against the killings, attacking and torching Christian homes and churches in remote rural areas, leaving at least 16 people dead and many injured.

Thousands of poor Christians fled their homes and villages. As the bloodshed raged for days, the community frantically urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene to end the mayhem.

But Togadia insisted that Maoists did not kill Saraswati and that Christians were to blame.

"Maoists have nothing to do with this. The Orissa government is trying to save Christians in the area by releasing all these fake (information)," he said.

He added that the media was wrongly blaming him and his organisation unnecessarily.

"Don't blame me or my organisation for what is happening in Orissa. It is for the police and the judicial system to pinpoint who is to blame. In Orissa, it is a fight between tribals and Christians."

Asked how he was so sure of Christian involvement, Togadia replied: "All the circumstantial evidences go against Christians. Maoists do not have any history of conflict with us. Even the few who have been arrested are all Christians."

The VHP maintains that Christian missionaries are luring poor tribals to embrace Christianity.

Asked if re-conversions of Christians being carried out in Orissa was right, Togadia said: "We use the word conversion. We are against all conversions."

What about foreign nationals who become Hindus?

Togadia had a ready answer: "ISKCON is not targeting Christians while Christians target people with socio-economic problems for conversion. It is a planned activity. If somebody wants to convert, then Hindus don't have a problem."

India needs Stringent Anti-conversion law
http://indiasecular .wordpress. com/
V. Sundaram, ivarta.com

“Hinduism and many of the occult activities that come out of the Orient are inspired by demons and demon worship…There” s this concept that all religions are the same and all are good. That is not true. The worship of the Devil is not good” -Pat Robertson
(Pat Robert son is a typical intolerant Missionary that advocate keeping Hindus out of America while denouncing Hinduism as Demonic.)

Swami Laxmananand Saraswati and four of his disciples were killed in his ashram at Jalespata in Kandhamal District on Saturday-Krishna Jayanti Day - 23 August 2008. The Swami was relaxing at his Ashram at Jalespata when as many as thirty armed men gate-crashed and shot him and four others in this operation. The killing took place at a time, when the entire tribal community in that area was celebrating Janmashtami, the Birthday of Bhagwan Krishna.

The Hindu Seer had received a threat letter on Friday and he had informed the Tumulibandha Police Station and yet no security was given to this Swamij i. As a counter blast to the planned murder of this Swamiji by the terrorists, there has been an open mass Hindu rebellion in Orissa against this outrage during the last four days. When the body of the Swami was being carried to his main Ashram at Chakapada in a procession on the 24 August 2008, there was a sudden outburst of public outrage and violence all along the route. Three Churches and a vehicle were set on fire. Unidentified persons torched a “community shed”.

The police have arrested Pradesh Kumar Das, an employee of the World Vision, a Christian Charity, from Khadagpur while escaping from the district at Buguda. In another drive, the police have arrested Vikram Digal and William Digal. They have admitted to having joined a group of 28 other assailants.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the whole attack on Swami Laxmananand Saraswati has been planned, organised and launched by criminals hired by or belonging to well connected organizations in Orissa. Orissa VHP General Secretary Gauri Prasad Rath issued a statement to this effect on Sunday, 24 August 2008: “Christians have killed Swamji. We would give a fitting reply to it very soon. We want a high level probe into the whole issue and a ban on Churches working in the district. We would be forced to opt for violent protest if action is not taken against the killers. As a mark of protest, we would shut down Orissa on Monday. We have called a 12-hour shut down on Monday protesting against the killing”. True to their word, the VHP and other Hindu Organisations have paralyzed normal life in Orissa during the last 72 hours!

The open Hindu rebellion in Orissa can be compared in letter and spirit with the mass Hindu rebellion now taking place in Jammu. But there are vital differences between these two rebellions. In Jammu, the Hindu rebellion is directed against the pro-Muslim and anti-Hindu policies of the state government of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union government of Manmohan Singh. The Hindu rebellion in Orissa is directed against militant Christian Conversion Agencies like World Vision, Seventh Day Adventist Missionary Agencies etc. Fully backed by the money power of the West, especially the United States, these fraudulent anti-National Agencies are noted for their ridiculous vanity and unrestrained anti-Hindu autocracy.

The brutal murder of Swami Laxmananand Saraswati on 23 August 2008 is only the logical culmination of a criminal process that was let loose against him by Christian Conversion Agencies like World Vision in December 2007. In these columns, on 29 December 2007, I had written an article under the title “Attack on Laxmanananda by Christian Mob in Orissa” and I had put the photograph of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati lying in hospital in Cuttack after being savagely attacked by Christian marauders at Brahmanaigaon in Khandamal District on 24 December 2007.

THIS WAS DELIBERATELY CONCEALED BY ENGLISH MEDIA AT THAT TIME.
A grand old-man of more than 80 years Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati has been leading the Anti-Conversion Movement in the undivided Phulbani District of Orissa for several decades. He has served the local tribal people, especially Kandhs, in this District with selfless devotion and unsurpassed public spirit, which has won for him the lasting trust and affection of the local people. Saffron-clad Swamiji, with his Ashram at Chakapad, has spread his wings through Seva and Sanskar among the tribal people in the region. Thus his contribution to the socio-economic empowerment of these poor people has posed a major threat to the illegal conversion activities of anti-national missionary agencies.

There have been almost 7 attempts on the life of Swamiji in the last several years. At last they succeeded in killing him on Krishna Jayanti Day last week. The murderous attack on the 80-year-old Hindu monk who for decades has been campaigning against the proselytizing activities of Christian missionaries in tribal-dominated areas of Orissa, only serves to highlight the conflict caused by conversions through deceit and subterfuge. Orissa has long suffered on account of Christian missionaries “harvesting the souls” of impoverished and un-educated tribals by exploiting their vulnerability and innocence.

(contd.)

contd..

The unrestrained conversion of tribals and other poor people to Christianity has always met with resistance, initially by Hindu community leaders at large and later by organised groups, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Following the report of the Niyogi Commission in Madhya Pradesh in 1956, Orissa became the first State to adopt a law against forcible or surreptitious conversion. Yet, despite the legal restrictions, Christian missionaries continue to flock to poverty-hit areas of Orissa (as well as other States) to convert tribals and Dalits through inducement and other equally objectionable means.

The resultant inevitable social conflict is only to be expected: Neither secularism nor tolerance means that society should ignore the illicit “harvesting of souls” by International Missionary Agencies using their unlimited global funds for forced or induced illegal conversions banned by law. Swami Laxmananda Saraswati would not have been brutally murdered if the Police and other Law Enforcement Authorities had not been so lax, especially since the police were aware of the threat to his life. Blaming the Maoists makes no sense; it is a shoddy effort to suppress the truth. However, in view of the past 7 attempts on Swamiji”s life against his successful anti-conversion drive, it is quite possible that the Christian terrorists used the Maoists as hired instruments for Contract Killing or it may have been a jointly planned operation.

The police have arrested Pradesh Kumar Das, an employee of the World Vision, a Christian Charity who has admitted to having joined a group of 28 other assailants who killed swamiji.

The fact of the matter is that neither the Christian Conversion Agencies, the Congress and other secular parties nor the mainline English media want to understand the simple fact that our Constitution sanctions “freedom” only for the practice and propagation of any faith or religion and certainly not for induced or forced “conversion”.

This fact was asserted by the Supreme Court of India as well, way back in a landmark verdict in 1977, (Stanislaus V State of Madhya Pradesh, AIR 1977 SC 908). The Supreme Court declared that the fundamental right under Article 25 of Indian Constitution (the freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion) is not an absolute right, unlike some other fundamental rights like protection of life and liberty (Article 21) and right against exploitation (Article 23). The Supreme Court decided that Article 25 is subject to public order, morality and health and to the other provisions of Part III of the Constitution.
It also said that “propagation” of one”s religion couldn”t impinge on the “freedom of conscience” of other citizens. As a matter of fact, the State of Madhya Pradesh has been having an anti-conversion law in its statute books for the last 40 years and its constitutional validity was upheld by the Supreme Court in 1977 itself. We have a similar law in Orissa dating back to 1967.

With the advent of the UPA government in 2004, in the last four years, induced/forced evangelization has been on the increase throughout the country to an alarming extent and the need of the hour is a stringent “Anti-conversion law” and its strong enforcement.
The UPA government today has become an apex missionary organisation for pro-Christian, and pro-Muslim propaganda. The out-going Bush Administration in USA and the equally UPA Government in New Delhi are acting together to evangelise India in a manner, reminiscent of the dark Days of the Holy Spanish Inquisition in 16th century Europe and Portuguese Inquisition in Goa from 1500 to 1812. The Hindus of Jammu and Orissa have risen in open revolt. I have no doubt that if the Christian agencies in India and the union government do not mend their ways, there is going to be a similar Hindu rebellion in the rest of India.

"Proselytizing under the cloak of humanitarian work is unhealthy, to say the least" and "If I had the power and could legislate, I should stop all proselytising. ... it is the deadliest poison that ever sapped the fountain of truth."

--Mohandas Karamchnd Gandhi

Conversation b/w me and an evangelist (E):

Me: Why....then do you wish that the person should convert?

E: It is faith that motivates us. It is not easy to work in remote and alien cultures without faith. Our Christian belief is that we should be baptized as children of Christ. We therefore bring the faith of Christ to the downtrodden.

Me: I agree you do a great job......if you wish to see a person baptized, and that is the reason you will give him food, then can I say that your faith is selfish?

E: No, how can we be selfish? We are doing the work of the Lord. Our religion is not at all selfish. [] cannot be understood in terms of selfishness......The fact that a person might convert is like an incentive for us to work in remote places. It is motivation.

Me: Am sorry I didn't wish to convey that the Christian faith is selfish. I believe in Christ too. I was instead trying to show that perhaps individuals who profess the Christian faith are selfish. If they are genuinely concerned about poverty, will they not be willing to help regardless of faith?

E: Your expectations are high. As humans, we are weak and we live in sin. It is faith that motivates us to move beyond ourselves. It is because of the call of our faith that our beloved brothers and sisters in Christ take up the work of spreading His word to whosoever is willing to listen and be uplifted.

Me: I agree that without the motivation of faith it is difficult to work in such inhuman conditions. But still I feel there is a difference in being selfless and selfish. A motive need not become motivation....(giving an example abt someone)....(this lady) has done free surgeries all her life. She never asked her patients their religion. She didn't do surgeries based on whether or not they were willing to convert to Sri Vaishavism...For her also, it is her faith that motivates her, but I think she has been selfless....(i wouldn't) consider any of it as part of anyones' expectation.

E: (very upset). Well, everone in this world cannot be the same.....

Me: Am very sorry Sir, I do wish to upset you....am only putting things as I see it in my perspective...you are right that everyone cannot be the same. Personally, the only two things that upset me are that instead on concentrating on the good things of Christianity, most of the time missionaries seem to indulge in making comparisons between Hinduism and Christianity with the intension of showing Hinduism in the negative light. And while missionaries do help alleviate poverty, they do not realise that they also replace culture. ...(giving example of nagaland and north-eastern places)....do you wish to see that their ancient knowledge, ancient practices, their culture is erased...

E: We have no intension of replacing anyone's culture. We only help in eradicating poverty.

[Any comments from anyone abt this conversation? Does anyone think it is necessary to have a 'motive for motivation'?]

[end note: i agree Christian charities have done a good job in alleviating poverty. It is natural for a Hindu to seek his own betterment first until economies made him self-sufficient first].

BJP government orders probe into Christian funds

PTI

BANGALORE: Facing criticism for the recent spate of attacks on churches in Karnataka, the BJP government on Tuesday ordered a probe into the flow of foreign funds to some organisations saying that the money was being used for converting Hindus into Christianity.

"It has come to the knowledge of the state government that some organisations are using foreign funds, they are getting, for conversion of majority Hindus into Christianity," Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa charged and declared that such things would not be allowed.

"In the backdrop of reports about forcible conversions in parts of the state, which led to attacks on churches, the government has ordered a scrutiny of such accounts which receive foreign funds for conversion," he told reporters after chairing a high-level meeting to review the law and order situation in the troubled areas.

Attributing conversions as the main reason for Sunday's attack on churches and prayer halls in parts of two coastal districts and Malnad region's Chikmagalur, he said he had ordered an enquiry into the foreign funds that were being deployed for conversions.

Yeddyurappa charged the opposition Congress and JD(S) with attempting to destabilise his government and also rejected their demand for a judicial probe into the attack on churches.

He also rejected the opposition demand for his resignation and that of Home Minister Dr V S Acharya and shot back asking, "will the UPA government quit office because of terror strikes?"

Yeddyurappa said that the attacks had taken place in areas where there was conversion activity taking place and said stern action would be taken against those responsible.

Despite the mounting tension, Mangalore, the scene of violent protests remained calm on Tuesday and observed a bandh called by the Sri Ram Sena. Shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed, police said.

They said about 170 persons have been arrested in connection with the attacks on churches in Mangalore, Udupi and Chikmagalur.

As a precautionary measure, the authorities extended the prohibitory orders clamped in Mangalore till September 19. On Sunday, the ban order was imposed for three days.

Dear Friends,

The secularists attack Hinduism by their constitutional and legal means of dividing and sub-dividing Hindus into numerous castes and grouping them into SC/ST/BC/MBC/OBC/FC and so on. This has also given rush among these groups to become ST from SC and from MBC to SC and form OBC to MBC and from FC into OBC! In fact a gentleman had posted in this blog that even some 30 years ago there were not a single person declared as FC in some schools!

All these degradations that give equality of citizens a good-bye, a stellar achievement of the Congress secularism, has brought about the one and only thing viz. the abominable attack on Hindus to disintegrate them. The Christian missionaries take full advantage to denigrate the Hindu way of life, their Gods and their culture. Making use of the perceived divisions and subdivisions created by the secular govt. the Christian missionaries. by making use of the freedom of religion provisions under the secular constitution, convert the Hindus enmasse into Christianity with foreign money and papal blessing.

Hindus have started waking up to this danger of disintegration and have begun to resist the attack. The following is a news item put out by the TNN about such resitence organized by the Hindus. This does not mean that the conversion of Hindus will come to an end. Quite the contrary. There will be stiff resistance on the part of the Christian missionaries using legal and constitutional provisions with the backing of secular press and the international goons and money power with which the beaten Hindus have nothing to match.

Ultimately the overthrow of this constitution replaced by one that guarantees the safety and the security of the Hindus alone can be our solution.

'Inducements lure poor to convert'

17 Sep 2008, 0210 hrs IST,
Rishikesh Bahadur Desai,

TNN

BANGALORE: Raju Gouda of Ucchangi Durga in Davanagere district has changed his religion twice, but not his name. He was born a Veerashaiva and converted to Christianity in his 20s.

A few years later, he met VHP volunteers who were involved in
reconversion. He came back to Hinduism after a few meetings with them. Now, Gouda leads the re-conversion movement.

Similar is the case of many others.
" The reconversion movement is slowly taking root across Karnataka. We have already succeeded in bringing back over 50,000 converts," said Ga Ra Suresh, who oversees VHP's Paravarthana movement.

He is convinced that none of the reconverts have gone back to
Christianity. To him, the process is not reconversion. " We call it
mainstreaming," he added. Paravarthana focuses on the recent convert.

" We are not bothered about Christians who have been converted
centuries ago. They embraced that faith under different
socio-political conditions. Christian beliefs and practices are
ingrained in them. We don't touch them. Our primary targets are those who have been converted by inducement, or under duress, in recent decades," Suresh said.

According to him,
Protestant para-church organizations like the New Life institution(that was targeted in Mangalore and Chikmagalur) are into large-scale illegal conversions. " Such organizations can't be called churches. They are run by salaried employees whose job is proselytizing," he said.

According to him, such people are more likely to become the targets of attacks by rightist organizations, rather than priests. They choose particular caste groups in different districts.

In Hyderabad-Karnataka region, they target Madigas (scheduled castes). In North Karnataka districts like Bijapur and Gadag, they have converted Lambanis, and in Bagalkot and Dharwad districts, Kurubas have been converted.

"Most of the time, they use a neo-convert to carry on conversions," he said.
According to him, converts are induced with land, free education for children and other gifts like sewing machines." Most conversions happen in hospitals. The poor who are denied quality healthcare are impressed by the way missionary hospitals are run. They become easy targets," he said.

He does not completely accept the argument that low caste Hindus convert to escape untouchability and atrocities by the upper castes. " This is not fully true. There may be some such cases. But escaping caste-based discrimination is not the only reason behind conversion," he said.
According to him, caste-based discrimination exists even among Christians.

" There are separate churches for Dalit Christians. Upper caste
converts don't marry lower caste converts. In fact, several churches in Kollegal have —— for Dalit Christians and others," he said. The process of reconversion is simple. Paravarthana volunteers visit the house of the converts regularly, and convince them of the need to come back. They are told stories about the achievements of saints and leaders from lower castes. The volunteers ensure that they regain pride in their community and Hinduism.

When the family is ready to reconvert, the members are given Ganga jal or 'gomutra' (cow urine) to drink. A swamiji of the same caste or from a Veerashaiva mutt visits their house and performs the 'ling dharana' ritual to bring them back.
Most of these families embrace Veerashaivism.

" They become followers of Basavanna, who had produced saints from all castes," Suresh said. Paravarathana also seeks the Arya Samaj, which has been carrying out the Shuddhi reconversion movement for nearly a century.
Arya Samajis perform a small homa and issue a certificate.

This works well for large-scale reconversions.

Folks,

Out of all this mayhem, murders, violence, conversions and reconversions, do we ever for a minute as Hindus stop to think why so many of our brethren are so willing to convert, induced by money?

What have we as Hindus contributed to the thoughts in some of our own brothers and sisters that religion is not that important to them?

This is time for reflection.

Regards,
KRS

KRS,

Yea, sure. I don't see an element of disgust in you at our Hindu brothern being poached by these Christian missionaries.

Why don't you say what you think first?

Dear KRS-ji,

Very happy to see you again :D Also I saw Kunjuppu sir had posted elsewhere. Delighted to see you both back.

some personal observations:

1) Hindu institutions are not well funded. Their outreach is limited. Therefore awareness over a larger population is limited.

2) The general idea of what consitutues Hindusim is limited, even amongst practicing hindus. [Example, ppl cannot explain - why pray to a lingam, why pray to idols, why burn everything in a fire mess, why have sooo many gods, why are gods like this and like that, etc].

3) People may not exactly feel association with hinduism because what was taught to them about it since their childhood is limited. When one is derided for holding on a faith 'like that' by a few smart ppl, there is little one can do alone. (Ps: some of us and the religion are not glamorous type in today's world).

4) The political-caste system is the biggest and the best provision for a great harvest.

5) Sometimes elders and even a few temple priests are not able to provide satisfactory answers for some questions posed to them. Some questions are very difficult to ask them too.

6) One might collect a good many books. But to get lucky and have someone explain parts of it, is like a shower of blessings once in a blue moon. So the number of teachers who can explain scriptures is limited.

The positive side:

1) There are temples that provide lessons on shlokas and understanding some scriptures to young children in the present time.

2) The internet is a blessing to source information and content. Answers can always be googled for.

Some suggestions wud be: providing Sanskrit language learning lessons to both adults and children for a fee; and wider availibility of books on various hindu philosophies, vedic mathematics, etc.

Conversion is terrorism!

Wed, 17 Sep, 2008,02:56 PM
. Recently there has been violence in areas of Orissa, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka and some places of worship of Christians have come under attack. On the face of it, they will look like concerted attacks on the minority community by the forces of Hindutva.
. But it is a facile conclusion to arrive at. Without condoning the violence, it has to be remembered that all these areas which are in ferment have been hunting gorunds for predatory missionaries out to ‘harvest souls’ for their religion.

Particularly the tribal belt of Orissa was highly vulnerable to forceful and deceitful conversions. Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswathi, who had been manfully fighting the mercenary missionaries for decades, was killed (after several botched attempts before).

Though the Christians claim that the killing was carried out by Maoists, the fact of the matter is that the Maoists had no real enmity with the sadhu. The Christian community tried to play victims over the retaliatory attacks and closed down for a day Catholic educational institutions across the country.

It is an open secret that the Church and missionaries have been indulging in proselytisation ever since they set foot on Indian soil. The different denominations of the church have mushroomed to such a great extent that today’s thatched roof is tomorrow’s sprawling worship place.

And every time the issue of conversion is raised, the church conveniently hides behind the alibi of ‘freedom to practice religion’, which is enshrined in the Constitution. The dubious distinction here is conversions actulally hit at the freedom to practice one’s religion.

Christian organisations have different methods of operations in converting the gullible masses. Money, education, health, threat, allurement, force and enculturation are some of the tricks of the trade. The focus of attack is usally vulnerable individuals, indigent communities, riven caste groups, poor & downtrodden, sick patients and unskilled labourers depending upon the circumstances and environment.

The two main planks they operate on are education and health care. Again, the missionaries’ mendacity lie in the fact they have managed to make a case for seeing the failure of successive governments as the failure of the Hindu religion.

To be sure, if the masses remain downtrodden and rooted in backwardness, But Hindu religion is not to blame for that. That untouchability and caste discrmination is actually a failing of the State is lost on even the most honest liberal. For, true Hinduism, as it scriptures prove, has no place for discrimination.

In a sense, the missionaries have (mis)used the misundertanding on Hinduism. The claim of the churches is even more dubious in the light of casteism being rampant in Christianity itself (Dalit Christians are given a raw deal in every church).

The vaunted cry of Christians that they don’t indulge in conversions doesn’t square up with the reality obtaining in the streets. The talk of conversions being volitional in nature is also proved wrong by mass conversions. How can there be ‘mass’ change of mind?

Churches also play the dangerous game of provocation. In Mangalore, Udipi and Chickmagalur districts of Karnataka, where violence have been reported, the New Life Church has distributed pamphlets ‘portraying’ Brahmma, Vishnu And Shiva as ‘jokers’ consumed by lust and anger, Oorvashi as daughter of Vishnu and a prostitute and that Sage Vasishta was born to that prostitute, Krishna as a shady character wallowing in darkness of hell.

This has been going on for years throughout the country as the famed tolerance of the HIndus is taken as an advantage. What the Christians have failed to understand is that the awareness among the majority community has increased manifold and that they have started feeling ‘enough is enough’.

The pseudo-secular politicians and the mainstream media cannot attribute the retaliation to specific Hindu organisations anymore.

The Hindu majority itself has started rising against the illegal, arrogant and blatant conversions and the earlier a stringent central anti-conversion law is enacted, the better.

DENIGRATION OF HINDU GODS IS THE REAL REASON

FOR ATTACK ON CHRISTIANS IN MANGALORE
Author Deepak Kamat
The Following are the list of abuses from one such book – Satya Darshini – distributed by the missionaries of New Life. This book is in Kannada and the translation of the abusive passage is as follows.
· Urvashi – the daughter of Lord Vishnu – is a prostitute. Vashitha is the son of this prostitute. He in turn married his own Mother. Such a degraded person is the Guru of the Hindu God Rama. (page 48)
· When Krishna himself is wallowing in darkness of hell, how can he enlighten others? Since Krishna himself is a shady character, there is a need for us to liberate his misled followers. (page 50)
· It was Brahma himself who kidnapped Sita. Since Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were themselves the victims of lust, it is a sin to consider them as Gods. (page 39)
· When the Trinity of Hinduism (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) are consumed by lust and anger, how can they liberate others. Their projection as Gods is nothing but a joke. (page 39).
· When Vishnu asked Brahma to commit a sin, he immediately did so. How can such a “evil brahma” be a Creator of this Universe? How is it possible for both the sinner and the entity which provoked the sin to be gods? (page 39)
· God, please liberate the sinful people of India who are worshipping False Gods that believe in the pleasures of illicit ‘Vyabichari’ relationships. (Page 39).
2. All the 16 incidents that took place were not attack on Churches. In fact, unauthorized prayer halls were attacked where the blasphemous pamphlets were distributed and aggressive proselytisation was taking place. These 16 incidents were not localized but took place across three districts of Mangalore, Udupi and Chikmagalur.

3. The only place where attacks took place apart from New Life Prayer Halls was at a small prayer hall in the premises of Milagres Church in Mangalore, where some miscreants had damaged a Jesus idol. The VHP and the Bajrang Dal have condemned the attack at this place. Following this incident, a Christian mob gathered and the situation went out of control as the mob started pelting stones and disrupting traffic. The police was forced to intervene and this resulted in unsavoury violence.
4. Since the past two days, it is not Hindu-Christian clashes that are taking place. In fact, it is more appropriate to call it”Christian- Police” clashes since the Christians holed up in Churches have engaged themselves in pelting of stones and disruption of traffic. The Police were forced to enter the Church to clear the mob and they found arms inside the Church.
5. Incidents of Stabbing were reported in around four or five places across Mangalore district. In fact, an activist belonging to Shri Ram Sena was stabbed which led to a bandh call by Shri Ram Sena – a Hindu outfit that is not connected to Sangh Parivar.
6. The VHP and the Bajrang Dal have condemned the desecration of Jesus idol at the prayer hall adjacent to the Milagres Church in Mangalore. They have also clarified that they are not against the Catholic faith and the Churches. However, they have clarified that the public outcry would continue as long as illicit conversion activities and blasphemy of Hindu gods take place.
7. Even the Kandhmahal murder — which involved the killing of Hindu monk Swami Lakshmananda by missionaries – seems to have caste a shadow on this incident since the general public seems to have seen through Christian aggression.
8. It may be recalled that there was a public outcry against illegal prayer halls in Davanagere district last week. In that case, the administration had closed the unauthorized prayer halls that were mushrooming in the region.

Who gave the Christian urchins such liberties to denigrate our faith and our Gods?

Must be the Italian

Dear Kamakshi Ji,

'Poaching' only occurs if there is an unwilling and unsuspecting victim. Any attempts to convert anyone to any religion by force is against the law of the land. So, the law exists on the books today at the Central government level, for affected parties to pursue if such forceful conversions occur. I have long stated my views on this odious practice of the missionaries and I do not need to repeat them each time.

Our focus should be more towards Hindu unity and strengthening from within. If the missionaries are to go away, then what? Will the Hindu society suddenly become united, devoid of all the divisions created by castes, untouchability, parochialism etc., etc.?

Regards,
KRS

KRS,

Yea, sure. I don't see an element of disgust in you at our Hindu brothern being poached by these Christian missionaries.

Why don't you say what you think first?

KRS,

Why are you so cynical? What perturbs you?

Hindus are being hit hard from Kashmir to Kanyakumari by alien religionists. Hindus have every reason to be agitated.

This is the result of years and years of conversion. The British colonialists didn't even make a dent into converting Hindus in their 200 years of rule but this Secularists' rule of sixty years are turning the country upside down with some states in the North-East going over to Christianity. There is an international conspiracy to turn India into a vassal state of the papacy all because the constitution gives them a free hand.

But you ignore this and talk of law against conversion.

Perhaps you are so used to living in the States that you are not aware of what law in this country means. We have laws against corruption. Yes indeed! But we witnessed even MPs were bought like cattle to save this secular govt. This is a regular phenomenon in the making and unmaking of governments.

You should come down to live and work in this country for a couple of years like any honest citizen. You will realize how the laws are used more in flouting by the very guys who enact them and those who are entrusted to keep them.

Sir, in this country the law isn't what you think it is. Most of the time it is used as a weapon against the innocents instead of the criminals. And believe me, those who use these weapons are terrible criminals in politicians to cops' clothes.

Dear Kamakshi Ji,

Years of conversion? What is the percentage of minorities in India today? Years of conversion and years of Muslim polygamy resulting in tremendous increase in population - can you cite any scientific facts to claim increases in these populations?

I can already expect your answer - the Government is too corrupt to give out real percentages, or look at specific areas in India that are lost to the minorities.

I have lived in India for a couple of years as recently as eight years ago. I was in a position to observe the society and the government from a very vantage point. I even got sued. I had the first hand knowledge about corruption and what and how the individuals think.

I don't carry the notion that Hinduism is declining. In fact I got the opposite impression. I saw pockets of influence from other religions, which always existed in modern India, but nothing overt. My own old neighborhood had gone through changes, but nothing to the extreme. I saw the influence of Gulf money in the villages of Tamil Nadu, but then we have long abandoned those villages. I saw important temples thriving and crowded. I guess I just did not see a beseiged culture that you seem to see, in terms of our culture and life.

Granted, Brahmins in TN are not treated well, but then, I also saw a fairly affluent Brahmin community. I also saw a lots of poor Brahmins as well as lots of poor NBs as well.

Yes, the legal system at the lower levels are probably corrupt. But then they reflect the society. People have given up and do not fight for a clean government anymore. But I know, with the increase in the middle class, it will surely come.

Regards,
KRS

Unable to tackle terror, UPA targets NDA

In a move that is bound to trigger a major political controversy, the Centre has decided to invoke Article 355 of the Constitution to issue directives to NDA-ruled Orissa and BJP-ruled Karnataka to restore law and order in view of incidents of attacks on churches.

Article 355 is a rarely used constitutional provision that typically holds out the threat of dismissal of the State Government and imposition of President's rule if the warning of the Centre goes unheeded.

Sources said the Home Ministry has been asked to formally issue directives to both these States after the matter was debated at the highest level in the Government. It was felt that the best way to counter the BJP's onslaught on the UPA's failure to effectively deal with terrorism was to equate the VHP and Bajrang Dal with SIMI and anti-national outfits.

Sources said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had directed Home Minister Shivraj Patil in the first week of this month to issue a directive to the Orissa Government under Article 355 of the Constitution. Sources said the Home Ministry issued the first directive to Orissa under Article 355 on September 12, and this will be second such intervention.

Sources said President Pratibha Pail had also discussed the Orissa and Karnataka situations with the Home Minister and the Prime Minister after several Christian organisations submitted a memorandum to her demanding invocation of Article 355.

Article 355 has been invoked in rarest cases in India, much less than even much abused Article 356. According to the Constitution, the Article should be invoked only in extreme cases of external aggression and complete breakdown of law and order. ..
