பிள்ளைகள் இல்லை கணவன் மூலம்;

# 135.The boon and the curse.

Sooran was a famous leader of the YAdhavAs.He had a pretty, good natured and lovely daughter whose name was Prutha. Kuntibojan was childless and adopted this girl. She was thence called as Kunti.Devi.

When DurvAsa rishi visited her father, Kunti served him well and took excellent care of him. The rishi was pleased with her and taught her a mantra and gave her a boon.

She could call any God with her mantra and beget a son with the amsam and tejas of the God. Kunti was very pleased with this boon.Any logical mind would wonder!

Why should she get sons with the help of Gods when she has her husband! Apparently the rishi could foresee her future and the need for this boon.

King PAndU whom Kunti married went for hunting.A rishi and his wife had assumed the forms of two deers and were playing amorously. He shot an arrow and killed one of the deers.

The rishi cursed him that if ever he united with his wife, he would die immediately. Pandu became very sad and unhappy. He went to the forest with his two wives and lived the life of brahmachari.

With the permission of PAndU,the wives called the dEvatAs and got five sons-the pAndavAs.

The boon may precede the curse or the curse may precede the boon. But every curse God also gives boon and balances them in a subtle way!

# 34. THE MONKEY AND THE PEANUTS.

Desire is the root cause of all evils! Nobody can challenge or deny this statement. Affection is rightly called as 'paasam'. It is the invisible rope that binds a person to everyone and everything he loves.

Whatever we willingly give up, cannot cause us sorrow or misery any more. When we clutch the feet of a person, we automatically bestow on him / her the right to kick us. Nothing should be given more importance than it really deserves.

A narrow mouthed jar was filled with finely roasted peanuts - spreading an inviting aroma all around the jar. A monkey put its hand through the narrow mouth of the jar and grabbed a handful of nuts. It could take out its hand only if it lets go of all the peanuts - which it did not want to. The man who had set out the nuts was sure to catch hold of the monkey and punish it. It may lose either the peanut or its freedom but probably both of them!

A rich old man complained that he wanted to leave all his attachments to the world - but the world did not allow him to do so! This is just like a man hugging a tree and stating that the tree does not let him go! We are all doing the same thing and giving the same explanation!

It is time to realize that NO ONE is really indispensable! The world will keep moving all the same - in spite of everything and everyone. It is our imagination that we make the world go round and but for us, it will come to a grinding halt!

We have complete freedom to choose any one of the two in each of these pairs!
Attachment or liberation, shackles or freedom, the world or the God, dissatisfaction of our mind or satisfaction of our mind, samsaaraa or mukthi, sorrow or peace of mind.

All the choices are in our hands, yet we choose to suffer like ignorant fools!

# 136.Pride and Punishment.

YAdavAs became very haughty since Krishna was one of them. Krishna grew worried sensing their arrogance and decided to wipe away His race before He returned to Vaikuntham.

He made the necessary arrangements without anyone's knowledge. Sages ViswAmithrA, VAmadEvA, Vashitha were all invited by Him to go over to PindAraga Theertham.

The friends of SAmban, Krishna's son, dressed him up as a woman and asked the sages whether 'the lady' would deliver a son or a daughter.

The rishis who knew that he was a man, got very annoyed and cursed that he would bear an iron pestle which would wipe away their race.

Samban became pregnant with an iron pestle and delivered it in due course. They reported the matter to the king.He promptly ordered them to power the pestle and throw it in water.

The iron tip of the pestle was swallowed by a fish. A hunter named Jaran got it from the fish and fixed it as the tip of one of his arrows.

The powder of the pestle grew into thick tall grasses along the bank.When all the yAdavAs went to PrabAsa kshEthram, they got intoxicated by drinking wine and started fighting among themselves.

When they ran out of asthrams, they grabbed the grass and stared hitting with it. Each grass transformed into an iron pestle and very soon all of them got killed.

BalarAm sat in yOga samAdhi and returned to vaikuntham.

Jaran, the hunter who had fixed the iron tip to his arrow, shot it at krihsna's foot-mistaking it to be the face of a deer.

The conch, the discus, the mace, the chariot and KrishanA all went beck to Vaikuntham

We can tease and play with our equals. But if we try to do so with venerable people, we must also be ready to face the unpleasant consequences!

# 35. THE GREEN EYED MONSTER.

The house into which the Ameena (the revenue officer appointed by the court ) and a tortoise enter, will perish!

There is something which is even more dangerous than these two. It is the green-eyed-monster called Jealousy.

A mind corrupted by jealousy is a demon-in-disguise.

The person suffering from jaundice sees everything as yellow colored.

To the mind corrupted by jealousy, everything appears wrong - as they are viewed through a colored lens.

Jealousy creates an unending chain of suspicion. Where love becomes thin, faults become thick. Every action will be projected as a major crime.

The only way out is to make ones mind devoid of jealousy. When jealousy the root cause of all the other mental pollutions is removed completely, life will become happy again.

# 137. Devotee of His devotees.

Ambareesan was the son of King NaAbAgan. He was a gnAni, and a staunch devotee of Lord VishnU.He treated everyone equally. He had humility, vairAgyam and vivEkam.Lord VishnU was so pleased with him that He appointed His sudharsana chakram for protecting Ambareesan.

Ambareesan observed DwAdasi vratham and gave gift of cows to brahmins. DhurvAsa came to visit the king. He was invited for a feast and went for a bath. The time for completing the vratham had come but the rishi had not returned.

So the king drank some water and completed his vratham. DurAsA knew his through his gnAna dhrushti and became mad with anger. He created a demon from his matted hair to kill Ambareesan.

The King was not afraid of the demon. Sudarsanam destroyed the demon and started chasing the rishi all over the three worlds.

The rish sought Brahma's protection in vain. Siva in KailAsh advised him to go to Vishnu. Vishnu said, "I am a devotee of my devotees. There is nothing I can do! Seek the pardon of Ambareesan against whom you gave sinned."

The rishi fell at the king's feet. The king ordered the discus to spare the rishi.Thus the king defied the terrifying curse of a brahmin and established the greatness of a devotee.

# 36. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL!

The colors White and black form a wonderful combination. Day and night follow each other. If the day is 24 hours long - it will be very tedious. If the night is 24 hours long, life will become very gloomy and miserable.

We have several more of such opposite pairs existing in our world.

Heat and cold form one such pairs;
Sunshine and rain form another such pair;

Happiness and Sorrow form one such pair;
Victory and Defeat form another;

Prosperity and Adversity form one such pairs;
Growth and decay form another pair;

Profit and Loss form one such pairs;
Likes and Dislikes form another pair;

Plenty and Scarcity form one such pair;
Fame and ill fame form another pair;

Respect and Disrespect form one such pairs;
Acceptance and Rejection form another pair of opposites.

Most people lose their equanimity by each of these opposing factors.

Only when we develop the mental attitude to accept everything as God's 'prasaadam' to us, can we live happily and peacefully on the face of the earth.

மாடு, கன்றுகளும் போனவைகளே;

# 138. Brahma's trick!

Lord Krishna's favorite food was curd-rice and pickles. After wandering behind the cows and calves, Krishna and His cowherd friends would become hungry and thirsty.They would sit down on the sand dunes of the river Yamuna and enjoy the refreshing meal of curd-rice and pickles.

One afternoon as they settled down to eat, the cows and calves wandered away and were not to be seen. Krishna told his friends to continue to eat while He would go in search of the cattle.

Brahma had hidden all the cows and calves by his maayaasakthi. When Krishna returned, He found that all His friends had disappeared too, without a trace! He could not go back home all alone by Himself. So He transformed Himself to as many cows, calves and boys that were missing and returned to Gokulum.

The parents rejoiced the return of the cattle and the boys-more than ever before! This drama continued for one full year-since a day in Brahma's world is equal to one year on the earth.No one knew about the miracle Krishna was performing-including His loyal elder brother Balram.

On the next day when Brahma looked down, he could not believe his eyes! All the cows and calves were grazing as usual and the boys whom he had hidden were playing in the sand!

He realized the great mistake he had committed, knelt in front of Krishna and begged for His pardon."I was filled with ego and failed to recognize your true greatness. I thought you were a mere cowherd.You can be truly known only through Gnaanam and bakthi. Grant me those, so that I will never commit a similar mistake"

Krishna was happy to get back his real friends and the cattle! He made them forget the recent events and they all returned home in the evening as if nothing unusual had happened.

Krishna was better understood by the innocent and ignorant gopaalaas than the proud and conceited Brahma!

# 37. WHO IS MORE INDISPENSABLE?

This was the topic of discussion among all the different parts of a human body one fine day. No one knew the right answer and so they all started arguing among themselves.

The hands asked, "How will the body eat food without our help?"

The legs demanded to know, "How can the body move from to place without our assistance?

"We swallow the food and help in the digestion!" said the mouth, the teeth and the tongue.

"How will the body digest the food and assimilate it with our assistance?" demanded the stomach and the intestines.

The eye, the nose, the ear and each and every part of the body glorified itself as the most indispensable part of the human body.When no decision could be arrived at, all the parts went on an indefinite lightning
strike.

Soon the whole body became very weak; the eyes became dull; the ears could not hear anymore as if they were stuffed with cotton; the voice won't rise; the brain became dizzy.

Suddenly the truth dawned on all of them. None of them was more important or less important in maintaining the fitness of the body!

They all were equally important for the body's good health. Only when each and everyone of them functioned properly, the body will remain in good shape.

The indefinite strike was immediately called off! All the parts were happy to return to their original functions. The body became strong and active as before.

#139. த்ரி வக்ரா.

அஷ்ட வக்ரன் கதையை அறிவோம்;

# 139. Thri Vakraa.

Names like the Asta vakra and Thri vakra, denote the deformity in the person's body and not in the mind, intellect or greatness!

Kamsan had invited Krishna and Balram for the Dhanur Yagam in the city of Mathura.The two divine brothers were given a tear filled farewell by the Gokulavaasis.

They reached Mathura and were walking majestically in the streets of the City. A beautiful woman but with three distortions in her body, crossed their path.

Her name was Thri Vakra. She was an expert in preparing sandal paste and used to supply to Kamsan everyday.

She offered the brothers the sandal paste she had prepared. Krishna and Balram felt kindly disposed to that pretty but deformed lady. Krishna decided to straighten the three distortions in her body.

He pressed down her feet with his own feet and lifted her face with his two fingers placed under her chin.

Lo and behold! Her distortions straightened and she became the most beautiful damsel in all the three worlds!

A mere dharshan of Krishna is enough to make miracles happen! If his sparsam or touch is also added to his grace what miracle would be impossible in the world?

# 38. THE SAINT AND THE SERPENT.

A saint was walking through a village. He was horrified to see a black cobra which killed everyone in the village, who dared to cross its path!

He told the cobra," Killing is a sin! It should be avoided at all costs. Do not kill any one in the future with your poisonous fangs".

The saint happened to pass through the same village some time later. Now he was shocked to see the cobra with many bleeding wounds on it s body - scarcely alive!
He asked it what had caused such a state of affairs?

The snake replied, "It was because I listened to your advice and stopped killing people. They became very bold and started hitting me with sticks and stones - reducing me to this miserable condition!"

The saint replied, "I told you not to bite them. I never said you should not hiss to frighten them. You will be considered a snake only as long as you hiss. Otherwise you will be considered no better than a mere rope. One should not give up totally his inherent swabhaavam".

The snake understood the saint's message rightly this time. He hissed to frighten away the people who came to hit him with stones or beat him with sticks. He lived for several years without killing anyone in the village and also without getting hit by them.

One should never give up one's natural disposition completely and become vulnerable in the eyes of the others.

தேவகி வசுதேவருக்கு, நோற்றுப் பெற்ற புதல்வன்;

பொல்லாத கம்சனுக்கு, அச்சம் தரும் காலதேவன்;

யோகியருக்கு, எல்லாம் வல்ல பரமாத்மா;

Everyday, each one of us play different roles and assume dasa avataarams!

A man is a son to his father; and a father to his son;
a grandson to his grandfather and a grandfather to is grandson;
a younger brother to his elder brother, and an elder brother to his younger brother;
a student to his teachers, and a teacher to his students;
a son in law to his father in law and a father in law to his son in law.

Krishna also appeared to assume different roles in the eyes of the beholders, when he lived on the earth as an avatar.

To all the men in the world, Krishna appeared as a 'gem-among-men'!
To all the women, Krishna appeared as Manmathan.
To all the Gopaalaas He appeared as their bosom friend.
To all the gopikas, He was their secret lover;.
To Devaki and Vasudev, He was their eighth son.
To the wicked people, He was the Dharma Devan.
To Kansan He appeared as Yama Dharman.
To the general public He was a young boy in great trouble.
To the yogis He appeared as Paramaatma.
To the Gnaanis, He appeared as the gnana dhaathaa.

This is how Krishna appeared to the different people when he entered the durbar of Kansan.

# 39. Crocodile tears.

A monkey living on a tree near a river and a crocodile lining in the river were thick friends for a long time. They used to share the jamoon fruits of the tree and spend time together everyday. One day the crocodile wanted to take some of the fruits to his wife. The monkey obliged by picking the best fruits on the tree.

The crocodile was a good hearted fellow but his wife was a she-devil. She liked the taste of the sweet fruits so much that now she wanted to taste the monkey-who had been feeding on these fruits all his life!

The wife argued, coaxed and threatened her husband into submission and told him to bring the monkey to their place on some pretext, so that they can eat him up.

On the next day the crocodile invited his friend the monkey to a feast arranged by his wife in his honor. The monkey never doubted the words of his long time friend and readily hopped on his back.

When the crocodile was sure that the monkey was at his mercy and could not escape, he revealed his true plan for the feast. The monkey was trusting his friend out of faith but he was also very cleaver animal.

"I have washed and hung out my stomach for drying . If you had told me then and there, I would a have given it to you happily. If you take me back to my tree, I can hand it over to you in a second."

The foolish crocodile believed the monkey now and took him back to the tree where he lived. The monkey hopped off its back and climbed to the top most branch of the tree.

He asked the crocodile, "Can any animal remove his stomach from his body while he was still alive?
I do not want to be your friend any longer. You are treacherous and not trustworthy. Go back to your water hole"

The crocodile stood speechless and aghast as he had lost a good friend and the life time supply of the sweet jamoon fruits - all in one stroke.

Moral of the story.
Value your friendship more than the vile words of your spouse.

அதிசயமான அக்ஷய பாத்திரம் ஒன்று;

“நீராடி விட்டு வருகின்றோம், நாங்கள்;

பசி தீர்ந்தது, அவன் உண்ட பருக்கையால்;

When Durvaasa maharishi visited along with his 10,000 disciples, Duryodhanan took very good care of them-playing the part of the perfect host.He was secretly afraid that he may incur the wrath and saapam of the short tempered rishi. So when everything went off well, the rishi wanted to bestow upon Dhuryodhanan a special boon.

Any normal person would have have asked for health, wealth, strength, beauty, good health etc but being who he was Dhuryodhanan made a strange request. He wanted to use the boon to get the Pandavaas into trouble with the short tempered rishi.

So he requested that the rishi must visit the Pnandavaas in the forest with all his disciples, when Paandavaas and Paanchaali were resting after their meal. The rishi agreed promptly.

Before the onset of Vanavaasam, Lord Soorya had presented Dharman with an Akshaya paatram. As its name suggested the wonder vessel can produce any amount of any food we desired. But once it was cleaned, it would lose its power for that day. It could produce food only on the next day.

The rishi and disciples visited Paandavaas and told them to keep their food ready and went to take a bath. Paanchlaali was agitated since she had already cleaned the vessel on that day.She prayed to Lord Krishna to help her out of the trouble.

Lord Krishna appeared in front of her and demanded food as He was extremely hungry.Paanchaali was almost in tears- unable to give him food. Krishna took the vessel and found a single grain of cooked rice and a small piece of spinach stuck to the vessel. He scraped them out carefully, put them in his mouth and said,"May the hunger of Sri Hari, the viswaroopan, be appeased"

Krishna was the viswaroopan and so the hunger of every living thing was appeased.

Beema was sent to bring the rishi and his disciple for eating food. But they were feeling so full that they excused themselves and left the place abruptly.

Paandavaas and Paanchaali were amazed at the subtle way Krishna had handled the situation and sent the rishi away without incurring his wrath!

# 40. The common enemy.

A terrific war raged between the animals on one side and the birds on the other! The war was prolonged and the two sides showed signs of winning alternately.

When the birds were nearer to Victory, the bat would join their side claiming that he was a bird too- since he too had wings and he too could fly.

When the animals showed signs of victory, he would hurriedly join them claiming that he to was an animal since he was a mammal and his young ones fed on their mother's milk.

Finally both the parties called off the war on mutual consent. The bat which was changing sides all along and proved to be opportunistic and unreliable became the common enemy of both the birds and the animals.

Moral of the story: It pays to be faithful to your friends and not fickle minded or unreliable.

இடக்கையால் தூக்கி வெளியே எடுத்தான்;

சிறந்த இக்ஷ்வாகு குலத்தின் மன்னன்;

விழுந்தவன் வெகுநாள் காத்திருந்தான்;

பொன் விமானத்தில் ஏறிக் கொண்டான்;

# 142. King Nrugan.

One day, the sons of Krishna Samban, Pradyumnan and others were playing for a long time and became very thirsty. They went to a nearby well, hoping to get a drink of water.

Inside the well there was no water. A large and heavy chameleon was found there. The children tried to take it out of the well, but it was very heavy and unmanageable!

They reported the matter to Krishna. He went to the well and took out the chameleon with his left hand as if it were a toy.The moment Krishna touched it, the chameleon transformed into a young and handsome man-dressed in silk clothes and adorned with various ornaments. He touched Krishna's feet in reverence and related his story.

He was the famous Iskvaaku king named Nrugan.He was famous for his liberal gifts of cows to Brahmans and other charitable services to the citizens of his country.

One day a stray cow got mixed with the herd he had kept aside for gifting.Unknowingly he presented that stray cow to a brahmin.

When the brahmin who received the cow as a gift was leading it away, the real owner came there and demanded him to give it back.

The man who had received it as a gift would not part with it. The king proposed the gift of mare cows and gold coins in compensation for the cow. But neither the owner nor the receiver were willing to come to any kind of compromise!

When the King's end came, Yama Dharman asked the king, "Do you want enjoy the swargam first or suffer the punishment first?" When the king opted for punishment, he was told to "Fall!". He fell down transformed into a great chameleon and waited for deliverance by Krishna's touch.

He begged that his bhakti for Krishna should never diminish. He got into golden chariot and flew off to Heaven.

We may perform an act of kindness with the best of intentions and still end up in a hot spot, due to the circumstances beyond our control.

# 41. A dream come true?

A rich landlord owned several large fertile fields and yet he always coveted for more and more land secretly. He was neither satisfied nor happy in his heart. One night he had a strange dream. He saw a strange man in his dream who promised to gift him large area of fertile land!

Next morning, he met the same strange man in person, near his field. His dream had come true! The man told the landlord, "You may set out at sunrise and all the lands you go round during the day will be yours - provided you come back to the starting point before sunset"

The landlord could hardly believe his eyes or ears. But it was a genuine offer from a king hearted stranger.

The next morning he started dashing like an antelope as the Sun rose in the east. Each piece of land appeared to be more fertile than the previous one. So he kept on running like one truly possessed.

Soon it became a race between the Sun in the sky and the man on the earth! It would be sunset in a few minutes but he would possess all the land he had run around, only if he could reach the starting point before sunset.

He ran straining every muscle in his body. He was out of breath, hungry, thirsty and tired. But the only thought that kept him going was that he should reach the starting point soon.

The sun just disappeared in the west. The man just reached the starting point - only to drop down quite dead!
The stranger was nowhere to be seen.

A man needs one square foot of land to stand upon, two square feet of land to sit upon an six square feet of land of sleep upon.

Why should anyone wish for more than his share of Good Fortune?

Why should he become so greedy that he would rather lose his life than be contented with a little less?

வேறிடம் செல்லார் துறவியர் எவரும்;

அருள்மிகு பிரசாதமாகவே உண்டும்;

பாம்பு ஒன்று தீண்டிக் கொல்லவே;
