A poem a day to keep all agonies away!

# 27. WEALTH AND ITS INFLUENCES.

Is a coin circular in shape so that it can run away from its owner very fast?

Is the money made of paper so that it can fly away form its owner as easily as a paper does? Whether money runs or flies, it is the only thing that adds value to everyone in the whole world.

A person who has money has everything. A person without money has nothing - even if he has all the other virtues. An unworthy man is rendered respectable by his solid bank balance. A worthy person is treated like dirt if he does not have any money.

A rich man never lacks friends or relatives. But everyone deserts a poor man like the rats deserting a falling house.

Money may or may not be the root of all evil in the world, but it certainly is the foundation of all economics. It adds value to the words uttered by a man and makes him very influential . So amassing a great wealth, commanding general respect and having profound influence always go hand in hand.

மங்கிய பார்வை உடைய கிழவனை;

அடி பணிந்தான், ஆசி கோரினான்;

Bharadwaajar and Raibhyar were good friends. But their sons were very different from one another. Raibhyar's two sons Paraavasu and Arvaavasu were well versed vidhvaans in vedams.

Yavagreevan, the son of Bharadwaja was jealous of their accomplishment but wanted to get the knowledge of vedas without studying under a guru.

He did a severe penance and roasted his body in the burning flames, hoping that Indran would take pity on Him and bless him with the knowledge of the Vedas.

One day he saw a very old man throwing handfuls of sand in the river Ganga. When questioned the old man said that he was building a dam across Ganga with the sand.

Yavagreevan asked whether it was humanly possible to do so.The old man replied that if it were possible for person to learn Vedam without the guidance of a Guru, this was also a possible feat.

The old man was none other than Indran in disguise. He blessed Yavagreevan and advised him to approach a Guru to learn vedas.

# 28. AD FADS.

This is the age of advertisements. We need an ad to sell any product. There are three types of lies - the harmless little lie, a hoax and the advertisement!

Do you want to project a grain of sand as a hill or a mole hill as a mountain? An ad can achieve these feats very easily!

If the products are of a good standard, there is no need for any ad. People will come forward and buy them without being enticed and invited.

Does any flower advertise that it has honey? Yet the honey bees make bee-line to them! Does any tree advertise that it has got sweet ripe fruits? Yet the parrots locate them quite well!

No cow advertises about its milk, nor an ox about its leather nor a cotton fruit about its threads! Yet we also go to them for their products.

There is no need for and ad if the product is really good!

“ஆண்டுகள் ஆயிரம் கடந்தவன் நான்;

When the Pandavas and Paanjaali were in the Naaraayana ashramam,an unusual flower with an exotic fragrance came to Paanjaali, carried by the wind. She was fascinated by the shape and smell of the rare flower and bade Bheeman to get her the plant and its flower.

He followed the scent of the flower and reached a field of banana trees. A large glowing monkey was lying there stretched out and blocking the way completely.

When Bheeman told it to move out of his way, it replied saying that it was thousands of years old and could not move any limb of its body.

Bheeman tried to pull aside its tail and move on. But however hard he tried, he could not budge the tail of the monkey even by one inch.

The monkey then revealed is true identity as Hanuman the Vaayu puthran to Bheeman the other Vaayu puthran!

They both embraced. Hanuman gave Bheeman blessings and a promise that whenever Bheeman made a sound in the warfield, Hanuman's voice will add on to it.

Hamuman will be on the flag on Arjuna's chariot and protect him.Beeman got the Sowgandhi flower and plant and went back to Paanjaali.

# 29. DECEIT AND ENDEARMENT.

An old adage says that we should not trust men who cry unnecessarily and women who laugh unnecessarily. Some young girls feign humility and speak in high pitched sweet voices imitating young children.

They do so to spread an invisible net to catch their unsuspecting prey - in the form of innocent and young men. Once caught in their net, the fate of these men will be the same as the insects caught in the spider web.

The bent bow does not show us respect. It is in fact getting ready to shoot out an arrow. In the same way innocent people who get cheated by the external appearances are taken for a ride.

In order to catch a big fish, we have to use a small fish the bait. These scheming girls use their beauty as a bait to lure young men.

Beware of person who is unnaturally humble or sweet or friendly. They feign these qualities to get what they want. Unless we are on guard, we are sure to end up feeling miserable.

# 131. Exception to every rule!

Every rule has an exception-but there is no exception to this rule! Only the exception proves the rule.Who is better qualified to find all the loop holes than the law-maker?

HiranyAkshan and Hiranyan became mad with power and ego and started harassing all the three worlds.Lord NArAyanA took the form of VarAha Moorthy and killed HiranyAkshan.

H
iranyan became both terrified and angry and decided to get the boon of immortality from Brahma.

He did a severe tapas and got completely covered by ant hills! In due course, Brahma appeared before him and the boon Hiranyan asked was very unusual.

He demanded that he should not be killed at night or during the day; neither inside the house nor outside it; neither on the earth nor in the sky, neither by a man nor by an animal; and with a weapon which was neither alive nor dead!

He had sought immortality for all practical purposes! His atrocities increased day by day while his son PrahlAd's Vishnu bakthi also increased day by day.

Finally Lord VishnU decided that the time was ripe to kill Hiranyan-who had become like a mad elephant let loose on a rampage. He chose to become a lion-man who could crack open the elephant's head with a single mighty blow!

He managed to bend every condition and kill Hiranyan.
He chose sandhyA kAlam-which was neither day nor night.

He sat on the door step-which was neither inside the house nor outside. The raised steps were neither earth nor sky!

The narahari was neither a man nor an animal. He used only his nails which are not alive since they do not cause pain when trimmed and which are not dead since they keep growing!

A person may scheme, plot and plan to perfection but God who is more perfect than him, can make it null and void!

# 30. ENTERTAIN GOOD THOUGHTS.

A young man walked a long way and saw an unusual tree at a distance. He was very tired and wanted to rest under it shade.
He sat in it shade, hungry, thirsty and extremely tired!

He wished that he had a soft bed on which he could rest his tired limbs for a while and there appeared a bed made of the finest swan feathers. He lied down on it and wished that some one would massage is tired legs gently. There are appeared several pretty young maidens and started massaging his legs very gently.

He now wished that he had some thing to eat. There appeared several plates with the most fascinating dishes he had ever tasted. He ate to his heart's delight and did not realize even then that he was sitting under the 'kalpaga vruksham' which could give us anything we desire.

Suddenly he thought in fear, "What if a ferocious tiger appears here!"
Immediately a large angry tiger appeared there.

Instead of wishing that it should go away he wondered ,"What if it kills me?" The tiger pounced on him and killed him immediately.

Will anyone in his right sense give up his life under the 'kalpaga vruksham'? He could have asked for anything and git it.
He thought of a tiger and death and got killed by a tiger.

We must always entertain good thoughts, say good words and do good deeds. Then everything happening to us will also be invariably good!

மண்ணை நீரில் குழைப்பதனால்;

காய்ந்தால் மட்டும் போதாது;

பானை செய்யும் களிமண் வேறு;
பானை செய்யும் குயவன் வேறு;

# 132. The Gatam and the God.

We need a gatam, to understand God! What is the connection between a Gatam and God? We will find it out! To make a pot we need clay (Pruthivi) and water(appu).

After shaping the clay paste into a gatam, we set it out to dry in the air (Vayu). Later it is cooked on fire (Agni) to make it stronger and water-proof. Always there is aakaasam inside and outside the gatam.

Similarly God needs these five elements or pancha bootham for creation of the Universe. There are also certain differences despite the similarities!

The clay is different, the pot maker is different and the pot is different. But in the creation of the Universe, God himself is the material (clay), maker of the pot and the pot(creation).

Everything we see, smell, hear, touch and taste are expressions of God himself!

# 31. LAUGHTER AND TEARS.

Animals too are capable of shedding tears! We all have heard about the 'crocodile tears' and witnessed the shedding of tears by cows, calves and elephants.

Laughter is very infectious. Laughter causes more laughter. We can't help laughing when we see someone bursting with laughter! When a person laughs his / her mind blooms, his / her face shines with mirth and he /she becomes vary beautiful to look at.

We can cause laughter - but we should refrain from becoming the cause of laughter - or laughing stocks. It is very easy to laugh but it is very difficult to make people laugh. Any successful comedian will confirm the accuracy of this statement.

When we share laughter and mirth, they get multiplied and magnified. When we share tears and sorrow, they get divided and diminished.

When a baby is born into the world, it cries loudly and all the others beam with joy and laughter. But when a person leaves the world, he /she should be laughing while the others around should shed bitter tears.

Laughter and tears play a very vital role in our everyday life in the forms of happiness and sorrow.

ஒரு பணிப் பெண்ணின் மகன் ஆனான்;

MAndavyar was a sage living in an ashram far from the maddening crowd. His entire life was devoted to penance and spiritual sAdhanA.

On one occasion a gang of thieves hid their loot in the ashram and hid themselves also there. The king's soldiers who had followed them traced them out of the ashram with the hidden loot. When questioned the sage who was in deep meditation did not reply.

The soldiers thought that he was the chief of the thieves pretending to be innocent. They arrested him along with the thieves. The king hastily pronounced that all of them should be impaled.

The sage remained alive even after all the thieves had died, since he was in deep meditation. The king got frightened, rushed to his side, released him and begged for his pardon.

The sage did not hold the king responsible for this act and went straight to Darma Rajan.and demanded,"What have I done to deserve such a punishment?"

The Dharma Devan replied politely, "Sire! when you were a child, you used to pierce beetles and birds with kusa grass. That was the cause of this punishment."

Sage flew into a temper! "Such a severe punishment for a crime I had committed as an innocent and ignorant child?

I curse you to be born on the earth as a sUdrA and live for a hundred years there!"

Dharma Devan was born as Vidhura, the son of a servant maid of AmbalikA. He remembered all the Dharma sAsthrAs and became famous for Vidhura needhi-the Justice of Vidhuran.

# 32. THE GOOD AND THE BAD.

The good and bad coexist in the world just like any other pair of opposites.
One should develop the habit of looking at the good things and good qualities and discarding the bad things and bad qualities.

No one is perfect! Nothing is an unmixed blessing! Hence the discerning power becomes absolutely necessary for everyone of us, to live well in this world.

The sieve separates the wanted from the unwanted but it lets go the useful things and retains the useless things. A winnow also separates the wanted from the unwanted. The difference being that a winnow discards the useless things an retains the useful things.

A swan is credited with the rare ability of separating milk from a mixture of milk and water. We should also develop the power of discerning. We must hold on the good in everything and discard the bad!

வாடிய முகத்துடன், பசியுடனும்;

தானம் என்பது பொருட்கள் அல்ல;

After the MahAbhAratha yudhdham, the PAndavAs performed an aswamEdha yAgam on a lavish scale. Everyone invited for the yAgam was praising it sky high.

They all were startled by the teasing loud laughter of a strange mongoose which was standing in the yAgasAlA.One half of its body was golden and the other normal. The mongoose spoke in a human voice!

"So you are congratulating the PAndavAs for the success of this yAgam. But I can tell you this is nothing in comparison to the dhAnam of one measure of flour given by a brahmin family in KurukshEtrA.

The head of the family was a poor uncha vruththi brahmin who lived with his wife, one son and his daughter in law. They used to pick the fallen grains from the fields, pound them to flour and share it equally for their single meal of the day. If they can't find any thing, they just starve.

One day just as they sat down to share the measure of flour, there came a poor brahmin, hungry and tired. The head of the household offered him his share of the flour.

The guest was still hungry. Thereafter the wife, the son and the daughter in law also offered their shares of the flour.

A miracle happened then! Flowers rained from the sky and a golden vimAnam came down to take the family to Heaven. I rolled on the flour spilled on the ground and one half of my body became golden.

I am visiting every yAgasAlA ever since then, with the hope of making the other half of my body also golden-but in vain. Nothing has equaled the gift of the measure of flour by that family"

The crowd stood aghast. Gift is not a matter of the cost price, it is a matter of the attitude. A piece of charcoal presented with love and kindness is more precious than a diamond given with hatred and grudge.

# 33. THE NECTAR AND THE POISON.

A beautiful piece of art pleases the eyes of the beholder! A known language is sweet to hear. All fragrant products please the nose and all the tasty bites please the tongue. The warm and soft hug of a baby pleases everyone.

Do you know what gives pleasure to all the five senses at the same time?

It is a woman! Her pretty figure and face please the eyes, her cosmetics the nose, her sweet words the ears. Her nearness intoxicates a man by catering to all his five sense organs. She is often a hindrance to the 'spiritual saadhanaa' and disturbs the mind of a normal man.

Why did then God create her... to help a man or to destroy him?

Anything in excess is NOT good for us. Even a deadly poison becomes a rare medicine, when administered in very small quantities. It is only when a man loses his balance and becomes a senseless and spineless slave to a woman, that he gets completely destroyed by her!

A woman is the human representative of the Mahaa Shakti. She must be treated as such. If a man loses everything to a woman and blames her later, he is no better than Kousikan who did the same thing to Menakaa.

The duty of every householder is to take care of the all the people in the other three
stages of life..the children, the elders and the sanyaasis. It is the wife who helps a man to discharge his prescribed duties well. Without her cooperation, man won't be able to achieve anything useful in this world.

Woman is a unique creation of God. Those who know this truth treat her well. Those men who push women into misery and sorrow, are sure to reap the evil consequences of their thoughtless actions.

A woman is not made to be merely an object of enjoyment;
a woman is not made to be merely an object of exhibition;
a woman is not made to be a mere platform to unload all man's worries and duties;
a woman is not made to be merely a shock - absorber of the family.

Everything supreme is pictured and personified as a woman!

The Goddess of wealth, the Goddess of education, the Goddess of valor, all the rivers are all females.

It is never too late to mend one's ways and thoughts. Let everyone take a pledge today that he will honor a woman rightfully and let her live her life peacefully.
