A poem a day to keep all agonies away!

207. A man of justice

One who believes in God and refrains from doing wrong things.
One who does not desire to ravish a young pretty girl who is all alone by herself.

One who would not take possession of the bag of gold seen on a lonely path.
Oe who does not pretend to be noble in order to impress the others around him.

One who follows dharma quietly and inherently for its own sake.
One who does not make vanity, pomp and show his life style.

சாதகன் உலகப் பற்றுக்களில் மிதக்கலாம்;

பற்றுங்கள் இறைவனை ஒரு கரத்தால்;

மனதை நிலை நிறுத்துங்கள் இறைவனிடம்;

அர்ப்பணம் செய்மின் அனைத்துக் கர்மங்களையும்;

208. The Art of right living

Your huge mansions, your movable and immovable properties, your spouse, your children, your wealth and your possessions are ephemeral and transient. The only thing of permanence is your love for God.

So sit in a silent or lonely spot and do spiritual sadhana - with unwavering concentration - as much as is possible. Become indifferent like the snake which will not get distracted even if a frog jumps in front of it .

A boat can lie in water and still float. But if the water gets into the boat, it will sink. In the same way the spiritual sadaka can live in the world and keep himself afloat. The moment he gets immersed in the worldly affairs, he sinks.

We can't leave God since He is our only constant companion. We can't leave the word since we are destined to live in it. So hold on to God with one hand and to the world with the other hand.

Become like the fish which does not get stuck in the muck. Become like the lotus leaf which never gets submerged in water. Set your mind on God and perform your prescribed duties as usual.

The dispassion (aka virakthi) will develop when the power of discretion (aka vivekam) develops and you will know to distinguish the permanent from the transient.

Offer all your actions and their fruits to God. Submit your mind, speech and body to God.

Who is with us always???

A young boy had his the photo of his parents in his purse. When he became an adult it was replaced by the photo of his fiancee. Later it was replaced by the photo of his wife.

The first born is always the Apple of the eye for the parents. So the photo of his wife was replaced with that of his son. Later it was replaced by the photo of his first grandchild. By now, his parents were dead and gone decades ago and his wife had also died.

One fine day, the boy who had now become and old man, wondered," Why everyone I love change with time and leaves me abruptly? Who is the one who has been with me always and will be with me always?"

It dawned on him that it was God and only God who was with him, is with him and will be with him always. Now how replaced the photo in his purse with that of Lord Krishna and felt a peaceful bliss for the first time in his life.

தேவை சாரம் நமது இல்லம் கட்டும் போது ;

விக்ரஹ பூஜை அவசியம் பக்தி பிறப்பதற்கு ;

எழுதுவோம் பெரிய அக்ஷரங்களில் முதலில்;

உருவ ஆராதனை தரும் ஏகாக்கிர சித்தம்;

பெரிய பொருட்களைச் சுடுவோம் பயிலும் போது;

உருவம் நினைவூட்டும் இறையின் தத்துவத்தை;

பசுவின் பால் சுரக்கும் அதன் காம்புகளில் மட்டுமே;

209. Idol worship

Why do we need Idol worship ?

We attach scaffolding to a house when we get it built. After the house is completed, the scaffolding is detached. In the same way Idol worship is very necessary till one has learned to love the truly Formless and Nameless God.

When we learn to write, we at first write in huge letters but once we have mastered the technique we can write even on a grain of rice. Idol worship helps us to focus the wavering mind on the form and name of the chosen Deity. The idol will be the axis around which all our thoughts keep revolving. Once we learn how to focus our thoughts, we do not need an Idol or a Form or a Name.

While learning to shoot, the objects aimed at are are huge and stationary. But as the training advances, the target becomes smaller and smaller and may even move around. Similarly every Idol has a significance and once we have discovered it, we do not need the Idol anymore.

The cow gives its milk only from its udder. The power of the All powerful God can be felt best in the temples when we stand before the Idol. Holy men and good folks flock the temples. So their goodness and merit also makes the temple purer and holier than the outside world.

நாமமும், ரூபமும் ஒன்றே ஆகும் இறைவனுக்கு;

கண்ணனைத் தானம் செய்தாள் சத்தியபாமா;

210. Naamam VS Roopam.

The NAmam ( The Name ) and Roopam ( The Form ) of God are one and the same. In fact His nAmam is said to be superior to His Roopam.

Sathya bhAma wished to own KrishNa all for herself. She came up with a brilliant plan. She would donate KrishNa as a gift to Sage NArada and buy Him back with gold so that KrishNa would always belong to her and only to her.

So accordingly KrishNa was given away to Sage NArada. Sathya bhAma wished to buy KrishNa back by offering gold. KrishNa was seated on one plate of a balance and she kept all the gold she had in the other plate.

All her jewels, vessels, coins and other things made of pure gold were placed in the other side. But lo and behold! The plate on which Krishna was seated did not budge even by an inch.

Sathya bhAma had placed al her riches but could not buyback KrishNa from the Sage NAradA. Rukmini Devi wrote KrishNa's name on a leaf of Tulasi and placed it on the other plate. A miracle happened and now both the plates of the balance were equalised - proving that the name and the form of a God are equal.

Kabhir DAs goes on further and declares that "The Name of Rama is more powerful than His form!"

சித்திகளால் அற்புதங்கள் நிகழ்த்துவர் சிலர்;

உண்டாக்கும் சித்திகள் மேன்மேலும் அகங்காரத்தை;

தவம் செய்தான் ஒருவன் தனி இடத்தில அமர்ந்து;

கூறினான் குருவிடம் இதை மிகப் பெருமையுடன்;

தம்படி கொடுத்தால் ஓட்டிச் செல்வான் ஓடக்காரன்;

வெறுக்க வேண்டும் சித்திகளையும், சக்திகளையும்;

தீவிரப் பக்தி இருந்தது இறைவனுடன் இணைந்திட ;

ரமித்து வந்தான் அவ்வழகிய பெண்ணுடன் ரகசியமாக;

எதையும் தருவான் இறைவன் தன் பக்தருக்கு;

211. The Hindrances created by the SidhDhis.

Some sidhDhas who acquire the rare power of sidhDhi perform many miracles. In that process some of them lose sight of their original goal in life namely Realisation of Self and get lost in their spiritual progress. Often times the presence of SidhDhi in a person negates the ultimate Liberation and merging with God inseparably.

A man performed severe penance and spiritual practices and acquired a sidhDhi by which he could walk on the surface of water. He told his Guru very proudly about his achievement. But hs Guru had other opinions about his success. He took this disciple to task for having wasted his severe tapas in acquiring a sidhDhi which he could have managed equally well just by paying a pittance to the boatman!

One must realise that the sidhDhis do damage rather than help for progressing in the Quest For Self. They divert the concentration and displace the original lofty aim in one's life.

One sidhDha got the power of traveling to wherever he wished to go - unseen by others. Originally his aim was to acquire total liberation. But he fell in love with a young beautiful woman. He could visit her and enjoy with her - unseen by others and unknown to others. He soon forgot his aim in life and became a 'yOga brashtan'.

Tapas can yield anything we ask for! Instead seeking for the supreme self realization, if we seek cheap and showy results we are the real fools. One should seek for Bhakthi, JnAnam, VairAghyam and VivEkam which would speed up the progress made in the spiritual path..

உண்ட உணவின் மணம் கையில் இருக்கும்;

அமர்ந்து இருந்தனர் பல சாதுக்கள் ஓரிடத்தில்;

கண்ணெடுத்தும் பார்க்கவில்லை சாதுக்கள்;

இல்லறம் துய்த்துத் துறவறம் பூண்டவன் அவன்;

வண்டியில் பூட்டப்பட்டிருந்தன இரண்டு காளைகள்;

212. Etchings in one's Memory.

The smell of the food we eat lingers on in our hand. The smell of the flowers women wear lingers on in their hair. The joys and pleasures we enjoy leave a permanent etching in our mind. They are called the "vAsanai" meaning "lingering smell". This poorva vAsnai will remain completely hidden from sight but will emerge when the right opportunity arises.

Many sAdhus were sitting in a place. A beautiful young woman walked by. None of the sAdhus took notice of her - but for one. He admired her with his sidelong glances. He had lived the life of a grahastha ( as a householder) and had a few children born before he became a sanyasi.

Two bulls were drawing a cart. Both of them had been castrated. When they saw a cow, one of the two bulls was aroused. It was because it was castrated after it has united with a cow. The other bull did not get aroused since it was castrated at a very early age.

The mental recordings of all the pleasures we enjoyed will never get erased. They will be waiting eagerly to push us off our spiritual path into the mire of worldly pleasures.

The unseen foe is more dangerous than the foe we can see and be on our guard!

கொண்டது ஒரு கெண்டை மீனை;

பறந்து பறந்து களைத்தது பருந்து;

பற்றிக் கொண்டது மீனை வேறு பறவை;

வந்தார் ஓர் அவதூதர் அந்த வழியே;

வணங்கினார் முதல் பருந்தை அவதூதர்;

"உலக இச்சைகள் பெரும் சுமையாகின்றன;

உணர்த்தினாய் இன்று இதை நீ எனக்கு;

துர்லபம் ஆசைகளை நிறைவேற்றுவது;

அலைகள் ஓய்வதில்லை கடற்பரப்பில்;

213. The Kite and the Saint

A Kite soars very high in air in the sky, but it has to get its food from the earth. Once a kite spotted a very fat fish. It took a deep dive and grabbed the fish in its beak. It wished to settle down with the fish somewhere and eat it at leisure. But the other birds would not let it do so. Thy chased the kite in order to grab the fish from it.

The kite flew or a long time in circles but could not escape from the pestering of the other birds. So finally it dropped the fish wantonly. Another bird caught hold of the fish and now it was being chased by the rest of the bird population. The kite was really tired. So it settled down peacefully - though hungry.

A Saint came that way. He witnessed the whole drama. He paid his respects to the kite and said,
"Our desires become huge burdens on us. As long as the desires exist, troubles will also be there. Only when you give up the desires, you can live in peace. You taught me this lesson today. So you have become my guru."

It is difficult to fulfill our desires. They keep appearing all the time, like the waves on the surface of an ocean. The waves on an ocean never cease. So also the desires in a human mind!

தன் வழியே செல்லும் கண்மூடி போட்ட குதிரை;

சிலந்திக் கடிக்கு மருந்து குழைத்த மஞ்சள்;

திடமான வைராக்கியம் இதற்கு மருந்து;

அடியில் தங்கி விடும் சேறும், அழுக்கும்;

சிறைப்படும் கம்பளிப் பூச்சி தன் கூட்டில்;

வண்ணத்துப் பூச்சி பறக்கும் கூட்டைக் கிழித்து;

214. VairAgyam (Determination)

A horse fitted with blinkers (aka blinders) would not run amuck. In human beings, the vairAgyam acts as the blinker / blinder - preventing him / her from running amuck in his / her life.

We can not write on a paper on which oil has been spilt. But if we dust it with chalk powder we can write on it once again. The oil is the worldly desire and the chalk powder is the Determination.

The medicine for a spider bite is turmeric paste. The three dangerous worldly desires viz for land, for women and for gold can be equated to the bite of the spider. The vairAgyam is the healing turmeric paste.

If the water brought from the river is muddy and dirty, we have to drop a piece of Alum in it. All the mud and dirt get collect at the bottom and we find clean and clear water on the top. The worldly desires are the mud and dirt in the human mind. VairAgyam is the Alum that can make the disturbed mind as clear as crystal once again.

The caterpillar gets arrested in it own cocoon. The Athma gets arrested in the delusion of MAyA. The fully developed butterfly emerges from the cocoon. VivEkam and virAgyam are its two wings. Athma which manages to escape from the delusion can enjoy bliss at the feet of God.

If all the wordy attraction act in one direction (in the exterior world), God will be in the exact opposite direction (in our interior world). If one gives up the worldly desires he can attain God. If he gives in to the worldly desires then God becomes very distant to him.
