KANDA PURAANAM - DAKSHA KAANDAM

21a. நான்முகன் அறிவுரை

“அறிந்து கொண்டாயா அறிவின் பயனை?
அறிவினால் நீ பெற்ற பயன்கள் யாவை?

கூற்றுவன் ஆனாய் உன் சுற்றத்தினருக்கு.
மற்றும் இழந்தாய் உன் முக அழகையும்!

உன் ஏவலர்களை முற்றிலும் இழந்தாய்.
உன் உணர்வுகளை மட்டுமே மதித்தாய்.

ஆன்றோர் வாக்குப்படி நடந்தாலன்றி
அனைத்துக் கேடுகளும் வந்து குவியும்.

செல்வங்கள் தந்த சிவனையும் மறந்தாய்!
பல்லுயிருக்கும் தோன்றும் இம்மயக்கம்.

எனக்கும் வந்தது முன்னர் மயக்கம்.
என் மயக்கத்தைப் போக்கினார் பிரான்.

அன்புடன் சிவனை தொழுபவர்களுகுத்
துன்பம் தொலையும்; இன்பம் சேரும்.

பக்தி செய்பவர்களுக்கு அருள் கூர்ந்து
முக்தி அளிப்பவன் சிவனே அன்றோ?”

6#21a. Brahma’s advice.

Brahma spoke to his son Dahshan,

“Did you understand that little knowledge is a dangerous thing? What is the outcome of your knowledge?
You caused the death of your kin and kith. You lost your head and git it replaced by a goat’s head.

You lost all those who served you. You never respected any one’s opinions and advice. You thought that you knew everything.

Unless you follow the path shown by the wise you will get into all sorts of troubles. Siva showered rare boons on you but you insulted him. Those who worship Siva with sincere love and bhakti will get rid of all their problems and live happily.

Those who are Siva’s true devotees get liberated from the recurring cycle of births and death”

7#14b. அரிச்சந்திரன்


ஓடி வந்தான் இந்திரன் விஸ்வாமித்திரரிடம்,
"வேடிக்கையல்ல இரண்டு சுவர்க்கம் என்பது!

வேண்டுவது என்ன என்று கூறுங்கள்!" என
"வேண்டும் சுவர்க்கம் திரிசங்குவுக்கு!" என்றார்.

தந்தான் இந்திரன் திரிசங்குவுக்கு திவ்வியரூபம்
தந்தான் இந்திரன் திரிசங்குவுக்கு சுவர்க்கபோகம்.

"திரிசங்கு அடைந்தான் சுவர்க்க லோகம்;
அரிச்சந்திதிரன் அடைந்தான் பெரு மகிழ்ச்சி.

உண்டாகவில்லை மகப் பேறு அவனுக்கு - நூறு
பெண்கள் அவனது ராணிகளாக இருந்த போதும்.

அறிவிறுத்தினார் வசிஷ்டர் அரிச்சந்திரனுக்கு
"ஆராதிப்பாய் வருண தேவனை பக்தியுடன்.

கருணை புரிவான் வருண தேவன் உனக்கு;
தருவான் புத்திரப்பேற்றை உறுதியாக!" என,

தவம் செய்தான் கங்கையாற்றின் கரையில்;
தவத்துக்கு மகிழ்ந்தான் வருண தேவன்.

"புத்திரப் பேறு உத்திரவாதம் உனக்கு - உன்
புத்திரனை ஆக்க வேண்டும் யாகப் பசுவாக.

செய்ய வேண்டும் நரமேத யாகத்தை மறவாது,
செய்யவேண்டும் என் மனம் மகிழும்படியாக!"

ஆலோசிக்கவில்லை அரிச்சந்திரன் எதையுமே;
விலக வேண்டும் மலடன் என்ற பட்டப் பெயர்.

வாக்குத் தந்தான் வருண தேவன் கேட்டபடி;
வந்து பிறந்தான் அழகிய மகன் லோகிதாசன்.

தான தருமங்கள் பல செய்தான் அரிச்சந்திரன்;
வானளாவாக உளம் மகிழ்ந்தான் அரிச்சந்திரன்.

7#14b. Harischandra


Indra came running to Sage Viswaamitra. "It is not acceptable to have two separate heavens. Please tell me what you want from me."

Viswaamitra replied, "A place in the heaven for Trisanku!" Indra agreed to this immediately. He gave a divya sareeram to Trisanku and also a place in heaven. Trisanku finally reached heaven as he had wished. Harischandra was very happy to hear that his father had achieved his life's ambition.

King Harischandra had one hundred wives but not a a single child. He desperately wished for a son and consulted sage Vasishta.

Vasishta advised him to pray to Varuna Devan. Accordingly Harischandra did penance towards Varuna Devan on the bank of river Ganga. Varuna was pleased and appeared before Harischandra.

"I shall you a good son but you must offer him to me in a nara medha yaagam without fail. "

Harischandra did not think of the consequences and promised to offer his son as the sacrificial animal in the narameda yaagam.

In due course a son was born to one of his queens. There was great jubilation. Celebrations cheered up the people and they all welcomed the infant prince.

21b. ஆணவம் கொண்டது

"ஆயிரம் நான்கு-ஊழிகள் என் பகல்.
ஆயிரம் நான்கு-ஊழிகள் என் இரவு.

பகல் முடிந்து இரவு உறங்குகையில்
படைத்தவை அனைத்தும் அழியும்.

சனலோகத்தை அடைவர் எஞ்சியவர்;
கனைகடல் பொங்கி அழிக்கும் உலகை!

திருமால் ஈசனின் திருவடிகளைத் துதித்து
உறக்கம் கொள்வார் ஓராலிலை மேல்.

படைப்புத் தொழில் தொடங்கும் போது
படைப்பவன் என ஆணவம் கொண்டு,

திருப்பாற்கடலில் அறிதுயில் கொண்ட
திருமாலின் உறக்கம் கெடுத்தேன் நான்.

“யார் நீர்! அதைக் கூறும்” எனக் கேட்டேன்.

“யான் உன் தந்தையென நீ அறியாயோ?” என,

“யானே பரம்பொருள் என நீ அறியாயோ?” என

“யானே படைத்தேன் உன்னையும், பிறரையும்!” என

“தூணிலிருந்து தோன்றினாய் அன்றொரு நாள்
தூண் உன் தந்தை ஆகிவிடுமா அதனால்?

பாரினில் பத்துப் பிறவிகள் எடுத்தாய்!
பார் படைத்துச் சிவந்த என் கரங்களை!” என

“சிவன் கிள்ளினார் உன் உச்சந்தலையை!
சிறிதும் அதைப் படைக்க முடியவில்லை.

உன்னைப் படைத்த என்னிடமே நாணமின்றி
என்னைப் படைத்ததாகக் கூறுகின்றாய் நீ!”

6#21b. Becoming arrogant.

Brahma spoke to his son Dakshan.

“One thousand Chatur Yugams form one day and one thousand chatur yugams form one night for me. At the end of the day when I sleep the entire creation will perish.

Those who did not get destroyed will reach the Janalokam.The oceans will swell and everything will get submerged under water.

At the end of the night the creation will be resumed. I became arrogant that I was the creator. I went to the ocean of milk and disturbed the sleep of Narayana.

“Who are you? Tell me now!” I demanded him.

“I am your father and your creator” replied He.

“I am the creator and the most supreme God! Don’t you know that ?” I retorted.

“Don’t you know that I created you and the others through you?” He asked.

“You were born out of a stone pillar. Is that pillar your father according to you? You took ten avatars on the earth. I am the one who creates everything. My palms have turned red because of the hard work I do all the time!” I told Him.

Now Naaraayanaa ridiculed Brahma.”Siva took out your topmost head and till now you are unable to replace it. You come to me and boast that you are the creator that you have created me!”

7#15a. புத்திர பாசம்

ஆனந்தம் பொங்கி வழிந்தது அரண்மனையில்;
அந்தணன் வேடத்தில் வந்தான் வருண தேவன்.

"தந்தேன் நீ கேட்டபடி சத்புத்திரனை உனக்கு,
வந்தேன் நீ கூறிய நரமேத யாகத்தைக் காண!"

தயங்கினான் அரிச்சந்திரன் புத்திர பாசத்தால் - மனம்
மயங்கினான் பிறந்த குழந்தையை பலியிடுவதா? என.

"செய்கின்றேன் நரமேத யாகம் நான் கூறியபடி,
சென்று வாருங்கள் இவன் தீட்டுக் கழிந்த பிறகு!"

லோகிதாசன் என்ற அழகிய பெயர் சூட்டினான்;
லோபம் இன்றி வாரி வாரி வழங்கினான் தானம்.

மாத முடிவில் மீண்டும் வந்தான் வருண தேவன்.
"ஏது நீ செய்ய ஒப்புக் கொண்ட நரமேத யாகம்?"

"பல் இல்லாத பசுவை, மகனைப் பலியிடலாகாது!
பல் முளைத்த பின்பு செய்வேன் நரமேத யாகத்தை!"

வந்தான் வருணன் பல் முளைத்த பின் மீண்டும்.
நொந்தான் மனம் மன்னன் வருணனின் வரவால்.

"சௌச கர்மம் செய்யவில்லை இன்னும் மகனுக்கு;
செய்வேன் யாகம் சிகை நீக்கிய பின்னர் " என்றான்.

"சாக்குப் போக்குக் கூறுகின்றாய் அரிச்சந்திரா!
சபித்து விடுவேன் என்னை ஏமாற்ற நினைத்தால்"

"இரு பிறப்பாளர் ஆவர் மூன்று வர்ணத்தவர்;
இரு பிறப்பாளன் ஆவான் உபநயனத்தின் போது.

செய்வேன் உபநயனம் பதினோராவது வயதில்;
செய்வேன் யாகம் பதினோராவது வயதில்!" எனச்

சென்று விட்டான் பேசாமல் வருணன் மீண்டும்;
சிந்தித்தான் மன்னன் அரிச்சந்திரன் இது குறித்து.

7#15a. The love for his son

There was great joy in the palace of Harischandra on the new arrival of the royal son. Varuna came disguised as a brahmin and said to Harischandra," I gave you a good son as you had wished for. Now you must perform the naramedha yaagam which I had wished for. "


Harischandra hesitated wondering how could he bring himself to kill the new born son? He told Varuna, "I have not forgotten my promise. I will perform the yaagaa when the child and his mother becomes purified after the birth. Varuna went back but came back again at the end of that month.


"We are not supposed to offer animals which do not have teeth. Kindly wait till my son gets his first few teeth!" Harischandra bought some more time thus.


Varuna came back after the baby got the first few teeth. Now Harischandra said," We are yet to perform the soucha karmam. Please come after the garbba kesam of the child has been removed."
Varuna smelled trouble and said,"If you are trying to cheat me, I shall curse you Harischandra!"


Next time when Varuna came Harischandra told him, "Three out of the four varnas wear poonool. A brahmin becomes dwija only when the upanayanam is performed. My son will get his poonool in the elevnth year. I shall perform the yaagaa at that time."

21c. சொற் போர்

" உன்னைப் பெற்ற தாய் நானே அன்றோ !
உன்னைப் பெற்ற தந்தை நானே அன்றோ !

உன்னைப் படைத்த தெய்வம் நானே அன்றோ !
உனக்குக் கற்பித்த குருவும் நானே அன்றோ !

உந்தித் தாமரையில் முந்தித் தோன்றியதை
சிந்தையில் நிறுத்த மறந்து விட்டாய் போலும்.

மாயையினால் மதி மயங்கினை மேலும்!
தூய பொன் இன்றி அணிகலன்கள் ஏது?

அரசன் இல்லாமலேயே அரசாட்சி ஏது?
அமையாது எப்பொருளும் நான் இன்றி!

ஆட்டுவிக்கும் இறைவன் நானே அன்றோ?
அணுகுவதற்கு அரிய பரம்பொருள் நானே!

நாராயணனும் நானே! இந்திரனும் நானே!
பரம்பொருள் நானே! பரமசிவனும் நானே!

மறையில் உறையும் மறைபொருள் நானே!”
“உரைத்தது போதும்! போரிடுவோம் வாரும்!”

6#21c. The battle of words.

A battle of words ensued between me (Brahma) and Vishnu.

Vishnu told me, “I am your mother and father. I am your God and Guru.
Have you forgotten that you emerged from my naval? You are also deluded in addition to your forgetfulness.

Can there be any ornament without gold? Can there be a kingdom without a king? Nothing can exist without me. I am the one who makes things happen.

I am the god supreme who is beyond everything and everyone. I am Naaraayana. I am Indra. I am the truth. I am the auspicious Siva. I am the sacred meaning of the Vedas”

I (Brahma) interrupted Vishnu’s long speech and challenged him to fight with me.

7#15b. தலை மறைவு


அணிவித்தான் பூணூல் பதினோராவது வயதில்;
அணி திரண்டனர் வேதியர்கள் உபநயனத்துக்கு.

வந்தான் வருண தேவன் மீண்டும் அவனிடம்,
"தந்துவிடு நரமேத யாகம் நீ கூறியபடி!" என்றான்.

"இருக்கிறது சமாவர்த்தனம் என்ற சடங்கு.
பொறுக்க வேண்டும் நீர் அது முடியும் வரை"

"சாதுர்யமாகப் பேசித் திருப்பி அனுப்புகின்றாய்.
சமாவர்த்தனம் வரையில் பொறுக்கின்றேன்!" என

கண்டான் லோகிதாசன் அன்று நிகழ்ந்தவைகளை;
கண்டான் தன் இருண்ட எதிர்காலத்தை கண்ணெதிரே.

"பலி ஆகிவிடுவேன் இனியும் இங்கு இருந்தால்!"
கிலி பிடித்து ஒடிவிட்டான் ஒரு பெரிய காட்டுக்கு.

பதுங்கி இருந்தான் ஒரு மலைக் குகையில்;
ததும்பியது சோகம் அரிச்சந்திரன் உள்ளத்தில்.

நாலாபுறங்களிலும் தேடினர் வீரர்கள் - ஆனால்
பாலகன் பதுங்கி இருந்த இடம் தெரியவில்லை.

வந்தான் வருணன் வாக்குறுதியை நினைவுறுத்த
"தந்தேன் வாக்குறுதி நரமேத யாகம் செய்திட!

பயந்து ஓடிவிட்டான் என் மகன் லோகிதாசன்!
பயனின்றிப் போயின நான் செய்த செயல்கள்."

எல்லை மீறிவிட்டது வருணனின் கடும் சினம்!
"சொல்லைக் காப்பாற்றாத நீயும் ஒரு மன்னனா?

பலமுறை ஏமாற்றினாய் நீ மீண்டும் மீண்டும்!
ஜலோதரம் பீடிக்கட்டும் உன்னை!" என்று சபித்தான்.

சாபம் தந்த பின் மறைந்தான் வருண தேவன்
சாபம் பீடித்துத் துயர் உற்றான் மன்னன்.

7#15b. The King's Son absconds!

Harischandran performed the upanayanam of his son at the age of eleven. All the brahmins gathered for the ceremony. Varuna also came as a brahmin and reminded the king of the promise made by him long ago.

Harischandra said, "There is just one more ceremony to be performed called Samaavarthanam. Kindly wait till it is over. I will surely offer my son to you in a nara meda yagam after that!"

Varuna said, "Everytime you come up with something and send me back empty handed. I shall wait just one more time. No more waiting after that"

Varuna went back. Lohidaasan had been observing the altercation between Varuna and Harischandra. He was now old enough to understand things and situations.

He knew that if he stayed on there his father will offer him to Varuna in a narameda yaaga. So ran away to a nearby forest without the knowledge of anyone. He hid himself in the cave and lived there in secrecy.

Harischandra became very sad. His spies were unable to locate the prince even after an intense search. Varuna came again and demanded the naramedha yaagam. Harischandra explained to him that his son had disappeared secretly.

Varuna lost his temper and cursed Harischandra,"May you be afflicted with the terrible jalodharam" and walked way in a huff. The curse took effect immediately and Harischandra was in great pain and discomfort.

21d. போர் புரிதல்

“திருமால் எய்த படைக்கலன்களை எல்லாம்
தருப்பையில் உருவாக்கி எய்தேன் நானும்.

சிவப் படைகலத்தினை எய்தார் நாரணன்.
சிவப் படைக்கலத்தினை எய்தேன் நானும்.

இரண்டு படைக்கலன்களும் போர் புரிந்தன!
புரண்டு உலகங்கள் எல்லாம் தாறுமறாயின.

நாரதன் தோன்றினான் எங்கள் முன்னால்!
அறிவுரை கூறினான், ஒரு பயன் இல்லை.

செருக்கு மேலிட்டதால் நாங்கள் இருவரும்
பொருது நின்றோம் பன்னெடுங் காலம்.

தம் திருவருளால் பெருமான் விழைந்தார்
எம் அறியாமையை அகற்றி விடுவதற்கு.

மாசித் திங்கள் பதினான்காம் நாளன்று
மாசில்லாத தீமலை ஒன்று தோன்றியது!

சிவப் படைக்கலன்களை உள்ளடக்கியது.
சிவந்து ஓங்கி ஒளிர்ந்தது வெம்மையுடன்!

“முடி, அடியைக் காணுங்கள்” என்று அசரீரி;
“முதலில் கண்டவரே முழு முதற் கடவுள்!

முடியைத் தேடிச் சென்றேன் நான் மேலே!
அடியைத் தேடிச் சென்றார் திருமால் கீழே!

பறந்தேன் அழகிய அன்னப் பறவையாக!
பன்றியாகி மால் மண்ணைத் தோண்டினார்."

6#21d. The war.

"Vishnu shot his asthrams. I made the same astharams out of kusa grass and shot them at Vishnu. When Vishnu shot the Siva ashtram I too did the same. The two asthrams fought each other terribly. The whole world became upside down!

Narada appeared there. He spoke words of wisdom and tried to make us stop fighting but to no avail. We were both conceited to our eyebrows and went on fighting for a very long time.

Siva wanted to put an end to our war as well our ignorance. On the fourteenth day of the Month of Maasi a huge mountain of fire appeared in front of us. It contained the Siva asthrams and shone with brilliance and heat.

We heard an asareeri telling both of us, “Go and find the top and bottom of this fiery mountain. He who reaches his target first is the God supreme!”

I became a lovely swan and flew upwards searching for the top of the fiery mountain. Vishnu became a boar and went digging down under the soil."

7#16a. நரமேத யாகம்

தலை மறைவாக வாழ்ந்தான் லோகிதாசன்;
நிலை குலைந்தான் அரிச்சந்திரன் நோயினால்.

விரும்பினான் தந்தையிடம் திரும்பிச் செல்வதற்கு;
விடவில்லை அவனை மரண பயம் திரும்பிச் செல்ல.

துணிந்து புறப்பட்டான் லோகிதாசன் ஒருநாள்;
தணிந்து விட்டது அச்சம் ! வந்தான் இந்திரன்!

அந்தணன் உருவில் வந்தான் தேவேந்திரன்;
வந்தவன் கலைத்தான் லோபகிதாசன் மனதை.

"கொழுந்து விட்டெரியும் தீயில் விழுவதற்கா ?
கொல்லப்பட்டு இன்னுயிர் துறப்பதற்காகவா ?

எதற்காகச் செல்ல வேண்டும் உன் தந்தையிடம்?
எதையும் செய்வான் தன்னைக் காத்துக் கொள்ள.

ஆத்மாவின் மேல் அதிகப் பிரியம் ஜீவன்களுக்கு;
ஆத்மாவைக் காக்கத் தியாகம் செய்வர் எதையும்.

செல்லாதே உன் தந்தையிடம் நீ இப்போதே!
செல்லலாம் நாடாளும் சமயம் வந்தவுடன்! "

மனம் மாறிவிட்டான் லோகிதாசன் - இதனால்
வனத்திலேயே தங்கி விட்டான் மேலும் ஓராண்டு.

மீண்டும் நடந்தது இதே போல் ஒரு முறை.
மீண்டும் தங்கி விட்டான் வனத்தில் மகன்.

வருந்தினான் நோயால் அரிச்சந்திரன்;
குருவிடம் கேட்டான் இதற்கு உபாயம்.

'சொந்த மகன் இல்லாததால் - விலைக்கு
வந்த மகனை வைத்து யாகத்தைச் செய் !"

"யாராவது பிள்ளையை விற்பார்களா குருவே?
யாரவது மகனை பலியிட அனுமதிப்பார்களா ?

விலைக்கு வந்தவன் ஆவானா என் பிள்ளை?
தலைக்கு வந்தது தப்பிப் பிழைப்பேனா நான்?"

7#16a. Nara Meda Yaagam

Lohidaasan lived in hiding. Harischandran suffered from the terrible jalodharam. Once Lohidaasan decided to go back to his father. But his fear of imminent death as the sacrificial animal in the nara meda yaagam frightened him and he did not go back to his father.

On fine day he decided to face his destiny and go back to his father. Indra came to him disguised an a brahmin. He spoke to Lohidaasan and said,

"You must be off your mind to go back to your father. He wants to offer you to Varuna in nara meda yaagam. Will anyone jump into a roaring fire willingly? Will anyone wish to lose his life?
Your father will do anything to save himself from his disease. Every living thing cherishes its life force and will do anything to save it and remain alive. Do not go back to your father now. You may go back when it is time for you become the new king!"

The boy decided not to go back. This was repeated one more time after one year. Again Indra managed to convince the boy to stay back in the cave.

Harischandran could bear his disease no more. He approached Vasishta and sought his advice. Vasishta said, "If your own son is not present here you may use a boy bought for money as the substitute for your son and finish the yaaga to get rid of this disease. Ten types of boys are equivalent to own own sons."

Harischandra wondered. "Whosoever will sell his son for money? Whosoever will agree to sacrifice his son in a yagna? Will a boy purchased for money become equal to one's own son? Will I ever be able to perform this yaaga and get rid of my disease and discomfort?"

21e. பெருமான் அருள்

பன்றி வடிவு எடுத்தார் திருமால்;
பல காலம் தோண்டினர் நிலத்தை;

பாதாளம் சென்றும் காணவில்லை
புதிராக நின்ற தீச்சுடரின் அடியை!

பற்கள் நொந்தன, உடல் ஒடுங்கியது,
ஆற்றல் அழிந்தது, தாகம் பெருகியது,

திரும்பியது மீண்டும் தூய அறிவு!
திரும்பினார் மால் சுடருக்கருகில்.

தேடினேன் ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் நான்,
முடியைக் காணவே முடியவில்லை.

உள்ளம் வெதும்பி, உயிர் உலைந்தது,
ஆற்றல் அழிந்து, கண்கள் இழிந்தன!

சிறகுகள் வருந்தின, ஓய்ந்தன கால்கள்,
அறிவு திரும்பியது, ஆணவம் ஒழிந்தது.

திருமால் இருந்த இடத்தை அடைந்தேன்;
தீர்ந்தோம் மனவேறுபாடுகள் இருவரும்!

சிவலிங்கத்தை அமைத்து வழிபட்டோம்.
சிவன் தோன்றினார் திருவருள் புரிந்தார்.

சுடரும் தூய அறிவினை அளித்து விட்டு
சுடரிலேயே மறைந்து விட்டார் மீண்டும்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

6#21e. Siva’s grace.

Vishnu became a boar. He went down further and further. Even after reaching paataalaa he was not able to find the lower end of the fiery mountain.

His tusks had become weak, his body had become tired, his energy was drained and he had become very thirsty. His true knowledge returned and his arrogance and conceit vanished. He returned to the infinite fiery mountain.

I flew upwards for one thousand years. I could not find the top of the fire. I lost my confidence. My life forces shivered. My energy was drained and my eyes became dizzy. My wings became tired and my legs became weak.

My pride vanished. I returned to the place where Vishnu was. We had no difference e of opinion as to who was greater among us. We established a Sivalingam and worshiped it with due reverence.

Siva appeared from the fire and blessed us with true knowledge. He then disappeared in the same fiery mountain.

7#16b. சுனச்சேபன்

"புத்திரர்கள் பத்துவிதம் என்னும் சாஸ்திரம்;
பெற்றால் தான் பிள்ளை என்பதில்லை மன்னா !

புத்திரன் ஆவான் விலைக்கு வாங்கியவனும்;
புத்திரனை விற்பவனைத்தேடிக் கண்டு பிடி.

வறிய அந்தணன் தருவான் தன் பிள்ளையை."
வசிஷ்டர் கூறினார் அரிச்சந்திரனிடம் இதனை.


"பொருளாசை மிகுந்த வறிய அந்தணன்
தருவான் தன் மகனை யாகப் பசுவாக!"

தேடினர் தேசம் எங்கும் அமைச்சர்கள்;
தேடித் பிடித்தனர் வறிய அஜிகர்த்தனை.

இருந்தனர் அவனுக்கு மூன்று பிளைகள்;
இருந்தது அவனிடம் தீராத வறுமையும்.

" தருகின்றோம் நூறு பசுக்களை உமக்கு!
தருவீர் பிள்ளைகளில் ஒருவனை எமக்கு!"

தலை மகன் மீது அதீதப் பிரியம் அவனுக்கு;
இளையவன் மீது அதிகப்பிரியம் மனைவிக்கு!

நடுப் பிள்ளையைக் கொடுத்தான் அஜிகர்த்தன்;
நடுப் பிள்ளளையின் விலை நூறு கறவைப் பசு.

அழைத்துச் சென்றனர் அவனை அரிச்சந்திரனிடம்;
அழும் பிள்ளையைக் கட்டினர் யூப ஸ்தம்பத்தில்.

அஞ்சிய பிள்ளை அழுதான் விம்மி விம்மி!
கெஞ்சினான் தீனக் குரலில் விடுதலை செய்திட.

வீசினான் கொலை வாளைக் கொலை செய்பவன்;
பேசினான் "என்னால் ஆகாது இந்தப் படுகொலை.

வேலையே வேண்டாம் ஆளை விடுங்கள்!" என்று
வெளியேறி விட்டான் யாக சாலையில் இருந்து.

7#16a. Sunahsepha

Sage Vasishta told king Harischandra,"Ten kinds of children are considered equal to one's own children. Do not think that only the son born to you is your son. A boy purchased by you is also your son. Find out a poor brahmin who is willing to sell his son."

Harischandra was convinced that some poor brahmin would be willing to part with his son for a good payment and won't mind the boy being sacrificed in a yaagaa.

The ministers set out and combed the country looking for such a man and his son. They came across a poor brahmin whose name was Ajigarta. He was as greedy as he was poor. He had three sons and was willing to exchange one of them for one hundred milch cows.

Ajikarta was extremely fond of his eldest son and his wife was fond of their youngest son. So the middle son was given away to Harischandra in exchange for one hundred milch cows.

The boy named Sunahsepa was taken to king Harischandra and then tied to the yoopa sthambam in the yaaga salaa. The boy was frightened and cried piteously begging to be released.

The man in charge of killing threw down his weapon and said,"I can't kill this innocent child. I quit my job!" and walked away from the yaaga saalaa.

21f. அண்ணாமலை

“மறைந்தார் சுடருக்குள் சிவபெருமான்,
மண்டியிட்டு வணங்கினோம் நாங்கள்.

சுடர் சுருங்கிச் சிறு மலை ஆகிவிட்டது.
சுருங்கிய மலையை வலம் வந்தோம்.

அறிவு குழம்பித் தெளிந்த பின்னர்
இறைவனை எந்நாளும் மறக்கவில்லை,

அன்று நாங்கள் அடி,முடி தேடிய மலை
இன்றும் உள்ளது அண்ணாமலையாக.

சுடர் வெளிப்பட்ட இரவே சிவராத்திரி!
தொடர்கிறது இன்றும் கிரிவல வழிபாடு.

பெருமான் அருளினைப் பெற்றவர்களே
பெறுவார் அவன் தரும் மெய்யறிவினை.

மெய்யறிவில்லாமல் கற்று ஓதும்
பொய்யறிவினால் பயன் இல்லை.

தீவினைகள் நீங்கப் பெற்றுள்ளாய்
நீயும் எல்லாமாகிய சிவனைத் தொழு!”

நான்முகன் எடுத்து இயம்பினான்
நல்லறிவு மொழிகளை தக்கனுக்கு.

6#21f. Annaamalai.

“Siva disappeared in the column of fire. We prostrated to the column of fire. It shrunk and became a small mountain. We did pradakshinam to the mountain. We had come out of our delusion and never again forgot that Siva is the supreme God.

The mountain still exists as Thiru Annaamalai. The night when the mountain and ther column of fire appeared is the Siva raathri. The Pradakshina of the mountain is done even today.

Only those who are blessed by Siva will gain true knowledge. Reading and chanting does not help to gain true knowledge.

Now you have got rid of all your faults. Do worship Siva with true bhakti”.
Brahma advised his son Dakshan.

7#16c. விஸ்வாமித்திரர்

அழுதனர் அங்கிருந்த அத்தனை பேர்களும்;
அழுகை ஒலி கேட்டு வருந்தினான் மன்னன்!

விந்தையாகக் கூறினான் அரிச்சந்திரனிடம்
தந்தை அஜீகர்த்தன் விநோத மொழிகளை.

"விரும்புகின்றேன் என் வறுமை நீங்கிவிட;
விரும்பவில்லை என் மகன் சுனச்சேபனை;

தாருங்கள் இன்னமும் நூறு கறவைப் பசுக்கள்;
கூறுங்கள் இவனை எங்கனம் பலியிட வேண்டும்?"

ஒப்புக் கொண்டான் அரிச்சந்திரன் இதற்கும்!
தப்பான தந்தை கொல்லத் துணிந்தான் மகனை.

திகைத்தனர் இதைக் கண்ட அத்தனைப்பேரும்!
புகைச்சலுடன் கேட்டனர் "இவன் ஒரு மனிதனா?"

வந்தார் விஸ்வாமித்திரர் யாக சாலைக்கு;
தந்தார் உறுதி மொழி அரிச்சந்திரனுக்கு!

"யாகம் பூர்த்தியாகும் சிறுவனை விடுவித்தால்.
ரோகம் குணமாகும் சிறுவனை விடுவித்தால்!

கொலையை விடக் கொடிய பாவம் ஒன்றில்லை;
கொல்லாமையை விடச் சிறந்த நோன்பு இல்லை.

தன்னுயிர் காத்திட மன்னுயிர் கொல்லலாமா?
மன்னுயிர் துன்புற்றால் மகேசன் துன்புறுவான்!

ஆண்டவனை அடைய விரும்புவர்கள் - பேண
வேண்டும் அனைவரையும் தன்னைப்போலவே!

புத்திர காமேஷ்டி யாகம் செய்வார் பலர் - ஆனால்
புத்திரனையே யாகம் செய்பவன் இவன் ஒருவனே!"

7#16c. Viswaamitra

Everyone present in the yaaga saalaa shed tears of sympathy. King Harischandra was disturbed by this wide scale display of public disapproval.

Ajigarta told the king, "I myself will kill my son for another one hundred milch cows. Tell me how you want it to be done!"

King Harischandra agreed to this and the people gathered there went into shock to see such a cruel father!
They were murmuring and wondering what kind of a man was Ajikarta or whether he was really a man and not a demon.

Sage Viswaamitraa entered the Yaaga saalaa. He told Harischandra, "Release this unfortunate boy. Your yaagam will be completed and your rogam will also disappear.

There is no greater sin than the murder of innocent people. There is no greater nonbu than ahimsa. No one is permitted to kill another jeeva just to save one's own life. If we trouble our fellow humans we are troubling the god residing in them.

There are many people who have performed putra kaameshti yaaga but this man is the only one who is ready to perform a yaagaa with his own putran."
