KANDA PURAANAM - DAKSHA KAANDAM

3d. தக்கனின் பெண்கள்.

நீண்ட காலம் கடந்து சென்ற பின்னும்
மீண்டு வரவில்லை ஆயிரம் மகன்கள்.

அறிவுக் கண்ணால் ஆராய்ந்தான் தக்கன்,
பிறந்தது கடும் சினம் மீண்டும் மனத்தில்.

உள்ளம் வருந்தியது; உயிர் பதைத்தது;
உடல் வியர்த்தது; துன்பம் மிகுந்தது;

ஒன்பது கோள்களும் அஞ்சி ஓடின;
மண்ணுலகம் எல்லாம் மனம் இரங்கியது.

“பிரித்தான் என் மக்களை என்னிடமிருந்து!
திரியவேண்டும் நாரதன் நாடோடியாக!

ஆண் மக்களைப் பெற்று ஏமாற மாட்டேன்
பெண் மக்களையே பெறுவேன் நான் இனி.”

உறுதி பூண்ட தக்கன் பெற்றான்
இருபது மூன்று பெண்களை மீண்டும்

பதின்மரை முனிவருக்கு அளித்தான்
பதின்மூவரை தருமனுக்கு அளித்தான்.

6#3d. Dakshan’s Daughters.

The thousand sons who went to Maanasarovar did not come back. Dakshan learned from his gnaana dhrushti the chain of events. He became very angry and sad. His heart fluttered.

His life force wavered. His body poured sweat and he suffered from grief. The nine planets got frightened by the intensity of his feelings. The earth pitied the almighty Dakshan.

“Narada has done it again! He separated my sons from me for the second time. May he roam around in the the world as a nomad! I will not beget any more sons and get separated from them. I will beget only daughters in future.”

He got twenty three daughters. Of these thirteen were given in marriage to Dharma and ten to the rushis.

19b. மாலை மாற்று

கருடனிலிருந்து இறங்கினான் ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்;
கறுத்த மேனியில் ரத்தின மாலைகள் புரள.

அணிவித்தாள் மலர்மாலையைப் பத்மாவதி.
அணிவித்தான் மலர்மாலையை ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்.

பத்மாவதியின் கரம் பற்றி ரதம் ஏறியதும்
கூத்தாடினார் ஆனந்தத்தில் அனைவரும்.

வைகுந்தமாக மாறி இருந்தது நாராயணபுரம்.
வெகு நேர்த்தியான வளைவுகள், பந்தல்கள் !

வண்ணக் கோலங்களுடன், பூரண கும்பங்கள்;
பெண்கள் எடுத்தனர் ஆரத்தி வழி நெடுகிலும்!

நின்றான் மலர்த் தட்டுடன் ஆகாச ராஜன்;
நின்றாள் தீர்த்தக் குடத்துடன் தரணி தேவி.

வசுதானா என்னும் பட்டத்து இளவரசன்
வாசனை வீசும் சந்தனத்துடன் நின்றான்.

ஆகாச ராஜன் செய்தான் பாத பூஜை – பின்
அழைத்துச் சென்றான் தன் அரண்மனைக்கு.

கூடாரம் அமைத்திருந்தனர் தங்குவதற்கு,
கூட வந்தவர்களுக்குத் தனித் தனியாக!

நகரம் ஜொலித்தது ஜகஜ் ஜோதியாக!
பகலா? இரவா? பேதம் தெரியவில்லை.

ஆகாரம் வந்தது தங்கியிருந்த இடத்துக்கு
ஆகாச ராஜன் உயர்வாக உபசரித்தான்.

மற்றவர் உண்டனர் அரண்மனை முற்றத்தில்
குற்றம் சொல்லமுடியாத இனிய உபசரிப்பு..

இரவில் நடந்தது அப்சரசுகளின் நாட்டியம்;
இதுவரை கண்டதில்லை மனிதர் எவருமே!

உறங்கவில்லை எவருமே அன்று இரவு;
உற்சாகமாகக் காத்திருந்தனர் விடியலுக்கு.

19b. Exchanging garlands

Srinivaasan got down from his Garudan. The gem studded ornaments shone on his dark colored skin. Padmaavati garlanded him and he garlanded her. When he took hold of her hand and got onto the chariot , there was a huge joyous shout.

The city was transformed to resemble Vaikuntham with beautiful structures and pandals. The streets were decorated with colorful floral designs and poorna kumbhams were offered everywhere. Young women did haarathi all along the way.

Aakaas Raajan stood in readiness with a tray full of flowers and Dharani Devi stood with a vessel of water. Prince Vasudaana – Padmaavati’s younger brother stood with a bowl of sandal paste.

The king did paada pooja for Srinivaasan and took him to his palace. Tents were erected for the comfortable stay of the guests. The city shone so brilliantly that no one was sure whether it was day or night!

Food was brought to the tents. The others ate in the palace courtyard. No one could in point any defect in the hospitality.

In the night the apsaras danced. No human being had witnessed it earlier. No one slept that night. They were eagerly waiting for the dawn of the day.

6#12d. அரிச்சந்திரன் (2)

“வஞ்சித்து விட்டாய் பொய்களைக் கூறி – மனிதன்
அஞ்சும் ஜலோதரம் பீடிக்கட்டும் மன்னா உன்னை!”

சாபமிட்டான் அரிச்சந்திரனை வருண தேவன்;
கோபத்துடன் திரும்பிச் சென்றான் தன்னுலகம்.

பீடித்தது அக் கொடிய வியாதி அரிச்சந்திரனை;
துடித்தான் வியாதி தந்த வேதனையால் மன்னன்.

எட்டியது அச் செய்தி மகன் லோகிதாசனுக்கு;
கிட்ட வரவில்லை அவன் இதைக் கேட்ட பிறகும்.

வழிப் போக்கன் ஒருவன் கூறினான் அறிவுரைகளை;
“பழி பாவம் சேரும் தந்தையைத் தவிக்க விட்டால்!”

மன்னனிடம் செல்ல எண்ணினான் லோகிதாசன்;
சொன்னான் அந்தண வடிவில் வந்த இந்திரன்;

“அறிவிலியாகி விட்டாயா அரிச்சந்திரன் மகனே?
தெரியவில்லையா உன் கதி என்னவாகும் என்று?

துன்பத்தில் துடிக்கும் உன் தந்தையிடம் சென்றால்
துன்பம் தருவான் அவன் உன்னை யாகப் பசுவாகி!

என்ன லாபம் உன் தந்தையிடம் செல்வதால்?
உன்னால் தீர்ந்துவிடுமா அவன் துயரம்?” எனச்

செல்ல நினைத்த லோகிதாசனைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்திச்
செல்ல விடாமல் செய்தான் அந்தணனான இந்திரன்.

6#12d. Harischandran (2)

Varuna flew into a bad temper and cursed King Harischandra harshly.” May the terrible disease of Jalodaram afflict you!” and went back to his abode.

Immediately Harischandra was afflicted by Jalodaram and suffered intensely. The news about this reached Lohidaasan. He decided not to go back to his father even after hearing this news.

One day a travellor advised him about his duties as a son and Lohidaasan decided to visit his father and help him out. Indra came there disguised as a brahmin and told Lohidaasan,

“You must off your mind to go back to your father. He is determined to offer you to Varuna in a Narameda yaagam. You may want to free him from his sufferings but he may wish to offer you in the Narameda yaagam and kill you.”

Indra confused the mind of Lohidaasan and he decided not to go back to his father.

4a. திங்களின் சாபம்.

பெண்கள் இருபத்து எழுவர் பிறந்தனர்.
பெண்களைத் திங்களுக்கு மணமுடித்தான்.

“சமமாக அன்பு செலுத்து இவர்களிடம்;
சரியாக நடந்து கொள்ளு இவர்களிடம்!”

தன் இருப்பிடத்தை அடைந்தான் திங்கள்;
தன் மனைவியரிடம் அன்பு பாராட்டினான்;

அழகிற் சிறந்த கார்த்திகை, ரோகிணியிடம்
அளவுகடந்த அன்பு செலுத்தினான் திங்கள்.

காலப் போக்கில் பிறரை வெறுத்தான்;
காதல் அன்பைத் தரவும் மறுத்தான்.

வருந்திய பெண்கள் சினம் அடைந்தனர்
அருமைத் தந்தையிடம் விண்ணப்பித்தனர்.

தக்கனும் சினந்தான் மருமகனிடம்;
தக்க சாபம் அளித்தான் திங்களுக்கு.

“கலைகள் யாவும் தேய்ந்து குறைந்து
நிலை தடுமாறவேண்டும் நீ இனிமேல்!”

திங்களின் கலைகள் குறையலாயின;
திங்கள் தினமும் நலிந்து மெலிந்தான்!

ஒரு கலை மறைந்தது தினம்தோறும்.
ஒரு கலை மட்டுமே மிஞ்சி இருந்தது.

நாணம் கொண்டான் செய்வதறியாமல்.
நாடினான் உதவிக்கு அமரர்கோனிடம்.

6#4a. Curse on the Moon.

Dakshan got twenty seven daughters more. He married all of them to the God of Moon. He told his son in law, “Love all my daughters equally. Treat them all well!”

The God of moon loved all his wives, but as days rolled on he became more attached to Kaarthigai and Rohini and neglected the other wives. The twenty five daughters complained to their father Dakshan about the indifference towards them.

Dakshan cursed the God of Moon,”May you reduce in your beauty and strength everyday!” The full moon has sixteen “kalai”. The moon started losing “a kalai” of his beauty everyday.

Soon only one was left. The next day he would become invisible. He did not know what to do and went to Indra seeking advice.

20a. திருமணம்

நீராடிப் புத்தாடை அணிந்தனர் விடியற்காலை;
நடக்க விருந்த திருமணத்தால் மிக உற்சாகம்.

கண்ணைப் பறிக்கும் ஜரிகைப் பீதாம்பரத்தைப்
பெண்ணைப் பெற்ற மன்னன் அனுப்பினான்.

ஆபரணங்களை அணிவித்தனர் லக்ஷ்மி, உமை!
ஆணழகன் ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் ஆனார் மணமகனாக!

வாசனைத் திரவிய நீரில் குளிக்க வைத்தபின்
வாரி ஜடை போட்டனர் பத்மாவதி தேவிக்கு.

வைத்திருந்த புஷ்பங்களின் பாரத்தினால்
வைத்திருந்தாள் தன் தலையைத் தாழ்த்தி!

தான் தன் மணநாளன்று அணிந்தவற்றை
தன் மகளுக்கு அணிவித்தாள் தாரணி தேவி.

நெருங்கி விட்டது சுப முஹூர்த்த வேளை;
நெருங்கினர் மணமண்டபத்தை அனைவரும்.

இந்திரன் வெண்கொற்றக் குடை தாங்க,
அந்த நிழலில் நடந்தான் ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்.

அளித்தான் தொண்டைமான் மலர்மாலை;
அணிவித்தாள் ஸ்ரீநிவாசனுக்குப் பத்மாவதி.

ஊஞ்சல் பாடினர் வாணியும், லக்ஷ்மியும்;
ஊஞ்சல் ஆடினர் ஒய்யாரமாக மணமக்கள்.

திருஷ்டி கழித்தபின் சென்றனர் மண்டபம்,
திருஷ்டி படும் மணமக்களைக் கண்டால்!

வைதீகக் காரியங்கள் செய்தார் வசிஷ்டர்
வேத கோஷம் முழங்க மாங்கல்ய தாரணம்!

அன்னையர் இருவரும் தழுவி மகிழ்ந்தனர்;
ஆனந்த வெள்ளத்தில் மன்னன் ஆகாசராஜன்

வரிசைகள் வந்து சேர்ந்தன கூடாரத்துக்கு;
பரிசுகள் வழங்கினர் விருந்தினர்களுக்கு.

20a. The wedding

In the early morning next day everyone had a refreshing bath and wore new clothes. The king has sent a yellow silk with heavy brocade work for the groom. Srinivaasan wore it after his ceremonial bath. Lakshmi Devi and Parvati Devi adorned him with ornaments.

Padmaavati was made to bathe in the scented water and decorate as the bride. DharaNi Devi made her wear every ornament she had worn on her wedding day.

The auspicious muhoortham was nearing. Everyone walked towards the wedding mandapam. Indra held the white silk umbrella and Srinivaasan walked under its shade.

ThoNdaimaan gave a garland to Padmaavati and she garlanded Srinivaasan. Siva gave a garland which Srinivaasan put around Padmaavati’s neck.

Lakshmi and Saraswati sang the oonjal songs. Padmaavati and Srinivaasan were gently swaying on the swing. Elderly ladies did the druhshti parihaaram and they all went to the mandapam.

Sage Vasishta conducted the wedding ceremony and at the appointed hour Srinivaasan tied the maangalyam to Padmaavati. Both the mothers embraced each other and the king was overwhelmed with joy.

The wedding gifts were brought to the tent. All the guests were presented with many gifts.

6#13a. அரிச்சந்திரனின் யாகம் (1)

“பின் "விளைவுகளைச் சிந்தியாமல் உன் தந்தை
விளம்பினான் ஒரு நரமேத யாகம் செய்வதாக!”

மாற்றிவிட்டான் லோகிதாசன் மனத்தை இந்திரன்
மறைந்து வாழ்ந்தான் அவனும் மாயை வயப் பட்டு.

சிந்தித்தான் வியாதி மாறுவது பற்றி அரிச்சந்திரன்.
சிந்தித்தான் தன் குலகுரு வசிஷ்டரை அரிச்சந்திரன்.

உபாயம் கூறினார் குலகுரு வசிஷ்டர் வந்துள்ள
அபாயம் நீங்குவதற்கு மன்னன் அரிச்சந்திரனுக்கு.

“புத்திரர்கள் ஆவார் பதின்மூன்று வகையினர்.
புத்திரன் ஆவான் விலைக்கு வாங்கியவனும்!

விலைக்கு வாங்கிவிடு பிராமணப் பிள்ளையை;
நிலைமையை சமாளிப்போம் யாகப் பசுவாக்கி.

பூர்த்தியாகிவிடும் நீ செய்த அந்த சங்கற்பமும்;
தீர்ந்துவிடும் உன் கொடிய வியாதியும்!” என்றார்

“விலைக்கு வாங்கும் அமைச்சரே ஒரு பிள்ளையை!
விலைக்குப் பிள்ளையை விற்கும் பெற்றோர் இருப்பார்.

அறிவியுங்கள் நாடு முழுவதும் இந்தச் செய்தியை
வறியவர் எவரேனும் விலைக்குத் தருவர்” என்றான்.

அமைச்சர் சென்றார் ஊர் ஊராகச் சுற்றி அலைந்து;
அமைச்சர் கண்டார் வறிய அந்தணன் அஜீகர்த்தனை.

இருந்தனர் அவனுக்கு மூன்று மகன்கள் – அத்துடன்
இருந்தன அளவற்ற வறுமையும், பொருளாசையும்.

முதல் பிள்ளையைத் தர விரும்பவில்லை தாயார்;
கடைப் பிள்ளையைத் தரவிரும்பவில்லை தந்தை.

நடுப் பிள்ளைத் தந்தனர் விலைக்கு அமைச்சருக்கு.
நடுப் பிள்ளையின் பெயர் சுனஸ்சேபன் என்பதாகும்.

6#13a. Narameda yaagam

Indra confused the mind of Lohidaasan further,”Your father King Harischandra promised to Varuna to offer you in a Narameda yaaga without thinking of the consequences. It was very wrong on his part to do so!” Indra changed the mind of Lohidaasan and the boy continued to live in seclusion.

King Harischandra wanted to get rid of the terrible jalodaram afflicting him. ‘May be my kulaguru Vasishta could help me to get out of that mess.’

Sage Vasishta came up with a master plan. “Thirteen categories of boys are as good as one’s own son for all practical purposes. A boy bought for money ia also a son. Try to buy a brahmin boy.

Some poor parent may be willing to sell one for a good sum of money. Perform the Narameda yaagam with that boy and your promise will be fulfilled and you will be rid of this disease”

A minister was sent with a fat sum of money to buy a brahmin boy for the yaagam. Ajeekartan was a poor brahmin with three sons. He was utterly poor and utterly greedy as well. He was wiling to sell one of his sons in exchange for a fat purse.

But the mother would not part with her eldest son and Ajeekartan would not part with his youngest son. So they willingly gave away the middle son named Sunascheban.

4c. சந்திரனும், பிரமனும்.

சத்திய லோகத்தைச் சென்றடைந்தான்
சந்திரன் இந்திரன் கூறிய வண்ணம்.

நான்முகனை வணங்கிக் கூறினான்,
நாணத்துடன் தான் பெற்ற சாபத்தை!

“தக்கனிடம் கூறி சாபத்தை விலக்குவீர்!”
மிக்க பணிவோடு விண்ணப்பம் செய்தான்.

“எடுத்துச் சொன்னாலும் கேளான் தக்கன்” என
மறுத்துவிட்டான் வேண்டுகோளை நான்முகன்.

“அன்பர் துயர் தீர்ப்பவன் என்றும் நம்முடைய
அன்பருக்கு அன்பன் சிவபெருமான் அன்றோ?

காலனை உதைத்துச் சிறுவனைக் காத்தது
நீலகண்டன் என்பதை அறியாயோ நீ?

விடை ஏறும் பிரான் இருப்பதே தன்
அடியாருக்கு அருள் புரிவதற்கே ஆம்.

சிவன் திருவடிகளைச் சரண் புகுவாய்.
அவன் திருவருளால் சாபம் ஒழிப்பாய்!”

சந்திரன் அடைந்தான் கயிலை மலையை.
நந்தி தேவரிடம் சென்று விண்ணப்பித்தான்.

சிவன் தாள் பணிந்து அருள் வேண்டினான்.
சிவன் மனம் இளகியது; அருள் பெருகியது;

எஞ்சிய ஒரு கலையை அணிந்தார் சடையில்.
அஞ்சி விலகியது தக்கனின் இட்ட சாபம்!

“செஞ்சடை சேர்ந்த கலைக்கு அழிவில்லை.
அஞ்சாதே இனி அழிவில்லை உனக்கு!

பழைய கலைகள் வளர்ந்து பின் தேயும்
பதினைந்து நாட்களில் ஒரு கிரமப்படி!”

விண்ணில் மீண்டும் இயங்கினான் சந்திரன்
தன் கலைகள் வளர்ந்து, தேயும் வண்ணம்.

6#4c. Chandran and Brahman.

Chandran went to Sathyalokam straightaway. He worshiped Brahma and requested him to speak to his son Dakshan and remove the curse put by him.

Brahma refused and said, “It will be useless talking to Dakshan. He would never remove his curse. Instead of it, you can approach Lord Siva and beg for his grace.

He is ever ready to protect and save his devotees. You surely know how he protected the boy Maarkkandeyan from the clutches of Yama. Surely Siva will save you from you curse!”

Chandran went straight to Kailash. He put his request to Nandhi Devan. He met Siva and explained the critical situation he was in!

Siva took pity on him. He immediately wore the single kalai of Chandran on his matted hair. Dakshan’s curse was removed by Siva’s grace.

“Do not worry Chandra! You are free from the curse now. I can restore your glory this way. Your sixteen kalais will be getting added one by one and later get reduced one by one everyday.”

Chandra was happy that he was saved at the nick of the moment. He started traveling in the sky as before. The waxing and waning affects his beauty and size but he would never disappear completely!

20b. பிரியாவிடை

நடந்தது திருமணம் நான்கு நாட்களுக்கு;.
முடிந்ததும் திரும்பவேண்டும் தம் இல்லம்.

விடை பெற்றனர் மணமக்கள் எல்லோரிடமும்;
மடை திறந்து பாய்ந்தது அரசியின் கண்ணீர்.

வகுள மாலிகை தேற்றினாள் தாரணி தேவியை,
“வெகு தூரம் செல்லப் போவதில்லையே” என்று.

“எப்படியும் கணவன் வீடு செல்ல வேண்டியவள்!
எப்போது வேண்டுமானாலும் காண முடியுமே!”

கணவன் வீட்டில் நடந்துகொள்ள வேண்டிய
கண்ணியத்தை எடுத்துரைத்தாள் அன்னை.

ஆகாச ராஜன் தன் மனம் திறந்து பேசினான்
பூலோக நாதன் மருமகன் ஸ்ரீனிவாசனிடம்.

“செல்லமாக வளர்ந்துவிட்டாள் பத்மாவதி
சொல்ல முடியாது பொறுப்பு உள்ளதாக.

தெரியாமல் அவள் தவறு செய்துவிட்டால்
பெரிய மனதுடன் மன்னிக்க வேண்டும் .

அம்மையாரிடம் நான் சொன்னதும் இதுவே
தம்பதிகள் இனிதே வாழவேண்டும்!” என்றான்

வரிசைகள் வந்து இறங்கின வரிசையாக.
“வரம் தருவேன் கேளுங்கள்” என்றான்

“ஒன்று தான் வரம் வேண்டும் எமக்கு;
என்றுமே உம்மை மறவாது இருப்பது."

“மறக்கவே மாட்டீர்கள் என்னை எவருமே!
சிறப்பாகக் குடி இருப்பேன் உம் சிந்தையில்!”

சேஷாசலம் சென்றனர் மணமகன் குழுவினர்
ஆகாச ராஜனும், தரணியும் உடன் சென்றனர்.

20b. The send off.

 The wedding celebrations went on for four days. After that they had to return to their place of residence. The newly wedded couple took leave of everyone.

Queen could not control her tears at the thought of separation form her dear daughter. VaguLa Maalikai consoled her saying, “Any girl will have to go to her husband’s home after getting married. After all we live close by and we can meet as often as we want to”

The queen told Padmaavati how to behave responsibly in her in law’s home. The king spoke to Sinivaasan with frankness. He told his son in law,

“Princess Padmaavati has been pampered by us. I can’t assure that she will behave responsibly in your home If he does anything wrong please forgive her. I want you to live happily with her”

Srinivaasan wanted to grant him a boon but the only boon the king wanted was this,”may we never forget you. Grant this boon to me and my citizens”

Srinivaasan assured him, “I will live in your mind always and no one can forget me. ” The group accompanying the couple left for Seshaachalam. The king and Queen accompanied them.

நரமேத யாகத்தைத் தொடங்கினான் அரிச்சந்திரன்;
வருகை தந்தார் யாக சாலைக்கு விஸ்வாமித்திரர்.

கண்டார் யூப ஸ்தம்பத்தில் சுனஸ்சேபனை பசுவாக;
கொண்டார் அளவிறந்த இரக்கம் அச் சிறுவன் மீது.

“கொல்லாதே அரிச்சந்திரா இச்சிறு குழந்தையை!
நல்லது நடக்கும் இவனை விடுதலை செய்தால்!

மக்களைக் காப்பதே மன்னனின் கடமை;
மக்களை மாய்ப்பது அல்ல என்றறிவாய்.

பாவத்தால் வந்த வியாதி தீர்ந்து விடுமா
பாவத்தை மேலும் மேலும் நீ செய்வதால்?

தேஹத்தின் மீது ஆசை கொண்டாய் மன்னா நீ.
தேஹத்தின் மீது ஆசை கொண்டான் இவனும்!”

கருத்தில் கொள்ளவில்லை அரிச்சந்திரன்
உருக்கமாக முனிவர் கூறிய அறிவுரைகளை.

சிறுவனிடம் சென்றார் விஸ்வாமித்திர முனிவர்;
“பெறுவாய் விடுதலை இதை உச்சரித்தால்!” என்று

உபதேசித்தார் வருணனின் மந்திரத்தை அவனுக்கு;
உச்சரித்தான் உரத்த குரலில் சிறுவன் சுனஸ்சேபன்.

அழுதான், தொழுதான் அவன் வருண தேவனை!
அழுத குரல் கரைத்து விடும் எவர் மனத்தையும்!

விரைந்து வந்தான் வருணதேவன் யாக சாலைக்கு;
விடுவித்தான் சுனஸ்சேபனை ஸ்தம்பத்திலிருந்து.

நீக்கிவிட்டான் அரிச்சந்திரனின் ஜலோதர நோயை;
நீங்கிச் சென்று விட்டான் தனது இருப்பிடத்துக்கு.

6#13b. Narameda yaagam (2)

King Harischandra commenced the Narameda yaagam. Suddenly Sage Viswaamitra visited the yaaga saalaa. He was shocked to see the young boy Sunascheban tied to the yoopa sthambam in the place of the sacrificial animal. He was moved with sympathy towards that child.

He spoke to King Harischandran, “Release this child immediately. All will be well with you. As a king your duty is to protect your citizens and not sacrifice them in this manner.

Your disease incurred by committing a sin will not be cured by committing more and more sins. You want to save your life and live longer. In the same manner this boy also wants to save his life and live longer.”

But King Harischandra would not listen to the good advice given by the sage Viswaamitra.

Now the sage walked to the boy and told him,”I will teach you Varuna japa mantra. Keep chanting it as loudly and clearly as you can, my child!”

He taught the boy the Varuna mantra. The boy was in tears but he chanted the Varuna mantra midst his tears and sobs. The scene was so pathetic that the heart of every onlooker was melted by it.

Varuna appeared in the Yaga saalaa. He untied and freed the boy from the sthambam. He also cured the disease Jalodaram of the king Harischandra and vanished from there.
 
4a. திங்களின் சாபம்.

பெண்கள் இருபத்து எழுவர் பிறந்தனர்.
பெண்களைத் திங்களுக்கு மணமுடித்தான்.

“சமமாக அன்பு செலுத்து இவர்களிடம்;
சரியாக நடந்து கொள்ளு இவர்களிடம்!”

தன் இருப்பிடத்தை அடைந்தான் திங்கள்;
தன் மனைவியரிடம் அன்பு பாராட்டினான்;

அழகிற் சிறந்த கார்த்திகை, ரோகிணியிடம்
அளவுகடந்த அன்பு செலுத்தினான் திங்கள்.

காலப் போக்கில் பிறரை வெறுத்தான்;
காதல் அன்பைத் தரவும் மறுத்தான்.

வருந்திய பெண்கள் சினம் அடைந்தனர்
அருமைத் தந்தையிடம் விண்ணப்பித்தனர்.

தக்கனும் சினந்தான் மருமகனிடம்;
தக்க சாபம் அளித்தான் திங்களுக்கு.

“கலைகள் யாவும் தேய்ந்து குறைந்து
நிலை தடுமாறவேண்டும் நீ இனிமேல்!”

திங்களின் கலைகள் குறையலாயின;
திங்கள் தினமும் நலிந்து மெலிந்தான்!

ஒரு கலை மறைந்தது தினம்தோறும்.
ஒரு கலை மட்டுமே மிஞ்சி இருந்தது.

நாணம் கொண்டான் செய்வதறியாமல்.
நாடினான் உதவிக்கு அமரர்கோனிடம்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

6#4a. Curse on the Moon.

Dakshan got twenty seven daughters more. He married all of them to the God of Moon. He told his son in law, “Love all my daughters equally. Treat them all well!”

The God of moon loved all his wives, but as days rolled on he became more attached to Kaarthigai and Rohini and neglected the other wives. The twenty five daughters complained to their father Dakshan about the indifference towards them

Dakshan cursed the God of Moon,”May you reduce in your beauty and strength everyday!”The full moon has sixteen “kalai”. The moon started losing “a kalai” of his beauty everyday.

Soon only one was left. The next day he would become invisible. He did not know what to do and went to Indra seeking advice.
 
4b. இந்திரன், சந்திரன்

“தக்கனின் சாபத்தால் அழிந்து விட்டன
மிக்க அழகு வாய்ந்த என் கலைகள்!

எஞ்சி இருப்பது ஒரு கலை மட்டுமே!
அஞ்சி நிற்கிறேன் நாளை அழியும் இது!

மறைந்தே போய்விடும் என் உருவம்!
குறைந்தே போய்விடும் என் புகழும்!

செய்வது என்ன என்று அறியேன்;
செய்வாய் காலத்தால் ஒரு உதவி!”

“அஞ்சாதே என் இனிய நண்பனே!
எஞ்சி உள்ளதே ஒரு கலையெனும்.

ஒருநாள் நகைத்தாய் கணபதியின்
திருவயிற்றை, மோதகத்தைக் கண்டு.

கணபதி சினந்து சாபம் அளித்தார்,
“காணாமல் அழிந்து போகக் கடவாய்!”

அன்று முதல் உன்னைக் காணமல் செல்ல
விண்ணில் இயங்காமல் ஒடுங்கினாய் நீ!

சென்றனர் தேவர்கள் கணபதியிடம்,
வேண்டினர் சாபத்தை மாற்றி அமைக்க.

ஆவணித் திங்கள் பூர்வ பட்ச சதுர்த்தியில்
அண்ணலைப் பூஜித்து உன்னை ஒதுக்கினர்.

இருக்கும் பழிபோதாது என்று இன்று
இன்னொரு பழியும் வந்து சேர்ந்தது.

நான்முகனை அணுகி விண்ணப்பித்தால்
தன் மகன் சாபத்தை மாற்றி விடுவார்.”

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

6#4b. Indran and Chandran.

“I lost all my beauty and my body due to the curse of Dakshan. Now I have just one kalai which will also vanish tomorrow. I will become invisible and my name and fame will be destroyed!” Chandra lamented to Indra. “I am at my wit’s ends. please tell me what to do now!”

“Do not worry dear friend Chandran!At least you still have one kalai left. Once you laughed at and made fun of Ganapthy’s pot belly and the modakam in his hand.

He cursed that you should disappear. You hid yourself from that day. Deva went to Ganapathy and requested him to change the saapam.

Now you have got one more curse in addition. Go to Brahma. I am sure he can undo his son’s curse.”
 
4c. சந்திரனும், பிரமனும்.

சத்திய லோகத்தைச் சென்றடைந்தான்
சந்திரன் இந்திரன் கூறிய வண்ணம்.

நான்முகனை வணங்கிக் கூறினான்,
நாணத்துடன் தான் பெற்ற சாபத்தை!

“தக்கனிடம் கூறி சாபத்தை விலக்குவீர்!”
மிக்க பணிவோடு விண்ணப்பம் செய்தான்.

“எடுத்துச் சொன்னாலும் கேளான் தக்கன்” என
மறுத்துவிட்டான் வேண்டுகோளை நான் முகன்.

“அன்பர் துயர் தீர்ப்பவன் என்றும் நம்முடைய
அன்பருக்கு அன்பன் சிவபெருமான் அன்றோ?

காலனை உதைத்துச் சிறுவனைக் காத்தது
நீலகண்டன் என்பதை அறியாயோ நீ?

விடை ஏறும் பிரான் இருப்பதே தன்
அடியாருக்கு அருள் புரிவதற்கே ஆம்.

சிவன் திருவடிகளைச் சரண் புகுவாய்.
அவன் திருவருளால் சாபம் ஒழிப்பாய்!”

சந்திரன் அடைந்தான் கயிலை மலையை.
நந்தி தேவரிடம் சென்று விண்ணப்பித்தான்.

சிவன் தாள் பணிந்து அருள் வேண்டினான்.
சிவன் மனம் இளகியது; அருள் பெருகியது;

எஞ்சிய ஒரு கலையை அணிந்தார் சடையில்.
அஞ்சி விலகியது தக்கனின் இட்ட சாபம்!

“செஞ்சடை சேர்ந்த கலைக்கு அழிவில்லை.
அஞ்சாதே இனி அழிவில்லை உனக்கு!

பழைய கலைகள் வளர்ந்து பின் தேயும்
பதினைந்து நாட்களில் ஒரு கிரமப்படி!”

விண்ணில் மீண்டும் இயங்கினான் சந்திரன்
தன் கலைகள் வளர்ந்து, தேயும் வண்ணம்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

6#4c. Chandran and Brahman.

Chandran went to Sathyalokam straightaway. He worshiped Brahma and requested him to speak to his son Dakshan and remove the curse put by him.

Brahma refused and said, “It will be useless talking to Dakshan. He would never remove his curse. Instead of it, you can approach Lord Siva and beg for his grace.

He is ever ready to protect and save his devotees. You surely know how he protected the boy Maarkkandeyan from the clutches of Yama. Surely Siva will save you from you curse!”

Chandran went straight to Kailash. He put his request to Nandhi Devan. He met Siva and explained the critical situation he was in!

Siva took pity on him. He immediately wore the single kalai of Chandran on his jada. Dakshan’s curse was removed by Siva’s grace.

“Do not worry Chandra! You are free from the curse now. I can restore your glory this way. Your sixteen kalais will be added one by one and also get reduced one by one everyday.”

Chandra was happy that he was saved at the nick of the moment. He started traveling in the sky as before. The waxing and waning affects his beauty and size but he would never disappear completely!
