5#17b. மந்தோதரி (2)

“திருமண பந்தத்தில் விருப்பமில்லை எனக்கு;
இருக்க வேண்டும் காலமெல்லாம் கன்னியாக.

சுதந்திரம் வேண்டும் மோனத் தவம் செய்திட,
சுதந்திரம் பறி போகும் திருமணம் புரிந்தால்.

அடிமையாக வேண்டும் ஓர் ஆண்பிள்ளைக்கு;
அடைய முடியாது என்னால் மோட்ச சுகத்தை!

சேவை செய்ய வேண்டும் அவன் உறவினருக்கு;
சேவை செய்து என் சுதந்திரத்தை நான் இழப்பேன்!

அறிய முடியாது கணவனின் உண்மை அன்பை;
அறிந்தால் துயர் விளையும் வேறு தொடர்பை.

துக்கமே வரும் பெண்களுக்கு மணவாழ்வில்;
சுகம் என்பது சொப்பனத்தில் வரும் சுகம் தான்.

உத்தானனின் மகன் அரசன் உத்தமன் — தன்
உத்தம மனைவியை விரட்டினான் கானகம்.

பெண்ணுக்குத் துயர் தருபவன் கணவன் – வரும்
பெண்ணுக்கு விரகதாபம் கணவனைப் பிரிந்தால்.

பெண்ணை ஒதுக்குவார் கணவனை இழந்தால்;
பெண்ணுப் பெண்ணே எதிரி ஆகிவிடுவாள்.

விளைவது இத்தனை துயரமும் எப்போது?
விழைந்து ஒரு கணவனை வரிக்கும் போது!”

குணவதி உரைத்தாள் கணவனுக்கு இதை;
மணப் பேச்சு ஆகிப் போனது பழைய கதை.

5#17b. Mandothari (2)

Mandothari told her mother Gunavathi,” I do not want to gt married. I want to spend my life as a virgin. I want to do severe penance and obtain liberation from bondage.

But if I get married, all my liberties will be curbed by my husband and I will have to become his slave. I will have to serve him as well as all his kin and kith.

I can never be sure of his love for me. If there are other women in his life, it will be a greater torture. Marriage spells the end of happiness for most women. Happiness can be had only in dreams.

Utthaman was the son of Utthaanan and he banished his wife to a forest. A Husband causes sufferings for his wife. If he leaves her she will suffer the pang of love. If he dies the widowed wife will be kept at a distance by every one else.

Women are the enemies of women. When does this happen? Only when a girl decides to marry and selects a husband. I will never do it!”

The queen Gunavathi was very upset but Mandothari was determined. So she conveyed this to the king. Thereafter there was no talk about the wedding of Mandothari, in the palace.

KANDA PURAANAM - MAHENDRA KAANDAM

21g. சூரபத்மனின் சீற்றம்.

அரிமாமுகனின் அறிவுரையைக் கேட்டு,
சூரன் நகைத்தான் தன் கைகளைத் தட்டி.

அளவு கடந்த சினம் பொங்கி வழிந்திட,
இளவலைப் பார்த்து இகழலுற்றான்;

“இந்திராதி தேவர்களுக்கு அஞ்சினாயா?
மந்திரத்தால் உந்தன் மனம் அழிந்தாயா?

எமது சக்தி உம்மை வெல்லும் என்று
நமது பிரான் கூறியது கேட்டிலேன்.

பொய் மொழிகள் புனைந்துரைத்து
மெய் போல் அதை நம்பச்சொல்கிறாய்.

மேன்மைகள் தந்த ஒருவரே அந்த
மேன்மைகளைப் பறிப்பதும் உண்டோ?

வேள்விகள் செய்து மேன்மை பெறாது
வேற்படைக்கு அழிந்தான் தாரகன்;

குழந்தை போன்ற வஜ்ஜிரவாகுவும்
அழிந்து போனான் அறியாமையினால்;

என்னிடம் உள்ள குறை என்ன கூறு!
என்றும் அழியாத ஒரு வஜ்ஜிரகாயம்;

தேவர்கள் இப்போது என் ஏவலர்கள்;
தேவைகளைப் புரியும் தொண்டர்கள்;

திருமால், தேவர்கள் கண்டு அஞ்சும்
பெருமை படைத்தவன் அன்றோ நான்?

சிறுவனோ வந்து கொலை செய்வான்?
அறியாமல் பேசுகின்றாய் அச்சத்தால்.”

3 # 21g. Soorapadman’s rage.


Soorapadman became very angry on hearing the words of wisdom spoken by his younger brother Singamukhan. He clapped his hands and laughed in anger.

He spoke to Singamukahn with utter scorn, “Are you afraid of the Devas and Indra? Have you lost you mind due to an evil spell? Siva never told us that his shakti will destroy us. You tell me lie and you want me to believe it.

After giving us boons, will the same lord remove them? Taaraka did not perform yaaga to acquire super powers. So he got killed.

Vajrabaahu was no more than a child. So he got killed. Tell me now! What is my weak point? I have a vajya kaayam-a body as strong as a diamond. Devas are now my servants and obey my orders.

Even Vishnu and Brahma are afraid of me. How can Murugan, a mere child kill me? You are out of your senses overcome by your fear!”

21h. அரிமுகன் அறிவுரை.

“தவம் செய்தாய் சிவனை நினைத்து;
அவன் அளித்தான் பல மேன்மைகளை.

எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் உண்டு முடிவு ஒன்று!
நல்லதாயினும் சரி, அல்லதாயினும் சரி!

உணர மறுக்கிறாய் உண்மைகளை;
அவுண அரசனே ஆலோசனை செய்.

அறநெறிகளைத் துறந்துவிட்டாய் நீ.
ஆண்மையால் செயல்புரிகின்றாய் நீ.

வரத்தைக் கொடுத்தபிரானே அதைப்
பறித்து விடலாகாது என்று கருதியே

திருமகனைத் தோற்றுவித்துள்ளார்!
பிற உயிர்போல் அவனை எண்ணாதே!

திரு நுதற்கண்ணில் தோன்றியவன்;
மறைகளும் அறிந்திட முடியாதவன்;

அனைத்தும் அறிந்து உணர்ந்தவன்;
அனைத்துக்கும் அவனே முதல்வன்;

அறிவே வடிவான அவன் இயல்புகள்;
அறிவுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டது அறிவாய்!

முப்பத்தாறு தத்துவங்களையும் விஞ்சி,
அப்பால் நிற்கும் பரம்பொருள் அவன்.

கூறுதற்கரிய முழு முதற் பொருள்!
சிறுவன் ஒருவன் என மயங்காதே.

கணப் பொழுதில் அழிக்க வல்லவன்
கணக்கற்ற அவுணர்களை, உன்னை!

ஆக்கவும், காக்கவும் வல்லவன் அவன்.
ஆணவம் அழிக்க வந்துள்ளான் செந்தூர்.

அழியாத உடல் உண்டு என்னாதே;
அழிவு உண்டு தோன்றும் உயிர்க்கு.

விண்ணுலகமும் கூட இதற்கு ஒரு
விதிவிலக்கு ஆகாது அறிவாய்!

கொடுத்த இறைவனே எடுத்தால்
தடுக்க முடியுமா எவரேனும் கூறு!

நன்மையை நாடி நலம் தரும்
மேன்மை உரைப்பேன் சிறை நீக்கு!”

VINAAYAKA PURAANAM 2

11h. இந்திரன் மமதை

தேவர்கள் தந்தனர் மகோற்கடருக்குத்
தெய்வீக சக்திகளை மிகுந்த அன்புடன்.

மமதை கொண்ட இந்திரன் மட்டும்
மனமுவந்து அளிக்கவில்லை பரிசு!

முனிவரும், தேவரும் சிறுவனுடன் நிற்கத்
தனித்து விலகி நின்றான் இந்திரன் மட்டும்.

காசியபர் கூறினார் மகன் இந்திரனிடம்,
“ஆசி பெறுவாய் மகோற்கடரிடம் நீயும்!

சின்னஞ் சிறு குழந்தை தானே இவன்;
என் இளவல் தானே என்று எண்ணாதே.

ஆதிப் பரம்பொருளே அன்புடன் இங்கு
கோதில்லாத குமாரனாக வந்துள்ளான்! ”

“சிறுவனை நான் வணங்குவதா? நடவாது!
சிறுவன் பெறட்டும் என்னிடம் ஆசிகள்!”

சினந்தான் இந்திரன், பணித்தான் வாயுவை,
“கனத்த காற்றாகி உருட்டிவிடு சிறுவனை”

வாயு அறிவான் சிறுவன் பெருமையை;
வாயு உணர்த்துவான் இந்திரனுக்கு அதை.

சூறாவளிக் காற்றாகி வீசலானான் வாயு!
மாறாமல் நின்றவர் மகோற்கடர் ஒருவரே!

நிலை தடுமாறியது உலகம் முழுவதும்!
நிலை தடுமாறின உயிர்த் தொகை எல்லாம்!

அப்போதும் பணியவில்லை இந்திரன்;
இப்போது பணித்தான் அக்கினியையும்,

“காற்றுடன் சேர்த்து பரப்பு வெப்பத்தை;
ஏற்றத்தை உணரட்டும் அந்தச் சிறுவன்!”

காற்றுடன் சேர்ந்து வீசியது வெப்பமும்;
மாற்ற விரும்பினார் மகோற்கடர் அதனை.

VINAAYAKA PURAANAM 2

#41h. Indra’s pride

All the Deva presented the child Mahorkadar with some rare gift or special power except Indra. All the rushis and Deva stood surrounding the child while Indra stood aloof from the group.

Kashyap told his son Indra,” You too take the blessings of Mahorkadar. Do not think he is just your younger brother. He is the god supreme who is born as your little brother.”

“I will never prostrate to the little boy. If he wants, let him come and get my blessings!” Indra was adamant.

Indra became angry and wanted to prove his supremacy over the little child. He ordered Vaayu, “Blow fiercely and make that boy roll down on earth”

Vaayu knew the greatness of the child and he wanted to prove it to Indra. He blew fiercely like a terrible storm. The whole world lost its balance.

All the living things lost their balance but Little Mahorkadar stood undisturbed by the fierce wind.

Now Indra became even more angry. He ordered Agni, “Join hands with Vaayu and spread your heat everywhere. The hot air blowing was too terrible to bear.

Mahorkadar decided to change it.

11i. விஸ்வரூபம்

புன்னகை செய்தார் அக்கினியைக் கண்டு.
மண்ணில் விழுந்தான் பலமிழந்த அக்கினி!

விண்ணவர் கோனுக்கு உண்மை உணர்த்த
விண்ணுக்கும் மண்ணுக்குமாக வளர்ந்தார்!

முடி தாண்டிச் சென்றது தேவலோகத்தை!
அடி தாண்டிச் சென்றது பாதாளலோகத்தை!

ஆயிரம் ஆயிரம் முகங்கள், கரங்களுடன்,
ஆகாயத்துக்கும் பூமிக்கும் பரவிய உருவம்.

அண்டங்கள் தொங்கின மயிர்க் கால்களில்;
அண்டம் ஒன்றில் நுழைந்தான் இந்திரன்.

கண்டான் ஈரேழு உலகங்களையும் அங்கு.
கண்டான் முப்பத்து முக்கோடி தேவர்களை.

கண்டான் மும்மூர்த்திகளைத் தேவியருடன்
கண்டான் மும்மூர்த்திகளின் இருப்பிடங்கள்.

கண்டான் இந்திர லோகத்தையும் அங்கே
கண்டான் இந்திரனாகத் தன்னையே அங்கு.

மமதை மறைந்தது; அறிவு தெளிந்தது;
மறந்துவிட்டான் வெளி வரும் வழியை.

கண்களை மூடிப் பிரார்த்தித்தான் நன்கு,
“என் பிழை பொறுத்து அருள்வீர்” என்று.

அன்புடன் அவனை வெளிப் படுத்திவிட்டு
சின்னஞ் சிறு பாலகன் ஆனார் மீண்டும்.

பாதங்களில் விழுந்து பணிந்தான் – தன்
பரிசுகளாக அளித்தான் இந்திரன் – தன்

வஜ்ஜிராயுதம், அங்குசம், கற்பகத் தரு.
லஜ்ஜையுடன் விடை பெற்றான் இந்திரன்.

பணிவிடை செய்யத் தந்தான் தேவமாதரை.
பணிவுடன் தந்தவற்றை ஏற்றார் இறைவன்.

#41i. Viswaroopam

Mahorkadar smiled at Agni, who dropped down on the ground immediately – having lost all his powers!

Mahorkadar wanted to prove the truth to Indra. He assumed his Viswaroopam immediately.

His crown had crossed the Devalokam and his feet the Paataala lokam. He had thousands of faces and thousands of hands. He stood scaling the heaven and the earth.

The universes hung from his body hairs. Indra entered on of those universes. He saw the fourteen worlds there. He saw all the Deva there.

He saw the Trimoorthis there with their consorts. He their heavenly abodes there. He saw the Indralokam there. He saw himself as the Indra there.

Indra realized the truth that this child was none other than the god supreme. Meanwhile he had forgotten the way to come out of there. He closed his eyes and prayed,”Please pardon my ignorance and pride.”

Mahorkadar bought him out of his body lovingly and again stood like the small five year old boy in front of him. Indra fell at his feet.

He presented the child with his Vajraayudam, ankusham and the Karpaga Vruksham. He also gave some celestial maiden to serve him. He took leave of the little boy – fully realizing his greatness.

Mahorkadar graciously accepted Indra’s apology and the rich gifts given by him with complete humility.

DEVI BHAAGAVATAM - SKANDA 5

5#17c. வீரசேனன் (1)

பூத்துக் குலுங்கினாள் புஷ்பவதியான மந்தோதரி!
பார்த்துப் பரிதவித்தனர் மந்தோதரியின் தோழியர்.

“இத்தனை அழகும் இளமையும் பூரிப்பும் இப்படி
வியர்த்தமாகின்றதே யாரும் அனுபவிக்காமல்!”

வந்தான் கோசல தேசத்து அரசன் அவ்வழியே;
வந்தனர் தோழியர் அவன் அழகைப் புகழ்ந்தபடி!

உருகினான் அவ்வரசன் மந்தோதரியைக் கண்டு;
விரும்பினான் அந்த இளவரசியை மணம் புரிய,

“யார் இந்த சுந்தரி சொல்லுங்கள் எனக்கு!” எனவும்
“யார் நீங்கள் கூறுங்கள் முதலில் அதை எமக்கு!”

“வீரசேனன் என் பெயர்; கோசல நாட்டு மன்னன்!
வீரரிடமிருந்து விதிவசமாகப் பிரிந்து விட்டேன்!”

“சந்திரசேன மன்னனின் மூத்த குமாரி இவள்
மந்தோதரி என்ற பெயர் கொண்டவள் இவள் ”

“உயிராக மதிக்கிறேன் உங்கள் இளவரசியை;
உயிர் தரியேன் ஒரு கணமும் அவள் இன்றி!

காகுஸ்த வம்சத்து அரசன் வீரசேனன் நான்;
கந்தர்வ மணம் புரியவேண்டும் இக்கன்னியை!

என்ன தடை இருக்கும் இவளை நான் மணக்க?
எனக்கேற்ற குலமும், குணமும் கொண்டவளை!

கந்தர்வ மணம் புரிந்திட விரும்பாவிடில்
கடி மணம் புரிவேன் மன்னனிடம் பேசி !”

சென்றாள் தோழி மறுமொழி கூறாமல்;
செப்பினாள் விவரம் மந்தோதரியிடம்.

5#17c. Veerasenan (1)

Mandothari attained puberty and became very beautiful. Her friends felt sad that all her beauty and youth were being wasted by her remaining unmarried and single.

One day Veerasenan, the king of Kosala Kingdom, came by that way. The friends of Princess Mandothari were bowled over by his handsome appearance and were discussing about it.

Veerasenan saw Mandothari and fell head over heels in love with her at the very first sight. He demanded to know who she was from her friends. But those girls wanted to know who he was!

He replied, “I am Veerasenan, the king of Kosala desam. I got separated from my soldiers and happened to come this way. The girls told him, “This is our princess Mandothari – the eldest daughter of our king Chandrasenan.

Veerasenan told them, “I love your princess dearer than my life. I want to marry her now and here in a Gandharva vivaaham.

What can be the objection when we are both well matched in race, age and beauty. If she does not want Gandharva vivaaham I shall talk to the king her father and seek his permission to marry her”

The girls did not reply anything to him. On the other hand they went to Mandothari and told her everything.

5#17d. வீரசேனன் (2)

கூறினர் தோழிகள் இளவரசி மந்தோதரிக்குச்
சூரிய வம்சத்து மன்னன் கூறிய மொழிகளை.

“நிற்கின்றான் ஒரு மன்னன் நந்தவனத்தில்;
கற்பனைக்கு எட்டாத அற்புத ஆணழகன்.

மனோகரன், வசீகரன், வாலிப வயதினன்;
மன்மதனுக்குச் சகோதரன் போன்றவன்.

சூரிய வம்சத்து மன்னன் வீரசேனன் அவன்,
வாரிப் பொழிகின்றான் உன் மேல் காதலை!

கவலைப் படுகின்றார் உன் தந்தையார் – அவர்
கவலைகள் தீர்ந்துவிடும் கடிமணம் நடந்தால்.

பதி சேவையே பரம தர்மம் பெண்ணுக்கு;
விதித்துள்ளது இங்ஙனம் தர்ம சாஸ்திரம்.

கடினம் காம தேவனை வெற்றி கொள்வது
கடிமணம் புரிந்து கொள் இந்த மன்னனை!”

சினந்தாள் மந்தோதரி தன் தோழியரிடம்
சீறினாள் அருந்தவத்தைக் கலைத்ததற்கு.

“வந்த வழியே போகச் சொல் அவரை- வீணே
என் தவத்தைக் கலைக்க வேண்டாம் அவர்!”

வீரசேனனிடம் சென்று உரைத்தனர் தோழியர்,
“வீராப்பைக் கைவிடவில்லை மந்தோதரி!

விரும்பிச் சென்றால் விலகிச் செல்கிறாள்
விரும்பிய வாழ்க்கை இல்லை உமக்கு!” என

திரும்பிச் சென்றான் துயருடன் வீரசேனன்
விரும்பிய நங்கை மறுத்துக் கூறியதால்.

5#17d. Veerasenan (2)

Mandothari’s friends told her,” There is a handsome king in our garden. He is handsome beyond one’s imagination. He will steal anyone’s heart and attract them He is very young.

He could very well be a brother of Manmathan. He is Veerasenan the King of Kosala Desam. He is head over heels in love with you.

Your father is worried about your wedding. If you accept the proposal of this king, your father will be relieved of his worries.

A woman’s dharma is to serve her husband. That is what neethi saastraas tell us. It is difficult to defeat love, lust and other natural feelings. Please get married to this king and make us all happy”

Bur Mandothari was furious. “Tell him to go back the same way he had come here. Do not disturb my penance and my vratam.”

Her friends went back to Veerasenan and told him,” Mandothari is very stubborn. She will not give up her vratam and marry anyone. We are sorry you did not get your wish fulfilled.”

Veerasenan felt crestfallen and went back sadly with a heavy heart – since his sincere love was not reciprocated by that beautiful princess Mandothari.

5#18a. மஹிஷன் வதை (1)

வீரசேனனை மணக்க மறுத்த மந்தோதரி
வைராக்கியத்துடன் வாழ்ந்தாள் வெகுநாள்.

எய்தினாள் தங்கை இந்துமதி மணப் பருவம்,
செய்தான் சுயம்வர ஏற்பாடுகள் சந்திரசேனன்.

மாலையிட்டாள் மனம் கவர்ந்தவனுக்குத் தங்கை
மாலையிட விரும்பினாள் ஒருவனுக்குத் தமக்கை.

வந்திருந்த மன்னர்களில் ஒருவன் அவன்
மந்திர தேசத்து மன்னன் சாருதோஷ்ணன்.

தந்தையிடம் கூறினாள் தனது விருப்பத்தை;
தந்தை மணம் நடத்தினான் அம் மன்னனுடன்.

இன்ப வாழ்வு நடத்தினாள் அவள் சிலகாலம்
இன்ப வாழ்வே துன்பமயமானது விரைவில்.

வேலைக்காரன் மனைவியுடன் தன் கணவன்
குலாவுவதைக் கண்டு அதிர்ச்சி அடைந்தாள்!

வேறு பெண்களுடனும் சுகிப்பதைக் கண்டாள்
வேதனையுற்றாள் அதை ஜீரணிக்க இயலாது.

‘வஞ்சித்துவிட்டான் என்னை ஸ்த்ரீ லோலன்!
கிஞ்சித்தும் இனி வாழ்வில் இன்பம் இல்லை!’

உயிரை விடலாமா என்று எண்ணினாள்!
உயிரை விடுவது மகா பாவம் அல்லவா?

தந்தையிடம் கூறினால் பரிஹசிப்பர் தோழியர்!
நொந்த மனத்தினால் வாணாள் வீணாள் ஆனது!"

கூறினான் மஹிஷன் மந்தோதரி கதையை;
கூறினான் மஹிஷன் தேவியிடம் மேலும்;

“ஆம் என்று சொல்லி இன்புறுவாய் பெண்ணே!
ஆளாவாய் துன்பத்துக்கு மறுத்துப் பேசினால்!”

5#18a. Mahishan’s threat

Mandothari who refused to marry Veerasenan – the king of Kosala desam – lived in austerity for a long time. Her younger sister Indumati attained puberty. Chandrasenan arranged for her swayamvaram in a grand manner.

Indumati selected her husband from among the assembled kings. Mandothari also selected ChaaruthoshNan – the king of Mandira desam – as her husband. Chandrasenan was very happy to see both his daughters married off.

Mandothari lived happily for some time but soon her perspective of life changed. She saw her husband – the king of a country – intimately with the wife of one of their servants. Later she happened to see him with several other women.

She could not digest his behavior. She felt cheated and let down. She even contemplated suicide. But she knew it was a great sin. She could not disclose this shameful news even to her father fearing the ridicule of her friends and family. Her life became a mess and a total waste.”

Mahishan concluded the story and added ,”Accept me as your husband and live happily. If you reject me you too will suffer like Mandothari!”

5#18b. மஹிஷன் வதை (2)

“மந்தமதி படைத்த மஹிஷாசுரனே ! என்னையும்
மந்தோதரி போன்ற பெண்ணென எண்ணினாயோ?

வந்துள்ளேன் நான் உன்னை சம்ஹரிப்பதற்காகவே!
வா போருக்கு அல்லது போ பாதாள உலகத்துக்கு! ”

யுத்த வெறி கொண்டான் மஹிஷாசுரன் இப்போது!
வைத்துத் தொடுத்தான் சரமாரியாக பாணங்களை!

தடுத்துப் போர் செய்தாள் தேவி தன் பாணங்களால்;
மடிந்தான் துர்த்தரன் மலையைப் போல விழுந்து.

எய்தான் திரிநேத்திரன் ஏழு பாணங்களை – உடனே
எய்தாள் தேவியும் அவற்றுக்கு எதிர் பாணங்களை.

அந்தகன் அடித்தான் சிங்கத்தை உலக்கையால்;
அந்தகனைக் கொன்று, மென்று, தின்றது சிங்கம்.

அடைமழை என அம்புகளை எய்தான் மஹிஷன்
தடுத்துக் கதையால் அவனை அடித்தாள் தேவி .

விழுந்தான் மூர்ச்சித்த மஹிஷன் களத்தில்!
எழுந்தான் தெளிந்த மஹிஷன் கணத்தில் !

பாய்ந்து தாக்கினான் சிங்கத்தின் தலையை;
பாய்ந்து தாக்கியது சிங்கமும் மஹிஷனை.

சிங்க வடிவில் பொருதான் சிங்கத்துடன்- தேவி
சிங்க மஹிஷன் மீது எய்தாள் தன் நாகபாணம்!

எறிந்தான் மலைகளை யானை வடிவ மஹிஷன்!
தெறித்தாள் மலைகளை! சிரித்தாள் மஹாதேவி!

பாய்ந்தது சிங்கம் மஹிஷனின் மத்தகத்தில்!
பிளந்தது சிங்கம் மஹிஷனின் மத்தகத்தை!

சர்ப்ப வடிவெடுத்தான் மஹிஷன் அப்போது;
சர்ப்பத்தை வெட்டினாள் தேவி தன் வாளால்!

வெட்ட முயன்றான் தேவியை மஹிஷன் – ஆனால்
வெட்ட முடியவில்லை தேவியை மஹிஷனால்!

5#18b. Devi’s anger

“Do you think me to be an ordinary foolish girl like Mandothari? I have taken this avatar only to punish you and destroy you! Either come and fight with me or go back to Paataala now!” Devi spoke to Mahishan angrily.

Devi’s words made Mahishan’s infatuation for her evaporate in his seething anger. All he wanted now was to fight with Devi. He started shooting arrows like a rain cloud raining water droplets. Devi blockd or broke them with her own arrows.

Durdaran fell deal like an uprooted mountain. Trinetran shot seven arrows on Devi. Devi broke his arrows with her own. Andakan attacked Devi’s lion. The lion killed Andakan and devoured his dead body.

Devi blocked Mahishan’s cloud of arrows and attacked him with her mace. Mahishan fainted in the battle field but came round soon. Now he attacked Devi’s lion on its head. The lion struck him back with its powerful claws and paws.

Mahishan now transformed himself into a lion and fought with Devi’s lion. Devi shot her Naaga BaaNam on Mahishan. Now he changed into a wild elephant, uprooted mountains and tossed them around.

Devi’s lion jumped on the elephant and split its head into two. Mahishan changed his form to a serpent. Devi cut the serpent with her sword. Mahishan tried attack Devi with his sword but could not!

5#18c. மஹிஷன் வதை (3)

சுயஉருவெடுத்தான் மஹிஷன் மீண்டும்
பெயர்த்து எறிந்தான் மலைகளைக் கெல்லி.

இடித்துத் தள்ளினான் தேவியைக் கொம்பால்!
இடி முழக்கம் செய்து நகைத்தான் மஹிஷன்.

வாலைச் சுழற்றி அடித்தான் தேவியை!
“வலிமை எங்கே போயிற்று பெண்ணே?

கொள்ளமாட்டேன் இனி மோஹம் உன்மீது!
கொல்ல வந்த உன்னை நான் கொல்வேன்!”

“அலறாதே எருமையனே போர்க்களத்தில்;
அழகானது அல்ல உன் குரல் கேட்பதற்கு.

துன்புறுத்தினாய் தேவர்களை, சாதுக்களை;
இன்புற்றாய் சுவர்க்கம் தரும் போகங்களில்.

ஒழித்து விடுகிறேன் தேவர்களின் அச்சத்தை;
ஒழித்து விடுகின்றேன் உன்னை மிச்சமின்றி! ”

சண்டிகை உருவெடுத்தாள் தேவி அப்போது;
கொண்டிருந்தாள் கையில் மதுப் பாத்திரம்.

சுவைத்து அருந்தினாள் திராக்ஷை ரசத்தை;
சூலாயுதத்துடன் துரத்தினாள் மஹிஷனை.

மாயப்போர் நிபுணன் மஹிஷன் தாக்கினான்
மாய வித்தைகளில் பல்வேறு வடிவெடுத்து.

சிவந்த கண்களுடன் குத்தினால் மஹிஷனை;
சிறிது நேரத்தில் தெளிந்து எழுந்தான் மஹிஷன்!

தாக்கினான் கால்களால் வெறியோடு மஹிஷன்;
தாக்கியது மஹிஷனைக் கதிர் வீசும் சக்கரம்.

அறுந்தது சக்கரத்தால் மஹிஷனின் சிரம்;
அறுத்த பின் திரும்பியது தேவியின் கரம்!

ஓடியது பெருகிய ரத்த வெள்ளம் பாய்ந்து!
ஆடினார் அமரர் ஆனந்த வெள்ளம் பாய !

அறைந்து தின்றது அசுரர்களைச் சிங்கம்;
விரைந்தனர் பாதாளம் மிஞ்சிய அசுரர்கள்.

சண்டிகை தேவியும் மறைந்து அருளினாள்;
கொண்டனர் பேருவகை விண்ணில் அமரர்.

5#18c. The end of Mahishan

Mahishan took his original form now – complete with a pair horns and a tail. He uprooted and tossed the mountains with his mighty horns. He attacked Devi with his horns and beat her by swirling his strong tail.

He laughed at her mockingly and shouted, “What has happened to your valor now? I will not desire you any more. Instead I will destroy you before you can destroy me!”

Devi said, “Don’t shout while you fight. Your voice is not too pleasing to hear. You were harassing the Devaas and the saadhus.

You were enjoying the pleasures of Heaven which do not belong to you. I will put an end to the sorrows of the Devaas. I will put an end to your atrocities.”

Now Devi assumed the form of Chandigai! She held a vessel of wine in her hand. She drank the grape wine from it and started chasing Mahishan with her trident.

Mahishan was an expert in warfare by Maayaa. He assumed various forms and fought with Devi.

Devi struck him with her trident and her eyes had turned red due to her anger. He fell faint but came round again.

Mahishan now attacked Devi with his powerful hoofs. Devi released her discus which was radiating light rays like a Sun. It severed the head of Mahishan and returned to the hands of Devi.

A river of fresh red blood flowed from Mahishan’s body. The mirth and joy of the Devaas flowed like a river of happiness.

Devi’s lion killed and ate the asuras who were still alive. The rest of the asuras fled to Paataala to save their lives.

Chandigai disappeared from the battle field. The Devaas were overwhelmed and started praising Devi.

Kanda puraanam - Mahendra kaandam

21i. சூரபத்மனின் பதில்.

பெருஞ்சினம் கொண்டான் முருகனின்
அருமை பெருமைகளை கூறக் கேட்டு!

“நேற்றுப் பிறந்த ஒருவனை நீயே
ஏற்றிப் பரம்பொருள் என்கின்றாய்.

கதிரவன் ஒருவனே என்ற போதிலும்
கணக்கற்ற குடநீரில் பிரதிபலிப்பான்.

குடங்கள் உடைந்தால் கலந்துவிடும்
குடவிண் பெருவிண்ணுடன் ஒன்றாக!

பலவகை உருவங்கள் மறையும் போது
பரம்பொருள் என்னும் ஒன்றே எஞ்சும்!

அணிகலன்கள் அனைத்தும் அடங்கும்
ஆணிப்பொன் என்னும் ஒரு தாதுவில்!

அனைத்து உயிர்களும் ஒன்றி அடங்கும்
அனைத்தையும் படைத்த பிரமத்தில்.

அழிவற்றவன் நானே வெல்வேன்
அறியாச் சிறுவன் முருகனைச் சமரில்!

நம் குலத்தினரை அழித்தனர் தேவர்;
நம் குலம் காக்க சிறையில் இட்டேன்.

குற்றம் செய்பவரை தண்டிப்பதும்
குறைவற்ற அரசநெறியே ஆகும்.

தேவர்களை நான் சிறை விடேன்!
தேவர் கோனையும் சிறை இடுவேன்!

சிவன் வந்தாலும் போர் புரிவேன்-அவன்
மகன் வந்தாலும் நான் போர் புரிவேன்!

தலைகள் பல இருந்தும் பயன் இல்லை.
குலப் பெயரைக் கெடுக்கவே பிறந்தாய்!

ஆண்மை இழந்த நீ செல்லலாம் – என்
மேன்மையால் பகைவனை வெல்வேன்!”

3 # 21 i. Soorapadman’s reply.

On hearing the greatness of Murugan enlisted by Singamukhan, Soorapadman became very angry.

“You call a child born yesterday as the Supreme God! Sun is one but it will get reflected by the water in hundreds of pots.
When the pots break, the “ghata aaskaasam” will merge with the “aakaasam”.

When the creation disappears only Brahman remains. All the various ornaments can be melted to give us the metal gold.
All the different creatures when destroyed merge with Brahman.

I am indestructible. I will conquer the boy called Murugan.
Devas harassed asuras. It is the duty of a king to punish the wrong doers.

I did my duty as the king of asuras. I shall never release them from prison. I will imprison Indra also soon. Let Siva come for the battle. I shall fight him. I shall fight Murugan also.

You are born only to bring disgrace to our race. You may have many heads but they are all useless. Now that you have turned into a coward, you may go and save your skin. I shall conquer Murugan by myself.”

21j. அரிமுகன் உடன்பாடு.

சூரபத்மனின் சொற்களைக் கேட்டு
வருந்தினான் மிகவும் அரிமாமுகன்.

'அறிவுரை பலவும் எடுத்துச் சொன்னேன்;
அறிவிலி என்று என்னை இகழ்ந்தான்.

அறவுரை பலவும் எடுத்துச் சொன்னேன்;
அறம் அறியாதவன் என்று சொன்னான்.

அறிவற்றவருக்கு அறிவுரை சொல்பவர்
அறிவற்றவர் என்பதும் கூட மெய்யே!

ஆணவத்தால் அறிவிழந்தவனைப்
பேணுவதற்கு வழி ஒன்றும் இல்லை.

ஊழை விலக்க வல்லவர் யார்
சூழும் தானே முன் வந்து நின்று!

சிவன் கூறிய காலம் முடிந்தது.
அவன் மகன் அழிப்பான் சூரனை.

அவன் போனபின் உயிர் எதற்கு?
அவனுக்கு முன் உயிர் விடுவேன்!'

“சிறியவன் என் குற்றம் பொறுத்து
அரிய போர்க்களம் செல்ல அனுமதி!”

அரிமாமுகனை மார்போடு அணைத்து,
“பரிசோதிக்கவே பலவாறு பேசினாயோ?

படையுடன் போருக்குச் சித்தம் ஆகுக!”
விடை கொடுத்து அனுப்பினான் சூரன்.

இத்துடன் மகேந்திர காண்டம் முடிவுற்றது.
