KANDA PURAANAM - ASURA KAANDAM

2 # 16. THE PATTABHISHEKHAM.

Soorapadman was well impressed by the new city Veeramahendra Puram and praised Viswakarma’s talents. All the devas came together to crown Soorapadman as their new King.

He was made to sit on a fine seat. The holy waters was poured on him and he was dressed in silk, gold ornaments, flowers and fine jewels. He sat on his throne. Brahman placed the crown on his head.

The devas and asuras praised Sooran. He became the king of devas. Indra held the spittoon and Kubera the bag of betel leaves.

Vaayu waved the saamaram. The sun and the moon held the white umbrellas. Gandarvas and garuda sang and all the apsaraas danced.

The rushis and the asuras blessed Sooran. Yama and Agni controlled and regulated the crowd assembled there.

1a. ராவணன்

இடைவிடாத தவம் கையிலையில் புரிந்து
இலங்கேஸ்வரன் மகிழ்வித்தான் பிரானை.

“வரம் என்ன கோருகிறாய் இலங்கேஸ்வரா?”
“வரம் ஒன்று தான் வேண்டும் என் இறைவா!

பிரளய காலத்திலும் அழியாமல் நிலைத்து
இருக்க வேண்டும் என் லங்காபுரி மட்டும்!”

சிவலிங்கம் ஒன்றை அளித்தார் சிவபிரான்;
சில விதி முறைகளையும் உடன் வகுத்தார்.

“நிறுவிப் பூஜித்து வா இதை இலங்கையில்!
நிலைத்து நிற்கும் இலங்கை என்றைக்கும்!

ஏறிச் செல்லக்கூடாது எந்த வாகனத்திலும்;
நிறுவக் கூடாது இதைத் தரையில் எங்கும்;

வைத்தால் லிங்கம் பதிந்து விடும் அங்கே.
வைத்ததை எடுக்க முடியாது மீண்டும்” என

இலங்கை இனி என்றும் அழியாது என்றதும்
நிலை குலைந்து போனான் தேவேந்திரன்!

ஓடினான் விக்கின ராஜரிடம் விரைந்து;
நாடினான் உதவியை வரத்தை முறித்திட!

வருணனை அழைத்தார் விக்ன விநாயகர்.
தரச் சொன்னார் நீர் உபாதை ராவணனுக்கு!

சிறுநீர் பெருநீராகித் தொல்லை தரவே
அறியவில்லை அவன் என் செய்வதென!

அந்தணச் சிறுவன் வடிவில் வினாயகர்
சிந்தை குழம்பிய ராவணனிடம் வந்தார்.

#31a. RaavaNan

RavaNan performed a long and hard penance to please Lord Siva. In return he wanted this boon that, even during the dissolution of the whole world due to praLaya, Lanka should not get destroyed.

Siva granted the boon and presented him with a siva lingam. He also laid some conditions for the boon to become effective. Siva told RavaNan,

“Establish this sivla lingam in Lanka and do aaraadhana regularly. Lanka will never get destroyed. While transporting this to Lanka, you should not ride on any vehicle. You must not set this lingam on the ground. If you put it down, it will get fixed to the same spot and you won’t be able to take it off again.”

RavaNan was only too happy with his boon and agreed to all the terms and conditions laid by Lord Siva.

When Indra learned that Lanka could never be destroyed once the siva lingam was established there, he ran to Vinayaka for help to defeat this scheme. Vinayaka ordered Varuna to cause urinary discomfort to RavaNan.

Soon RavaNan was not able to contain or control his heavy bladder and urgently needed to relieve himself at any cost. But he could not put down the siva lingam on the ground either.

Just then Vinayaka took the form of a young brahmachaari and walked towards RavaNan.

4#12a. ஜனமேஜயனின் ஆதங்கம்

“புத்திமான் அல்லவோ தேவகுரு பிருஹஸ்பதி?
சத்தியமே தர்மத்தின் வேர் என்று அறியாரோ?

நயவஞ்சகமாகச் செய்தார் ஆள் மாறாட்டம் எனில்
கயவர்கள் செய்வதில் என்ன வியப்பு கூறுங்கள்!

தேவர்கள், தேவ குரு, மும்மூர்த்திகள் என்பவர்
தேவைக்கேற்பத் தீச் செயல்கள் புரிந்துள்ளனர்.

காமம், குரோதம், பொய், நயவஞ்சகம் மற்றும்
கபடம்,பிறன்மனை விழைதல் போன்ற என்னோ!

கதி என்னவாகும் இழிசெயல் புரிந்தோருக்கு?
கதி கலங்குகின்றது எண்ணும் போதே!”என்றான்

ஜனமேயன் எழுப்பினான் ஐயங்களை
ஜனமேஜயனுக்கு உரைதார் வியாசர்.

“மனித உடல் எடுத்தவுடனேயே அனைவரும்
மனித குணங்களையும் அடைகின்றார்கள்.

இருபத்து நான்கு தத்துவங்களால் ஆன சரீரம்
இருக்கும் வரை தப்பாது முக்குண விகாரம்.

சுக, துக்கங்கள் ஆகிவிடும் சுழல் சக்கரம்!
இக, பர ஞானங்கள் அடைவது துர்லபம்!

காமாதிகளைப் புறக்கணிக்க ஒரே வழி
காமினியைத் தவிர்ப்பது என்று அறிவாய்!

மங்கையர் வசப்பட்டவர் உலகில் எந்நாளும்
சங்கப் பரித் தியாகிகளாக சஞ்சரிக்க இயலாது!”

4#12a. Janamejayan’s doubts

“I thought Deva guru Bruhaspati was intelligent ! Surely he must have been aware of the fact that truthfulness is the foundation of Dharma! If he could impersonate as the Asura guru, why won’t the wicked people do such things?

I see that the the Devaas, the Deva guru as well as The Trinity indulged in adharmic activities depending on their needs. They too were filled with desire, anger, spoke lies and cheated.

They were treacherous and coveted the wives of other men and gods. What will be the fate of the doers of such evil actions? I shudder at the very thought'”

Sage Vyaasaa tried to explain these things to the King Janamejayan.

“The moment we a get a body, we also get the three guNaas along with it. The body is made up of twenty four tatvaas (factors) and it can never remain unaffected by the three guNaas.

Sukham and Dukham follow like day and night in an infinite loop. Obtaining the gnaanam of this world or the next world becomes impossible.

The only way to overcome the six defects of the mind is to avert the cause of samsaaraa – the association with a woman. Only those who are free from the bonds of samsaaraa and association with women can live unattached to the world.”

17a. அரசாட்சி.

“என் தந்தைக்குப் பாட்டன் முறை நீ!
நான் அழைக்கும்போது விரைந்து வா!”

திருமாலிடம் ஆணை இட்டான் சூரபத்மன்.
தினமும் பஞ்சாங்கம் சொல்வதற்கு பிரமன்;

என்றைக்கும் இளம் வெயிலாகக் கதிரவன்,
என்றைக்கும் முழுக்கலையுடன் சந்திரன்;

நினைத்தபோது வந்து பணிகள் புரிந்து,
அனைவருக்கும் குளிர்ச்சியான அக்கினி;

“எல்லா உயிர்கள் போல் எண்ணிக் கொண்டு
கொல்லக் கூடாது அவுணர்களை, விலங்குகளை!”

எமனிடம் ஆணை இட்டான் சூரபத்மன்;
எத்தனை தேவர்களோ அத்தனை ஆணைகள்,

நகர் பெருக்கி சுத்தம் செய்ய வாயுதேவன்,
நீர் தெளித்துச் சீராக்கிட வருணதேவன்,

குற்றேவல் புரிய வரவேண்டும் தினமும்,
மற்ற தேவர்கள் நாள் தவறாமல் அங்கே!

2 (# 17a). SOORAPADMAN’S RULE.

“You are my great grandfather. You must come to me whenever I call you!”
Soorapadman told Vishnu. Brahma was commissioned to read the panchangam everyday.

The Sun was commanded to keep his rays always gentle and pleasant.

The moon was commanded to be always a full moon and not to wane and wax.
Yama was commanded not to kill the asuras and their animals.

Each deva was given a task to perform. Vayu was ordered to sweep clean the city everyday. Varuna was ordered to sprinkle water to settle the dust.

The remaining Devas were ordered to come everyday to perform the other odd jobs and the menial jobs.

1b. கோகர்ணர்

“கும்பிடப் போன தெய்வம் குறுக்கேயா?”
அம்பி ஒருவன் தோன்றினான் கண்முன்!

“தரையில் வைத்து விடாதே தம்பி இதைத்
தாங்குவாய் உன் இரண்டு கைகளிலேயே!

சிறிது நேரத்தில் வந்து விடுவேன் நான்;
சிறுநீர் கழிப்பதற்கு அவசர அவசியம்!”

“சிறிது நேரம் தான் தாங்க முடியும் – நான்
சின்னப் பையன் தானே ஐயா!” என்றான்.

“போனேன் வந்தேன் என்னும்படி நான்
போனவுடன் வந்துவிடுவேன் அப்பனே!”

“மூன்று முறை அழைப்பேன் உங்களை!
பின்னர் வைத்துவிடுவேன் தரையில்!”

“என்னவோ செய் உன் இஷ்டம் போல!
என்னைப் போகவிடு!” என்று ஓடினான்.

அந்தப் பக்கம் ராவணன் சென்றவுடனேயே,
அந்தணச் சிறுவன் அழைத்தான் மும்முறை.

தான் வந்த வேலை எளிதில் முடிந்தது எனத்
தரையில் வைத்துவிட்டான் சிவலிங்கத்தை!

திரும்பிய ராவணன் அங்கு கண்டது என்ன?
இருந்தது தரைமேல் அந்தச் சிவலிங்கம்!

பதிந்துவிட்டது அது அசைக்க முடியாதபடி;
பத்துக் கைகளால் பற்றி இழுத்த போதிலும்!

இழுக்க இழுக்க வலிய பத்துக் கரங்களால்
குழைந்தது சிவலிங்கம் பசுவின் காதுபோல.

குழைந்த லிங்கத்தின் அழகிய புதுப் பெயர்
வழங்கலானது அன்றிலிருந்து கோகர்ணர்.

மகாபலவான் ஆன ராவணனை வென்றதால்,
மகாபலேச்வர் என்றும் ஒரு பெயர் உள்ளது.

#31b. GokarNar

RavaNan needed to relieve himself very badly and was happy to see a young brahmin boy in front of him. He urged the boy to take charge of the siva lingam for a while. “Please do not put it down on the ground. I shall be back in a moment.”

The boy said, “I am only small child. I can’t hold the heavy lingam for a very long time. I shall call you thrice. If you don’t come back, I will put it down on the ground” RavaNan was in a great hurry and ran away after handing over the siva ligam.

The boy was in fact Vinayaka in disguise and had come with a plan to foil RavaNan’s attempt to transport the lingam to Lanka. He called Ravanan thrice as soon as he disappeared from his eyes and put down the lingam on the ground!

He was very happy that his mission was so easily accomplished.

RavaNan was shocked to find the lingam on the ground. He went and tried to lift it up again, but it would not budge. The more he tried to pull it off with his twenty hands, the more the lingam got distorted to resemble the ear of a cow.

It is called by a new name from then on as GokarNar. Since the siva lingam defied the mighty RavaNan’s attempts to pull it out, it is also called as Mahaabaleswar.

4#12b. வியாசரின் விளக்கம்

வியாசர் தொடர்ந்தார் தமது விளக்கத்தை
விசனப் படும் மன்னன் ஜனமேஜயனிடம்.

” தாழ்வடைந்தான் சந்திரன் குரு பத்தினி
தாரையை விரும்பி உடன் வாழ்ந்ததால்.

விரும்பிதால் சகோதரனின் மனைவியை,
குரு பிரஹஸ்பதியும் மிக இழிவடைந்தார்.

சுழல்கிறது சம்சாரம் பெரிய சக்கரம் போன்று.
சுழல்கின்றனர் சம்சாரிகள் அதில் தொடர்ந்து!

மாயசக்தி மறைக்கும் சிந்தனா சக்தியை,
மாற்றி விடும் மனத்தை கள்வெறிபோல்.

தேவியின் மாயையை வென்றிட – அந்த
தேவியே தண்ணருள் புரிந்திட வேண்டும்!

அசுரகுரு உருவிலே தேவகுரு போதித்தார்
அசுரருக்கு அசுர ஞானத்தையே தொடந்து.

அசுரகுருவென்று அவரை நம்பிய அசுரர்
ஆடினர் அவர் ஆட்டுவித்தபடி எல்லாம்.

ஜயந்தியுடன் சுகித்த காலம் முடிவுற்றது.
ஜயித்து வருவார் என்று காத்திருந்த தன்

சீடர்களைச் சந்திக்கும் வேளையும் வந்தது.
“சீக்கிரம் திரும்புவேன் மீண்டும் உன்னிடம்!”

விடை பெற்றுச் சென்ற அசுரகுரு சுக்கிரன்
நடை பெறும் நாடகம் கண்டு அதிர்ந்தார்.

கள்ள குரு போதித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்
மெள்ள மெள்ள பொல்லாத ஞானத்தை!

அதிர்ந்து போனார் சுக்கிரன் இது கண்டு!
‘விதி விளையாடுமா வாழ்வில் இப்படி?

நடை உடை பாவனை அனைத்தும் மாற்றி
நான் என்று அசுரரை நம்ப வைத்துள்ளான்!’

4#12b. Sage Vyaasaa’s explanation

“Chandran fell in love with Taaraa, the wife of his guru, and he fell in the esteem of all the others. Bruhaspati fell in love with his brother’s pregnant wife and fell in the esteem of all the others.

The worldly life is a like a giant wheel. It keeps rotating nonstop with all the samsaaris bound on it. The Maayaa covers our intellect and disturbs our thinking power.

It deludes a man like the intoxicating drinks. To attain liberation form the bondage of samsaaraa or the worldly life, we need the grace of Devi who is The Maayaa deluding us.

Bruhaspati went to the asuras impersonating Sukran the guru of Asuras. He taught them asura gnaanam and reduced them to mere puppets in his hand.

The ten year period of nonstop indulgence with Jayanti came to an end. Sukran had to return to the asuraas – who he assumed were eagerly awaiting his return. He took leave of Jayanti promising her to come back to her soon.

He was shocked to find another Sukran in his place – teaching the asuras wrong things. He wondered at the power of destiny that had made him look like the impersonator while the impersonator looked like and behaved like the real Sukran and had gained the full confidence and trust of the Asuraas.”

2 (# 17b). திருமணங்கள்.

பதும கோமளையை, தெய்வத் தச்சன் மகளை,
வதுவை புரிந்துகொண்டான் அசுரன் சூரபத்மன்;

காமக் கிழத்தியர்களாகப் பல இளம்பெண்களை
கந்தருவர் முதலிய தேவ மாதரை மணந்தான்;

சிங்கமுகன் மணந்து கொண்டான் அழகிய
நங்கை விபுதையை, நமனின் மகளை;

தாரக அசுரன் மணந்துகொண்டான்
நிருதியின் மகள் நங்கை சவுரியை.

திருமணம் முடிந்ததும் திரும்பிச் சென்றனர்
அருமையான அவரவர் நகரங்களுக்கு;

படைகளையும் அனுப்பினான் நகர்களுக்கு;
அடைந்த ஆட்சியை நிலை நிறுத்துவதற்கு.

எட்டு திசைகளிலும் அமைக்கப் பட்டிருந்த
எட்டு நகர்களுக்கு சூரபத்மன் அனுப்பினான்

யானை முகம், குதிரை முகம், கொண்டவர்களை;
யாளி முகம், கரடி முகம் கொண்டவர்களை,

புலி முகம், பன்றி முகம் கொண்டவர்களை,
அரிமா முகம், மரையின் முகம் கொண்டவர்களை.

துர்குணன், தருமகோபன், சங்கபாலன், மகிஷன்
துர்முகன், சங்கபாலன், வக்கிரபாலன் மந்திரிகள்.

2 (# 17b). THE WEDDINGS.

Soorapadman married Viswakarma’s daughter Padma komalai.

He took many other beautiful damsels as his lovers.

Singa mukan married Naman’s daughter Vibuthai.

Taarakan married Nruthi’s daughter Sowri.

After the weddings they all went back to their cities.

Soorapadman sent his army to the cities, and other places to maintain his rule.

To the eight cities placed at the eight directions of his Veera mahendra puram, he sent the army chiefs with the faces of an elephant, a horse, a yali, a bear, a tiger, a boar, a lion and a wild cow.

Durgunan, Dharmagopan, Durmukhan, Sankhabaalan, Vakrabalan, and Mahishan were his ministers.

1c. குட்டு வழிபாடு

ஆத்திரம் வந்தது ராவணனுக்கு.
தந்திரம் செய்த அந்தணன் மீது.

குட்டினான் பொறி பறக்க அவனை;
வெட்டவெளியானது அந்த இடம்!

நொடியில் காணவில்லை சிறுவனை
பெருவடிவில் நின்றது கரிமுகநாதன்

எடுத்தார் துதிக்கையால் சுழற்றி!
அடித்தார் ஓங்கி நிலத்தின் மீது!

அனாயசமாகக் கிடைத்த அடியில்
விநாயகரிடம் கேட்டான் அபயம்.

“என் தலையில் குட்டினாயே நீ!
உன் தலையிலும் குட்டிக் கொள்!”

குட்டிய குட்டில் அவன் நெற்றிப்
பொட்டிலிருந்து கசிந்தது உதிரம்!

“தந்தைக்கு இங்கே இருக்க ஆசை;
எந்தை சொற்படிச் செய்தேன் இதை.

சன்னதியில் குட்டிக் கொள்பவர்கள்
நிம்மதி நிலைக்கும், நல்லது நடக்கும்”

குட்டு வழிபாடு தொடங்கியது இப்படியே.
விட்டுச் சென்றான் லிங்கத்தை ராவணன்.

#31c. The mode of prayer

RavaNan became wild with anger. He rapped the boy very hard on his head. The boy disappeared in a moment. Vinayaka stood there in a big form. Vinayaka lifted RavaNan in his trunk, swirled him round and threw him on the ground.

RavaNan felt shattered and prayed for protection. Vinayaka told him, “You rapped me hard on my head. Now rap on your own head as hard.” Ravanan rapped on his forehead so hard that it started bleeding.

“My father Lord Siva wanted to stay in this place. I just carried out his wish. Whoever raps the head in front of my statue, will have peace of mind and all good things will happen in his life.”

This is how the mode of prayer by rapping on the head started. RavaNan returned to Lanka leaving behind Gokarnar.

4#13a. கோபமும், சாபமும்

விரைந்து சென்றான் அசுரரிடம் சுக்கிரன்;
விவரித்து உரைத்தான் அமரரின் கபடத்தை,

“உண்மையில் அசுர குரு சுக்கிரன் நானே!
உங்கள் முன் நிற்பவன் வேடதாரி தேவகுரு!

நம்ப வேண்டாம் அவன் அறிவுரைகளை!
நம்ப வைத்து மோசம் செய்யும் வஞ்சகன்!”

திடுக்கிட்டனர் அசுரர்கள் இதைக் கேட்டும்;
அடுத்து அடுத்து நின்ற இருவரைக் கண்டும்!

மாறி மாறிப் பார்த்தனர் இருவரையும்;
மதி மயங்கினர் உண்மையை அறியாது!

தேவகுரு திசை திருப்பினான் அசுரர்களை,
“தேவகுரு திசை திருப்புகிறான் உங்களை !

எத்தனை காலமாக உங்களுடன் இருக்கிறேன்!
எத்தனைப் போல நுழைவது இவன் அல்லவா?

உபதேசம் பெற்று வந்தவனும் நானே – அதை
உபதேசம் உமக்குச் செய்கின்றவனும் நானே!”

மயங்கினர் இனிய மொழிகளில் அசுரர்கள்;
தயங்கினர் புதிய மனிதனை நம்புவதற்கு !

பொய் குருவை மெய் குருவென எண்ணினர்!
மெய் குருவைப் பொய் குருவென எண்ணினர்!

கள்ள குருவின் வாக்குச் சாதுரியத்தினால்
எள்ளி நகையாடினர் தம் முன் உள்ள குருவை.

4#13a. The anger and the curse

Sukran went the Asuraas and spoke to them, ” I am your kula guru Sukran. This man is an imposter. Do not trust him. Do not listen to his teachings. He is the treacherous guru of the cunning Devaas.”


The Asuraas were truly baffled by this declaration and saw two people who looked like identical twins standing in front of them. They could not identify their real guru in those two persons.

Bruhaspati made use of this confusion to delude them further. He told the Asuraas,” I have been living here with you all for many years. He is the one who tried to enter stealthily like a cat.

I am your real guru who got the upadesam from Lord Siva. I am your real guru who is teaching you what I had leaned from Lord Siva.”

The Asuras got more confused and trusted the imposter as the real guru and the real guru as an imposter. They made fun of the real Sukran and laughed at his audacity!

18. தேவர்களை ஏவுதல்.

முனிவரும், தேவரும் சூரன் ஆணைகளை
இனிதே புரிந்து திரிந்து கொண்டு இருந்தனர்;

“தேடிக் கடல் மீன்களைக் கொண்டு தருக!
தேவர்களிடம் ஆணை இட்டான் சூரபத்மன்;

மனம் நடுங்கி நாணம் அடைந்த போதிலும்,
தினம் கயல் கொண்டுவர உடன்பட்டனர்.

வருணனிடம் சொன்னான் தேவர்கோன்,
“தருவாய் கடல் மீன்களைப் பிடித்து!”

கடலில் உள்ள மீன்களை எல்லாம்
கரையில் குவித்தான் வருண தேவன்;

கயல்களைத் தூக்க எண்ணிய தேவர்கள்
கயல்களைக் கட்டினார்கள் பாம்புகளால்.

மீன் கட்டுக்களைச் சுமந்த தேவர்களை
மீண்டும் எள்ளி நகையாடினர் அவுணர்.

கயவன் சூரன் ஆணையிட்டான் மீண்டும்,
"கயற் பொதியை தினமும் கொண்டு தருக!”

2 (#18). Commanding the Devas.

The rushis and devas obeyed all the commands of Soorapadman to the letter.

One day Soorapadman ordered Indra to fetch the fish from the sea. The devas were ashamed of this task but had no other choice than to obey this order.

Indra asked Varuna to pile up the fish on the bank. Varuna piled up the fish on the bank. The devas made the fish into bundles by tying them up with the snakes.

When the asuras saw the devas carrying the bundles of fish, they had a hearty laugh. Soorapadman commanded them to bring fish everyday.

2a. குறுமுனி

கைலாச நாதனிடம் வரங்கள் பெற்று,
உல்லாச ஆட்சிசெய்தான் சூரபத்மன்;

அண்டங்கள் ஆயிரத்து எட்டையும் தன்
வெண் கொற்றக் குடைக் கீழ் அமர்ந்து.

ஒளிந்து வாழ்ந்தனர் இந்திரனும், சசியும்;
ஒற்றர்கள் தேடித் திரிந்தனர் அவர்களை!

மகேஸ்வரன் பூஜைக்குத் தேவையான
மலர்களை வளர்த்தனர் நந்தவனத்தில்.

மேகங்களைப் பணித்தான் சூரபத்மன்,
“தாகம் தீர்க்கும் நீரைப் பொழியாதீர்!”

வறட்சி பெருகியது, பயிர்கள் கருகின,
வாடி வதங்கின மலர்ச்செடி கொடிகள்.

செய்வது அறியாத இந்திரனும், சசியும்
தெய்வ வாக்கு ஒன்றைக் கேட்டனர்.

“வருந்தாதே இந்திரா மலர்களுக்காக!
வரும் ஒரு புனிதநதி இங்கு விரைவில்”

நாரதர் வந்தார் இந்திரனைச் சந்திக்க;
நாரதரிடம் கூறினர் சசியும், இந்திரனும்.

“சூரனுக்கு அஞ்சி வாழ்கின்றோம் யாம்,
மாறவேண்டும் இந்த நிலை விரைவில்!

ஆராதிக்கத் தேவை நறுமண மலர்கள்;
நீரின்றி வாடிப் போயிற்று மலர்வனம்!

நீர் அறியாதது என்று ஒன்றுமில்லை;
நீரை வரவழைக்க ஒரு வழி கூறுங்கள்”

“பொதிய மலை செல்கின்றார் குறுமுனி;
பெரு நதி உள்ளது சிறு கமண்டலத்தில்!

கைலாசநாதன் தந்த காவிரி நதி அது!
வையகம் தழைக்கும் நதி பாய்ந்தால்.

செய்ய வல்லவர் விநாயகர் ஒருவரே!
செய்வாய் வழிபாடு அவரருள் வேண்டி!”

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி
