16a. Thripuran

Bali conquered the earth in no time. The kings had heard of Bali’s strength and his boons. They surrendered unconditionally. Bali went to paataal. There was hardly and resistance and he conquered paataal. His next target was swargga.

All the asuras chose him as their king unanimously. He sent messengers to sawrgga. “If you surrender unconditionally, there will be no damage to life and property. If you choose to resist ans fight, Bali will overcome you in no time”

Indra became very angry and replied,” I will never surrender to Bali. If you want a war, than you will have it. Get your army ready for the battle”

Bali was beside himself with anger at the failure of the mission of the messengers. Both the sura and asura got ready for the war. Elephants fought with elephants. Horses were trotting around all the time.

The heads severed by the arrows flew in the air like balls. The din and the clash of the weapons shook the earth.

10d. திருமண வேள்வி.

“எல்லோரும் செய்யும் திருமண வேள்வியை
எல்லா உலகின் தலைவரும் செய்ய வேண்டும்.

திருமண வேள்வி செய்திட அனுமதி தாரும்!”
பெருமானிடம் வேண்டினான் பிரமதேவன்.

வேள்விப் பொருட்கள் வந்து சேர்ந்தன.
வேள்விச் சடங்குகள் செய்தான் பிரமன்,

வியாழன், சுக்கிரன், பிற முனிவர்களுடன்.
வீழ்ந்து வணங்கினர் மணமக்களை அனைவரும்.

வந்து வணங்கினாள் ரதி தேவி – ஈசன்
தந்த வாக்குறுதியை நினைவூட்டினாள்.

காமன் வந்து தோன்ற அருளினான் ஈசன்;
காமனோ தன் பிழை பொறுக்கவேண்டினான்.

“உருவுடன் இருந்து ரதியை மகிழ்விப்பாய்!
அருவமாக இருந்து உலகை ஆட்டிவைப்பாய்!”

வரம் தந்தார் மதனுக்கு, வாக்கு மாறாத ஈசன்,
வரத்தால் அகம், முகம் மகிழ்ந்தனர் ரதி மன்மதர்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

1 (#10 d) THE WEDDING HOMAM.

Brahma told Siva,”Sire! you must perform all the wedding rituals like every one else. Please give me permission for performing the wedding homam!” Siva agreed.

Brahma got all the things required fr the homam. He performed the homam attended by the gurus Bruhaspathi, Sukran and other rushis.

Everyone fell at the feet of the bride and groom.

Rathi who was waiting for the appropriate moment entered and fell at Siva’s feet. She reminded Him of His promise to bring back to life Manmathan.

Siva wished that Manmathan should appear before Him.
Manmathan begged for forgiveness.

Siva blessed him such that Manmathan will be visible only to Rathi Devi. To the rest of the world, he will be invisible but will have power on all living things.

Siva and Uma returned to Kailash. All the rushis, Devas and gaNAs went back to their places.

Siva and Uma sat on their throne. All the living creatures got back their interest in life and love.

Creation was restored and resumed.

3#16d. பொன்னும், மணியும்

அன்னை கேட்டாள், “ஏன் இத்தனை உற்சாகம்?”
அன்னையிடம் கூறவில்லை அற்புதக் கனவினை.

நந்தவனம் சென்றாள் தோழியர் குழுவுடன்;
நந்தவனத்தில் கொய்தனர் வண்ண மலர்களை.

அந்த வழியே விரைந்து சென்றான் அப்போது
அந்தணன் ஒருவன் எங்கிருந்தோ வந்தவன்.

“எந்த ஊரிலிருந்து வருகின்றீர்கள் ஐயா?”
சந்திரவதன சசிகலா அவனை வினவினாள்.

“வருகின்றேன் பரத்வாஜர் ஆசிரமத்திலிருந்து!”
இருந்தான் சுதர்சனன் அங்கு என்றறிவாள் அவள்.

தேவி கூறிய அழகனைப் பற்றி மேலும்
தெரிந்து கொள்ள விரும்பினாள் சசிகலா.

“ஆசிரமத்தில் உள்ள அதிசயத்தைக் கூறும்!” என,
“ஆசிரமத்தில் உள்ளது ஓர் அதிசயம் உண்மையே!

அஃறிணை அல்ல அந்த அதிசயம் தாயே!
உயர்திணை ஆவான் நம் போன்ற மனிதன்!

துருவ சிந்துவின் அருமை மகன் அவன்;
பருவ வயதினன்; சுதர்சனன் என்று பெயர்.

ராமனைப் போன்றே வீரம் செறிந்தவன்;
ராமனைப் போன்ற பொலிவு நிறைந்தவன்

கண்ட தும் காமுறுவர் ஆடவர், மகளிர்.
காணாத கண்கள் பயனற்ற மயில் கண்கள்.

சிலருக்குச் சிறந்திருக்கும் குண நலன்கள்;
சிலருக்குச் சிறந்திருக்கும் உருவ அழகு;

சிறந்துள்ளன உருவமும், குணமும் அவனுக்கு.
சிறந்துள்ளன உருவமும், குணமும் உனக்கும்.

ஒன்று சேர வேண்டும் நீங்கள் இருவரும்;
பொன்னும், மணியும் போல் பொலிவீர்கள்

நாயகன் ஆக வேண்டும் அவனே உனக்கு;
நாயகி ஆக வேண்டும் நீயே அவனுக்கு!”

3#16d. Gold and Diamond

The Queen, Sasikala’s mother, noticed the change in her daughter. She wanted to know what made her so happy on that day. But Sasikala did not reveal her unusual dream even to her mother.

Sasikala went to the flower garden with her friends. They were plucking the fragrant flowers. A Brahmin went by and Saikla asked him, “Where are you coming from sir?”

The Brahmin was coming from Sage Bharatwaaj’s ashram. Sasikala asked him, “Please tell me what is the most unusual thing in your ashram?”

The Brahmin replied to her, “Yes princess, we do have something very unusual in that ashram. It is not a thing but it is a human being.

He is Sudarsanan – the son of King Dhruva Sindhu. He is as handsome as Sri Rama himself. He is as valorous as Sri Rama himself.

Whosoever sets his or her eyes on him will be duly impressed by his port and presence. Those who have not seen him, live useless lives on the earth. Some people have excellent character and some others beauty and grace.

He has everything in him. He is handsome and good natured. You too are pretty and good natured. You must marry each other to make the most perfect pair on the earth, like a priceless diamond studded in solid gold.”

16b. திரிபுரன்

பலி உற்சாகப்படுத்தினான் படை வீரரை!
வலிமை பெற்றதோ விநாயகர் அருளால்!

இந்திரன் உடைத்தான் குதிரையின் கால்களை!
இந்திரன் மயங்கும்படி ஓங்கி அடித்தான் பலி.

மூவுலகையும் வெல்லும் வரம் படைத்தவன்
முன் நிற்க இயலாது மறைந்தான் இந்திரன்.

ஐராவதத்தில் அமர்ந்து வென்றான் பலி,
பிரமலோகம், வைகுண்டம், சுவர்க்கம்!

திக்விஜ்யம் முடித்துத் திரும்பினான் பலி;
திரிபுரத்தை அருளவேண்டினான் ஐயனை.

நூறு யோசனை அகலமும், உயரமும் கொண்ட
மூன்று கோட்டைகள் வந்தன வானிலிருந்து.

மகன்கள் மூவரைத் தோற்றுவித்தான் பலி
மனத்திலிருந்து, தன் மனம் விரும்பியபடி.

வஜ்ஜிர தம்ஷ்டிரன், வீமகாயன், காலகூடன்
விரும்பித் தோற்றுவித்த மகன்கள் மூவர்.

சுக்கிலம் ஆனது அந்த இரும்புக் கோட்டை.
சுபிலம் ஆனது அந்த வெள்ளிக் கோட்டை.

சுவர்த்தி ஆனது அந்தத் தங்கக் கோட்டை;
சுரக்ஷணை கூடியது இந்தத் திரிபுரங்களால்!

சண்டன் ஆண்டான் சத்திய லோகத்தை – பிர
சண்டன் ஆண்டான் வைகுண்ட லோகத்தை.

மகிஷி ஈன்றாள் பலியின் மகன் மதனை.
ஏகி ஒளிந்தனர் தேவர்கள் கயிலையில்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

16b. Thripuran

Bali encouraged his soldiers to fight better. They were also stronger due to the blessings of Vinayaka. Indra broke the front legs of the horse on which Bali was riding. Bali jumped down and hit Indra hard so as to make him swoon.

A terrible one to one war followed between Indra and Bali. Indra was no match to Bali and he quietly disappeared from the battle field and escaped to Kailash.

Bali entered the heaven seated on Indra’s four tusked white elephant Airaavat. There absolutely no resistance in swarga. Then he went to Satyalokam and Vaikuntam. They too fell without any resistance. All the Deva had taken refuge in Kailash, since lord Siva was the only person who could win over Bali.

After the completion of the digvijayam, Bali returned to the earth. He requested Vinayaka to grant him the the three metal forts promised earlier. Bali created three sons out of his mind with sankalpam. Vajradamshtran, Beemakaayan and Kaalakootan were the three sons.

The three metals forts flew down from the sky. The iron fort was named as Sukla, the silver fort as Subila and the gold fort as Suwarthi. Chandan ruled over Satyalogam and Prachandan ruled over Vaikuntam as Bali’s representatives.

Bali’s wife gave birth to a son named Madhan. All the Deva had taken refuge in Kailash by then.

11a. முருகன் தோற்றம்

நாட்கள் பல கடந்தும் நம்பி அவதரிக்கவில்லை.
நான்முகன், இந்திரன், திருமால், தேவர் குழுமினர்.

“பிறையணி நாதனிடமும், பார்வதிதேவியிடமும்,
முறை இட்டு வேண்டிக்கொள்வதே ஒரே வழி!

நல்ல சகுனம் நோக்கி நாம் சென்றால் ஒழிய
செல்லும் காரியம் வெல்ல வாய்ப்பு இல்லை.”

வாயு தேவனைப் பணித்தார்கள் அவர்கள்,
யாது செய்கின்றான் பிரான் என்று கண்டு வர.

“காமனையே எரித்த கண்கள் உருவமற்றதான
காற்றை என் செய்யுமோ?” என அஞ்சினான்.

கயிலையை அடைந்து நீராடி, தென்றலாகிப்
பயின்றான் நடை, மலர் மணத்தைச் சுமந்தபடி.

நந்தியின் அனுமதியின்றி கயிலைமலையில்
மந்த மாருதமும் நுழைய முடியாது அன்றோ!

வாயுவைத் தடுத்து, அதட்டி நந்தி விரட்டக்
காயும் சூரியன் முன் பனியாகிவிட்டான் வாயு.

“தேவர்கள் பிரானை தரிசிக்க விரும்பி என்னை
ஏவினர் வேத முதல்வனைக் கண்டு வரும்படி.

சூரபத்மனின் அடிமையான நாள் முதல் – என்
வீரமும், விவேகமும் அழிந்து விட்டன போலும்!”

“உன்னைப் பிழைக்கவிட்டேன், நீ ஓடிப்போ!”
இன்னுயிர் பிழைத்த காற்று கடுகி மறைந்தான்.

மேரு மலையில் இருந்த தேவர்களிடம் சென்று
கூறினான் கயிலையில் நிகழ்ந்தவற்றை எல்லாம்.

1 (# 11 A). THE BIRTH OF MURUGAN.

Many days rolled away but Siva’s son was yet to be born! All the Devas including Brahma, Vishnu and Indra met on Mount Meru.

“We can’t wait any longer. We have to meet Siva and Uma in person and tell them our grievances. Only if we approach them at an appropriate time, our task will become easy.”

They ordered VAyu to go to Kailash and find out whether the time was ripe for their visit.

“Siva had burned Manmathan who had the most lovely body. I am already formless and invisible! What will become of me?” VAyu worried. But he had no choice but to give in.

He reached Kailash, took a bath, loaded himself with the fragrance of the flowers and tried to enter Kailash as Manda MArutham.

But the ever vigilant Nandhi stopped him, scolded him and ordered him to run off as fast as he could-if he wanted to remain alive.

VAyu told him the purpose of his visit but in vain. VAyu was forced to return to mount Meru and relate the failure of his mission to the Devas there.

3#17a. சசிகலையின் காதல்

அந்தணனின் பேச்சைக் கேட்ட பிறகு சசிகலை
அதிகக் காதல் கொண்டாள் அந்த சுதர்சனனிடம்.

இரவு நெருங்கவே சென்று விட்டான் அந்தணன்;
விரகம் கொண்ட சசிகலை உடல் வாட்டமுற்றாள்.

அந்தரங்கத் தோழியை அழைத்துச் சொன்னாள்,
“சுந்தர புருஷனைக் கண்டதில்லை கண்களால் நான்.

உருவகித்தேன் அந்தணன் வர்ணனையால் அவனை;
உணருகின்றேன் நேரில் கண்டது போலவே அவனை.

வருத்துகின்றன மன்மதனின் பாணங்கள் என் உடலை
வருத்துகின்றது அவன் பிரிவுத் துயர் என் உள்ளத்தை.

தவிக்கின்றேன் அவனுடன் கூடி மகிழ்ந்திட;
தகிக்கின்றது குளிர் நிலவொளி நெருப்பென.

எரிகின்றது உடலில் பூசிய சந்தனம் நஞ்சாக;
தெரிகின்றன மலர்மாலைகள் நச்சரவங்களாக.

தேடிச் செல்லலாம் அவன் இருக்கும் இடத்தை;
தடுக்கின்றன அச்சம், மடம், நாணம் போன்றவை.

தந்தை திருமணம் செய்து வைப்பாரா என்னை
அந்த சுகுமாரனுக்கு என்பதையும் அறியேன்!

நாடாளும் மன்னர்கள் பலர் இருக்கையில்
காடாளும் ஏகாங்கியுடன் என் திருமணமா?

மனத்தை இவனிடம் பறி கொடுத்து விட்டபின்
மணத்தைப் புரியமுடியுமா வேறு ஒருவனுடன்?”

தனியன், தனம், ஜனம் இல்லாதவன் சுதர்சனன்
எனினும் உருகினாள் சசிகலை அவனை எண்ணி.

அறியவில்லை சுதர்சனன் இது பற்றி சிறிதும்.
இருந்தான் தேவியின் தியானத்தில் எப்போதும்.

3#17a. Sasikala in love.

Sasikala loved Sudarsanan all the more after listening to the brahmin coming from Sage Bharadwaaj’s ashram. The brahmin went away before the night fell. Sasikala felt the pangs of love for her unseen lover.

She spoke to her dearest friend. “I have not seen Sudrsanan but I feel I already know him very well. I want to be with him but I can’t. The arrows shot Cupid hurt me badly.

The cool moon light burns my skin like a roaring fire. The sandal paste applied to my body feels like a coating of deadly poison. The garlands made of fresh flowers appear like a cluster of poisonous snakes.

I can go looking for him but the feminine virtues stop me from doing that. Will my father the king agree to get me married to Sudarsanan?

I am not very sure. When there are so many worthy kings from whom I can select my husband, will my father allow my wedding with a prince living in the forest who has neither a country nor men nor riches ? I can’t lose my heart to a prince and marry another. “

Sasikala was tortured by her pangs of love and her doubts about her future. Sudarsanan was completely unaware of all these and spent his time in meditating upon Devi wholeheartedly.

16c. திரிபுரன்

கயிலையில் பதுங்கி இருந்த தேவர்கள் – தம்
இயலாமையை இயம்பினர் நாரத முனியிடம்.

“விநாயகர் அருள் அளித்துள்ளது வலிமை.
விதியும், நாரணனும் வெல்ல இயலாதார்!

அரன் மட்டுமே அழிக்க வல்லவர் பலியை.
வரம் தந்த கணநாதன் காட்டுவார் வழியை.

அபாயம் செய்யும் அசுரனை வெல்லுகின்ற
உபாயம் இருக்கும் என்பது மட்டும் உறுதி!”

ஏகாக்ஷரத்தை உடனே உபதேசித்தார் நாரதர்,
ஏகாக்ஷரத்தை ஓதத் தொடங்கினர் தேவர்கள்,

வித்தக வினாயகனைச் சித்தத்தில் வைத்து
மொத்தக் கூட்டமும் ஏகாக்ஷரம் ஜபித்தது.

கோடி சூரியப் பிரகாசத்துடன் தோன்றினார்,
வாடிய தேவர்கள் முன் வேழமுக நாதன்;

நான்கு கரங்கள், நவரத்ன அணிமணிகள்
மூன்று கண்கள், முன் வளைந்த துதிக்கை.

“பலிக்குத் தந்தீர் பலமும் வலிமையையும்,
பலிக்கு அஞ்சி ஒளிந்துள்ளோம் நாங்கள்!

வாழ்வையும் வளத்தையும் தந்த நீரே
தாழ்வையும் அழிவையும் தரவேண்டும்”

“கடும் தவம் செய்து வரம் பெறுபவர்கள்
கொடும் செயல்கள் செய்வது வழக்கம்.

வரத்தினால் அடைவர் வளமான வாழ்வு;
வரத்தினால் அடைவர் அளவற்ற மமதை!

கயிலாய நாதரே வெல்ல வல்லவர்- நீவீர்
கயிலைக்குச் சென்று விண்ணம் செய்வீர்

பலியின் அழிவுக்கான வழியினை நான்
பல நாட்கள் முன்பே வகுத்தது உண்மை.

பலியின் அழிவுக்கான முயற்சியை நான்
எளிமையாக துவக்கி வைக்கிறேன் இன்று”

16c. Thripuran

The Deva who were hiding in Kailash told Narada about their sufferings. “Vinayaka has given Bali special boons. Even Vishnu and Brahma can’t destroy him. Only Siva can destroy Bali. I am sure lord Vinayaka will show you the way. Pray to him” Narada taught them ekaaksharam and the Deva started chanting it concentrating on Vinayaka.

Vinayaka appeared in front of them with the brilliance of ten million suns shining together. He had four arms, jewels made of nava ratna, three eyes and the vakra thuNdam.

“Lord! You have given boons to Bali making him invincible. Only you can bring about his destruction. We are helpless!” The Deva pleaded to Vinayaka.

“Those who do severe penance and get boons later on become arrogant because of their boons and start troubling everyone else. Only Lord Siva can put an end to Bali. Please go and pray to him in Kailash. In the meantime, I well start doing things which will speed up Bali’s destruction” Vinayaka promised the Deva.

11b. தேவர் விண்ணப்பம்.

தேவர்கள் வருந்தினர் வாயுவின் மொழி கேட்டு;
“யாவரும் ஒரு விண்ணப்பம் செய்வோம் வாரீர்!”

மேருவை நீங்கி கயிலைமலையை அடைந்தனர்- “எம்
வருகையைப் பெருமானுக்கு அறிவிக்க வேண்டும்!”

வரச் சொன்ன பெருமானிடம் முறையிட்டனர்.
“தர வேண்டும் வீரத் திருமகன் குறை தீர்க்க!”

“வருந்த வேண்டாம் தேவர்களே வறிதே நீங்கள்!
திருமகன் தோன்றும் நேரம் கனிந்து விட்டது!”

ஐந்து புதிய திருமுகங்கள் தோன்றச் செய்தார்;
ஆறு முகங்களில் ஆறு அழகிய நுதற்கண்கள்!

அவற்றில் தோன்றின ஆறு தீப் பொறிகள்!
அவை விரிந்து, பரந்து வெப்பத்தை உமிழ்ந்தன!

ஓய்ந்துவிட்டது காற்று! வற்றிவிட்டன கடல்கள்!
ஒடுங்கியது நாணிய ஊழித்தீயும்! பிளந்தது நிலம்;

நெகிழ்ந்தன கல்மலைகள்; அஞ்சின உயிரினங்கள்;
உமிழ்ந்த வெப்பத்தால் அஞ்சினாள் உமையும்!

படர்ந்த பொறிகள் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கவில்லை.
உடனே தணிக்க வேண்டினர் கடும் வெப்பத்தை;

ஐந்து முகங்களையும் மறைத்த ஈசன் முன்போல்
இந்து அணிந்த ஒரு முகத்தினன் ஆனான்.

தீப்பொறிகளைத் தன்னிடம் திரும்ப அழைத்தான்.
தீக் கடவுளிடமும் காற்றிடமும் சொன்னான்,

“இருவரும் இப்பொறிகளைத் தாங்கிச்சென்று
பெருகும் கங்கை நதியில் சேர்க்க வேண்டும்!”

“நுதற் கண்ணில் தோன்றிய தீப்பொறிகளை
முதலில் தாங்கும் ஆற்றல் வேண்டுமே!”

தீங்கு நேராமல் தீப்பொறிகளைத் தாங்கத்
திருவருள் புரிந்தான் கருணைக் கடல் ஈசன்.

1 (# 11B) THE REQUEST OF DEVAS.

Devas worried about the failure of VAyu’s mission. They decided to take a chance and go to KailAsh in person to meet Siva and Uma.

They left Mount Meru and reached mount KailAsh. They requested Nandi to inform Siva of their visit.

Siva called them in and they spoke in unison, “Sire! Where is the valorous son who will rid us of all our troubles?”

Siva replied to them.,”Now is the right time for the son to be born. Do not worry any more!”

He assumed five new faces. Along with His face, He now had six faces. There was a third eye in each of those six faces. A spark appeared from each of them.

These six sparks were so hot that everybody started running aimlessly. The air stopped moving. The oceans dried up.

Agni Devan got frightened by these sparks. Mountains softened. All the living things were scared. Uma also go frightened and ran away in a hurry.

Since the sparks were benign they did not harm anyone. Siva decided to reduce the intensity of the sparks and called them back to him.

He made his extra five faces disappear and was seen with one face adorned by the crescent moon.

He ordered Agni and VAyu to carry the sparks and deposit them in the river Ganges. She will transport them to Saravanap Poigai.

Agni and VAyu wondered how anyone could even touch those sparks. Siva blessed them with the power to bear the heat of the sparks and sent them on their mission.

3#17b. சுயம்வரம்

மஹாதேவி விஷ்ணுமாயை தோன்றினாள்
மஹாலக்ஷ்மியாக சுதர்சனனின் கனவினில்.

வந்தான் ச்ருங்கிபேரபுரத்து வேடராஜன்;
தந்தான் பல அரிய பெரிய பரிசுகளை.

திரவியங்கள், வீரக்கொடி – நான்கு
புரவிகள் பூட்டிய ரதம், பதாகைகள்.

ஆசிகள் தந்தனர் ஆசிரம முனிவர்கள்;
ஆசிகள் தந்தாள் பிரபஞ்ச மாயாதேவி.

“உதவ முன் வந்தான் வேடராஜன் இன்று.
உன் வசப்படும் உன் ரஜ்ஜியம் விரைவில்.”

மனோரமை மகிழ்ந்தாள் முனிவர் மொழிகளால்.
மஹா தபஸ்விகளின் வாக்குப் பொய்யாகுமா?

அந்த ரத்தத்தில் ஏறி சுதர்சனன் செல்கையில்,
மந்திர பலத்தால் ஒரு படையும் காட்சி தந்தது.

மந்திரத்தின் மஹிமையை உணர்ந்த சுதர்சனன்
முன்னிலும் அதிகமாக தேவியை தியானித்தான்.

மன்மத பாணங்களால் வருந்திய சசிகலையோ
முன்னிலும் அதிகமாக பிரேமித்தாள் அவனை.

மகளின் மாற்றத்தை உணர்ந்தான் சுபாஹு.
மகளின் சுயம்வரத்தை தானே நிச்சயித்தான்.

மண்ணுலக வேந்தர்களின் சுயம்வரம்
மூன்று வகைப் பட்டிருந்தன அப்போது.

மனத்தைக் கவர்ந்தவனை மணாளனாக
மணப்பெண் வரிப்பது இச்சா சுயம்வரம்.

பந்தயத்தில் வென்று மணமகளை மன்னன்
சொந்தம் ஆக்கிக் கொள்வது பந்தய சுயம்வரம்.

வீரத்தை நிலை நாட்டிக் கன்னிகையைக் கவருவது

7#17b. Swayamvaram

Vishnu Maayaa appeared to Prince Sudarsanan as Lakshmi Devi. The chief of the hunters in Sringabera puram became a friend and gave several rich gifts to Sudarsanan such as a chariot with four horses, the flags and several other riches.

The sages gave him their blessings.They said, “The chief of the hunters has become your friend now. You will get back your father’s kingdom very soon”

Manorama became vary happy since the words spoken by the sages always proved to be true. Whenever Sudarsanan rode on the chariot he appeared to be surrounded by a big army of his own. He realized the effect of the Chanting of Devi’s mantra. He did japam more sincerely than before.

Sasikala was suffering from the pangs of separation. Her father noticed the changes in her behavior and arranged for her swayamvarm.

In those days swayavarams were of three different types.
 In Ichchaa swayamvaram the bride chose her own husband from among the kings who had assembled.

In the second type, the winner in the contest arranged by the parents of the princess, married her.

In the third type the bride was kidnapped by the prospective husband and he married her after defeating the opponents in a fight.

16d. கலாதரன்

தேவர்கள் தேடிச் சென்றனர் சிவபிரானை;
வேழமுகன் தேடிச் சென்றான் திரிபுரனை.

அந்தணன் வடிவில் வந்த கணபதியை
அழைத்து உபசரித்தான் திரிபுரன் பலி.

“மூவுலகாளுகின்றேன் ஒரு குடைக் கீழ்!
பூவுலகினில் தங்கள் தேவை என்ன?” என;

“அசுரர் அரசே! அந்தணன் கலாதரன் நான்.
ஆச்சரியம் அடைந்தேன் உன் புகழ் கேட்டு!

ஆனைமுகனின் பக்தன் ஆவாய் நீ – நானும்
ஏனைய தெய்வங்களைத் தொழுவதில்லை!

கைலாய நாதன் ஆராதித்து வருகின்றான்
வையகத்தில் காண இயலாத மூர்த்தியை!

சிந்தாகுலம் தீர்ப்பதில் தன்னிகரற்றது அது!
சிந்தாமணி விநாயகர் எனப் பெயர் பெற்றது.

விழைந்தேன் அந்த மூர்த்தியினைப் பெற்றிட.
விரைந்தேன் இங்கு உன் உதவியைப் பெற்றிட

உன்னால் அதனைப் பெற்றுத் தர இயலுமா?
என்னால் அதனை ஆராதிக்க இயலுமா?”

“வல்லமையில் ஐயம் கொண்டுளீர் ஐயா!
சொல்லியும் விட்டீர் அதை இங்ஙனம்.”

“வல்லமையில் ஐயம் இல்லை திரிபுரா!
உள்ளபடி நீயும் ஒரு விநாயகர் பக்தனே!

கண்டவுடன் காதல் கொண்டு, மூர்த்தியை
வேண்டும் உனக்கு என்று கூறிவிட்டால்?”

இடியோசை போல நகைத்தான் அசுரன்!
நடுங்கியது அரசவை அவ்வொலியில்.

“உடனே தருவிகின்றேன் அந்த மூர்த்தியை.
இடம் தருவேன் இங்கேயே தங்குவதற்கு!”

“அருகிலேயே தங்கியுள்ளேன் நான் இப்போது;
வருவேன் வேண்டும்போது மீண்டும் இங்கே”

16d. Kalaadharan

The Deva went to meet lord Siva and Vinayaka went to meet Bali. Bali welcomed the young Brahmin who was in fact Vinayaka himself in a disguise.

“What is that you wish to possess sir? I have the three worlds under my rule and can get you anything you wish to have!” Bali told the Brahmin.

“I am a Brahmin named as Kalaadharan. I am impressed by your greatness. I heard that you worship only Vinayaka. I too do not worship any other God.

Lord Siva has a Chintaamani Vinayaka statue. It has the power to put an end to all our worries. I wish to do aaraadhanaa to that statue. Can you get it for me?”

“You still have doubts in my powers. You have let it out this way. ” Bali told Kalaadharan who replied thus:

“I have no doubts in your power. But you may wish to keep the statue with you once you set your eyes on it!”

Bali laughed like thunderclaps and the whole sabha reverberated. “I shall get that statue for you right now. Please stay with me in the palace till then!” Bali told Kalaadharan.

“I am already staying nearby. I can come here at anytime I wish to.” Kalaadharan told Bali and left the palace.

11c. சரவணப் பொய்கை.

அக்னியும், வாயுவும் வணங்கினர் பிரானை.
அக்னிப் பொறிகளைச் சுமந்தான் வாயு.

திருமால் முதலானோர் பின் தொடர்ந்தனர்.
ஒரு நாழிகைப்பொழுதில் களைத்துவிட்டான்!

அக்னிப் பொறிகளைச் சுமந்தான் அக்னிதேவன்!
அக்னியே அக்னியைச் சுடுமா? சுட்டது அங்கே.

வருத்தத்தைப் பொறுத்துக் கொண்டு அவன்
திருத்தமாகப் பொறிகளை கங்கையில் சேர்த்தான்.

வற்றாத கங்கையும் வற்றி விடுமோ வெப்பத்தில்?
சிற்றாறு போல் ஓடிச் சேர்த்து விட்டது கங்கை,

ஆறு தீப் பொறிகளையும் ஒரு பழுதும் இன்றி
சரவணப் பொய்கையில், இமயமலைச் சாரலில்.

காவல் நின்றனர் தேவர்கள்அப்பொய்கைக்கு.
ஆவல் மீறியது வீர சிவகுமாரனைக் கண்டிட.

உருவமும் அருவமும் ஆகி, ஆதி அந்தமில்லாத
திருவுடலே ஒளிப்பிழம்பாக அவன் தோன்றினான்.

ஓராறு திரு முகங்கள்; பன்னிரு திருக் கரங்கள்;
ஈராறு விழிகள்; இவ் உலகை உய்விக்க வந்தான்.

அரவணைத்து அனைதுலகையும் ஆளப்பிறந்தான்.
சரவணப் பொய்கையில் அவதரித்தான் அவன்.

விண்ணில் ஒலித்தன தேவ துந்துபிகள்,
மண்ணில் மகிழ்ந்தன உயிரினங்கள்;

மலர்கள் சொரிந்தன; மறைகள் முழங்கின;
குலவும் குமரன் இருந்ததோ தாமரையின் மீது!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

1 ( # 11 C ) SARAVANAP POIGAI.

Agni and Vayu took leave of Siva. Vishnu and other Devas followed them. Vayu carried the sparks for a muhoortham and was totally exhausted.

Now it was Agni’s turn to carry the sparks. Even though he himself was the god of fire, he had difficulty in carrying the sparks. He deposited the sparks in Ganges as ordained by Siva.

Ganges got partly dried up but transported the sparks to Saravanap Poigai. All the Devas stood around the Poigai, waiting for a glimpse of the great Sivakumar – their Saviour and protector.

The baby appeared in the Poigai. He had six faces, twelve hands and twelve eyes. His body was one. Dundubis were blown by Devas.

The whole world felt relieved and reassured.Vedas were chanted and Sivakumar was siting on a lotus flower.

3#17c. அரசன் அறிவுரை

சுயம்வரவிழா ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்தான் சுபாஹு;
சபா மண்டபங்களை நிர்மாணித்தனர் சிற்பிகள்.

தோரணங்கள், ஆசனங்கள், அலங்காரம் என
ஏராளமாகச் செலவிட்டான் திரவியங்களை.

தன்னிடம் கேளாமலேயே தந்தை ஏற்பாடுகளைத்
தன்னிச்சையாகச் செய்வது கண்டாள் சசிகலை.

அந்தரங்கத் தோழியை அழைத்தாள் சசிகலை
தன் அந்தரங்கத்தை உணர்த்தினாள் அவளுக்கு.

“வரித்துவிட்டேன் சுதர்சனனை மணளனாக
புரியேன் திருமணம் வேறு ஒரு அரசனோடு!

அறிவிப்பாய் என் உள்மனக் கருத்தினை
அரசன் அரசியர் உணரும்படி!” என்றாள்.

“தேவி ஆணையிட்டாள் கனவில் வந்து
தேவி பக்தன் அவனையே மணக்குமாறு.”

தக்க தருணம் நோக்கி இருந்தாள் தோழி;
மிக்க கவனமாக எடுத்து உரைத்தாள்.

மனநிலையை அறிந்த அரசி – மகளின்
மனநிலையை அறிவித்தாள் அரசனுக்கு.

“அறியாத சிறுமி நம் மகள் சசிகலை – ஏதும்
தெரியாமல் பேசுகின்றாள் வாழ்வைப் பற்றி!

கூறியவள் அவள் என்பதால் தோழியும்
கூறுகிறாள் இவற்றை உனக்கு விரிவாக.

பெரிது படுத்தி இதை நீயும் என்னிடம்
பரிந்து உரைக்கின்றாய் அல்லவா ராணி?

தன்னந் தனியனாகக் காடாள்கிறான் சுதர்சனன்
தருவேனா பெண்ணை ஏதும் இல்லாதவனுக்கு?

வருவார்கள் அத்தனை தேசத்து அரசர்களும்!
வரிக்கட்டும் சிறந்த ஒருவனைக் கணவனாக!”
