# 64 (a). மூன்று சாட்சிகள்.

தனவான் வணிகன் வாழ்ந்து இருந்தது,
மனம் மகிழும் காவிரிப்பூம்பட்டிணத்தில்;

எல்லாம் இருந்தும் ஒரு குறை இருந்தது,
செல்லம் கொஞ்ச ஒரு குழந்தை இல்லை.

இல்லாளுடன் நற்பணிகள் செய்தான்,
நல்ல மகள் ஒருத்தி வந்து பிறந்தாள்;

வணிகனின் தங்கை மகன் ஒருவன்
வாழ்ந்து வந்தான் மதுராபுரியில்.

"முறை மாப்பிள்ளைக்கே தன் மகளை,
முறைப்படி மணம் செய்விக்கவேண்டும்.

திருமணம் ஆகிவிட்டது மருமகனுக்கு;
ஒரு பாதகமும் இல்லை அதனால்!

சொந்தம் விட்டுப் போகக் கூடாது,
பந்தம் விலகக் கூடாது!" என்பான்.

திடீரென இறந்துவிட்டான் வணிகன்,
உடன் இறந்தாள் கற்புடை மனைவி.

ஒரே நாளில் யாருமே இல்லாத
ஒரு அனாதையாகி விட்டாள் மகள்;

நண்பர்கள் ஓலை அனுப்பினர் அவனுக்கு,
அன்புடன் அவளை ஆதரிக்கவேண்டி!

மாமன் மறைவுக்கு வருந்திய அவன்,
மாமன் இல்லம் சென்று உதவினான்.

மதுரையில் திருமணம் செய்வதாக
முதியவர்கள் முன்பு முடிவானது.

பொன்னும் பொருளும், பிறவும்
முன்னம் மதுரைக்கு அனுப்பினான்;

நடைப்பயணம் தொடங்கினர் அவர்கள்,
நாள் ஒன்றுக்கு ஒன்றரைக் காத தூரம்.

திருப் புறம்பியம் என்னும் ஸ்தலத்தில்,
இரவு தங்கினர் வழியில் ஒருநாள்;

திருக்கிணற்று நீரில் நீராடினான்,
திருக்கோவிலில் லிங்க தரிசனம்;

அன்னம் உண்டது வன்னி மரத்தடியில்,
அண்ணல் கோவில்படியே தலையணை.

# 64 (A). THE THREE WITNESSES.

A rich merchant lived in Kaavirip poom pattinam. He had everything a person could desire but not a child. He and his wife did many good karmas and as a result a very pious daughter was born to them.

The merchant had a nephew living in Madurai. He wanted to marry his daughter to him- even though he was already married. In those days, rich men used to have more than one wife.

Suddenly the merchant died. His wife also died along with him. The poor girl became an orphan. The friends of the family sent a message to the nephew and requested him to marry the girl.

He came there immediately and consoled her. They decided to get married as soon as they reached Madurai. All her earthly belongings were sent to Madurai and they too left by walk.

One night they stayed in Thiruppurambiam for the night. The nephew took bath in the well water, worshiped the Sivalingam, ate food under a tree and slept with the step of the temple as his pillow.

# 64 (b). சம்பந்தரின் சம்பந்தம்.

அண்ணல் கோவில்படி தலையணையாக
அயர்ந்து உறங்கிய அந்த மருமகனை,
விஷ நாகம் ஒன்று வீணே தீண்டிவிட,
விஷம் தலைக்கேறி மாண்டுபோனான்.

செய்வது அறியாமல் அழுதனர்,
ஐயன் அருள் வேண்டித் தொழுதனர்;
"மணம் கூட முடியவில்லை, அதற்குள்!"
மனம் உடைந்து அழுதாள் அவள்.

கலவர ஒலிகளைக் கேட்டு விரைந்தார்,
தலத்தில் தங்கி இருந்த ஞானசம்பந்தர்;
கண்களின் அமுதப் பார்வையால் அந்தப்
பெண்ணின் கண்ணீரைத் துடைத்தார் அவர்.

உறங்கி எழுபவன் போல் எழுந்தான்,
பிறவியை மீண்டும் பெற்ற மருமகன்;
"சீலவதி இவள் கரம் பற்றுவாய் உடனே!
கால தாமதம் வீணே செய்வது எதற்கு?"

"பெரியவர் சாட்சியின்றி எங்கேனும் ஒரு
திருமணம் நிகழ முடியுமா கூறுங்கள்?
இங்கு நான் இவளை மணந்துகொண்டால்,
எங்கள் மணத்துக்கு யார் சாட்சி?" என்றான்.

"வன்னி மரமும், இந்தத் தண்ணீர்க் கிணறும்,
அண்ணலின் லிங்கமும் ஆகும் சாட்சிகள்! .
பெண்ணின் துயரைத் துடைத்து அருள்வாய்!
கன்னியை மணம் புரிந்து கொள்ளுவாய்!"

சொன்னபடியே செய்தான் அந்த மருமகன்,
அன்னப் பேடையும் ஆனந்தம் அடைந்தாள்,
மதுரையை அடைந்தனர் புது மணமக்கள்,
புதுமண வாழ்வைத் தொடங்கினர் அவர்கள்.

மூத்த மனைவியும் ஏற்றாள் இவளை,
முத்துப் போன்ற மகன் பிறந்தான்;
வணிகம் நடந்தது நல்ல முறையில்,
வாழ்வே இன்பமானது அவர்களுக்கு!

# 64 (B). ASSOCIATION WITH SAMBANDHAR.

When the nephew was fast asleep, a cobra bit him and he died. The girl felt as if struck by a bolt from the blue.They were to be married soon. In the middle of the night and in the middle of nowhere, they could do nothing but pray for mercy and cry.

Thiru gnaana sambandhar was halting nearby. He heard the cries of despair and reached there. He gazed at the young man and prayed for Siva's divine grace. The man got up as if from deep sleep. The group became joyous.

Gnaana sambandhar listened to their story and advised the man to marry the girl then and there. Good acts should not be delayed unnecessarily. The man said, "I can't marry her without any witnesses"

Gnaana sambandhar replied," This Siva lingam, this tree and this well will be your three witnesses."

The man agreed and their marriage took place. The first wife accepted the second one without much fuss. So they started a happy life. Business was good. Soon a healthy son was born to them. The young girl lived happily like Lakshmi Devi.

# 64 (c). குடுமிபிடிச் சண்டை.

மூத்தவள் மகன்கள் மிகக் கொடியவர்கள்;
முழுமனததோடு ஏற்கவில்லை இளையவனை;
வாக்குவாதங்களும், சண்டை சச்சரவுகளும்,
வளரலாயின அடிக்கடி அம்மக்கள் இடையே.

சிறுவர்களின் சண்டை சிறிது நேரமே!
பெரியவர்கள் நுழைந்தால் பெரிதாகும்,
சிறுவர் பூசலில் அன்னையர் நுழைந்ததால்,
பெரும் புயலில் சென்று நின்றது அது!

"நீ யார்? எந்த ஊர்? என்ன குலம்?
நீலி நீ ஒரு காமக் கிழத்தி அல்லவா?
என் திருமணத்துக்கு அக்னி சாட்சி.
உன் திருமணத்துக்கு யார் சாட்சி?"

"சம்பந்தர் பெருமானின் ஆணைப்படி
எங்கள் திருமணம் நடந்தது உண்மை;
திருப்புறம்பியத்தில் உள்ள கிணறும்,
சிவலிங்கமும், வன்னி மரமும் சாட்சி."

"நல்ல சாட்சிகள் வைத்துள்ளாய் நீ!
நாப் பேச இயலாத மூன்று பொருட்கள்!
இங்கு வந்து நிரூபிக்கச் சொல்லுவாய்
அங்கு இருக்கும் உன் சாட்சிகளை!"

எள்ளி நகையாடினாள் மூத்தவள்,
உள்ளம் குமுறினாள் இளையவள்;
"கள்ளம் இல்லா என் வாழ்க்கைக்குக்
களங்கம் கற்பிக்கின்றாள் சிவனே!

தாய், தந்தை என யாரும் இல்லை!
சேய் எனக்கு நீயே ஒரு கதி ஆவாய்.
மாமனாக வந்து வழக்கு உரைத்தாயே!
மாமன் மகள் என்னையும் காப்பாற்று!"

பொற்றாமரைக் குளத்தில் நீராடினாள்,
நற்றாள் மலர்களைப் பணிந்தாள்;
வன்னியும், கிணறும், சிவலிங்கமும் - என்
இன்னுயிர் காத்திட இங்கு வரவேண்டும்."

பெருமான் அருளால் அவை மூன்றும்,
திருக்கோவிலுக்கு வடகிழக்கு திசையில்,
உடனே முளைத்து நின்றன அங்கே!
அடைந்தனர் வியப்பு அவற்றைக் கண்டவர்.

நிந்தனை செய்தனர் மூத்த மனைவியை ,
வந்தனை செய்தனர் இளைய மனைவியை,
"நிந்திக்க வேண்டாம் நீங்கள் இவர்களை!
சிந்திப்பீர்கள் இவர்கள் செய்த நன்மையை!

கற்பின் திறத்தை உலகறியச் செய்த ஒரு
பொற்புடைய மங்கை இவரே அன்றோ?
தாயற்ற எனக்குத் தாயும் இனி இவரே!
தங்கையான எனக்குத் தமக்கையும் கூட !"

பொறாமை மறைந்து பொறுமை வளர்ந்தது;
திருந்திய மகன்கள் விரும்பினர் தம்பியை;
பெருவாழ்வு வாழ்ந்தான் வணிகப் பெருமகன்;
திருமகள் போலத் திகழ்ந்தாள் இளையவள்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

ஆலவாய்க் காண்டம் முற்றுப் பெற்றது.ray2:

# 64 (C). THE SHOWDOWN BETWEEN THE WIVES.

The sons of the first wife were perverted. They disliked the younger wife's son. There would be occasional quarrels and disputes among them.

The children would fight quickly and also patch up quickly. When the elders enter into their quarrels, they get blown out of proportions and become permanent issues.

The mothers took the sides of their sons and the quarrel escalated. The first wife asked the second wife,

"Who are you? Where do you come from? What are your caste and creed? After all you are my husband's lover. I am the one who is legally wedded to him. We married with Agni as the witness. Who is the witness for your wedding?"

The younger wife replied, "We got married in the presence of Thirugnaana Sambandhar. The Sivalingam, the well and the tree at Thiruppurambiyam are the three witnesses for our wedding!"

"How very convenient! None of them could speak nor move. Prove your truth by making them bear the witnesses"

The elder wife laughed at the younger one and ridiculed her.
The pious and the straight forward wife got hurt deeply.

"I have not done anything immoral, but I am being projected as an opportunist. I have no one to take up my side and argue on my behalf.

God! You had appeared as the maternal uncle of a helpless child and restored his property to him. You must prove the truth in my words or I have no other choice than to end my life."

She took a dip in the lotus pond and prayed to Siva, "You are my father and my mother. Produce the three witnesses to prove my words".

The three immovable witnesses appeared in the north eastern side of the temple immediately! The onlookers were wonder struck.

Now everyone scolded the elder wife and praised the younger wife. The younger wife intervened and told them," Please do not scold her. She has made my truthfulness known to the world. To me she is like a mother. To me she is an elder sister"

The elder wive was shaken by the magnanimity of this young woman. They both became the best friends after that. The sons too loved one another. The business roared and the family lived happily.

The Thiru Aalavaaik kaandam ends here. ray2:

# 65. நூற்பயன்.

திங்களணி திருவால வாயெம் மண்ண
ற்றிருவிளையாட் டிவையன்பு செய்து கேட்போர்
சங்கநிதி பதுமநிதி செல்வ மோங்கித்
தகமைதரு மகப்பெறுவர் பகையை வெல்வர்
மங்கலநன் மணம்பெறுவர் பிணிவந்தெய்தார்
வாழ்நாளு நனிபெறுவர் வானாடெய்திப்
புங்கவரா யங்குள்ள போக மூழ்கிப்
புண்ணியராய்ச் சிவனடிக் கீழ் நண்ணி வாழ்வார்.

திருஆலவாய் வீற்றிருக்கும் சோமசுந்தரக் கடவுளின் திருவிளையாடல்களை அன்புடன் வழி பட்டுக் கேட்பவர்கள் சங்க நிதியும், பதும நிதியும் பெற்று குபேர சம்பத்துடன் வாழ்வார்கள்.
நல்ல மங்கலப்பெண்ணுடன் திருமணம் நடக்கும். அறிவுள்ள புத்திரர்களைப் பெறுவார்கள். பகை வெல்லுவார்கள். நோய் அணுகாது.
பூரண ஆயுள் பெற்று நீண்டு வாழ்வார்கள். பின் சுவர்க்கம் சென்று அடைவர். சிவன் திருவடி நிழலில் பொருந்தி பேரின்பத்தில் திளைத்து இருப்பர்.

ஓம் நம: சிவாய சிவாய நம ஓம்.

ஓம் நம: சிவாய சிவாய நம ஓம்.

ஓம் நம: சிவாய சிவாய நம ஓம்.

# 65. The auspicious effects of this puraanam.

The person who listens to these stories of the 64 divine pranks of Lord Soma Sundara of Madurai, will be blessed with Kubera sampathu.

He will get a good wife and intelligent children. He will conquer his enemies. He will not be afflicted by any diseases.

He will live along life with poorna aayush. He will reach Swarga and merge in the lotus feet of lord Siva for eternity.

# 66 . ஆசிரியர் வரலாறு

பரஞ்ஜோதி முனிவர் சுமார் 350 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வாழ்ந்தவர். சோழ நாட்டில் உள்ள திருமறைக்காடு என்னும் வேதாரண்யத்தில் பிறந்தவர். தந்தை மீனாட்சி சுந்தர தேசிகர். சைவ வேளாள மரபைச் சேந்தவர்.

இளவயதிலேயே தமிழ், வடமொழிகளில் புலமை பெற்றவர். இவர் ஒரு துறவி.
பல சிவஸ்தலங்களை தரிசித்து மதுரையை அடைந்தார். அங்கு மீனாட்சி அம்மையையும், சோமசுந்தரப் பெருமானையும் வழிபட்டு வந்தார்.

ஒரு நாள் கனவில் மீனாட்சி அம்மை தோன்றி சிவபெருமான் மதுரையில் புரிந்த
திருவிளையாடல்களைப் பாடுமாறு பணித்தார். இந்நூல் சொக்கநாதர் சந்நிதியில் புலவர்கள் முன்பு அரங்கேற்றப்பட்டது.

# 66. About the author.

Paranjothi munivar was born in Vedaaranyam about 350 years ago. His father was Meenakshi Sundara Desikar.

Paranjothi was well versed both in Tamil and Sanskrit. He was a sanyaasi. He traveled visiting all the Siva kshethraas.

When he was in Madurai, Meenakshi Devi appeared in his dream and bade him sing the glories of the 64 divine pranks played by Lord Siva in Madurai.

This work was released in the presence of many poets in the sannadhi of Chokkanaathar.

Dear friends!

Thank you for reading these simple Tamil verses with great interest.

Two years ago, I did not know that I can write poetry
(in English or Tamil)!

So life is one continuous journey of discovering oneself,
as well as the world and the Lord.

I thank Meenakshi Devi (both of தென்மதுரை and என் mother ஐ) for the successful completion of this task, amidst various distractions and minor problems.

Dear friends!

Skanda/ Muruga is my Ishta daivam. :hail:

I want my next bunch of poems to be written about

Him!

I had a Kanda Puraanam book but now it has got

mixed up with the other books - when I rearranged the things during my sons' visit. :juggle:

So if possible the whole puraanam will be my theme.

If it is beyond my caliber / time limit, I may settle for the selected stories from the puraanam. :clock:

Lord Kanda will decide what is expected of me!

First of all I have to locate the book!

Secondly the Morning Lalitha Sahasra naama

chanting /archanai and evening bhajan will keep me

busy for the next ten days.

Deepaavali means stitching new blouses!

So probably I will resume this thread on Deepaavli

day or on November 1st.

It will give me breathing time to enhance the

"Points to Ponder" with more English Poems

and catch up with the "Do you know that...?"

and "Daily Dose of interesting Information!"

Now off I go to hunt for the Kanda Puranam book!

#1 . திருக்கயிலை மலை. (ஒரு வர்ணனை)

இறைவனின் இனிய இருப்பிடம் கயிலை;
உறைந்த பாற்கடல் அன்னது கயிலை;

வெள்ளியை நிகர்த்தது திருக்கயிலை;
வெள்ளி நிலவுகளின் குவியல் கயிலை;

பொன்வண்ணனைக் காண அன்பர் கூட்டம்;
பொற்பிரம்புடன் ஒழுங்குபடுத்தும் நந்திதேவன்;

இசைந்து முழங்கும் இன்னிசைக் கருவிகள்;
இசைவாய் ஒலிக்கும் இன்னிசை வல்லுனர்கள்!

1. THE BIRTH.

# 1. The Kailash Giri.

Kailash is the glorious residence of Siva and Uma. It resembles a frozen milk ocean.

It is more brilliant than pure silver. It is the heap of thousands of shining silver moons.

The bakthas throng to worship Siva. Nandhi regulates the crowd with his golden staff.

Musical instrument sound in unison. Expert singer render divine songs.

1. (# 2a). மலை மகள்.

"அவமதித்துத் தங்களை இகழ்ந்தான் தக்ஷன்,
அவன் மகளாக நான் இருந்தேன் சில காலம்;

அவன் தந்த இவ்வுடலைத் துறந்து விட்டு,
அவமதிப்பில்லாத இன்னுடல் வேண்டும்!"

"இமவான் விழைவது உன்னையே மகளாக!
இமவான் விழைவது என்னையே மருமகனாக.

அவன் ஆவல் தீரும் வண்ணம் சென்று
அவன் மகளாக வளர்ந்து வருவாய் நீ!

ஆண்டுகள் ஐந்து முடிந்தவுடன் வருவாய்
மீண்டும் என்னிடம் உன் தவப் பயனாக."

வெள்ளியங் கயிலையில் ஒரு மானசவாவி;
வெள்ளியை நிகர்த்த தூய்மையானது அது.

அழகிய மலர்ப் பொழில் அதன் அருகில்,
தொழிலே தவமாகிய இமவான் அங்கே.

உமையவளை மகளாக விழைந்தான் அவன்,
உமையாள் கிடந்தாள் ஒரு தாமரை மலரில்.

பச்சிளம் குழவியைக் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தான்;
"இச்சை நிறைவேறியது இறைஅருளால்!"

விண்ணாளும் ஈசன் மனம் கனிந்துவிட்ட
தண்ணருளை எண்ணி வியந்து மகிழ்ந்தான்.

அன்புடன் குழவியை வாரி அணைத்தான்;
அன்புப் பரிசாக்கினான் மனைவி மோனைக்கு.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

1. (#2 ). Uma Devi.

"Lord! Dakshan humiliated you. I was his daughter Dhaakshaayani for some time. I want to give up this body associated with him and a get a new one - of which I need not feel ashamed." Uma spoke to Siva.

Siva replied,"Himavaan desires you to become his dear daughter and me to become his son in law. You may become his beloved daughter.

When you attain the age of five years, start your penance to reunite with me."

Maanasarovar is a holy lake in Himaalayaas. There are beautiful nandavanams near it.

Himavaan was doing penance in one of them. Suddenly he he saw a pretty female child on one of the lotus flowers.

He knew that it was God's answer to his own prayers. He lifted the child from the flower in ecstasy and ran home to present it to his wife Mona Devi.

1. (# 2b). மலை மகள்.

நெகிழ்ந்து குழவியை மோனை அணைத்ததும்
நிகழ்ந்தது ஓர் அற்புதம் அப்போது அங்கே!

அன்னை அளித்திட தாய்ப்பால் சுரந்தது.
அன்னை அளித்ததோ உலக அன்னைக்கு!

நாளொரு மேனி, பொழுதொரு வண்ணம்;
நாளொரு புதுமை, பொழுதொரு வளமை.

எண்ணி ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் நிரம்பி விட்டன.
எண்ணினாள் அவள் அரும் தவம் செய்ய.

"பச்சிளம் குழந்தை நீ இன்னமும் கண்ணே!
பட்டுடல் தாங்காது கோரத் தவ வேகம்.

தவம் வேண்டாம் என் சொல் கேளடி!
தவம் இருந்து நான் பெற்ற பொன்மகளே!"

"அரனே உயிர்கள் அனைத்தையும் காப்பவன்.
அவனே இந்த எண்ணத்தையும் தந்தவன்.

அரனே என் அருந் தவப்பயன் ஆவான்.
அவனே எந்தன் தவத்தையும் காப்பான்."

அமைத்தான் இமவான் ஒரு தவச் சாலை.
அளித்தான் பல தோழியர், துணைவியர்.

தினம் தவறாமல் சென்று கண்டான்;
மனம் கவர்ந்த மகள் செய் தவத்தை.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

1. (# 2.b) Uma Devi.

The moment Mona Devi embraced the child, a miracle took place. Milk started flowing from her bosom to feed her dear child.

She took great care of the child who grew well and looked new every day. When she became five years old, she wanted to do tapas on Lord Siva.

Himavaan discouraged her since she was no more than a child. But Uma was adamant and said to him,

"Siva takes care of every one of us. He has planted this thought in my mind. He will surely protect me and my tapas. So please do not worry dear father!"

Himavaan made the necessary arrangements for her doing tapas. He gave her friends and servants to take care of her. He visited her every day to see the progress made by her.

1(# 3 a). மேருமலை.

இறைவி கடும் தவம் செய்யும் வேளையில்,
குறைவற்ற திறன் விரும்பிய சூரபத்மன்

கடும் தவங்கள் செய்து வரங்கள் பெற்றான்;
கொடுமைகள் புரிந்து உலகை வாட்டினான்.

கல்லால மரத்தின் அடியில் தட்சிணாமூர்த்தியின்
சொல்லைக் கடந்தவற்றின் உபதேசம் பெற்றும்,

மயக்கம் தீர்ந்து தங்கள் மனம் ஒடுங்காததால்,
கயிலையை அடைந்தனர் சனகாதியர் மீண்டும்.

"காமனைத் தவிர யாரையும் அனுமதியாதே!"
ஆணை பிறப்பித்தான் ஈசன் நந்திதேவனுக்கு.

சரியை, கிரியை, யோகம் என்றவற்றை
மறுபடியும் உபதேசித்தான் நால்வருக்கு.

ஞானம் விழைந்தனர் சனகாதியர்கள்.
"ஞானம் நாவினால் நவிலற்பாலதன்று!"

மோனத்தில் அமர்ந்த ஈசன் கணநேரத்தில்
ஞானம் அளிக்க மனம் ஒடுங்கினார்கள்.

சிவஞானம் அளித்த ஈசன் இருந்தான்
சிவயோகத்தில் ஒரு கணநேரம் மட்டுமே!

கண நேரம் நீண்டது உலகத்தினருக்கு
கணக்கற்ற பற்பல சதுர் யுகங்களாக!

காமம் நீங்கின உலகத்து உயிரினங்கள்.
காமம் இன்றேல் உயிரினம் தோன்றுமா?

உலக வளர்ச்சி தடைப்பட்டு நின்று விட்டது.
உலகத்து உயிரினங்கள் வியப்பில் மூழ்கின!
