# 143. Narada's previous birth.

Narada was the son of a poor woman who made her living by serving a few sAdhUs in an Ashram. During the rainy season, the ascetics stay put in a place for four months, as they can't travel freely during those months.

The mother and son took very good care of them. The boy would eat the left over food as a prasAdam. He would sit and listen to their talks on the greatness of God and the miracles He had performed.

He developed sradhdhA and bhakti even as a child, just five year old.The sAdhUs were pleased with him and taught the child the greatness of bhakti and the secrets of spiritual sAdanA.

On day, his mother got bitten by a snake, when she went to milk the cow and died.The boy became an orphan and started wandering wherever his legs would carry him. He would sit and meditate for long hours.

One day he got the glimpse of a divine figure in his mind's vision. He yearned to see it again and again.
Then he heard a voice tell him, "Child! you are not yet ready to see me and be with me. You have had satsang developed bhakti. In your next birth you will become my supreme bhakta and be with me for ever".

When the boy cast of his body, his jEvAtmA rose high into the heavens and entered Vishnu through the air He breathed, along with Brahman. After the long night, when the creation was started again, he was born as the mAnasa puthrA of Barhma and became the thrilOka sanchAri...the great VishnU bhaktA NAradA.

What is the secret behind his transformation from being the son of an illiterate servant woman to a dEva rishi?
It is nothing but his sincere and staunch devotion to Lord nArAyanA.

# 42. THE PUNDIT AND THE KITE.

The kite glides in the sky at a very high altitude. A learned pundit also soars high above the others around him. Yet a pundit seems to be no better than an ordinary man in his spiritual evolution! Why is it so?

Even though a kite flies high in the sky, its vision is always focused on the earth below. It is always on the look out for something to eat!

In the same way, a pundit will be thinking about the awards, rewards and titles he is likely to get and which he strongly believes that he deserves. He never concentrates on God with a pure and detached mind.

"How many persons can I conquer by my debating skill?"
"How many lectures can I squeeze in that short visit?"
"How many people will become my admirers and fans...?" will be his line of thoughts.

But we know that "Words without thoughts will never to heaven go!" With his mind firmly fixed on the world, God has already taken a back seat in his priorities!

His attachments to the world and the worldly recognition in the form of fame, titles and cash rewards, keep increasing with increasing popularity. None can attain mukti without bhakti. The dry knowledge will become a heavy load on his intellect.

Only the persons who remain humble and simple appreciate that God has showered on them everything they have, merely out of His Infinite Grace and mercy - and not because they deserved them.

Such persons will give up ego and sense of possession (ahankaaram and mamakaaram). They will pursue the path to self realization with a detached and calm mind and succeed in their endeavor.

# 144. Agasthya Maharishi.

Agasthya maharishi might have been small in stature, but he was greater than all the rishis residing from Himalaya to Vindhya Parvatha put together.

When Lord SivA married PArvathi DEvi, everyone had gone there to witness the wedding of the two Gods. The balance of the earth was disturbed. AgastyA was sent down south to restore the balance singlehandedly.

The Vindhya mountain kept growing taller and taller and was threatening to obstruct the passage of the heavenly bodies. Agasthya crossed the Vindhya and from that time it lies flat, as if prostrating to the great rishi.

Vaataapi and Ilvalan were two rogues who used to kill the rishis by pure deception. They would invite the rishis to eat at their home. The unsuspecting Rishi would accept the invitation.

Vaataapi had a special power that even if his body was cut into a hundred pieces and cooked, he could regain life and get back into his original form.

Vaataapi would assume the form of a lamb. Ilvalan would cut it into pieces and cook. The rishi would eat the meal. Vaataapi would regain his form and life and emerge from the stomach of the rishi, killing him.

They played the same trick on sage Agasthya. When the meal was eaten, the sage digested the lamb with the special powers bestowed on him by Lord Ganesh.

When Ilvalan called out the name of Vaataapi, the sage replied that he had been digested. Ilvalan tried to pounce on the sage in retaliation and was reduced to ashes by a mere glance of the great sage.

# 43. TELLERS OF THE WORLD.

Man becomes happy by the sight and smell of the new currency bundles and by the sweet jingle of a purse of new coins!
These make him feel happy, proud and confidant!

Man spends all his life earning money; in multiplying it by wise investments and in spending it with his loved ones in order to make them happy!

We have entered the world empty handed. We will exit from the world empty handed! None of the things earned, saved, bought and enjoyed will come with us to eternity.

The palatial houses built by us, the grand dresses and jewels worn by us, money, coins, luxuries, fancy gadgets will have to be left behind, when the call comes!

We can earn money, give money, take money and spend money only as long as we are alive! Nor for a moment more than that.

The money in the bank is in the custody of the teller. He can handle the money, give it and receive it (obeying the rules of the bank) as if the money were his own! But when he goes home after the working hours, he can not carry even a single rupee of the bank's money with him.

It is time to realize that we are all tellers of THE WORLD! We can handle money as if they are our own only as long as we are in the world. When we leave the world, we have to leave behind us everything that was in our possession and under our custody.

If everyone of us realizes this fact and remembers that we are merely custodians of our wealth and NOT real owners, much of the greed and unscrupulous hoarding of wealth will com to an end.

Let us use the wealth under our custody wisely, without greed for the benefit of everyone around us!

என்றும் இனியவன் கண்ணன்;

விண்ணை அளந்தவன் கண்ணன்;

கோகுலம் காத்தவன் கண்ணன்;

இடையர் பிள்ளையும் கண்ணன்;

பேதைகள் வணங்கிடும் கண்ணன்;

நித்தமும் காத்திடும் கண்ணன்;

வெள்ளை மனம்கொண்ட கண்ணன்;

# 145.The glories of Lord Krishna.

He is deliciously sweet to think about,
The thoughts about Him are also sweet;
With His presence the Universe is built,
He who resides in everyone's heart.

He ate the soil quite playfully,
He measured world equally playfully;
He saved pAnchAli from public shame,
His countless miracles sing His fame..

He lifted the mountain Govardhnan,
And protected Gokulam from Indran;
He mesmerized the calves and cow (s),
Every pretty damsel was His Lady Love.

He is the God of Music divine,
A cowherd, walking by the ravine;
Giridhara is the great dharma dhAtA,
Through His gospel of The Bagavat Gita.

The learned men always praise Him,
The illiterate men always worship Him,
The devas and others beings adore Him,
The God of all the Gods-it is always Him.

He becomes the kindest mother,
The guiding and protecting father;
The most dependable elder brother,
To Him who surrender do never bother.

He enjoys eating the stolen butter,
His mind is as soft as the butter;
Can there can be another like Him?
If there is one, I'm yet to find Him!

Seeking His blessings,
For ever and ever,
For everyone here,
Visalakshi Ramani.

Conclusion.

My 185 poems in this collection,
Have reached their completion!

They were just at random penned,
They were not at all preplanned!

I wondered what to do with them!
Those products of worldly wisdom.

Those tense days have gone away,
Pushed by success's gentle sway.

This collection dedicated to my parents,
Has been welcomed by 1000s of persons.

In about months half and seven,
More than 5000 views have been.

The review I got is a good one too!
Can be viewed in my home page too!

Nothing happens unless wished by God.
May be He will wish for another load!

If He does, we are sure to meet again,
Till then please keep reading these again!

With infinite gratitude do I thank,
Those who shared their views frank.

with warm regards and sincere thanks,
yours sincerely,
Visalakshi Ramani.

# 44. NEARER AND FARTHER.

If we hold a small very stone close to our eyes, it would hide the whole wide world sprawling in front of us. But if we toss it to the ground it most likely that we won't able to even locate it.

It is the same thing with human mind. The faults of the near-ones look mountainous and the real mountains far away look like mole hills.

The trees, plants, shrubs, grass all look different to us. But if viewed from the top of a mountain everything appears just as patches of green.

When we stand on the mountain top our vision broadens and the minor differences do not show up. But when we stand on the ground, the differences stand out very well.

We always tend to magnify the minor faults of the people closer to us. The things and persons far away from us look perfect, attractive and likable.

There is saying that if we approach anyone with affection they will give us hard time. If we move away from someone, then he/she will come closer seeking our affection.

It is the same theory followed by a person and his shadow! Chase it and it will keep running away form you but turn back and it will start to follow you like a loyal puppy.

Let us widen the horizon of our vision. Let us think about the greatness of everything and learn to ignore its short comings. With a broad mind and broader vision, we will find the world a much better place to live in.

# 45. THE ELEPHANT AND THE POT.

A wise man who was one of the advisers of the king, always arrived late to the king's durbar. The king became curious and asked him one day what delayed his arrival every day?

The wise man said his young and extremely mischievous child gave him a hard time and invariably he got delayed everyday. The king wondered why such a wise adviser was unable to manage a mere child!

The wise man promised to bring his child along with him to the durbar the next day, so that the king could understand what kinds of problems he had to deal with, on a daily basis.

The child was very happy to be the center of attraction in the King's durbar. It wanted an elephant. Kings royal elephant with all it decorations was brought there immediately.

Now the child wanted a pot. A beautiful earthen pot duly decorated was brought in.
Now the child demanded that the elephant must be placed inside the pot.

It was an impossible task but no amount of explanation could stop the child from bursting into tears. It started wailing loudly, kicking its legs and beating its hands and threw a terrible tantrum!

Now the king realized that even though he was an all powerful king, there were certain things beyond his capacity.

# 46. WATER AND THE WORDS OF WISDOM.

The well grown ears of grains bend down while the worthless chaff stands upright! The heavier side of the scale moves down while the lighter side moves up.

The branch of the tree laden with many fruits bends down under their weight while the branch which has no fruits is rigid and straight.

The heavy gold chunk sinks to the bottom of water while the lighter wooden block floats on the surface of water.

The humble people are the honorable people. They can be compared to the low lying areas which can store water. The high lying areas cannot store the water.

The upadesam of a satguru is like the rain and falls equally on everyone-without exhibiting any partiality. If the person is humble and has the right mental make up, the upadesams are stored there and he benefits from them. The proud and the conceited mind is like the high ground and lets the upedesam run away from it.

A person must be humble in his heart. But he should not be a coward either. Humility is different from cowardice!! One should be humble in disposition and yet bold in what he stands for. A tiny grass withstands storms while the well grown strong trees get uprooted in the storm.

It is wise to develop a humble disposition so that our mind can collect , store, absorb and benefit from the words of wisdom of mahaans. It will help us to live a peaceful and useful life .

# 47. THE FRAGRANCE AND THE ODOR.

The fishermen lead a hard and risky life!
They dare the rough waves of the raging sea and bring back their catch of fish. Their women-folk carry the fish in their baskets, and go round selling them, house to house.

One day it rained heavily while the women were out selling their fish. They had to seek protection from the slashing and drenching rain. A good natured flower vendor gave them a place in his hut, to wait till the rain stopped. It was the room where he had stored all his flowers like jasmines and roses.

The ladies who were not used to the fragrance of the flowers felt the smell weird and suffocating. One bright girl in that group suggested that they can smell their basket of fish to keep off the odor of the flowers.

All the others promptly agreed and they spent their time smelling their fish baskets with deep affection, until the rain stopped. They thanked the flower vendor and left for their homes.

Apparently there is no good smell or bad smell in the world. The bad smell which is familiar to us becomes a good smell and the unfamiliar good smell becomes a bad smell. So it seems!

# 48. JOINT FAMILY.

The banyan tree called Joint Family is withering away very fast in the world.
It has been replaced by the Nuclear family, Atomic family and will probably be by Sub Atomic Family in the near future.

One person's salary is hardly enough to run a family due the spiraling prices of goods. So both the spouses are forced to earn to provide for the family.

Their children now known by the popular term 'Latch Key Children" have enough temptations, freedom and time to get into bad company and bad habits. No one is going to find out. No one cares to find out either. So they are their own masters!

Every human relationship is subjected to stress and strain - including that between couples. If there are elder members in the family they will use all their tact, wisdom and experience in making sure that the situation does not become explosive.

The growing number of divorces can be avoided by the intervention of the elders in the family. The divorces affect the children worse than the adults.

"Empty-Nest-Syndrome" (E.N.S) is the most prevalent disease among the senior citizens of the world-especially in India where the joint family system had been in vogue for centuries.

Children leave home on various pretexts..higher education, job opportunities, marriage to a person living in another country etc. E.N.S abounds in these homes.

The only thing these senior citizens earnestly wish for, is the opportunity to live with their children and grandchildren. They desire the togetherness more than anything in the world and want to spend the remainder of their lives in loving and being loved.

All their health problems seem to vanish into thin air in the company of their loved ones! The doting children and the rejuvenating hugs of their innocent grand children act like an elixir of life.

The Joint family system is beneficial to all the three generations viz the seniors, the youngsters and the kids. There is a complaint that there will be a lot of confusion in the joint family system. But we find problems creeping up even in nuclear and atomic families.

People in Joint Family develop tolerance and learn the art of 'caring and sharing'. Even animals and birds live in groups and flocks. Ants and bees live a highly developed community life in large colonies in perfect peace and harmony!

When will man learn to do this?

# 49. FACE IS THE INDEX OF THE MIND.

Face is the index of the mind! The beauty of the inner self shows through the face much better than the skin-deep-beauty of the face.

Today the Cosmetics Trade has improved so much that at times we get confused as to whether the things we see /use are God made (natural) or man-made
(artificial)!

Long curly eyelashes resembling the fluttering wings of a butterfly, the eternal tinge of blush on the cheek bones, the eyebrows resembling the rainbow and the thick luscious lips resembling a red apple are too good to be real!

There are creams and lotions to bleach the skin color and make a person fairer and products to make the body smooth as though waxed. Tummy as flat as a leaf, waist resembling that of a bee are the results of relentless workout at the gym. Thoughts about the color of the hair, nails, toes and lips dominate the mind, every waking hour.

Human body is one which keeps continuously changing-every moment of human existence. In trying to keep something - destined to change and perish - constantly young and attractive, people waste their money, time and energy!

God had given the body for spiritual evolution and for serving others. It is not given to be tuned up with umpteen hours of work out at the gym and 'built' in to a piece worthy of exhibition by dressing scantily !

Tamil Poet Bharathi laments that there are ways and means to add brilliance to a diamond but there is none to clean up the filth in the mind of human beings.

A mind filled with good thought will shine through the face. If the mind is overflowing with filthy thoughts like Greed, Anger, Confusion, Miserliness, Ego and Hatred; no amount of make-up can make a face beautiful to look at!

# 50. SPEECH AND SILENCE.

To live a problem-free-life as senior citizens, we have to remember and practice two Golden Rules.

The first one is to reply earnestly, sincerely and with interest to any idea/ suggestion/ advise sought from us - on any issue.

The second one is to listen with rapt attention to whatever is being told to us.

These two rules look simple enough but they are not so easy to follow!

If we keep aloof all the time, there will be no attachment between the members of the family.

At the same time if we keep on prying into every matter and business with curiosity, the youngsters will get exasperated. But we must not show indifference when we are asked to get involved.

To put it in a nutshell, if we learn to live like a lotus leaf, always in contact but do not dominate or pressurize in any way, we can live happily.

# 51. SALT AND PEPPER.

It is the duty of parents to bring up their children - whom they have brought into the world - properly and make them useful citizens . If they demand anything in return for their service, they do not deserve to be called as parents.

There was a time when girls were locked up in the house - once they attained puberty. But those days are gone with the wind. Now the girls study better than the boys and have entered into every profession to perform equally well.

Girls remain grateful to their parents life-long and give them every possible happiness and comfort. But it is improper for the parents to go on demanding for more and more, even after she gets married.

After her marriage, she becomes a part of another family which may need her earnings. By going on demanding the parents will cause unnecessary friction in the family of the girl's in laws.

There was a time when the parents of a married daughter will not accept anything from her - even the paltry gifts. They would make their ends meet within their limited means by living simple and strict but satisfied life.

Mother bears the child. But the mother is not the child nor is the child the mother. The child can't eat to appease the hunger of the mother.

Some of the married daughters remain more loyal to their parents than to their husbands. Instead of controlling the demanding parents, they control the husband into submission and make him as docile as a little lamb. They will have their way and their say.

Parents are becoming quite shameless and unprincipled. While making demands to their married daughters, they must pause for a second to think whether they are doing the right thing.

The spineless husband must also think of the principles involved and refuse to become putty in the hands of their wives. Spineless husband and shameless parents will turn out to be a dangerous combination.

There is a belief that salt will develop the sense of shame and the pepper will add pep to the person's character.

# 52. THE PARASITE AND THE EARTHWORM.

A parasite and an earthworm both depend on others for their food requirements.But they can't be more different.

The earthworm consumes the soil and makes air passages in it. It loosens the soil and helps the air to circulate better. It has earned the nick name as 'The Farmer's Friend'.

A parasite on the other hand absorbs nutrition from the host by sucking its life energy. It will cherish itself well even if the host perishes.

It is a shocking fact that even among the human beings we have these two types of persons. There are a few who like the earthworm enrich the place they live in and help their hosts. The other type will thrive even as they destroy their hosts.

If you are taking in any one please ponder as to whether the person is an 'earthworm' or a 'parasite'. Once they move in you can not get rid of them.

Think well "Is the person a friendly earthworm or a destructive parasite?"

Dear Friends,
The English translation of all the poems which have appeared in this thread have been given already. Now we will move on to the poems which had appeared in the other threads.
The Tamil version as well the English translation will be given and only the English version will be blogged.

பெரிய வடிவப் பெண்ணை விரும்புவதும்;
தரங்கெட்ட ஒருவனை விரும்புவதும்;

“மன்மதனே! உனக்கு ஒரு வேண்டுகோள்;

# 146 . Is Love blind?

One of the strangest things we find in nature is the attraction between the opposite poles and the repulsion between the like poles. It is the same with human mentality also. Like Sesame seeds and Rice, the opposites form a wonderful combination of Black and White.

We find men of small stature getting attracted to huge girls and vice versa. A pretty damsel often chooses a person who actually highlights her beauty by his crudeness.

This question arises in our mind time and again," Why do such things keep happening all the time? Is Love really blind after all?" People say that they 'fall' in love! Why can't they rise in love? Do they secretly accept that their love is their downfall too?

Love is blind or so it seems. Is it a dumb fool too? How can the boys and girls 'falling ' in love, desert their parents - who had held them as the apples of their eyes - at a moment's notice?

How can they hurt the feelings of their parents who have struggled all their lives to give the best to their children? How can they hurt the parents who have shown nothing but love?

How can the lovers keep themselves as the center of the world and wish that everything should happen according to their wishes? How can they become so indifferent and ungrateful?

Oh! Lord of love Manmatha!

I request this from you. Before you shoot your flower arrows on the young boys and girls, please make sure that there is at least an iota of match between them in the various aspects that are bound to affect their lives later on!

நரன் என்பது ஒரு மனிதனைக் குறிக்கும்;

பொறுமையில் சிறந்தவள் பூமியைப் போல;
கருணையில் சிறந்தவள் ஒரு தாயைப் போல;
அறிவில் சிறந்தவள் ஒளிர் சூரியனைப் போல;
