பேச வேண்டும், நாம் எண்ணியதையே;
பேசியதையே நாம் செய்ய வேண்டும்;

ஒன்றை நினைத்து, மற்றதைப் பேசினால்;
ஒன்றைப் பேசி, மற்றதைச் செய்தால்;

தன் நெஞ்சே தன்னைச் சுடும் என்றாலும்;

#059. STRAIGHT-FORWARDNESS AND TRUTHFULNESS.

Straight-forwardness implies the harmony of our thoughts, words and actions. Our actions and words in front of a person and behind his back should not differ in any way.

We must speak our genuine thoughts and we must act according to our genuine words. The thoughts and words must not contradict so also our words and actions must not disagree.

If we think and speak differently our words get defiled. If we talk and act differently, our actions get defiled.

One should always be true to himself. If it is certain that a truth revealed is sure to hurt someone, then we are allowed to speak a harmless ‘white-lie’ to defuse the situation.

When a person’s thoughts, words and actions differ he will tend to become a split personality – truthful neither to himself nor to the others around him.

#060. NAradha’s narakam (Hell)

NAradha can at times be really trying other people’s patience – with his naughty behaviour. On one such occasion Lord NArAyaNa lost His temper and cursed NAradha to be tossed into the Hell and suffer there.

NAradha was shivering with fear since Lord’s words cannot go in waste. He would have to face the narakam. He told the Lord,”I have never been to narakam. Swami please kindly show me where it is located”

Lord drew a picture of the Universe on the ground in front of Him and showed where narakam was located. NAradha asked him to pinpoint the Hell. Lord wrote the word narakam (Hell) on its location in the map drawn by Him.

NAradha exclaimed,”So this is the Hell. This is the narakam where I am to be tossed in order to suffer.” He tossed himself on that spot and rolled asif in severe pain.

Lord told NAradha, “You are trying to cheat me and escape the punishment. This is not narakam. This is only a map of narakam.”

NAradha told the Lord, “Your words can never become lies. You yourself drew this map and labeled this spot as narakam the Hell. So it has become narakam already. I too have exhausted my punishment in this narakam.”

Lord forgot his anger and burst out laughing – since it is was very difficult even to punish the naughty NAradha.

# 061. THE HEAVEN AND THE HELL.

Do you know how the Heaven differs from the Hell? The Heaven and Hell differ only due the differences among souls occupying them.

When a person visited the Heaven and the Hell, he found that they were very much similar. All the souls living there had long heavy wooden spoons tied to their hands – limiting their movements. They can not bend their hands at the elbows and so none of them could not eat the delicious food kept in front of them!

The souls in the Hell looked famished and grumpy while those in the Heaven were well – fed and happy. What made this possible?

The souls in the Heaven demonstrated how they could achieve this feat. Each soul fed the one sitting opposite to him and they helped one other to eat food.

The story was contrary in the Hell! Everyone was grumbling.”Why should I feed him? Let him starve just as I am starving!”

Heaven and Hell are not outside our minds. The selfish persons living only for ‘ I ‘ and ‘ My ‘ create a Hell and live in it, while those who help the others around them create a Heaven, and live in it.

It is as simple as that!

காட்டில் தோன்றியது ஒரு யானை;

முதல் முறையாக உணர்ந்தார்;

#062. Miraculous powers.

A man did severe tapas (penance) and gained several unusual spiritual powers. He became very proud of his powers. One day another man approached him and spoke to him, “Revered sire! Can you perform miracles?”

The tapasvi replied, ” You may test me in any way you deem fit. I can prove my special powers.” The man now asked the tapasvi,” Can you kill the elephant standing over there?”

The tapasvi after the utterance of a mantra, threw some water on the elephant. It immediately fell down quite dead.

The man now asked the tapasvi,” Can you bring back the elephant to life?”

After the utterance of another mantra the tapasvi threw some water on the elephant and brought it back to life.

The man asked the tapasvi,” What is the use of killing an elephant and bringing it back to life, when you could have used your tapas for gaining mOkshA (the final liberation) and merging with God?”

The tapasvi felt sheepish for having wasted all the power gained by his severe penance in useless pursuits.

I used to wonder at the energy and enthusiasm of the other devotees attending the early morning maargazhi pooja in the temple.

They rest during the rest of the day and never really feel the
deficit of sleep.

So temple visit has become 'the business of the lazy' since such people who have nothing else to do.

It is also the 'laziness of the busy' who already have overlapping tight schedule!

உள்ளே இருக்கும் பொருட்களை;
நபர்களை, நடவடிக்கைகளை;

மங்கையின் கண்களில் ஒரு மயக்கம்;

மானின் கண்களில் தெரியும் மருட்சி;

நம் உள்ளப் பாங்கும், நம் உணர்ச்சிகளும்;

063. EYES…THE WINDOWS OF THE SOUL

A window allows two-way traffics. The sight, sound and smell can travel into or out of the house. A person standing near the window can watch the people and the things happenings inside the house.

Eyes are the windows of the soul. The light from the external world gets in through the eyes. They also allow somethings to spill out from inside the person.

The sweet innocence of a baby shows up in its eyes. The dreams and desires of a young woman are seen in her eyes.
The lust for wealth and women shines in the eyes of some men. The compassion oozes from the eyes of a holy man. Cruelty drips from the eyes of a tiger. Fright swells up in the eyes of a deer.

The sparkling mischief in the eyes of a squirrel; the ignorance in the eyes of a lamb; the craftiness in the eyes of a jackal; the loyalty in the eyes of a dog; the pride in the eyes of a cat and the majesty in the eyes of an elephant are all self revealing and show us the nature of the animal as clear as a crystal.

Our innermost thoughts and desires light up our eyes and our face. The beauty and grace added to our personality by our noble thoughts cannot be replaced even by the finest makeup in the world.

Does this explain why celebrities - who are always under a microscope - cover their eyes with huge, dark, sunglasses?

நீர் நிலையை அடைந்த நாரதர்;

கொடிய நோய் ஒன்று தோன்றியது;

#064. The power of MAYA.

Lord NArAyaNa said to NAradha,” No one can recognize MAyA, while he was under its influence.” NAradha wanted to witness the deluding power of MAyA.

They both went on a long journey. Lord NArAyaNa became very thirsty and requested NAradha to fetch some water to drink.

NAradha went to a nearby pond to fetch some water. He met an enchantingly beautiful girl there and fell in love with her. They got married and begot many children.

A strange disease started spreading in their country, killing everyone affected by it. NAradha and his family tried to escape the disease by going off to a different city.

On the way a flash flood dragged away everyone of his family except NAradha. He sat down there weeping bitter tears. At that point Lord Narayana asked him,”Why do you take such a long time to fetch some drinking water?

Only then NAradha realized that the entire drama was a delusion of mAyA and had taken place in less than a minute!

Such is the power of mAyA!

NAradha exclaimed to the Lord, ” The power of MAyA is really frightening! Poor human beings live in MAyA all their lives. Oh Lord! Please never ever subject me to your MAyA, I beg of you”.

உணர்வும், உணவும், உண்மையிலேயே;

#065. FOOD - THE FUEL TO THE BODY.

“You become THAT about which you keep on thinking”

“That becomes you which you keep on eating.”

Nothing can be truer than these two statements. Our body is built out of what we eat and out mind too is dependent of the food we eat.

Sweet, juicy, tasty, fresh food pleases the stomach of the eater. It gets easily digested and the stomach also becomes happy. The healthy, simple and nutritious food develops the ‘S’Antha swabhAvam” in a person or the ‘SAthvic temperament.’

Food which is too hot, too salty, too sour, too bitter and too spicy develops the ‘RAjasa swabhAvam’ or the hyperactive temperament.

Stale food, spoiled food, food that has been cooked several hours ago, food which has got dried and lost all the essence will develop ‘ThAmasic swabhAvam’ and a dull and lazy temperament.

‘ThAmasan’ is immersed deep in ignorance and throws away his invaluable birth as a human being in waste. The ‘RAjasan” is hyperactive and performs more and more ‘kAmya karmAs’ (actions performed seeking something in return) and get bound in the endless cycle of births and deaths.

‘Sathvan’ develops the s’Antha swabhAvam and climbs the ladder of ‘sAdhanA’ to acquire ‘JnAnam’ (True knowledge) and then finally liberation or ‘Mukthi’.

It is best to avoid food with intense tastes as well as the spoiled and stale food. It is good to stay away from smoking and drinking. Healthy eating habits of healthy food gives us a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Healthy thoughts and healthy life automatically follow these.

#066. யார் துறவி?

உலகினைத் துறந்தனர் இருவர்;

#066. “Who was the real sanyAsi?”

A husband and wife had renounced the world and become sanyAsis. One day they walked through a forest. The man saw a sparkling diamond and was afraid that his wife might wish to possess it. So he quickly picked it up wishing to hide it somewhere or bury it before she sees it.

But the wife had already seen what he was trying to do and asked him, “If you can still differentiate a diamond from a pebble, why did you have to become a sanyAsi in the first place?”

The man felt ashamed since the woman who had once loved gold and diamonds – before becoming a sanyAsi – had a better power of discretion and detachment than himself.

அறிவின் உணவு கருத்துப் புதையல்;
அறிவின் உறக்கம் தியானம், மௌனம்;
அறிவின் உழைப்பு சிந்தனை ஓட்டம்;

சரிவரப் பணி செய்ய மறுக்கும் உடம்பு;

சற்று வயிற்றுக்கும் ஈவர் சான்றோர்;

நல்லவை நுழைந்தாலே தூய்மை வரும்;

#067. FOOD FOR THOUGHTS.

For a human body to function properly, it needs food, work and rest. It is exactly the same with a human mind also.

The food for the intellect is the vast knowledge stored in the form of books. The work of the intellect is the thought process. The rest is given to the mind in the form of DhyAnam (meditation) and mounam (silence). The purpose of intellect is to come out of delusion.

Even if we starve for one day, our body undergoes several changes. The same thing is true of our mind and intellect. Yet how many of us offer food for the mind daily, in the same way we offer to our body?

Reading is the best way of acquiring knowledge. Listening is
also equally effective since it benefits those people who can’t read or don’t know how to read.

How many great mahAtmAs, geniuses, thinkers, philosophers, JnAnis and AchArYAs have registered their invaluable thoughts in the form of books! We cannot even hope to be able to read then in one human lifespan!

We have time to spare for and spend on everything – except reading! Even if all the essence of these books is extracted and offered in a silver cup, people refuse to be spoon-fed!

Most people spend their time in watching mega serials, talk shows, soap Opera and in reading / watching news channels. They can always manage time for watching a movie and talking about their unfortunate neighbors!

If a room is filled with garbage, who will even enter it? If the mind is filled with filth no noble thoughts can enter it. If all the filth is thrown out and the mind is kept clean, only then knowledge will enter into it and noble thoughts will emerge from it.

குருவுக்கு தேவை செல்வம்;

குறு நகை புரிந்தார் அந்த குரு;

பொருள் பெறவேண்டி வந்தேன்;

#068. Who is the real yAchakan (beggar)?

A guru needed money to run his gurukulam and approached a king to get a fat donation.The king was in his pujA and the guru heard him beg for money and other riches from God – for running the country’s administration well.

The guru smiled when he heard the king’s prayers and decided to go away. When the king learned that the Guru was leaving even without meeting him, he hurriedly stopped the Guru.

The king asked him the purpose of his visit and the guru said,” There is no point in one beggar begging from another beggar. I would rather beg for wealth directly from God!”

So who is the real yAchakan…the guru or the king?
We are all yAchakas when we stand in front of God – the bestower of everything we seek from Him!

யுகத்தில் வாழும் பிறவிகள் அனைத்தும்;

இயங்கினர் இந்த யுகத்தில் மனிதர்;

ஒருவருக்கு ஒருவர் பரம வைரியாய்;

இருக்கும் எப்போதும் நிகழ்ந்தபடியே;

#069. IN THE CHATHUR YUGAMS…

In every eon or yugam, there are different sets of rules, yukti, budhdhi and sakthi.

In the first yuga called ‘Sathya yugam,’ the good people and the wicked ones lived on different land masses. They had no need to meet one another or interact with one another for any reason whatever!

In the second yugam called ‘ ThrEthA yugam,’ the good and the wicked people lived on the same land but in different countries like RAmA and RAvanA did. The wicked asurAs and humans interacted freely for different reasons.

In the third yugam called ‘ DhwApara yugam,’ the good and the wicked people were born in the same land, in the same country and in the same family as close relatives. Yet they hated each other and wanted to destroy each other just as the PANdavas and Kouravas did.

The fourth yugam called ‘Kali yugam,’ is unmatched since the combination of goodness and wickedness is found in the mind of every single person. Man has become his own enemy! There is no need to go to a different land, or a different country or a different house. A constant battle is going on every mind between the good and the evil!

Will the Good overcome the Evil or will it get defeated?

The good fortune and bad fortune we suffer is not given to us by anyone other than ourselves. If the goodness in our mind conquers evil, good fortune follows us. If the evil emerges victorious, then bad fortune will haunt us.

“மகனே! நீ காட்டுக்குள் செல்;

தாமிரச் சுரங்கத்தைக் கண்டான்;

புத்தம் புதிதாகக் கிடைக்கும்;

கிடைக்கும் ஆத்ம தரிசனமும்;

#070. Atma dhars’anam (Self Realisation)

A wood cutter lived a hard life of a hand to mouth existence. A compassionate mahAn blessed him and said that he would become very rich if he went farther into the jungle to cut wood. The wood cutter went farther in and found many trees of greater value.

He cut a few branches, sold them and got a lot of money. Next day he went further in and found a copper mine. He brought out the ores and earned more money.

The next day he went in farther and found a silver mine and the next day a mine of gold and then a cave filled with brilliant diamonds.

Spiritual journey is very much similar to the story. Harder we try, farther we go and we get many amazing powers and sidhdhis. But we should be distracted by these.

If we continue with sincerity we will get Atma dhars’anam ( Self Realisation) and a glimpse of our favorite God also at the end.

#071. குறைவும், நிறைவும்!

குறைவும், நிறைவும் இரு மனப்பாங்குகளே;
குறைந்த, நிறைந்த பொருட்களால் அல்ல;

நினைத்ததை எல்லாம் வாங்கிக் குவியார்;

மனக் கவலை இன்றி வாழ்பவர் உள்ளனர்;

கண்டதும், உதறினார் மேலான ஆடைகளை;

#071. SATISFACTION AND DISSATISFACTION.

Satisfaction and dissatisfaction are merely two mental attitudes and do not really depend on the wealth or status of a person! He who is contended with what he has is satisfied while he who is not contented with his possessions is dissatisfied.

The satisfied person does not indulge in the ‘no-expenses-barred’ shopping spree and buy everything in sight. The dissatisfied person does exactly this!

There is an emptiness in his heart and in all probability he is trying to fill it up by hoarding on the earthly possessions.

“The more you have , the more you want!” For some people shopping and hoarding things have become mental obsessions.

Person living a hand – to – mouth existence on an uncertain daily wage may be perfectly contented with his lot while a rich man may spend sleepless nights – tossing on his bed.

‘Veda’ says that ThyAgam (Self sacrifice) is the secret of Amruthathvam ( bliss) and Amarathvam (immortality). ThyAgam involves in giving up voluntarily and willingly one’s own pleasures and possessions.

When Mahatma Gandhi saw a poor wretched woman with not enough clothes to cover her body, he gave up his sophisticated dresses and switched over to dress of the majority on the poor Indians. This did not reduce or diminish his name or fame since he was loved even more after this transformation.

He became the idol of Ahimsa and is remembered fondly as the Father of our nation. True happiness lies in reducing our needs and sharing the excess we have with the less fortunate people around us.

ThyAgam (self-sacrifice) tones up the heart of a person and makes him glow like a deepam which is known to exist – only in order to give light to the world.

அதிசயமான புதிய அறிவிப்பு;

மன்னன் கேட்டபடியே ஓர் இளைஞன்;

ஏழைத் தநதையின் எண்ணமே இது;
‘சாம்பல் கயிற்றைச் செய்ய முடியாது;

#072. A rope made of ash

A king felt that all the senior citizens were of no use and should be banished. He wanted all his citizens to be young, energetic and active. One wise minister argued with the king that it was a wrong decision, but the king had made up his mind already.

So the minister begged for one month’s time. He announced a strange contest! Anybody who could bring a rope made of ashes would be awarded 1000 gold coins.

A young man brought a rope made of ash on a plate and won the prize of 1000 gold coins. The minister asked the man to tell the truth about the rope of ash.

The man said,” This was the idea of my 70 years old father. He told me that since we cannot make a rope out of ash, we will make the ash out of a rope. So a rope was kept on a plate burnt on the plate to produce the rope made of ash.

The minister turned to the king and said, “MaharAj! None of the young, active and agile minds could find a solution to the problem of the rope made of ash. It took the wisdom of an old mind to figure it out! Do you still consider that all the senior citizens are an unnecessary burden on your kingdom?”

The king realized his folly and cancelled the royal decree banishing all elders from his country. The people in the country both young and old, lived happily as before.

பெற்றோர் புகார் அளிக்கவும் வேண்டாம்;

#073. RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Agitations are becoming the order of the day! Women’s agitation for liberation, equality and equal rights, the seniors citizens’ agitation to be taken care of by their family, the students’ agitation with umpteen demands are seen very frequently now.

Today the government has to pass laws to ensure that the children take care of their aged parents. Why?
We must remember at this juncture that rights and responsibilities are entwined inseparably. So also the duties and demands.

If each and everyone of us perform our duties properly, there won’t be any need for the other to raise their demands. If the sons realize that it is their duty to take care of their aging parents, the parents will have no need to demand to be taken care of. The parents wont need to seek the long arms of the law to uphold their rights.

If the government performs its duties properly all the agitation can be done away with. Whenever we demand for our rights, we must stop to think for a moment whether we are performing our duties and responsibilities.

If we understand that one person’s demands lie concealed in another person’s duties – we won’t shun our responsibilities.

கண்டார்கள் ஒரு புதிய தேவனை;

#074. PARA BRAHMAM (THE SUPREME GOD)

DEvas and Asuras battled for a very long time. Finally DEvas won the battle and were celebrating their victory. Then they saw a new God whom they had never met before. Agni (The God of Fire) was sent to find out who the new God was.

The new God asked Agni, “What is you special power?” Agni said that He can burn down anything. The new God placed a straw and told Agni to burn it. However hard Agni tried, he was unable to set it on fire.

Next VAyU (The God of Wind) was sent to find out about the new God. He was asked by the new God, “What is your special power?”

VAyU said that He can blow away anything. The new God placed a straw and told VAyU to blow it away. However hard He tried VAyU was unable to blow the straw away.
Now Indra (The King of DEvas) was sent but the new God had already disappeared and Uma dEvi stood there in His place.

She told the DEvas,” The new God whom you all failed to remember or recognize is The Para Brahmam. He was the real cause of your victory over the Asuras in the war. Without His help, none of you really possess any power to do anything at all!”

In our world, it is always the mother who introduces the father to a child. Even in Heaven, the Mother of the universe Uma dEvi had to introduce the Para Brahmam The Father of the Universe, to His children – the Devas filled with ego and pride.

உலவுகின்றது இப்படியும் ஒரு கருத்து;

நால்வரிடம் விவரமாகக் கூற முடியாது;
அல்லவை நேரினும் நல்லறிவுரை கூடாது;

வெள்ளை பொய்கள் என்று ஒன்று உண்டு;
வெள்ளை மனத்தவர் கூறிடும் பொய்கள்;

உலகில் விரும்பப்படுகின்றன இவைகள்;

#075. WHITE LIES
.

There is a saying that the whole world is a stage and all the people in it are actors. There is a lot of truth in this statement.

A person can’t walk around wearing his heart on his sleeves. Everything cannot be and must not be disclosed to everyone around. Very often we will have to pretend as if even unpleasant things and situations are pleasant things and situations.

There is a category of lies called ” the white lies”. These are spoken by good people, with good intentions – to prevent minor trifles and troubles from getting magnified and blown out of proportion.

At times the government spreads official lies through the various media, to defuse a difficult situation and to control agitations, arson and looting from spreading.

In the same way to live peacefully in a family, we have to utter
white lies occasionally. Even if white lies are not pure truths, people love them since these are spoken by good people with the good intentions for good purposes.

என்றவன் நின்றான் வெளியே;

#076. DO WE NEED TO PRAY TO GOD?

Whether or not worshiping God has beneficial effects, is the question that has been asked for thousands of years.

Two friends were passing by a temple. One of them wanted to worship the deity and the other wanted to stay out and wait for him.

The friend who went into the temple got bitten by a venomous scorpion. The friend who had waited outside found a new shining silver coin!

The first man went to his guru and asked angrily,”Why I who worshiped the God got bitten by a scorpion and my friend who did not worship God a gift of a silver coin?”

Guru used his JnAna dhrushti (divine vision) and told him these startling truths. “You my dear son were destined to be bitten by a cobra on today! God with His infinite mercy had changed it to a merely harmless scorpion bite.

Your friend on the other hand was destined to find a buried treasure. Since he did not worship God, he got merely a single silver coin nd not the entire treasure.

Who are we to understand or comment on the actions of God? As long as we never lose our faith and trust in Him, nothing bad will happen to us and trouble us!”

குலகுரு மகளோ பெரும் கோபக்காரி;

விழிகளில் பட்டாள் குருவின் பெண்;

அரச குமாரியைத் தன் சேடி ஆக்கினாள்;

தேவயானிக்கு உண்டு இரண்டு மகன்கள்;

பலநாள் திருடன் ஒருநாள் அகப்படுவான்;

#078. FIRE AND GHEE.

Devayani was the daughter of Sukracharya-the kula guru of the asurAs. CharmishtA was the princess, the daughter of the asurA king.

One day the king and his daughter visited the guru’s ashram. The two girls went out for a bath. A fierce wind blew and their dresses got mixed up.

Devayani who was very proud and arrogant, scolded the princess for this mix up. The princess too got angry, pushed her into a dry well and went away.

Devayani was saved from the well by king YayAti. She requested him to marry her, but he was afraid of the terrible wrath of the Guru and went away.

Devayani was an adamant girl. She would always manipulate her father and have her way. She got married to king YayAti and made the princess Charmishta one of her maid servants.

Devayani got two sons. The princess Charmishta – who was reduced to a mere maid servant – met the king in private and told him her sad tale. YayAti married her also secretly and they had three sons.

One day the King’s treachery was exposed and the kula guru cursed him to attain premature old age. Later he took pity on the king and said that he could exchange his old age with someone’s youth.

YayAti begged all his five sons to give their youth in exchange for his old age. Four of the five sons bluntly refused while the youngest son Puru agreed for this weird exchange.

The king becomes young once again an enjoyed the pleasure of life with his two wives. But he never really felt satisfied or contented.

One fine day it dawned on him that desires are like a roaring fire and enjoyment was like pouring ghee on the fire.

Can ghee ever extinguish a fire?

He returned his youth to Puru and accepted his old age. Puru was made the new king and ruled the land wisely.

இணைப்பதே நாம் காணும் பாலம்;

தந்தை என்றால் பயம், மரியாதை;
தாய் என்றால் பாசம், உரிமைகள்;

#079. WOMAN IS A BRIDGE!

A bridge connects the two banks of a river. A woman is the bridge connecting the different members of a family. Children respect their father and love their mother.

They maintain a respectable distance with their father but take all kinds of liberties with their mother. A child has to just ask once for anything it needs and the mother will make sure it is made available to the child.

A woman is the connecting bridge between the father and the children. A woman is the bridge between the grandparents and their grandchildren. She is the bridge between the teachers and the students.

One woman can do the chores which ten men find difficult to perform. Ten men working together cannot do things as beautifully and artistically as one woman does.

A home without a woman (be it in the form of a mother, a sister, a wife or a child) is a hell. Goddess of wealth Lakshmi Devi will desert such a house and Alakshmi (the opposite of Lakshmi Devi) will settle down there permanently.

To get the best service of a bridge, we must maintain it well. Let us cherish womanhood and maintain the bridge called woman well so that it can serve us well.

உண்ணப்பட்டால் புறா மாளும்;

வந்தன தராசும் ஒரு கத்தியும்;

வெட்டி வெட்டி இட்டபோதும்;

தயங்காமல் ஏறி அமர்ந்தான்;

மன்னுபுகழ் அடைந்தான் சிபி;

#080. King Sibi RANA and the pigeon.

A pigeon was chased by an eagle and sought King Sibi’s protection. The eagle was willing to spare the pigeon but on one condition. The king must give the eagle an equal weight of flesh cut from his own body – without shedding even a drop of tear.

A pair of scales and a sword were brought to the king. The king sliced off his thigh muscle and put it in the balance against the weight of the pigeon. The pigeon’s side was heavier.

He cut off more and more of his body and placed those pieces on the scale. The pigeon was heavier than all the flesh the king could cut off and offer. Finally he himself sat on one side of the scale and his weight exactly balanced that of the pigeon!

The dove and the eagle suddenly disappeared and in their places stood Indra and Yama. Flowers rained from the sky! The dove was in fact Indra and the eagle was Yama. They had played this drama to show to the world what great humanitarian the King Sibi was.
