64 THIRU VILAIYAADALGHAL
45 (a). THE CURSE OF BRUHASPATI.
On the Southern bank of the river Vaigai, there was a place called Guruvirunthurai. Deva guru Bruhaspati had done penance in that place.
Sukalan was a farmer living there. He and his wife Sukalai had twelve sons. The boys were ill bred and behaved badly but the parents failed to correct their mistakes. So the boys grew up to become public nuisances and had neither good manners nor good habits.
Both Sukalan and hos wife died suddenly and the twelve boys were left to fend for themselves. They gave up farming and started to hunt for food.
One day, they say Bruhaspati doing tapas and started throwing stones, sand and mud on him. Guru baghavaan got angry and cursed the boys thus,
“Since digging the soil is your family profession, you will be born as pigs that dig the soil. You will become orphans in that birth also and suffer a lot!”
The wicked boys got punished thus but they wanted to know when they would be freed from this curse. Guru baghavaan replied,
“When lord Siva takes pity on you and appears to give you milk in the form of a female pig-your mother. You will gain intelligence and wisdom from the milk and become respectable citizens. You will become the honorable ministers of the Paandiya King and serve him well for many years. Finally you will reach the heavenly abode and gain liberation or mukti”
There lived a very strong and courageous boar. He had become the leader of his gang by virtue of his strength. These twelve boys were born to the boar and its wife as twelve piglets.
