VENKATESA PURAANAM

#21. The ghee lamps

Vishnu sarma was a Brahmin. He gave up all his kula aachaaram and vichaaram. He found happiness and pleasure in the company of fallen women. He possessed even the wife of his own guru.

When he became old, all his sins afflicted him along with his old age. He became very sick and sad. Nobody wanted to have anything to do with him. He was driven out of his own home and town.

He went to the jungle nearby. He was too tired and feeble to go on. He fell down and could not get up again. Wild animals came to eat his flesh and he met a very sad and cruel end.

Yama was told of the sins of Vishnu sarma. “This man was not loyal to his guru. He enjoyed the company of his own guru patni.” Yama became very angry with this wicked man and sent him off to the hell promptly.

Veda Naaman was Vishnu sarma’s son. He was a good man and a good son. He thought about his dear departed father. “My father was born as a Brahmin. But he committed all kinds of sins without even thinking about their evil after effects.

He died a painful death. Surely he must be suffering in the hell. I wish I could dissolve his sins and make him free from the sufferings of the hell. ”

He prayed to lord Srinivaasan with bhakti and lit the lamps filled with the ghee made out of cow’s milk. The bundle of sins committed by Vishnu Sarma started getting reduced slowly until one day all his sons had vanished.

He was allowed to go out of the hell and escape from his sufferings. He reached Vaikuntham solely because of the sincere efforts of his dear son Veda Naaman.

7#6a. சர்யாதியின் வேள்வி

சசியும், இந்திரனும் போல வாழ்ந்தனர்
ச்யவனரும் சுகன்யாவும் இன்ப மயமாக.

தாய் பரிதவித்தாள் பாசத்தால் - மகளைப்
போய்ப் பார்க்கலாம் ஒரு முறை என்று.

ஏறிக் கொண்டனர் அழகிய ரதத்தில்;
சீறிப் பாய்ந்தது ரதம் ஆசிரமத்துக்கு.

தேவ வடிவமும், யௌவனமும் நிரம்பிய
யுவனுடன் கண்டனர் மகள் சுகன்யாவை.

திடுக்கிட்டான் அதைக் கண்ட சர்யாதி.
'அடுக்குமா இவளுக்கு இந்தத் துரோகம்?

கிழட்டுக் குருடனை உதறி விட்டாளா?
அழகிய இளைஞனை வரித்து விட்டாளா?

தகுமா இது ஒரு மன்னனின் மகளுக்கு?
தகுமா இது ஒரு முனிவரின் மனைவிக்கு?'

உபசரித்தாள் சுகன்யா ஓடி வந்து
உள்ளமும் முகமும் அன்பால் மலர.

"எங்கே உன் கணவர்?" என மன்னன் கேட்க
"இங்கே அவர் !" என அழைத்துச் சென்றாள்.

"இளைஞரே கூறுங்கள் நீர் ச்யவனர் தானா?
இளமையும், தேவ அழகும் கிடைத்தது எப்படி?

கண்ணொளி மீண்டது எங்கனம் கூறுங்கள்!
பெண்ணையே சந்தேகித்து விட்டேன் நான்."

ஆதியோடு அந்தமாக உரைத்தார் ச்யவனர்
பாதிப்பு நீங்கியது எங்கனம் என மன்னனுக்கு.

7#6a. King Sharyaati's yagna


Sage Chyavana and Sukanya lived as happily as Indra and IndraaNi Devi. Meanwhile the queen - Sukanya's mother - was worrying about the life of her dear daughter with a blind and old sage in a forest. She wanted to meet her daughter to know about her welfare.

So king Sharyaati and his queen got into a chariot and sped towards the ashram of Chyavana. They were suprised to see a beautiful young man with their daughter. Chyavana was nowhere to be seen!

The king got a doubt now. 'Had Sukanya forsaken the old blind sage and chosen a new young man as her life partner? Will such a behavior suit the daughter of a king or the wife of a rushi?'

Sukanya came running towards them with a face glowing with joy. The King demanded to know where Chyavana was. Sukanya took him to the young man. The king still could not believe his eyes and asked the young man.

"Are you indeed sage Chyavana? If so how did you get back your eyesight? How did you get this youthful Deva sareeram? I doubted my own daughter foolishly unable to beleive my eyes!"

Sage Chyavana retold all the happenings in great detail to the eager King.

KANDA PURAANAM - DAKSHA KAANDAM

15a. யானைமுகன் அருள்

அவுணனின் ஆணவத்தை அழித்த பின்னர்
தவம் செய்யும் திருமாலிடம் சென்றார்;

ஆலங்காட்டை அடைந்தார் கணபதி.
ஆலமரப் பொந்தில் பாம்புருவில் மால்!

ஆனைமுகனைத் தொழுத உடனேயே
அன்னையின் சாபம் நீங்கப் பெற்றார்.

திருக்கயிலை திரும்பினார் யானைமுகன்
விருப்பத்துடன் எழுந்தருளினார் அங்கு.

சிவனை வழிபட வந்த தேவர் முனிவர்கள்
இவரைத் தொழலாயினர் முதன் முதலில்.

“ஆனைமுக அவுணனுக்குச் செய்த சேவையை
ஆனைமுகக் கடவுளுக்கும் செய்வோம் இனி!

திருமுன்பு செய்யும் திருத் தொண்டுகளை
அருள் கூர்ந்து ஏற்றுக் கொள்வீரா நீங்கள்?”

தலையில் குட்டிக் கொண்டு அனைவரும்
தாழ்ந்து எழுந்தனர் இருசெவிகள் பற்றி!

அன்று முதல் எல்லோரும் புரிகின்றனர்
இன்று வரை இந்த வணக்கம் திருமுன்பு.

6#15a. The grace of Ganapathy.

After taming the Gajamukha asuran, Ganapathy went to Aalangaadu.
Vishnu was doing penance in the hole of a Banyan tree there, in the form of a snake.

Ganapathy removed the curse laid by Uma and returned to Kailash.
Whoever came to worship Siva worshiped Ganapathy first.

They wanted to do the same seva they used to do to the asuran Gajamukhan. So they rapped gently on their forehead three times.

They held their ears with their hands and did “Dhorbik karanam”.
This practice caught on and even today Ganapathy is worshiped in this manner.

22. அவிர் பாகம்

வையகத்தில் நடந்தான் லக்ஷ்மியுடன்,
வைகுந்தவாசன் இயற்கையை ரசித்தபடி.

சேஷாச்சலத்தின் மலைச் சரிவுகளில் யாகம்
செய்து கொண்டிருந்தனர் முனி புங்கவர்கள்.

திருமலையில் செய்யும் யாகமும், தவமும்,
ஒரு குறைவும் இன்றி நிறைவேறும் அல்லவா?

அரசன் என எண்ணிய முனிவர் இறைவனை,
வரவேற்று அளித்தனர் பாலும், பழங்களும்.

பீதாம்பரம், இரத்தின ஹாரம் அணிந்தவன்
சாதாரண மனிதனாக இருக்க முடியாதே!

“எந்த நாட்டு அரசர்? தங்கள் பெயர் என்ன?
இங்கு வந்த காரணம் கூறுங்கள்!” என்றனர்.

“அரசனும் அல்ல, நான் அந்தணனும் அல்ல;
ஆசாரம், ஜாதி, குலம், கோத்திரம் இல்லை!

தந்தையும் இல்லை, தாயும் இல்லை எனக்கு!
எந்த தேசமும் என் தேசமே! எப்போதுமே!

எங்கும் இருப்பவன், எல்லாம் என் ரூபம்;
எத்தனை பெயர்கள், அத்தனை குணங்கள்!”

‘மனநிலை சரியாக இல்லையோ இவருக்கு?’
முனிவர்கள் தொடர்ந்தனர் தம் ஹோமத்தை.

மந்திரங்கள் ஓதி ஹோமம் செய்கையில்,
வந்தன இரு கரங்கள் அவிர் பாகம் பெற்றிட.

அக்கினியின் நடுவில் கரங்களை நீட்டி –
அச் சக்கரவர்த்தி பெற்றார் முனிவரின் ஹவிசை!

சங்குச் சக்கரதாரியாகக் காட்சி அளித்தார்;
அங்கு வந்திருந்தவர் ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் அல்லவா?

VENKATESA PURAANAM

#22. The Yagna

Srinivaasan and Lakshmi Devi went on a stroll enjoying the beauty of the hill sides. They saw a group of sages performing a yagna on the slopes of Seshaachalam. Everyone knew that any yaagaa, yagna, or tapas done on the Seshachalam would bear fruit and get completed unhindered.

The sages saw Sreenivaasan and thought he must be the king of country. Surely a man dressed in peeta ambaram and wearing ratna haaram cannot be an ordinary man.

They welcomed the divine couple and offered them milk and fruits. The sages wished to know the name and country of the person they had imagined to be a king.

But Sreenivaasan replied to the in an intriguing manner. “I am neither a king nor a Brahmin. I do not have any aachaaram or varNam or vamsam or gothram. I have neither a mother nor a father.

All the countries are my own countries. I prevail everywhere. Everything is in me and I am in everything. You can not count my names nor the qualities associated with those names.”

The sages felt pity that such a handsome rich man seemed to be out of his mind. They went on with their yagna. When they offered the havisu, a pair of hands appeared in the flame to receive the offering.

Those hand belonged to the the person whom they had imagined to be a king. They realized that it was none other than the god they were worshiping.

God gave them his darshan with his conch, Sudharshan, mace and lotus flower along with Lakshmi Devi

7#6b. சோம யாகம்

"பதிவிரதையை மணந்துளேன் நான்,
பதிதை ஆகவே முடியாது இவளால்!

காட்டுக்கு வந்தனர் அஸ்வினி தேவர்கள்;
கேட்டனர் இவளிடம் தம்மை ஏற்கும்படி.

அறிவின் திறனால் அவர்களை வென்றதால்
அளித்தனர் கண்ணொளியும் தேவ சரீரமும்.

மதி பலத்தால் வென்றாள் நிபந்தனையில்
விதியையே மாற்றிவிட்டாள் சுகன்யை.

உறுதி அளித்தேன் அஸ்வினி தேவர்களுக்கு
மறுக்காமல் சோம பானம் பகிர்ந்தளிப்பதற்கு.

சோம யாகம் செய்ய வேண்டும் மன்னா நீர்!
சோம யாகத்தை நடத்துவேன் முன்னின்று.

யாகப் பொருட்களைச் சேகரிப்பீர் மன்னா!
யாகம் நடக்க வேண்டும் மிகச் சிறப்பாக.

சோமபானம் தருவேன் அஸ்வினி தேவருக்கு,
கோபம் கொண்டு இந்திரன் தடுத்த போதிலும்.

திரும்பச் சென்றான் சர்யாதி தன் அரசியுடன்;
விரும்பிச் சேகரித்தான் யாகப் பொருட்களை.

வரவழைத்தான் வசிஷ்டர் முதலான ரிஷிகளை;
வரவழைந்தான் மருமகன் ச்யவன முனிவரை.

வந்தனர் தேவர்கள் சோம யாகத்துக்கு; பிறகு
வந்தனர் அஸ்வினி தேவர்களும் யாகத்திற்கு.

அவர்களைக் கண்டதும் குழம்பினான் இந்திரன்
"இவர்களை இங்கே வரவழைத்தது யார்?" என.

7#6b. Soma yaagam

Sage Chyavana told king Sharyaati,"I have married a pati vratha. She can never become a fallen woman. The Ashwini Devtaas saw her in the forest. They requested her to select one of them for her husband.

But Sukanya won over them through her sharp intellect. They gave me my eyesight and this deva sareeeram. Sukanya used her sharp intellect and has changed my ill fate.

I have promised the Ashwini Devatass that they will get to share the soma ras with the other Devaas. Indra may try to stop me from giving them the Soma rasa. But I have determined to give them the honor of sharing the soma ras with the other Devaas.You must conduct a soma yaaga in a very grand scale."

The king went back and collected everything needed for the Soma yaagaa. He invited all the sages like Vasishta. He invited his son in law sage Chyavana to perform the yaagaa.

All the people invited for the yaagaa turned up. The Ashwini kumaaraas also came to the soma yaaga. Indra got suspicious as to who had invited them and how turned up to visit and take part in a Soma yaagaa.

15b. தமோகுணம்

“முக்குணங்களுக்கும் அப்பாற் பட்டவன்
முக்கண்ணன் என்று அறிவாய் தக்கனே!

உயிர்களின் பாசங்களை நீக்க வேண்டியே
கயிலைநாதன் படைத்தான் முத்தொழிலை!

பிரமனுக்குத் தந்தான் படைப்புத் தொழிலும்,
பிரமனுக்கு தேவையான ராஜஸ குணமும்!

மாலுக்கு அளித்தான் காக்கும் தொழிலும்,
மாலுக்குத் தேவையான சத்துவ குணமும்.

அழித்தல் தொழிலைத் தாமே செய்தார்.
அழித்தலுக்குத் தேவை தமோ குணம்.

தமோகுணம் ஈசனுக்கு இயற்கையன்று!
தமோகுணம் ஈசனுக்குச் செயற்கையே!

மறைகள் அருளிச் செய்யும் நால்வருக்கு
இறைவன் வழங்குவான் அறிவுரை எனில்

ஈசனின் இயற்கை குணத்தை எல்லாம்
பூசனை செய்பவர் அறிய இயலுமோ?

6#15b. Thamo gunam.

Siva is beyond the three gunas. He wishes to liberate the jeeva from the bondage.

Hence he made the three divisions as creation, sustenance and destruction.

He made Brahma as the god of creation and gave him the necessary Rajo gunam.

He made Vishnu as the god of sustenance and gave him the sathva gunam needed by him.

He took charge of destruction himself.

For destruction he needs tamo gunam.

It is not his real nature. He just assumes it.

Understanding the true nature and greatness of Siva

is beyond the scope of even his sincere devotees.

23. குமார தாரிகை

அழகிய இளைஞனாக மாறிய ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்
ஆடித் திரிந்தார் மலைச் சரிவில் ஒருநாள்.

வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார் அந்தணர் ஒருவர்,
வயது முதிர்ந்தவர் தன்னந் தனியாளாக!

கூனி விட்ட முதுகு; வலுவிழந்த கால்கள்,
பனி மறைக்கும் கண்கள், பசியுடன் தாகம்!

துணைக்கு வந்த மகனைத் தேடிக் கொண்டு,
‘ துணைக்கு வந்தவன் எங்கே போய்விட்டான்?

தண்ணீர் எடுக்கச் சென்றவன் வரவில்லையா?’
கண்ணீருடன் தேடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார் அவனை!

முள்ளிலும், கல்லிலும் அவர் நடப்பது கண்டு,
உள்ளம் வெண்ணையானது ஸ்ரீனிவாசனுக்கு!

“இறைவா! ஏன் நான் உயிரோடு உள்ளேன்?
இருக்கிறேன் ஒரு பாரமாக மற்றவர்களுக்கு!

வாட்டி வதைக்கின்றது முதுமையில் வறுமை.
வாழ்வதால் ஒரு பயன் இல்லையே இனி நான்”

மெள்ளத் தடவினான் முதுகை ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்,
“துள்ளும் இளமையோடு இருக்க விருப்பமா?”

“கேலி செய்கிறாயா தம்பி கிழவன் என்னை? என்
வேலைகளைச் செய்ய முடிந்தாலே போதுமே!

சேவை செய்வேன் இறைவனுக்கு முடிந்தவரை,
தேவை இல்லை துள்ளும் இளமை !” என்றார்.

“சுனைக்கு அழைத்துப் போகிறேன் முதலில்;
நனைத்தால் குறையும் உடலின் உஷ்ணம்.”

நீரில் முங்கி எழுந்தவர் மாறி விட்டிருந்தார்!
நிமிர்ந்து விட்ட முதுகு; இறுகிய தசைகள்!

நூறு வயது குறைந்து விட்டது – பதி
னாறு வயது வாலிபனாக மாற்றியது!

காணோம் கரையில் இருந்த இளைஞனை;
நாரணன் காட்சி தந்தான் புன் முறுவலுடன்.

“நித்திய கர்மங்களைச் செய்வீர் முன்போல்.”
பக்தியுடன் விழுந்தார் கால்களில் அந்தணர்.

முதியவரை இளையவராக ஆக்கிய சுனைக்குப்
புதிய பெயர் கிடைத்தது குமார தாரிகை என்று!

VENKATESA PURAANAM

#23. Kumaara Thaarigai

Srinivaasan went dancing and singing on the Seshaachalam as a young happy lad. He saw an old Brahmin walking with faltering steps. His back was bent and his legs were weak. His eyes were misty and he appeared to be very hungry, thirsty and tired.

He was looking for someone – may be his son who had gone to fetch drinking water and had not come back. Sreenivaasan’s heart melted to see the old, feeble man walk on the rough terrain.

The old man lamented loudly, ‘Why am I still alive ? What is the purpose of my living except to become a burden to my family. Poverty and old age torture me. I do not see any point in my living”

Sreenivaasan went to the old man and stroked gently on his bent back. “Do you wish to become young once again, oh grand father?”

The old man felt hurt and said, “Surely you must be making fun of me! I will be more than happy to be able to do my work without troubling anyone any more.”

“Let us go to the pond and wet your body. Your heat as well as thirst will disappear.” The lad led the old man to the water body . The old man immersed himself in it a slowly.

When he came up again he was transformed to a lad not more than sixteen years old. His back had become straight. His muscles were firm and he was hale, healthy and robust.

He searched for the lad who performed this miracle but he was not to be found. Instead he saw lord Sreenivaasan with a smiling face. The lord blessed him and said,”Do your nithya karma as before and serve the others well!”

The theertam got a new name as Kumaara thaarigai since it transformed an old man into a kumaran.

7#6c. சோம பானம்

பிரித்துத் தந்தார் சோம பானத்தைத் தான்
கூறியபடி ச்யவன முனிவர் தேவர்களுக்கு.

"மருத்துவர்கள் ஆவார்கள் இவ்விருவரும்.
அருந்தக் கூடாது இவர்கள் சோம பானத்தை."

தடை செய்தான் இந்திரன் ச்யவன முனிவரை;
"கிடைக்கக் கூடாது இவர்களுக்கு சோமரசம்!"

சினம் கொண்டார் ச்யவன முனிவர் - 'தன்
இனத்தவர் மீது துவேஷம் கொள்வதா?' என.

"சூரியனின் குமாரர் அஸ்வினி தேவதைகள்;
கூறுவாய் குறை என்ன இவர்கள் வாழ்வில்?"

விடவில்லை இந்திரன் அப்போதும் அவரை;
தடை செய்தான் முனிவரை மீண்டும் மீண்டும்.

ச்யவன முனிவர் கொண்டார் அதிக சினம்.
ச்யவனர் கூறினார் இந்திரனிடம் தெளிவாக;

"தந்தனர் எனக்கு அழகை, இளமையை.
தந்தனர் எனக்கு மீண்டும் கண் பார்வை.

தருவேன் இவர்களுக்கு சோமபானம் நான்;
தருவதற்காகவே செய்கின்றோம் சோமயாகம்.

வஞ்சனையாகக் கெடுத்தாய் அகலிகையை.
வஞ்சனையாகக் கொன்றாய் விருத்திரனை!

எந்த விதத்தில் தாழ்ந்து விட்டனர் உனக்கு?
இந்திரா! இந்த அஸ்வினி தேவதைகள் கூறு."

7#6c. Soma paanam

Sage Chayavana distributed the soma rasa as promised, to all the Devaas including the Ashwini Devataas. Indra stopped the sage from giving it to the Ashwini Devatas saying, "These two are the vaidhya among Devaas. They are not allowed to drink Soma rasa."

Sage Chyavana got angry with Indra for he hated his own race of Devaas. He told Indra,"Aswini Devataas are the sons of Sun God. What is wrong with them that you refuse the share Soma rasa with them?" But Indra kept interfering with the distribution of Soma rasa.

Now Sage Chyavana lost his patience and said," These two Ashwini Devataas restored my eyesight and gave me my youthful Deva sareeram. I will give them soma rasa as I have promised. In fact the Soma yaaga is being performed only to give them their share of the Soma rasa.

Indra! You raped Ahalya Devi be deceiving her. You killed Vrithraasuran by treachery. These two Ashwini Kumaraas are far better than you!'

15c. ததீசியின் சாபம்

இத்தனை மொழிகள் கூறிய பிறகும்
அத்தனையும் வீணாகிப் போயின.

தக்கன் சற்றும் ஏற்கவில்லை ததீசி
தக்க ஆதாரங்களுடன் கூறியவற்றை.

“பல மொழிகள் பகன்றும் பயனில்லை
சில தெய்வங்களை ஏற்கினும் ஏற்கேன்

சிவபெருமான் என்னும் இறைவனை!
அவிர் பாகமும் அளிக்கமாட்டேன்!

தொடங்கிய யாகம் முடங்கி விடாது!
நடத்தி முடிப்பேன் விரும்பிய வண்ணம்.”

கடும் சினம் கொண்டார் ததீசி முனிவர்;
கொடும் சினத்துக்கு அஞ்சியது ஊழித்தீ!

தளர்ந்தனர் தேவர்கள், நடுங்கியது மேரு,
வளர்ந்த சினத்தை அடக்கினார் முனிவர்;

“அழிக சிவனை இகழும் இந்த வேள்வி!
ஒழிக சிவனை விலக்கி வந்த தேவர்கள்.”

பிற தேவர்களுக்கும் அளித்தார் சாபங்கள்;
பிறகு வெளியேறினார் குழுவினருடன்.

6 # 15c. Dadeechi’s Curses.

This long argument presented by Dadeechi was completely futile. Dakshan would not agree with his point of view.

“I will never accept your explanations. Nor would I accept Siva as a god.
I will not offer him havis. The yagna will go on as planned. No one can stop it now”

Dadeeci became very angry. He cursed Dakshan as well the Deva present there. “May this yagna performed to insult Siva GET interrupted. May the Deva who have assembled here slighting Siva suffer for their mistake. ”

He cast curses on all the people present there and left the yaagasaala in huff with his group of disciples.

24. சங்கனன்

சங்கனன் ஆண்டு வந்தான் காம்போஜ நாட்டில்
சங்காச்யம் என்னும் நகரைக் கீர்த்தியுடன்.

கர்வம் மிகுந்து விட்டது பராக்கிரமத்தால்;
தர்மம் குறைந்து நலிந்து மெலிந்து விட்டது.

புண்ணியம் குறையலானது சங்கனனுக்கு
கண்ணியம் குறையலானது சங்கனனுக்கு.

விலகி விட்டனனர் பாதுகாத்த வீரர்கள்;
விலை போயினர் மறைந்திருந்த எதிரிக்கு.

வழக்கம் போல பழகவில்லை பிரதானிகள்;
குழப்பம் மேலிட்டது; குறைந்தது மதிப்பு.

அவதிப் பட்டனர் அவன் நாட்டு மக்கள்;
அவன் மேல் விழுநதது அந்தப் பழியும்!

ஆட்சியைக் கைப் பற்ற முயன்றனர்;
மாட்சிமை இல்லை அவர்களை அடக்க.

உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து என்ற நிலை உருவாக
எவருக்கும் தெரியாமல் தப்பி ஓடினான்!

பட்டத்து ராணியுடனும் இன்னமும் தன்
கட்டளைக்குப் பணியும் அமைச்சருடன்.

சேது கரையைச் சென்று அடைந்தனர்.
வேதனை தீரும் ராமேஸ்வரம் சென்றால்.

கடல் நீராடினான் சேதுவில் சங்கனன்
உடன் சென்று தரிசித்தான் இராமநாதரை.

அடைந்தான் சுவர்ணமுகி தீர்த்தத்தை!
விழைந்தான் வேங்கடத்தில் தவம் புரிய!

வட பகுதியைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தான் சங்கனன்;
“விட நேர்ந்த்தது நற்பணிகளைச் செருக்கால்.

அரியணையும் துறந்து அஞ்சி வாழ்கிறேன்!
சரியாகுமா மீண்டும் முன்போல இந்த நிலை?

நாட்டை அடைந்து ஆட்சி செய்வேனோ?
காட்டிலேயே காலத்தைக் கழிப்பேனோ?”

VENKATESA PURAANAM

24. Sankanan

Sankanan ruled the Sankaasyam city in Kaamboja Desam. He became arrogant with his growing popularity. Dharma took a back seat for him. His good fortune decreased fast.

Soon he had lost his command over his people. His courtiers behaved indifferently. The loyalty of his soldiers was secretly bought by his enemies. The army leaders looted the common people and the blame fell on Sankanan.

Some of his subordinated tried to depose him and usurp his kingdom. He could not control or subdue the miscreants. His life was in danger. He escaped with his wife and few loyal ministers before it was too late.

They reached Raameswaram which was famous for giving solace to the trouble people. They bathed in the sea and worshiped lord Raamanaathan.

Sankanan decided to do penance on the banks of SwarNamukhi in Venkataachalam. He chose the northern part of the hill.

He thought to himself, “I stopped doing many good deeds. I had to give up my throne and flee in order to hide and save my skin. Will things return to the old state of affairs or will I spend the rest of my life in this forest?

He did not know the answers for his questions.

7#7a. அரக்கன் மதன்

மதிக்கவில்லை இந்திரன் ச்யவனரின் சினத்தை.
அளிக்கவிட வில்லை இந்திரன் சோம பானத்தை.

"கொல்வேன் உம்மை விருத்திரனைக் கொன்றதுபோல!" எனச்
"செல்லும் தலை உடலிலிருந்து பிரிந்து தனியாக இந்திரா!"என

ஏசும் முனிவரைக் கொல்ல எண்ணினான் இந்திரன்;
வீசினான் வஜ்ஜிராயுதத்தைச் ச்யவன முனிவர் மீது.

பளபளவென மின்னியது இந்திரனின் வஜ்ஜிராயுதம்
மளமளவென முன்னேறியது இந்திரனின் வஜ்ஜிராயுதம்

அடக்கினார் ச்யவனர் வஜ்ஜிராயுதத்தை மந்திரத்தால்;
தொடங்கினார் அபிசார ஹோமத்தை ச்யவன முனிவர்.

தோன்றினான் மதன் என்னும் ஓரு வலிய அரக்கன்
தோன்றின தீக் கொள்ளிகள் போலக் கனன்ற கண்கள்

கரிய நிறத்துடன், கோரைப் பற்களுடன் இருந்தான்;
பெரிய உருவத்துடனும் கோரமாக இருந்தான் மதன்

விழுங்க விரும்பினான் வஜ்ஜிராயுதத்தை மதன்;
விழுங்க விரும்பினான் இந்திரனையும் மதன் .

நடுங்கி விட்டான் இதைக் கண்டு அஞ்சிய இந்திரன்
சடுதியில் நினைவு கூர்ந்தான் தன் குல குருவை.

உடனே தோன்றினார் தேவகுரு ப்ருஹஸ்பதி அங்கே.
திடமாக அறிவுரை வழங்கினார் அவர் இந்திரனுக்கு.

"ச்யவன முனிவரின் தவ வலிமையில் தோன்றியவன்!
ச்யவன முனிவர் மட்டுமே அவனைத் தடுக்க வல்லவர்.

சரணம் அடைவாய் இந்திரா ச்யவன முனிவரிடம்,
மரணம் அடையாமல் தப்ப இதுவே வழி!" என்றார்.

7#7a. Madan the demon

Indra did not pay any attention to sage Chyavana's words. He did not allow Chyavana to give soma rasa to the Ashwini Devataas.

He threatended the sage, "I will kill you as I had killed Viruthraasuran"
Sage Chyavana retorted, "You head will be separated from your body Indra!"

Indra became violent and threw his Vajraayudam on Sage Chyavana. The weapon gleamed menacingly and travelled threateningly towards Sage Chyavana.

The sage chanted a mantra and stopped the weapon's progress. He performed a homa and a demon named Madan emerged from it. He was dark hued and huge. He had long and strong canine teeth and his eyes shone like live coals.

Madan wanted to swallow the vajraayudam and Indra. Indra got frightened and thought of his kula guru Bruhaspati.

His kula guru appeared immediately and told Indra, "Madan has been created by Chyavana rushi and only he can control the demon. Surrender at the feet of Sage Chyavana - if you want to live longer".

16. தக்கனின் வேள்வி

ததீசி சென்றவுடன் தொடங்கி விட்டன
தீய சகுனங்கள் அந்த யாக சாலையில்.

அறுந்து விழுந்தன தக்கனின் கொடிகள்.
நெருங்கி வந்தன கழுகுகள், காக்கைகள்;

தானே கழன்றது வேதவல்லியின் தாலி!
தக்கன் அஞ்சவில்லை இச்சகுனங்களால்.

பிரமன், திருமாலை வழிபட்டான் தக்கன்.
பிற தெய்வங்களுக்கும், தேவர்களுக்கும்,

பிற முனிவர்களுக்கும், விருந்தினருக்கும்,
மருகர்களுக்கும் செய்தான் உயரிய சிறப்பு

குவித்தது உணவு வகைகளைக் காமதேனு!
குவித்தன ஆடைகளை, அணிகலன்களை,

சிந்தையைக் கவரும் பொன் மணிகளை,
சிந்தாமணி, சங்க நிதி, பதும நிதிகள்!

அந்தணர் அவாக் கெட உண்ட பின்னர்
ஆடை, அணிகள், ஆக்களைப் பெற்றனர்.

கருடனும், அன்னமும், ஐராவதமும்,
எருமைக் கடாவும், ஆட்டுக் கடாவும்,

ஒரு புறத்தில் ஒலித்தபடி நின்றன.
ஒரு புறத்தில் நடித்தனர் அரம்பையர்.

குளங்களில், சோலைகளில், தேவர்கள்
இளம் பெண்களுடன் ஆடி மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

வேதவல்லி, மகள்கள், அயிராணி,
தேவமகளிர் அளவளாவி இருந்தனர்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

KANDA PURAANAM - DAKSHA AKAANDAM

6#16. Dakshan’s yaaga.

As soon as Dadeechi left, bad omens appeared in the yaagasaala. Dakshan’s flag got cut and fell down. Vultures and crows circled the place. Vedavalli’s mangalsutra came off by itself.

Dakshan paid no attention to the ill omens. He worshiped Brahma and Vishnu. He treated the rushis, Deva and his own sons in law with very great respect and did honors to them.

Kamadhenu provided the feast for the guests. Sankhanidhi, Padmanidhi and Chintamani provided the costly gifts, jewels and silks for the guests.The Brahmins ate to their contentment and received rich gifts and cows.

The vaahanas of the gods the Garuda, the swan, the Airaavat, the buffalo of Yama and the ram stood in a corner. Apsaras were dancing. Devas were playing with pretty young girls in the ponds and in the gardens.

Vedavalli, her daughters and Indrani were conversing happily.
