#19d. சம்பரன்

தனக்கே வேண்டும் ரதி என்ற ஆசையால்
தவித்தான் பலநாட்கள் அசுரன் சம்பரன்.

தனித்து இருந்த அபலைப் பெண்ணைக்
கனிபோலக் கவர்ந்து சென்றான் சம்பரன்.

ஆகாய மார்க்கமாக அசுரன் செல்கையில்
ஆகத்தியம் செய்து நழுவினாள் ரதி தேவி.

விடுவித்துக் கொண்டு விழுந்தாள் நீரில்!
விழுங்கிவிட்டது ஒரு கடல்மீன் அவளை!

கடல் முழுவதும் குடைந்து தேடிய போதும்
கிடைக்கவில்லை ரதிதேவி சம்பரனுக்கு.

ரதிதேவியை விழுங்கிய மீன் ஒருநாள்
அதிசயமாக மீனவன் வலையில் சிக்கியது.

ஜொலித்த அந்த மீனைப் பிடித்த மீனவன்
அளித்தான் காணிக்கையாக சம்பரனுக்கு.

மீனின் வயிற்றை அறுத்தபோது அதில்
மானின் கண்ணுடைய பெண் இருந்தாள்.

இறைவன் அளித்த தன் அன்பு மகளாகக்
குறைவின்றி வளர்த்தான் ரதியை அசுரன்.

மனைவி ஆக்கிக் கொள்ள விரும்பியவள்
மகளாக வளருவதை அறியவே இல்லை.

நாரத முனிவர் அறியாத ரஹசியமா?
நாரத முனிவர் புரியாத கலகங்களா?

பிரத்யும்னனிடம் சென்று சொன்னார்
பிரிய மனைவி சம்பரனின் மகள் என்று!

ரதி தேவியை மீட்டு வரப் போருக்கு
அதி விரைவாகப் போனான் பிரத்யும்னன்.

#19d. Sambaran

Sambaran was an asuran. He fell madly in love with Rathi Devi and wished to possess her. Now that Rathi was all alone by herself he dared to kidnap her and take her to his abode.

Rathi Devi struggled to break free from his hold. She slipped and fell down into the sea below. A big fish swallowed her whole immediately. Sambaran searched for Rathi but could not find her. He went back to his place very disappointed.

The fish got caught in a net one day. The fisherman was stunned by the glow of this unusual fish. He thought it was best to present it to Sambaran. When the fish was cut open, a lively doe eyed girl was found inside the fish.

Sambaran accepted her as the gift of God in the form a lovely daughter. He never realized that it was the same Rathi Devi he wished to possess as a wife. The girl was brought up with love and care by Sambaran.

Narada knew that the lovely girl was none other than Rathi Devi. He went to Pradyumnan who was the reincarnation of Manmathan and told him about Rathi Devi.

Pradyumnan decided to free her from Samabaran. He led and army and left for a battle with Sambaran immeditaly.

#19e. ருக்மிணியின் விரதம்

போர் நடந்தது பல நாட்கள் தொடர்ந்து;
போர் நீடித்தது வெற்றி தோல்வி இன்றி!

போருக்குச் சென்ற தன் மகனை எண்ணித்
தீராத கவலை கொண்டாள் ருக்மிணி தேவி.

"குமாரனுக்குத் துன்பம் விளையக் கூடாது!"
உமாஸுதனை அவள் வணங்கி வேண்டினாள்.

சதுர்த்தி விரதத்தை மேற்கொண்டாள் - அங்கு
அது நிகழ்த்தியது போரில் அற்புதங்களை.

மந்த நிலை மாறிவிட்டது ஆறாவது நாள்
வந்த வேலை முடிந்தது பிரத்யும்னனுக்கு.

கொன்றான் போரில் சம்பரன் அசுரனை.
அன்பு மனைவி ரதியை மீட்டு மணந்தான்.

அழகிய ஜோடிக்குப் பிறந்த குழந்தை தான்
அநிருத்தன் என்னும் ஆண்களுள் அழகன்!

கண்டாள் பாணன் மகள் அவனைக் கனவில்;
கொண்டாள் தீராத மையல் அவன் மீது!

உடலை வாட்டி வருத்தியது விரக தாபம்;
உதவிக்கு வந்தாள் பிரிய சகி சித்ரலேகா.

தூங்கும் அநிருத்தன் தருவிக்கப் பட்டான்;
ஏங்கும் உஷையின் அந்தப்புரத்திற்கு!

கண் விழித்த அநிருத்தன் வியந்தான் அழகிய
கன்னி ஒருத்தியின் அறையில் இருந்ததால்.

ஆறாக் காதலை அவனிடம் உஷை கூற,
ஆட்கொண்டு அருளினான் அநிருத்தன்.

இன்ப சாகரத்தில் திளைத்தனர் இருவரும்,
இரகசியமாக அந்த அந்தப்புரத்திலேயே!

#19e. Rukmini's vratham

The war between Sambaran and Pradyumnan continued for many days. Neither victory nor defeat was in sight for either of them. Rukmini Devi worried about the welfare of her son. She prayed to Vinayaka to help her son win the war. She observed the Chathurthi vratham.

Changes happened in the war immediately. Samabarn was killed by Pradyumnan on the sixth day of the war. Pradyumnan freed Rathi Devi and married her. They got a lovely son whom they named as Aniruddhan.

Usha the daughter of Baanaasuran saw Aniruddhan in her dream and fell in love with him. She suffered the severe pangs of separation and her talented and smart friend Chitraleka took pity on her. She had Aniruddhan brought secretly to Usha's palace.

Anirudhdhan was surprised to find himself in the room of a princess who was madly in love with him. She spoke to him of her deep love. He returned her love. They started living as a man and wife secretly in Usha's palace.

#19f. பாணாசுரன்

மகனைக் காணாது பிரத்யும்னன் தேட,
மகன் இருக்கும் இடம் தெரியவில்லை!

களவுத் திருமணம் வெளியாகி விட்டது;
உளவுத் தொழில் எவரும் புரியும் முன்பே!

இன்பத்தின் விளைவு பெரும் துன்பமானது;
கன்னி கருவுற்றது அதிர்ச்சியை அளித்தது!

அந்தப்புரத்தில் ஆடவன் ஒளிந்திருந்தது
தந்தை பாணனுக்குச் சினத்தை அளித்தது!

கன்னியைக் கருவுறச் செய்தவன் போனான்
கண்ணிமைக்கும் நேரத்தில் சிறைச்சாலை!

தன் மகனைத் தேடி வருந்தி இளைக்கும்
தன் மகனிடம் கூறினாள் ருக்மிணிதேவி

சதுர்த்தி விரதத்தின் மகிமையைகளை!
அது புரியும் வியத்தகு விளைவுகளை!

சதுர்த்தி விரதம் செய்தான் பிரத்யும்னன்
அது வரவழைத்தது ஸ்ரீ நாரத முனிவரை!

பாணன் அநிருத்தனைச் சிறை செய்ததை
காணாது மகனைத் தேடுபவனுக்குக் கூற;

அளவற்ற சினத்துடன் போரிட்ட கண்ணன்,
களவுமணத் தம்பதியரை மீட்டு வந்தான்!

பிரிந்தவர் சேர்ந்ததும் பெருகியது இன்பம்,
விரத மகிமையினை உணர்ந்தது உலகம்!

#19f. BaaNaasuran

Pradyumnan searched for his missing son Aniruddhan everywhere but could not trace him. The secret wedding came to broad daylight when Usha became pregnant. The happiness of secret love was followed by the public shame of the pregnancy of an unwed girl.

When BaaNaasuran knew that the man responsible for this was hiding in his palace, he became very angry and put Aniruddhan in prison. Rukmini Devi told her son Prathyumnan who was madly searching for his missing son Aniruddhan the greatness of the Chathurthi vratham.

Pradyumnan performed Chathurti vratham. Narada appeared there and told them that BaaNaasuran was holding Anirudhdhan as a prisoner. Krishna waged a war with BaaNaasuran and freed Aniruddhan from the prison.

Usha and Aniruddhan were brought home by Krishna. There was joy everywhere now that the family members got united after a long separation. Once again the greatness of the Chathuti Vratham was proved to the world.

# 20a. ஆதிசேஷன்

கயிலாய நாதனைக் காண வந்த தேவர்கள்
மெய்யன்போடு தொழுதனர் ஈசன் உமையை.

இடத்தால் கிடைத்த உயர்வால் ஆதிசேஷன்
சடைமேல் இருந்து அடைந்தான் கர்வம்!

கர்வம் கொண்டால் கிடைக்கும் தண்டனை!
சர்வமும் அறிந்துள்ள பெருமான் அளிப்பார்.

கையால் பற்றி இழுத்தார் கைலாய நாதர்;
மெய்வருந்த ஓங்கி அடித்தார் தரையில்.

ஆயிரம் பிளவுகள் ஆகிவிட்டது அவன் சிரம்.
போய் விழுந்து மயங்கிவிட்டான் தரையில்!

திரிகாலஞானி, திரிலோக சஞ்சாரி நாரதர்
பரிவுடன் கேட்டார் " சேஷா! என்ன ஆயிற்று?"

அவரை நிமிர்ந்து பார்க்கவில்லை ஆதிசேஷன்;
அவருக்கு ஒரு பதிலும் கூறவில்லை அவன்.

ஞானக் கண்ணால் கண்டார் நடந்தவற்றை
ஞானம் புகட்டினார் நாரதர் ஆதிசேஷனுக்கு!

"இடத்தால் கிடைக்கும் பெருமையினால்
அடையக் கூடாது மனதில் பெரும் கர்வம்!

கொடுத்தவன் இந்தப் பெருமையை ஈசனே!
விடக் கூடாது இந்த நினைவை என்றுமே!

விக்கினங்கள் நீக்குபவர் நம் வினாயகர்;
விரதம் அனுஷ்டிப்பாய் நீ சதுர்த்தியன்று.

ஷடாக்ஷரம் ஓதியபடித் துதித்து வந்தால்
சர்வலோக நாயகன் புரிவார் திருவருள்"

# 20a. Aadhiseshan

When Deva came to Kailash they paid obeisance to Siva and Uma.

Adhiseshan who was on the matted coils on Siva's head also got worshiped by this act. He felt proud that he too got respected by all.

Siva read his thoughts. Siva loves to nip the pride in the bud. He pulled out Aadiseshan from his head and smashed his head on the ground.

The head broke into one thousand shreds and Adhiseshan fell faint.

Narada went by and asked him what had h append. Aadiseshan was filled with shame and did nor reply to him.

Narada told him, "We should not feel proud when we get lifted to place of honor. We must remember that it is also a gift of God and remain grateful to him always. Only Lord Vinayaka can remove all your trouble. Worship him and pray for his grace!"

#20b . ஆதிசேஷன்

பிரவாள நகரம் சென்றான் ஆதிசேஷன்,
விரதம் அனுஷ்டித்தான் பயபக்தியுடன்.

சித்தி, புத்தி தேவியர்களுடன் விநாயகர்
சிங்க வாகனத்தில் தோன்றி அருளினார்.

சிரம் தாழ்த்தி வணங்கினான் ஆதிசேஷன்;
பிரார்த்தித்தான்," என்னைக் காத்தருளும்!"

"கர்வத்தால் இழந்து விட்ட உன் சக்திகள்
சர்வமும் உன்னை வந்தடையும் மீண்டும்!

தரையில் அடித்ததால் ஏற்பட்ட பிளவுகள்
சிரங்களாக மாறிவிடும் இப்போது முதல்.

தாங்கி வருவாய் ஆயிரம் தலைகளுடன்
தரணியை முன் எப்போது போலவே நீ!

ஈசன் சடை மீது ஐந்து தலைகளுடன்
இருந்து வருவாய் நீ எப்போதும் போல.

இன்னமும் நீ மாறுவாய்! இனி எனது
இனிய உத்தர பந்தனமாகவும் ஆவாய்!

விஸ்வரூபம் எடுத்தார் விநாயகபிரான்!
வயிற்றைச் சுற்றி அணிந்தார் அவனை.

விநாயகர் அருளால் இழந்தவைகளை
வெற்றியுடன் பெற்றான் ஆதிசேஷன்.

#20b. aadhiseshan

Aadhiseshan went to the City called PravaaLa and observed the Chathurti vratham. Vinayaka appeared to him accompanied by Siddhi Devi and Buddhi Devi on Simha vaahana. Aadhiseshan prayed to him, "Please save me!" Vinayaka blessed him and said,

"You will regain all that you have lost due to your pride. The thousand shreds of your head caused when it was smashed on the ground will become thousand heads. You will carry the world on your heads as before. You will be on Siva's jada as a five headed snake. You will become my Udhara bandhan also now!"

He took viswarropam and tied Aadiseshan around hid waist. Adiseshan was happy to get back his lost powers and become the udhara bandan of Vinayaka.

#21a. புருசுண்டி

ஸஹஸ்ரபுர மன்னன் ஆவான் சூரசேனன்,
ஸகல நற்குணங்களும் பொருந்தியவன்.

சூரியனை நிகர்த்த விமானம் ஒன்று
பாரில் இறங்குவதைக் கண்ணுற்றான்.

தூதர்களை அனுப்பினான் அறிந்து வர;
தூதர்கள் காட்டினர் இறங்கிய இடத்தை!

தகதக வென்ற தங்கவிமானத்தில் வந்து,
தரையில் இறங்கியவன் தேவராஜன்.

வணங்கினான் இந்திரனை வலம் வந்து!
"வந்த பணி என்னவோ?" வினவினான்.

"பூவுலகின் விந்தைகளை எல்லாம்
தேவர்கள் அறிவது நாரதர் மூலமே.

மகான் ஒருவரைப் புகழ்ந்தார் நாரதர்.
மகத்துவம் ஆகும் அவர் வேழமுகம்.

விநாயகர் மேல் கொண்ட பக்தியால்
விநாயகர் போல் அடைந்தார் தோற்றம்!

புருசுண்டி என்னும் புண்ணிய புருஷனை
தரிசித்துத் திரும்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தேன்.

பாவி ஒருவனின் பார்வை பட்டதும்
பாதை மாறி விமானம் இறங்கியது!

விமானத்தை விண்ணில் எழுப்புவதற்கு
விநாயகர் விரதம் செய்பவர் தேவை.

சங்கட சதுர்த்தி விரதம் செய்பவரே
சங்கடத்தைப் போக்கிவிட முடியும்!"

சூரசேன மன்னன் வியப்பில் ஆழ்ந்தான்,
தேவராஜனைக் கேட்டான்," அவர் யார்?

விநாயகர் அருள் கிட்டியது எங்ஙனம்?
விநாயகர் தோற்றம் கிட்டியது எங்ஙனம்?"

#21a. Brusundi.

Soorasenan was the good king of Sahasrapuram. He was endowed with all the noble qualities. One day he saw a vimaanam glittering like the sun landing on the ground, deviating from its aerial path in the sky. He sent his messenger to find out everything about the vimaanam.

The messengers located the vimaanam and took their king to it. It was Indra himself who was traveling in it. Soorasenan circumnavigated the vimaanam, paid his respects to Indra and asked the purpose of his visit to the earth.

Indra replied, "We Deva learn about all the wonderful things happening on the earth through Narada. One day Narada praised a mahaan. His greatness was that his face resembled the face of Vinayaka. I visited him and was going back to swarga.

One sinner eyed my vimaanam and it landed abruptly. Now to make it rise again I need the help of a person who performs Sankata Chathurthi vratham . Can you please help me to find a Person in your country who observes Sankata Chathurti vratham?"

Soorasenan was astonished by what he had heard and asked Indra," Who is that mahaan? How did he get the grace of Vinayaka and his appearance besides?"

#21b. விப்பிரதன்

நந்துரம் என்ற அழகிய பட்டணம்
அந்த தண்டகாரண்யத்தில் இருந்தது.

வேடர்கள் குடியிருந்தனர் அதனருகே;
வேடன் விப்பிரதன் அவர்களில் ஒருவன்.

கொடுமையே உருவானவன் விப்பிரதன்;
கடுமையே வடிவெடுத்தவன் விப்பிரதன்;

வழிப்பறி செய்து, உடமைகளைப் பறித்து,
வாழ்க்கை நடத்தி வந்தான் அவ்வேடன்!

அந்தணன் ஒருவனை நெருங்கினான்,
அந்தணன் அஞ்சி ஓடத் துவங்கினான்.

காடு மேடு பாராது ஓடிச் சென்றவனை
வேடனால் பிடிக்கவே முடியவில்லை.

ஓடிக் களைத்து இளைத்துப் போனான்!
ஒன்றும் கிடைக்கவில்லை அன்றைக்கு!

தடாகம் ஒன்று தென்பட்டது வழியில்;
தடாக நீரை அள்ளி அள்ளிப் பருகினான்.

தண்ணீரை அருந்திய பின்னர் கரையில்
கண்ணயர்ந்தான் ஒரு பெரிய மரநிழலில்.

வித்தக விநாயகன் ஆலயம் அருகே!
முத்கல முனிவர் வந்தார் அவ்வழியே.

"அந்தணன் தப்பி விட்டான் ஆயினும்
இந்த மனிதனைத் தப்ப விடமாட்டேன்!"

ஓங்கிய வாளுடன் நெருங்கினான் அவரை
ஓங்கிய கரம் தானாகத் தாழ்ந்ததெப்படி?

முனிவரின் கனிவான பார்வையால் ஒரு
மனிதனாக மாறிவிட்டான் விப்பிரதன்!

தீய குணங்கள் மாயமாக மறைந்தன;
நேய குணங்கள் நொடியில் வளர்ந்தன.

#21b. Viprathan

Nanduram was a city in the outskirts of DandakaaraNyam. Some hunters were living near it. Viprathan was one of them. He was the personification of cruelty. He was harsh and merciless. He waylaid the travelers and looted their belongings.
He had made this his way of living.

One day he saw an Brahmin and closed in on him with a drawn sword. But the Brahmin took to heels and ran for his life like one possessed. Viprathan was unable to catch up with him. He felt very dejected since he had got nothing on that day.

He was hungry and thirsty. He drank the cool and refreshing water from a pond and stretched himself in the shade of a big tree on the bank of the pond. There was Vinayaka temple nearby.

Mudgala rushi came that way. Viprathan eyed him and told himself, "The Brahmin managed to escape by running faster than me. I shall never allow this man to escape"

He approached the rushi with his sword raised. But his hand lowered by itself when the sage cast a merciful glance on the sinner. He was instantaneously reformed to a good man and all his bad qualities disappeared in a flash of a second.

#21c. விப்ரதன்

கண்களில் வழிந்த கண்ணீரால் முனிவரின்
கால்களைக் கழுவினான் வேடன் விப்ரதன்.

"அறிவில்லாத வேடன் நான் ஒரு மூடன்!
பிறவியிலேயே கொண்டேன் துர்குணம்.

புனிதனாக்கி மனிதன் ஆக்கி விட்டீர்கள்.
இனிப்பிறவா பேரின்பம் பெற வேண்டும்;

கனிவுடன் காட்டுவீர் அதற்கான உபாயம்!"
பணிவுடன் வணங்கி வேண்டினான் வேடன்.

"தடாக நீரில் இறங்கி நீராடி வருவாய்;
இடைவிடாது இம்மந்திரத்தை ஓதுவாய்."

உபதேசித்தார் விநாயகர் திருமந்திரத்தை.
உடன் அளித்தார் காய்ந்த மரக் கிளையை.

"கம்பை நட்டு அது துளிர்க்கும் வரையில்
கம்பருகே அமர்ந்து ஜபித்து வருவாய்!"

கம்பை நட்டான்; நம்பி நீர் வார்த்தான்;
அன்புடன் ஓதினான் கணேசமந்திரத்தை.

ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் உருண்டு ஓடின.
ஆயினும் கம்பு துளிர்க்கவே இல்லை!

உறுதியில் குறையவில்லை விப்ரதன்;
அருகினில் அமர்ந்து ஜபித்து வந்தான்.

ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் முடிந்து பின்னர்
மாயக் கொம்பு துளிர்த்தது ஒருநாள்!

முத்கல முனிவரும் எழுந்தருளினார்;
அற்புதம் நிகழ்த்தினார் வந்த இடத்தில்!

கமண்டல நீரைத் தெளித்த உடனே - முக
மண்டலத்தில் தோன்றியது தும்பிக்கை!

நம்பிக்கை இழக்காத வேடனுக்கு ஒரு
தும்பிக்கை பரிசானது புருவமத்தியில்.

விப்ரதன் என்ற பெயர் இனி இல்லை!
அற்புத தும்பிக்கையால் இனி ப்ருசுண்டி!

#21c . Brusundi

Viprathan bathed the feet of the sage Mudgala with his copious tears. "I am a foolish hunter. I am a cruel man by birth. You have made me into a kind hearted man today. I do not want to take any more births. Please teach me how to achieve it!"

Mudgala told him to take bath in the pond. He taught the hunter the holy mantra of Vinayaka. He gave Viprathan a withered stick. "Plant this and water. Sit near it and chant the mantra I taught you everyday, till it grows fresh leaves."

Viprathan planted the stick. He watered it. He sat near it and kept on reciting the mantra taught to him by the sage.

One thousand years rolled by but the stick did not grow fresh leaves. Viprathan trusted the words of the sage. He sat near the stick and kept on chanting the mantra with unshaken faith.

One fine day tiny leaves appeared on the stick. At the same time the sage Mudgala also appeared there. The hunter paid his obeisance to the sage. Mudgala sprinkled some water on Viprathan from his kamandalam and a miracle took place.

A trunk similar to that of Vinayaka appeared on the face of Viprathan in between his eyebrows. He would be known by his new name Brusundi henceforth.

#21d. புருசுண்டி

உலர்ந்த கம்பு துளிர்த்தது; அது விந்தை!
உதித்த துதிக்கை விந்தையிலும் விந்தை!

புருவ மத்தியில் தோன்றிய தும்பிக்கையால்
உருவம் மாறிவிட்டது விக்கின ராஜர் போல்!

விப்ரதனைக் கட்டித் தழுவினார் முனிவர்,
"இப்பிறவியின் பயனை அடைந்துவிட்டாய்.

கற்ப காலம் வாழ்வாய் இந்த உருவோடு!
கற்பக விருக்ஷம் ஆகிவிடும் இந்தக் கம்பு;

எண்திசையும் பரவிடும் உந்தன் புகழ்;
எண்ணியதைத் தந்திடும் இந்த விருக்ஷம்."

ஏகாக்ஷரத்தை உபதேசித்தார் முனிவர்,
ஏகாக்ஷரத்தை ஜபித்தான் புருசுண்டி;

ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் உருண்டோடின.
அன்புடன் ஐங்கரன் காட்சி தந்தருளினான்!

துதிமாலைகளைச் சார்த்தினான் புருசுண்டி.
எதுவும் வரங்கள் தர வேண்டாம் என்றான்.

"பிறவாப் பேரின்பம் எய்தும் வழிகள் ஆம்
சரியை, கிரியை, யோகம் மற்றும் ஞானம்.

வேதம் சொன்னதைக் கைக் கொள்வாய்!
பேதம் என்றி என்னுடன் வந்து கலப்பாய்!"

ஐயன் ஆணைகளைப் பணிய புருசுண்டி
மெய்யன்புடன் நல்ல முயற்சி செய்தான்.

நாரதர் சென்றார் யமலோகம் காண்பதற்கு;
நாரதர் கண்டார் நரகத்தின் ஒரு பகுதியில்

கும்பி பாகத்தில் கிடந்தது உழலுகின்ற
தும்பிக்கை முனியின் முன்னோர்களை!

புண்ணிய சீலர் புருசுண்டியின் முன்னோர்
பண்ணிய தீவினைகள் தீர்ந்திடவேண்டும்.

"கும்பீபாகத்தில் துன்புறும் முன்னோரை
உம்மால் கடைதேற்ற முடியாதா" என்றார்.

சதுர்த்தி விரதத்தை அனுஷ்டித்த புருசுண்டி
முதியோரை விடுவித்தான் நரகத்திலின்று.

#21d. Brusundi

It was a miracle that the withered stick grew fresh leaves. It was greater miracle that Viprathan grew a trunk similar to that of Vinayaka. He resembled Vigneshwar very closely now.

Mudgala rushi embraced him and said, "You have achieved the aim of your janma. May you live for a very long time in this swaroopam. This stick will grow into a Karpaga Vruksham and will give whatever one wishes for. Your fame will spread in all the eight directions far and wide"

Mudgala taught him Ekaaksharam. Brusundi meditated on Vinayaka chanting the Ekaaksharam. One thousand years rolled on and finally Vinayaka appeared in front of him.

Brusundi praised the Lord as best as he could. He did not seek any boons except that he wanted to escape being born again in this world.

Vinayaka told him, "The means of escaping being born again are sariyai, kiriyai, yogam and gnaanam. Follow the words of the Vedas and you will merge with me inseparably at the end of this birth" Brusundi did his best to follow the path of Veda.

One day Narada went to visit Yamalokam. He was surprised to find the ancestors of Brusundi in the Kumbeebaagam of the Hell suffering a lot. He decided that they must be delivered from the sufferings of the Hell.

Narada told Brusundi that he could deliver his ancestors from the Hell by observing the Chathurti vratham. Brusundi did as advised and the suffering souls of his ancestors escaped from Hell and went to heaven.

#22a. கிருதவீர்யன்

காவிரித் தீரத்தில் அழகியதொரு நகரம்
காவல் மன்னன் கிருதவீர்யன் ஆண்டான்.

அன்பு மனைவி அழகி சுகந்தி - ஆயினும்
இன்பம் தருவதற்கு இல்லை ஒரு குழந்தை!

கானகம் சென்றனர் அந்த அரசனும் அரசியும்.
கடும் தவம் செய்தனர் அன்ன பானம் இன்றி.

நன்மையை விரும்பிடும் நாரதர் சென்றார்
மன்னன் தந்தையைக் காண பித்ருலோகம்!

"கடும் தவம் நீடித்தால் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து!
உடனே ஆவன செய் வம்ச விருத்திக்கு."

பிரமனை நாடிச் சென்றார் மன்னன் தந்தை,
"பிறக்க வேண்டும் சந்ததி, வழி கூறுங்கள்!"

விருத்தாந்தங்களை விவரித்தான் பிரமன்.
விளக்கினார் வாரிசு இன்மைக்குக் காரணம்.

முற்பிறப்பில் கிருதவீரியன் அந்தணன் சாம்பன்.
கற்புடைய மனைவி தந்தாள் மகன் கணேசனை.

இன்ப வாழ்க்கை வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர் அவர்கள்.
துன்பம் தொடங்கியது பீடித்த வறுமையினால்.

புசிப்பதற்கு உணவு இல்லாமல் ஆனது.
பசி வந்திடப் பத்தும் பறந்து போனது.

வழிப் பறி செய்து கிடைத்த பொருளால்
வழி பிறந்தது வயிற்றுப் பசி தீர்ந்திட.

காட்டு வழியே செல்லும் அந்தணர்கள்
மாட்டிக் கொண்டனர் பன்னிருவர் அன்று!

அடித்தே கொன்றான் அத்தனை பேரையும்;
எடுத்துக் கொண்டான் அவர் உடமைகளை;

குகையில் வீசினான் அவர்கள் உடல்களை;
குமாரனைக் காண விரைந்தான் இல்லம்!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#22a. Kruthaveeryan

Kruthaveeryan ruled over a city on the banks of the river Kaveri. Suganthai was his loving wife. But they did not have a child to fill the cup of their joy. The king and queen left the city and went to the forest to do severe penance.

They did not take any food or water and their health started deteriorating very fast. Narada wanted to help them somehow.
So he went to the pitru lokam and met Kruthaveeryan's father.

Narada told him, "This kind of penance will endanger the lives of your son and his wife. Do something and help them get a child soon"

Krutaveeryan's father went and met Brahma and sought his advice for the birth of a grandchild. Brahma told him the story of Kruthaveeryan in his previous birth and explained why he did not have a child.

In his previous birth Kruthaveeryan was a Brahmin called Saamban. He had a lovely wife and a son named Ganesan. They lived happily until dire poverty afflicted them.

There was nothing to eat and no means of livelihood. Saamban used to rob the passengers passing through a jungle and grab their belongings. This became his means of livelihood.

One day he saw twelve Brahmins passing by. He killed everyone of them and took their belongings. He threw their bodies in a cave and rushed home to meet his hungry son.
