6#14f. Ganapthy.

Indra lamented the atrocities and the crimes committed by Gajamukha asuran to Brahma. He conveyed it to Vishnu. Then they all went to Kailash to convey it to Siva. Siva promised them,”Do not worry any more. My son will put an to the atrocities of Gajamukha asuran”

One day Siva and Uma went to a mandapam filled with beautiful paintings. Uma watched the figure of an elephant emerge out of the pranava. A son appeared from that. He had crescent moon on his head, he had three eyes, five hands and a large hanging lip. An elephant faced son had emerged out of pranava.

He would become the leader of all the other gods. He would be the personification of knowledge but he himself would be beyond comprehension. He is the personification of mercy and the true meaning of the four Vedas. He paid obeisance to his parents and they blessed him.

“May all the troubles and hurdles vanish for anyone who contemplates on you before doing any task. May you become the leader of all the Ganas. You have to destroy the Gajamukha asuran. You will have to rid Vishnu of his saapam”

Siva and Uma were inside their temple and Ganapathy sat at its entrance.
 
6#14g. சூதாட்டம்

திருக்கயிலை சென்றார் மால் ஒருநாள்.
பிறைச்சூடி கூறினர் அன்னை உமையிடம்,
“இன்றைக்கு ஆடுவோம் சூதாட்டம்;
வென்றவருக்கு அளித்திட வேண்டும்

தன் அணிகலன்களைத் தோற்றவர்.
உன் அண்ணனே நடுநிலையாளர்!”

அன்னையும் உடன்பட்டாள் இதற்கு.
அண்ணன் திருமால் நடுநிலையாளர்.

சிவன் தோற்றான் அச் சூதாட்டத்தில்.
சிவன் கூறினார்,”நானே வென்றேன்!”

பந்தயப்படி அளித்துவிடு எனக்கு
உந்தை அணிவித்த ஆபரணங்களை!”

“நடுநிலையாளரே கூறுங்கள் இந்தக்
கடுமையான போட்டியில் இன்று

வென்றவர் யார்? தோற்றவர் யார்?”
“வென்றவர் சிவனே என்றார் மால்!”

அண்ணன் அண்ணலுக்கு சாட்சியா?
அன்னைக்கு எல்லை மீறியது சினம்.

“வஞ்சகமாகப் பொய் உரைத்த நீங்கள்
நஞ்சு மிகுந்த பாம்பாக மாறக்கடவீர்!”

கொடிய பாம்பு வடிவெடுத்தார் மால்.
அடிபணிந்தார் அண்ணல் சிவனாரை.

“இந்த வடிவம் என்று மறையும்?
சொந்த வடிவம் என்று அமையும்?”

“ஆலங்காட்டில் உள்ளது ஆலமரம்.
ஆலமரத்தடியில் உள்ளது பொந்து;

அமர்ந்து அதில் தவம் செய்வீர்.
ஆனைமுகனால் நீங்கும் சாபம்!”

பெருமான் கூறினான் அருளுடன்!
திருமால் அடைந்தார் ஆலங்காட்டை.

6#14g. The gambling and the lie

Vishnu went to Kailash one day. Siva wanted to play a prank. He told Uma, “We will play a game of dice. The loser must give all the ornaments to the winner!”

Uma agreed. Vishnu was made the judge.

Siva lost the game but claimed the prize as if he were the winner. Uma asked Vishnu “Who is the winner in this game?”

Vishnu lied and said,”Siva has won the game.” Uma got terribly angry at this lie. She cursed Vishnu to become a poisonous snake.

Vishnu asked Siva, When will I get saapa vimochanam? When will I regain my original form?”

Siva replied, “Go to Aalangaadu. There is huge banyan tree. It has a hole in its trunk. Live there an do penance. My son will come there and deliver you from the saapam.” Vishnu went to Aalangadu.
 
6#14h. யானைமுகன் அழிவு

யானைமுகக் கடவுளிடம் கூறினர் தேவர்
யானைமுக அவுணன் தரும் துயர்களை.
“யானைமுகனைக் கொல்வேன்!” எனக்கூறி
யானைமுகக் கடவுள் சென்றார் போர்க்களம்.

தோளில் தாங்கினான் கணபதியை அசலன்;
துணையாக உடன் சென்றன சிவகணங்கள்.

ஒற்றர்கள் ஓடிச் சென்று உடனே உரைத்தனர்
கொற்றவன் யானைமுகனிடன் செய்தியை!

சினம் கொண்ட அவுணன் புறப்பட்டு
இனத்தாருடன் வந்தான் போர்க்களம்.

படைகள் இரு கடலெனக் கலந்தன!
படைகள் மாறி மாறிப் பின்னடைந்தன.

யானைமுகக் கடவுளை முன்னே கண்ட
யானைமுகன் வினவினான்.”இது யார்?”

“சிவபெருமானின் மூத்த மகன் இவன்!”
“சிவன் எனக்கு அளித்த மேன்மைகளை

அறியாயோ நீ? சிவன் புதல்வனே!
சிறுவன் நீ என்பது உண்மையானது;

என்னோடு மோதும் ஆற்றல் அற்றவன்
இன்னுயிர் காத்துப் பிழைத்துப் போ!

என்னை வென்றிட இயலாது எவருக்கும்!
என்னுயிரைப் பறிக்காது படைக்கலன்கள்.”

6#14h. Gajamukha asuran.

The Deva told Ganapathy the atrocities committed by Gajamukha asuran.

Ganapathy got ready for a war. He was carried by Achalan on his shoulders.

The siva gana accompanied him.

The messengers warned Gajamukha asuran of the impending war.

He too came to the war front with his clan. The armies mixed and the war stated.

Gajamukha auran saw Ganapathy in his front and demanded to know who he was.

He was told that Ganapathy was the elder son Of Siva.

He spoke to Ganapathy now,

“Don’t you know about the boons Siva has bestowed on me? You are a mere child!

I am invincible. No weapon can kill me. You can still live long by running away from the battle field.”
 
6#14i. கஜமுகனின் போர்

அவுணன் கூறியது கேட்டு நகைத்தார்
ஆனைமுகக் கடவுள் அமர்க்களத்தில்!
“மேன்மைகளைத் தந்த பெருமானே
ஏன் கட்டளை இட்டார் அழித்துவிட?

உயிர் வாழ விரும்பினால் விட்டுவிடு
உயிர்களுக்குத் துன்பம் இழைப்பதை.

விண்ணுலகை இந்திரன் ஆளட்டும்!
மண்ணுலகைத் தொடர்ந்து ஆள்வாய்”

கணைமழை பொழிந்தான் அவுணன்
கணபதி மீது வில்லை வளைத்து!

எழுபடையினால் விலக்கினார்;
எழுபடை முறித்தது வில்லையும்.

எடுத்த அடுத்த வில்லை முறித்தார்.
அடுத்து எடுத்த தடியை உடைத்தார்.

மார்பில் அடி வாங்கிய அவுணன்,
சோர்ந்து நின்றான் சிறிது நேரம்.

பாசத்தை வீசினார் ஆனைமுகன்,
பாசத்தால் படையைக் கட்டினார்.

மழுப்படை அழித்தது நாற்படையை!
மகிழ்ந்தனர் தேவர் விண்ணில் நின்று!

கையிலுள்ள படைகளைச் செலுத்த
கைகட்டி நின்றன அவை இறையிடம்!

கொம்புகளில் ஒன்றை முறித்து
வம்பு செய்யும் அவுணன் மீது வீச

மார்பைப் பிளந்து நிலத்தில் வீழ்த்தி
சேர்ந்தது இறையின் கை நன்னீராடி!

ஆறாகக் காட்டில் பாய்ந்தது குருதி!
பேர் பெற்றது திருச்செங்காடு என!

6#14i. The war.

Ganapathy laughed on hearing the words of Gajamukha asuran. “Do you know why the same God who bestowed rare boons on you ordered me to destroy you? If you want to live on, stop harassing everyone. Return the ruler-ship of Swarga to Indra. You may rule over the world”

The asuran did not reply but started raining arrows on Ganapathy, who destroyed them easily with his ezhu. He broke the bow of the asuran who took out another bow which was also destroyed. He took out a dandam which was also destroyed.

Ganapathy hit the asuran on his chest. He stood dazed for a short while! Ganapathy threw his paasam binding the entire army and destroyed them with his ezhu. The devas rained flowers from the sky.

The asuran shot all his asthrams on Ganapathy. They stood respectfully without hurting him in anyway.
Ganapathy broke off one of his tusks and threw it on the asuran. It pierced through his chest, throwing him on the ground. It took a holy dip and returned to Ganapathy’s hands.

Blood flowed like a river and the place got the name Thiruch chengaadu due to the color of blood.
 
6#14j. பெருச்சாளி

மேன்மையான வரங்களால் அவுணன்
மீண்டும் வந்தான் உயிரோடு போருக்கு.
பழைய வடிவைத் துறந்து விட்டான்
புதிய வடிவெடுத்தான் பெருச்சாளியாக!

சினத்துடன் வந்தான் கணபதியைத் தாக்க;
கணத்தில் அழித்தார் அவன் பேராற்றலை!

இறங்கினார் அசலனின் தோளில் இருந்து;
ஏறினார் பெருச்சாளி அவுணன் முதுகில்!

ஆணவம் அழிந்த அவுணன் ஆகிவிட்டான்
ஆனைமுகக் கடவுளின் அரிய வாகனமாக.

மலர் மழை பொழிந்தனர் விண்ணில் தேவர்.
அருள் மழை பொழிந்தார் கணபதி தேவன்.

அஞ்சிய அசுர மன்னன் பறவையாக மாறித்
தஞ்சம் அடைந்தான் மேருவின் சாரலை!

திருச் செங்காட்டில் தொழுதார் கணபதி
ஒரு சிவ லிங்கத்தை அங்கு ஏற்படுத்தி.

இணை இல்லாத அந்தத் தலம் பின்னர்
கணபதீச்வரம் என்ற பெயர் பெற்றது.

6#14j. The bandicoot.

Gajamukha asuran was not killed. He returned to attack Ganapathy in the form of a bandicoot. Ganapathy conquered him in a moment. He got down from the back of Achalan and sat on the back of Gajamaukan turned into bandicoot.

Good sense dawned on the asuran and he became the vaahanaa of Ganapathy. Deva rained flowers. Ganapathy rained his grace and mercy. The asura king got frightened by these happenings. He changed into a bird and flew away to the safety of the Mount Meru.

Ganapathy established a Sivalingam at Thiruch chengaadu and worshiped Siva. This holy place became famous a Ganapatheeswaram later on.

 
6#15a. யானைமுகன் அருள்

அவுணனின் ஆணவத்தை அழித்த பின்னர்
தவம் செய்யும் திருமாலிடம் சென்றார்;
ஆலங்காட்டை அடைந்தார் கணபதி.
ஆலமரப் பொந்தில் பாம்புருவில் மால்!

ஆனைமுகனைத் தொழுத உடனேயே
அன்னையின் சாபம் நீங்கப் பெற்றார்.

திருக்கயிலை திரும்பினார் யானைமுகன்
விருப்பத்துடன் எழுந்தருளினார் அங்கு.

சிவனை வழிபட வந்த தேவர் முனிவர்கள்
இவரைத் தொழலாயினர் முதன் முதலில்.

“ஆனைமுக அவுணனுக்குச் செய்த சேவையை
ஆனைமுகக் கடவுளுக்கும் செய்வோம் இனி!

திருமுன்பு செய்யும் திருத் தொண்டுகளை
அருள் கூர்ந்து ஏற்றுக் கொள்வீரா நீங்கள்?”

தலையில் குட்டிக் கொண்டு அனைவரும்
தாழ்ந்து எழுந்தனர் இருசெவிகள் பற்றி!

அன்று முதல் எல்லோரும் புரிகின்றனர்
இன்று வரை இந்த வணக்கம் திருமுன்பு.

6#15a. The grace of Ganapathy.

After taming the Gajamukha asuran, Ganapathy went to Aalangaadu.
Vishnu was doing penance in the hole of a Banyan tree there,
in the form of a poisonous snake.

Ganapathy removed the curse laid by Uma and returned to Kailash.
Whoever came to worship Siva worshiped Ganapathy first.

They wanted to do the same seva they used to do to the asuran Gajamukhan.
So they rapped gently on their forehead three times.

They held their ears with their hands and did “Dhorbik karanam”.
This practice caught on and even today Ganapathy is worshiped in this manner.
 
6#15b. தமோகுணம்

“முக்குணங்களுக்கும் அப்பாற் பட்டவன்
முக்கண்ணன் என்று அறிவாய் தக்கனே!
உயிர்களின் பாசங்களை நீக்க வேண்டியே
கயிலைநாதன் படைத்தான் முத்தொழிலை!

பிரமனுக்குத் தந்தான் படைப்புத் தொழிலும்,
பிரமனுக்கு தேவையான ராஜஸ குணமும்!

மாலுக்கு அளித்தான் காக்கும் தொழிலும்,
மாலுக்குத் தேவையான சத்துவ குணமும்.

அழித்தல் தொழிலைத் தாமே செய்தார்.
அழித்தலுக்குத் தேவை தமோ குணம்.

தமோகுணம் ஈசனுக்கு இயற்கையன்று!
தமோகுணம் ஈசனுக்குச் செயற்கையே!

மறைகள் அருளிச் செய்யும் நால்வருக்கு
இறைவன் வழங்குவான் அறிவுரை எனில்

ஈசனின் இயற்கை குணத்தை எல்லாம்
பூசனை செய்பவர் அறிய இயலுமோ?

6#15b. Thamo gunam.

Siva is beyond the three gunas.

He wishes to liberate the jeeva from the bondage.

Hence he made the three divisions as creation, sustenance and destruction.

He made Brahma as the god of creation and gave him the necessary Rajo gunam.

He made Vishnu as the god of sustenance and gave him the sathva gunam needed by him.

He took charge of destruction himself.

For destruction he needs tamo gunam.

It is not his real nature. He just assumes it.

Understanding the true nature and greatness of Siva

is beyond the scope of even his sincere devotees.
 
6#15c. ததீசியின் சாபம்

இத்தனை மொழிகள் கூறிய பிறகும்
அத்தனையும் வீணாகிப் போயின.

தக்கன் சற்றும் ஏற்கவில்லை ததீசி
தக்க ஆதாரங்களுடன் கூறியவற்றை.

“பல மொழிகள் பகன்றும் பயனில்லை
சில தெய்வங்களை ஏற்கினும் ஏற்கேன்

சிவபெருமான் என்னும் இறைவனை!
அவிர் பாகமும் அளிக்கமாட்டேன்!

தொடங்கிய யாகம் முடங்கி விடாது!
நடத்தி முடிப்பேன் விரும்பிய வண்ணம்.”

கடும் சினம் கொண்டார் ததீசி முனிவர்;
கொடும் சினத்துக்கு அஞ்சியது ஊழித்தீ!

தளர்ந்தனர் தேவர்கள், நடுங்கியது மேரு,
வளர்ந்த சினத்தை அடக்கினார் முனிவர்;

“அழிக சிவனை இகழும் இந்த வேள்வி!
ஒழிக சிவனை விலக்கி வந்த தேவர்கள்.”

பிற தேவர்களுக்கும் அளித்தார் சாபங்கள்;
பிறகு வெளியேறினார் குழுவினருடன்.

6 # 15c. Dadeechi’s Curses.

This long argument presented by Dadeechi was completely futile.

Dakshan would not agree with his point of view.

“I will never accept your explanations. Nor would I accept Siva as a god. I will not offer him havis,

The yagna will go on as planned. No one can stop it now”

Dadeechi became very angry. He cursed Dakshan as well the Deva present there.

“May this yagna performed to insult Siva be interrupted. May the Deva who have assembled here

slighting Siva suffer for their mistake. ” He cast curses on all the people present there and left the

yaagasaala in huff with his group of disciples.
 
6#16. தக்கனின் வேள்வி

ததீசி சென்றவுடன் தொடங்கி விட்டன
தீய சகுனங்கள் அந்த யாக சாலையில்.
அறுந்து விழுந்தன தக்கனின் கொடிகள்.
நெருங்கி வந்தன கழுகுகள், காக்கைகள்;

தானே கழன்றது வேதவல்லியின் தாலி!
தக்கன் அஞ்சவில்லை இச்சகுனங்களால்.

பிரமன், திருமாலை வழிபட்டான் தக்கன்.
பிற தெய்வங்களுக்கும், தேவர்களுக்கும்,

பிற முனிவர்களுக்கும், விருந்தினருக்கும்,
மருகர்களுக்கும் செய்தான் உயரிய சிறப்பு

குவித்தது உணவு வகைகளைக் காமதேனு!
குவித்தன ஆடைகளை, அணிகலன்களை,

சிந்தையைக் கவரும் பொன் மணிகளை,
சிந்தாமணி, சங்க நிதி, பதும நிதிகள்!

அந்தணர் அவாக் கெட உண்ட பின்னர்
ஆடை, அணிகள், ஆக்களைப் பெற்றனர்.

கருடனும், அன்னமும், ஐராவதமும்,
எருமைக் கடாவும், ஆட்டுக் கடாவும்,

ஒரு புறத்தில் ஒலித்தபடி நின்றன.
ஒரு புறத்தில் நடித்தனர் அரம்பையர்.

குளங்களில், சோலைகளில், தேவர்கள்
இளம் பெண்களுடன் ஆடி மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

வேதவல்லி, மகள்கள், அயிராணி,
தேவமகளிர் அளவளாவி இருந்தனர்.

6#16. Dakshan’s yaaga.

As soon as Dadeechi left, bad omens appeared in the yaagasaala. Dakshan’s flag got cut and fell down. Vultures and crows circled the place. Vedavalli’s mangalsutra came off by itself.

Dakshan paid no attention to the ill omens. He worshiped Brahma and Vishnu. He treated the rushis, deva and his own sons in law with very great respect and did honors to them.

Kamadhenu provided the feast for the guests. Sankhanidhi, Padmanidhi and Chintamani provided the costly gifts, jewels and silks for the guests.The Brahmins ate to their contentment and received rich gifts and cows.

The vaahanas of the gods the Garuda, the swan, the Airaavat, the buffalo of Yama and the ram stood in a corner. Apsaras were dancing. Devas were playing with pretty young girls in the ponds and in the gardens.

Vedavalli, her daughters and Indrani were conversing happily.
 
6#17. வேள்வி

வேள்வித் தலைவன் தொடங்கினான்
வேள்வியை மூவகைத் தீக்களுடன்.
வேள்வியை நடத்துபவர்களுக்கு
வேண்டிய கட்டளைகளை இட்டான்.

வேள்வி மறையைச் சொன்னார் ஒருவர்
வேள்வியைச் செய்தார் மற்றொருவர்

தேவர்களின் பெயரை அழைத்தார் ஒருவர்
தேவர்களுக்கு அவியை அளித்தார் ஒருவர்.

குறை ஏதும் ஏற்படாமல் பாதுகாக்க
அருகில் அமர்ந்து இருந்தார் ஒருவர்.

அவிர் பாகம் அளித்தனர் அவர்கள்
சிவனைத் தவிர பிற தேவர்களுக்கு!

6#17. The Yagna.

Dakshan the yejamaan of the yaagaa started the yaagaa with the three kinds of fire.

He gave the necessary orders to the other performers of the yaagaa.

The mantras were chanted by a person. Another person performed the yaaga.

The third person called out the names of the Deva.

The fourth person offered the Deva his share of Havis.

Another person sat there making sure that everything was done as per the rules of the yaagaa.

They called out and offered the share of havis to all the Devas excluding Siva.
 
6#18a. இறைவியின் வருகை

தக்கனின் வேள்வியைப் பற்றி நாரதர்
தக்க சமயத்தில் உரைத்தார் சிவனிடம்.
தக்கன் வேள்வியைக் காணும் அவா
தக்கன் மகள் மனத்தில் வளர்ந்தது!

முக்கண்ணனிடம் அனுமதி கேட்டாள்
தக்கன் யாகத்தைக் கண்டு வருவதற்கு.

“சிறுமை அடைவாய் வேள்வியில்!
ஒரு போதும் செல்ல வேண்டாம் நீ!”

கணவன் தடுத்தும் கேட்கவில்லை;
“கணப்பொழுதில் வருவேன்” என்றாள்.

மகளைக் கண்ட தக்கன் மகிழவில்லை;
மகளைக் கேலி செய்து பேசலுற்றான்!
“சிவனார் மனைவியார் எங்கு வந்தீர்?
அவனுக்கே அழைப்பு இல்லை இங்கே!”


“தங்கையருக்குச் செய்தீர் சிறப்புக்கள்;
உங்கள் மருகர்களுக்கு மேன்மைகள்!


திங்கள் அணி பிரான் செய்த தவறென்ன?
எங்களை நீர் வெறுத்து ஒதுக்குவது ஏன்?”

6#18a. Devi arrives.

Deva rushi Narada told Siva about Dakshan’s yaagaa.

Daakshaayani wanted to attend it.

She asked for Siva’s permision to go over there.

Siva knew Dakshan’s hatred for them only too well.

He did not want her to go there.

But Devi insisted and left for her father’s yaagaa.

Dakshan was not happy to see her. He asked her in ridiculing voice,

” what business does Siva’s wife have in this place where Siva himself in not welcome”

Devi asked her father, “You treat with love and respect my younger sisters and their husbands.

Why do you hate me and Siva thus?”
 
6#18b. தேவியின் சினம்

“முக்கண்ணன் பெற்றுள்ளது என்ன குணம்?
முக்குணங்களிலும் இழிந்த தமோகுணம்!
அழிக்கும் தொழில் செய்கின்றான் சிவன்.
இழிந்த நிலை அடைந்து விட்டாய் நீயும்!

ஆணவம் கொண்டுள்ளீர்கள் இருவரும்
ஆதலால் நான் உங்களை வெறுக்கிறேன்!

உன் தங்கையர் எனக்கு மிக இனியவர்
என் மருகர்கள் என் மனதுக்கு இனியவர்.

சிறப்புக்கள் செய்தேன் அவர்களுக்கு
வெறுப்பு உண்டு உங்கள் இருவரிடம்.

புகழ்கின்றனர் என்னை மால், பிரமன்.
இகழ்கின்றீர்கள் என்னை நீயும், சிவனும்.

மாட்டின் மேல் ஏறும் மருமகனுக்கு
மறந்தும் நான் சிறப்புச் செய்யேன்!

அழையாத வீட்டில் நுழைந்தவளுக்கு
அணுவளவும் நான் சிறப்புச் செய்யேன்!”

6#18b. Devi’s anger.

“Do You want to know the reason why I hate you and Siva?

What is the nature of Siva?He is taamasic in temperament.

He is the one who destroys! You as his wife is no more respectable than him.

You both are headstrong and arrogant. That is why I hate you!

Your sisters are sweet to me. Their husbands are respectable.

I will love them and honor them but you two I will never cherish!

Brahma and Vishnu pay obeisance to me. But you and Siva insult me.

Siva rides on a common bull. I will never respect him.

You have come uninvited. I will never love you!”

Dakshan rudely replied to Devi.
 
6#18c. தேவியின் சீற்றம்!

உமையின் சினம் எல்லை மீறிவிட்டது!
இமைப் பொழுதில் நடுங்கின அனைத்தும்.
நீரும், நெருப்பும், முகிலும் நடுங்கின;
மாலும், பிரமனும் யாவரும் நடுங்கினர்;

தேற்றினாள் தேவியைத் தோழி விமலை
சாற்றினாள் தேவி தந்தை தக்கனிடம்,

“என்னை இகழ்வது ஒரு பொருட்டல்ல!
என் தலைவனையும் இகழ்ந்தாய் நீ!

குறைகளுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டவர் அவர்
மறைகள் புகழ்கின்ற நாயகர் அவர்.

சிவா எனும் ஒரு சொல்லே தரும் முக்தி
வாசியுடன் வெறுக்கும் உன் கதி என்ன?

ஒறுக்கும் வேளை வந்தாள் ஒறுப்பார்”

கயிலை மீண்டாள் தாட்சாயணி தேவி
கயிலை நாதன் கூறியது மெய்யானது!

வேதனையுடன் அன்னை கூறினாள்
நாதனிடம்,”வேள்வியை அழியுங்கள்!”

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.
