2 (# 5c). நல்லியல்புகள்.

"திருமணத்துக்கு உரிய மணமகளின்
சிறப்புக்களை உரைக்கின்றேன் நான்.

தந்தை, தாயை இழந்தவள் கூடாது;
தங்கை, தமக்கை அற்றவள் கூடாது;

உடன் பிறந்தவன் இல்லாதவள் கூடாது,
ஒற்றைப் பெண்ணானவளும் கூடாது;

உறவினர் அற்றவள், நோயாளியின் மகள்,
உயர்க்குடிப் பிறவாதவள், அழகற்றவள்;

விலங்குகளின் பெயரை உடையவள்;
விலக்கிவிட வேண்டிய பிற சமயத்தவள்;

செவிடர், முடவர், ஊமையர் கூடாது;
தெரு வாசலில் நின்று நோக்குபவள்;

மிகுதியாக அலங்கரித்துக் கொள்பவள்,
மிகுதியாக உணவு உட்கொள்ளுபவள்;

பேருறக்கம் உடையவள், முதிர்ந்தவள்,
கோத்திரத்தில் நம்மை ஒத்தவள் கூடாது;

நெட்டையானவள், மெலிந்தவள் கூடாது;
குட்டையானவள், பருத்தவள் கூடாது.,

கருநிறம், பொன்னிறம், பசப்பையுடையவர்;
குருதி நிறம் கொண்டவர்கள் கூடவே கூடாது.

நாணம் இல்லாதவள், பெரு வலிவுடையவள்;
நகைப்பவள், சினம் மிகுந்தவள் கூடாது,

அத்தன், அம்மை சொல் கேளாதவள்;
கூத்துப் பார்க்க விரும்புபவள் கூடாது.

சிவனிடத்தில் அன்பு கொள்ளாதவள்;
முனிவரை இகழ்பவள் கூடவே கூடாது.

அருள் அற்றவள், தீக் குணம் உடையவள்;
நிறை அற்றவள், தேவரைக் கல் என்பவள்;

இடி முழங்குவது போலப் பேசுபவள்;
இடுங்கிய கண்களை உடையவள்;

நரை மயிர், பெருங்கூந்தல் உடையவள்;
சிறுத்த கண்களை உடையவள் கூடாது;

நீண்ட மூக்கை உடையவள் கூடாது;
நீட்டிய பற்களும், வளைந்த கழுத்தும்

மயிர்ப்பரந்த கால்களை உடையவள்;
மனத்தைக் கவரும் அன்னநடை அற்றவள்;

உள்ளங்கைகளும், நகமும், வாயும்,
உள்ளங்கால்களும் சிவந்து இராதவள்;

இந்தக் குற்றங்கள் இல்லாதவள் ஆகிய
எந்தப் பெண்ணையும் மணப்பேன் நான்!"

பெண்மையின் நல்லியல்புகள் புதுமைப் பெண்களிடம்
அண்மைக் காலமாகக் காண அரிதாகி வருகின்றனவோ?

2 (#5 C). THE QUALITIES OF A GOOD BRIDE.

" Dear father! I shall enlist the good qualities
of a bride to be.

She should not have lost her parents.
She must have brothers and sisters.

She must be from a good family.
She must have several relatives.

She must not have sickly parents.
She must not be named after any animal.

She must not belong to another religion.
She must not be physically challenged.

She must not stand outside the home and gaze at the men passing by.
She must neither eat nor sleep too much nor decorate herself too much.

She must not be older than me.
She must not belong to the same gothram.

Her complexion must not be very dark,
vary fair or greenish yellow.
She must not be very tall or very lean.

She must not be very fat or very short.
She must not be very daring or very strong.

She must not laugh and get angry beyond decent limits.
She must obey her parents.

She should not wish to see vigorous entertainments.
She must have love for Lord Siva and the venerable sages.

She must be chaste, kind, good natured, and pious.
She must not have grey hair or too long a hair.

She must not speak like the thunder claps.
She must not have light coloured eyes like a cat.

She must not have a very long nose, large teeth, bent neck, or hairy legs.
She must walk like a swan.

Her palms, nails, mouth and feet must be pink in colour.
If you can locates such a girl, I am ready to marry her!"

Note:-
A good mental exercise to locate how many of our dear women still retain these delicate feminine qualities in the 21st Century!!!

2 (# 5 d). பெண் தேடுதல்.

உலகம் எங்கும் தேடினார் பெண்ணை;
உசாவினார் எதிர்ப்பட்ட முனிவர்களிடம்;

உசத்திய முனிவரின் உசத்தியான மகள்
விருத்தையைப் பற்றி அறிந்து கொண்டார்.

குச்சக முனிவரின் மகன் கவுச்சிகனுக்கு
விருத்தையைத் தர இசைந்தார் உசத்தியர்.

காட்டாற்றில் நீராடினார்கள் பெண்கள்;
காட்டு மதயானை ஒன்று துரத்தலானது! .

புதர்கள் மூடிய கிணற்றில் விழுந்ததால்
பூத உடல் நீத்தாள் மணமகள் விருத்தை.

தோழியைத் தேடித் துவண்டுவிட்ட பிற
தோழிகள் சென்று சேதி சொன்னார்கள்!

மகளைத் தேடிச் சென்ற உசத்தியமுனிவர்
மகளைக் கண்டார் கிணற்றில் பிணமாக!

தேற்ற முடியவில்லை தாய் மங்கலையை.
துயரம் எல்லை மீறியது எல்லோருக்கும்.

மணமகள் பிணமானதை அறிந்த பின்னும்
மணத்தை நிறுத்தவில்லை குச்சக முனிவர் ;

"எண்ணைத் தோணியில் இட்டுவையுங்கள்;
என் தவத்தால் உயிர்ப்பிக்கின்றேன் இவளை!"

பொய்கையில் மூழ்கிக் கடும் தவம் செய்தார்;
பொய்கையின் அருகே வந்தது அதே யானை;

குச்சகரை வாரிப் பிடரிமேல் வைத்துக்கொண்டது
குச்சகரைச் சுமந்தபடி விரைந்து நடக்கலானது.

ஆராயத் தொடங்கினார் அறிவுக் கண்ணால் முனிவர்;
"ஆனை என்னை எங்கே, எதற்குக் கொண்டு செல்கிறது?"

2 (# 5 D ). THE SEARCH FOR A BRIDE.

Kuchchgar searched for a suitable bride everywhere. He questioned the sages and others he met on the road and found out from them that Sage Usaththiyar had a daughter who might fit in the description given by his son.

He visited the father of the girl. Both of them decided to get their children get duly married, at the earliest auspicious day.

Viruththai- the bide to be - went to bathe in a river with her friends. A mad rogue elephant chased them. They ran about and got separated. Viruththai fell into a well covered by thorns and bushes and gave up her life.

The friends were unable to trace her and told her father the events that took place. He went in search of his daughter and found her dead in the well. He broke down and shed bitter tears. His wife Mangalai could not be consoled at all!

Kuchchgar consoled them. He said, " Please preserve the body of your daughter in oil. I will bring her back to life with the power of my penance"

He went to the pond and started his severe penance. The rogue elephant returned to the spot, lifted up the sage Kuchchagr onto its shoulders and started walking very fast.

The sage pondered at the significance of all these happenings using his wisdom.

2 (# 5 e). தருமதத்தன்.

கலிங்க நாட்டின் வணிகன் தேவதத்தன்;
அரிபுரத்தில் வசித்து வந்தான் அவன்.

தருமதத்தன் தேவதத்தனின் மகன்;
தருமம் செய்வதே கருமம் ஆனவன்;

தாய் தந்தையர் இறந்து பட்டனர்!
தனி ஆளாகிவிட்டான் தருமதத்தன்.

இரசவாதி ஒருவன் வந்தான் வீட்டுக்கு;
நீறணிந்து பூணூலும் தரித்திருந்தான்;

கழுத்திலே ஒரு ருத்திராக்ஷக் கொட்டை,
தலயிலே மொட்டை, காதில் குண்டலம்.

போலித் துறவி என்று அறியாமலேயே
போலித் துறவியை நன்கு உபசரித்தான்.

"சிவபெருமான் அருளிய வித்தை உள்ளது!
எவருக்கும் தெரிவிக்கக் கூடாது அதை நான்!

கரிய இரும்பையும் செம்பொன் ஆக்குவேன்;
ரசத்தையும், ஈயத்தையும் நல்ல வெள்ளியாக!

ஒரு பொன் ஆகும் ஒரு கோடிப் பொன்னாக,
ஒரு கோடி பொன் ஒரு பொன் மலையாகும்."

தன் செல்வம் அனைத்தையும் ஈந்தான் வணிகன்.
தன் நினைப்பு பொய்க்குமோ என்று ஐயத்தால்,

"என் வித்தையில் இறைபடக் கூட போதாது!"
என்று சினந்து சொன்னான் அந்த இரசவாதி.

வீடு வாசலை, நில புலன்களைவிற்றான்;
ஆடு மாடுகளை, அணி மணிகளை விற்றான்.

தான் அறியாமலேயே அதுவரை செய்த
தருமத்தையும் விற்று விட்டான் வணிகன்.

2 (# 5 E ). DHARMA DATTAN.

Deva Dattan was a merchant living in Aripuram of Kalinga Desam. His son Dharma Dattan was involved in many charitable deeds. When the merchant and his wife died, Dharma Dattan became all alone in the world.

An alchemist came to his house. He wore the sacred thread and had smeared the holy ash on his forehead, He wore a rudraaksham and kundalams and his head was clean shaven. Dharma Dattan welcomed him warmly.

He told Dharma Dattan, "Siva has taught me a trick by which I can convert iron into Gold and lead and mercury into silver. Your one gold coin can become one crore coins and one crore coins can become a mountain of gold coins."

Dharma Dattan brought forth all his gold but the alchemist lost his temper and said. "This is like the gold strewn on the floor after my alchemy!"

Dharma Dattan sold his land, house, cattle and every earthly possession. Without realising he sold off the sat karmas he had done till then.

2 (# 5 f). மோசமும், மோக்ஷமும்.

தேடிய பொருளைப் பொன்னாக மாற்றித்
தேடி வந்த துறவியிடம் கொண்டு தந்தான்.

இரசத்தைப் பொன்னுடன் கலந்த துறவி
இரசவாத மட்குகையில் அடைத்தான்.

புகை மண்டும் தீயில் வைத்தான் அதை.
புகையில் கண்கள் பற்றி எரியும் போது,

பொன்னை எடுத்து மறைத்துக் கொண்டு
பொன்னுக்கு பதில் இரும்பை வைத்தான்.

"காளி கோவலில் வேள்வி செய்துவிட்டு,
நாள் நான்கானவுடன் நான் திரும்புவேன்!

தனித்திருந்து, உணவு கூட உண்ணாமல்,
நினைத்திரு என்னையே, உரையாடாமல்!"

மூன்று நாட்கள் கடந்து சென்று விட்டன
முனிவன் மீண்டும் அங்கு வரவில்லை.

காளி கோவிலிலும், அந் நகரிலும் தேடிக்
களைத்துப் போனான் தருமதத்தன்.

மட்குகையில் கிடைத்தது கரிய இரும்பு.
மனம் உடைந்தவன் விழுந்து இறந்தான்.

பொருட்களை விற்கும் போது தான் செய்த
தருமத்தையும் விற்றதன் தீப் பயன் இது.

மத யானையாகத் திரிந்து உழல்கின்றவன்
மதி மோசம்போன தருமதத்தனே ஆவான்.

தீவிர தவத்தின் பயனை அளித்து அவன்
தீவினைகளை நீக்கினார் குச்சக முனிவர்.

தன் யானை வடிவம் மறைந்து தேவனாகிப்
பொன் உலகு ஏகினான் பொன் விமானம் ஏறி!

தாமதம் இன்றி குச்சிக முனிவர் தம் தீவிரத்
தவத்தைத் தொடங்கினார் பொய்கையினுள்.

2 (# 5 F). THE DECEPTION AND DIVINITY.

Dharma Dattan bought gold with all the money he got thus. He gave it to the alchemist, who mixed it some chemicals and packed it in a mud pot. The pot was then kept on a fire emitting eyes-burning-fumes.

When Dharma Dattan was thus temporarily blinded, the alchemist hid the gold and replaced it with iron.

He told Dharma dattan,"I have to perform a yaga in the Kali temple for three days. During that time you must go on a fast and keep meditating on me in utter silence. I will come back on the fourth day".

Dharma Dattan did as was told but the alchemist never came back. He went search of the cheat and could not find him anywhere. He came home very tired and defeated. He was shocked beyond words to see iron in the mud pot in the place of gold.

He just dropped dead. It was because unknowingly he had sold away all his punyam. The sage understood that it Dharma Dattan who was born as the angry elephant - suffering and making others suffer too.

He donated the elephant the punya earned by him by his penance done on a day. The elephant gained the form a Deva. He thanked the sage profusely, got in to a vimanam and went to heaven

The rushi went back to his penance and the pond.

2 (# 5 g). விருத்தை மீளுதல்.

தவத்தை மெச்சிக் காட்சி தந்தான்
தவச்சீலர் குச்சகர் முன்பு நமன்!

"விரும்புவதைக் கேளும் முனிவரே!"
திருவாய் மலர்ந்தருளினான் நமன்.

"மகனுக்கு மணம் பேச வந்தேன்;
மணமகள் பிணமாகி விட்டாள்.

முன்போல் அவளைத் தரவேண்டும்
என் மகன் திருமணம் நடப்பதற்கு!"

தூதனிடம் ஆணை இட்டான் நமன்,
"துரிதமாக இவள் உயிரை மீட்டுவா!"

உடலுள் உயிர் புகுந்த அளவில்
உடன் எழுந்து கொண்டாள் விருத்தை.

உறங்கியவள் போல் எழுந்தவளைக்
கிறங்கிய தாய் கட்டி அணைத்தாள்.

ஏங்கிய அன்புத் தோழிகள் வந்து
தூங்கி விழித்தவளை அணைத்து;

குச்சக முனிவரைப் போற்றினர்,
பத்திரமாக அவளை மீட்டதற்கு.

குச்சகர் மகனை அழைத்து வந்தார்;
விருத்தையுடன் நடந்தது திருமணம்.

இனிய இல்லறத்தில் மலர்ந்தான்
இனிய வரவாக ஒரு திருமகன்

மிருகண்டூயரின் மகன் மிருகண்டு!
மிருகண்டுவுக்கு வயது ஆறு ஆனது.

தவம் செய்யத் தந்தை சென்றது போல,
தவம் செய்ய மிருகண்டூயரும் சென்றார்.

2 ( # 5 G). RESURRECTION OF VIRUTHTHAI.

Yamadharman was pleased by the penance of Kuchchagar. He appeared in front of the sage and asked him," What do you wish for, revered sire?"

"I came here to fix the wedding of my son with a girl but now she lies dead. Please return her to me alive so that I can get her married to my son as originally planned!"

Yamadharman ordered his servant to go fetch the life of the girl immediately and return it to her. The girl woke up as if from a deep sleep.The joy of her mother knew no bounds. Her friends were overwhelmed with happiness.

Kuchchgar brought his son, whose wedding with Viruththai was promptly celebrated. They lived a happy life as a result of which they were blessed with a son Mrugandu.

When the son became six years of age, Mrugandooyar left to perform penance - the same way his father had left him earlier.

2 (# 5 h). மிருகண்டூவின் இல்லறம்.

திருமண வயதை அடைந்த மிருகண்டூ
திருமணம் புரிந்தார் மருத்துவதியை.

இல்லறம் நடந்தது ஒரு நல்லறமாக;
இல்லறத்தில் மலரவில்லை ஒரு மகவு.

புனித நகர் காசியினை அடைந்தார்;
புனித கங்கை நதியில் நீராடினார்.

மணிகர்ணிகை திருக்கோவில் சென்று
பணியணி நாதனின் பதம் பணிந்தார்

விழைந்து மக்கட்பேற்றை அருந்தவம்
மழை, காற்று, பனி, வெய்யிலில் செய்ய;

ஓராண்டு காலம் ஓடி மறைய, வந்தார்
மிருகண்டூவின் தவத்தை மெச்சி சிவன்.

"அன்பரே! நீர் விழைவது என்ன?"
"அடியேனுக்கு அருள்க மக்கட்பேறு!"

"அறிவு அற்று, நோயுற்று, என்மேல் அன்பு
அற்று, நூறாண்டுகள் வாழ வேண்டுமா?

அழகுற்று, நோயற்று, என்மேல் அன்புடன்
பதினாறு ஆண்டுகள் வாழ வேண்டுமா?"

"அகவை குறைந்தாலும் சரி, பழுதற்றுச்
சிவனை விரும்புபவனே வேண்டும்!

அத்தகைய மைந்தனை அருளினால்
மெத்தவும் மகிழ்வேன் பெருமானே!"

மருத்துவதி சூலுற்ற போது முனிவர்
மிருகண்டூ மகிழ்ச்சிக் கடலில் மிதந்தார்.

பங்குனித் திங்கள், மிதுன லக்னத்தில்,
ரேவதி நாளில், பிறந்தான் திருமகன்;

பொன்னையும், மணிகள், மலர்களைச்
சந்தனம், கஸ்தூரியுடன் கலந்து தூவ

தேவ துந்துபிகள் முழங்கின விண்ணில்!
தேவர்கள் வந்து வாழ்த்தினர் மகனை!

2 (# 5 H). MRUGANDOO'S LIFE.

When Mrugandu attained marriageable age, he married Maruthuvathi. Their life was happy but for one thing. They were not blessed with a child.

They went to Kasi and took holy bath in Ganges. Mrugandoo worshipped Siva and did severe penance in the heat of the sun, the cold of the winter and rain and snow.

Siva was pleased an appeared before him after one year. Mrugandoo wished for a son.

Siva asked him, "Do you wish to have a son who would live for a hundred years but will lack intelligence, suffer several diseases and will have no bhakti?

Or will you prefer a bright, intelligent son who would live for sixteen years but will have deep love for me?"

Mrugandoo wished for a son who would have love for Siva and who would be bright and intelligent.

When his wife became pregnant, the sage was joyous. On an auspicious day in the month of Panguni a son was born to them.

Gold, gems and flowers were strewn with sandal and kasthoori. Devas played dundubi and blessed the child.

2 (# 5 i ). மார்க்கண்டேயன்.

காசி நகரம் அன்று களிப்பிலாழ்ந்தது;
காசினி முழுவதும் மகிழ்சியடைந்தது.

மறையவர்களுக்கு வழங்கினர் தானம்;
"மார்க்கண்டேயன்!" பிரமன் பெயரிட்டார்.

மாசற்ற திங்கள் போல் மகன் வளருவதை,
பாசமுற்ற பெற்றோர் பார்த்து மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

முப்புரி நூல் அணிந்தான் ஐந்து வயதில்;
மறைகளைக் கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தான் சிறுவன்;

முழு முதற்கடவுள் சிவபெருமானே என்று
முழு மனதோடு நம்பினான் அச்சிறுவன்;

இறைவன், பெற்றோர், குருமார் மீது,
குறையாத அன்பு செலுத்தினான் அவன்;

நாட்கள் உருண்டோடி ஆண்டுகள் ஆயின.
நடப்பது மகனின் பதினாறாவது வயது!

தாயும், தந்தையும் துன்பக் கடலில்
தோய்ந்து கிடப்பதைக் கண்டான் மகன்;

காரணம் கேட்டு மன்றாடியதால் அங்கு
காரணத்தை அவனிடம் கூற நேர்ந்தது !

"வருந்த வேண்டாம் நீங்கள் இருவரும்,
பெருமான் அருளை பெறுவேன் நான்!

கூற்றுவனின் ஆற்றலையும் மாற்றிவிடும்
போற்றும் நம் இறைவனின் இன்னருள்!"

விரைந்து சென்றான் திருக்கோவில்;
திருந்த அமைத்தான் ஒரு சிவலிங்கம்.

பெருந்தவத்தினரும் வியந்து போற்ற
அருந்தவம் அங்கு செய்யலுற்றான்!

செக்கர் வண்ணனாம் சிவபெருமான்
முக்கட்பிரான் வெளிப் போந்தார்!

"யாம் மகிழ்ந்தோம் நீ செய்தவத்தால்!
எம்மிடம் நீ கோருவது யாது மகனே?"

"நமன் கைபடாமல் அருள்வீர் ஐயனே!
நான் வேண்டுவது வேறொன்றுமில்லை!"

"கூற்றுவனுக்கு நீ அஞ்சத் தேவை இல்லை!"
பொற்பதத்தை அவன் தலைமேல் பதித்தார்.

2 (# 5 i) MAARKKANDEYAN.

The city of Kasi celebrated the birth of the child. The whole world seemed to be happier than usual. Gifts were given to the worthy brahmins. Brahma named the child as Maarkkandeyan.

The parents watched their son grow well like a blemish-less full moon. He had upanayanam at the age of five. He mastered the Vedas at a tender age. He firmly believed that Siva was the supreme God. He had great respect for Lord Siva, his parents and his gurus.

Days rolled by and he entered his sixteenth year. The poor parents were torn to pieces internally, thinking of the inevitable fate of their dear son. Maarkkandeyan noticed their constant sorrow and wanted to know the real reason.

His parents had to come out with the truth - since the boy was persistent. He assured them, "Please do not worry. I am sure I will get the blessings of Siva and defeat the purpose of Yama. Siva is more powerful than yama"

He went to the temple. He erected a Sivalingam and started worshipping it with such an intensity that even grown up tapasvis became wonder struck.

Siva was pleased with the boy and appeared before him."What is that you seek my dear son?"

"Sire! I should not be caught by the cruel hands of Yama. I ask for nothing more!"

Siva planted his lotus foot on the boy's head and blessed him."You need not be afraid of Yama!"

2 (# 5j). மர்கண்டேயனும், கிங்கரனும்.

பதினாறு வயது நிரம்பி விட்டது;
பறித்து உயிரை எடுத்துச் செல்ல

அங்கே தோன்றினான் எமதூதன்;
கங்கைபுனை சிவபூஜை கண்டான்!

நெருங்க முடியவில்லை அவனால்!
திரும்பிச் சென்றான் வெகு விரைவாக.

"சிவனிடம் பொருந்திய உள்ளம்;
சிவன் தன் பாதம் பதித்திட்ட சிரம்;

அணுக முடியவில்லை அவனிடம்!
அமர்ந்துள்ளான் சிவவழிபாட்டில்!"

கணக்கனை அழைத்தான் எமதர்மன்;
"கணக்குப் பார்த்துச் சொல்லு வயதை!"

"பதினாறு முடிந்து விட்டது பிரபோ!
அதுவே அவனுக்கு அளித்த ஆயுள்!"

"சிவ வழிபாடு சிறந்த அறம் எனினும்
சிறுவனின் காலம் முடிந்துவிட்டது.

விண்ணுலகம் அடைவதற்கு உரியவனை
மண்ணுலகம் சென்று அழைத்து வா!"

காலனைப் பணித்தான் எமதர்மன்;
காலன் சென்றடைந்தான் காசியை.

அஞ்சினான் சிறுவனை நெருங்கிட;
"கெஞ்சியாகிலும் கூட்டிச் செல்வேன்"

கண்ணுக்குத் தெரியும் வடிவம் எடுத்து
கண்நுதற் பெருமான் அடியானைத் தொழ,

"நீ யார்?" என வினவினான் சிறுவன்.
"நீவீர் தென்புலம் செல்ல வேண்டும்!

எமனின் அமைச்சன் காலன் நானே;
என்னுடன் அழைத்துப் போக வந்தேன்"

"சிவனைத் தொழுபவன் வர மாட்டான்
சிவலோகம் தவிர வேறு ஒரு உலகம்!

உன்னுடன் வர என்னால் இயலாது!
உன் தலைவனிடம் சென்று சொல்!"

2(# 5J). MAARKKANDEYAN AND KINKARAN.

Maarkkandeyan had completed sixteen years of age. A kinkaran came to take away his life. He saw the lad seated in Siva pooja. He could not even go near the lad.
He went back to Yama.

"The boy is immersed in worshipping Siva. Siva has blessed him by placing his foot on the boy's head. I could not bring his life"

Yama called Chitragupthan and verified the age of the boy.

"He is now sixteen years old and that is the lifespan allotted to him sir!"

"Siva puja is a sat karma but since his life span is over he must be brought here at any cost!" He set his minister Kala to do the job.

Kala went to Kasi. He saw the lad immersed in puja and realised that, if at all, the boy would have to come on his own - as no one could touch him. He took a visible form and prostrated to Markandeya.

The buy asked him, "Who are you? What do you want?"

"I am Kala the minister of Yama. Your time on earth is over. You have to come with me now to Yamalokam."

"A devote of Siva will go only Sivalokam and never go to any other lokam. Go and tell your master this"

The boy was very firm and Kala had to retreat in haste.

2 (# 5k). மார்க்கண்டேயனும், யமனும்.

சிறுவனின் மறுமொழி கேட்டுச்
சினம் கொண்டான் யமதர்மன்.

"என்ன துணிச்சல் சிறுவனுக்கு?
என் வாகனத்தைக் கொண்டு வா!"

அமர்ந்துகொண்டான் அதன் மீதேறி;
அவனே சென்றான் அச் சிறுவனிடம்.

பாசம், தண்டம், சூலம் எடுத்தவனைப்
பார்த்தவுடன் தெரிந்துவிட்டது யாரென!

சிவனிடம் தஞ்சம் புகுந்தான் சிறுவன்;
சினத்துடன் பேசலுற்றான் யமதர்மன்.

"யாது சொன்னாய்? யாது செய்தாய்?
யாது எண்ணுகின்றாய் நீ சிறுவனே?

சிவன் வகுத்த வரைமுறைகளை
அவன் அடியார்களே மீறலாகுமா?

சிவ வழிபாடு போக்கும் தீவினைகளை,
சிவ வழிபாடு போக்குமா இக்கயிற்றை?

பிறப்பும், இறப்பும் விடுவதில்லை
திருமால், பிரமன், தேவர்களையும்.

என் கடமையில் தவறேன் நான்!
என்னுடன் நீ வரவேண்டும் உடனே!"

"இல்லை ஒரு முடிவு சிவன் அடியாருக்கு!
இனிதே வாழ்வார் சிவலோகம் சென்று!

சிவனுக்கும் சிவன் அடியாருக்கும் இல்லை
சிந்தித்துப் பார்த்தால் ஒரு வேற்றுமையும்.

எல்லோரையும் போல் நீ எண்ணாதே!
எல்லாம் வல்ல சிவன் அடியார்களை;

எனக்கு நீ இழைக்கும் துன்பங்கள்
உனக்கே திரும்பவும் வரும் காண்!

அறிவற்றவன் போலச் செயல் படாதே!
திரும்பிச் சென்றுவிடு உடனடியாக!"

2 (#5 K). MAARKKANDEYAN AND YAMAN.

Yaman became very angry to learn the words of the lad. He ordered his vaahanam to be brought and went to the boy himself.

The moment the lad saw him, he realised his true identity and moved closer to Sivalingam.

"What did you say? What did you do ? What is in your mind? The rules laid by Siva should not be broken by his own devotees.

Worship of Siva will rid you of your sins but it can never save you from my pasam. Even Vishnu, Brahma and Devas have birth and death.

How can you defy death? I will never fail in my duty. You must go with me!" Yama spoke in great anger.

"There is no death for the devotees of Siva. They live for ever in his Sivalokam.

Do not equate the devotees of Siva to the ordinary mortals. The troubles you are going to cause me with backfire on you many fold. Go back to your world and act sensibly". The lad spoke unruffled.

2 (# 5 l ). யமன் இறத்தல்.

சிறு பயலின் சொற்களைக் கேட்டு
சீற்றம் தலைக்கேறியது யமனுக்கு.

இடி போல ஆரவாரம்செய்தான்;
இடியின் மின்னலாகக் கண்களில் தீ!

பாசக் கயிற்றை வீசி இழுத்தான்
பாசத்துடன் சிவனை அணைத்தவனை!

கயிற்றினால் ஒரு துன்பமும் நேரவில்லை;
மயிர்க் கூச்செறிய வெளி வந்தான் சிவன்!

"மதம் தலைக்கேறியது எமனுக்கு!"- ஒரு
பதம் தூக்கி உதைத்தருளினான் யமனை .

வீழ்ந்து இறந்தான் யமன் அங்கேயே!
அழிந்தன அவன் படையும், ஊர்தியும்.

"முடிவில்லாத ஆயுளைத் தந்தோம்!" என
அடியவனை வாழ்த்தி மறைந்தார் சிவன்.

சிரஞ்சீவி ஆகிவிட்ட மார்க்கண்டேயன்
விரைந்து சென்றான் தன் பெற்றோரிடம்.

சிவப்பதிகள் சென்று சிவனைப் பாடி
சிரஞ்சீவியாக வாழ்ந்து வருகின்றான்.

யமன் இறந்ததால் இல்லை இறப்பு!
உயிர்கள் தோன்றிப் பெருகலாயின!

வருந்திய நிலமகள் மாலிடம் கூற,
திருமாலும், பிரமனும் சிவனிடம் கூற,

உயிர்ப் பிச்சை தந்தார் யமனுக்கு
துயர் தீர்த்தார் நிலமகள் சுமையின்.

"என் அடியவர்களை நெருங்காதே!
என் அடியவர்கள் எனக்கே சமம்.

என்றும் நீ இதை மறந்து விடாதே!"
எமன் திரும்பினான் தன் தென்புலம்.

"தவத்தின் பெருமையை உணர்வீர்!
தவம் பிழைப்பித்தது மணமகளை!

தவம் உய்வித்தது மதயானையை.
தவம் உயர்வித்தது மிருகண்டூயரை.

தவம் தந்தது ஓர் ஒப்பற்ற மகனை.
தவம் வென்றது ஊழ்வினைகளை.

தவத்தின் பெருமையை உணர்வீர்!
தவம் செய்து மேன்மைகள் பெறுவீர்!"

2 (# 5L). THE DEATH OF YAMA.

Yama became terribly angry by the lad's reply. He roared like the thunder clouds and his eyes shone like the lightning in the cloud.

He threw his paasam around the lad-who was hugging the Sivalingam and pulled him with all his might.

The lad did not suffer any pain but Siva emerged from the lingam. He licked Yama with one leg. Yama dropped down quite dead. His army and vaahanam also got killed.

Siva blessed the boy, 'You will be chiranjeevi!" and disappeared. The lad ran back home to tell the good news to his worried parents. He visits Siva temples and sings the glory of Siva to this day.

With the death of Yama there was no more death of any form of life. The population grew so much that the Goddess of earth could not bear the weight . She told her sufferings to Vishnu. He told it to Siva.

Siva resurrected Yama and told him, "Never approach any of my devotees. Remember they are equal to me!" Yama returned to his kingdom.

The sage Kasyapa concluded his long speech to his children thus:

"Realise the greatness of penance. It brought back to life the bride-to-be.

It gave moksham to a troubled elephant.

It placed Mrugandooyar among the Devas.

It gave mrugandoo a great son.

It nullified the evil effects of fate.

So my dear children do penance and become great people on earth!"

2 (#6). மாயையின் அறிவுரை.

காச்யப முனிவரின் அறிவுரைகளை
கவனமாகக் கேட்டாள் அந்த மாயை;

"வீடு பேறு விரும்பும் வயோதிகருக்கும்,
காடு சென்று கடும் தவம் புரிவோருக்கும்,

முனிவரே! உம் சொற்கள் பொருந்தும்!
இனிய வாழ்வை நாடுபவருக்கு அல்ல!

இன்பத்தை, நீண்ட ஆயுளை, நல்ல புகழை,
மேன்மையை, செல்வதைப் பெற அல்ல!

கூறுங்கள் அவற்றை அடையக் கூடிய
குறுக்கு வழி என்று ஒன்று இருந்தால்!"

அதிர்ந்து போனார் முனிவர், அதன் பின்
முதிர்ந்த அறிவுரைகளைக் கூறவில்லை.

"இந்த உலகில் மாந்தர் விழைவது இந்த
இரண்டு வகைச் செல்வங்களே அறிவீர்!

கல்விச் செல்வமும், பொருட்செல்வமும்
இல்லாத ஒரு வாழ்வு வெறும் பாழே!

கல்வியிலும் சிறந்தது பொருட் செல்வம்.
கல்லாத செல்வர்க்கும் உண்டு செல்வாக்கு.

செல்வத்தை அடையத் தேவை ஊக்கம்;
செல்லாமல் நிற்க வேண்டும் ஊக்கத்தில்.

எனக்குப் பிறந்து விட்டதால் நீங்களும்
அனைத்து தேவர்களுக்கும் பகைவர்கள்.

தேவர்களிலும் சிறந்த வாழ்வு நீர் பெற
ஆவது அனைத்தும் உரைப்பேன் நான்.

வடதிசை நோக்கிச் செல்லுங்கள் நீங்கள்!
திடமாகத் தவம் செய்ய நல்லஇடம் அது;

நச்சு சமித்துக்களால் வளர்த்துங்கள் தீயை!
பச்சை ஊனையும், குருதியும் சொரியுங்கள்!

சிவபெருமான் மகிழ்ந்து வெளிப்படுவான்;
அவனருளால் பல மேன்மைகள் பெறுவீர்!"

சூர பத்மன் புறப்பட்டான் வடதிசைக்கு
தாரகன், சிங்கமுகன், அஜமுகியருடன்.

2 (#6). MAYAI'S ADVICE.

Maayai listened to the sage's long advice with rapt attention and then she spoke thus; "Your words are applicable to the old people who want to get liberated and to the tapasvis living in the jungle.

They are not useful to the people who desire a long life of pleasure and happiness. Not to those who seek wealth, fame and greatness. If there is a short cut method to achieve these things, teach that to our children"

The sage was shocked to learn the true motives of Maayai. He spoke no more.

Maayai continued:

"The people of the world desire two things - Knowledge and Wealth. Of these wealth is preferred to knowledge. Even if a wealthy person does not have knowledge, he will still be respected, But not the other way!

You are my children. So all the Devas are now your enemies. I will tell you how to become superior even to the Devas and live a life better than theirs.

Go to the north. That place is ideal for doing penance. Do yagna with the poisonous samiththu and pour blood and meat in it. Siva will be pleased and emerge. You can get all the boons from him and become powerful"

Soorapadman left with Tarakan and Ajamukhi and went northwards.

2 (# 7). மாயை நீங்குதல்.

மக்களோடு புறப்பட்டு விட்டாள் மாயை;
விக்கித்துப் போனார் காசியப முனிவர்;

தையல் மீது கொண்ட மையல் - உச்சி
வெய்யில் போல எரித்தது அவரை.

"அன்பன் என்னை நீங்குதல் முறையோ?"
பின் தொடர்ந்து அரற்றினார் முனிவர்!

"மன்னியுங்கள் முனிவரே என்னை நீங்கள்;
மக்கட்பேறை விழைந்து வந்தேன் உம்மிடம்;

சொந்தம் கொண்டாடி வாழ்வதற்கல்ல!
வந்த நோக்கம் நன்கு நிறைவேறியது.

என் பெயர் மாயை. நானும் ஒரு மாயை!"
கண் முன்னேயே மறைந்தன அனைத்தும்.

மகனின் மனக் கலக்கத்தை அறிந்த - நான்
முகன் வந்தான் அவனைத் தேற்றுவதற்கு.

"அருந்தவம் புரிவதை விட்டு விட்டு நீ
வருந்தி நிற்பது ஏன் கூறு என்னிடம்!"

மாயையின் திடீர் வருகை, நோக்கம்;
தேவை முடிந்தபின் உதறிச் சென்றது;

மறைக்காமல் கூறினான் மறைமுனிவன்
மறைகள் ஓதும் தந்தை நான்முகனிடம்.

"மறைகள் கற்ற முனிவன் நீயும்,
அறிவற்றவன் போலப் புலம்பலமா?

கள், காமம் என உண்டு இரண்டு எதிரிகள்.
கள்ளினும் கொடியது ஐயமின்றுக் காமமே!

உண்டவர் மனத்தைத்தான் மயக்கும் கள்.
கண்டவர் மனத்தையே மயக்கும் காமம்.

ஆழ்த்தும் இம்மையில் துன்பக் கடலில்!
வீழ்த்தும் மறுமையில் பிறவிக் கடலில்!

இழிவு பட்டாய் வஞ்சகியோடு இணைந்து
இழிவு தீரக் கடும் தவம் புரிவாய் மகனே!"

மனம் தெளிந்த முனிவன் முன்போல்
கனத்த தவத்தைச் செய்யலுற்றான்.

வேண்டியதைத் தரும் தவத்தை மாயை
ஆண்டவனை நோக்கிச் செய்யலுற்றாள்.

2 (#7). MAAYAI DESERTS THE SAGE.

Maayai got ready to go off with her children. The sage was shocked by this . His lust for Maayai scorched him like the midday Sun. "You can't desert me like this!" He lamented following her closely.

"I came to get offspring from you and not to live with you. Please pardon me! I must go with my children. My name is Maayai. I am also a maayai."

Along with her all her creations, the mandapams, ponds and gardens disappeared.The sage was steeped in sorrow.

Brahma, the father of the sage, saw his son wallowing in self pity and sorrow. He consoled him and demanded to know what had upset him thus?

The sage told everything, Maayai's arrival, the night he had spent with her and the way she had deserted him the very next morning"

Brahma told him, "You are a learned sage but You have behaved like a fool. You have degraded yourself by spending the night with her producing offspring. It is time to go back to your penance for the shameful act you have just performed.

There are two things which ruin a man - the wine and the woman. The wine disturbs the mind of one who drinks it. The women disturbs the minds of even the onlookers. The women make you miserable and bind you in samsaaram."

The sage got consoled and returned to do penance. At the same time Maayai was also doing the yagna which would give her whatever she sought.
