VENKATESA PURAANAM

31a. ஆனந்தம் ஆனந்தம்!

ஆனந்த மயமாக மாறிவிட்டது அங்கே
ஆனந்த நிலயத்தில் மூவரின் வாழ்க்கை.

சக்களத்திகள் போல இருக்கவில்லை – இரு
சஹோதரிகள் போல அன்பு செலுத்தினர்.

பரம சந்தோஷம் பக்த கோடிகளுக்கு;
வரம் அளிக்க இருந்தனர் மூவர் என்று!

தனிமையில் கூறினான் லக்ஷ்மியிடம்,
ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் குபேரனின் கடனைப் பற்றி.

“வட்டி கட்ட ஒப்புக் கொண்டேன் நான்
வட்டி கட்ட வில்லை ஒரு முறை கூட.

பழிக்கு ஆளாகி விடுவேனே – நான்
இழிச் சொற்களைக் கேட்க நேருமோ?

உதவ முடியும் உன்னால் எனக்கு!
அதுவும் மிக எளிதான் முறையில்!

உன்னைத் தேடி வரும் பக்தருக்கு வழங்கு
பொன்னையும், பொருளையும் வாரி வாரி.

என்னைத் தேடி வருபவர்கள் அளிப்பர் – அந்தப்
பொன்னையும், பொருளையும் காணிக்கையாக!”

புறப்பட்டாள் லக்ஷ்மி தேவி கேட்ட உடனே,
“நிறைவேற வேண்டும் நம் நோக்கம் சுவாமி!

தனியே இருக்க வேண்டும் நான் – நம்முடைய
பணிகள் சரிவர நடை பெறுவதற்கு!” என்றாள்.

பாதாள லோகம் சென்றாள் லக்ஷ்மி
பகவானுக்கு உதவத் தயார் ஆனாள்.

“நினைத்த காரியம் இனிதாக நடைபெறப்
புனிதப் படுத்திக் கொள்ள வேண்டும் நான்.”

பகவன் பாடு மீண்டும் திண்டாட்டம்!
பாதாள லோகத்தில் லக்ஷ்மி தவத்தில்!

பூலோகத்தில் வந்து நிலை பெற்றால் தான்
ஆலோசிக்க முடியும் குபேரன் வட்டியை!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#31b. Days filled with joy!

Aanandha Nilayam was filled with aanandham now. The lives of the three gods were filled with joy and nothing but joy. Srinivaasan’s two consorts were more like two sisters than two wives competing for the love of their husband!

The devotees were happy since now there were three gods to bless them with whatever they wanted. One day when they were all by themselves, Srinivaasan spoke to Lakshmi Devi about the money borrowed from Kuberan.

He said, “I can return the money borrowed at the end of Kali yuga. But I had agreed to pay the annual interest and I could not pay that even once. I am afraid I will be ridiculed for going back on my promise.

I may have to hear unkind comments. You can help me easily. Bless your devotees who throng to visit your temple with immense wealth. They will be only too happy to part with a portion of it and offer it to me.”

Lakshmi Devi understood his requirement and his wish. She got ready to go away immediately. She told him, “If your plan should work out with success, we have to live separately in the future also.”

She went to Paataala lokam and wanted to purify herself for the task ahead of her. Srinivaasan never expected this to happen. Lakshmi had gone away to Paataalaa one more time.

She had started her penance once again. But she had to be on the earth and in her temple – if his plans were to succeed!

6#25a. வியாசரின் விசனம் (3)

சாபம் தந்துவிட்டேன் கோபம் எல்லை மீறியதால்!
“பாவம் குருட்டுப் பிள்ளை அரசனாகும் தகுதியற்றவன்

உற்பத்தி செய்வாய் நீ அம்பாலிகையோடு கூடி
நற்குணங்களும், லக்ஷணமும் கொண்ட மகனை!”

காத்திருந்தேன் அம்பாலிகையின் வரவை எதிர்நோக்கி;
பார்த்தவுடன் அவள் வியர்த்து வெளுத்தாள் பயத்தால்.

கோபம் வந்தது மீண்டும்; சாபம் தந்தேன் மீண்டும்;
பாவம் பிள்ளை பிறந்தான் வெண்குஷ்டத்தோடு!

திரும்பிச் சென்றுவிட்டேன் என் ஆசிரமத்துக்கு;
திரும்பவும் அழைத்தாள் என் தாய் வருட முடிவில்.

“இருவரும் அரசாளும் தகுதியற்றவர்கள் – எனவே
பெறுவாய் இம்முறை நல்ல மகனை என்று

அம்பிகையை அனுப்பினாள் என் தாய் என்னிடம்;
அம்பிகை அனுப்பினாள் ஒரு தாதியை அலங்கரித்து.

ரதி போன்று அழகியவள் அந்தத் தாதி – அவள் தன்
மதி முகத்தில் புன்சிரிப்புடன் என்னிடம் வந்தாள்

இன்பக் கடலில் வீழ்த்தினாள் என்னை வசீகரித்து!
தன்மயமாகி அளித்தேன் நல்ல வரம் அவளுக்கு.

“சர்வ லக்ஷணங்களும் பொருந்தியவனும் – உலகின்
சகல சாஸ்திர நிபுணனும் ஆன மகன் பிறப்பான்!”

பிறந்தான் அவளுக்கு நீதிமான் விதுரன் மகனாக,
பிறந்தது எனக்கு மூன்று பிள்ளைகள் மேலும் பாசம்.

குறைந்தது சுகன் தந்து சென்ற புத்திர சோகம்;
மறையவில்லை ஆயினும் மாயையின் மயக்கம்;

மறை முனிவரையும் மயக்கிவிடும் மாயை அறிவோம்!
மறைய வேண்டும் மயக்கமும், துக்கமும் முழுவதும்!”

6#25a. Vyaasaa’s sorrow (3)

Vyaasaa continued to tell Naarada,” I cursed Ambikai due to my surging anger. My mother said, “The blind boy is unfit to rule a kingdom. I want you to produce a healthy and good looking son with the help of Ambaalika.”

I was waiting for the arrival Ambaalika. She turned as pale as a white sheet when she saw me. I became angry one more time and cursed her, “May you bear a son afflicted with Leucism.”

A son was born to her as white as a sheet. I went back to my ashram. But my mother Satyavati sent for me again at the end of the year.

She told me,”Both these children are unfit to become future kings. I want you to produce a good looking healthy son with the help of Ambikai. She sent Ambikai to me.

But Ambikai decorated a maid and sent her to me in her place. The maid was very beautiful and happy to see me. She made me feel very happy and wanted. I was in the seventh heaven with bliss.

I blessed her, “May you bear a good looking son, who is very intelligent and well versed in all the saastraas of the world!”

She got Vidura as her son. I developed attachment on all my three sons. The sorrow inflicted by the separation of Sukan was reduced to some extent. But I am still dazed by the effects of Maayaa. Even the wise sages are deluded by the power of Maayaa.”

13h. முயலகனும், தீயும்

முனிவர்கள் பின்னரும் உணரவில்லை
குனித்த புருவக் கொவ்வைச் செவ்வாயனை.

மீண்டும் செய்தனர் இழிந்ததொரு வேள்வி.
மண்டும் தீயுடன் எழுந்தான் முயலகன்.

“ஆற்றல் கெடுத்து அழியுங்கள் சிவனை!”
சீற்றத்துடன் நெருங்கினர் சிவபெருமானை.

தீயை ஒரு கரத்தில் ஏந்தினார் சிவபிரான்;
திருவடியை ஊன்றினார் முலயகன் மேல்.

அழிக்கவே முடியாத சிவன் மீது முனிவர்
“அழிக!” எனச் சாபங்கள் பல இட்டனர்.

ஆபத் பாந்தவனை அனாத ரக்ஷகனை
சாபங்களால் என்ன செய்ய முடியும்?

திருவடியின் கீழே கிடந்த முயலகன்
திரும்பவும் தலை எடுத்து அசைக்க,

பெருமான் அவன் உடல் மீது நடிக்க;
பேருலகங்கள் அனைத்தும் நடுங்க;

தாருகாவன முனிவர்கள் கலங்க;
பேருவகை கொண்டானர் தேவர்கள்.

திருக்கூத்தை ஒழித்தார் சிவபெருமான்.
தாருகாவன முனிவர்களுக்குப் பிரான்

பேரருளுடன் தந்தார் நல்லறிவினை.
பொறுத்தருள வேண்டினர் முனிவர்கள்

“முறைப்படி ஒழுகுவீர்!” என உரைத்துத்
திருக்கயிலை திரும்பினார் சிவபிரான்.

6#13h. Muyalagan and the Fire.

The rushis did not understand the greatness of Siva even then. They did one more mean yagna. Muyalagan emerged along with the burning fire. They were ordered to destroy Siva and went near him.

Siva caught hold of the fire in one hand and planted one foot on Muyalagan.

The rushis cast many curses on Siva that he should be destroyed. The curses had no effect on the merciful god. Muyalagan tried to move under Siva’s feet.

Siva started dancing on him. The worlds trembled. The rushis were helpless now. The devas became very happy.

Siva stopped dancing and blessed the rushis with true knowledge. The rushis fell at Siva’s feet and begged for pardon. Siva blessed them and said, “Follow the Vedas!” He then returned to Mount Kailash.

31b. மீண்டும் தவம்

சென்றான் ஸ்ரீனிவாசன் பாதாள லோகம்;
நின்றான் தியானம் செய்த லக்ஷ்மி முன்பு.

கண்டாள் லக்ஷ்மி அகக்கண்களில் அவனை
காணவில்லை அவள் புறக்கண்கள் அவனை.

“தரிசனம் தந்தீர்கள் எனக்கு – ஆனால்
அரிதாகி மீண்டும் மறைந்து விட்டீர்கள்!”

'கலைந்து விட்டது உன் தவம் லக்ஷ்மி!
வேலைகள் அநேகம் காத்திருக்கின்றன.

தடைபட்டுள்ளன அவை உன் தவத்தால்;
உடைபடும் தடை நீ பூலோகம் சென்றால்!

சுகரின் ஆசிரமத்தில் காத்திருக்கின்றது,
சுகமான ராஜ போகம் உனக்கு!” என்றான்.

அதிசேஷனை தியானித்தாள் லக்ஷ்மி;
ஆதிசேஷன் வந்து வணங்கி நின்றான்.

“சேர வேண்டும் சுகரின் ஆசிரமத்தை!”
தேர் நின்றது வெள்ளைப் பரிகள் பூட்டி!

ஏறி அமர்ந்தாள் அழகிய ரதத்தினில்,
அரிய ஆபரணங்கள் அணிந்த லக்ஷ்மி.

ரதத்துடன் தேவியைத் தலையில் தாங்கி,
வேகத்துடன் வெளிப்பட்டான் பூவுலகில்.

சாயாசுகர் கண்டார் மஹாலக்ஷ்மியை,
“சரணம் சரணம் லோக மாதா!” என்றார்.

31b. Back to Penance

Srinivaasan went to paatala lokam. He stood in front of Lakshmi Devi who was in deep meditation. She saw him with her inner eyes but when she opened her eyes but she did not find him there!

“Lord! You appeared to my inner eyes but I am unable to see you now.” Srinivaasan told her, “Now that your meditation is disturbed, listen to me carefully.

You have many tasks ahead of you. Your presence is needed on the earth and not in the pataala lokam. A very fruitful and joyous life awaits you in the ashram of Sage Chaayaa Sukar.”

She had to reach the surface of the earth now and very fast! Lakshmi Devi thought of Aadhiseshan and he appeared immediately. She told him, “I have to reach the ashram of Sage Chaaya Sukar now. Please arrange for that.”

A chariot with white horses stood ready for her. Lakshmi Devi got into it decorated with her exquisite jewels. Aadhiseshan lifted the chariot on his head and they were on the surface of the earth near the ashram of the Sage Chaayaa Sukar.

The Sage became happy to see Devi and welcomed her saying “SaraNam, SaraNam Loka Maataa!”

நிலையறற்து பந்த பாசம் என அறிந்து கொண்டேன்
நிலை கொள்ளாது அலைந்தேன் அங்கும் இங்கும்.

துறவு மனப்பான்மை என்னை ஆசிரமத்துக்கு இழுக்க
உறவு முறைகள் இழுத்தன என்னை அரண்மனைக்கு.

பட்டாபிஷேகம் செய்து கொண்டான் பாண்டு;
மட்டற்ற மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்தேன் அந்நன்னாளில்;

மணந்து கொண்டான் இரண்டு குணவதிகளை;
இணையற்ற மகிழ்ச்சி கொண்டேன் அது கேட்டு.

முனிவர் சாபத்தால் தனித்தனியே வாழ்ந்தார்கள்;
கனிந்து உருகியது என் தந்தை நெஞ்சம் கேட்டு.

புத்திரப் பேறு விழைந்தனர் பாண்டுவும், மனைவியரும்;
புத்திரப் பேறு பெற்றனர் தேவதைகளின் அருளால்.

செய்தான் பாண்டு மனைவியுடன் சம்போகம் ஒருநாள்;
சென்றன் உலகை விடுத்து முனிவர் சாபம் பலித்ததால்.

உடன் கட்டை ஏற முயன்றார்கள் இரு மனைவியர்;
தடை செய்து விட்டனர் குந்தியை அங்கிருந்தோர்;

மாறினாள் மாத்ரி பாண்டுவின் வீர பத்தினியாக;
மாறினர் காட்டிலிருந்து நாட்டுக்குப் பாண்டவர்.

அனுபவித்தனர் பல கொடுமைகளைப் பாண்டவர்கள்;
அனுப்பினான் பீஷ்மன் போற்பயிற்சிக்கு பாண்டவரை.

சேர்ந்து வாழமுடியாத சகோதரர்களைப் பிரித்து
வேறுவேறாக வாழச் செய்தான் திருதராஷ்ட்டிரன்.

அரக்கு மாளிகையில் வசித்து வந்த பாண்டவர்களை
இரக்கம் இன்றிக் கொல்ல முயன்றான் துரியோதனன்.

ராஜசூய யாகம் செய்த போது நான் மகிழ்ந்தேன்;
ராஜ்யத்தை இழந்த போது நான் வருந்தினேன்.

வனவாசம் சென்றபோது மனம் வருந்தினேன்
மனம் அலை பாய்ந்தது அமைதியேயின்றி.

சம்சாரம் வெறும் மாயை என்று அறிவேன்;
சம்சார சாகரத்தில் துரும்பாகத் தவிக்கின்றேன்.

ஊசலாடுகிறது என் மனம் சஞ்சலத்தினால்;
ஊன்ற வேண்டும் மனதில் அமைதியை நீர்.”

6#25b. Vyaasaa’s sorrow (4)

Vyaasaa continued to Naarada,” I understood that family ties were transitory and temporary. I became restless and roamed about aimlessly. I turned towards my ashram drawn by the virakti or disinterest in samsaaram. At the same time my relatives pulled me towards the palace against my will.

Paandu was crowned the new king. I was very happy on that day. He married two virtuous women. I was happy to hear about it. Later Paandu was cursed by a sage that he would die if he enjoyed marital pleasures with his wives.

He and his wives were forced to live like sanyaasins. My heart melted to hear about this. Paanduand his two wives wished to have sons. With Paandu’s permission the two wives got five sons – through the help of five Devataas.

Paandu indulged in pleasure with his younger wife Maadri one day. True to the rushi’s curse, he died while he was still in ecstasy. Kunti and Maadri wished to perform sati along with Paandu. Kunti was stopped from becoming a sati and was entrusted to bridging up the five Pandavaas. Maadri became a veerapatni and performed sati.

Kunti and Paandavas shifted from the forest to the city now. They were subjected to various troubles and humiliations. Beeshma sent the Paandavaas for training in warfare and wielding the various weapons.

The cousins could not get along well. So Drutharaashtran separated the Paandavas from Kouravas. When the Paandavaas lived in the palace made of inflammable materials, Duryodhan tried to burn them alive.

I was happy when Paandavaas performed Raaja sooya yagna and sad when they were forced to go to vana vaasam and agnaatha vaasam.

My mind is in utter confusion. I know that samsara is kalpitham and imaginary. Still I feel like a straw in a flooded river. My mind was always agitated. Kindly give me some peace of mind O Deva ruhi!”

Sage Vyaasaa begged Deva rushi Naarada thus.

13i. யானை உரி அணிதல்.

யானை வடிவ அசுரன் கொடிய கயாசுரன்;
மோனத் தவம் செய்தான் மேருவின் மீது.

தன் மனம் அவன் தவத்தால் கனிந்ததும்
நான்முகன் வினவினான்,”என்ன தேவை?”

“அழியாத ஆற்றலை விழைகின்றேன்!
கழியாத வாழ்நாளை விழைகின்றேன்!”

நகைத்த நான்முகன் இதைச் சொன்னான்,
“நான் தந்தேன்! சிவன் முன்பு செல்லாதே!”

வரங்கள் கிடைத்ததும் மனம் மாறிவிடும்;
வரம்பு மீறுவதும், வாட்டி வதைப்பதும் என.

விண்ணுலகில் இந்திரனை வென்றான்;
விண்ணுலகை அடித்து நொறுக்கினான்.

எடுத்தான் ஐராவதத்தின் வாலைப் பற்றி;
அடித்தான் சுழற்றித் துன்பம் தரும்படி.

அஷ்ட திக்கு பாலகர்களைத் துரத்தினான்;
அசுர, மனித குலத்தை வாட்டி வதைத்தான்;

நஞ்சுக் காற்றுப் போல் எங்கும் பரவினான்;
அஞ்சிய முனிவர் அடைந்தனர் காசியை!

கெஞ்சினர் ஈசனிடம் காத்தருள வேண்டி!
கொஞ்சமும் அஞ்சாது வந்தான் காசிக்கு

மறந்தானோ நான்முகன் ஆணையை?
துறந்தானோ? அறிகிலோம்! உரப்பினான்.

6#13i. The elephant hide.

Gajamukaasuran was elephant faced. He did severe penance on Mount Meru. When Brahma was pleased with the penance he appeared and blessed the asuran.

“What is that you wish for?” asked Brahma. “I seek unlimited powers and unending life span!” Gajamukha asuran replied.


Brahma laughed and replied, “You shall have them but do not go in front of Siva!”

Boons boost the evil nature in people’s minds. Gajamuka asuran got intoxicated bu these rare boons. He defeated Indra and destroyed his city

He tortured both the asuras and men. He lifted Airawat by its tail, swirled it and hit it on the ground! He chased the eight dig palakaas. He spread everywhere like the poisonous fumes.

The frightened rushis ran to Kasi and sought he protection of Lord Siva. The asuran forgot Brahma’s advice and followed the ruhis to Kasi. He stood there and made a very loud noise.

31c. சாயா சுகர்

சுகர் விரும்பினார் சாயுஜ்ய முக்தியை
சுகர் எழும்பினார் தம் யோகசக்தியால்.

தடுத்தான் சூரியன் சுகரின் பிரயாணத்தை;
விடுத்தான் சுகரிடம் கேள்விக் கணைகளை.

“முன்னோர்கள் பூவுலகில் வாழ்ந்திருக்க,
முன்பாக சாயுஜ்யம் அடைய முடியுமா?

அருகதை இல்லை உமக்கு சாஸ்திரப்படி,
அறிந்திருப்பீர் இதனை நீரும் முன்பாகவே!

கிருஹஸ்தாஸ்ரமத்தை ஏற்க வேண்டும்;
பிறக்க வேண்டும் புத்திரர்கள், சந்ததியினர்;

பிரம்மஞானி ஆவது அதற்கும் பின்பு;
அரிய சாயுஜ்யம் அதற்கும் பின்பு என்று.”

“மனிதனுக்குத் தேவை நான்கு ஆசிரமங்கள்;
முனிவனுக்குத் தேவை இல்லை ஆசிரமங்கள்;

நீர்க்குமிழி போன்றது வாழ்க்கை என்று
நீத்து விடுகிறோம் அதை முற்றிலுமாக.

அடைய முடியுமா ஞான மார்க்கத்தை என
விடை அறிய விரும்பினேன் தந்தையிடம்.

அனுப்பினார் என்னை ஜனக ராஜனிடம்,
வனப்புடன் விளக்கினார் ஜனகர் எனக்கு.

பக்குவம் அடையாதவனுக்குத் தேவை இவை;
பக்குவம் அடைந்தவனுக்கு அல்ல என்பதை.”

“விதிகளைக் கூறுபவர்களே தாம் கூறிய
விதிகளை உடைக்கவில்லை முனிவரே!

விஷ்ணு, பிரமதேவன், வசிஷ்டர், சக்தி,
பராசரர், வியாசர், நீர் ஒரு வம்சத்தினர்.

தேவை ஒரு சந்ததி சேவை செய்திட;
தோற்றுவித்தால் உமக்கு சாயுஜ்யம்!”

31c. Sage Chaayaa Sukar

Sage Sukar wished to obtain Saayujya Mukti. He could travel in air by his yoga shakti. He went up higher and higher in the sky, until he was stopped by the Sun god.

The sage was fired with several questions by the Sun God. “Your ancestors are still living on the face of the earth. It is your duty to serve them. Why do you wish for Saayujya Mukti before they have obtained liberation? You are not qualified for it as yet. I am sure you are aware of it yourself.

You must take up Gruhastha asramam. You must beget good children. You can become a Brahma gnaani only after the completion of the Gruhastha asramam and Vaanaprastham. Saayujya Mukti comes at the every end of all the four ashramams taken up in the correct sequence.”

The Sage Sukar replied, “Taking up the four aashramams in the correct order is only for ordinary human beings and not for those who are born as Brahma gnaanis. We know that the life of a human is just like bubble seen on the surface of water.

We do not wish to entertain that or enter into samsaara. I asked my learned father Sage Vyaasaa whether it was possible to take up the gnana maarggam directly. He sent me to the king Janaka .

King Janaka explained that point very well to me! He said the four aashrams in the correct order is only for ordinary human beings and not for those who are already set on the gnaana maarggam.”

“But O sage! Did you notice that those who preach these rules also follow them. They do not bend or break the rules to suit their convenience. Vishnu, Brahma, Vasishtar, Shakti, Paraasarar, Vyaasar and you are from one lineage. You must beget a son to serve your elders. Saayujya Mukti is possible only after that.”

The Sun God stuck to his line of argument.

6#26a. தமயந்தியின் காதல் (1)

நாரதர் சிரித்தார் வியாசரின் மொழியைக் கேட்டு;
“நீரா கேட்கின்றீர் என்னிடம் இதற்கான காரணம்?

மாயைக்கு மயங்காதவன் ஒருவன் உள்ளானா?
மாயை ஆட்டுவிக்கும் தேவர், தெய்வங்களையும்.

திரிலோக சஞ்சாரி என்று புகழ்கின்றனர் என்னை.
திரிகால ஞானி என்றும் புகழ்கின்றனர் என்னை.

பெண்ணின் உடலைப் பெற்றேன் ஒருமுறை.
பெண்ணாக வாழ்ந்து பிள்ளைகளை ஈன்றேன்.

பர்வத முனிவருடன் வந்தேன் பாரத கண்டம்;
பார்த்தோம் புனிதத் தலங்களைப் புனித நீராடி.

பிரதிக்ஞை செய்து கொண்டோம் நாங்கள்;
பிறழாமல் கூறவேண்டும் மனோ விகாரங்களை;

புகல வேண்டும் ஒளிவு மறைவு எதுவுமின்றி
புதிதாகத் தோன்றும் எண்ண ஓட்டங்களை என.

வந்து சேர்ந்தோம் இருவரும் ஒரு நகருக்கு:
வரவேற்றான் அந் நகர மன்னன் எங்களை.

மழைக் காலம் தொடங்கிவிட்டது அப்போது;
மழைக் காலத்தில் தங்கி விடுவோம் ஓரிடத்தில்

தங்கி விட்டோம் அரசன் அரண்மனையிலேயே;
தமயந்தி என்னும் இளவரசி நன்கு உபசரித்தாள்.

குறிப்பறிந்து செய்தாள் பணிவிடைகள் எமக்கு.
துருதுறு வென்ற அழகிய இளம் அறிவாளி அவள்.

மஹதி வீணையை மீட்டிப் பாடுவேன் நான்;
மனோ ரம்மியமான சாம கானம் இசைப்பேன்.

கவர்ந்தது சங்கீதம் காந்தம் போல தமயந்தியை
கவனித்தாள் என்னை மேலும் விசே ஷமாக.

பாரபக்ஷம் தென்பட்டது அவள் உபசரிப்பிலே.
பர்வத முனிவருக்குச் சுமாரான உபசரிப்பு.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

6#26a. Damayanti’s love

Naarada laughed on hearing Vyaasa’s words. “It is funny that you should ask me this! Tell me one person who is not deluded by Maayaa. Even Devaas and Gods are controlled by Maayaa.

People praise me as triloka sanchaari and trikaala gnaani. Yet I was also deluded by Maayaa once. I got a woman’s body and gave birth to many children.

I came to Bhaarata khandam along with Parvata rushi. We visited several holy places and bathed in the holy teerthams. We took an oath that we should share our thoughts truthfully – however weird they may seemed to be.

We reached a city. The king welcomed us heartily. The rainy season started then. No one travels during the rainy season but stay put where they are till the rains clear off.

So I and Parvata rushi stayed in the king’s palace. Princess Damayanti was attending to our needs and taking care of us. She was active, smart and very intelligent.

I used to sing often and play on my Mahati veena. I would sing Saama gaanam. It attracted the princess like a magnet attracting an iron object. She started taking special care of me and the difference in her treatment of the two of us became unmistakable.

13j. கயாசுரன் முடிவு

காசியில் உரப்பினன் கயமுக அசுரன்.
விசுவநாதரிடம் சரண் புகுந்தவர்களை!

அழிப்பதற்கு விரைந்தவன் மறந்தான்
அழிந்துபோகும் தன் ஆற்றல் என்பதை.

கொடிய நெடிய வடிவெடுத்தார் ஈசன்;
முடி அடைந்தது உலகின் உச்சியை!

கோடி சூரியர்களின் ஒளி வீசியதால்
வடிவைக் காணவும் இயலவில்லை!

நான்முகன் உரைத்ததை மறந்த அசுரன்
மேன்மை அழிக்கும் சிவனுடன் பொருத,

உதைத்தார் ஒரு திருவடியால் பிரான்!
உருண்டு விழுந்தான் தரையில் அசுரன்.

ஒரு பதம் வைத்தார் தலையின் மீது!
ஒரு பதம் வைத்தார் தொடையின் மீது!

கை நகங்களாலேயே கிழித்து எடுத்தார்
மெய் வருந்தாமல் கயாசுரன் தோலை.

பேரொளியால் உலகத்து உயிர்கள்
கண்ணொளி மங்கித் துயருற்றன.

உரித்த தோலை எடுத்துப் போர்த்தி
உடலின் ஒளியை மறைத்தார் ஈசன்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

6#13j. The end of Gajasura.

Gajamuka asuran made a loud noise. He was keen on destroying the people who had taken refuge in Kasi. He forgot Brahma’s warning not to go in front of Siva.

Siva took a huge and terrifying form. His head reached the sky. He was as brilliant as ten million Suns shining together. The people were blinded by that brilliant light.

Gajamukha asuran forgot Brahma’s warning and fought with Siva. Siva kicked him with one leg making the asuran roll on the ground.

Siva planted a foot of the head and the other on the thigh of the asuran. He tore off the thick hide of the Gajamukha asuran with his bare nails. To give relief to the people blinded by the brilliant light of his form, Siva covered himself with the elephant hide.

31d. சூரியனும், சுகரும்.

சக்தியினால் தோற்றுவித்தார் மானசீக புத்திரனை,
யுக்தியுடன் நிறுத்தினார் அவனை சூரியனின் முன்பு.

சாயாசுகர் வணங்கிய பின் கேட்டார் சுகரிடம்,
“மாயையால் என்னைத் தோற்றுவித்தது ஏன்?”

“கங்கைக் கரையில் வசிக்கும் என் தந்தைக்குத்
தங்கு தடையின்றி சேவை செய்து வருவாய்!”

வியாசருக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்வதற்குச்
சாயாசுகர் வசித்தார் சுவர்ணமுகி தீரத்தில்.

கவர்ந்தது சுகரின் அறிவாற்றல் சூரிய்னை;
கதிரவன் கேட்டான் புதிர் போல சுகரிடம்,

"தத்துவம் என்ன உள்ளது என் உருவில்?”
“சித்தத்துக்கு எட்டிய வரை கூறுகின்றேன்,

உண்டாயிற்று பிரணவம் நாரணனிடம்;
உண்டாயிற்று ஆகாசம் பிரணவத்திடம்;

உண்டாயிற்று வாயு ஆகாசத்திடம்;
உண்டாயிற்று அக்னி இவைகளிடம்.

வாயுவும், ஆகாசமும் கலந்த போது
வியாபித்தது அக்னி தோன்றிப் பரவி.

பிரளயம் தோன்றியது ஜல வடிவத்தில்!
பிரளய ஜலம் தோற்றுவித்தது பலப்பல

தங்க நிறம் கொண்ட ஒளிக் கிரணங்களை;
தங்கநிற ஒளிக்கிரணங்கள் ஆயின சூரியனாக!

அண்ட சராசரம் தோன்றியது அதிலிருந்து!
கொண்டிருந்தது வாழ வைக்கும் சக்தியை.

அசையும் அசையாப் பொருட்கள் வாழ
அவசியம் ஆனது அந்த சூரியனின் சக்தி.

சூரிய சக்தியால் மனிதன் பிறக்கிறான்;
சூரிய சக்தியால் மனிதன் வாழ்கிறான்.

அவன் சக்தி அடைகின்றது மீண்டும்
அதே சூரியனை ஒளிக்கிரணம் வழியே.

அனுமதித்தான் சூரியன் சுகர் செல்வதற்கு;
அடைந்தான் வியப்பு அறிவாற்றல் கண்டு!

31d. The Sun and Sage Sukar

Sage Sukar created his son by his yogic power. The son was called as Chaayaa Sugar. “May I know why you have created me father?” the Chaayaa Sukar asked the Sage Sukar. “My father Vyasa lives on the banks of River Ganges. I want you to go and serve him as I myself would do. ”

The Chaayaa Sukar went to the banks of SwarNamuki river to serve Sage Vyasa – father of Sage Sukar. The Sun God was stunned by the intelligence and the yogic power of the sage. “I wish to ask you one more question. What is the tatva involved in me?” the Sun asked the sage.


The sage replied humbly, “I will make an attempt to answer this question to the best of my knowledge. PraNava appeared from Lord Naaraayanaa. The Aakaasam emerged from the PraNava. The Vaayu emerged from the Aakaasam. Agni emerged from these two.

When the Aakaasam and Vaayu merged, Agni emerged from them. PraLaya appear in the form of water. The PraLaya jalam created several golden beams of light. These golden beams of light formed the Sun.


The Universe was created from the energy of the Sun. The Sun holds the power needed for all forms of life. The energy radiated by the Sun is essential for all the living things – those which can move about and those which cannot move about.


Man is born from the power of the Sun. He lives because of the power given by the Sun. His energy returns to the Sun again though the golden beams when he dies.”


Sun was pleased with this answer and allowed the Sage Sukar to pass through in his upward journey. He was wonder struck at the intelligence of the Sage Sukar.

6#26b. தமயந்தியின் காதல் (2)

வியப்படைந்தார் முனிவர் பாரபட்சத்தால்;
வினவினார் என்னிடம் என்ன சங்கதி என்று.

“ஆசை கொண்டுள்ளாள் தமயந்தி என் மீது;
ஆசை கொண்டுள்ளேன் நான் தமயந்தி மீது!”

சினம் பொங்கியது முனிவருக்கு – “இத்தனை
தினம் என்னிடம் சொல்லாதது ஏன்?” என்றார்.

“பிரதிக்ஞையை மறந்து விட்டீர் – என் மேல்
பிரியம் இல்லாத பெண்ணை நேசிக்கின்றீர்.

துரோகம் செய்துவிட்டீர் நீர் எனக்கு – அதனால்
துரோகத்தால் குரங்கு முகம் ஆகக் கடவது!”

சாபம் தந்த முனிவருக்கு தந்தேன் எதிர்ச் சாபம்;
கோபம் மறைத்தது முனிவர் உறவினர் என்பதை.

“வாசம் கிடைக்காது உமக்கு சுவர்க்க லோகத்தில்!
வாசம் கிடைக்கும் உமக்கு மிருத்யு லோகத்தில்!”

பர்வத முனிவர் அகன்று சென்றார் அங்கிருந்து;
பார்த்து வருந்தினாள் தமயந்தி குரங்கு முகத்தை.

பணிவிடைகள் செய்து வந்தாள் முன் போலவே,
“இனி என் முகம் மாறாதோ?” என வருந்தினேன்.

மணப் பருவம் எய்திவிட்ட மகளுக்கு மன்னன்
மணமகன் தேடினான் சிறந்த அரசர்கள் இடையே.

“ரிசி என்பவன் தலை சிறந்த ராஜகுமாரன்;
சரி என்றால் மணம் முடிக்கலாம் தமயந்திக்கு!”

அமைச்சர்கள் அளித்தனர் ஆலோசனையை;
அழைத்தாள் தமயந்தி அந்தரங்கத் தோழியை.

“மஹதி வீணையில் மயங்கி விட்டேன் நான்;
மகத்துவம் வாய்ந்த இசைக்கு அடிமை ஆனேன்.

மணந்தால் நான் மணப்பேன் நாரதரையே;
மணம் புரியேன் வேறு எந்த அரசருடனும்.”

6#26b. Damayanti’s love (2)

Parvata rushi was surprised to note the difference in the hospitality offered to both us. He asked me what was the matter. I told him “Princess Damayanti loves me and I too reciprocate her feelings”

He became wild with anger since I had not shared my innermost thoughts with him as I had promised him earlier. He cursed me “May your face become that of a monkey as a reward for you treachery.”

In my anger I forgot that he was my sister’s son and cursed him back. "May you not get a place in swargga lokam. May you end up in the Mrityu lokam!”

He felt very hurt and went away quickly and quietly. I stayed on there. Damayanti took good care of me and became very sad to see my monkey’s face. I was worrying as to whether or not I will regain my original face.

Meanwhile the king started looking for suitable match to give his daughter’s hand in marriage. His ministers suggested king Richi as suitable for Princess Damayanti.
When she came to now of this Damayanti called her best friend and told her, " I have lost my heart to Narada and his divine music accompanied by his Mahati veena. I won’t marry anyone else now.”
