Dear TBS Sir,

'Waste not; want not' was driven well into our heads, right from the childhood! :)

The credit goes ONLY to my parents! :hail:

I learnt it the Japanese way...Muda, Mura & Muri respectively being 7 Wastes, Uneven work & Overburdening causing stress

Just got power restored today morning. But don't know if it will be off again.

Power cut happened at 4am on Sunday night. Since then we had no connection with the outside world. Luckily place where i am did not have much damage though other nearby areas were not so lucky.

We hired a genset to operate the water motor and was able to charge phones yday. Otherwise 6pm to 10pm it was only candle lights.

Those who use Tata Sky are watching TV but we are yet to get the cable connection rectified! :(

Power goes on and off but milk and veg are safe in the fridge.

Dear TBS Sir,

Thanks for your concern. :)

My son's family is at Bangalore for a week and escaped the effects of Vardha.

The corporation workers were very busy yesterday, clearing the fallen branches of the trees in our area. Surprisingly, not a single

coconut tree fell down as far as I observed, though some were slightly bent. The trees shed all the extra leaves and survived Vardha!

One auto driver predicted that Chennai will starve for rain for the next few years because of the lose of greenery.

Kids are sad because the zoos are closed for two weeks to clear the mess created by the storm.

It might be sensible to move the capital of tamilnadu to interiors like tiruchi etc.

AP has avoided the coast to opt fpr Amaravathi.

Tamilnadu can do the same.

Coasts are likely to have more weather related issues due to climate change.

So many cities have been identified for smart city project in tamilnadu.

One of them could be the new capital.

Trichy would be right choice for alternate Capital...It will also reduce the congestion & pollution!

Since 12[SUP]th[/SUP] afternoon, no 2G, 3G or 4G, No WiFi, No TV , No paper, No power (with the back up we were able to manage only one day).

Drinking water was managed with 20 Ltrs can and for other purpose, we fetched water from our neighbor's well.

‘Vardah’ pushed our life to 30-40 years back, with our resorting to fetching water from the well, using அம்மி மற்றும் குழவி and other household chores done manually(most of the electrical appliances allowed to gather dust).

A deserving break for few days, to spend more time with wife and other members of the family chatting in the living room, reading books in the candle light, cleaning the garden, etc

Just got the power connection restored.

In fact, I enjoyed the break by overcoming every challenge that was thrown on us by the nature.

Nice experience which cannot be forgotten easily like that of last year.

IT and automobile sectors are maximum responsible for influx of people into low lying areas in chennai.

They have damaged the city thru irresponsible expansion into areas which are not safe for human habitation.

Govt has connived with them to make this possible.

There needs to be a Regulator for relocating these companies away from chennai.

It requires a visionary to bring about changes.

Will TN get a good leader who moves away from freebies and film star culture and brings about changes which will benefit people?

TN is likely to lose its clout with centre after political change.

Now it is just one more state which can be safely ignored in all political calculations.

There is no one with political stature to matter at national level.

Let us see how the Tamil people cope with the change.

It is reported that while Chennai city was well prepared to meet flood situation, we were not that much ready to meet the cyclone 'Vardah'.....

Cyclone Vardah: Chennai's Corporation was prepared for floods, but not such intense winds

Equipment like electric saws had to be sourced from neighbouring districts

On the second day after Cyclone Vardah ravaged the city with high-speed winds, Chennai is slowly gathering its bearings.

Fallen trees and branches that had been flung across arterial roads now lay in clumps along the pavements. Outside residences and offices on Wednesday, leaves, twigs and shards of glass were being swept and piled into garbage bins.

On Monday afternoon, Cyclone Vardah hit the coast of North Chennai near Pulicat with wind speeds reaching up to 110-120 kmph. As citizens huddled indoors, powerful gusts of wind wrecked havoc not only along the coastal city but also in the interior parts of Chennai’s neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. Settlements built with aluminium and asbestos sheets have been ripped apart by the cyclonic storm, causing many poor families to return to damaged homes the next day.
Still no power

For more than 24 hours since, the city had no power. With hardly any cash in hand and the inability to make electronic transactions, the morning after the cyclone was saw citizens with inadequate food and necessary supplies.

By Tuesday night, power was restored to many parts of the city. The Times of India reported that power has been restored to around 60% of the city, but might take two more days for power supply to reach the suburbs.

Resilient Chennai:Cyclone Vardah shows why Indian cities must prepare for major disasters

Natural calamities may be as old as the earth. But when suchcatastrophes strike urban centres which have a large concentration of people, infrastructure projects and vital installations, the effect is all the morecataclysmic. Preparedness on the part of the authorities and cohesiveness ofcitizenry can mitigate the impact of unforeseen occurrences.

Just as in the aftermath ofthe devastating floods that swamped Chennai last December, cyclone Vardah thattore through the city on Monday brought to the fore the fighting spirit andresilience of its residents. Thousands of trees were felled, power tripped, mobile networks went down, travel by air, rail or road ground to a halt. Justmoments after the storm blew over, citizens were out on the streets doing everythingwithin their means to get their city back on its feet.

Unlike in the run-up to thedeluge last year, the authorities had put in place elaborate plans to cope withthe after effects of the storm that had Chennai in its eye. But apparentlythere was a miscalculation: floods were anticipated, not the high velocitywinds that swept through the city bringing down the trees on the city roads.Government agencies went into overdrive clearing the roads and restoringessential services. They were joined by motley bands of volunteers and thecommon people who filled in the gaps in resources and manpower. These namelesspeople were everywhere, guiding ambulances, reaching food to those who losttheir homes, coming to the aid of the infirm and manning helplines. Within 24hours of the storm, power was restored in most parts of the city, mobilenetworks were up, the airport resumed operations, bus services picked up,traffic flowed freely on the roads and offices reported good attendance.

Here is the opinion of water management expert on CMDA's Plans......

It is reported that a sizable portion of the green cover of Chennai City was lost due to Vardah..

How long it will take to regain the lost green cover....?

CMDA land plan change tied to Dec floods

The devastation caused by the December last deluge was also partly due to the change in land use plans by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority, according to water management expert Dr Christoph Woiwode, visiting professor at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.

Experts believe that the redesignation of large tracks of land in the city, identified as low-lying in Chennai’s First Master-plan, as residential areas in the Second Master-plan was a major cause for floods. “You build structures in the drainage system of the city, which is in low lying areas, and the flow of water gets blocked resulting in stagnation,” he explained.

Chennai corporation is NOT ready to manage heavy floods. They are bluffing! :lie:

Till last year, water used to enter the compounds only when the road gets 6'' deep water. But this time, since the roads were raised

by 3'', dirty water entered the compounds within hours of the heavy rains. The storm water drains are not functioning well at all! :nono:

Sad state of affairs!
Vardah aftermath: Animal shelters in Chennai destroyed, here’s how you can help

No power, no water and many injured animals, what Vardah left behind.

Uprooted trees, fallen roofs and no power: while timely warnings and proper preparation by the Tamil Nadu government helped soften the blow of Cyclone Vardah, Chennai did not emerge unscathed.
People for Animals (PFA) and Blue Cross in Chennai are struggling to repair their shelters and support over 1,000 animals they house.
With no power since Monday, the PFA shelter has been finding it tough to clear the debris in their four-acre shelter Atthivakkam Village, Redhills in Chennai. Antony Rubin, a volunteer with PFA describes the scene which greeted him when he went to the shelter after the cyclone subsided.
“Trees had fallen on the building, the roofing sheets had flown off the cattle and horse shelters and even the kitchen. There was no power which meant the motor didn’t work for drawing water. And with the kitchen roof gone, it’s very difficult to cook given the weather conditions right now,” Antony says. Overall, the assessment of the damage caused to property is approximately Rs 12 lakh.
PFA volunteers have been trying desperately to arrange a motor or backup generator to be able to draw water from the borewell for the animals. “We have been told that it may take a week to ten days to restore power here as this shelter is in the outskirts of Chennai,” says Antony. As of now, they have been manually drawing water from the well.
