With power, phone and internet services affected, Chennai is still recovering from Cyclone Vardah

The cyclone hit the city on Monday. Its after-effects are still being felt

Nearly a week after Cyclone Vardah rattled the city, bringing normal life to a halt for a few days, Chennai is still reeling from the aftershock of the powerful storm.

With powerful winds that blew up to the speed of 120 kmph, around one lakh trees were estimated to have have been uprooted across the city by the cyclone, causing a loss of almost one-fourth of the city’s foliage, reported The Hindu. Many of these trees fell on transmission lines, damaging them severely and cutting power supply to scores of residential areas.
Employees of Chennai’s city corporation and electricity board were seen hard at work throughout the week, clearing the streets of fallen trees and repairing electricity lines. But with frequent power cuts and sporadic phone and internet signals, the city is still on the long route to restoration

In many areas the transformers are badly damaged and in many cases fully fallen down and they have to be replaced fully and it will take a long time for the authorities to replace all those damaged transformers and till then we have to bear it up with the temporary power that is being supplied now . Since the climate is nice and pleasant it does not require us to switch on the fans or A/Cs and so it cam be managed . But credit must be given to the authorities for working hard as much as they can to clear the fallen tress and restore at least temporary power and we must be patient with them . I feel it will take 2 weeks or even a month for full normalcy to be restored . A very bad December so far . IT seems Chennai is having "December Curse " .

I agree Sir,

The vardah cyclone has torn Chennai city and suburbs withmonstrous ferocity, uprooted well grown decades year old trees and power cables,toppled cell phone towers and vehicles, etc and caused destruction in unprecedented scale.

We need the thank the staff of all Government Agenciesinvolved viz. Natinal Disaster Relief Force, Home Guards and Civil DefenceVolunteers, Police, Fire and Rescue Service and Coporation Authorities and volunteers who have dutifully went extra mile to ensure normalcy.

Post-disaster management is something very serious and the Health Department is taking all out efforts.

We need to salute all these unsung heroes…
