After being bedridden for four long years of his life,

Paawan Gaur, a student from Kota, has set a very inspiring example for all those who have certain dreams to achieve, but find their path spotted with hurdles and difficulties. This 19-year-old did not let his illness come in the way of his dream to study Astrophysics, and has today bagged a seat for the same at the University of California. This is his story.

After being bedridden for four long years of his life, 19-year-old Paawan Gaur has successfully secured a seat for himself in the B.Sc Astrophysics program of University of California, San Diego. He has also received an internship offer from NASA.

It started with common fever and body pain. But in a matter of just two months after the diagnosis, it became extremely difficult for him to stand for even a minute. For the next four years, he had to spend most of his time in bed.

Because of the prolonged illness, suffering, and his inability to go to school, Paawan went into depression. But his father was determined to motivate him and help him in fighting the disease in the best possible way. Devendra Gaur counselled his son to continue with his studies.

While he had scored poorly in class IX because of the illness, the young man came back with a stronger will to beat his suffering. He had always been passionate about becoming a scientist, and that dream helped him move forward in spite for his pain. He scored 9.4 CGPA marks in his class X exams, which he had to take while lying on a stretcher.

But because of his bedridden state, Paawan had also gained a lot of weight, and doctors informed that there was a risk of him developing lifestyle diseases like hypertension, diabetes and heart ailments. Following this, his family consulted an Ayurvedic doctor in Beawar, Rajasthan. The new treatment began in 2013 and his condition improved to a large extent. The next step from here was to concentrate on weight reduction. With the help of medicines and physiotherapy, Paawan was able to lose about 40kg in just one year.

Thanks to his treatment, he was able to walk with some assistance while appearing for his class XII exam. He passed with flying colours, scoring 91%. Unfortunately, he could not appear for his IIT entrance exam because he was unwell on that day. But his dream to study astrophysics, kept him going and inspired him to apply to many different colleges. Based on his SAT score, he was able to finally bag a seat at the University of California.

As of now, Paawan is 70% fit. He is able to walk slowly, but needs frequent rest. He is also able to sit in a classroom, but on a specially designed seat which reduces his pain.

Three cheers to his spirit, and determination to fight all odds that came as hurdles on his way towards success

Delhi rag picker feeds and takes care of 400 dogs daily

Delhi rag picker feeds and takes care of 400 dogs daily

June 28, 2015

61-year-old Pratima Devi, a ragpicker, looks after over 400 dogs - about 200 around her home in a shanty in south Delhi

stary-dogs-_647_062815053225.jpg

Adjacent to the PVR Anupam miltiplex in south Delhi's Saket neighbourhood stands a tin shack on wooden slabs and decorated with a few torn rugs. In and around this shanty, stray dogs can be seen walking around like disciples of a holy saint.

The shanty belongs to Pratima Devi, who looks older than her 61 years. She has lived here for more than three decades and is a ragpicker. Better known as Amma in the neighbourhood, she earns only to look after hundreds of dogs in the locality.

"I look after over 400 dogs - about 200 around my home. Others are scattered in the courtyard of the PVR complex up to J-block (a little over half a kilometre away). My dogs never bite. They have been sterilised and vaccinated by the MCD (civic body)," Pratima said.

She nurses the injured dogs and feeds them from a civic van in the evenings - the fare includes milk, stew and mutton. Pratima has earned quite a reputation in the locality today and many neighbours make a contribution toward feeding the dogs.

"I was married at the age of seven to a man who was more than 10 years older than me. My husband often came home drunk and used to beat me. My mother and I have suffered at the hands of our in-laws," recounted Pratima, who came to Delhi in the early 1980s from Nandigram in West Bengal.

At the age of 14 she bore her first child who came to Delhi to work as a five-year-old. Pratima had already parted ways with her husband and was working as a domestic in Kolkata. She decided to move to Delhi to be with her older son. She has two more children.

Amma said she has worked as a domestic in model-turned-actor Rahul Dev's home. "He was very fond of my paranthas," she said, adding the actor still comes to visit her. She later ran a tea-stall near PVR for more than 25 years. But popularity came at a price.

"A neighbour who owned a departmental store conspired with two policemen and burnt down my tea-stall along with my house. I was injured and many of my dogs were also burnt. They spared no one," she recalled, while showing burn marks on her feet.

Pratima has now bought a house in Sangam Vihar, some five km away, where her children live today, but she refuses to go as her adopted children - the dogs - are not welcome there.

"My children do not want me to stay with them because of the dogs. And I cannot leave them. Who will take care of the dogs if I leave them," she asked.

Mental health professionals, however, have a different take on the issue. They feel that dogs sometimes fill emotional gaps in people's lives, but add that when socialisation is exclusively limited to pets, there were possibly underlying issues.

"It's like dogs domesticated humans and vice the versa. Most people feel comfortable with animals. Nothing wrong with it, but confining oneself to animals definitely is (not good)," Suyesha Singh Rathore, a counselling psychologist, told IANS.

"During social anxiety, an anxiety disorder in which a person has an excessive and unreasonable fear of social situations, humans often avoid the social interaction for relaxation but unknowingly tend to behave differently. Some prefer talking to walls while others to birds, plants and sometime animals. The most common state is 'parler a chien' (talking to dogs) as social adaptations of dogs and humans are similar enough. The dogs can live perfectly happy lives surrounded by humans and vice versa," Rathore added.

"Fear of being closely watched, judged and criticised by others may lead to anxiety and self-consciousness," she pointed out.

However, there are several reports, including one cited by New York Times, that speaks of nor just the benefits of cuddling a pooch, but also explains the science behind the compelling draw of "puppy eyes" that your pet may subject you to. The feeling of wellness you get while playing with your pet may be rooted in your brain chemistry. And it works both ways.

"The look of love can also be in the dog's eyes. Dogs who trained a long gaze on their owners had elevated levels of oxytocin, a hormone produced in the brain that is associated with nurturing and attachment, similar to the feel-good feedback that bolsters bonding between parent and child."

sendhil%20new.jpg

It seems Angelina Jolie, a UN Special Envoy for Refugees, really takes her job seriously. She and husband Brad Pitt are now reportedly adopting a Syrian refugee. It is said that Angelina met the child, one of three brothers, on one of her visits to the war torn nation. And while she wanted to adopt all three, husband Brad Pitt drew the line at just one.

According to reports, Angelina was heartbroken to learn that the brothers lost their mother to the war and saw their father being taken away by Syrian soldiers. It may take another four to five months for the adopted child to reach the United States thanks to all the red tape involved.

From Selling Vegetables to Saving Lives

From Selling Vegetables to Saving Lives

July 24, 2015

We often get to hear complaints on mounting consultation fees of doctors. In fact, most of us question the medical world for transforming into a “industry”, where the wellness of patients has become the least priority and annual profits have taken centre stage. But there are always some exceptions, and here is one.

This story is of a woman whose life has seen phases right from staying in a slum and selling vegetables to becoming a surgeon and cancer expert.

She remained unmarried and went on to become the Head of Department, Oncology and Director in the prestigious Kidwai Hospital, Bangalore. Presenting to you all one of India’s most reputed Oncologists, Vice President of Karnataka Cancer Society, and a recipient of many awards, Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane. [Do Read Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane Biography]

Deshmane: A Unique Surname

I come from one of most backward castes that is supposed to be stitching not the new footwear, instead the used ones. My father Baburao was influenced by the freedom movement and believed in the empowerment of all. Though he was formally not educated, he broke caste professional barrier and learnt letters on his own- Kannada, Marathi, Hindi and English. I was born in 1955, followed by a brother and 6 sisters. We were 10 of us at the slum house, which belonged to my Dad’s
sister.

Getting a single meal per day was a challenge and affording basic amenities was a dream. My parents did odd jobs like being a coolie, cutting, fetching, and selling wood.

Later on, my dad joined a mill and rose in ranks- thanks to his ability to connect with people. They fondly started calling him Deshmanya and he replaced his caste surname with it. I was named after Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, sister of Pandit Nehru and the first woman to become the President of the UN General Assembly, followed by a “Deshmane” surname- Deshmanya’s daughter!

Moonless Night Paves Way for Medicine

My father had a dream of getting me into medicine and to serve the poorest of the poor. Having such dreams while still in the slums itself is surprising and sending a slum girl to school shows the vision my father had for us.

Meanwhile, my mother set up a small vegetable shop, meaning she would buy vegetables wholesale and try to make mere profits for running daily lives. My brother and I used to carry those vegetable on our heads to help our mother.

I excelled in my studies and I had sensed the end of my education when I cleared my 12[SUP]th[/SUP] exams, because I was convinced that my parents won’t be able to fund my studies anymore. The education of my siblings also had to be taken care of.

I remember that moonless night when my mother gave away her only ornament, her mangal sutra, to my father so that he could take a loan for my MBBS entrance at KMC Hubli. I am what I am today because of the sacrifices made by my parents and siblings. Can I ever pay them back??? I don’t think so!

We could see tears welling up in Dr. Vijayalakshmi’s eyes. We were speechless.
First Year of MBBS Failed

Until then, I had studied in Kannada and the medium for medicine was English.

I didn’t have the luxury to even get an apron stitched. I borrowed an old one from a lab assistant.

Later on, a senior of mine gave away his stipend so that I could get my own. Throughout my career, I have been very lucky to have got guidance, support, and love from my peers and patients.

I failed my first year since I faced trouble facing exams in English, although I understood the lectures. Thanks to my professors, I picked it up in the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] year and then there was no stopping. I went on to become the first rank holder of my university. When this news was out, there were celebrations at my home when the roof was literally about to fall!

I went on to pursue MS in surgery and started earning when I joined Kidwai Institute of Oncology as a senior resident of Surgical Oncology. I specialised in the treatment of breast cancer. Meanwhile, my brother, Ajay Ghosh (again, named after famous Bengali freedom fighter}, finished his LLB and started working.

Time had finally arrived to replace the roof of our home!

Being Just the Reason

I love my profession and believe in constant learning. I bought photocopying machine to constantly update and maintain a database of knowledge. I kept interacting and building a strong bond with my patients. Whenever I operate, I put all the weight on God and seek His intervention for the success.

I feel I am just the “nimitta” (reason) here. I’ve been shaped by my Gurus, raised by my peers, loved by my patients, and it is His willing that I am in this profession that saves and serves the society.

I have had a long career and I retired in 2015. But I think my work is half done. I have been a part of numerous social drives, reach outs, awareness camps, research works, and education programs in villages.

I will continue to do so dedicating 15 days in a month to these activities. Rest 15 days I would be providing free service and be available in Karnataka Cancer Society.

Our ancient scriptures have portrayed doctors as God, stating “Vaidhyo Narayano Hari”. For the first time we witnessed why this saying was right.

A flower that blossomed in the dirt of slum has given so much to our society and still has so much to offer
.

Also, having to keep the story as short as possible, we have skipped an interesting narration of how Dr. Vijayalakshmi’s sisters succeeded, with 4 of them getting their PhDs, and excelling in their field of choice.

We wish Dr. Vijayalakshmi Deshmane and her siblings the best of health and hope that their lives will inspire and guide many of us.

Mumbai’s Most Selfless Philanthropist

Mumbai’s Most Selfless Philanthropist

Meet Sandeep Bacche, whose rickshaw boasts free Wi-Fi, a payphone, weather and stock market updates, and a whole lot of generosity.

Sandeep is 37 years old, and was born and raised in the Bandra-Khar area of Mumbai. He lives in a 10-foot-by-10-foot room with his wife, father, and two children.

If you find yourself aboard his rickshaw – as I did one Tuesday morning – you’re likely a jaded Mumbai-dweller without the time or inclination to look around and notice its wonders.

But even in my pre-caffeine stupor, I couldn’t help but giggle out loud at the STD/PCO payphone mounted next to his meter.

Noticing my amusement, Bacche informed me that his rickshaw also has Wi-Fi and a TV screen.

By this point, my curiosity had been sparked. Knowing that I only had a five-minute ride (sue me, I’m lazy), I asked Bacche to pull over so I could observe the magic in full. He turned out to be unbelievably friendly and was happy to give me a tour.

So, here goes. Every morning, Bacche puts the day’s papers in his rickshaw, and writes announcements of the day’s weather forecast and economy updates on a board above the windshield.

grid-cell-32682-1424268832-8.jpg

grid-cell-32682-1424268833-11.jpg

He also writes birthday wishes to any celebrities whose birthdays happen to be on that day. However, he told me he doesn’t do this for politicians. When I asked why, he said he hates politicians. “When my mother was dying of cancer, I went to a lot of people for help, including some MLAs, and they didn’t give me any time,” he told me in Hindi. “I went to their offices many times then I got tired of it.”

His rickshaw has a first aid kit as well as some spiritual first aid.

He changes the medicines and cotton in his first aid kit once every three months (even though they expire much later) so as to ensure their hygiene.

And his rickshaw provides some sage advice we could all do well to heed.

He also stocks the rickshaw daily with two water bottles (one for him, one for his customers), hot chai to be served to customers all day, and candy to give to children. Mainstays of his vehicle include a tissue box and perfume.

But most importantly, Bacche’s rickshaw reveals his extremely philanthropic nature. In the back is a donation box where you can pick up free candy in return for donations. All collections go to cancer relief.

In the background, please note photographs of Bacche with celebrities including Rajdeep Sardesai, Salman Khan, and Cyrus Sahukar.

He gives discounts on rides to the elderly, the handicapped, and the newlywed.

Bamboo bridge, in 8 days!

Bamboo bridge, in 8 days!

September 24, 2015

Until last month, the children of Sathe Nagar had to wade through a foul-smelling nullah in order to get to school. They had gotten used to their plight. Moved by these woeful conditions, 17-year-old-student Eshan Balbale built a bamboo bridge connecting either sides of the nullah. The four-foot wide and 100 foot long bridge took eight days to complete - an initiative, which politicians and the corporation failed to address for years, despite several complaints from locals.

The dangers of walking through sewage everyday

When the teenager visited the area to get a better understanding of the problem in August, the residents opened up about their troubles. "They explained that crossing the nullah came with risks such as skin infections, malaria, dengue and other diseases. I felt terrible when I saw the children wade through the disgusting sludge," he says. A few residents had even lost their lives while crossing the nullah when water levels rose during heavy showers. During his interactions, Balbale realised that parents were even reluctant to send their children to school. They didn't want them to cross the nullah. Other factors, such as having to walk 1.5 km to reach the school and the unavailability of autos, were contributing to a high dropout rate. In addition to this, about 15,000 residents had to cross the rancid nullah to get to the market, Kurla and Mankhurd railway stations.

50 people can cross over safely at a time

iamin%206_1443090384.jpg

Balbale saw that a bridge was the need of the hour. "But I realised that building a concrete bridge would require permission from the BMC and that can be time consuming. So I chose to build the bridge with bamboo, which is light yet sturdy. The children needed the bridge immediately as the water level rises during the monsoon season," he says. The bridge, which can carry up to 50 people at a time, was inaugurated on August 29 and connects Sathe Nagar to the PGMP colony.

Two months ago, Balbale set up the NGO Nirbhay Yuva Pratishthan, where he encourages other youngsters to participate in similar philanthropic ventures. "My parents are very supportive of my interest and help me by providing financial aid," says the Class XII commerce student of Thane's Bedekar College. Although he is interested in pursuing higher studies in aviation, Balbale wants to continue balancing his studies with his work at the NGO.

The young altruist will maintain the bridge until a more permanent solution is implemented by the authorities. "I plan to visit the site at least once a month. If the bridge is used responsibly, it should easily last for a couple of years. In the meantime, I will repair the bridge as and when the need arises," he promises.
"They are humans and deserve basic sanitation facilities..."

iamin2%206_1443090384.jpg

Balbale is now looking to improve sanitation conditions in the area by building eight to 10 toilets in the area for which, he will seek permission from the ward office. "The residents say that the BMC is reluctant to construct toilets, since there are illegal residents. But they are humans and deserve basic sanitation facilities like the rest of us," he says.

A deeply mature Balbale explains that an urge to help those who cannot avail amenities that were accessible to him keeps him motivated. "Ever since I was in Class VIII, I would see my parents help other people and I made it a point to donate my clothes, school bags and books to our domestic help and her children. I like to understand the problems people have and help them accordingly. It is a learning experience for me," he concludes.

Slum dwellers in Mumbai can now construct toilets in their homes

Slum dwellers in Mumbai can now construct toilets in their homes

September 23, 2015

Sanitation is a right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution. But up until now, it was considered illegal for slum dwellers in Mumbai to construct toilets in their homes. -

However, with the aim of curtailing open defecation practices, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued an order allowing residents of the 740 slums in the city to construct toilets in their hutments. -

slum-mumbai.jpg

Over 60 lakh people living in the slums of the city will thus have access to sanitation facilities, and they will be linked with the city’s sewerage network. A month ago, the solid waste department of BMC had started issuing permits for slum dwellers to construct toilets.

According to a timeline drawn by the department, most of these people can have a toilet in the next few years, if everything goes as planned.

As people need water connection to construct a toilet, BMC’s administration has also created a proposal to ease norms that need to be followed while laying pipelines. This scheme will be presented to the standing committee on Wednesday. According to the scheme, slum dwellers will be provided with water connections at the rate of Rs 4.32 per 1,000 litres of water supplied.

The residents will have two options. They can link up the plumbing lines of their toilets to the sewage pipes that will be installed in the slums, or can share a septic tank which will be periodically emptied by the BMC. Septic tanks will be constructed in case several households are constructed very close to each other, and laying pipelines is not easy.

When all different ways of trying to curb open defecation by imposing fines failed, the BMC’s senior management, led by municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta, decided that they should come up with solutions rather than just imposing penalties. They have also linked this scheme to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in order to incentivise the project.

“If we link it to the PM’s Swacch Bharat scheme, we can give each family that wishes to build a toilet Rs 5,000 to help things along,” said a senior corporation official to the Time of India.

This will also bring a great deal of relief to the conservancy workers who have to clear human waste, a practice which in itself is deemed illegal in India.

“The job of cleaning human waste on roads is really difficult. By allowing construction of toilets within slums, it will not only benefit the slum dwellers, but will come as great relief to conservancy workers,” said Ramesh Haralkar, a retired BMC employee who worked in the conservancy department to Times of India.

While discussing the issue of Right to Life, guaranteed under Article 21 of our Constitution, the Supreme Court had delivered a famous verdict in 1995, saying – “Right to shelter, therefore, includes adequate living space, safe and decent structure, clean and decent surroundings, sufficient light, pure air and water, electricity, sanitation and other civil amenities like roads etc. so as to have easy access to his daily avocation.

Sanitation in this statement includes toilets. Hence, the Bombay High court had relied upon this judgement last year while asking BMC to supply water in “illegal slums” as well; that is, slums which have come up after the Jan. 1, 2000, the cut-off year which divides slums which have structural protection by the BMC, and those that don’t have the protection.

Hidekichi Miyazaki of Japan set a new record as the world's oldest competitive sprinter this week, one day after turning 105, but said he was disappointed at falling short of his own personal best. "I wanted to shave off a few more seconds as I got 36 seconds while training," Miyazaki, told the media after completing his heat with a time of 42.22 on Wednesday at the Kyoto Masters Athletics Autumn Competition. His personal record of 34.10, chalked up when he was 103, remains unbeaten for any one who is more than a 100 years old.

Born on Sept. 22, 1910, Miyazaki was already eight when World War One ended and the Titanic was being built and 34 when Japan was defeated in World War Two. According to the Guinness World Records, Miyazaki did not start running until he was in his 90s, since many of the friends with whom he had played the Japanese board game "Go" had died.

AFPMiyazaki is known as the "Golden Bolt" for imitating Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt's famed lightening bolt pose. He also wants an opportunity to challenge the fastest man in the world. "I would still love to compete against him," said Miyazaki, who loses valuable seconds because he cannot hear the starter's gun go off."Two or three years ago Bolt came to Japan and said he wanted to meet me. There was a call about it but I was out and he left without meeting me. I felt deeply sorry," he said.

He says that the secret to his success is exercising daily, eating in moderation and chewing food properly. "The doctors are all surprised. It's all about being in good health," he told reporters. He stands just 1.53 metres (five feet) tall and weighs in at 42 kilograms (92 pounds). He trains rigourously by keeping a kilogram weight into a rucksack and walking daily around his local park in Kyoto, where he lives.Japan, which on Monday marked "Respect for the Aged Day, tops the world in number of people over age 65 years old. The 104-Year-Old Street Artist Who Yarn-Bombed Her Town

The 104-Year-Old Street Artist Who Yarn-Bombed Her Town

Grace Brett might be the oldest living street artist in the world. The 104-year-old grandmother of six is a member of a knitting club known as the “Souter Stormers,” who recently yarn-bombed the towns of Selkirk, Ettrickbridge, and Yarrow in Scotland.

The “Stormers” spent nearly a year secretly planning the project, which was part playful prank, part street art installation. The mischievous knitters took to the streets this month, covering fences, benches, and lamp poles all across the towns in elaborate knitted art. There were colorful knitted houses, animals, and little yarn families. But though their art is playful, the project was no joke for the secret knitters—the owner of a textiles shop in Selkirk reports that “the words ‘I could tell you but I’d have to kill you’ passed the lips of the knitters several times” as they prepared for the massive yarn bomb event.

Brett, who was born in London in 1910, and worked as a telephone operator, told the Daily Record, “I liked seeing my work showing with everyone else and thought the town looked lovely.” In a video interview, the centenarian rebel told her interviewer, “It’s very nice of you to take any notice of it.”

Artist Stan Herd Plants a 1.2-Acre Field Inspired by Van Gogh’s 1889 Painting “Olive Trees”

September 23, 2015

herd-1.jpg

We’ve seen a number of interesting projects lately that attempt to bring art from inside museums into the outdoors. Artist Stan Herd has been doing just that for years by using fields as his canvas for both original compositions and interpretations of historical art.

His latest work is a monumental 1.2-acre interpretation of Van Gogh’s 1889 Painting “Olive Trees” planted in Minneapolis. The piece was commissioned by theMinneapolis Institute of Art and involved weeks of mowing, digging, planting, and earthscaping to create the piece viewable from the air near the Minneapolis airport. If you happen to see the piece when flying into the city, you can head to the museum to see the real thing.

Herd’s first outdoor land art piece (he refers to them as “earthworks”) was an ambitions 160-acre portrait of Kiowa Indian chief Satanta, that he physically carved into a Kansas prairie in 1981. He’s since created dozens of works around the world, and notably inspired Japanese artists in Inakadate province north of Tokyo to plant a series of incredible rice paddy artworks.

The Van Gogh field will be on view through the fall in Minneapolis, after which Herd plans to mow it down in concentric circles similar to the Dutch artists’s iconic painting style. You can read more about the piece in the StarTribune. (thnx, Randy!)

60-Year-Old Milkman From UP Saved 15 Kids From Drowning

60-Year-Old Milkman From UP Saved 15 Kids From Drowning

September 26, 2015

When he boarded a boat with his cans of milk on Thursday, milkman Ramjit Yadav wouldn't have thought he'd become a hero by the time the day would end. And why not? Saving 15 children from drowning is not a joke, especially when you're 60 years old.
Yadav, a milkman of Dallapati village in Mirzapur district, would take the boat everyday to reach Mirzapur town, situated across the Ganga, 250 kms east of Lucknow. Thursday was no different. But on that day, 15 other students had also boarded the boat on their way to school in Rampur. However, midway the boat started taking in water due to some unknown damage.

By this time the students had started panicking, and shouting for help. Eventually, the boatman lost control of his vessel and it capsized, leaving everyone on board in danger of losing their lives. But that wasn't to be as Yadav caught hold of one of the boys, and asked the others to hold on to each other as he swam across the river. Some other locals passing by got inspired by Yadav and jumped into the river to help everyone to safety. Since then Yadav has not only become a hero in his own village, but in neighbouring villages as well. Let's make him a national hero, shall we?

Coimbatore Boy Writes Exam With A Blindfold To Spread An Important Message

Coimbatore Boy Writes Exam With A Blindfold To Spread An Important Message

September 26, 2015

R Madheswaran, a Class 7 boy at Sri Ramakrishna Matriculation Higher Secondary in Coimbatore, has normal eyesight. He wanted to feel how the blind experienced the world and to spread awareness on eye donation. For this purpose, the 12-year-old decided to try something novel. On Friday, Madheswaran appeared for the quarterly exam blindfolded and completed it in the prescribed two hours. The boy said he took on this challenge to spread awareness on the many talents that blind people possess.Madheswaran possesses some "cool" skills like being able to watch television and understand dialogues despite it being on mute, being able to read phone messages, question papers and text books blindfolded. The boy decided to try his newly acquired skills in his quarterly exams. He decided to write a two-hour long English paper with a blindfold on.

untitled-1210-750x500_1443268797_725x725.jpg

The paper was not set in Braille and neither were the alphabets embossed. "Every alphabet and number has a different smell, so by just concentrating on the sheet of a paper for a few minutes I can read the words and sentences in my mind," he said.

The boy can also write his answers on a proper ruled sheet of paper, without his sentences and handwriting running haywire on the paper. "Again from the smell and writing on the sheets earlier, I know where the margins are and know where the inked lines fall. So I naturally write between the lines," he said.
Madheswaran's parents said their son acquired these special skills after they had sent him to a brain fold activation programme. "We sent him to a programme called TIA, where they teach them aerobics, fingering exercises along with other brain exercises. After the beginner level classes itself, his concentration improved and he could sense a lot of things with a blindfold on," says his businessman father, N Rajendran.

His parents suggested that he try writing an exam with a blindfold on to spread awareness on eye donation to the many blind people who require it.
"I realised how the blind see the world how strong their concentration was on sensing things they could not see. I realised how powerfully their lives would change if given a pair of eyes. So my parents approached my school and my teachers readily allowed it," said Madheswaran. "It will also be very helpful if many visually impaired students could get this brain training," said school vice-principal Vanaja.

Kid With A Weighing Machine To Make Money For His Education

Kid Sits Outside A Metro Station With A Weighing Machine To Make Money For His Education

September 25, 2015

The world has always been divided into two classes: the rich and the poor. With time, there did emerge something known as a little rich or the little poor and the middle-class too but, let’s presume for a moment that there’s just the rich and the poor. The poor have always been given the worst of manual labours to make their living and one of the easiest and often most scorned upon profession is “begging”. But not all are beggars. There are some who sing in hopes someone will pay them for their efforts just like the affluent pay thousands to hear other “rich singers” sing. And there are some who hawk simple wares in hopes that you will buy them and help them earn their living without bargaining. The poor indeed have a hard life in our country. But if you thought this story is of a “poor” boy you are wrong.

Because someone, who respects books and knows the value of education can never be poor. This boy (see picture) hardly looks to be over 10 years old. But that does not mean he doesn’t know the value and importance of studying. But unfortunately for him, he is financially unstable. The boy sits outside Noida city metro station everyday after 7 PM with a weighing scale. His aim? To earn enough money to be able to finish his studies. He might be sitting on the pavement waiting for people to assist him but he does not sit idle. He sits surrounded by books and completes his homework/studies for the next day.

18-Year-Old Died Waiting For A Liver Donor, Parents Donate Her Organs

September 26, 2015

Akansha Joshi, an 18-year-old student with a failing liver, died last month waiting for a liver donor. But what she couldn't get during her last days, she gave away in death. The teenager became an organ donor whose kidneys saved the lives of two recipients.

jap-700_1443253348.jpg

Akansha, who aspired to be a doctor and had gone to Kota to prepare for the entrance test, was diagnosed with a hepatitis A infection which led to acute liver failure. No matching donor could be found for a liver transplant and she died at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS). Doctors said when her parents were told about the prospect of donating Akanksha's organs, they immediately consented. "It is overwhelming. They had just lost their daughter but they overcame the grief to help others in need," said Dr S K Sarin, director of ILBS.

The Time Challenge

The procedure, however, was a huge challenge. Usually, organs are harvested from brain-dead patients but, in this case, the procedure had to be conducted after cardiac death — when blood supply to organs stops and the time-window for harvesting is very small. Right after death, doctors quickly flushed the abdomen and arteries with ice to freeze the internal organs before. "Her blood pressure levels were very low and inconsistent as she slipped into death due to which brain death could not be certified. Two teams were kept on standby and within five minutes of cardiac death the retrieval process began," said doctors.

Long road to recovery

While in a normal transplant the organs revive within hours of transplantation, organs retrieved after cardiac death take longer to revive. In this case, the doctors said, it took nearly 48 hours for the kidneys to revive in the two recipients, a 52-year-old male patient from Kota in Rajasthan and another 58-year-old man from Delhi. "One of them has been discharged and another is likely to be discharged in few days. Both patients are doing fine," said a member of the renal transplantation unit at ILBS. ILBS doctors said Akanksha, a resident of Kotdwar in Uttarakhand, diagnosed with hepatitis A while studying in Kota. Her condition deteriorated despite medical intervention necessitating liver transplant. "It is an irony that the girl could not get a donor herself but she gave life to others in death. Her kidneys have been used while her heart valve and cornea have been preserved for donation," said a doctor.

90% Of people waiting for organs, don't get them in time

More than two lakh Indians require organ transplantation annually. However, less than 10% are able to get this timely help. Although the number of organ donors and transplantations in India have increased significantly over the last decade, it is not sufficient. Medical experts say organ donation immediately after the heart stop beating can help increase the organ pool. Countries such as Spain, UK and Australia are already doing this.

'Lack Of Awareness' killing patients

Aarti Vij, chief of the Organ Retrieval and Banking Organisation at AIIMS, said one of the common causes for refusal of organ donation is lack of awareness about the consequences of brain death — irreversible loss of brain functions. "Most families think their loved ones have a chance to recover till the heart is working. But if we can evolve standard operating procedures for retrieval of organs even after the heart beat stops, many such families may agree to donate," she said. The experts said kidneys and liver can be retrieved even after the loss of circulatory function, also referred to as cardiac death, from patients who are on a ventilator due to irreversible brain injuries.(Originally published in The Times Of India | All images for representational purposes only)
