More than one lakh children go missing in our country every year. Most of them are never found again by their families and vanish into the unknown. Vansh could have been one such child had not an NGO called Drishti, 1,500 km away from his home, found his father with the help of some good people in Sikkim and the Station House Officer in Modinagar.


Vansh is the second among three sons of Mr. Babli Gujjar. He lost his mother when he was just four. Mr. Gujjar works in an oxygen plant located in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. After the death of his wife, his mother took care of the children but, just a few years ago, she too passed away. Now, Mr.Gujjar had no choice other than leaving the children alone at his residence at Modinagar, Sikri Khurd, in the Gaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh (UP), when he went to work.


The children used to play at home after coming back from school, until their father came back from work. Mr. Gujjar felt bad about this but he was just an oxygen cylinder filler who earned about enough to feed his children and could not afford a caretaker for them.

On June 22, 2013, just like any other day, 8-year-old Vansh was playing with his brothers, Dipanshu and Varun, after coming back home from school. But Vansh wandered off too far while playing and reached the railway gate located almost 1 km away from his house. He found a stationary train there and, out of curiosity, climbed aboard. Soon, the train started moving. A helpless and scared Vansh, not knowing what else to do, sat quietly till the train reached Chennai.

When he got down at Chennai, two people took him to Siliguri, and then to a place near Singla Tea Estate,West Bengal. Later, a Lepcha couple from Soreng, Sikkim, ‘adopted’ him illegally and kept him in their house, as a foster child.

Vansh was illegally sold to a childless couple in Sikkim.​

Unaware of all this, Vansh’s distraught father filed a missing complaint with the Modinagar police station about his son. But, unfortunately, he did not have a recent photograph of Vansh that he could give to the police, and hence it was all the more difficult to trace him. Finally, after one year (in 2014), Mr. Gujjar found a photograph of Vansh that had been clicked by a relative at a marriage function. He gave this to the police.

“I went wherever possible to search for my child. I searched all around Modinagar, Gaziabad, Delhi, and even Haridwar. I used to take leave from work for 10 to 15 days at a stretch and go looking for Vansh. I lost all hope of getting him back,” says Mr. Gujjar.

In the meantime, the couple who had adopted Vansh started abusing him physically whenever he demanded to go back home. Vansh, too, lost all hope of returning to Modinagar.
However, a good samaritan who stayed near Vansh’s new house couldn’t see the pain in his eyes. On September 16, 2015, he called an NGO, Drishti, in Namchi, and narrated the story of the boy.
Mr. Passang Tshering Bhutia, General Secretary of Drishti, with the help of a few other officials in Namchi and Gangtok, rescued Vansh on September 16, 2015. Vansh was brought to Manjusha, a short-stay home run by Drishti for temporary shelter.

On being rescued, Vansh told Mr. Bhutia: “I told them (his ‘foster’ parents) repeatedly that my house is in Modinagar but they used to hit me whenever I said this. So I stopped asking them to drop me back home.”
Mr. Bhutia used Google to locate Modinagar in the Gaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. He also showed a picture of the Modi temple to Vansh to confirm that this indeed was his hometown. Vansh recognized the temple. Now that they were sure that he was from the Gaziabad area, Mr. Bhutia contacted the police there.
However, Vansh’s last name got written down as Gujrati instead of Gujjar, which led the police to search for Gujrati families in Modinagar.

After eight days, when nothing remarkable happened, Mr. Bhutia searched for the number of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Modinagar Mr. Deepak Sharma, and called him.

Without wasting a minute, SHO Sharma asked Mr. Bhutia to send him the kid’s picture on Whatsapp and also asked Vansh for some landmarks close to his house.

Vansh told them that his house was located near a flour mill and there was a shop which had lots of big speakers nearby. The SHO also figured out that Vansh might be a Gujjar and not Gujrati, as most of the people in Modinagar belonged to the Gujjar community. With all this information, finally, the police were able to trace Vansh’s father on October 1, 2015. Once again, Mr. Gujjar’s photograph was also shared through Whatsapp with Mr. Bhutia so that he could show it to Vansh for identification.

Vansh’s father, Mr. Babli Gujjar, and his uncle Mr. Lalit Kumar, reached Namchi on October 6, 2015 and all the formalities of reuniting the father and son were done by the Child Welfare Committee there.

On October 8, 2015, just thirteen days before Vansh’s 11th birthday, his father took him home in a train again.

“I can’t thank Mr. Bhutia and Drishti enough! I had lost all hopes of getting my child back. It’s like a miracle and they are like angels for me,” says Mr. Babli Gujjar.

NEW DELHI: The Prime Minister's Office has acted on the letter of Abhinav, an eight-year-old boy from Bengaluru who had petitioned PM Narendra Modi about an 'incomplete flyover' leading to traffic jams in his city.

The PMO has forwarded Abhinav's letter for appropriate action and has intimated him about the move.

The Class III student, takes 45 minutes to commute a distance of 3km from his home to the National Public School in Yeshwanthpur. His family stays in Doddabommasandra, Vidyaranyapura.

Abhinav's letter said an under-construction flyover over a railway crossing on the Outer Ring Road, near Goraguntepalya junction, was causing traffic pileups.

It took an eight-year-old's letter to the PMO to put the spotlight on a delayed project that has been causing much hardship to the public. Often civil projects languish for years due to tussles between departments and jurisdictional issues. It's time projects meant to benefit people aren't sacrificed over such ego clashes and sanctions are expedited. The boy's letter also shows that it's never too early or never too late to make a case for public good. Hopefully, Bengalureans will learn some lessons on taking up initiatives from this young citizen. Also, one hopes the PMO's response will not end up as mere lip service and prod the warring agencies to arrive at a solution.

சென்னை பல்லாவரம் அருகே இளம்பெண்ணை பாலியல் பலாத்காரம் முயன்ற கும்பலுடன் நடத்திய போராட்டத்தில் ஜான்சன் (20) என்ற இளைஞர் குத்திக் கொல்லப்பட்டார்.


சம்பவம் குறித்து ரயில்வே போலீஸார் கூறியது:


மறைமலைநகர் பாபா கோயில் தெருவைச் சேர்ந்தவர் ஜான்சன் (20). தினக்கூலியான இவர் பெயின்டிங் வேலை செய்து வந்தார்.


இந்நிலையில், இவர் கடந்த திங்கள்கிழமை இரவு மறைமலை நகர் செல்வதற்கான ரயிலை பிடிப்பதற்காக பல்லாவரம் ரயில் நிலையம் மேம்பாலம் கீழே உள்ள தண்டவாளத்தை கடக்க முயன்றிருக்கிறார். அப்போது ஒரு இளம் பெண்ணின் அபயக் குரல் கேட்டிருக்கிறது.


குழந்தைக்கு தாய்ப்பால் புகட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்த அந்த இளம்பெண்ணை நான்கு பேர் கொண்ட கும்பல் ஒன்று கையை பிடித்து இழுத்து தகராறு செய்து கொண்டிருந்ததை கவனித்திருக்கிறார். இதையடுத்து, ஜான்சன் உடனடியாக அப்பெண்ணுக்கு உதவி செய்துள்ளார்.


கும்பலில் இருந்த கார்த்திக் என்ற நபரை ஜான்சன் முகத்தில் தாக்கியிருக்கிறார். இதனால் கார்த்திக்கின் பிடியில் இருந்து விடுபட்ட இளம்பெண் தனது குழந்தையை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு சம்பவ இடத்திலிருந்து தப்பியிருக்கிறார்.


அந்தப் பெண் அங்கிருந்து தப்பிச் சென்ற பிறகு கார்த்திக் என்பவர் கத்தியால் ஜான்சனை குத்தியுள்ளார். பின்னர் மற்ற மூவரும் இணைந்து கொண்டு ஜான்சனை சரமாரியாக தாக்கியுள்ளனர். ரத்த வெள்ளத்தில் சரிந்த ஜான்சனை கார்த்திக்கும் அவரது சகாக்களும் அருகிலிருந்த புதரில் வீசிச் சென்றுள்ளனர்.


இச்சம்பவம் இரவு 9 மணியளவில் நடந்துள்ளது. ஆனால், இளைஞர் ஒருவர் புதரில் கிடப்பதாக வெகு நேரம் கழித்தே எங்களுக்கு பொதுமக்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.
போதிய வெளிச்சமின்மையால் பொதுமக்கள் பார்வையில் ஜான்சன் பட்டிருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை எனக் கருதுகிறோம்" என்றார்.


மேலும், இச்சம்பவம் தொடர்பாக கார்த்திக், சதீஷ், 'நொண்டி' சுள்ளான் இவர்களுடன் மற்றுமொருவர் என நாலவரை தேடி வருவதாக போலீஸார் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.


இச்சம்பவத்துக்கு முன்னதாக பொழிச்சலூர் செல்வதற்காக பல்லாவரம் ரயில் நிலையம் வந்திறங்கிய ராமமூர்த்தி (25) என்ற இளைஞரிடம் இருந்து ரூ.5000 பணத்தையும் செல்போனையும் இவர்கள் நால்வர் திருடியிருக்கின்றனர் என போலீஸார் தெரிவித்தனர்.

Head of a primary school's management committee, Gopal Patel has made a pitch to sell his organs in order to collect funds to build a dilapidated compound wall. This offer succeeds his repeated representations to the State Government which always came to rest at "lack of funds".

The school is located in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat. Patel made the offer to sell his eyes and kidney on social media on Tuesday night. His desperate attempt at collecting funds comes after making 28 representations to the government. "Since September 2013, I have made 28 representations to officials to rebuild the wall. But the only reply I got was that there were no funds. They asked me to arrange for money from the funds of MLAs or the MP," said Patel.

All non-academic affairs of educational institutions fall under the government initiative of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA). However, Patel's continuous efforts fell on deaf ears. He recounted a few instances where stray dogs had attacked children. "There have been two incidents of strays mauling students in Vadodara. We don't want the same to happen here," he said.Patel has demanded Rs 6 lakhs in exchange for his organs for a complete refurbishing of the compound wall.

"I want to do this for the education of the children of my village. Few are interested in schooling and parents at times do not even bother to collect scholarships," said Patel. After Patel's extreme request went public, the district primary education officer Mahesh Prajapati confirmed that he had already sent his word to the state's SSA project engineer on October 5, asking the latter to treat Patel's case as a special one and appropriate the desired funds.(With inputs from the Times of India)

மதுரை அருகே திருநகரில் அரசு கிளை நூலகம் செயல்படுகிறது. இதில் 52 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முந் தைய பழைய புத்தகங்கள் முதல் சமீபத்தில் வெளியான சமையல் குறிப்புகள், ஐஏஎஸ்., ஐபிஎஸ் உள்ளிட்ட போட்டித் தேர்வுக்கான புத்தகங்கள்வரை மொத்தம் 58 ஆயிரம் புத்தகங்கள் உள்ளன. மதுரை சிம்மக்கல் மைய நூலகத் துக்கு அடுத்து, மாவட்டத்தில் 2-வது பெரிய நூலகமான இந்த நூலகம் காலை 8 மணி முதல் இரவு 8 மணி வரை செயல்படுகிறது. நூலகத்தின் கீழ் தளத்தில் வாசகர்கள் படிப் பதற்கு காற்றோட்டமான இடவசதி உள்ளது. மேல்தளத்தில் போட் டித் தேர்வுக்குத் தயாராகும் மாண வர்கள் எந்த இடையூறும் இல் லாமல் அமர்ந்து படிப்பதற்கான அமைதியான சூழலில் படிப்பகமும் உள்ளது. மாணவர்கள், போட்டித் தேர்வுக்கு தயாராகும் இளை ஞர்கள், மூத்த குடிமக்கள் உட்பட 300-க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் தினமும் புத்தகங்கள், நாளிதழ்கள் படிக்க இங்கு வருகின்றனர்.

Even as several instances of religious intolerance have been sparking outrages and protests over the past few weeks in India, there are also signs that religious harmony exists.

A 45-year-old Muslim woman has been a devotee of goddess Durga for the last ten to fifteen years, to the extent, that she helped rebuild a ruined temple by collecting donations from the neighbourhood.

Sugra Bi, who lives in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, found the ruins of a Durga temple a few years ago and decided to get it fixed. A daily labourer who earns about Rs 4,000 per month, went around nearby localities, soliciting donations as small as Rs 2.


"I have been worshipping goddess Durga for a long time now. In the beginning I used to pray to the deity of Durga kept on a platform in our locality. But one night, the Goddess came in my dream and asked me to build a temple for her," Sughra told PTI.

A mother of three, Sugra asked for donations from the people to rebuild the temple. Later on, others joined and formed a society to build the temple.

According to a report in The New Indian Express, Sugra comes to the now built Sitla Mata Mandir and sings praises of goddess Durga during Navratri. She also keeps a fast on Ashtami, the eighth day of Navratri, Sitla Mata Mandir Samiti president Bherulal Barhat said, adding that the Hindus staying in the locality are all praise for her zeal and devotion towards the deity.

Sughra's husband Ismail Khan, who works as a welder, says he too raised money for building the temple. "I raised a total donation of Rs 27,000 for constructing the temple. The local MLA too donated Rs 1 lakh for the temple in which the idol of Goddess was consecrated three years ago," Khan said.

A 15-year-old US girl was crowned "America's Top Young Scientist" for producing an innovative prototype to help developing countries tap energy from ocean currents, a contest which had five Indian-American teens among the finalists.

Hannah Herbst was named winner of the 2015 Discovery Education 3M young scientist challenge for creating a prototype that seeks to offer a stable power of source to developing countries by using untapped energy from ocean currents, local media reported.

The award includes USD 25,000 and a student adventure trip to a destination such as Costa Rica. Ms Herbst, a ninth grader from Florida Atlantic University High School, competed alongside nine other middle school finalists on Tuesday during a live competition at the 3M Innovation Centre in St Paul, Minnesota.Ms Herbst said the idea for this innovation dawned upon her during conversations with a nine-year-old friend who lives in Ethiopia in northwest Africa, where infrequent and unstable power supply poses a major challenge, according to the local media.

Among the 10 finalists were five Indian-American - Raghav Ganesh, Krishna Shetty, Sanjana Shah, Iris Gupta and Amulya Garimella. The finalists are judged on their scientific problem solving, innovation and ingenuity, and communication skills.Last year, Indian-American Sahil Doshi, a ninth grader from Pittsburg, had won the competition for his innovative design of an eco-friendly device that seeks to reduce carbon footprint while offering power for household usage.

The November issue of National Geographic Magazine features a moving photograph of chimpanzees watching the burial of one of their own. Since it was published, the picture and story have gone viral, turning up on websites and TV shows and in newspapers around the world. For readers who'd like to know more, here's what I learned as I interviewed the photographer, Monica Szczupider.

On September 23, 2008, Dorothy, a female chimpanzee in her late 40s, died of congestive heart failure. A maternal and beloved figure, Dorothy spent eight years at Cameroon's Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, which houses and rehabilitates chimps victimized by habitat loss and the illegal African bushmeat trade.

After a hunter killed her mother, Dorothy was sold as a "mascot" to an amusement park in Cameroon. For the next 25 years, she was tethered to the ground by a chain around her neck, taunted, teased, and taught to drink beer and smoke cigarettes for sport. In May 2000, Dorothy--obese from poor diet and lack of exercise--was rescued and relocated along with ten other primates. As her health improved, her deep kindness surfaced. She mothered an orphaned chimp named Bouboule and became a close friend to many others, including Jacky, the group's alpha male, and Nama, another amusement-park refugee.

Szczupider, who had been a volunteer at the center, told me: "Her presence, and loss, was palpable, and resonated throughout the group. The management at Sanaga-Yong opted to let Dorothy's chimpanzee family witness her burial, so that perhaps they would understand, in their own capacity, that Dorothy would not return. Some chimps displayed aggression while others barked in frustration, but perhaps the most stunning reaction was a recurring, almost tangible silence. If one knows chimpanzees, then one knows that [they] are not [usually] silent creatures."

The Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center was founded in 1999 by veterinarian Sheri Speede (pictured at right, cradling Dorothy's head; at left is center employee Assou Felix). Operated by IDA-Africa, an NGO, it's home to 62 chimps who reside in spacious, forested enclosures.

Szczupider had submitted the photograph to "Your Shot," a magazine feature that encourages readers to send in pictures they have taken. The best are published on the website and in the magazine.

Susan Welchman, the Geographic photo editor who sifts through reader-contributed shots looking for winners, was drawn to the candor of the image. "It caught my eye because you just don't see that much emotion--human emotion--with animals," she says. "It couldn't have been posed or faked; there's no way to make an animal look or act like that. It's just so real and true, so pure."

பரபரவெனப் பற்றிக்கொண்ட விவகாரம், முக்கியக் குற்றவாளி ஈகிள் ராஜன் கைது வரை நீண்டது. அவருடைய டைரியில் தந்தங்களுக்கு ஆசைப்படும் இந்தியத் தொழிலதிபர்களின் பெயர்கள் நீள்கின்றன. தினம் தினம் யானை வேட்டைக் கொடூரம் தலைப்புச் செய்தியாக்கப்பட, கேரள எதிர்க்கட்சிகள் விவகாரத்தைக் கையில் எடுக்க, தற்போது யானை வேட்டைக்கு சி.பி.ஐ விசாரணை கோரியிருக்கிறார் முதலமைச்சர் உம்மன் சாண்டி. கேரளாவில் நடக்கும் இத்தனை களேபரங்களுக்கும் காரணம்... ஒரு தமிழ்ப் பெண் அதிகாரி... உமா... திருவனந்தபுரம் டி.எஃப்.ஓ. பொட்டுத் தூக்கம் இல்லாமல், இரண்டு நாட்கள் இவர் மேற்கொண்ட தொடர் சோதனையின் மூலம் யானை வேட்டைக் கும்பலின் ஆணிவேரையே காலிசெய்தவர். கொலை மிரட்டல், பொய் வழக்குகள் என இப்போது மாஃபியா கும்பல் இவரை அச்சுறுத்தினாலும், அசராமல் காட்டுக்குள் வலம்வருகிறார் உமா.

கேரளாவில் யானை வேட்டையாடுவதில், அய்யக்கர மட்டம் வாசு என்பவன் கில்லாடி. ஒரே தோட்டாவில் யானையின் உயிரை காவு வாங்குபவன். 'கேரள வீரப்பன்’ என்றே இவனை அழைக்கிறார்கள். மும்பையில் இருந்து ரயிலில் இவன் வரும் தகவல் கேள்விப்பட்டு வனத் துறை அதிகாரிகள் ரயில் நிலையத்தில் காத்திருக்க, மும்பையில் அவன் தூக்கு மாட்டி இறந்த தகவல் வந்திருக்கிறது.

'யானைகளை மனசாட்சி இல்லாமல் கொன்றவன், தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்ள வாய்ப்பே இல்லை. அவன் போலீஸிடம் சிக்கி உண்மைகளைப் பேசத் தொடங்கினால், பல பெரும்புள்ளிகள் சிக்குவார்கள் என்பதால் கொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கலாம்’ என்கிறார்கள் கேரள வனத் துறையினர். அந்த அளவுக்கு வட இந்திய, தென் இந்திய தொழிலதிபர்கள் பலர் யானை தந்த கலைப்பொருட்களின் வாடிக்கையாளர்கள். அவர்கள் உண்டாக்கும் டிமாண்ட் காரணமாக, ஆசியக் காடுகளில் இருக்கும் சுமார் 1,500 ஆண் யானைகளில் கடந்த சில வருடங்களில் 388 யானைகள் கொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என்கிறது தகவல். தந்த வேட்டை இதே வேகத்தில் நீடித்தால், ஆசிய யானைகள் இனமே அழிந்துவிடும் என அஞ்சுகிறார்கள் சுற்றுச்சூழல் ஆர்வலர்கள்!

President Barack Obama gave a shout-out to an Indian-American kid who recently made history by becoming the first person to earn a second Global Finalist award in the 2015 Google Science Fair.
“We’ve got some young Americans here tonight with that same kind of adventurous spirit,” he said addressing several hundred people including students, teachers, and NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden at the second White House Astronomy Night.

“When Pranav Sivakumar was six years old, he found an encyclopaedia about famous scientists lying around the house,” said Obama at the event on the mansion’s South Lawn Monday night.

“At least he thinks it was lying around there. Actually, his parents probably were setting it out — hoping he was going to run into it,” he said amid laughter.

“And he’s been fascinated with outer space ever since. For years, every Saturday morning, his parents drove him an hour to an astrophysics lab for ‘Ask-A-Scientist’ class.”

“And before long, he teamed up with researchers he met there to study the ‘gravitational lensing of quasars’,” he said. “That is not what I was thinking about at his age.”

“Pranav was a global finalist in the Google Science Fair — not once, but twice. So you know he’s going to do some important things. Give him a big round of applause,” said the president amid applause.

“And where’s Pranav? Because I was talking about him, and I didn’t — there you go. Give Pranav a big round of applause,” added Obama as he spotted Pranav to another round of applause.

“So these are examples of the extraordinary young people that we have here today,” he said citing a couple of other students.

“And we’ve got some outstanding teachers here today,” said Obama. “We need parents to leave encyclopaedias of famous scientists lying around the house, or help turn a bedroom into an ideas laboratory.

“We need to inspire more young people to ask about the stars, and begin that lifetime quest to become the next great scientist, or inventor, or engineer, or astronaut.”

Pranav, 15, was chosen out of only 10 students in his age category, 7 Americans, and 20 total students worldwide to make the finals of this year’s Google Science Fair.

His research addressed unresolvable image configurations of quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, allowing him to identify 109 new high probability quasar candidates.

Pranav has also won the Astronomical League’s National Young Astronomer Award, two National Semifinalist awards in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology, taking second place in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

After his speech, Obama spoke briefly with Ahmed Mohamed, the Texas student who was arrested and suspended from high school for bringing a homemade clock to class.

But the teenager, who embarked on a wide-ranging tour after his arrest made him famous, did not bring his clock along.

He was a photographer with a heart — always caring, compassionate and kind towards those in need. Now his family has chosen to honour his legacy in a unique way.

On a fateful day in August 2011, Nimesh Tanna, a 22-year-old photographer, boarded a crowded local train to make his way to a meeting in Mumbai. He never made it to the meeting or to his home that day. A pole, located dangerously close to the tracks, hit him hard the moment he put his head out of the train. Nimesh fell off the fast moving train and died on the spot.

“We were best friends since childhood. We went to the same school and attended the same college. We even worked together in the same company before he decided to pursue his passion for photography. We had decided to go for a movie that night but I didn’t know Nimesh would never return,” says Kintan Parekh, Nimesh’s friend, with a heavy heart.

It’s been four years and one can still hear the pain in Kintan’s voice. He recalls that day when he received a call from the railway authorities about a dead body lying on the side of the tracks near CST railway station.

“I was with his parents at the time they got the call. They were worried as Nimesh’s phone was not reachable. His father was a heart patient so I didn’t tell him exactly what had happened. I just told him that Nimesh had met with an accident but was fine. But when we reached the accident site, his father broke down. He couldn’t believe what had happened. It was such a tough thing to accept for everyone. We took the dead body home where hundreds of Nimesh’s friends were waiting along with his mother. He was a well-known boy and every one loved him,” recalls Kintan.

Coping with this loss was even more difficult for Mr. Pradeep Tanna and Mrs. Damyanti Tanna, as Nimesh was their only child.

The couple’s life came to a complete halt as they would sit the entire day in front of Nimesh’s photo, remembering him. Barely able to recover from this huge loss, Pradeep faced another setback when he lost the sweet shop he owned in Mulund because his partners cheated him in the business.

Kintan, who had always been there for the family during their tough times, yet again provided a helping hand. He advised Pradeep to start a new venture and he quit his own family business to support the Tanna family. Kintan, along with Pradeep, started a new sweet shop in Mulund.

The family was finally getting back on its feet and decided to honour their lost son in an extraordinary way.

“Nimesh was always socially inclined. He would help people in need, donate money, do volunteer work — he was very compassionate. His parents thought that starting an NGO under his name would be the perfect way to pay a tribute to their son,” says Kintan.

The Tanna couple registered the Shri Nimesh Tanna Charitable Trust (SNTCT) on January 26, 2013.

SNTCT was started with the goal of providing free tiffin service to the needy.

The Tannas started by making food in their small kitchen for about 30 people. SNTCT now provides lunch to about 100 underprivileged families in Mumbai every day.

It’s been over two years and the Tanna family has not skipped even a single day of their service. They have a new kitchen in a small space near their house in Mulund, where a staff of seven people makes healthy meals for the poor.

To make sure the tiffins reach the beneficiaries on time, the couple has partnered with the famous dabbawalas of Mumbai who do the delivery every day.

“Earlier, it was very challenging to deliver the tiffins on time. Sometimes, uncle and I would personally go to deliver the tiffins but this was not feasible every day since I had my own office then and uncle too had a shop to take care of,” says Kintan.

In time, SNTCT has also started working with a tribal community near Mumbai.

Since tribals are often disconnected from mainstream society and do not have the means to earn a proper livelihood, SNTCT provides them with ‘food kits.’

The kits contain necessary cooking ingredients like foodgrains, oil, sugar, flour, etc., for the entire month. The Trust distributes these rations to 50 adivasi families on the first Sunday of every month.

In addition, SNTCT also runs a ‘Kids Bank’ that supplies clothes, toys, books, cycles, etc., to needy children, and has a senior citizens’ initiative to supply medicines to the elderly.

SNTCT is run mainly with the money that the Tanna family earns from their sweet shop business in Mulund. However, the family also now gets support from other donors who are impressed with the work that they are doing.

“There couldn’t be a better tribute to Nimesh. He was a person with a golden heart and we are trying to keep him alive through the Trust,” says Kintan.

Last year, it broke through the Rs 5 lakh crore mark in market capitalisation, a fitting tribute to Ramadorai who was getting ready to retire as vice-chairman of the TCS board last October. MYSURU /BENGALURU: The grieving family members of a brain-dead woman from Kollegal donated her vital organs to patients in need after she succumbed to injuries she sustained in an accident at the BGS Apollo Hospital in Mysuru on Wednesday.


Geetha (52), a native of Rotti village in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajnagar district, suffered head injuries in an accident on Saturday. According to officials of the Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation, Geetha was rushed to the Primary Health Centre in Kollegal. She was shifted to BGS Apollo Hospital in Mysuru where she was declared brain dead.


A green corridor was created from BGS Apollo Hospital to the Bengaluru-Mysuru Road and from NICE Road to Apollo Hospitals on Bannerghatta Road in Bengaluru. Dr Govindaiah Yatheesh, medical superintendent, Apollo Hospitals, Bannergatta Road, said the organ reached the hospital around 4.25pm. “The recipient is a 58-year-old male. The transplant procedure has begun,” he said. The ambulance carrying the liver covered the distance in less than two hours.


Geetha’s kidneys have also been donated. While one of them was sent to Narayana Health in Bengaluru, the other has been kept at BGS Apollo Hospital in Mysuru.

For the 76 households in the tiny Indian village of Naro ka Kheda, northern Indian state Rajasthan, walking seven kilometres to charge their mobile phones was part of their weekly routine.

The village, situated 25kms away from Udaipur, had never had its own power supply. On 23 July 2015, the first house was electrified, thanks to a pilot project by a Durham University Business School student.

Prabh Singh, a 24-year-old who originally hails from Delhi, always dreamed of wearing a three-piece suit and working in an investment bank. Instead he hatched a plan to bring electricity to remote areas in his home country.

"I was talking with three classmates about the availability of solar panels on eBay and how people in Britain live off the grid during their casual fishing trips using affordable solar power," he explains. "It ended up being the inspiration of my project.

"I thought, if the people in the West can use solar power as a luxury item, then why can’t people in my home country, where around 75m people live without electricity, use it as a necessity item?"
And so "Project Kiran" - which means "ray" or "ray of light" in Sanskrit - was born.

"Despite being born and brought up in India, I had never spent a night in a village, let alone a night in a village without access to electricity," Singh says. "I worked with the villagers, lived with the villagers and sat on the floor in their dark houses eating with them to get a sense of the benefits 'Project Kiran' could bring."

The £7,000 cost of the pilot project was covered by collective crowdfunding from the villagers and North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), an autonomous society in the Indian government, who agreed to support to the initiative.

The project created an ‘easy to install and service’ electricity kit, ensuring the initiative was accessible to residents in remote locations and comprised of a solar panel, three light bulbs, a strip light and a charging socket for a mobile phone. It has also been able to set up a maintenance network bringing in revenue, which Singh says enables the village to add around 50,000INR (£500) to their local economy.

Now, Singh wants to take his ray of light to other villages, and hopes to turn his project into a profit making business, aimed at encouraging rural entrepreneurship.

"I am in talks with an Indian central government agency to replicate the same project in 50 remote Indian villages based on the similar kind of revenue and service mechanism.

"The happiness and the amazement which I saw in those villagers' eyes after they used electricity in their house for the first time is unmatched to any professional accomplishment that I could ever imagine achieving."

The small child that they brought together in this world is their most precious treasure, but what happens when one day this treasure is taken away from them without any warning?


Mr. Pradeep Tanna and Mrs. Damyanti Tanna are a couple who went through a similar phase. One unfortunate day they lost their 22-year-old son, Nimish Tanna, to an accident. They couldn’t believe life could be so unfair to them.

Their pain refused to subside and life began to lose meaning for them. As life became more difficult they decided that since they can’t enjoy their lives with the pain that was unleashed upon them, they better dedicate their lives to a noble cause. And there began Shri Nimesh Tanna Charitable Trust (SNTCT) on January 26, 2013.


The sole purpose of the SNTCT was to provide meals to those underprivileged people of old age who do not even have access to the basic necessities of life. This service goes on for 365 days a year in Mulund and nearby areas. They serve a complete meal to as many people as they can each day.

Soon support started coming in and they also started other activities such as collection of clothes and books for underprivileged kids, health checkup for elders and ensuring availability of medicines for them. Recently they started distributing free ration to 50 Adivasi families on the first Sunday of every month.

n an interview Mrs. Damyanti Tanna shared that her son used to love food made by her, so whenever she cooks food for the needy she makes it with the same love as she made it for her son and feels as if her son is enjoying the meal.

For parents, losing their kid is equivalent to losing their lives. Many surrender themselves to PTSD and depression. Even the thought of our parents having to live without us sends a shiver down our spine.

Yet this couple, Mr. Pradeep Tanna and Mrs. Damyanti Tanna have set an exemplary of example on giving a new purpose to their lives. It is such a brave thing to do. We are so proud of you, Ma’am and Sir.

Vindhya E Infomedia, a BPO in Bangalore, is known for it its quality of work. But what’s special about it? The organization was started with the vision of employing differently abled people, and has been doing so, very successfully, since the past 10 years now.

Pavithra Y S, a 21-year-old B.Com graduate was brainstorming ideas about doing something meaningful in her life, with her husband Ashok Giri who is an IT professional. “We just ended up choosing to start a for-profit enterprise that would also offer growth opportunities for the so-called ‘disabled’ people,” she says.

Pavithra uses the term ‘so-called’ because Vindhya E Infomedia, the social enterprise that was born as a result of that brainstorming session, has proved that the disabled are just differently enabled people who are completely capable of being a part of the productive work force.


Vindhya E Infomedia, located in the Rajajinagar Industrial Estate of Bangalore, is now in its 10th year of operations.







The company does Business Process Outsourcing for many industries such as micro finance, banking, insurance, IT and ITES where data is the key to making decisions. Turnaround time (TAT) is critical in choosing vendors, and in that respect, Vindhya is the BPO of choice in the banking and financial services industry.


A service provider to top notch companies like Schneider, SAP and many leading banks, it is known today for its quality.

“In fact, our company has brought down TATs drastically in this sector. And it is all because our differently-abled employees deliver their best. For them, this is important not just for their career advancement but more because they want the rest of their disabled community to be able to get the job opportunity that they have got. They work as if they are being appraised every moment,” says Pavithra.

So is there an optimum match between the skill sets of the differently abled and the BPO industry’s requirements?

“There are a couple of requirements, but in my opinion the most important one is ‘attitude’. All of them come with a ‘can do’ attitude. ‘Give us any work and we will deliver it’, they say. And they do,” explains Pavithra.

The hearing and speech impaired mostly do data processing. Training for the hearing impaired is conducted through sign language which is also the universal language used at Vindhya E Infomedia.

How Pavithra learnt the sign language makes for an interesting anecdote. In the early days of the company, two hearing impaired girls walked into the office for jobs. At that time, Pavithra did not know that such a thing as a sign language exists. ‘Give me a job and I’ll teach you the sign language,’ one of the girls told her.


Vindhya E Infomedia’s training manual for the 1,200 able and differently enabled employees is written in simple English with clear photos to illustrate processes that the employees need to be trained in. Candidates who apply are expected to have basic English comprehension and computer usage skills.

They are then trained to use specific software and communicate in English. While there is a formal training module, informal tools such as reading English language newspapers, and conversing between employees in English also helps.


Although Vindhya was started with the aim of creating a 100 per cent production team of differently abled, it has employed the abled too, in order to bring in other skills sets into the company. This, in fact, has spurred the differently enabled to perform even better because of the healthy competition at workplace. The abled employees, many of them women, work on client sites.

“Our work ethic is hard-core professional. While we nurture the differently abled, no concessions are given for non-performance. Our work force is very disciplined,” says Pavithra.

Recruitment is a multi-pronged process. Initially, they approached NGOs that trained the differently abled. But now they have also set up camps in Tier II cities to create awareness about job opportunities and to recruit from there.

In addition to this, they do campus recruitment as well. Even so, what works best is word-of-mouth because ‘referrals are important in creating trust between employer and employee’, says Pavithra.


Setting up Vindhya E Infomedia was Pavithra’s first work experience and Ashok Giri, her husband, mentored her for the first two years after which he joined the company as CEO and Director. Like any other startup, they operated on a shoe-string budget. Pavithra remembers how, soon after they started, they were to celebrate their daughter’s first birthday. But with the already stretched budget, they could not make any grand plans. When their employees got to know about this, they pooled in and bought a cake, some snacks, and held an impromptu celebration.


Thus the tradition of having a monthly birthday celebration of the employees started.

Initially, they were also low on cash and for some months it was difficult to pay salaries. But the employees were so thrilled to have a job that they were willing to forgo this, provided food and accommodation were taken care of. Thus they rented out a house where employees could share accommodation and three meals were provided at the work place every day.


It is heartening that many of the employees from the initial batch have moved out of shared accommodation, found spouses within the company and bought homes of their own.

Pavithra narrates the story of how she found her front office receptionist when one of her vendors mentioned a guy who had lost both his arms in an accident. She was not sure if she could employ him, but his ‘can do’ attitude was so infectious that she hired him as a receptionist. With some training in spoken English he handled his job well and his people skills were so good that he was moved to the HR department and is now the Assistant Manager, HR.

“We named our company Vindhya because we believed that like the mountain range that continues to grow, our company too would grow, not just in business but also in human potential. We could see that happening from Day 1 – people walked into our company and their lives changed. As did ours as we kept learning from each other,” sums up Pavithra.

“When we did client presentations, people often wondered if we could deliver the goods. Time and again Vindhya E Infomedia has proved itself to be the best in its class. Our work culture of integrating the specially enabled with the able has worked well for us and our clients, who have solidly supported us through our decade of existence. To this day my husband and I try to recollect how our conversation of starting Vindhya started and neither of us remembers it. I believe this enterprise was just meant to be.”

18-Year-Old Indian From Dubai Becomes World's Youngest Chartered Accountant

DUBAI: An 18-year-old Indian boy in the UAE has become the youngest affiliate with a global body for professional accountants, according to a media report.

A graduate from the Indian High School, Dubai, Ramkumar Raman has to complete three years of qualified work experience in order to attain the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) membership, the Khaleej Times reported.

Mr Raman has been recognised by officials in the ACCA Middle East as the youngest ACCA affiliate ever registered among all other candidates, affiliates and members.

"As of now, Raman holds the record for the youngest ACCA affiliate in our records," Herriot Fitgerald, the ACCA Academic Advisor Middle East was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

ACCA candidates generally start their qualification journey at the age of 18.

The examinations are split into three levels namely - The Knowledge module, Skills module and the Professional module totally making 14 papers. These papers are attempted over a span of three years.

"I began coaching for examinations in September 2012 and I wrote the final exam in June 2015," Mr Raman said.

"As far as my earlier previous exams are concerned, I don't think I performed that well. When it comes to marks, I scored a 8.6 CGPA in grade 10 and an 87 per cent in 12th," said Mr Raman.

Founded in 1904, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants is the global professional accounting body offering the Chartered Certified Accountant qualification.
