Experiences with Maha Periyava: "Your Promotion orders will be Waiting!"

Once, when I was the Magistrate of Ramanathapuram District, I had travelled to Madras by car. On my way back, I went to have a darshan of the Jagadguru, the Paramacharya of Kanchi, Who was then camping at a place 15 kms from Kanchipuram. I was anxious to return to Madras the same night after meeting Him.

At that time, Dr. T. N. Ramachandran, Assistant Director, Department of Archaeology, was projecting some slides using a Magic Lantern. These were slides showing images of two birds perched on a tree: one relishing the fruit --- one, savouring the sweetness and now, grimacing at the sourness --- and the other observing this with detachment.

Perhaps, my face gave away my anxiety to reach Madras by 10 o’clock, perceiving which the Acharya told me,

“I know you have to reach Madras tonight. But aren’t you reminded of an Upanishadic mantra on seeing these slides?”

Saying thus, He recited the mantra:
Dvaa suparnau sayujau sakhaayau samaanam vruksham parishasva jaate|
Tayoranyah pippalam svaaddhati anashnan anyo-abhachaakashithi||

(Two birds are perched on a tree. While one tastes the fruits, the other watches on. The Supreme Lord, Parameshvara, dwelling within all physical forms, experiences the fruits of karma as joy and sorrow. At the same time, as Ishvara, He remains untouched by cause and effect.)

I said I was familiar with it.
“Watching these slides will add clarity to your religious discourses. That’s why I made you stay back. Do you see now? Here, take this prasadam,” saying so, He sent for a coconut, smeared turmeric over it and bestowed upon me the poornaphala prasadam. Prostrating before Him, I received it.

Then, I told Him, “I should have been promoted as a District Judge by now. Since a retired judge was given a three-month extension by the Disciplinary Tribunal, my promotion has been withheld.”

Even before I could finish saying this, the Acharya said,

“When you now return to Devakottai, your promotion orders will be waiting!”

Having reassured me with His Abhayahastaa, He bid me farewell.

On my return to Devakkottai, I received promotion orders for the post of District and Sessions Judge!

I have heard many devotees recount to me instances of the Paramacharya’s boundless Grace showering unexpected blessings on them.

Rishinaam punaraadhyaanaam vaachamarthoranudhaavathi|

This brings to mind Bhavabhuti’s verse which says that, "When a SEER speaks, Meanings run after His words! Whatever a Seer utters, will happen!"

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Guru's gracious look

"The astrologers say that Guru's look has not taken place yet, so the hurdles in the way of getting my daughter married continue to delay it", a worried devotee supplicated to Sri Maha Periyava.
The disciple of SrIMatham named Tediyur Vanchi Ayyar was standing nearby. He said immediately with love and consolation, "What you say is wrong. Guru-Kataksham has indeed taken place. You have come to the sannidhi --presence of Periyava, who is the Pratyaksha Guru (visible Guru). So, there will not be any more hurdles. The marriage will be celebrated soon."

There were only fifteen more days in the month of Avani (August-September). How could the marriage take place soon before the end of Avani? The months of Purattasi, Aippasi, Karthigai and Margazhi would come next, so the marriage talks could be started again only after this period... Thoughts of the bride's father ran in this manner.

Periyava's anugraha vishesham (speciality of divine grant), had been expressed in the words of Vanchi Ayyar. In a sudden turn, the betrothal took place in a day or two and the Mangalya Dharanam (wearing the sacred pendant in marriage), too was celebrated immediately thereafter.
The devotee who came to have Periyava’s darshan with the newly-wed couple, prostrated flat to Sri Maha Periyava, expressing boundless happiness.

"I did not have time to come personally and inform Periyava about the betrothal; so, I seek pardon. Owing to the Guru Kataksham, I had the bridegroom from a good family and this soon..."
Raising His hand, Sri Maha Periyava blessed them.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: “Ocean of compassion”

Shri Mahaperiyava, who is the avatar of Shri Adi Shankara, due to His kindness, to bless all the people, like a Sugabrahma Rishi Saint, took avatar as Shri Shri Shri Maha Periyava, walked this earth and blessed us. Periyava had considered it His primary goal to protect and save the Vedas and also to help the learned ones, who recite Vedas and also requesting everyone to contribute to this noble cause.

Periyava had special kindness for kids who learn Vedas, because those kids leave their near and dear ones and lead a strict and tough lifestyle. If Periyava used to come to know of any devotee who had helped in getting a tasty meal for these kids, those devotees would get special blessings. Periyava would be more delighted to see devotees offering treats like murukku, seedai and somasi to those kids rather than offering something to SriMatham.

But on that particular day, Periyava was upset with those kids.

Periyava was camping at Thiruvanaikaval during those days. Kumbabishekam was being performed in a temple that was between Thanjavur and Trichy and Periyava had instructed the students at Thiruvanaikaval Veda Patasala to go there for Veda recital. The kids used to accompany Periyava daily. They used to talk among themselves and walk behind Him.

On that day, as Periyava was walking, the kids were walking and following Him as usual. Suddenly
He stopped, turned back and looked at the kids with a red face. It looked as though somebody had complained about the kids to Periyava. Periyava started to talk harshly. All the devotees were surprised to hear from Periyava. They were confused as to why Periyava was using those harsh words on these kids. They might have thought that there should be some reason behind those harsh words. The kids also would not have expected that from Periyava and would have felt bad.
That night, Periyava was sitting with His usual calmness. The Kumbabishekam prasadam from the temple was being brought to Him. Periyava enquired, “Did the Veda Patasala kids come?” They answered that the kids had come but were not their usual self. They also said that the kids did not eat properly. Periyava had enquired about the kids Himself, before they could tell what had happened that day.

On hearing this, Periyava immediately asked the kids to be brought there. The kids had already slept, but since it was Periyava’s request, they woke all the kids who were sleeping and brought them before Periyava.

Everyone there were surprised to see the events that happened after that. Periyava asked the kids to forget whatever He had told them that morning. He also said that none of the things that He had said in the morning will occur. He blessed all the kids that they will be happy and prosperous throughout their entire life. It is true that all those kids had lived a happy and peaceful life. This is also proved by Brahmashree Musiri Deekshithar, who was one of the kids.

பெரியவா சரணம் !!

"எங் குழந்தை பேச ஆரம்பிச்சிடுச்சுங்க. எங்குழந்தை பேச ஆரம்பிச்சிடுச்சுங்க… ஒண்ணரை வருஷமா பேசாம இருந்த கொழந்தை இப்ப பேசுது. இவளோட மழலை மொழியை இப்பதான் கேக்கறேன்.’’பூரித்த தம்பதிகள்.

1991-ஆம் வருடம்… மகா பெரியவா முதுமைக் காலத்தில் இருந்தார். பக்தர்களுக்கு அதிக தரிசனம் அப்போது இல்லை.

அன்றைய தினம் விசேஷமாக மகா பெரியவா பக்தர்களுக்கு தரிசனம் தந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். ரொம்ப நாள் கழித்துப் பெரியவா தரிசனம்தரப் போகிறார் என்பதற்காக அன்றைய தினம் மகா பெரியவாளைத் தரிசிக்க எண்ணற்ற பக்தர்கள் வந்திருந்தனர். குழந்தைகளில் இருந்துமுதியோர் வரை எல்லா தரப்பினரும்ஸ்ரீமடத்தில்திரண்டிருந்தனர்
.
அன்றைய தினமும் அப்படித்தான். மகா பெரியவாளைத் தரிசிக்கக் கூடி இருந்த பக்தர்களுள் பலரது முகத்தில் ஏதோ எதிர்பார்ப்புகள்.வேண்டுதல்கள்.

அவரவர்கள் தங்களால் இயன்ற காணிக்கைகளைக் குருவுக்கு சமர்ப்பிக்க வேண்டும் என்று வாங்கிக் கொண்டு வந்திருந்தார்கள்.அவற்றில் பழங்கள், உலர்வகை பழங்கள், முந்திரி, வில்வ மற்றும் துளசி மாலைகளும் அடங்கும்.

பக்தர்களோடு பக்தராக அங்கே கலந்து ஓர் ஓரமாக நின்று கொண்டிருந்தனர், நாராயணன் – வைதேகி தம்பதியர். சென்னையில்வசிப்பவர்கள். நாராயணன் உத்தியோகஸ்தர்.

நாராயணனது இடுப்பில் அவர்களது ஒண்ணரை வயது பெண் குழந்தை நிதர்சனா அப்பாவின் கழுத்தைக் கட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தது.விழிகளை உருட்டி உருட்டி அங்குமிங்கும் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தாள். புதுப் புது மனிதர்களே எங்கும் தென்பட்டதால், குழந்தையின்முகத்தில் ஒரு மிரட்சி தெரிந்தது.

‘மகா பெரியவா அருகே செல்ல வேண்டும்… அந்த மகானிடம் தங்களது பிரார்த்தனையைச் சொல்ல வேண்டும்’ என்பது இந்தத்தம்பதியர்களின் விருப்பமாக இருந்தது. ஆனால், அன்றைக்குக் கூடி இருந்த பக்தர்கள் கூட்டத்தில் இவர்களால் ஒரு இஞ்ச் கூட முன்னேறிச்செல்ல முடியாத சூழ்நிலை.

எனவே, தாங்கள் இருந்த இடத்தில் இருந்தபடியே மகா பெரியவாளின் திருமுக தரிசனத்தை எம்பி எம்பிப் பார்த்து கன்னத்தில் போட்டபடிஇருந்தனர்.

‘‘ஏங்க, கூட்டம் இவ்ளோ இருக்கே… நிதர்சனாவைப் பெரியவாகிட்ட கூட்டிண்டு போய் காட்ட முடியுமாங்க? அந்த தெய்வத்தின்அனுக்ரஹப் பார்வை இவ மேல் திரும்புமாங்க?’’ என்று வைதேகி, நாராயணனைப் பார்த்து ஏக்கத்துடன் கேட்டாள்.

‘‘இன்னிக்கு அந்த மகானோட அனுக்ரஹம் கிடைக்கணும்னு நமக்கு விதி இருந்தா கிடைக்கும். பார்ப்போம், குருவோட பார்வை நம்ம மேலதிரும்பறதானு…’’ என்று மகா பெரியவாளையே வைத்த கண் வாங்காமல் பார்த்தபடி உருக்கத்துடன் சொன்னார் நாராயணன்.

வந்திருந்த பக்தர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் அவரவர்களது பிரார்த்தனையை மகானிடம் சென்று சொல்ல வேண்டும்… இதற்கு சாதகமாகஒரு அருளாசி அவரிடம் இருந்து பெற வேண்டும் என்று இருந்ததே தவிர, தரிசனத்துக்காகக்காத்திருக்கும்குழந்தைகளுக்கோ, பெரியோர்களுக்கோ ஒரு முன்னுரிமை கொடுத்து அவர்களை முதலில் அனுப்ப வேண்டும் என்று யாருக்கும் கவலை இல்லை.அப்படிப்பட்ட எண்ணமும் இல்லை.

மகானின் சந்நிதி முன்னாலும், எல்லோரும் சுய நலத்துடன் காணப்பட்டார்கள்.
மகா பெரியவா அருகே வரும் பக்தகோடிகளை அவரது சிஷ்யர்கள் கட்டுப்படுத்தி, அனுப்பிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். வழக்கம்போல் மகாபெரியவா அங்கே திரண்டிருந்த பக்தகோடிகளைத் தன் அனுக்ரஹப் பார்வையால் ஒரு முறை அலசினார்.

தன்னைத் தரிசிக்க ஆத்மார்த்தமாக வந்திருக்கும் நாராயணன் – வைதேகி தம்பதியருக்கு அன்றைய தினம் யோகம் அடித்தது.

அடுத்த விநாடி ஒரு சிப்பந்தியை ஜாடை காட்டித் தன் அருகே அழைத்தார் மகா பெரியவா. குழந்தை நிதர்சனாவை இடுப்பில் சுமந்துகொண்டிருக்கும் நாராயணனை அடையாளம் காண்பித்து, ‘அவாளைக் கொஞ்சம் கிட்டக்கக் கூட்டிண்டு வா’ என்று சைகை செய்தார்மகான்.
அந்த சிப்பந்தி கூட்டத்தை விலக்கிக் கொண்டு நாலடி பாய்ச்சலில் ஓடிப் போய் நாராயணன் – வைதேகி தம்பதியரிடம் விஷயத்தைச்சொல்ல… அவர்கள் ஆனந்த அதிர்ச்சியில் திறந்த வாயை மூட மறந்தார்கள். ‘‘என்னது… மகா பெரியவா எங்களைக் கூப்பிடறாரா?’’

‘‘ஆமா… வாங்கோ, சீக்கிரம். உங்களுக்குத்தான் உத்தரவு ஆகி இருக்கு.’’

கணவன், மனைவி இருவரின் விழியோரங்களும் நெகிழ்வின் காரணமாக கண்ணீர் சொரிந்தன.
குழந்தையை இடுப்பில் வைத்துக் கொண்டே இரு கரங்களையும் கூப்பிய வண்ணம் மகா பெரியவாளை வணங்கியபடியே நடந்தார்நாராயணன்.

‘‘வழி விடுங்கோ… வழி விடுங்கோ…’’ என்று உரக்கக் கூவிக் கொண்டே சிப்பந்தி முன்னால் செல்ல… பின்னால் நாராயணனும்வைதேகியும் நடந்தனர்.

மகா பெரியவா அருகே இவர்களைக் கூட்டிக் கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்திய சிப்பந்தி, பெரியவாளுக்குத் தகவல் தெரிவித்தார்.

கலியுக தெய்வத்தின் பார்வை தம்பதியின் மேல் விழுந்தது. ‘‘இடுப்புல வெச்சிண்டு இருக்காளே… அது அவாளோட குழந்தையானு கேளு…’’ – தன் பக்கத்தில் இருந்த சிப்பந்திக்கு பெரியவா உத்தரவு!

இந்தக் கேள்வி அப்படியே ஓவர் டூ தம்பதியர்.

வந்த பிரார்த்தனையே அதுதானே!

குழந்தையை முன்னிறுத்தித்தானே இன்றைக்கு மகா பெரியவாளைத் தரிசிக்க வந்திருக்கிறார்கள் இவர்கள்!

‘‘இவ எங்க கொழந்தைதான் பெரியவா…’’ – நாராயணன் நெக்குருகச் சொன்னார். அதை ஆமோதிப்பதுபோல் வைதேகியும் கண்கள்கலங்க… பெரியவாளையும் நிதர்சனாவையும் மாறி மாறிப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தாள்.

குழந்தையைப் பார்த்துப் பெரியவா புன்னகைத்தார்.

குழந்தையும் பதிலுக்குப் புன்னகைத்தது.

அதன்பின் மகா பெரியவா தனக்கு அருகில் இருந்த ஒரு மூங்கில் தட்டில் இருந்து சிறிது உலர் திராட்சைகளை அள்ளி, சிப்பந்தியிடம்கொடுத்தார். ‘‘அந்தக் கொழந்தைகிட்ட கொடு.’’
திராட்சை இடம் மாறியது.

தன் பிஞ்சுக் கைகளை நீட்டியபடி அத்தனை திராட்சைகளையும் இரண்டு உள்ளங்கைகளுக்குள் அடக்க முற்பட்டது குழந்தை. அம்மாவும்இதற்கு உதவினார். மகா பெரியவா திருச்சந்நிதியிலேயே அந்த திராட்சைகளில் இருந்து இரண்டை எடுத்துத் தன் வாயில் போட்டுக்கொண்டது குழந்தை.

நாராயணனுக்கும் வைதேகிக்கும் கண்கள் குளமாயின என்று சொன்னால், அது சாதாரணம்.
இருவரும் குழந்தையை வைத்துக் கொண்டு தேம்புகிறார்கள்.

வந்த கார்யம் முடிந்து விட்டது. அந்தப் பரப்பிரம்மம் தன் வலக் கையை உயர்த்தி, இவர்களுக்கு விடை கொடுத்தது.

இத்தனை பக்தகோடிகள் கூடி இருக்கிற இடத்தில், மிகவும் ஆத்மார்த்தமாக வந்திருக்கிற ஒரு ஜோடியைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்துத் தன் அருகேவரவழைத்து அவர்களுக்குத் தேவையானதைக் கொடுத்து விட்டார் மகா பெரியவா.

அடுத்து, மகானது பார்வை கூட்டத்தைத் துழாவியது.

அடுத்த அதிர்ஷ்டம் யாருக்கோ?!

காஞ்சி ஸ்ரீமடத்தை விட்டு வெளியே வந்தார்கள் நாராயணனும் வைதேகியும்! இன்னமும் இடுப்பிலேயே இருந்தாள் நிதர்சனா! இதுவரைஅநேகமாக ஏழெட்டு திராட்சையை சாப்பிட்டிருப்பாள். மகா பெரியவா பிரசாதம் இன்னமும் அவள் கையில் இருந்தது.

காஞ்சிபுரம் பஸ் ஸ்டாண்ட் வந்து சென்னைக்குச் செல்லும் பஸ்ஸில் ஏறினார்கள் மூவரும்.

மிதமான கூட்டத்தோடு பஸ் புறப்பட்டது. மூவர் அமரக் கூடிய ஒரு இருக்கையில் ஜன்னல் ஓரமாக நிதர்சனாவும், அவளுக்கு அருகில்நாராயணனும் வைதேகியும் அமர்ந்தார்கள்.
பஸ் புறப்பட்டு ஐந்து நிமிடம் ஆகி இருக்கும்.

திடீரென நாராயணனின் கன்னத்தையும், சற்று எம்பி வைதேகியின் கன்னத்தையும் தடவி, ‘‘அம்மாமா… அப்பாபா…’’ என்று குரல் உயர்த்திக்குழந்தை பேச ஆரம்பித்தபோது, தாயும் தகப்பனும் போட்ட விநோதக் கூச்சலில் ஒரு விநாடி அதிர்ந்து சடன் பிரேக் போட்டு பேருந்தைநிறுத்தினார் டிரைவர்.

‘என்ன பிரச்னையோ?’ என்று டிரைவர், தன் இருக்கையில் இருந்தே திரும்பிப் பார்க்க… கண்டக்டர் ஓடி வந்து, ‘‘என்னம்மா…’’ என்று கரிசனத்துடன் விசாரிக்க…

கண்களில் உடைப்பெடுத்துப் பெருகும் நீருடன் எல்லோரையும் பார்த்து வைதேகி சொன்னாள்: ‘‘எங் குழந்தை பேச . ஆரம்பிச்சிடுச்சுங்கஎங்குழந்தை பேச ஆரம்பிச்சிடுச்சுங்க… ஒண்ணரை வருஷமா பேசாம இருந்த கொழந்தை இப்ப பேசுது. இவளோட மழலை மொழியை இப்பதான் கேக்கறேன்.’’

பஸ்ஸில் இருந்த அத்தனை பேரும் எழுந்து வந்து குழந்தையின் கன்னம் தொட்டுக் குதூகலித்தனர்.

ஆம்! நிதர்சனா பிறந்தது முதல் தற்போது வரை (ஒண்ணரை வயது) எந்த ஒரு வார்த்தையும் பேசியதில்லை.

வேண்டாத தெய்வம் இல்லை. போகாத கோயில் இல்லை. செய்யாத பரிகாரம் இல்லை. ஆனால், அத்தனையும் தாண்டி, ஒரு கலியுகதெய்வம் தனக்கு பிக்ஷையாக வந்த திராட்சையைக் கொண்டே இவர்களின் பிரச்னையைத் தீர்த்து விட்டது.

குடும்பத்துக்கே பிரசாதமாக வந்த திராட்சை குழந்தை நிதர்சனாவுக்கு மட்டுமில்லை. நாராயணன் அவர் புரிந்து வரும் உத்தியோகத்தில்அடுத்தடுத்து நல்ல மாற்றங்கள். பிரமோஷன், சம்பள உயர்வு என்று எல்லாம் கிடைத்தன.

மகா பெரியவாளுக்கு சுமார் 97 வயது இருக்கும்போது நடந்த அற்புதங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: The 64th Nayanar

There was a bank director in France who was keen on having a darshan of Maha Periyava having heard a lot about him. Dr. Raghavan used to receive frequent phone calls from the bank director. He would ask if he could come and have a darshan of Periyava. Dr. Raghavan who was a Sanskrit professor in the Madras University would inform Periyava about the request. Even though he said, "He is very keen to have darshan of Periyava; he bothers me frequently", Periyava did not give his consent to meet him. Some years passed in this way.

Suddenly one day Dr. Raghavan received intimation that said, “I have arrived at Bombay. I shall come over to Madras and meet you. Please arrange for the darshan.”

At that time our Acharyas were staying in the Mylapore Sanskrit College. One evening Dr. Raghavan was waiting to have darshan of Maha Periyava. Periyava called him and inquired. When told about the Frenchman's proposed visit to Chennai, Periyava said, "Alright, bring him."

Before he sat for the upanyasam after the puja, Periyava called me andsaid, "If any European turns up, seat him on a chair, as he would not be able to sit on the floor. I shall see him after the upanyasam."

When the upanyasam was over and Periyava was about to get inside he asked, "Did anyone turn up?" "No one turned up", I replied. At that time a man wearing a dhoti and towel came to the front and prostrated to Periyava four times. (The sampradaya is to always prostrate to sannyasis four times.) Behind the man came Dr. Raghavan andSankaraNarayana Aiyer (professor of Philosophy at Mylapore Vivekananda College). Since that European came in dhoti and towel, I was misled. Periyava told me, "Ask him how did he knew about prostrating four times." The European said, "I did as everyone did here."

Periyava told me, "Bring only the Frenchman." I said, "I wouldn't understand the English he speaks. It would be better if Dr. Raghavan or SankaraNarayana Aiyer is present."

"The English you know would suffice. You bring him," quipped Periyava. Dr. Raghavan and SankaraNarayana Aiyer stood outside the thatti (a coconut leaf weaved sheet of cover).

The Frenchman who came inside and sat spoke: "I have been studying Vedanta for sometime now. Suddenly one day I felt that my entire body had gone numb, that I was residing outside the body, and my figure was extended from the earth to the sky. I also saw the Universe hanging from my body. It was very blissful at that time. There was no trace of sorrow. After this incident, nothing bothers my mind in my daily life. My wife is deceased. My son too is dead. These occasions did not create any ripple in my mind. I was always blissful.

"People in the bank think I am insane, looking at this mental state of mine. So I have an inherent fear that one day they might put me behind the bars of a hospital".

Periyava uttered cryptically with love beaming in his face and a strange kind of admiration at the Frenchman, "What is inside? And what is outside? Is not everything inside the four walls?"

This question created a big change in him. His eyes were seen brimming with tears as if he was one with the Universe represented by the Pontiff.

There was silence, not a leaf whispered...

Then he composed himself and then requested Periyava, "You should always be with me." Finally, he asked Periyava to give him some upadesham.

Periyava said, "Continue what you are doing now (meditation). I shall be with you till your attainment." He tore a piece of the vastram he was wearing then and gave it to the Frenchman with the words, "Keep this always with you as my prasadam." Such a great anugraha for him on that day. He took leave with immense happiness, having received the grace.

Coming outside, the Frenchman prostrated to Dr. Raghavan and said, "It was only because of you I got this much bhagyam."

Periyava went to bed after they were gone. After he retired, I asked him about a doubt in my mind.
Without replying anything to me, Periyava lapsed into sleep. He called me the next morning before he started his one hour japam. He asked me, "Do you know how many Nayanmars are there?"
I replied, "The Arupatthu Moover Utsavam is held (every year)! So, only sixty three."
"Go to the Kapaleeswarar temple, count and come back," he said. When I did it, I counted sixty seven. I told this to Maha Periyava.

"Who are those four people in excess?" he asked me.

I went back to the temple, inqured and came back. "One of them is the 'Appalum Adi Sarndharukku Adiyar!'" I said.

Periyava graced me with the knowledge, "Appal is those who are beyond desam and kaalam. Since the element of time is involved, it also refers to the Adiyars to be born hereafter also. This man is beyond desam. He has just four janmas left."

Though Periyava who was such a jnani is not among us now, He is always living in His figure of grace and giving us abhayam!

பெரியவா சரணம் !!

காஞ்சிப்பெரியவரின் சீடர் குமரேசன் கூறிய உண்மைச் சம்பவம் இது.
திருக்கோவிலூரைச் சேர்ந்த பெரியவரின் பக்தரான மணி, தன் மனைவியுடன் காஞ்சிபுரம் வந்திருந்தார். பெரியவரின் ஜென்ம நட்சத்திரமான அனுஷத்தன்று தவறாமல் விரதமிருந்து பூஜை செய்வது அவரது வழக்கம். முடிந்தால் அனுஷத்தன்று காஞ்சிப் பெரியவரை தரிசிக்கவும் செய்வார்.

மணிக்கு இரு குழந்தைகள். மூத்தவள் பெண். இளையவன் பையன். பெண்ணுக்குத் திருமணம் முடிந்து பிரசவத்திற்காக தாய் வீடு வந்திருந்தாள். பையன் படிப்பை முடித்து விட்டு, வேலைக்கு விண்ணப்பித்துக் காத்திருந்தான். இந்நிலையில் தான், மணி தம்பதி பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க வந்திருந்தனர். அன்று அனுஷம் என்பதால் மடத்தில் பெருங்கூட்டம் காத்திருந்தது. வீட்டில் நிறைமாத கர்ப்பிணி தனியாக இருக்கிறாளே என்ற எண்ணம் அடி மனதில் ஓடிக் கொண்டிருந்தது.

என்ன ஆச்சரியம்! காஞ்சிப்பெரியவர் சீடர்களிடம் வரிசையில் நிற்கும் திருக்கோவிலூர் மணி தம்பதியை அருகில் அழைத்து வர உத்தரவிட்டார். மணி அருகில் வந்ததும் பெரியவர், “உன் குடும்பத்தில் வம்ச விருத்தி வந்தாச்சு. உன் பையனும் இப்பவே வடக்கே போயாகணும். பிரசாதத்தை வாங்கிண்டு உடனே ஊருக்கு கிளம்பு. கர்ப்பிணி பொண்ணை தனியா விட்டு வரலாமோ” என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டே அட்சதை கொடுத்து ஆசியளித்தார்.

தாமதம் செய்யாமல் மணியும் உடனே டாக்சியில் திருக்கோவிலூர் திரும்பினர்.
வீட்டிற்குள் நுழையும் போதே அடுத்த வீட்டுப் பெண்கள் ஓடி வந்தனர். “உங்களுக்கு இப்ப தான் பேரன் பிறந்திருக்கான். சுகப்பிரசவம் தான்” என்று சொல்லி விட்டு 'தந்தி ஒண்ணு வந்திருக்கு' என்று சொல்லி அதையும் கையில் கொடுத்தனர். அதைப் பிரித்து பார்த்த மணியின் கண்கள் அகல விரிந்தன. மகனுக்கு ரயில்வே துறையில் நாக்பூரில் சேர்வதற்கான பணி குறித்து தந்தியில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டிருந்தது.

மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் மணி பேரக்குழந்தையைப் பார்க்கச் சென்றார். தாத்தாவிடம், 'எல்லாம் காஞ்சிப்பெரியவரின் கருணையே' என்று அந்தக் குழந்தை சொல்வது போலிருந்தது. குழந்தைக்கு 'சந்திரசேகரன்' (பெரியவரை சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி சுவாமிகள் என்று அழைப்பது வழக்கம்) என்று பெயரிட்டு வாழ்த்தினார். வாழ்வில் என்றும் மறக்க முடியாத இனிய அனுபவமாக இந்த நிகழ்ச்சி அமைந்திருந்தது என்றால் மிகையில்லை.

இதே போலவே, வேறொரு அற்புதமும் பெரியவரால் நிகழ்ந்தது.

ஒருமுறை பெரியவரை தரிசிக்க பெங்களூருவில் இருந்து பணக்காரர் ஒருவர் வந்தார். பழம், பூ, பட்டுப்புடவை, திருமாங்கல்யம் ஆகியவற்றை தாம்பாளத்தில் வைத்தபடி அவரது மனைவி உடன் நின்றாள். பெரியவரை வணங்கிய அவர்கள், “சுவாமி... யாராவது ஒரு ஏழைப் பெண்ணுக்கு இதை அளிக்க விரும்புகிறோம்,” என தெரிவித்தனர். அதே நேரத்தில், திருச்சி அருகிலுள்ள திருவானைக்காவலைச் சேர்ந்த ஏழை சமையல்காரர் ஒருவர் தன் மனைவி, மகளுடன் அங்கு வந்திருந்தார். தன் மகளுக்கு திருமணத் தேதி குறித்து விட்டதை தெரிவித்து ஆசியளிக்கும்படி வேண்டினார். அப்போது பணக்காரரை அழைத்த பெரியவர், “திருவானைக்காவல் அகிலாண்டேஸ்வரியே இவாளை இங்க அனுப்பியிருக்கா... அதுக்கு காஞ்சி காமாட்சி வழிகாட்டியிருக்கா... கொடுக்க விரும்பினதை இந்த பொண்ணுக்குச் சீதனமாக கொடுங்கோ” என்று சொல்லி ஆசியளித்தார்.

பணக்காரரும் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் திருமாங்கல்யம் உள்ளிட்ட அனைத்தையும் அவரிடம் கொடுத்தார். அப்போது அந்தப் பெண்ணை தீர்க்க சுமங்கலியாக வாழ பெரியவர் வாழ்த்தினார்.

அன்றாட பூஜைகளை முடித்தபின் பக்தர்களுக்கு தீர்த்தப் பிரசாதம் அளித்துவிட்டு, பிட்சைக்கு செல்வது காஞ்சி மகானின் தினசரி வழக்கம். பிச்சையில் கிடைக்கும் உணவையே அவர் உண்பார்.

ஒரு சமயம், வழக்கம்போல் பூஜைகளை முடித்த பின்னர், பிட்சைக்கு செல்லாமல் மடத்திலேயே இருந்துவிட்டார் மகான். பிட்சைக்கு செல்லாததால், அவர் உணவு எடுத்துக்கொள்ளவில்லை. பலரும் வற்புறுத்தியும் உண்ண மறுத்துவிட்டார். இது
மறுநாளும் தொடர்ந்தது. அன்றும் மகான் உணவருந்தவில்லை.

மூன்றாம் நாளும் மகாசுவாமிகள் பிட்சைக்கு செல்லவில்லை . எனவே, மடத்தில் உள்ளோருக்கு பயம் தொற்றிக் கொண்டது.

மடத்தில் உள்ளோர் எதாவது தவறு செய்துவிட்டால், அவர்களை தண்டிப்பதற்கு பதில் மகான், தம்மையே இப்படி வருத்திக்கொள்வது வழக்கம் என்பதால் அவர்களின் அச்சம் அதிகரித்தது. அதனால், எல்லோரும் சேர்ந்து சுவாமிகள் முன் நின்றார்கள்.

"எங்களில் யார் என்ன பிழை செய்திருந்தாலும் தயவு செய்து மன்னித்து, உணவு ஏற்கவேண்டும்..!" எனப் பணிந்து வேண்டினர்.

மகா பெரியவர் சிரித்துகொண்டே, "நீங்கள் யாரும் எந்த தவறும் செய்யவில்லை. உங்கள் மேல் எனக்குக் கோபமும் இல்லை. என்னை திருத்திக்கொள்ளவே நான் இப்படி உண்ணாவிரதம் இருந்தேன்.

கொஞ்சம் நாட்களுக்கு முன் பிச்சையில் கிடைத்த உணவில் வெகு சுவையாக கீரை சமைத்து இட்டிருந்தார்கள். அதனை மீண்டும் சாப்பிடவேண்டும் என்ற ஆசை எழுந்தது.

பூஜைகளை முடித்ததுமே, இன்றைய பிச்சையில் கீரை இருக்குமா?' என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்ற ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டது. மூன்று நாட்களாக அந்த எண்ணம் மனதில் நின்றதால்தான், வயிறைப் பட்டினி போட்டு அந்த ஆசையை விரட்டினேன்.
ஒரு சந்நியாசிக்கு இது மாதிரியான ஆசைகள் வரக்கூடாது" என்றார்.

ஓர் எளிய கீரைக்குக் கூட ஆசைப்படக்கூடாது என்பதில் வைராக்கியமாக இருந்ததால்தான் மகாபெரியவரின் பெருமை என்றும் மதிப்பு குன்றாத வைரமாக மின்னுகிறது.

ஒரு சமயம், வழக்கம்போல் பூஜைகளை முடித்த பின்னர், பிட்சைக்கு செல்லாமல் மடத்திலேயே இருந்துவிட்டார் மகான். பிட்சைக்கு செல்லாததால், அவர் உணவு எடுத்துக்கொள்ளவில்லை. பலரும் வற்புறுத்தியும் உண்ண மறுத்துவிட்டார். இது
மறுநாளும் தொடர்ந்தது. அன்றும் மகான் உணவருந்தவில்லை.

மஹா பெரியவா சரணம்.


ஸ்ரீ ருத்ரத்தின் இறுதியில், மஹா ம்ருத்யுஞ்சய மந்த்ரம் வரும். மிகப் பிரபலமானது.

“த்ரயம்பகம் யஜாமஹே
ஸுகந்திம்
புஷ்டிவர்தனம்.
உர்வாருகமிவ
பந்தனாத் ம்ருத்யோர்
முக்க்ஷீய மாம்ருதாத்.”

இதில் ‘உர்வாருகமிவ பந்தனாத் முக்க்ஷீய’ என்ற வரிகளின் அர்த்தம், ‘வெள்ளரிப்பழம் அதன் கொடியிலிருந்து விடுபடுவதுபோல, என் பந்தங்களிலிருந்து நான் விடுபடவேண்டும்’ என்பதாக அமையும். எனக்கு வெகுநாட்களாக ஒரு சந்தேகம். எந்தப் பழமாயிருந்தாலும், பழுத்தவுடன், ‘பட்’டென்று தன் கொடி, செடி அல்லது மரத்திலிருந்து அறுந்து விழுந்து விடும்தானே! இதில் வெள்ளரிப்பழத்தை மட்டும் ஏன் இந்த மந்திரத்தில் குறிப்பிட்டு சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது என்று. பல வேத விற்பன்னர்களிடம் கேட்டும் த்ருப்தியான பதில் கிடைக்கவில்லை.

பின் ஒருமுறை, மஹா பெரியவா இதற்கு ஒரு அற்புதமான விளக்கம் அளித்திருந்ததைப் படிக்க நேர்ந்தது. அதாவது, மற்ற பழங்கள் போல் அல்லாமல், வெள்ளரிப்பழம் கொடியில் பூத்துக் காய்த்துப் பழுக்கும். வெள்ளரிக்கொடி, தரையோடு தரையாய்ப் படரும். அதனால், வெள்ளரிப்பழமும், தரைத்தளத்திலேயே பழுத்துக்கிடக்கும். அது பழுத்தவுடன், அதைச் சுற்றியுள்ள கொடியின் கிளைகள், இலைகள் போன்றவை தன்னால் அந்தப் பழத்தை விட்டு விலகுமாம். அதாவது, பழம் கொடியிலிருந்து உதிர்வதில்லை. கொடிதான் பழத்தை விட்டு விலகுகிறது.

அதுபோல, ஞானிகளுக்கு, அவர்கள் பந்தம், பற்றை விட்டு விலக வேண்டுமென்பதில்லை. சரியான தருணத்தில், ‘இவர் பழுத்து விட்டார்’ எனத் தெரிந்தால், பந்தம், பற்று போன்றவை அவரை விட்டு தாமாகவே – எப்படி வெள்ளரிக்கொடி தன் பழத்தை விட்டு விலகுகிறதோ, அது போல – விலகி விடுமாம்.

அற்புதமான விளக்கம்.

நமது மந்திரங்களின் ஆழமான கருத்தும் புரிந்துகொள்ள நேர்ந்தது.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Protect me O Incarnation of Righteousness!

There are some specific codes of righteousness to be practiced by sannyasis (ascetics), especially those adorning the pontifical seat have to abide by rigorous discipline and restraints.

It was morning time at SriMatham, Kanchipuram quarter of a century back. There was not much crowd of devotees on that day.

When Sri Maha Periyava was giving darshan, a sumangali (married woman) came there looking like a Goddess bereft of ornaments and decoration. She went straight to Sri Maha Periyava and prostrated to Him. As she got up her eyes were filled with tears.

She stood praying for guidance from Periyava. Obviously a personal problem of a serious nature. Her eyes were pleading and the words trembled on her lips. ‘Will you not glance at me graciously for a moment? Will you not lend an ear to my prayer?’ The Lord of Grace did want to hear the lady’s petition. But then the hurdle was the rule that the pontiff must not speak to a woman, alone. The lady continued to stand there shedding copious tears. Only if she moved away could the other devotees approach Him. How long could this impasse last? With a snap of His fingers Periyava called an attendant.

“Find out if a completely deaf man is here.” The attendant was lucky. In a few
moments he found a deaf man.

“Listen, do as I say. When the man comes with this lady, clap your hands and call him by his name. You can find out if he is really deaf or not from the manner in which he responds.”

Periyaval’s tip was significant. What if the attendant, who had been dispatched on the errand to find a deaf man, brought a man who was not really deaf advising him to stand there as if he were one? That would be harmful to the lady who wished to speak of the problems in her family. So Periyava gave this idea to the other attendant who had escorted the lady. While the deaf man stood nearby, the lady poured out her heart’s woes to Periyava. Periyava listened patiently and spoke to her consolingly. The lady wept, now in joy. It was Lord Siva with the cool crescent moon upon His forehead who had answered her after all! After the lady received prasadam and left, Periyava gestured to the deaf man that he may also leave.

Periyava did not compromise with the rigorous codes prescribed for the ascetic, while showering His grace upon the lady.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: BrahmaSrI Vazhutthur Sri Rajagopala Sharma recalls the blessings he received from Paramacharya

A long-time devotee of Paramacharya, Sharmaji is one of the best Sanskrit pundits who also learnt Veda Shastras through the Patashala curriculum. At a young age, he studied in Kumbakonam Govinda Dikshitar Raja Veda Patashala where he learnt Sanskrit also. A man of Achara anushtanam and good qualities, he later completed his graduation in the Madras Sanskrit College.

He had exceptional interest in teaching Sanskrit to others, which brought him a wide range of students from the very big to the very ordinary. It would be more appropriate to call them the fortunate who were destined to learn Sanskrit from him, rather than students. Some of them were officers of high rank, who made themselves his students despite their age. Some of them were well versed in other languages.

The Mylapore Chennai branch of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan bears testimony to his abilities. Since its inception, he is successfully holding the charge of its Sanskrit education development wing. During his 27 years of service there, he remained as the cause of Sanskrit education to thousands of students. Many of his students have accepted him as their Kula Guru.

On completion of his Sanskrit college education, he went back to Kumbakonam and studied in the Pazhamaneri Aiyur Aiyer Veda Patashala. Then he took up the teaching job in Sanskrit at Ramakrishna Mission School, Chennai and held the post for 26 years.

When he taught in Ramakrishna School, about forty years ago, he started a Purana Pravachana Sabha and conducted discourses in Puranas for three days in a week in the Ramakrishna Mission Central Elementary School auditorium.

Even in those days thirty five years back, people suffered from water scarcity due to paucity of rains. The great, learned man Rajaji was ruling the then Chennai State as its chief minister at that time. He asked people to perform pujas and prayers throughout the state.

Sharmaji says:
It was then that some Asthika well wishers came to me and requested recital of the Virata Parva in Mahabharata. I recited it for over two months continuously. God blessed us with rains during that time on two or three occasions.

Following it, many well-wishers asked me to give a pravachana of the entire Vyasa Mahabharata. Counting on Acharya's anugraha, I ventured to start the Mahabharata pravachana. It took four and half years to complete it, at three days a week. We never approached anyone individually for financial or any other sort of help. There was no shaking of the hundi for voluntary donation during the speech. We just kept a contribution box for those who were willing. It was only due to Paramacharya's Tiruvarul that the pravachana ran for four and half years without any hurdles. Before starting the Puranic story every day, I would recite the Vishnu Sahasranama in full. It was my strong belief that this japam was another main reason for the success of the pravachana.
(After this,) I decided to arrange for recital of Vishnu Sahasranama for 18,000 times every Sunday, for 18 Sundays, to match the 18 Parvas in Mahabharata. The recital was held at different parts of the city on invitation from well-wishers, who also contributed to the targeted count. After seventeen weeks passed by, we were discussing the venue for the last and eighteenth week.
Kanchi Kamakoti Periyavargal who visited Chennai at that time, was staying in Sri Sankara Gurukulam, Abiramapuram. We had darshan of him and submitted for completion of the recital for 18th and last week. He gave us the anugraha to complete the last instalment where he was staying and ordered for announcement of the event over microphone to the people.

It was dwadashi on the next day and we were left with limited time to complete the count of 18,000 before the paranam. It was our custom to start the japa only after kalasha puja and puja to the framed portrait of Sri Lakshmi Narayana Swami.

This custom was followed on the last day too. Paramacharya asked about the tentative time to complete the recital. Since many people participated in the japa. I said we would finish it early. Aisles of bamboos had to be built to regulate the crowd of Paramacharya devotees for his serving teertham to them, which he did at the far end of the Matham.

The recital was over and deeparadhanai was started. When the bell rang, the loud utterance of pundarika from the devotees rented the air. On hearing it, Paramacharya rushed for the deeparadhana darshan, crossing over the bamboo aisles. Only later we came to know that he had asked his assistants to remind him when deeparadhanai started. I carried the kumbha japa teertham, along with its garlands and flowers to submit before Paramacharya. He asked for a wooden stool to keep the kumbham on, since it was the maha japa teertham.

Acharyal sprinkled the teertham on everyone using a bunch of mango leaves and then distributed it as teertham to the people.

I submitted to his lotus feet a large plate that had on it betal leaves, betal nuts, bananas, coconut, a garland of flowers and eighteen one rupee coins.

Paramacharya asked me, "Did you perform the seventeen Sahasranama japams already done in this same manner?" I said that it was so. When he repeated the words, I was moved to tears and replied, "Yes, to the extent of our Shakti."

He ordered the people who participated in the japam to have their meal there. He was very happy. Paramacharya's dialogue with me was held in Sanskrit. Finally he graced us with the words, "Mahat Itam Karyam Sowbhagyodaya Pravartate".

In the evening I went to Gurukulam to get Sri Lakshmi Narayana's framed portrait. It was time for Paramacharya to visit the Sanskrit College camp. He used to start from Abhiramapuram and walk through the Nageswararao Park Street and then via Karpagambal Street. With the portrait in my hand, I joined the crowd of devotees and walked slowly in the front. When we had just turned to enter Karpagambal street, a man hurried towards me and said, "Acharyal is going through your home only", and moved away. I was shocked and surprised. Thinking how it was not known to me walking in this crowd, I rushed to my house.

I arranged for immediate sprinkling of water and drawing of a kolam in front of my house. A festoon of mango leaves was displayed at the entrance. I also arranged for the portrait to be placed on a chair in the front entrance and garlanded, with a standing brass lamp lighted before it. Poorna kumbham and camphor arati were also made ready. Every arrangement was made in a hurry, but without any omissions. Learning about Paramacharya's passing through the street, people started gathering on the footpath.

Our neighbours and we came to the entrances and waited with folded hands. I did not request Swamigal to visit my house, thinking humbly that I did not have that kind of qualification. I learnt that Paramacharya had decided to deviate from his usual path to the Sanskrit College via Nageswara Park Street, Karpagambal Nagar, Vivekananda College East Street and Sullivan Garden Street.

When so many people were yearning for his lotus feet to grace their homes, I was moved to tears of joy at the sudden bhagyam that came my way.

His people would have definitely requested Paramacharya to avoid the present route he took, since that part of the area was littered with black flags and graffiti of atheist slogans. He perhaps thought to sanctify those places with his holy feet. Once when he was advised against going through a slum area to reach the United India Colony in T. Nagar, he said, "Such worse places? Then it is only proper that we go by that way."

A crowd gathered in front of our house. Paramacharya entered and gracefully sat on the wooden Asana decorated with kolam. We did poorna kumbha pada puja and Arati. My wife, children and I came round him thrice and prostrated to him. Paramachara pointed his hand to the divine portrait kept in the inner room and told the gathering, "It is with this Sri Lakshmi Narayana portrait kept for worship, that these people conducted the four-and-half years Mahabharata (pravachana) and the recital of Vishnu Sahasranamam for a total of three lakhs and twenty four thousand counts." Acharyal then clapped his hands to gesture to the people who had gathered inside the house blocking his view to move away. He looked keenly at the portrait and said "Rajagopala!" calling me near him. He let his glance fall on my old house which had a low, tiled roof and asked me, "So this is your house and you are living here?" When I said yes, he told me, "Have another prostration." All our family members prostrated to him again.

Within days after his arrival, we were blessed with an opportunity to leave that old home and acquire the larger home where we are living now. Good things and marriages started happening in this new house, following our moving in.

The fortune of Badrinath and Kedarnath holy yatra also came our way. When I took the blessings of Paramacharya for these trips at his camp in Madurai, he blessed and told me, "Go with all the family! Not only Badrinath, but also visit Kedarnath!"

It was the time when the fear of the eight planets assembling in a line was dominant throughout the world. He asked me to visit Kedarnath as a remedy, and also blessed me with a garland of rudrakshas.

With his abundant grace we had a successful pilgrimage to the places, overcoming with ease the hurdles that came our way.

The journey was delayed at Rishikesh due to landslide on the Himalayan roads en route Badrinath. When the bus trips commenced two or three days later, there was a heavy rush and we feared that we might need to stay longer at Rishikesh than was normal.

I acceded to the request of the people in the Nepali ashram where we stayed and held a discourse in Puranas. I spoke in Sanskrit and a Guruji translated it in Hindi. The North Indian devotees became fond of my discourses. At the end of the discourse I told them about our predicament. I came to know that day the respect and love showered by the North Indians towards Sanskrit pundits.

A man from the crowd of devotees rose and spoke to me, "I shall take up the responsibility of taking you to Badrinath. Be ready in the morning. How many people are there with you?" And he kept up with his words. Even in the Badrinath darshan we had problems of rush, which were solved by good people who appeared suddenly from nowhere at such times. I believe all this happened due to Paramacharya's anugraha. Our Kedarnath pilgrimage was also completed without problems due to his grace.

About twenty of us who undertook the pilgrimage, at last reached Chennai safely. We had a continuous stream of calls from relatives and students seeking to ensure our safe arrival.
I knew the reason for this wide attention only later. After our return, news had come in the press that the routes in the Himalayas were closed due to landslides and that many travellers met with accidents.

Within two or three days, I reached Ilayatthankudi village with family to have darshan of Paramacharya. I submitted the teertham I had brought from Ganga. The Dhanuskoti tirtham had also come. When Paramacharya took his bath in the pond the next morning, he poured over him the two teerthas. Looking at this we felt the happiness of deliverance from the cycle of births. We also took our bath there along with other devotees.

Swamigal later inquired about our pilgrimage and said, "I heard there were landslides in the Himalayan roads?" I replied, "Those things did not affect us since we had the kavacham." He said, "kavacham?” repeating the word. I touched the rudraksha garland on my neck and said, "When this form of your blessing was with us, what hurdle could we have had?" He smiled. We prostrated again and took leave of him.

Even though many years have gone by since these things happened, the memory of them is fresh in mind.

பெரியவா சரணம்!

""ஈஸ்வர சிருஷ்டியில் எதுவுமே உபயோகமானதுதான். தண்டமில்லை""

மகா பெரியவா முன்னால் ஒரு நாள் காலையில் இளைஞன் ஒருவன் அழுதபடி நின்று
கொண்டிருந்தான். பெரியவா கரிசனத்துடன் அவனை விசரிதாதும் அவனது அழுகை
மேலும் அதிகமாயிட்ட்று

சற்று பொருது அவன் தன்னை பற்றி மெதுவாக சொன்னான் , படிப்பு முடிந்து
இரண்டு வருடங்களாகியும் இன்னும் வேலை கிடைக்கவில்லை வீட்டில் உள்ளவர்கள்
ஏச்சும் பேச்சும் தாங்க முடியவில்லை , அப்ப எப்ப பாத்தாலும் என்னை "
தண்டம் தண்டம்னு" குத்தி காட்டிண்டு இருக்கார் மனசுக்கு ரொம்ப வேதனையா
இருக்கு அதான் பெரியவா கிட்ட சொல்லி ஆசிர்வாதம் வாங்கிண்டு போலாம்னு
வந்தேன் என்று கரகரத்த குரலில் சொன்னார் .

கருணையோடு பார்த்த மகா பெரியவா ஒரு பக்கமாக உட்கார சொன்னார் அன்றைய
அனுஷ்டானங்களை முடிக்க வேண்டும் அல்லவா.

தொடர்ந்து தனது செங்கோலாக திகழும் தண்டம் என்று எல்லோராலும்
அழைக்கப்படும் செங்கோலுடன் எல்லோருக்கும் காட்சி அளித்த வன்னம்
அமர்ந்து இருந்தார்

அப்பொழுது அரசுத்துறையில் உயர் பதவியில் இருந்த இன்ஜினியர் ஒருவர்
பெரியவாளை தரிசிக்க வந்திருந்தார் அவரை பார்த்த மகான் புன்னகைத்தார்,
வந்திருந்த இன்ஜினியருக்கோ மனம் நிறைந்த உற்சாகம்.

தான் கையில் இருந்த துரவர திருக்கோலை அவரிடம் காட்டி, இதற்க்கு பெயர்
என்ன என்று கேட்டார்.

இன்ஜினியர் "தண்டம் " என்றார் மிக பணிவாக.

இதுக்கு உன்னால ஒரு வேலை போட்டு தரமுடியுமா என்று கேட்டார் மகான்.

"பெரியவா சொல்லறது எனக்கு புரியலயே", என்றார் இன்ஜினியர் .

மகான் தன் அருகில் எட்ட இருந்த இளைஞனை அழைத்து இவனுக்கு ஒரு வேலை போட்டு
குடுப்பியா? இவனை வீட்டில் எல்லாரும் " தண்டம் தண்டம் " னே கூப்பிடராளாம்

பெரியவா உத்தரவு போட்ட போதாதா. அதுக்காகத்தானே காத்துண்டு இருக்கோம்,
என்றார் இன்ஜினியர் .

சரி ஒரு தண்டத்துக்கு வேலை கிடைச்சிடுத்து இனிமே இந்த தண்டத்துக்கு வேலை
இல்லைன்னு சொல்லிட்டு தன் கையிலிருந்த செங்கோலை சுவற்றின் பக்கம்
சாய்த்து வைத்து விட்டு சொன்ன வார்த்தைகள் இவை:

"தண்டம் தண்டம்னு" கரிச்சு கொட்டராளே அதுதான் எங்களுக்கும் ரக்க்ஷை,
ப்ரும்மச்சரிகளுக்கும் ரக்க்ஷை . ராஜதண்டத்துக்கு அடங்கித்தான்
லோகத்லையே நீதி நியாயங்கள் இருந்தது .

ஈஸ்வர சிருஷ்டியில் எதுவுமே உபயோகமானதுதான். தண்டமில்லை, என்றார்

இவரே எங்கள் தெய்வம் - 9

அந்த மனிதர் ஒரு பிரபல எழுத்தாளர். என் மாதிரியான ஆள் இல்லை. பிரசித்தி பெற்ற வாரப் பத்திரிகை ஆசிரியராக இருந்து, பிறகு தானே ஒரு பிரசித்தி பெற்ற மற்றொரு பத்திரிகை, அதற்கு அப்புறம் மற்றொன்று என்றெல்லாம் புதிதாக தொடங்கிய அனைத்து பத்திரிகைகளும் விரும்பிப் படிக்கப்பட்ட காலம். டிவி ரொம்ப பெண்களை ஈர்க்காத காலம். மொபைல் என்ன வென்றே தெரியாதே.

வெளிநாட்டு பயண கட்டுரைகள் எழுதி பெயர் பெற்றவர். அவர் இப்படி பல நாடுகளுக்கு பறந்து ஆங்காங்கு பார்த்தவர்கள், பார்த்தவைகள், பார்க்க வேண்டியவைகள் பற்றியெல்லாம் ரசிகர்கள் மகிழ ருசிகரமாக எழுதுபவர். ஒரு விஷயம் குறிப்பாக சொல்ல வேண்டியிருக்கிறது.
அவர் காஞ்சி மகா பெரியவாளின் பரம பக்தர். அந்த நடமாடும் பேசும் தெய்வத்தை முக்காலும் வணங்குபவர். எங்கு சென்றாலும் மகா பெரியவா படம் இல்லாமல் செல்ல மாட்டார். தினமும் அந்த படத்தை எடுத்து வைத்துக்கொண்டு மனசார பூஜை பண்ணி வணங்கிவிட்டு தான் மற்றைய வேலைகள்.

ஒரு தடவை உலகப் பயணத்தில் எங்கோ ஒரு மூலையில் உள்ள நாட்டில் ஒரு முடுக்கு நகரத்தில் அவர் தங்கிஇருக்க நேர்ந்தது. அந்த ஊரைப் பற்றி விவரங்கள் சேகரிக்க முயன்றார். அவரது நண்பர் ஒரு ஆங்கிலேயர் அங்கு அப்போது இருந்ததால் அந்த ஊருக்கு சென்றிருந்தார்.
இவர் வந்து அங்கு தங்கியிருக்க வேண்டிய வசதிகள் செய்து கொடுத்த வெள்ளைக்கார நண்பரின் உறவினர் வீட்டில் சில நாள் அந்த சிறிய ஊரில் தங்க முடிவானது.

எழுத்தாளரும் அங்கு சென்றார். அவருக்கு தனி அறை கொடுத்தார்கள் . அதில் அவர் தங்கியிருந்தபோது ஒரு நாள் காலை அந்த ரெண்டு வெள்ளைக்காரர்களும் , அதாவது நண்பரும் அந்த வீட்டுக்காரரும் எழுத்தாளரைக் கண்டு பேச, அவர் அறைக்கு வந்தனர். எழுத்தாளர் வழக்கம்போல் அந்தக் காலை வேளையில் மகாபெரியவர் படத்தை மேசையில் வைத்து வணங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

வீட்டின் சொந்தக்காரர் கண்களில் அந்த மஹா பெரியவர் படம் பட்டதும் அவருக்கு ஏதோ ஆச்சர்யம், எழுத்தாளர் த்யானம் முடிந்ததும் கேட்டார்.

"இந்தப் படத்தில் இருப்பவர் யார்?"

"நான் வணங்கும் தெய்வம்"

'' நீங்கள் எந்த மதத்தினர்?

'இந்துக்கள்''

''இந்து கடவுள்கள் நிறைய கைகள், தலைகள், ஏதோ ஒரு பட்சி அல்லது மிருகத்தின் மேல் -- இப்படி தான் எனக்கு இதுவரை அறிமுகம். இந்த கடவுள் யாரோ ஒரு மனிதராக, கிழவராக அல்லவோ இருக்கிறார் '

''நீங்கள் சொல்வது வாஸ்தவம். இவர் நம்மைப்போல் இந்த உலகில் மனிதனாக இருப்பவர். மிக எளிமையானவர் . ஆனால் தெய்வம்.

''ரிஷி'' என்பீர்களே, அப்படிப்பட்டவரா இவர். எல்லோரும் அப்படித்தான் இவரைச் சொல்வார்களோ உங்கள் ஊரில்?''

''இவர் ஒரு சக்தி வாய்ந்த தெய்வம், ரிஷியும் கூட''

"சக்தி வாய்ந்த தெய்வம் என்றால் நாம் நினைத்தது நடக்கச் செய்வாரா? என்று வீட்டுக்கார வெள்ளையர் ஆவலாகவினவினார்

"நாம் உண்மையாக வேண்டிக் கொண்டால், நிச்சயம் நாம் நினைத்தது போல் நடக்கும். அந்த கருணைக்கடல்அதை நிறைவேற்றி வைப்பார்.

எழுத்தாளர் அளவு கடந்த பக்திமான் ஆச்சே . அவர் குரலில் இருந்த அழுத்தம் சொன்ன தோரணை,அவர் குரலில் ஒலித்த பக்தி, ஆங்கிலேயரை நம்பச் செய்தது.

''நானும் அவரை வேண்டிக்கொண்டு என் முறையீட்டை சொன்னால் உதவுவாரா"? வீட்டுக்கார வெள்ளைக்காரர் குரலில் ஏக்கம் தொனித்தது.

''வித்தியாசமின்றி நம்பிக்கையோடு யார் வேண்டினாலும் குறை நிவர்த்தி செய்வார்''

என் மகன் எங்கோ போய்விட்டான்...சில மாதங்கள் ஆகிவிட்டது. அவனைப் பிரிந்து என் மனைவி ஓயாமல் அழுது கொண்டு இருக்கிறாள். அதனால்தான் ஒரு நம்பிக்கையோடு உங்களிடம் கேட்டேன்.''

"எங்கள் குருவான காஞ்சி மகானை நீங்கள் மனமுருகி பிரார்த்தியுங்கள்..உங்களுக்கு அவரதுஅருள் நிச்சயம் கிட்டும்.

'டப்' பென்று அந்த வெள்ளைக்காரர் சிலைபோல் அங்கேயே அந்த இடத்திலேயே மகா பெரியவா படத்தின் முன்பு அமர்ந்து கொண்டார். கண்கள் மூடியிருந்தது. கைகளைச் சேர்த்து கட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். நேரம் நழுவியது. நிசப்தம். சுமார் அரை மணி நேரத்திற்கு பிறகு கண்களைத் திறந்தார்.

''என்னவோ தெரியவில்லை, என் மனம் இப்போது லேசாகி விட்டது. இந்த மனித தெய்வத்தின் படத்தின் முன் மனமுருகி வேண்டி எனக்கு அருள் புரியும்படி வேண்டிக் கொண்டேன்''

இதைத் தொடர்ந்து ஒரு சில மணி நேரம் அந்த அறையில் மகா பெரியவா பற்றிய விஷயங்கள் பற்றி வெகு ஆர்வமாக அவர் பக்தியோடு கேட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அவரைப் பற்றி நிறைய தெரிந்து கொள்ளவேண்டும் என்று புத்தகங்கள் தேவை' என்று கேட்டுக்கொண்டிருந்தார் . ஒருமுறை இந்தியா வருகிறேன். அவரைப் பார்க்க வேண்டும்' என்றார்.

அப்போது தான் அவரது வீட்டு போன் ஒலித்தது. ஆங்கிலேயர் போய் போனை எடுத்தார்.

''யார் பேசுவது ?''

''என்ன அப்பா என் குரல் மறந்து போய் விட்டீர்களா"" --
காணமல் போன அவர் பையன். போனில் வந்த செய்தி அவருக்கு அளவு கடந்த வியப்பை அளித்தது. காணாமற்போன அவரது மகன் தான் பேசினான், தான் எங்கேயோ போயிருந்ததாகவும், இப்போது ஊருக்கு வந்து விட்டதாகவும்,உடனே வீட்டுக்கு வருவதாகவும் தகவல் சொன்னான்.

அந்த ஆங்கிலேயருக்கு மெய் சிலிர்த்தது.காஞ்சி மகானை வணங்கியபடியே, எழுத்தாளரை இருக கட்டிக்கொண்டார். கண்களில் நீர் பனிக்க ''இனி என் தெய்வமும் .இவர்தான்....இந்த உருவில் தான் இனி நான் வணங்கும் தெய்வத்தை பார்ப்பேன்.

அப்போது உள்ளே வந்த அவர் மனைவியும் விஷயம் கேட்டு, ஆனந்தித்து, தனது மகன் மீண்டும் வரப்போகிறான் என்று அறிந்து பெரியவாள் படத்தை வணங்கினாள்.

''மணியன் உங்களுக்கு நன்றி'' என்று அந்த தம்பதிகள் மனமுவந்து சொன்னார்கள்.

ஆம் அந்த இந்திய எழுத்தாளர் மணியன் தான்..

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Greatness of mantra siddhi

Once a brahmachary (bachelor) youth came to have darshan of Kanchi Mahaswami (HH Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati). He prostrated before the sage and got up.

Swamiji looked at him keenly and said, "Are you not Kulitalai Sankaran? You are fine?"

"With your blessings, yes, Periyava", said Sankaran.

"Alright, what is your age now?"

"Thirty, Periyava."

Periyava laughed: "So you have decided to lead your life as a brahmachari, without any idea of marriage."

"Yes, Periyava", said Sankaran.

"Alright, anything special about your coming here now?" Periyava laughed. "And you wouldn't come without a reason!"

"Yes, Periyava. I have come to get a doubt cleared."

"Is it so? Come on, tell me" said Periyavaa. "What is that big doubt you have?"

"It is a doubt about mantra japam, Periyava", replied Sankaran.

Periyava asked quickly: "If it is about mantra japam... Are you doing any mantra japam?"

"Yes, Periyava”.

"Oho... You have had an upadesam?"

"Yes, Periyava".

"Whoever is that Guru?"

"Mysore Yajna Narayana Ganapadigal", said Sankaran.

"Good, very learned; whatever the mantra?"

Before Sankaran could open his mouth, Swamiji said, "Wait, wait. You should not tell me the mantra. That should remain with you as a secret. Just tell me which devata (God) it is about."

"Hanumat Upasana Paramana Mula Mantra, Periyava" said Sankaran.

"Alright. What is it that you want to get clarified in this mantra japam?"

"It is like this, Periyava. I am performing this mantra japam since my twenty-third year which was when I got the upadesham. I am doing it for the last seven years, still I don't know anything."

"What do you mean by saying 'I don't know anything’?", asked Swamiji with surprise.

"What I mean, Periyava, is that I am not able to find out if I have got the siddhi of that mantra"
replied Sankaran, his voice echoing his sadness.

Swamiji said without hesitation: "What are you going to do by knowing it? Anyway, are you doing the japam for Atmartam (to know the self) or Kamyartam (for a specific purpose)?"
Sankaran said: "I am doing it only for Atmartam, Periyava. Still, I am at a loss to understand if I have got the mantra siddhi and the grace of the devata. I pray to you to kindly tell me about my progress". As Sankaran said this with all humility, tears started rolling down his eyes.

"Only the person who does the japam can understand if he has got the mantra siddhi, by personal experience. There will be a time when the person will experience it, Sankara," said Swamiji with vatsalyam (affection).

Sankaran wasn't satisfied. "No, Periyava. I haven't had any personal experience so far. And I don't understand anything about it, though I continue to do the japam, as advised by my Guru, for the last seven years. Sometimes my mind becomes very tired, Periyava. You should kindly inform me about any way that I can know it." As he spoke this, Sankaran joined his palms in reverence and prostrated before Swamiji.

Acharyal (Swamiji) was quiet for sometime. He understood Sankaran's confusion. He decided to make the disciple understand what he wanted to know. He asked Sankaran to squat on the floor near him and began talking:

"Many years back, in Sringeri Sri Sarada Peetam, a mahaan named Nrusimha Bharati Swamiji was the peetathipathi (pontiff). One day, a shishya (student) of the Matham (hermitage) belonging to that region came to have a darshan of the Swamiji. He did not come for nothing. He bore the same question that you asked me now.

"After prostrating, he presented the guava fruits to Swamiji.

"'Come, you are fine? Tell me what you want', said Swami Nrusimha Bharati with utmost kindness. The sishya told him politely, 'Swami, I am doing japam of a mantra that was given to me by an upadesam. I am doing the japam for many years now. Still I am not able to know if I have got the mantra siddhi. How do I know it Swami?'

"Swamiji said at once, in a bid to persuade him, 'You continue to do the japam in an Atmarta way. That devata itself will bless you with the siddhi phala (fruits of the efforts) eventually.'
"The shishya was not satisfied with this reply from the Swamiji. He persisted, 'No, Swami. I need to know if I have got the siddhi of the mantra. You must tell me a way to know it, I pray to you.'

"Swamiji understood the shishya's mental state. He called him near and said enthusiasticaly, 'Don't worry, my child. There is a way!"

"'Is there a way, then kindly bless me with the knowledge, Swami!' The shishya was in a hurry of excitement.

"Nrusimha Bharati Swamiji said laughingly, 'Every day, before you start your japam, spread paddy grains on a wooden seat, and cover it with a vastram (cloth). Sit over the grains and do the japam. Continue in this fashion day after day. On that day when the paddy grains on the seat fry and blossom into flattened rice, you will understand that you have got the mantra siddhi you have been seeking to know. You understand this?'

"Even though the sishya understood it, he thought confusedly that if the Swamiji was telling him this way just to satisfy him or if this would really be possible. Suddenly he asked an unexpected question to the Swamiji.

"'Gurunathar should excuse me. I pray this to you with an intention to know. I should not be mistaken for testing a sage in the guru sthanam (the position of a guru). Spreading the paddy grains, covering them with a cloth... and they will fry...'

"Before he could finish it, Swamiji laughed and said, 'You want to know if I have had any such experience, right?' He asked for a wooden seat to be brought then and there and placed facing the direction of east. He asked for a lot of paddy grains to be spread over the seat. When this was done, Swamiji placed his vastram (cloth) over the grains, seated himself in padmaasana and
closed his eyes. By this time a large crowd had gathered in the place.

"Only a few seconds later, there was a continuous noise of the paddy grains getting fried and flattened. There was a little amount of smoke also. Swamiji got up and removed his vastram (cloth) that covered the grains. On the seat were dazzling white flowers of fried and flattened rice! The crowd was amazed.

"Nrusimha Bharati Swamiji looked at the shishya who asked the question. The sishya was standing sobbing. No one could speak anything more..."

As Kanchi Swamiji finished his narration of this episode, Sankaran was standing amazed, with tears in his eyes.

When he started to say something soon after, Swamiji interruped him and said, "What Sankara, are you going to ask me to demonstrate to you?" and laughed heartily.

Sankaran fell at Swamiji's feet, his eight limbs touching the floor, and said, "Enough Periyava! You have made me understand the mahima (greatness) of mantra siddhi. Kindly bless me, and
permit me to return to my place."

Experiences with Maha Periyava: And It Rained

Some decades ago, Sri Maha Periyava was camping with his disciples on the banks of Hagari river (near Bellary) for observance of "Chaturmasya Vratam".

The farmers of Bellary district were reeling under severe drought condition. There was no water to drink or water to sow the seeds. (Bellary district is always a dry area in Karnataka area with scanty rainfall). All the farmers approached Swamiji and entreated with Him to come out of their water problem. Swamiji, being moved with their pitiable condition, told them to do ‘Varuna Japam’ (invoking the blessings of rain gods for pouring rains).

They told him that they had already performed ‘Varuna Japam’ continuously for 24hrs previously but to no avail, and said "Swamiji if you bless us now, we will do it again. Swamiji said that His blessings were always there on those who undertake such noble acts for world peace, and also advised them to start ‘Varuna Japam’ immediately and also chant the Panchakshari (five syllabled mantra) "Om Nama Shivaya" continuously for 24hrs.

They did this.

Wonder of wonders!! It rained cats and dogs. The farmers were immensely pleased and began to dance praising Swamiji's greatness (Mahima).

They rejoiced joyously shouting "Bolo Swamiji ki Jai and Hara Hara Mahadeva" which thrilled everybody and the vibrations of this Jay Jayakar attracted the whole village. The news of this miracle (pouring rains) and Swamiji's greatness spread like wild fire throughout Bellary District.

People started coming in large numbers from all parts of Karnataka to have Swamiji's darshan and paid obeisance to Him.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: "Even if the heart is weak some people might still live up to a 100 years!

Kanchi MahaSwamigal was once camped at Nazarathpet near Madras in the year 1959. As He needed sandal paste for His puja, He called a kaingaryam person named Ramamurthy and asked him to grind the sandal paste.

That same day he ground sandal paste and gave for puja, but Ramamurthy felt some uneasiness in his heart in the evening. He rushed to a doctor and got his health checked.

The doctor said after his tests,

"Your heart is weak. You should not carry heavy weights or do strenuous work, especially something like grinding sandal paste."

Ramamurthy came back to Swamigal and told Him about his health condition. As the sandal paste was needed on the next day too, the Mahan called him and gave the work.

Swamigal told him,

Chandramouleeswara will take care of everything. You grind and give me the sandal paste!"

Unable to disobey Swamigal's words, Ramamurthy ground and gave the sandal paste. Again he felt uneasiness in the heart and told Periyava what the doctor had said.

"It would be dangerous only if it is a heart attack. If the heart is weak some people might live even up to a hundred years. You do your work, don't be afraid!” said the Mahan.

Were those not the words of God?

Thereafter Ramamurthy had the bhagyam of grinding sandal paste for the Mahan's puja for a long time. No such uneasiness of heart ever raised its head on those occasions!

ஆன்மீகத்திற்கு ஒரு அடையாளம் ஸ்ரீ காஞ்சி காமகோடி பீட பரமாச்சாரிய சுவாமிகள்!

“பரமாச்சாரியார் எளிமையான வாழ்க்கையை விரும்பியவர். கைராட்டையால் வீட்டில் நூற்ற கதர் நூலால் புனைந்த ஆடையையே அணிவார். ஒரு சிறிய அறையைத் தனது இருப்பிடமாக ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு எளிமையாக அதில் வாழ்ந்தவர்.

அவர் உப்பு சாப்பிடுவதில்லை. அதனால் அவருக்கு வியர்வையின் அவஸ்தை கிடையாது. குக்குடாசன நிலையில் ஒரே காலில் நின்று கொண்டு ஒரு மணி நேரத்திற்கு உரைநிகழ்த்தக்கூடிய அபூர்வ சக்தி படைத்தவர் அவர்.

யோகாசனங்கள் பலவற்றையும் கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தவர்.

மகா சுவாமிகளின் உணவு மிக எளிமையானது. பீடத்தில் அமர்ந்தl நாளிலிருந்து உணவில் புளி,உப்பு,காரம் சேர்த்துக் கொண்டதே இல்லை.

நெற்பொறியும் சில பழங்களும் [கிடைத்தால் மட்டுமே] பாலும்தான் அவருடைய ஆகாரம். குணத்தாலும் செயலாலும் தவறு செய்தவர்களைப் பார்க்க நேர்ந்து விட்டால் அன்று முழுவதும் உபவாசம் இருந்து விடுவார். கல்கத்தாவில் ஒருமாதம் வில்வப் பழம் மட்டுமே சாப்பிட்டு அவர் இருந்திருக்கிறார்

எப்போதும் கமண்டலம்,தண்டம் ,காஷாயவஸ்திரம் இல்லாமல் இருக்கமாட்டார்.
பெண்கள் யாரும் அவரைத் தனிமையாகத் தரிசிக்கமுடியாது. குளிக்கப்போகும் நேரம் தவிர மற்றவேளைகளில் தண்டம் அவருடன் இருக்கும். தூங்கும் போதும்கூட அதைப் பிடித்துக் கொள்வார். எவ்வளவு நேரம் கழித்துத் தூங்கப் போனாலும் விடியற்காலை நான்குமணிக்கே எழுந்து விடுவார்.

முழுமையாக ஜபத்தில் ஈடுபட்டுவிடுவார். வேதம், தர்ம சாஸ்திரம்,புராணம்,இதிகாசம் ஆகியவற்றை முழுமையாகக் கற்றறிந்தவர். ஆங்கிலம், பிரெஞ்சு, தெலுங்கு, கன்னடம்,லத்தீன் மொழிகளை நன்கு அறிந்தவர்.

தமிழ்மொழியில் தனிப்புலமை பெற்றவர். திருப்பாவை திருவெம்பாவை பாடல்களும், கோளறுபதிகத்தையும் தமிழ் மக்களிடையே பக்தியுடன் பரவச் செய்வதற்கு முயற்சி செய்தவர்.

நோயாளிகளுக்கு மருத்துவமனையில் விபூதிப் பிரசாதம் வழங்கவும்,சாகும் தருவாயில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு உதவி, இறுதிகடன்களைச் செய்யவும் உதவியவர்.

ஒரு தடவை அவர் மடத்தில் உள்ள காரியஸ்தரிடம் கல்கத்தாவில் உள்ள ஒருவருக்கு உடனே ஐந்நூறு ரூபாய் அனுப்பி வைக்கும் படி கூறினார். பலருக்கும் அதன் காரணம் புரியவில்லை. சில மாதங்களுக்குப் பிறகு அவரைத் தரிசிக்க வந்த எளியவர் ஒருவர் “சுவாமி! அன்று தாங்கள் அனுப்பி வைத்த ஐந்நூறு ரூபாய்தான், தந்தை இறந்ததும் இறுதிக்கடன்களைச் செய்ய உதவிற்று! என்று கூறினார்.

மகா சுவாமிகளின் கண்ணோட்டமும், எளிமையும், இரக்கசுபாவமும் இணையே இல்லாதவை
ஆன்மீகம் என்றால் என்ன, உண்மையான ஆன்மீக ஞானிகள் எப்படி இருப்பார் என்று நம் குழந்தைகள் கேட்டார்களேயானால் அதை விளக்கவோ, உண்மையான ஒரு ஆன்மீக ஞானியை அடையாளம் காட்டவோ சிரம்பப்படும் கால கட்டத்தில் நாம் இருக்கிறோம். பகட்டு, படாடோபம், நடிப்பு, விளம்பரம், தந்திரம் என்று பல வடிவங்களை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு இன்றைய ஆன்மீகம் நம்மை படாத பாடு படுத்துகிறது. எது ஆன்மீகம் என்று கிட்டத்தட்ட மறந்தே போய் விட்ட நிலையில் நாம் இருக்கிறோம் என்றால் அது மிகையாகாது.

ஆனால் ஆன்மீகத்திற்கும், ஒரு சிறந்த ஆன்மீக ஞானிக்கும் ஒரு நல்ல அடையாளமாய் 1994 வரை இந்த உலகில் ஒரு மாமனிதர் நம்மிடையே நிறைவான வாழ்க்கை ஒன்றை வாழ்ந்து விட்டுப் போயிருக்கிறார்.

சுமார் நூறாண்டுகள் வாழ்ந்த அவரது வாழ்க்கையில் சின்னக் களங்கம் கூட இல்லை. ஜனாதிபதிகள், பிரதமர்கள், அரசர்கள், மந்திரிகள், வெளிநாட்டு உள்நாட்டு மேதைகள் எல்லாம் அவர் இருக்கும் இடம் தேடி வந்து வணங்குவதைத் தங்கள் பாக்கியமாகக் கருதியிருக்கிறார்கள். ஆனால் அந்த மனிதர் அது போன்ற பக்தர்கள் தனக்கிருப்பதில் எள்ளளவும் பெருமிதம் கொண்டதோ, அகங்காரம் அடைந்ததோ

இல்லை. அவர் தான் ஸ்ரீ காஞ்சி காமகோடி பீடத்தின் 68வது பீடாதிபதியாக இருந்த ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி சுவாமிகள். மகாசுவாமிகள் என்றும் பரமாச்சாரியார் என்றும் எல்லோராலும் அழைக்கப்பட்ட மகான்.

மகாசுவாமிகள் எளிமையே உருவானவர்.

காஞ்சி மடத்தின் பீடாதிபதி என்ற பட்டத்திற்குரிய எல்லா வசதிகளும் அவருக்கு இருந்தன. தரிக்க கிரீடம், அமர சிம்மாசனம், அமர்ந்து செல்ல சிவிகை, புடைசூழ்ந்து வர யானைகள், குதிரைகள் எல்லாம் இருந்தன. ஆனால் அவருக்கு அவற்றைப் பயன்படுத்துவதில் ஆர்வம் இருக்கவில்லை. தன் யாத்திரைகளை கால்நடையாகவே அவர் நடந்து செல்வார். தயிரிலோ, பாலிலோ ஊற வைக்கப்பட்ட நெற்பொறியை ஓரிரு கவளம் சாப்பிடுவது தான் அவரது பகல் உணவு. இரவில் சிறிது பால் மட்டுமே சாப்பிடுவார். பொதுமக்களுக்கு தரிசனம் தரும் வேளைகளில் தான் அவர் நாற்காலி அல்லது மனையில் அமர்வார். மற்ற வேளைகளில் சாதாரண கோணிச் சாக்கு மட்டுமே அவருக்குப் போதும்.

பரமாச்சாரிய சுவாமிகளுக்கு பல துறைகளில் நல்ல ஞானமும், ஆர்வமும் இருந்தது. பல நூல்களைப் படித்த அவர் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட துறையாளர்களிடமும் எதையும் நுட்பமாகக் கேட்டுத் தெரிந்து கொள்வார். விஞ்ஞானம், கணிதம், வானவியல், வரலாறு, பூகோளம், சமூக இயல் போன்ற துறைகளில் அவருக்கு இருந்த அறிவு அபாரமானது.

புகைப்படக்கலை, ஓவியக்கலை, சிற்பக்கலை ஆகியவற்றிலும் எதையும் நுட்பமாக ஆராய்ந்து விளக்குவார். பல மொழிகளை அறிந்திருந்தார். இந்த அபார அறிவும் அவருக்கு துளியும் கர்வத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியதில்லை.

தமிழகத்தின் முன்னால் கவர்னராக இருந்த டாக்டர் பி.சி.அலெக்சாண்டர் ஒரு முறை பரமாச்சாரிய சுவாமிகளை தரிசிக்கச் சென்றார்.

ஜனாதிபதிகளும், பிரதமர்களும், அரசர்களும் தொழும் மகா சுவாமிகள் அவரது குடிலில் கோணிச் சாக்கை விரித்து அமர்ந்திருந்ததைக் கண்ட அலெக்சாண்டருக்கு வியப்பு தாளவில்லை. இப்படி ஒரு எளிமையையும், பணிவையும் அவர் எதிர்பார்த்திருக்கவில்லை. அலெக்சாண்டரும் அவர் எதிரே பாயில் காளை மடித்துக் கொண்டு உட்கார்ந்து விட்டார்.
பேசும் போது அலெக்சாண்டர் எதில் டாக்டர் பட்டம் பெற்றார் என்பதை மகா சுவாமிகள் கேட்டார். அலெக்சாண்டர் தான் ஒரு சிரியன் கிறிஸ்துவர் என்றும் சிரியன் கிறிஸ்துவர்கள் பற்றி ஆராய்ந்து டாக்டர் பட்டம் வாங்கியதாகவும் சொன்னார். உடனே பேச்சு சிரியன் கிறிஸ்துவர்களைப் பற்றி எழுந்தது.

அலெக்சாண்டர் ஆராய்ச்சி செய்து அறிந்ததைக் காட்டிலும் அதிகமாக மகா சுவாமிகள் சிரியன் கிறிஸ்துவர்களுடைய சமூகப் பின்னணி, பழக்க வழக்கங்கள், சமூகத் தொண்டுகள், கேரளத்தில் அவர்கள் வேரூன்றிய சரித்திரம் பற்றியெல்லாம் அறிந்திருந்தார். கவர்னர் அலெக்சாண்டர் அடைந்த வியப்புக்கு அளவேயில்லை. வேறொரு மதத்தின் ஒரு சிறு பிரிவைப் பற்றி இவ்வளவு விரிவாக அவர் அறிந்து வைத்திருந்தது அவருக்கு மிகவும் பிரமிப்பாக இருந்தது.

அவருடைய அறிவு ஞானம் இப்படி பல மதங்கள், பல நாடுகள் என்று விரிந்து இருந்தது. ஆன்மீகத்தில் அவர் அடைந்திருந்த ஞானம் அளப்பரியது. இதையெல்லாம் அவருடைய சொற்பொழிவுகளின் தொகுப்பான “தெய்வத்தின் குரல்” படித்தவர்கள் நன்றாக உணரலாம். அவர் சடங்குகள், சம்பிரதாயங்கள் பற்றி அதிகம் விவரிக்காமல் மனித தர்மத்தைப் பற்றியும், ஞான மேன்மைக்கான வழிகளைப் பற்றியும் பேசியது அதிகம். பாமரனுக்கும் புரியும் படியாக பெரிய பெரிய விஷயங்களை மிக எளிமையாக விளக்கும் திறன் படிப்பவர்களை வியப்பில் ஆழ்த்தும்.

பால் ப்ரண்டன் என்ற இங்கிலாந்து தத்துவஞானி யோகிகளைத் தேடி இந்தியா வந்த போது பரமாச்சாரிய சுவாமிகளைச் சந்தித்ததை விளக்கமாக எழுதியுள்ளார்.

பரமாச்சாரிய சுவாமிகளின் ஞானத்தால் அவர் வெகுவாகவே கவரப்பட்டார். தான் இந்தியா வந்த காரணத்தை அவர் சொன்ன போது பரமாச்சாரிய சுவாமிகள் நீ தேடி வந்த யோகி நான் தான் என்று நேரடியாகவோ, மறைமுகமாகவோ சொல்லிக் கொள்ளவில்லை.’நீங்கள் காண வந்த யோகியை நிச்சயம் காண்பீர்கள். மேலும் பயணியுங்கள்” என்றே சொன்னார். அது போலவே பின்னர் பால் ப்ரண்டன் ரமண மகரிஷியிடம் தன் தேடலை முடித்தார்.

உபதேசங்கள் செய்வது சுலபம். அந்த உபதேசங்கள் படி வாழ்ந்து ஒரு உதாரணமாய் திகழ்வது கஷ்டம். பரமாச்சாரியார் அப்படியே வாழ்ந்தும் காட்டியவர். அவருடைய கனகாபிஷேக நிகழ்ச்சியை தொலைக்காட்சியில் காணும் பாக்கியம் எனக்குக் கிட்டியது. நேபாள மன்னர், இந்திய ஜனாதிபதி முதற்கொண்டு பல பெரிய மனிதர்கள் கைகூப்பி நிற்க பரமாச்சாரியருக்கு பொற்காசுகளால் அபிஷேகம் செய்தார்கள்.

மற்றவர்களின் கட்டாயத்திற்கு அமர்ந்திருந்த அவர் சிறு சலனம் கூட இல்லாமல், எதிலும் பாதிக்கப்படாமல், பற்றற்ற நிலையில் கடவுளை தியானித்தவராய் கரம் குவித்து அமர்ந்திருந்தார். ”ஏதோ சிறியவர்கள் ஆசைப்படுகிறார்கள், செய்கிறார்கள், செய்து விட்டுப் போகட்டும்” என்பது போல் பொறுமையாக சகித்துக் கொண்டு அமர்ந்திருந்த ஒரு புண்ணியாத்மாவை அன்று என்னால் பார்க்க முடிந்தது.

வாழ்ந்த நாட்களில் அவர் விளம்பரம் தேடியதில்லை. அனாவசிய சர்ச்சைகளில் ஈடுபட்டதில்லை. நடித்ததில்லை. நல்ல அறிவைப் பெறுவதும், ஞான வழிகளில் ஆழமான நாட்டமும், அறிந்ததையும், உணர்ந்ததையும் போதிப்பதுவுமே அவர் வாழ்க்கையாக இருந்தது.
அவர் 1994 ஜனவரி எட்டாம் நாள் மறைந்த போது அவருடைய பக்தர்கள் மட்டுமல்ல மற்ற மதத்தலைவர்களும், நாத்திகர்களும் கூட அவரை மனதாரப் பாராட்டியது அவர் வாழ்ந்த களங்கமில்லாத வாழ்க்கைக்கு மிகப்பெரிய பாராட்டுப் பத்திரம் என்றே சொல்ல வேண்டும். உண்மையான ஞானி, ஆன்மீகத் தலைவர் என்ற சொற்களுக்கெல்லாம் இனி வரும் சந்ததியருக்கு ஒரு உதாரணம் சொல்ல வேண்டுமென்றால், ஒரு அடையாளம் காட்ட வேண்டுமென்றால் தயக்கம சிறிதும் இல்லாமல் பரமாச்சாரிய சுவாமிகளை நாம் காட்டலாம்.
