காரிலிருந்து இறங்குபவரைப் பார்த்ததும் மடம் -தீ பிடித்துக் கொண்டதைப் போல் ஆகிறது??

ஆம்!! காரிலிருந்து இறங்குபவர் அன்றைய முதல்வர் எம்,ஜி,ஆர்!!

எந்தவித முன் அறிவிப்பும் இல்லை?? அவர் வருகிறார் என்ற செய்தியும் இல்லை??

மடத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்கள் அங்கும் இங்குமாக அலை பாய்கிறார்கள்?? காரணம்??

அன்றைய மடாதிபதியான மஹா பெரியவர் அந்த சமயம் மடத்தில் இல்லை!! முதல்வர் என்றால்
முறைப்படி பூரண கும்ப மரியாதை செலுத்தி வரவழைக்கவேண்டும்??
மடத்தில் உள்ளவர்களின் மருட்சியைப் பார்த்து பொன் மனம் கேட்கிறார்!!

அவரிடம் தயங்கியபடியே விபரம் சொல்லப்படுகிறது!!

மகா பெரியவர் மூன்று கி மீ தூரத்தில் ஒரு குடிலில் தியானத்தில் இருக்கிறார்??

இவ்வளவு தானே?? அங்கே போய் அவரை தரிசித்துக் கொள்கிறேன்?? பதட்டமில்லாத பண்பட்ட வார்த்தைகளை உதிர்த்து விட்டு மீண்டும் காரில் ஏறிக் கொள்கிறார் மக்கள் திலகம்??

மஹா பெரியவர் தங்கியிருந்த குடில் ஒரு குறுகிய சந்தில் இருந்ததால் காரிலிருந்து இறங்கியவர்
எந்தவித பந்தாவும் இல்லாமல் செல்கிறார் குடிலை நோக்கி??
நம் மனதிலோ பிரமிப்பில் நெடிலை நோக்கி??/

இப்படி வருத்தப் படுகிறது முதல்வரை வரவேற்ற அந்த முதிர்ந்த கனி??

உன்னை உட்கார சொல்ல ஒரு இருக்கை கூட இங்கில்லை??

அதனால் என்ன?? இங்கே இந்த மடத்துக்கு நீங்கள் தானே முதல்வர்!! என்றபடி அவர்க்கு எதிரே மண் தரையில் உட்காருகிறார் இதயக்கனி??

இங்கே ஒரு விஷயம் சிலர் அறிந்திருக்க நியாயம் இல்லை, தன் மனதுக்கு மிகவும் பிரியப்பட்ட ஒரு சிலரைத்தான் மஹா பெரியவர் ஒருமையில் அழைப்பார்கள்!! அந்த ஒரு சிலரில் எம்,ஜி,ஆரும் ஒருவர்!!!

ஆசி வழங்கிய பின் தன் ஆதங்கத்தை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறார் அந்த அருள் ஞானி!!

நம்ம மனுஷா முருகனோட அறுபடை வீடுகள்---பழனி--திருச்செந்தூர் திருத்தணி என்று ஒவ்வொன்றுக்கும் தனித் தனியா போகவேண்டியிருக்கு!! அதுக்கு தேக சிரமம்--கால விரயம்--பணச் செலவுன்னு ஆகிறது!!

ஆறுபடைகளையும் ஒரே இடத்துல பிரதிஷ்டை பண்ணும்படியா உன் ராஜ்யத்துல ஒரு இடம் கொடுத்தாய் என்றால் ரொம்ப நன்றாக இருக்கும்!!

இவ்வளவு தானே?? இந்த சின்ன விஷயத்துக்கா என்னைக் கூப்பிட்டிங்க?? ஒரு ஃபோன் பண்ணி சொல்லியிருந்தா கூடப் போதுமே?? நம் நெஞ்சமெனும் மடத்தில் இன்றும்-----தங்கற இந்த மடாதிபதி--அந்த

உன்னை நேரில் பார்க்கணும்ன்னு ஆசை?? என்று பதில் தருகிறார் எதிலும் ஆசை வைக்காத அந்த முனிவர்???

நீ எங்கே எப்போ எத்தனை மணிக்குப் போனாலும் ஜனங்க உன்னைப் பார்க்க ஆசையோட சூழ்ந்துக்கறா!! அதனால தான் இந்த இடத்துக்கு உன்ன வரச் செஞ்சேன்!! அங்கப் பாரு அதற்குள் உன்னைப் பார்க்க ஜனம் திரண்டுடுத்து!! நீ கிளம்பு என்று அன்புடன் விடை தருகிறார் அந்த ஆன்மிக அருங்கனி!!

இப்படியாக உருவானது தான் சென்னை பெஸன்ட் நகரில் உருவாகியுள்ள முருகன் அறுபடை வீடு கோயில்!!!!

எம்,ஜி,ஆர்,அமெரிக்காவில் சிகிச்சை பெற்றபோது யாராலும் விலைக்கு வாங்கப்பட முடியாத யாருக்கும் தனியாக பிரார்த்தனை செய்யும் பழக்கம் இல்லாத அந்தப் பெரியவர் எம்,ஜி,ஆர் ஒருவருக்காக மட்டுமே அவர் நலம் பெற வேண்டி பிரத்யேக பூஜை செய்தார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது????

அருட்காட்சியும்--அரசாட்சியும் அருமையாக அமைந்து விட்டால்---அரசனும்--ஆண்டவனும் ஒன்றே என்பது நமக்கு விளங்குகிறது அல்லவா நன்றே????

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Compassion and Divine Grace of Sri Maha Periyava

Govindapuram Sri Nataraja Iyer was the recipient of Sri Maha Periyava’s affection and grace. He was providing building construction services to people in the name of GRN Builders. He had a lot of devotion to Periyava, and did a lot of kainkaryams to the SriMatham. When Periyava was in SriSailam, he went along with his friend in an ambassador car to have His darshan. After having darshan of Sri Periyava and getting permission from Periyava to return; on the way back to Chennai; the ‘fan belt’ of the car snapped and the car stopped. Being stranded in an unknown place; not knowing what to do, they slowly went to a petrol bunk nearby and parked the car there.

They were worrying in their minds why such a thing had happened at night even though they had got the permission and prasadam from Periyava. If such a thing was to happen, why did Periyava give them permission to them to go? They were thinking of Periyava devotedly in their minds. A Fiat car came to the petrol bunk at that time. The people in the Fiat car, asked the bunk staff to fill the fuel for their car. They asked them what had happened and why they were waiting there at that time. Nataraja Iyer mentioned that the car belt had snapped and were hence unable to drive their car. To that the person mentioned that whenever they started on outstation trips, with due precautions they would have all the spare parts as extra. He said he had a spare fan belt with him and asked them to take it and return safely to their destination. Nataraja Iyer was very astonished. In the middle of the night, a stranger with the fan belt helping in the form of Maha Periyava made him melt with devotion at the compassion and divine grace of Sri Maha Periyava and thanked Him wholeheartedly.

The surprising thing about this incident is that the stranger who had come to help them came in a Fiat car. When he left for the outstation trip, he got the spare parts for his car. But, the fan belt alone was brought for the Ambassador car instead for a Fiat car. Why did he commit such a mistake? He did not do the mistake. To save Nataraja Iyer, this was the divine leela performed by Sri Maha Periyava. In this way, saving His devotees from dangers is no doubt the Siddhic powers of Sri Maha Periyava.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: “Sacred Lotus Feet”

Shri Mahaperiyava, due to His kindness, to bless all the people, like a Sugabrahma Rishi Saint, took avatar as Shri Shri Shri Mahaperiyava, walked this earth and blessed us.

Periyava devotee Srimathi Kanagamma Ramaswami describes an incident to us through Shri Ra. Ganapathy.

Srimathi Kanagamma Ramaswami’s desire was to offer a sandalwood “padhuka” to the holy feet of Periyava. Those are the feet that holds this entire universe.

Her desire was to have the impression of Periyava’s holy feet in the sandalwood paste (Sandhana Kalavai) for her to take back home, so she can do Pooja daily. She prepared the sandalwood paste and went for Periyava’s darshan.

This incident happened at “Kalavai”, the place where Periyava’s Guru and Paramaguru had attained Siddhi. Shri Ra. Ganapathy explains that it was not a coincidence that she had bought the Sandalwood Kalavai for Periyava’s darshan at Kalavai.

For her bhakthi, her family’s devotion, Periyava’s kindness towards devotee’s righteous requests,
Periyava kept His holy feet in the Sandalwood Kalavai. He kept His feet for quite some time that the other devotees were worried that Periyava might catch cold. This amazing event happened on year Shukla, in the month of Puratasi, Krishnapaksha Sashti (the day being a Wednesday).

Srimathi Kanagamma took it home happily. Three months passed and she started to worry about something.

As the sandal started to dry, cracks started to appear in it. She has been praying Periyava’s holy feet daily and she was very upset with the cracks. Since she did not know to whom she could tell about this, she decided to tell this to Periyava. There was a large number of devotees waiting for Periyava’s darshan on that day.

As she neared Periyava for darshan, she was only able to give the sandalwood Padhuka covered with flowers to Periyava. She was unable to tell Periyava about the cracks. Periyava took the “Vanni” flower garland from his head and kept it on the padhuka and gave it back to her. She was still not happy, since she could not tell Periyava about the cracks.

Periyava asked her to install the padhuka at the Acharyal sannidhi at Mayavaram Seetha paati patasalai on Vasantha Panchami occurring during the Tamil month of Thai (Jan – Feb). After saying this, Periyava started to talk to the next devotee standing waiting in the line. Even though Periyava had blessed her with the vanni flower garland, she was still disappointed that, she could not inform Him about the cracks. On the way back to Chennai, her thoughts were completely about this. She decided to tell about this to somebody else and try to find a way to fix it. She consoled herself saying that everything happens according to His wishes. After reaching home, she wanted to ask somebody for ideas to fix the crack. As she moved the flowers, she was surprised to see that there were no cracks.

Where did all the cracks go? How can all those cracks that were there for couple of months just disappear in one day? Was this fixed when Periyava saw it or was it because of the vanni flower garland that was placed on it or was it the sanctity of Periyava’s Sannidhi?

It took a lot of time for Srimathi Kanagamma to come out of her surprise. The cracks have been fixed in such a way that it will not crack once again. As per Periyava’s instructions, she performed the Pooja until Vasantha Panchami. She decorated it with gems and kept it in a glass container. She also wanted to inscribe the slokam about Shri Guru Sharanam and install it along with this padhuka.

Before taking the padhuka to Mayavaram, they came to Kanchipuram for Periyava darshan. They again offered the padhuka to Periyava for His blessings. Periyava kept His holy feet on the sandalwood padhuka, as if to check if it was correct. He sat in squatting position and did achamanam. Everyone was surprised, when Periyava poured the water on His left leg. Is it not the left leg that is worshipped as “Kunjithapatham”? Is it not the left leg that kicks Lord Yama and grants immortality? Maybe that is the reason Periyava chose left leg.

Srimathi Kanagamma, who was seeing all this was more terrified than feeling happy. She thought that by pouring water, the impression in the Padhuka might be lost. Also the sandalwood will become a paste again and will lose the structure.

But to everyone’s surprise, the padhuka stayed as it was. On seeing this Srimathi Kanagamma was overjoyed. Who else could do such wonders other than Periyava? On 30-1-1990, the padhuka was installed in a grand manner and regular Pooja is being performed to this day.

" தாத்தா பாட்டிகள் ஒரு பொக்கிஷம். நிறைய விஷயங்களை அவா கிட்டேயிருந்து தெரிஞ்சிக்கலாம் "

சென்னை ஸம்ஸ்கிருத கல்லூரியிலே 1956-57லே மஹா பெரியவா சில நாள் தங்கி, சாயந்திரம் தினமும் பிரசங்கம் நடைபெறும். கேக்கணுமா. பெரியவா பேச்சை கேக்க கூட்டம் அலைமோதும். அன்று ராஜாஜி வந்திருந்தார். என்ன பேசறதுன்னு மகாபெரியவா முடிவு பண்ணலை. பக்கத்திலே ப்ரொபசர் சங்கரநாராயணன் நிக்கறதை பெரியவா பாத்து அவரை பக்கத்திலே கூப்பிட்டா.

அவர்கிட்ட ஒரு ஸ்லோகத்தைச் சொல்லி அதிலே முதல் ரெண்டு வரியை சொன்னா.

"உனக்கு அடுத்த ரெண்டு வரி இருக்கே அது தெரியுமா"?

''பெரியவா க்ஷமிக்கணும். எனக்கு தெரியலை''

இப்படி பெரியவா ஒரு ஸ்லோகத்தை பத்தி பேசினது மைக்லே எல்லோருக்கும் கேட்டுடுத்து.

கூட்டத்திலே ஒருத்தருக்கு அந்த ஸ்லோகம் தெரிஞ்சிருந்தது. அவர் மெதுவாக மேடைக்கு அருகே வந்து ப்ரொபசர் சங்கரநாராயணன் கிட்டே '' சார், பெரியவா கேட்ட அந்த பாக்கி ரெண்டு அடி எனக்கு தெரியும் அது இதுதான் என்று அவரிடம் சொன்னதை ப்ரொபசர் சந்தோஷமா மேடையிலேறி பெரியவா கிட்ட''பெரியவா அந்த மீதி ரெண்டு வரி இது தான் என்று சொன்னவுடன்,

''நான் கேட்ட போது தெரியாதுன்னியே''?

''ஆமாம் பெரியவா. கூட்டத்திலே யாரோ ஒருவருக்கு தெரியும்னு வந்து எங்கிட்ட சொன்னதைத்தான் பெரியவா கிட்ட சொன்னேன். ''

''அவரை இங்கே அழைச்சிண்டு வா''

இந்த நிகழ்ச்சியை சொன்ன சி.ஆர். சுவாமிநாதனை மேடையில் தன் கிட்ட கூப்பிட்டு பெரியவா

''நீ தான் அந்த ரெண்டு வரியை சொன்னதா?''

''ஆமாம் பெரியவா''

''எங்க படிச்சே?''

''மெட்ராஸ்லே பிரெசிடென்சி காலேஜ்லே''

''நான் அதைக் கேக்கலே. இந்த ஸ்லோகத்தை எங்கே படிச்சே?''

''எங்க தாத்தா சொல்லிகொடுத்தது சின்ன வயசுலே''

''எந்த வூர் நீ, உங்க தாத்தா யார்?''

சுவாமிநாதன் விருத்தாந்தம் எல்லாம் சொன்னார்.

பெரியவா சுவாமிநாதன் பேசினது அத்தனையும் மைக் வழியா சகல ஜனங்களும் கேட்டிண்டு இருந்தா.

பெரியவா சொன்ன ஸ்லோகம் இது தான்

அர்த்தாதுரணாம் ந குருர் ந பந்து ,
க்ஷுதாதுராணாம் ந ருசிக்கி ந பக்வம் ,
வித்யாதுராணாம் , ந சுகம் ந நித்ரா ,
காமாதுராணாம் ந பயம் ந லஜ்ஜா

பணமே லக்ஷியம் என்று தேடுபவனுக்கு குரு ஏது பந்துக்கள் ஏது?
பசி காதடைக்கிறவனுக்கு ருசியோ, பக்குவமோ அவசியமா?
படித்து முன்னேர முனைபவனுக்கு வசதியோ தூக்கமோ ரெண்டாம் பக்ஷம் தானே?
காமாந்தகாரனுக்கு பயமேது வெட்கமேது?
தான் பிறகு பேசும்போது பெரியவா கேநோபநிஷதிலிருந்து மேற்கோள்கள் காட்டினார். எப்படி பார்வதி தேவி தேவர்களுக்கு பிரம்மத்தை உபதேசித்தால் என்றெல்லாம் விளக்கிவிட்டு
இப்போ பேசுறதுக்கு முன்னாலே ஒருத்தரை மேடைகிட்ட கூப்பிட்டு ஒரு ஸ்லோகத்தின் முதல் ரெண்டு அடிகளை சொல்லி பாக்கி தெரியுமா என்றதற்கு தெரியும் என்றார். எங்கே தெரிஞ்சுண்டே என்று கேட்டதற்கு,சின்ன வயசிலே தாத்தா வீட்டிலே சொல்லிக்கொடுத்தார் என்றார். எனக்கு அவா குடும்பத்தை தெரியும்.

இந்த நிகழ்ச்சியிலிருந்து என்ன தெரிகிறது?

நான் எதுக்கு இதை பெரிசா எடுத்து சொல்றேன்னா, இதெல்லாம் வீட்டிலே பெரியவா கிட்டே தெரிஞ்சிக்கணும். இதெல்லாம் பள்ளிக்கூடத்திலேயோ, காலேஜ்லேயோ சொல்லித்தரமாட்டா.

சேர்ந்து ஒண்ணா வாழற குடும்ப வாழ்க்கையிலே இது ஒரு பெரிய லாபம் என்பதைபுரிந்து கொள்ள உதவும்.

"தாத்தா பாட்டிகள் ஒரு பொக்கிஷம். நிறைய விஷயங்களை அவா கிட்டேயிருந்து தெரிஞ்சிக்கலாம்"
சின்ன வயசிலேயே சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க தாத்தா பாட்டியை விட வேறே சிறந்த குரு யாரும் கிடையாது. மனதில் நன்றாக படியும்
அது தான் பசுமரத்தாணி என்கிறது.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Build a Ramar temple

This is a time when Sri Maha Periyava was in a Mukham (camp), in the year 1978, at Hampi. The Yuvaraja (prince), of Sandur, had made Ramesh Bhatt the assistant of the Rajapurohita (royal priest) of Sandur. Maharaja used to stay in Hampi, in order to provide the facilities required for Periyava's Mukham.

During night, when Periyava's assistants, were sleeping, Ramesh Bhatt alone would be awake, enjoying Periyava's singing with raagam (specific musical note), the Soundarya LaharI, Shivananda LaharI and many other shlokas (verses). Whenever Periyava rose from his sitting, he would wake up the sage's personal assistants.

One day after finishing singing a Soundarya LaharI shlokam, calling him, Periyava asked, "All those who come to me seek something from me, whereas you don't ask me anything, why?"
Ramesh Bhatt: "Periyava is God. His Holiness knows everything. So, there is no avashyam (necessity), for any sort of prayer."

Periyava, at once: "Your tagapanar (father), has taken a sankalpam (vow), to do Rama-pratishta (installation of Lord Rama's statue), in your gramam (village). You do purti (fulfil it)."

The native village of Ramesh Bhatt named Kalkatigi, is located at 130 kilometers in the region, of Dharwar (Karnataka). Ramesh's father had never come for darshan of Periyava. And Ramesh did not know that his father had taken such a sankalpam.

Ramesh: "My salary is very low. How can I build a Ramar kovil, Periyava?"

Periyava: Without any difficulty, in ten years, you are going to build the kovil, with your own earnings, and without getting any donation of any sort."

After few days the Mukham moved from Hampi and Ramesh got the opportunity of a job, as a tabla vidwan (drums expert), attached to the All India Radio Station at Dharwar. He also got the opportunity of performing in private concerts. With those earnings, in the tenth year thereafter, Ramesh built a Ramar temple and completed pratishta (installation) of the vigrahas his father had bought.

Ramesh Bhatt would say, his gratitude brimming up, "It was not with my money, only by Periyava's Anugraham, that I could build this temple."

”நீ சொல்லவே வேண்டாம் டாக்டர் எந்த ஆபரேஷன் செய்தாலும், என்னை ப்ரார்த்தனை செய்யாமல் ஆரம்பிக்க மாட்டார்”

டாக்டர் கல்யாணராமன் புகழ் பெற்ற் நரம்பியல் நிபுணர் என்பது உலகறிந்த விஷயம். அவர் பெரியவாளிடத்தே வைத்திருந்த அளவு கடந்த பக்தி பற்றியும் அனைவரும் அறிவார்கள். ப்ரதோஷமாமா பக்தி ஊட்டி வளர்ந்தவர் அவர். தான் மேல் படிப்புப் படிக்க லண்டன் சென்றபோது கூட பெரியவா உத்தரைக் கேட்டுத்தான் சென்றார்.

ஒருமுறை இவரிடம் சிகிச்சை பெறும் நோயாளியின் தாயார்,தான் பெரியவாளிடம் போய் அறுவை சிகிச்சைக்காக வேண்டிக்கொண்டு வந்த விவரத்தை டாக்டரிடம் சொன்னாள்.

”என் பொண்ணுக்கு இரண்டு நாளில் அறுவை சிகிச்சை பெரியவாதான் நல்லபடியா நடக்க அனுக்ரஹிக்கணும்.”

இப்படி பெரியவா சொன்னதைக் கேட்ட அந்த அம்மாள் வீட்டிற்குக் கூடப் போகாமல் நேரே டாக்டரிடம் போய் பெரியவா சொன்ன விஷயத்தைச் சொன்னாள்.

டாக்டருக்கோ இன்பம் மேலிட்டால் கண்களில் ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீர்!

”அப்படியா சொன்னார்?”

ஆமாம் நான் எந்த ஆபரேஷன் செய்தாலும் கை அலம்பும் சாக்கில் காலில் உள்ள செருப்பைக் கழற்றிவிட்டு பெரியவாளை அந்த நேரம் ப்ரார்த்தனை செய்வது வழக்கம். இதுவரை யாருக்கும் தெரியாது என் பழக்கம் பற்றி. என் பெற்றோர்,மனைவி யாரிடமும் சொன்னதில்லை. என் பணியாளர்கள் கூட செருப்பு மேல் தண்ணீர படாமல் இருக்கவே நான் செருப்பைக் கழற்றுவதாக
நினைத்திருக்கிறார்கள்…..ஆனால் தனக்குத் தெரியும் என்று பெரியவா எனக்கு உணர்த்தி விட்டார்!”

இப்படி உருகிச் சொன்ன டாக்டர் இதுவரை நடந்த அத்தனை ஆபரேஷனுக்கும் பெரியவா துணை தனக்கு இருந்தது அறிந்து மெய் சிலிர்த்தார்!

டாக்டர்தம் தகப்பனாருக்கு ஹார்ட் கோளாறு வந்தபோது, டாக்டர் ஸ்ரீமடத்திற்குச் சொல்லி பெரியவா பாதுகைகளை அளிக்குமாறு வேண்டினார். பெரியவாளும் மனமிரங்கி தன் பாதுகைகளை அவருக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்தார். அந்த கண்டத்திலிருந்து அவர் தகப்பனார் மீண்டார்.அன்றிலிருந்து அவர் கடைசி காலம் வரை பாதுகைகளைத் தன் தலை மாட்டில் வைத்துக் கொண்டு உறங்குவதை பாக்யமாகக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

Karma is the beginning of Yoga

Many people think that Yogam (Yoga) is the process of controlling one’s breath and sitting still like a statue. The direct meaning of Yogam is ‘to combine or merge’. In our lives we need to merge (combine) with many things. But none of these combinations are permanent. The mind is also constantly wavering. On the contrary, if we can join with the thing that is the ultimate and if we remain inseparable from it, that is true yoga. Paramatma, the origin of our mind is that ‘ultimate thing’. Yogis control their breath to turn their mind inwards – towards that ‘Original’ thing. The root of all thoughts is also the root of our breath. So if the breath can be focused towards that ‘Origin’, the mind too reaches there and settles down.

The opposite of Yogam is ‘Viyogam’. We use the word Viyogam to indicate separation. When a person dies he leaves his body. We refer to this as ‘Deha Viyogam”.

“If we can bring about a kind of Viyogam, that itself will become Yogam” says Sri Krishna in the Gita. If we can bring about Viyogam in a specific thing, i.e if we leave it, then that is Yogam- says He. What is that one thing? It is ‘Sorrow’. He says ‘if you are able to keep sorrow away- without it getting attached to you, that is Yogam’.

“Tam vidyaad dukha samyoga viyogam yoga samjnitam’ ( 6: 23)
Even ‘worldly pleasures’ are a form of this sorrow. All experiences where one remains separated from Paramatma are sorrowful.

Happiness and sadness occur because the mind is constantly wandering. If the mind could be stopped from wandering, there is no happiness or sadness. Training the mind to pointedly focus on a single object develops purity of mind. This is referred to as ‘Ekagram’. This is the means to attain Yoga Sidhi. Only Yogis are capable of controlling their breath and sitting still, right from the beginning. This is not possible for others. If we can involve ourselves completely in a good activity, the mind will remain pure. If we directly try to control the mind, it will become unmanageable and run in different directions. Therefore, without paying attention to the mind, if one gets involved in a good activity, then the mind will have less chance of wandering.
In the olden days devotees used to wear a ‘Arikantam’. It is a big iron ring worn round the neck to prevent them from lying down. After wearing it, a person will not be able to lie down even if he wishes to. We too should fully immerse ourselves in good activities, which, like the arikantam, will prevent the mind from unwanted thoughts.

In earlier times, people took up many valuable activities like performing massive Yagnas, practising vrathas, constructing large Gopurams for temples, digging ponds etc. Completing these was not their only goal. The main objective was to focus the mind and develop purity of mind. While carrying out these responsibilities they would have faced many difficulties and insults. Since the work had to be completed, they used to ignore the difficulties and insults and continue with the effort. This is a good way to develop purity of mind. Control of breath and meditation can come later.

Finally, like the kazhakkodi (a spherical seed) which rolls without allowing any dust to settle on it – if we were to sprinkle some vibhuti on it, it would shake off the vibhuti and roll – we too will roll towards Paramatma and join Him, without getting attached to joy and sorrow. This ‘joining’ with Him is called Yogam. That was our original state and is the final state too. In between we have got distorted and are not able to comprehend that state. If we have to start from where we are and reach that state, we have to start with the performance of Karma (Anushtanams).

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Medicine for Kidney ailments

Both the kidneys did not function. Survival was very difficult. He had spent a lot of money visiting several specialists and had taken the medicines prescribed by them, but all was in vain.

The man came to Sri Maha Periyava and poured out his grief. Generally, Periyava showed kindness and compassion towards devotees who came with such problems, but on that day He spoke quite harshly.

"People commit mistakes and adharma, and come here when they have a problem. They don't realise their faults at all. What can I do?"

Why this sudden outburst from Periyava? No one could understand.

After a while, Periyava said, "This man's ancestors had established a Trust for doing dharma activities. They had left behind land which gave a good yield. It was intended to erect water booths and carry out the dharma activities. But this man has sold the land, and gobbled up all the money".

The man who came with kidney problems felt very guilty. "Henceforth, I will erect water booths and carry out the dharma activities", promised the man.

Periyava at once softened. "Are you aware of vasambu (acorus calamus)? You will get it in traditional stores selling herbal medicines. Grind it and apply under your belly regularly", said Periyava.

The man came again for darshan after about ten to twelve days. Even before Periyava could ask, he said, "There is no trouble now".

How will there be trouble when the Sarveshwaran Himself has prescribed the medication...?

Experiences with Maha Periyava: The 64th Nayanar

There was a bank director in France who was keen on having a darshan of Maha Periyava having heard a lot about him. Dr. Raghavan used to receive frequent phone calls from the bank director. He would ask if he could come and have a darshan of Periyava. Dr. Raghavan who was a Sanskrit professor in the Madras University would inform Periyava about the request. Even though he said, "He is very keen to have darshan of Periyava; he bothers me frequently", Periyava did not give his consent to meet him. Some years passed in this way.

Suddenly one day Dr. Raghavan received intimation that said, “I have arrived at Bombay. I shall come over to Madras and meet you. Please arrange for the darshan.”

At that time our Acharyas were staying in the Mylapore Sanskrit College. One evening Dr. Raghavan was waiting to have darshan of Maha Periyava. Periyava called him and inquired. When told about the Frenchman's proposed visit to Chennai, Periyava said, "Alright, bring him."

Before he sat for the upanyasam after the puja, Periyava called me and said, "If any European turns up, seat him on a chair, as he would not be able to sit on the floor. I shall see him after the upanyasam."

When the upanyasam was over and Periyava was about to get inside he asked, "Did anyone turn up?" "No one turned up", I replied. At that time a man wearing a dhoti and towel came to the front and prostrated to Periyava four times. (The sampradaya is to always prostrate to sannyasis four times.) Behind the man came Dr. Raghavan and SankaraNarayana Aiyer (professor of Philosophy at Mylapore Vivekananda College). Since that European came in dhoti and towel, I was misled. Periyava told me, "Ask him how did he knew about prostrating four times." The European said, "I did as everyone did here."

Periyava told me, "Bring only the Frenchman." I said, "I wouldn't understand the English he speaks. It would be better if Dr. Raghavan or SankaraNarayana Aiyer is present."

"The English you know would suffice. You bring him," quipped Periyava. Dr. Raghavan andSankaraNarayana Aiyer stood outside the thatti (a coconut leaf weaved sheet of cover).

The Frenchman who came inside and sat spoke: "I have been studying Vedanta for sometime now. Suddenly one day I felt that my entire body had gone numb, that I was residing outside the body, and my figure was extended from the earth to the sky. I also saw the Universe hanging from my body. It was very blissful at that time. There was no trace of sorrow. After this incident, nothing bothers my mind in my daily life. My wife is deceased. My son too is dead. These occasions did not create any ripple in my mind. I was always blissful.

"People in the bank think I am insane, looking at this mental state of mine. So I have an inherent fear that one day they might put me behind the bars of a hospital".

Periyava uttered cryptically with love beaming in his face and a strange kind of admiration at the Frenchman, "What is inside? And what is outside? Is not everything inside the four walls?"

This question created a big change in him. His eyes were seen brimming with tears as if he was one with the Universe represented by the Pontiff.

There was silence, not a leaf whispered...

Then he composed himself and then requested Periyava, "You should always be with me." Finally, he asked Periyava to give him some upadesham.

Periyava said, "Continue what you are doing now (meditation). I shall be with you till your attainment." He tore a piece of the vastram he was wearing then and gave it to the Frenchman with the words, "Keep this always with you as my prasadam." Such a great anugraha for him on that day. He took leave with immense happiness, having received the grace.

Coming outside, the Frenchman prostrated to Dr. Raghavan and said, "It was only because of you I got this much bhagyam."

Periyava went to bed after they were gone. After he retired, I asked him about a doubt in my mind.


Without replying anything to me, Periyava lapsed into sleep. He called me the next morning before he started his one hour japam. He asked me, "Do you know how many Nayanmars are there?"

I replied, "The Arupatthu Moover Utsavam is held (every year)! So, only sixty three."

"Go to the Kapaleeswarar temple, count and come back," he said. When I did it, I counted sixty seven. I told this to Maha Periyava.

"Who are those four people in excess?" he asked me.

I went back to the temple, inqured and came back. "One of them is the 'Appalum Adi Sarndharukku Adiyar!'" I said.

Periyava graced me with the knowledge, "Appal is those who are beyond desam and kaalam. Since the element of time is involved, it also refers to the Adiyars to be born hereafter also. This man is beyond desam. He has just four janmas left."

Though Periyava who was such a jnani is not among us now, He is always living in His figure of grace and giving us abhayam!

பெரியவாளுடன் பொங்கல் பண்டிகை !

ஶ்ரீமடத்தில், போகிப்பண்டிகையன்று போளி, ஆமவடை செய்து ஸ்ரீ சந்த்ரமௌலீஶ்வரருக்கு நைவேத்யம் செய்வார்கள்.

மறுநாள் மகர ஶங்கராந்தியன்று, காலை ஸ்ரீ சந்த்ரமௌலீஶ்வர பூஜை ஆனதும், ஸூர்ய வெளிச்சம் விழும் இடத்தில், ஸூர்ய பகவானுக்கு மாக்கோலத்தில் தேர் வரைந்து, நடுவில் ஸூர்யனும் சந்த்ரனும் வரையப்படும்.

ஸூர்யனுக்கு பொங்கல் நைவேத்யம் ஆனதும், பெரியவா, ஸூர்யபகவானுக்கு தீபாராதனை காட்டுவார்.

மாட்டுப் பொங்கலன்று, ஸ்ரீமடத்தின் பஶுக்கள், காளைகள், கன்னுக்குட்டிகள் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் 'ஜம்'மென்று குளிப்பாட்டி, மஞ்சள் குங்குமம் இட்டு, கொம்புக்கு வர்ணம் பூசி, மாடுகளின் கழுத்தில் வேப்பங்கொத்து, மாவிலை, கரும்புத்துண்டு எல்லாவற்றையும் தோரணம் மாதிரி கட்டுவார்கள்.

"மாடுகள் எல்லாத்தோட கொம்புக்கும் வர்ணம் பூசியாய்டுத்தோ? முகத்துக்கும், பின்புறத்துக்கும் மஞ்சள் குங்குமம் பூசியாயிடுத்தோ? நெட்டி மாலை போட்டாச்சா? கறுப்பு கயறு கட்டித்தா?...."
பெரியவாளின் அன்பான அக்கறையான விஜாரிப்பில், மாடுகளும், யானைகளும், குதிரைகளும் கனஜோராக ரெடியாகும்!

'ஜல்ஜல்' லென்று ஶப்தம் போடும் மணிகளையும் கட்டிவிடுவார்கள். ஸாதாரணமாகவே மாட்டின் கழுத்தில் கட்டியிருக்கும் மணியோசையைக் கேட்கும் போது, நம்மை மானஸீகமாக கோலோகத்துக்கே கொண்டு போய்விடும்!

மாடுகள் மட்டுமில்லாமல், யானைகள், குதிரைகள் கூட அழகாக அலங்காரம் செய்யப்பட்டு, முதலில் யானைகளும், பின்னால் குதிரைகளும், அதன் பின்னால் மாடுகளும் கன்னுக்குட்டிகளும் நிறுத்தி வைக்கப்படும்.

தன் குழந்தைகளின் அலங்காரத்தை, அணிவகுப்பைக் காண, நம்முடைய 'ஜகத்பிதா' நடுவில் ஒரு மேடையில் வந்து அமர்ந்து கொள்வார்.

மாட்டுப் பொங்கலன்று மாடு-கன்றுகளை அவிழ்த்து ஓடவிட்டு, ஆனந்தமான கோலாஹல ஓட்டப் பந்தயமும் நடக்கும்.

மாட்டை கவனித்துக் கொள்பவர்தான் பொங்கல் வைப்பார். பூஜை செய்து, கல்பூரம் காட்டி ஹாரத்தி எடுப்பார். அதன் பின், பூசணி இலையில் பொங்கலை வைத்து, எல்லா மாட்டுக்கும், கன்னுக் குட்டிகளுக்கும் குடுப்பார்.

யானைகளுக்கும், குதிரைகளுக்கும் பொங்கல் குடுத்தானதும், ஸ்ரீமடத்தின் அத்தனை கார்யஸ்தர்களும், பக்தர்களும் ஒரு பெரிய ப்ரதக்ஷிணமாக, நம் பெரியவாளையும் சேர்த்து, யானை, குதிரை, மாடு கன்னுகளை சுற்றி வந்து நமஸ்காரம் செய்வார்கள்.

அப்படி ப்ரதக்ஷிணம் செய்யும்போது "பொங்கலோ பொங்கல்! பொங்கலோ பொங்கல்!" என்று கோஷித்துக் கொண்டே செய்வார்கள்.

பல ஸமயங்களில், ஸ்ரீ ஜெயேந்த்ர பெரியவாளும், ஸ்ரீ விஜயேந்த்ர பெரியவாளும் அங்கு
பெரியவாளோடு இருந்து எல்லாரையும் அனுக்ரஹம் செய்வார்கள்.
யானை தன் தும்பிக்கையில் புஷ்பமாலையை எடுத்து வந்து, ப்ரத்யக்ஷ ஶங்கரர்களான மூன்று பெரியவாளுக்கும் சூட்டும்!

இதை கல்பனையில் நினைத்தாலே நம்முடைய மனஸும் 'பொங்கலோ பொங்கல்' என்று இனம் புரியாத மனநிறைவில் பொங்கி வழிகிறது!

ஸ்ரீமடத்தின் கார்வார் [மானேஜர்] வந்து கார்யஸ்தர்கள் ஒவ்வொருவர் பெயராக வாஸித்து, எல்லாருக்கும் புது வேஷ்டி குடுப்பார். பெரியவா ஒவ்வொருவரிடமும் அழகாக சிரித்துக் கொண்டே.......

"பொங்கல் பொங்கித்தா....?.." என்று கேட்டதும், ஏற்கனவே ஆனந்தத்தில் பொங்கிக் கொண்டிருப்பவர்கள், பெரியவாளே தங்களிடம் கேட்டதும்,

"அமோகமா பொங்கிச்சு ஸாமீ!..." என்று ஸந்தோஷமாகக் கூறுவார்கள்.

எல்லாருடைய ஹ்ருதயத்திலும் அன்பு, ஜீவதயை, ஸத்யம் இவையெல்லாம் அக்ஷயமாக பெருகிப் பொங்கி, அந்த 'ஶங்கர'னின் திருவடியை அபிஷேகம் செய்யட்டும்.

Protection of Cow

Protection of cow is a dharma that can be performed by people of all communities in the world. It is a dharma that can be carried out by people of all the four varnas and other communities. In addition to our Hindus, Buddhists and Jainas too have been engaged in rearing and protecting the cow.
All animals other than the cow feed their milk to their young ones and protect them; that too for a short time. But in the case of the cow, she gives her milk to anyone and protects him till the end of her life.
With such considerations in view, it is said in Sastras that the cow should be protected at all costs. In all Vedic rituals it is the practice to say “गोब्राह्मणेभ्यः शुभमस्तु नित्यम् “ – “Gobrahmanebhyah Subhamastu Nityam”- “May cows and brahmanas be always happy”. Here the cow is mentioned first. If the cow is comfortable, the entire world will be happy. It is because all people gain comfort from the cow, worship of cow has been accorded importance. It is to be noted that the cow has abundance of milk such that after satisfying the need of her calf, she is able to feed other people with milk. No other animal has this trait.
When Jainas (Samanas) rose against Vedic religion and troubled people in a big way in Madurai, the minister Kulachiraiyar and queen Mangaiyarkkarasiyar of the Pandyan king prayed to Sri Tirugnanasambandhamurthy Swamigal to rescue the Vedic religion.
Huge philosophical debates ensued between Sri Tirugnanasambandhamurthy and the Jainas; the latter were defeated in argument. Then both parties vowed to write down on separate palm leaves that their religion alone was true and to float the palm leaves in the river Vaigai.
It was agreed that whichever leaf swims against the river current conveys the true religion. Sri Tirugnanasambandhar wrote the ‘Vazhthu Padigam’ (Song of Benediction) on his palm leaf; this song had as its first line ‘Vaazhga Andanar Vaanavar Aan inam’. His palm leaf swam against the water current for ten miles and reached the shore at a place called ‘Tiruvedagam’. The deity there is known as ‘Patrika Parameswara’; Patrika is leaf and as the leaf was washed ashore at that place, the Lord got that name. The script in the palm leaf says ‘Aaninam vaazhga’- ‘May the breed of cows live long’. As the cow has such distinction, it is necessary for everyone to worship her.
Though all communities follow dharmas in general, there is a special dharma enjoined on each community. As regards the dharmas to be performed by Vaisyas, Bhagavan Sri Krishna has mentioned them in a verse in Bhagavad Gita – “कृषिगौरक्ष्यवाणिज्यं वैश्यकर्म स्वभावजम्“- “Krishi Gourakshyavaanijyam vaisyakarma svabhavajam”. Bhagavan has prescribed three activities for Vaisyas.
The first one, ‘Krishi’ means agriculture, ploughing the field and raising crops for people’s consumption. The second is protection of cow. The third is trade and commerce and helping people through them. This would mean that Vaisya’s duty is to increase agricultural output and help living beings through that.
Vaisya should also take care of the cow with such nutrition that her milk is not only adequate for her calf, but is also available for the public. Similarly, another important duty of Vaisyas is engaging in trade, viz. to fetch articles like wheat, asafetida etc. from long distances, store them and help people by selling those articles to them. If a person has lakhs of rupees, but lives in a desert devoid of foodgrains, he cannot sustain himself just with his money. Similarly in a place where paddy is grown in plenty, one cannot live with just paddy alone without other articles. Hence trade consists in gathering articles from different places and selling them at a particular point useful to the public.
This is an important dharma for Vaisyas. They should not think that trading is sinful. If a brahmana leaves the mundane world and lives in a forest as a Sanyasi and then starts earning money, it is a sin. We should not think that traders engage in trade just for making profit. When there is hartal for a week and shops remain closed, people suffer very much without getting the necessary articles.
Hence trade is meant for common good and not for individual profit. Vaisyas should not conduct trade with profit in view, but with the thought that they are doing a duty ordained by Bhagavan and with prayerful attitude. I spoke on Go Puja today because tomorrow is the day of Go Puja and many Vaisyas are assembled here.
We should all perform dharma as instructed by Bhagavan Sri Krishna. People should also purchase articles from Asthika traders and not atheists. If you buy from atheists, the profit would be used for wrong purposes. Trading has been ordained as a special duty for Vaisyas. Hence Vaisyas should engage in the three activities ordained by Bhagavan, viz. agriculture, cow protection and trade, with devotion to Iswara and be the recipients of His Grace.

பெரியவா சரணம் !!

Surrender To God

No doubt, it is to some extent desirable, in this world, for a man to earn a name and fame and also material wealth. All these things come to some people unasked. Others do not get them, however much they may try. But these things do not attach themselves to us permanently. Either we leave them behind, or they desert us in our own life-time. Therefore, name, fame and wealth are not objectives for which we should consciously strive with all our energy. What we should aspire and strive for is a life free from sin.


There are two aspects to this freedom from sin. One is absolution from sins already committed (Paapanaasam) and the other is non-commission of sins hereafter, by purifying our mind and making it free from evil thoughts (Paapa buddhi). The former can be achieved by absolutely surrendering oneself to God, realising that He alone is our Saviour, nothing happens without His knowledge, and that whatever happens to us, good or bad, is by His will and only for our ultimate good. Resigning oneself to the dispensation of God is the essence of absolute surrender or Saranaagati. We will be free from evil thoughts hereafter only by Bhakti or devotion, that is to say, by devoting every free moment of ours to His thought or repeating His names or listening to His glories.


The claim of Christianity is that God appeared on earth to wash off our sins. It is sometimes argued that there is no corresponding conception in Hinduism. This is not correct. In the Gita, Sri Krishna has given an assurance that He will absolve from sin those who surrender themselves to Him. The Lord says


Sarva Dharmaan Parityajya Maamekam Saranam Vraja;
Aham Tvaa Sarvapaapebhyo Mokshayishyaami Maa Suchah.

Sri Krishna asks Arjuna not to grieve telling him "I will free you from all sins (Sarvapaapebhyo mokshayishyaami), if you give up all other Dharma (Sarva Dharmaan parityajya), and surrender to Me absolutely (Maamekam Saranam Vraja)". In this context, the import of the expression, Sarva Dharman Parityajya has to be understood correctly. The emphasis of the Gita is on each man performing his prescribed duties in a spirit of dedication. Therefore, the call to “give up Dharma" cannot be a message of inaction. Sri Krishna wants Arjuna, and through Arjuna all of us, to do the duties pertaining to our station in life. But what He wants us to give up is the notion that the performance of these duties will by itself lead us to the cherished goal. Sri Krishna wants us to perform our Dharma, giving up the notion that they are the be-all and end-all of life, and surrender ourselves to Him without reservation.


In the verse previous to the one I have just quoted, Sri Krishna says :

Manmanaa Bhava Madbhakto
Mayaajee Maam Namaskuru;
Maamevaishyasi Satyamte
Partijaane Priyosi Me.

When Sri Krishna says to Arjuna, "You are dear to me (priyosi me) it means that all of us are dear to Him. So, when he gives the assurance "satyam te prattijanne", we can take it as an assurance given to all of us. The assurance is that we will reach Him (Maamevaishyasi). For that purpose, we have to fix our thoughts on Him (Manmanaa Bhava), become His devotees (Madbhakto Bhava), worship Him (Madyaajee bhava) and fall at His feet (maam namaskuru).


If we analyse one's affection towards one's son or wife, we will find that it ultimately resolves itself into one's love for oneself. A man is fond of his son only so long as that son fulfils what he expects of him. Supposing that son gets married and neglects his father, the affection will turn into enmity. It follows that the affection we entertain is with a purpose and not selfless. But there is no purpose or object behind one's love for oneself. When we come to realise that the "I" we love so much is "He", our mind becomes saturated with Him. That is the significance of the expression, "Manmanaa bhava". We think of Him not for securing any favours, but because we cannot help thinking of Him, having realised that the soul within us is none else than He. When this realisation takes deep root, the mind enters the state of Avyaaja Bhakti.


We have examples of such selfless devotion to God in our Puranas. Akroora and Vidura had such Avyaaja Bhakti, Dhruva and Prahlada are examples of those who surrendered themselves to God even from their childhood. Sabari and Kannappar are examples of persons regarded as unlettered common people, on the bottom rungs of the social ladder, who are animated by an overwhelming devotion in which the consciousness of their individual entity has been completely wiped out. Parikshit is an example of one, who, within the last seven days of his life, experienced the bliss of devotion achieved in a life-time. Khatvaanga is an example of a person who got purified by concentrated devotion of three and three-fourths Naazhigas, or 90 minutes.


While Saranaagati helps to "write off" past sins, Bhakti alone will keep our minds away from sin. The heart has to be kept clean through Bhakti so that the full effect of His presence there may be realised. In the ultimate analysis, surrender and devotion are the two facets of the same thing. In this life, all householders are engaged in various occupations necessary to maintain themselves. While so engaged, their minds will be concentrating on their work. But it is during their leisure that their minds are likely to go astray. This leisure must be utilised in developing Bhakti, through various process like Naama Japa (repeating God's name), Satsanga (keeping holy company), pooja (worship), satkathasravana (listening to Lord's glory), etc. The idea is to somehow keep our thoughts engaged on God. We should have no occasion to commit sin through mind, eyes, ears and speech. Even when we make any representations in our prayers, it should be in a spirit of detachment, namely with the realisation that nothing is unknown to Him and with a feeling “Let Him do with us as He pleases". Let us, in this way, strive to pursue the path of surrender and devotion, and earn the grace of God.

" பகவான் நாமா கைகுடுப்பது போல் எந்த டாக்டரோ, மருந்தோ உதவி பண்ணாது "".
பகவான் நாமா பிழைக்கவும் வைக்கும், அதே ஸமயம் ஆயுஸ் முடியப்போகும் தருணத்தில், பகவானின் திருவடிப் பேற்றையும் ஸுலபமாக அளித்து விடும்- ஸ்ரீ மஹா பெரியவா
தர்மமே தெரியல!

ஸ்ரீ மஹா பெரியவாளை தர்ஶனம் பண்ண ஒரு பக்தர் வந்தார். கூட்டம் அதிகம் இல்லை.

"அப்பா எப்டியிருக்கார்?"...

"அப்பாக்கு ரொம்ப ஒடம்பு முடிலே பெரியவா......ப்ரக்ஞை இல்லே; அதுனால ஆஸ்பத்ரில சேத்திருக்கேன்..."

மேலே சொல்லு என்பது போல் ஸ்ரீ மஹா பெரியவா உன்னிப்பாக கேட்டார்.

"...பணம் பணம்ன்னு ஆஸ்பத்ரில பிடுங்கி எடுக்கறா.....ட்ரிப்ஸ் ஏத்தறதுக்கு பணம்; ஆக்ஸிஜன் வெக்கறதுக்கு பணம்; அதுக்கு இதுக்குன்னு நின்னா, ஒக்காந்தா பணம் ஒண்ணுதான் கேட்டுண்டே இருக்கா பெரியவா! ஏகப்பட்ட செலவாயிடுத்து..."

"அப்பாவுக்கு என்ன வயஸ்?"

"ஸதாபிஷேகம் ஆய்டுத்து"

"அவரை டிஸ்சார்ஜ் பண்ணி அழைச்சிண்டு வந்துடு! ஆத்துல ஒரு கட்டில்ல அவருக்கு ஸ்ரமம் இல்லாதபடி ஸௌகர்யமா படுக்க வை; ஜாஸ்தி சூடு இல்லாம, வெதுவெதுன்னு கஞ்சி, பால் இதுமாதிரி நீர்க்க குடு; அவரோட காதுல விழறா மாதிரி தெனோமும் விஷ்ணு ஸஹஸ்ரநாமம் சொல்லு; ஆத்துல எல்லாருமா பகவன் நாமாவை சொல்லுங்கோ; ஆத்மார்த்தமா ஸுஸ்ருஷை பண்ணு; இப்டி பண்ணினியானா .......ஒனக்கும் பணச்செலவு இல்லே! அவரும் கடைசி காலத்தை நிம்மதியா கழிப்பார்....."

மகன் மன த்ருப்தியோடு ப்ரஸாதம் பெற்றுக்கொண்டு சென்றார்.

அவர் போனதும் பக்கத்தில் இருந்தவர்களிடம் ஸ்ரீ மஹா பெரியவா சொன்னார்.....

"இப்போல்லாம் யாருக்கும் தர்மமே தெரியறதில்லே! ஒடம்புக்கு கொஞ்....சம் அஸௌகர்யம் வந்துடுத்துன்னா......ஒடனே ஆஸ்பத்ரில சேத்துடறா! வ்யாதிக்கு மருந்து வேணுந்தான்...வாஸ்தவம். ஆனா.....அருமருந்து ஒண்ணு இருக்குங்கறதே யாருக்கும் தெரியறதில்லே!....."

பகவான் நாமா கைகுடுப்பது போல் எந்த டாக்டரோ, மருந்தோ உதவி பண்ணாது. பகவான் நாமா பிழைக்கவும் வைக்கும், அதே ஸமயம் ஆயுஸ் முடியப்போகும் தருணத்தில், பகவானின் திருவடிப் பேற்றையும் ஸுலபமாக அளித்து விடும்.

எனவே, உடல் நிலை ஸரியில்லாதவர்களை குறிப்பாக வயஸான நம் பெற்றோர், தாத்தா,பாட்டி போன்றோரை, வயஸான காலத்தில் கஞ்சி குடுத்தாலும், அதை அன்போடு குடுத்து, பகவானின் நாமத்தை ஸதா கேட்கவோ, சொல்லவோ வைத்து, அவர்களை நிம்மதியாக வைத்துக் கொள்வதே கடவுளுக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்த கைங்கர்யம்.

அவர்களுக்கு விலையுயர்ந்த பரிசுகள் வேண்டாம், விதவிதமான உணவு வகைகள் வேண்டாம். உண்மையான அன்போடு ஒரு பத்து நிமிஷமாவது அவர்களுக்காக ஒதுக்கி, "ஸாப்பிட்டீர்களா? ஏதாவது வேண்டுமா?" என்று கேட்பதே அவர்களை மனஸார நம்மை வாழ்த்த வைக்கும். அவர்கள் வாழ்ந்த வீட்டை விட, அது குச்சு வீடாக இருந்தாலும் ஸரிதான், தன் மக்களை விட்டுவிட்டு, வேறு எந்த பெரிய ஆஸ்பத்ரியிலும் அவர்களால் நிம்மதியாக இருக்க முடியாது.

கஷ்ட தசையில் தெய்வத்தை நிந்தனை செஞ்ச ஒருத்தர், ஒரு சமயம் மகாபெரியவாளை தரிசனம் பண்ணறதுக்காகவந்திருந்தார். அவர் யார்? எங்கேயிருந்து வரார்ங்கறதெல்லாம்தெரியாது. ஏன்னா, அவர் மடத்துக்கு அடிக்கடி வர்ற ஆசாமி இல்லை.



அவர் பெரியவாளை தரிசனம் பண்ண வந்ததுகூட ஏதோ வேலையா மடத்துப் பக்கமா வந்தவர், அப்படியே எட்டிப் பார்த்துட்டுப் போகலாமேன்னுதான். வந்தவர் வரிசையில் நின்னார்.தன்னோட முறை வந்ததும் பெரியவாளுக்கு நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணினார்.


எல்லாம் கடனேன்னு செய்யறமாதிரிதான் இருந்தது. நமஸ்காரம் செஞ்சவர் எழுந்திருந்ததும் பெரியவா அவரைப் பார்த்து, " என்ன சுவாமியெல்லாம் திட்டறதுல இருந்து ஒருவழியா ஓய்ஞ்சுட்டே போல இருக்கு. திட்டியும் பிரயோஜனமில்லைன்னு தோணிடுத்து. அதனால தினமும் பண்ணிண்டு இருந்த பூஜையைக்கூட நிறுத்திட்டே இல்லையா?" அப்படின்னு கேட்டார்.


வந்தவருக்கு அதிர்ச்சி. அதோட 'என்னடா இது, நாம எதுவுமே சொல்லலை.ஆனா எல்லாத்தையும் பக்கத்துல இருந்து பார்த்தவர் மாதிரி பரமாசார்யா சொல்றாரே!'ன்னு ஆச்சரியம்.


"பெரியவா! குடும்பம் நடத்தறதே ரொம்ப கஷ்டமான ஜீவனமாயிடுத்து. .சரியா வேலையும் கிடைக்கிறதில்லை. பகவானை வேண்டிண்டு ஒரு .பிரயோஜனமும் இல்லைன்னு புரிஞ்சுடுத்து. மத்தவாளுக்கெல்லாம் கேட்கறதுக்கு முன்னாலேயே குடுக்கிற சுவாமி எனக்கு மட்டும் ஏன் இப்படிப் பண்றார்.?. அதான் எல்லாத்தையும் நிறுத்திட்டேன்" கண் ஓரத்துல நீர் தளும்ப தழுதழுப்பா சொன்னார் அவர்.


பரிவோட அவரைப் பார்த்தார் பரமாசார்யா.


" ஒரு விஷயம் கேட்கிறேன்.கரெக்டா யோசிச்சு சொல்லு. ஒரு ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு தினமும் எத்தனையோ நோயாளிகள்வருவா.சிலருக்கு காய்ச்சல் வந்திருக்கும். சிலருக்கு பல்வலி இவாள்லாம் அங்கே வந்திருக்கறச்சே, பாம்பு கடிச்சுடுத்துன்னு ஒருத்தரைக் கூட்டிண்டு வருவா.மாடியில் இருந்து விழுந்து நினைவு தப்பிடுத்துன்னு ஒருத்தரைத் தூக்கிண்டு வருவா. இந்தமாதிரியான சந்தர்ப்பத்துல டாக்டர்கள் எல்லாம் என்ன பண்ணுவா? யாருக்கு உடனடியா சிகிச்சை பண்ணணுமோ, யாருக்கு சட்டுன்னு சிகிச்சை பண்ணலைன்னா அப்பறம் அது பிரயோஜனப்படாதோ, யாருக்கு மரண அவஸ்தை தீரணுமோ அவாளைப் பார்க்க போயிடுவா.அதுக்காக சாதரண காய்ச்சல்னோ, தலைவலின்னோ வந்தவாளை டாக்டர்கள் எல்லாம் அலட்சியப்படுத்தறாங்கறது அர்த்தம் இல்லை. அவாளுக்கு கொஞ்சம் தாமதமா சிகிச்சை தந்துக்கலாம்.பெரிய அவஸ்தை எதுவும் வந்துடாது. ஆனா, பாம்புக்கடி பட்டவருக்கோ, விபத்துல சிக்கினவாளுக்கோ உடனடியா மருத்துவம் பார்த்தாகணும்.


சாதாரண நோயாளிகளுக்கு சிகிச்சை பண்ற டாக்டர்களுக்கே யாருக்கு எப்போ உதவணும்கறது தெரியறதுன்னா, பிறவிப்பிணிக்கே சிகிச்சை பண்ணி, அதனால் வரக்கூடிய சங்கடங்களை போக்கக்கூடிய பகவானுக்கு யாரோட பிரச்னையை உடனடியா தீர்க்கணும்னு தெரியாதா?


உனக்கு சுவாமியோட கடாட்சம் கிடைக்க கொஞ்சம் தாமதமாறதுன்னா உன்னைவிட அதிகமா அவஸ்தைப் பட்டுண்டு இருக்கிற யாருக்கோ உதவறதுக்காக சுவாமி ஓடியிருக்கார்னு அர்த்தம். அந்த வேலை முடிஞ்சதும் அவசியம் உனக்கும் அனுக்ரஹம் பண்ணுவார்.


அதுக்குள்ளே அவசரப்பட்டு, தெய்வத்தை நிந்திக்கிறதும் பூஜை புனஸ்காரங்களை நிறுத்திட்டு நாஸ்திகமா பேசறதும் தப்பு இல்லையா?"


பெரியவா சொல்லச்சொல்ல, கடவுளைப்பத்தி தப்பா நினைச்சதும் பேசினதும் தப்புன்னு புரிஞ்சண்டதுக்கு அடையாளமா அந்த ஆசாமியோட கண்ணுல இருந்து தாரைதாரையா நீர் வடிஞ்சுது. அதுவே அவரோட தவறானஎண்ணத்தை அலம்பித் தள்ளி அவரோட மனசை சுத்தப்படுத்தியிருக்கும்கறது நிச்சயம்.


மன அழுக்கைப் போக்கிக்க வழிசெஞ்ச மகானை பரிபூரணமான நம்பிக்கையோட மறுபடியும் நமஸ்காரம் செஞ்சுண்டு புறப்பட்டார் வந்தவர்.


அவருக்கு மட்டுமல்லாம அன்னிக்கு ஆசார்யா தரிசனத்துக்கு வந்தவா எல்லாருக்குமே-இது பரமாசார்யா நடத்தின பாடமாகவே அமைஞ்சதுன்னுதான்சொல்லணும்

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Periyava, The Eternal Saviour!!!

Sri Jayaraman from West Mambalam, Chennai was one of the ardent devotees of Sri Maha Periyava who had performed a lot of services to him. All his family members had limitless devotion towards Sri Maha Periyava and Kamakoti Peetham. They were a family instrumental in the donating the land for Sankara Matham at West Mambalam.

Once Maha Periyava, was in a village in Andhra Pradesh named Subba Naidu Kandriga. At that time, Jayaraman went to have darshan of Sri Maha Periyava along with his wife Pattammal, his daughter Nagalakshmi, son-in-law Vasudevan and grandson, Chandrasekaran. Periyava called the child Chandrasekaran closer to Him, and enquired affectionately about his name and studies. Periyava gave him plenty of sugar candies, saying “Keep this with you” and blessed him. He firmly held the prasadam in his hands and came out.

There was a mangrove outside and so he started playing. There was a very big step well nearby. While playing, he fell inside the well carelessly. The well was not visible from outside. There was a lot of water in the well. The child’s father, Vasu searched everywhere for the child and came towards the well. He noticed the steps to climb down the well. He saw the child’s shirt stuck to the steps.

Hastily, Vasu went down the stairs. It was his child only. He frantically lifted the child wailing loudly. All the people nearby came running. They brought the unconscious child up, took out the water from the child by keeping him on the wheel of the cart. After the child regained consciousness, they took him to Periyava and narrated what had happened. Periyava gracefully blessed him, and asked “What is there in the child’s hand?” Only then, all of them noticed the child’s clenched fist. They were surprised to see the sugar candies blessed by Periyava in his hand. What could they say about the greatness of Periyava’s prasadam! The danger which was supposed to affect the child was averted by the grace of Maha Periyava in the form of sugar candies prasadam. The child has now grown up and is in a government job and is well settled due to the blessings of Periyava.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Desire fulfilled!!!
People who surrender completely to Sri Maha Periyava and successfully complete serving Him in whichever way they desire are indeed fortunate.
One such fortunate person who accomplished this is Ghatam Vidwan Maestro Sri Vinayakram. Once he received the Sahitya Nataka academy award. He informed Periyava about this good news. Periyava was happy and asked how much would the reward amount be. Vinayakram replied, “Rs.10,000”. Periyava asked, “Is it only that much?” Vinayakram realised the answer to this only when he was about to receive the award in Delhi. The award amount increased from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 20,000 from that year.
Pradosha Venkatrama Iyer Mama told Vinayakram that since the unexpected amount had come, they could use the excess Rs. 10,000 for doing seva for Maha Periyava. Vinayakram wanted to convert the Rs. 10,000 into Rs.1 coins and perform Pada Pooja to Periyava. For that, when they were searching for Rs.1 coins, there was a devotee named Balaji who informed them about a Marwadi man who had Rs.1 coins equivalent to Rs. 10,000. He requested Balaji to bring the coins, and Balaji brought it to him in a sack. Vinayakram melted with devotion thinking about the compassion of Maha Periyava. That is the greatness of the boundless grace of Maha Periyava.

கண் கலங்கின மகா பெரியவா!

பெரியவாளை வந்து நமஸ்கரித்தாள் ஒரு வயஸான பாட்டி. அவள் கண்கள் மடையாக பெருக்கெடுத்தது. பெரியவா அவளுடைய மனஸின் வலியை உணர்ந்ததால், அவளாக அழுது ஓயட்டும் என்று பொறுமையாக இருந்தார்.

"இத்தனை வயசுக்கப்புறம், எனக்கு இப்பிடி ஒரு புத்ரசோகத்தை தாங்கிக்கணுமா? எனக்கு கொள்ளி போட வேண்டிய கொழந்தை அவசர அவசரமா போய்ச் சேந்துட்டானே! எனக்கிருந்த ஒரே ஆதரவு அவன்தானே பெரியவா!...கொழந்தை மனசுல என்னென்ன ஆசைகளோட போனானோ தெரியலியே!....." கதறினாள். கலக்கம் என்பதே இல்லாத அந்த மஹா மனஸ் இப்போது கண்களில் துளிர்த்த கண்ணீரை அடக்க முடியாமல் வெளிவிட்டது.


சன்யாசிகளின் கண்ணீர் பூமியில் விழக்கூடாது என்று சாஸ்த்ரம் சொல்லுவதால், சட்டென்று குனிந்து கண்ணீரை தன் மடியில் விழுமாறு செய்தார்.


"எனக்கு இப்போ ஒண்ணே ஒண்ணுதான் பண்ணணும். அவனோட ஆத்ம சாந்திக்காக நா...ஏதாவது ஹோமம் பண்ணி அவனை த்ருப்திப் படுத்தணும். பெரியவாதான் எனக்கு கதி. நா என்ன பண்ணட்டும்? எனக்கு ஒரு வழி காட்டுங்கோ பெரியவா....."


அமைதியாக, ஆதரவாக அவளிடம் கூறினார்.....


நீ எந்தக் கோவிலுக்கும் போவேணாம், எந்த ஹோமமும் பண்ணவேணாம். நீ கிராமத்துலேர்ந்துதானே வரே? அங்க வயல்வெளிகள்ள ஏர் உழுது, நாத்து நடற ஜனங்களை பாத்திருப்பியோன்னோ? பாவம். வேகாத வெய்யில்ல அவா படற ஸ்ரமத்தை நீ தீத்து வை! என்ன பண்ணறேன்னா....பானை நெறைய மோரை எடுத்துண்டு போய், அவாளுக்கெல்லாம் வேணுங்கறமட்டும் குடுத்து, அவாளோட தாகத்தை தணி! இது ஒண்ணுதான்...ஒம்பிள்ளையோட ஆத்மா சாந்தி அடையறதுக்கு ரொம்ப உத்தமமான வழி!.." என்று வெகு சுலபமான ஆனால் உன்னதமான பரிஹாரத்தை சொல்லிவிட்டார்.


ஒரு சாதாரண நீர்மோர் எப்பேர்ப்பட்ட சாந்தியை குடிப்பவருக்கும், கொடுப்பவருக்கும் அளித்து விடுகிறது! இந்த சின்ன தர்மம் பெரியவா வாக்கில் வந்து பெரிய தர்மமாகிவிடுகிறது.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: I thought only humans lie…

Mayavaram Sri Sivaramakrishna Sastrigal (Mayavaram Periyava) had come with tears and seemed highly disturbed. The ‘Bhagavata Saptaham’ performed by him was greatly appreciated by Sri Maha Periyava. Mayavaram Sastrigal always knew that Sri Krishna himself was listening to the ‘Bhagavatam’ and hence he would never deviate from ‘Bhagavatham’.

Such a Mahan came with tears and was speaking to the Manager, Sri Viswanatha Iyer of the Mutt…
The Manager called Sri Kannan and said, “Sastrigal has come here with a lot of stress and anxiety…Let Periyava know this and arrange for His darshan soon”.

Sri Kannan approached Periyava who was in ‘visraanthi’ (taking rest).

“Yennappa?” (What’s the matter?) asked Periyava.

Sri Mama informed about Sastrigal.

Periyava asked, “He has come by car, right?”

“Yes”.

“Ask him to wash his feet and bring him through the backdoor”.

Periyava went and sat under a ‘Nelli’ tree in the Mutt. Sastrigal came there…

Sri Sastrigal did namaskaram and said with tears, “Periyava! My son-in-law is not feeling well.

We took X-rays and it seems half the lungs are gone and doctors say only one lung is functional.
They say that he might survive for 27 days or so”.

Sri Sastrigal continued and expressed his prayer, “Even if my worst nighmare comes true, I want Periyava to bless me so that this dukham (grief) does not affect me!” (How many of us know to pray like this…only true Mahan/Vedantist can think along these lines!!!!)

He reiterated, “Even if the sareera (body) goes away, this dukham (sorrow) should not affect me”.

Later Sri Kannan recollected, “Although he said it should not affect him…he said it while he was still weeping”

Periyava asked a peculiar question back, “Why can’t the machine lie?”
Sastrigal, “We have taken 27 X-rays…all say the same thing…they have given only 20-27 days for him”.

Periyava, “You have read lots of Vedanta…it says “Bhagawan bhaya nasanaha”…pray to Him”.
Sri Sastrigal took the prasadam and left with a (relatively!) lighter heart but rushed back to the Mutt within 15 days…

Sri Kannan again recollected, “He was crying uncontrollably”.
Manager, “He cries so much…looks like his son-in-law has gone…take care of him quickly”.
Sri Kannan rushed to Periyava.

Periyava was in ‘Vishraanthi’ this time too. On hearing, “Why? Has the son-in-law gone? I am sure all rituals must have been over? Hope he has come here after all that?? He is a learned person – he knows all this”.

Sri Kannan nodded in agreement.

Later, Sri Kannan recollected, “Periyava spoke like a common person at that time”.
Same ‘Nelli’ tree, same Periyava, same Sastrigal but totally a different situation.
“Prabho! The words that came from Your mouth is true – all machines lied….doctors now say that everything is fine…My son-in-law is doing fine!!!”

Periyava smiled, “Oh! Even the machines started lying? I thought only humans lie!”
Periyava heard all the details. He gave prasadam and ‘utharavu’ to Mayavaram Sri Sivaramakrishna Sastrigal. Later, Mayavaram Periyava wrote a book where he mentioned about this incident and highlighted, “When words come out of Mahans’ mouth, anything can happen!”
What a great man he was and what a great anugraham!

Experiences with Maha Periyava: An embodiment of divinity

A Gurkha came for darshan, his face reflecting the heaviness of his heart.

"Ask him what the matter is", said Maha Periyava to the attendant.

The Gurkha said, "I have known only difficulties since I was born. But by some good fortune, I have come to Periyava who is the embodiment of divinity. I must be blessed that I am never born again".

Periyava did not say, "Aha! May it so happen! You shall never be born again!" Very softly he spoke to the man.

"I do not have the power to grant that kind of a boon. But I shall pray to Chandramouleeswara and Tripurasundari whom I worship every day that your prayers be granted".

The Gurkha felt that this was a fair enough reply. He was thrilled. He received the prasadam and said as he left, "I have no more births. This is the declaration of the Lord".

With His eyes sparkling in the brilliance of His wisdom, Periyava said, "After a long time, this was the only person who has made such a prayer!"

I remembered something I had heard. A scholar who was discoursing in the Ramayana once said, "Rama incarnated as a man. What gave him the courage to grant salvation to Jayatu? In spite of himself, his divinity manifested itself!"

The attendants who were with Sri Maha Periyava may not have understood that Periyava was none other than Lord Sankara himself, but the Gurkha did!

Meeting of Maha Periyava and Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi was touring the South in the latter half of 1927. He had heard about the Sage of Kamakoti Peetha, and wanted very much to meet him. The Sage was camping at Palghat at the time in the course of his vijaya yatra. The Mahatma went there on the 15th of October, 1927; the meeting took place on that day at Nellisseri village, Palghat, Kerala.

His, Holiness received the Mahatma in the cattle shed situated in the backyard of the camp. It was a unique experience for the Mahatma. Here was an authentic successor of Sankara, dressed in a piece of’ ochre cloth made of khadi, and seated on the floor. The Acharya too appreciated the occasion provided for getting to know, at first hand, the leader of the nation who had adopted voluntarily the mode of a simple peasant’s life. At the very first sight, the Mahatma was drawn to the Perfection Incarnate that was seated before him. The atmosphere was surcharged with spiritual silence. After a few moments the Acharya spoke in Sanskrit and invited the Mahatma to take his seat. Gandhiji offered his obeisance and sat near the Acharya. He said that as he was not used to speaking in Sanskrit, he would use Hindi if that was permitted, and that he could understand what was spoken in Sanskrit. So, the conversation took place without the need for an interpreter. The Acharya spoke in Sanskrit, and Gandhiji in Hindi.

This was purely a private interview; there were no reporters; and except for one or two attendants of the Mutt, no one was present. The conversation, which took place in the most cordial atmosphere and lasted for over an hour.

On taking leave of the Acharya, the Mahatma gave expression to the immense benefit he had derived from this unique meeting. How profoundly he was drawn to the Acharya will be evident from an incident that occurred during the interview. It was 5.30 in the evening.
Sri.C.Rajagopalachari who had accompanied the Mahatma had been waiting outside, went inside the cattle shed and reminded the Mahatma about his evening meal; as the Mahatma would not take any food after 6 pm. The Mahatma made this significant observation to Sri.C.Rajagopalachari: “The conversation I am having now with the Acharya is itself my evening meal for to day” As the Mahatma was leaving after a very fruitful interview, the Acharya gave him a pomelo fruit with his blessings. The Mahatma received it with great reverence, remarking that pomelo was a fruit which he liked best

Later in the evening, Gandhiji addressed a public meeting in Coimbatore. Some people in tbe audience were eager to know about the interview Gandhiji had had earlier with His holiness. Gandhiji replied saying that they discussed points of mutual interest, that the interview was a private one and that because of this, newspaper reporters were not present there and that there was no point in his disclosing the details of the interview.

A request was made to His Holiness in November 1968 for a message of the Seminar on the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi to the world of thought held at the University of Madras. Out of his abundant grace, Jagadguru, the preceptor of the world, sent a message in which he recalled the meeting in 1927 with Gandhiji the Father of the Nation and paid the following tribute:

“We wish to place before this Seminar one of the many things which Gandhi and I discussed when we met at Palghat, Kerala in the last Prashava year.

“Before Gandhiji arrived at Palghat there came the news of the assassination of Sraddhananda of the Arya Samaj. Referring to this incident Gandhiji remarked as follows:

“I have an apprehension in my mind that assassination of this kind would occur more often than now (in the coming years). Let not there arise in me hatred even in a small measure against the present assassin. There arises a desire in me that I should able to embrace with love even so cruel a man who commits a heinous crime, as this one, an atatayin. But it is extremely difficult to cultivate such heartfelt affection. Yet I shall make an honest attempt in this direction.”

All that we wish to point out that in this world it is very rare even to hear about such a feeling expresse

"அடுத்த தடவை கெடைக்கும்" என்ற பக்தனின் வாக்கை பகவான் சத்யமாக்கினான்!
ஒவ்வொரு ப்ரதோஷத்துக்கும் எங்கிருந்தாலும் பெரியவாளை தர்சனம் பண்ணி விடுவார் ப்ரதோஷம் மாமா. என்றைக்காவது அவர் வர சற்று தாமதமானாலோ, அல்லது
வரமுடியாமல் நிர்பந்தம் ஏற்பட்டாலோ, "ஏண்டா...ப்ரதோஷம் வந்துட்டானா?" என்று பெரியவாளே அன்போடு விஜாரிக்கும் அளவு பெரியவாளிடம் அவருக்கு அன்பு.

கடம் வித்வான் சுபாஷ் சந்தரன் மாமாவின் அத்யந்த பக்தர். ஒருநாள் வயலின் ரெட்டையர்கள் கணேஷ்,குமரேஷை மாமாவின் க்ருஹத்துக்கு அழைத்துக் கொண்டு வந்து கச்சேரி செய்ய வைத்தார் சுபாஷ் சந்தரன். மாமாவின் வீட்டில் எங்கு திரும்பினாலும் பெரியவா, பெரியவா, பெரியவாதான்!

கச்சேரி பண்ணிவிட்டு கிளம்பும்போது கணேஷ்,குமரேஷ் மாமாவிடம், "பெரியவா உருவம் பொறிச்ச காசு கெடைக்குமா மாமா?" என்று கேட்டனர். அப்போது அவரிடம்
கைவசம் காசு எதுவும் இல்லை. மாமாவுக்கு "இல்லை" என்று சொல்லிப் பழக்கமேயில்லை. எனவே "அடுத்த தடவை நீங்க ரெண்டு பேரும் வரச்சே கெடைக்கும்" என்று சொல்லிவிட்டார்.
இருந்தாலும் அவர்கள் கேட்டதை குடுக்க முடியவில்லையே என்ற உள்ளூர ரொம்ப வருந்தினார். கொஞ்சநாளில் அதை மறந்தே போய்விட்டார்.

ஒரு மாசம் கழித்து கணேஷ், குமரேஷ் இருவரும் பெரியவா முன் கச்சேரி செய்யும் பாக்யம் பெற்றார்கள். சுபாஷ் சந்திரன்தான் இதையும் ஏற்பாடு பண்ணியிருந்தார். கச்சேரி செய்தவர்களுக்கு சால்வை போர்த்தி கௌரவிப்பது மடத்தின் வழக்கம். எனவே அவர்களுக்கும் அழகான சால்வை மடத்து அதிகாரியால் போர்த்தப் பட்டது.

கூடவே இருவருக்கும் ஒரு சின்ன டப்பாவும் வழங்கப்பட்டது. திறந்து பார்த்தால்.......
பெரியவா திருவுருவம் பதித்த அழகான வெள்ளிக் காசுகள்!

பக்தன் மேல் பகவானுக்கு எத்தனை ப்ரேமை! மாமாவிடம் இதை சொன்னபோது அவரால் பெரியவாளின் அன்பை எண்ணி எண்ணி நெகிழத்தான் முடிந்தது.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Recite the following mantra 108 times!

Once a Sri Vaishnavite family had come for the darshan of Sri Maha Periyava. Even though they followed the Sri Vaishnava tradition, they had deep devotion (bhakti) towards Sri Maha Periyava and believed that He was Sakshat Sriman Narayana Swaroopam. They had come to have darshan of Periyava since the head of their family who was old was suddenly suffering from paralysis and chitta bramhai (paranoia). They had come there with the whole family.

Sri Maha Periyava asked them to be seated. He then asked for a small pot of water to be brought. Once it was brought, He put some tulsi leaves in the pot of water from the mala (garland) He was wearing. As they belonged to the Sri Vaishanavite tradition, He then advised all the family members to recite the following mantra 108 times.

Achyutananda Govinda Namoch Charana Bheshajat
Nashyanti Sakala Rogaha Satyam Satyam Vadamyaham

All the family members devotedly did as they were instructed. Periyava then sprinkled some water on the paralytic man. He then asked a strong, hefty man who was present there to give a sharp blow on the affected man’s head. Everyone hesitated and no one was willing to hit the affected man. How could they strike a sick man?

But Sri Maha Periyava’s leelas (divine plays) are amazing. Finally, a strong hefty man came forward willing to do as instructed. He clenched his fist and raised his arm to give a hard blow on the affected man’s head. The invalid man suddenly started speaking and asked, “Why are you trying to hit me?” All the family members were surprised. The motionless man speaking made all the family members extremely happy. Sri Maha Periyava’s boundless grace and the water sprinkled on him made him regain his consciousness and lost memory.

All the family members were extremely grateful and happy and thanked Sri Maha Periyava profusely and offered their prostrations and expressed their gratitude to Sri Maha Periyava.

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Give Due Importance To The Village Diety

A devotee once voiced his sorrow to Periyava. “The Siva temple in our village has not been renovated for long. Nor has the temple been sanctified by ashtabandhana. If anyone comes forward to renovate it he is faced with hurdles of all kinds. So many fear to take on the responsibility.”

Sri Maha Swamigal replied, “There is a grama devata, a female deity in your village. Let the village as a whole hold a special festival, perform abhisheka and worship the deity in an elaborate manner. Drape a new cloth on the deity and make a food-offering of sweet rice (sakkarai pongal).
You may then begin the renovation of the Siva temple.”

The devotee conveyed Periyava’s instruction to the village. The people of the village realised their lapse. Convening a meeting at once, they decided on an auspicious day for the event and held a grand festival in honour of the deity of their village. While the festivities were going on, a girl possessed of the deity’s divine spirit, shouted, “I am happy! I am happy” and fell down unconscious. The renovation of the Siva temple was completed later without a hitch. This was followed by the kumbhabhisheka, which was also a grand success.

Sri Maha Periyava had a great regard for village deities. He would say, “One has to struggle hard to meet the Collector of a town, submit one’s petition to him and get the orders issued. But it is easy to meet the Tahsildar or a subordinate official and get the orders. In case he cannot do it, he will put you on the right track. He will recommend your case.”

Love and Sorrow

The purpose of human birth is to live a life full of love for all. No joy is greater than that of loving others. Amassing wealth, acquiring property, earning fame, bedecking oneself give but transient pleasure, not any sense of fullness. The happiness that permeates our inner being is the happiness of loving others. When we love others we are not conscious of our suffering, the physical exertion we make and the money we spend: indeed the joy of loving gives us a transcendent feeling. A life in which there is no love for others is a life lived in vain.

I said that when we love a person we forget our sorrows. But one day, at last, it may be that the object of our love itself becomes the cause of great sorrow. One day the person we love leaves us forever or one day we will leave him forever. "O, he has left me forever"-"O, I am leaving him for ever": we lament in this manner. We feel disturbed when we realise that all the happiness that love gave us has at last proved to be a lie and ended in sorrow. "Is the final outcome of love then sorrow?” we ask ourselves in agitation. The greater our love for a person the more intense our grief when he or she is separated from us forever. We may then even wonder whether a life without love, a life of selfishness or a life of insensibility would be better. One leading such a life will not be affected by being separated from the object of his affection.

A selfish or self-centred man, however, gathers only sin. Is it not a life lived without joy- a life lived without a sense of fullness- a life lived in vain, a life like that of a log of wood or stone?
(The problem then is): Our love for others ends in sorrow. However, if there is no love, there is no meaning in life. What is the solution to this problem? We must create such love as will never change, love that will be enduring. The object of our love must never become separated from us, never desert us. If there were such an object and if we devoted all our love to it we would never be separated from one another- there would be eternal bliss, everlasting fullness.

To explain, we must love the One Object that never changes. What is that Object? The Paramatman. The Paramatman will never be separated from us. Even if our life departs it will dissolve in the Paramatman and become one with him. Only that love is everlasting which is dedicated to him.

The question arises: If one is to love the Paramatman that never perishes, does it mean that we must not love anyone else, that we must not love others because they will perish one day? If our love for the Supreme Being keeps growing the truth will dawn on us that there is no one or nothing other than He. All those whom we loved, all those who caused us sorrow by being separated from us, they too will seem to us the imperishable Supreme Being. We must learn to look upon the entire universe as the Paramatman and love it as such. Our love then shall never be a cause of sorrow.

Even if it be that our love is not such as to embrace the universe with all its creatures as an expression of the Paramatman, we can learn to love with ease all those great men of Atmic qualities as the Paramatman, so also our Sadguru who is full of wisdom and grace. Sufficient it would be to love them and surrender to them. Through them the Paramatman will give us his blessings. When someone we love dies, we should not grieve for him. We must console ourselves that only the body which was the disguise of the Paramatman has perished, that the one who was in that disguise has become united with the Paramatman. Our love then will be everlasting. We must first learn to have such love for Iswara and for people of goodness, for men of God. Then step by step, we must enlarge it to embrace all creation. In this way the purpose of our life will be fulfilled.
