Thank you Dr Anandi very much. Please post more of your favourite songs!
So nice to see another poster liking Anari songs! I thought it was just me being weird :D

Thank you Dr Anandi. It seems Mukesh is your favourite singer :).

Yes, Amala dear,

I like Mukesh's song, his songs are full of heart and soul... But I like Rafi and Kishore also.. I like old songs. Rafi for Shammi Kapoor songs and Kishore for Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh songs... But the Legacy of Rajkapoor and the concept and soul and songs of His films are something very very special...Un comparable as far as I am concerned.

One request to you.. if you can call me just Anandi or Anandi akka as you call Renu and Valli, I will be more happy. If you don't mind... With love Anandi
:)

My songs for you....

this song is a romantic's delight. i remember listening to it, courtesy of amin sayaani, early 50s, when we got our radio, a desi made jhankar, assembled by jay-o-phone company, a small outfit in parktown madras.

when the song fell off the charts, they were forgotten, for those were the times, when song on demand, was a luxury of those who had a gramophone and could buy the records. i guess it was a day when copyright was forced to be accepted.

it was only a few years ago, during the first burst of internet, that i could once again renew my friendship with the old shankar jaikishen songs of the 50s. this one from awaara topped the list, and my joy knew no bounds, when i could watch this song live and excerpted from the movie.

i was surprised at the fashion of bombay of those times - the capris worn by nargis, could adorn mrs k these days. rk looked every inch a lady killer, with those pencil moustache, droopy eyes and that slim figure, which did not remain such, soon afterwards.

nargis looks matured, but with a childlike innocence, which however is far from what is in her mind. if you listen to the lyrics of the song that is, which thanks to the subtitles i understood too.

just watch those few moments when rk starts to sing, and her hands starts knotting his hair - so utterly erotic, yet so fully clothed but oozing of kaama. wow!!

very touching and poignant, is the appeal of the young girl in love, to her paramour, 'in kadmon se kuchal na dena mere dil ka phool, ho mere dil ka phool' ........... 'please do not crush my heart which is delicate like a flower' ........... is that not the prayer of every young lass in love?

took a long time to understand why the indian lovers in movies appealed to the moon, to witness their love. but then that is another song :)

so here is 'dham bhar jo udhar', from awara, dedicated to anandi valli amala :) and other sj/rk/mukesh/shailendra fans in the forum and beyond!

60 years after release, still as evergreen, as the day it was composed !

ps.. for those of you who wish to emulate, rk/nargis, please note the boat does not sink ;) so... not to worry if you do not know how to swim eh!

Sowbagyavathy Amala, Greetings.

I did not learn Hindi from school. I did not take any effort to learn privately either. So, I don't know Hindi. I missed enjoying thousands of Hindi/ Urudu songs. How ever, there are some songs I liked, although I did not understand them. Most songs have some background stories too..

Once my sister lived in Arera Colony, in Bhopal. When I was studying in the school final, she was newly married, I was told to escort her when she went back after Deepavali. I hardly stayed home. I just left the newly married to their own devices and used roam around all over the place, by walking (didn't know Hindi... I didn't know where the buses were going.. so, walked very long distances!). I stayed there for a week. In one of those outings, I thought, I would watch a movie... I am posting one of the songs from that movie (actulayy, I liked few songs from that movie).

Cheers!

Greetings.

While I was a teen-ager, there was this young adult who was Rajesh Khanna's fan. Of course, he did not understand Hindi; but watched all Khanna's movies from town, carefully cut out full page advertisements of Khanna's movies from the newspapers and stuck on the door, on the tailor shop wall etc. We used to make fun of him. After watching his dedication to Khanna movies, I thought I should watch at least one movie to have a feel for Rajesh Khanna..... Amar Prem was playing in town. After watching that movie, I stopped making fun of that guy. One song from that movie... of course, I don't understand it. don't mind understanding the meaning...

Dear Kunjuppu Sir, Classic Song.... the feeling of love oozes out from this song is unexplainable...... No comparison!!!

Here is another Rajkapoor-Nargis song... So romantic yet elegant and the feeling of love it gives is tremendous....

Song from movie Chori Chori (1956) starring, Raj Kapoor, Nargis,

Thanks Kunjuppu mama and Raghy mama for the wonderful anecdotes. Anandi thanks for the songs and for dedicating it to all of us. Nachi mama you're welcome. These songs brings me memories of my childhood as well.

amala,

this is the time to tell you and 'bannu karo' joke.

my cousin from kerala, who learned book hindi, was asking someone in hindi to shut the door.

ofcourse, with our singsong accent, 'bandh kaRo', became the soft 'bannu karo'. much to the amusement of our north indian brought up cousins

hearing jesudoss singing malayalam, reminds me constantly of his malayalee roots. very much like jayaram, recently, in the recnt movie
'sabash sariyaana potti'.

did you know that in order to make it big in bombay, post rafi, doss moved to bombay and hired himself a urdu teacher, to primarily work on his accent. i dont think he found too much success in that, but blessed with a divine voice, he had his share of fame in hindi filmdom.

i enjoy listening to his malayalam songs, although i cannot succeed in wiping off that smile off my face.

kanji vellam and hindi dont mix :)

Nice joke! I agree that Yesudas does have an accent in his Hindi songs...but who doesn't? I think SPB (my most fav singer) has a little too. And Lata, Asha, Shreya and Sadhana do as well when they sing in Tamil n'est -ce pas? :)

But that Jayaram is has a serious mallu accent problem! he speaks Tamil as if its Malayalam :D

Here is more Yesudas's :)

Yesudas Hindi Hits...sunayana sunayana - YouTube

Such beautiful melody composed by Ravindra Jain (who seems to like Yesudas...). Check out Nasruddin Shah....he defo looks much better now compared to when he was younger!
