I agree with you that superstitions are not based on rational thinking; this has been discussed in this forum even before;
Let us only discuss about Dhiristi or evil eye , based on OP ,which is believed to cause harmful effects on persons.

Some Dhiristi Parthal like breaking the pumpkin on the middle of the road is definitely causing life threatening accidents to Two wheeler Drivers , which should be stopped and never to be allowed.

But other types like , in the home hanging THRISTI PILLAYAR, or doing Dristi Suthal by an elderly person, ( not against any particular person) is no way affecting outsiders and as such, although this is irrational, we can tolerate this practice to some extend.

Let us say our ancestors were super geniuses, Why did they only gave this knowledge to limited people in the world?
Next Just because there is superstations in other parts of world should we create or follow our own?...........
Dear Prasad Sir,
I hope you will follow this thread even if you don't post any more here! :ranger:

Our ancestors had to transfer knowledge ONLY by teaching IN PERSON! The did not have any internet / TB forum to spread knowledge!

Since varNAs existed and only one group was supposed to carry over knowledge to the next generation, the learned people were less.

Now coming to the superstitions:

We should not harm others even if they think ill of us. Thiruvalluvar has written a kuraL in which he says that the best way to punish

a person who did bad deeds against us is to do good to him! So, you must believe that just like 'well wishers', there exist 'ill wishers'

also in this world!

There is a temple in our village Anaimalai, where many people come to grind red chillis in a particular stone, to redirect the 'seyvinai'

done against them to the same person! It is very difficult to change people. But some harmless superstitions could be followed

by those who have belief in them.
P.S: The OP of this thread might be :scared: enough, not to ask anymore questions in our dear forum!

Mrs RR,

Sorry to say, but your relatives are crazy! What is even the point of having a better IIT rank than 36? What difference would it make to his career, except to stroke one's ego? I dont think they realize that he must have written some of the actual exams during Rahu Kalam. So much for it.

Anyway, you are the mother of a rather brilliant son. :) We would like to know what his own opinions are on this subject.

Dear Renu,

Our ancestors were not mad to create rahu kAlam for each day. The reasons are unknown to us. We can not refuse something if we don't

know the logic / truth behind it. I don't see Tuesday as a bad day or rahu kAlam as bad time. I believe in Sakthi Vinayaka and do my duty.

As P J Sir said, Tuesday flights are cheaper; we too opt it. And I gave my son's application fee for IIT JEE to my niece on a Sunday at 5 pm!

Some in my family were against it. Now they say that he might have got a better rank than 36, if I had given the fee in a good time!! :)

As long as people do NOT impose their beliefs on others and do not hurt / harm other living beings, let them have their beliefs!
P.S: I go for shopping on Tuesdays / Fridays to avoid the crazy T'nagar crowd! :bump2:

Dear Biswa Sir,

My son does not believe in good time and bad time but believes that whatever happens is for good - similar to my thinking!

Most of my in-laws are very orthodox and hence we never discuss with them the date of journey to the U S of A! They have

lots of formulas like 'mERkE soolam', 'vadakkE soolam' etc and choosing a good date will be tough! :dizzy:

pl learn to value excellence . it is not ego or anything. somebody tops in an exam and let us admire the fellow instead of quizzing him about rahukalam. it is all sweat and hardwork for the fellow and pride for the parent.

No problem Krish Sir! My son does not believe in bad time or good time. He will work hard and leave the rest to God.

Ram and I have never forced him to come always first in his class or sent him to lots of tuition classes! He was lucky

to get the Physics paper very tough that year and he is good in that subject. He admitted that if the Chemistry paper

was equally tough, his rank would have been affected! We are believers in God's grace. :hail:

No matter what how much we believe in Rahukalam....this Kalam and that Kalam..when death comes knocking its sees no time.

Anytime is a good time for death..likewise anytime should be a good time even while we are living.

there is a special temple for rahu - called rahusthalam in thirunageswaram near kumbakonam . everyday during rahukalam . huge crowds of bhakthas gather with oil , diyas and other offering to please rahu. next time I go there , I shall light some diyas for you for slighting our rahu . I end up in such places due to my wife whom I religiously escort to all and sundry locations in south of india
Death will never come near you . how can it after my prayers to rahu besides you treating lot of patients suffering from various ailments. you will live long and hit century like our kohli and tendulkar

my children are different. they had a good time during exams and I had not too good. when my son took 10th and daughter 12th same year , I tried escorting one on first day of exam and got knocked over in accident with a two wheeler and ended up with plaster for six months.with broken leg . God relieved me of escorting duties. I too should believe in gods grace

Dear Krish ji,

Actually I am a fan of Rahu.

When I was a kid and when I read about how his head was cut unfairly during the distribution of nectar I felt very sad for him.

So you see I am in no way slighting Rahu..how can I?? When I am his fan!

I like Asura Boys..I dont like Devas!
