உன்னதத்துக்கு உள்ளன மூன்று மந்திரங்கள்;

மனிதனின் பல மன அலைகள் அடங்கும்;

# 163. Be Alone, Be Hungry and Be Awake!

The three mantras for any accomplishments are:

‘Be Alone’ and don’t become one in a crowd of many sheep! Have an individuality.

‘Be Hungry’ for the sake of knowledge.

‘Be Awake’ and always be alert. Always be ready for the unexpected.

It is very important to have an individuality, a hunger for knowledge and an alert mind to progress in this materialistic world. The very same qualities are essential for progressing in the spiritual world also.

When a person is alone, his interaction with the external world can be stopped. He can calm down the thought waves of his mind and explore his inner consciousness.
If he is sincere in his efforts, he may be blessed with the ‘Atma Dharshan’ and become a ‘jivan mukthan’.

Too much of anything is too good for nothing. An excessive intake of food makes a man lazy and taamasic in nature. Too little food may not allow him to concentrate and stay focused. The right amount of food keeps him in a Saatvic mood – the best mood for spiritual evolution.

Being a house holder, a man can’t leave his house to go to a remote area to do dhyaanam, dhaarana and tapas. But he can stay awake when the whole world sleeps on, and resume his spiritual saadanaa.

Abiding by these three rules, a man can easily rise above the level of the others around him and progress steadily in his chosen path.

கல் நழுவிக் கீழே விழுவது எளிது;

தவம், தியானம் செய்வது வழக்கம்;

பண்ணின தவம் என்றுமே வீணாகாது;

நீரில் விழுந்து விடுவார் நிச்சயமாக;

# 164. Uninterrupted efforts.

It is very difficult to transport a rock uphill, but it is very easy to let it roll downhill. The same is true of all human pursuits. Going uphill or making a progress is very difficult. But falling off from the height thus attained is very easy.

People who wish to evolve spiritually, spend their live in Dhyaanam, Dhaaranaa and tapas. It is the unwritten rule that anything good is bound to meet with infinite resistance and hardships. What will happen to the man whose yoga saadhanaa is interrupted in the middle?

Will he be able to resume from the cut off point or will he have to start from the scrap once again? It is a very difficult question to be answered. Let us see how Lord Krishna replies to this question!

The spiritual saadhanaa – whether complete or incomplete – will never go in total waste. The person can pick up the thread from where he left and continue to progress further.

The saadakaa will invariably be born in a family of yogis – in atmosphere conducive to his spiritual advancement. He will keep resuming and continuing his spiritual saadhanaa till he succeeds in his efforts.

If we can’t clear a well or ditch in a single leap, we are sure to fall in it. But it is not the case with the spiritual progress. Even half successful attempts remain useful and do not get nullified, even if they are disturbed.

Even an incomplete saadhanaa is still a saadhanaa. It just gets transferred to the next birth of the person as the opening balance of his new account. With the grace of God and his sincere efforts, he is sure to succeed in his efforts.

நினைத்த நொடியில் உருவாகிடுவர்;
நினைத்த படியே பேசிப் பழகுவர்;

கிறங்குகின்றோம் நாம் வாழ் நாளெல்லாம்;

# 165.The four states of Atman.

Man spends his entire life in one of these three states of consciousness viz, Jagratha Avastha (wakeful state), Swapna Avastha (dreaming state) and Sushupthi Avastha (deep sleep state).

Sleep is similar to death in many respects. When we sleep we wind up and reside in our Atman. We lose contact with the external physical world of our existence. We stop relating with Time, Place and the Objects in the ‘real world’ where we live!

When we enter the world of dreams, we become Gods. We can create anything and everything we wish to. Think of the sky and the blue sky appears. Think of a forest and immediately a thick green forest appears.

The Sun, The Moon, The stars and everything else besides, is at our beck and call. Any location, any time or day, any object or man, any animal or bird can be created – just by thinking about it.

They appear in a fraction of a second and disappear in another fraction of the second when they are not needed anymore. They talk, walk and behave exactly as we wish them to do.

We with out limited power, limited knowledge and limited experience are able to create a world of our own – as if by Magic. The moment we come out of the dream, the entire creation vanishes! The dream which appeared to satyam when we were asleep turns out to be a mithya when we come out of it.

So when we transcendent the swapna lokam, it becomes a mithya.

What will happen if we are able to transcendent the physical world of existence? If we are able to transcendent the physical world and reach the higher state of consciousness, this world will disappear just as our dream world did.

The world we live in is the creation of God – created using His unlimited Knowledge, Power and experience.

The dream world was our creation. The physical world is his creation. When we learn to transcendent the physical world, everything will vanish and only the Absolute Reality will be seen everywhere.

There won’t be any difference due to Naama roopa bedham. This is the fourth state of consciousness of Atman, called the Thureeyam.

If we reach this state of consciousness, we will be liberated from all bond ages, all misunderstandings, all delusions and all confusion. There will be Perfect Peace, Perfect Bliss and Perfect Knowledge.

வளரச் செய்யும் ஒரு வயல் வெளி;

புலியின் பலம் கொண்டவைகள் அவை;

# 166. The Indhriyaas – The Sense Organs.

The Pancha Jnaana Indhriyaas viz Eyes, Ears, Nose, Tongue and Skin help us gain knowledge of the external world. The world is a large fertile field which abounds in the food for these Indhriyaas!

The Space contains the element of Sound in it. The Wind holds the element of Touch in it. The Light contains the elements of Form and Shape in it. The water contains the element of taste and the earth the different odors.

Human mind overflows with desires. The objects of desires can neither be counted nor be thought about exhaustively by us. The body craves for the pleasure of “Touch”; the nose craves for different fragrances; the tongue for different tastes.

The ears crave for pleasing sounds and the eyes for beautiful forms. Being torn asunder by these powerful cravings, we become powerless victims in their clasp.

A trap is set with a nice piece of snack or roasted coconut, in order to catch a rat. In the same way the five powerful traps have been set in our body in the name of these Indhriyaas. They may look as meek and mild as five rats but they are wilder and more powerful than five ferocious tigers.

A moth is attracted by a bright light. It goes for the captivating light only to get charred by it. The deer is fascinated by the music the hunter plays and gets caught by him. The fish goes for the bait in the hook and ends up in the menu of the fisherman. Elephant bulls are interested in the proximity of the elephant cows and end up becoming lifelong slaves.

If even one sense organ can cause such a calamity, what chances does a man-who is a slave of all his five senses-stand?

The very thought is enough to make a person realize the helpless situation he lives in and shed tears of despair.

The eyes drag the person in one direction, the nose in another, the ears drag him in another direction, the body and tongue in two other directions. The intellect and the mind also join the crowd to do as much damage as they can! What will be the plight of a man at the mercy of so many raging horses at the same time?

God has endowed man with everything good. But instead of making him a master of his senses, God has made man a slave to his senses.

பலவகை பட்டு இருப்பது போலவே;

பழத்தைப் பற்றிப் பறக்கையிலே;

“சாதனை சித்தர்கள்” அநேகர் அடைவர்;
“கிருபா சித்தர்கள்” அடைவர் சித்தியை;

# 167. Types of Saadhanaa.

“Variety is the spice of life”. Variety is the rule of nature. Variety is the rule in God’s creation. Everything exists in three different modes…the good, better and best or the bad, worse and worst.

The first man has to stand on the ground. The second man can stand on his shoulders and reach higher. The third man can climb onto the shoulder of the second man and reach a greater height. The same is true of human spiritual evolution in successive births of a person.

Each person has a method best suited for him. His efforts will be successful or a failure depending on the method employed by him. A bird can pluck a fruit from a tree very easily. It may also drop it very easily while trying to fly with the fruit in its beak. The speed of the venture may make it a failure.

The monkey can get the fruit even more easily than a bird. It has two palms. But while excited and jumping from one tree to another, it may drop the fruit. Similarly human beings may fail in their saadana while they get distracted and become careless.

The best and the most infallible saadana is that of an ant! It never sits idle. It never gets distracted. It never becomes careless. It never loses sight of it goal. It keeps moving towards ts goal – without any delay or distractions.

Normal men have to strive in many generations to achieve siddhi. They gain siddhi through sadana. But a few lucky persons gain siddhi through the grace / touch / initiation of a sat guru. They attain ‘Kripa Siddhi’. Many of the great poets and bhaktaas fall in this category.

But we must remember one universal truth. There is no gain without pain. Those who obtain kripa siddhi must have worked for it in their previous births relentlessly.

Remember, “Nothing comes for free!”

முதல் வகை, நடு வகை, கடை வகை;

முதலையும், மூர்க்கனும் கொண்டது விடா;

மூழ்கித் திளைத்து வாழ விழைபவர் பலர்;
முயன்று முக்தி அடைய விரும்புவார் சிலர்;

முற்றிலும் அவை நீரில் மூழ்கலாயின;

பெரிய வடிவம் எடுத்துக்கொண்டது;

கரையவும் இல்லை கனக்கவும் இல்லை;

கரைந்த பதுமையோ முக்தி அடைந்தது;

இவர்கள் முக்திக்கு முயல்வதும் இல்லை;

கேளுங்கள் தரப்படும், தட்டுங்கள் திறக்கப்படும்;

# 168. The three dolls.

There are three types of men…The uththama, the madhyama and the adhama meaning the best, the mediocre and the bad respectively.

The first two types of men are aware of the fact that they are prisoners of samsara-usually compared to a crocodile. The crocodile never loosens its grip and it never lets its prey escape!

The Adama type of people are not even aware of the fact that they are in the jaws of a giant crocodile called Samsara! Most of the people are happy to lead a life filled with sensual pleasures and comforts.

Those who want to escape the misery of samsaara may be less than one in ten thousand. The person who achieves it may be less than one in a million of such seekers.

Three dolls fell in water. They all sank to the bottom immediately. The first doll was made of salt. It got dissolved in the water and disappeared completely. The second doll absorbed water since it was made of cotton. It became very heavy and huge! The third doll was made of stone. It settled at the bottom instantly. It neither disappeared nor grew in size. It remained the same.

The doll which disappeared completely is the Mukthan who merges with God leaving no trace behind. The second doll is the Mumukshu who listens to the words of wisdom of the Acharyaas and Guru and tries for mukthi. The third doll is the loukeekan or the householder. He neither knows about Mukthi nor strives for it. He is happy to be what he is.

We know the secret of escaping from the crocodile called samsaara. Let us try for liberation.

ஒன்றாய் மறைந்து நிற்கும் நம் ஆத்மா;
இரண்டாய் இருக்கும் அறிவும், மனதும்;
மூன்றாய் இருக்கும் நமது சரீரங்கள்;

ஐந்தாய் இருக்கும் பஞ்ச பிராணன்கள்;
ஆறு ஆக இருக்கும் அறிவுத் திறன்கள்;
ஏழு ஆக இருக்கும் சப்த தாதுக்கள்;

பத்து ஆக இருக்கும் இந்த்ரியங்கள்;

இவற்றை ஒன்று ஒன்றாக விலக்கினால்;

ஆத்மாவை நன்றாக உணர்ந்திடுவோம்;

# 169. An onion and The Human body.

An onion seems to hold a sacred secret in its layers. But as we remove the layers one after another, we look foolish when there is nothing hidden in the womb of the onion. The onion resembles the human body in many respects.

There is an Atman in a human body; there are two faculties which act ceaselessly called the Mind and the Intellect. There are three sareerams viz the Sthoola sareeram, the Sookshma sareeram and the KAraNa sareeram.

There are five PrANas; six senses and seven dhaathus in a human body. There ten Indriyaas – five gnaana indriyaas and five karma Indriyaas.

When we discard them one by one saying ,”Not this! Not this!” we discover the formess Atman hidden inside the body very much similar to the secret hidden within an onion.

The Body, Mind, Intellect and Emotions in a human body consists of both Chetana and Achetana. If we can separate the Sath (permanent) from the Asath (ephemeral) just a swan separates milk from water, we can cling to the Sath and neglect the Asath.

மூன்று திருடர்கள் வழி மறித்தனர்;

கத்தியை உருவினான் முதல் திருடன்;
கட்டி போட்டான் இரண்டாம் திருடன்;

உலவிடும் ஜீவனே வழிப்போக்கன்;

# 170. The Three thieves.

A traveler was walking all by himself in a dense forest. He was carrying all his treasures bundled up along with him. Three thieves stopped him and seized his precious bundle. They wanted to kill him before making their escape.

The first thief drew out his shining dagger while the second thief bound his legs and hands. The third thief intervened, argued with them and saved the traveler’s life.

The first two thieves ran away in haste. The third thief accompanied the man till he reached his home. But in spite of repeated requests he refused to come inside the house.

He left immediately after the traveler entered his house. The man was at peace at last since he had reached his final destination.

The world is the dense forest. The traveler is the JeevAthmA. The precious bundle he carries is the Atma JnAnam. The three thieves are the three gunas – RAjasa, ThAmasa and Sathva.

The thief who drew out his dagger is the RAjasan.
The thief who tied up the traveler is the ThAmasan.
The thief who saved his life is the Sathvan.
The home is the Paramapadam / Vaikuntam / Kailaasam / the final abode which every Jeeva wants to reach.

We can enter the final abode only after getting rid of all the three guNAs. Sathvan is a good fellow and helps the jeeva, but he too is a thief and can not accompany the Jeeva is into the final abode.

உண்டு மூன்று வெவ்வேறு வகைகள்;

தேனீக்கள் உன்னதமான உத்தம வகை;

நல்லதை மட்டுமே நாடிச் செல்பவர்;
நல்லதையும், அல்லதையும் நாடுபவர்;

# 171. The three types of men.

Everything in the world can be divided into three types – the Uththamam, the Madhyamam and the Adhamam (the best, the mediocre and the bad respectively). Men can also be divided into these three types.

The honey bees spend their entire lives looking for nectar. They will settle for nothing less than the best – the nectar. If they can not find enough nectar, they would rather die than eat anything else. These form the Uththamam among the various insects.

The house fly will drink honey. It will also go and eat the garbage strewn on the road. It has no discretion between the good and the bad and will accept anything it finds. It forms the Madhyamam among the insects.

The maggots found in the rotting cow-dung can survive only there! If offered honey, they will die! These form the Adhamam among the insects.

Men are also of these three types. Those who like the honey bee always go in search of the best are the Uththmam. Those who accept the good and the bad without any discretion are the Madhyamam and the men who always go in pursuit of the bad things are the Adhamam.

Human life is a precious gift of God. We should not waste it in lowly things and pursuits. We should always aim for the good things which will help us both in worldly matters and spiritual matters.

மாறுவது மனித சரீரமும், சம்சாரமும்;

நான்கு கால் பிராணிபோல் தவழும் குழவி;
நன்றாகத் திகழும் அழகிய வாலிபம்;
ஊன்று கோலுடன் மூன்று கால் முதுமை;

விளையாட்டுப் பிள்ளையின் பருவம்;

கடல் அலைகள் ஓய்ந்தாலும் ஓயலாம்;

# 172. Sareeram and samsaaram.

Sareeram (The physical body) and samsaaram (life on earth) are the two things that keep changing continuously. They keep changing every moment of our lives. How many different stages are there in a human life! How much a person’s appearance changes with age! How many plans / projects / desires / pursuits / aims / ambitions are there in a human life!

The tiny baby crawls on all the four limb like an animal. The youth has a finely tuned body with the best mobility. The old age is bent under the wight of the day-to-day-life and the ripe old age needs some support in order to be able to stand up!

The small child spends all its time in play. The youth spends it in getting educated and then in earning a livelihood. Then the youths get married, beget children and spend their lives in bringing up their children and getting them married.

The cycle goes on and on. The waves in the ocean of samsaara never cease even for a second! How then can a Jeevaatmaa come out of this endless wave motion and reach the opposite bank safely?

Crossing the Maya and the Samsaaraa are not within the power of any man / woman! Only if God wills it to happen, it will happen! Only God can make us cross the endless ocean of samsaaraa.

The small boat which can brave the troubled waters of samsaaraa and take us across safely is the Nama Japam of the God. It looks so small and a fragile compared to the ocean to be crossed.

But have faith, catch hold of the lotus feet of your favorite God and keep chanting his name – if you really want to jump out of the endless cycle of birth and death. God and His name never fail the one who trusts in them.

“உலக மகா அதிசயம் இதுவே அறிவாய்! ;
உலகம் அனைத்துமே வியக்கும் அற்புதம்! ;

கூண்டில் சிறை உள்ளது உயிர்ப் பறவை;
கூண்டில் உள்ளன ஒன்பது வாசல்கள்;

# 173. The Greatest Mystery.

One day I asked my Sathguru, “What is the great mystery in the Universe?”

He asked me,” What will happen if you open the door of a cage in which a parrot has been kept a captive?”

I told him, “It will fly up and away – never to be caught by any man again!”

My guru replied, “Know this to be the greatest mystery in the Universe. A jivan (soul) is arrested in the cage called a human body. The cage has not just one but nine doors which are never locked up. Why then does the bird not escape from the cage and fly up and away?

Do any of you know the answer for this mystery? If you do, please reveal it for the benefit of the entire humanity!”

# 174. The Compass Needle.

A magnet attracts iron objects. In the same way God attracts all the human beings. A magnet shows us the direction North. God shows us the righteous path.

There was a time when seafarers would depend on the Sun during the day and pole star during the night to know the directions, while in the middle of a sea. They would be able to steer in the right path once they know the directions.

After the discovery of the compass needle, anyone can know the directions anytime and anywhere, just be looking a it…whether it is day or night, sunny or cloudy!

God is the wonderful magnetic needle. He always points to the direction of righteousness. If we trust Him and walk fearlessly in the path shown by Him, no harms will come to us nor any dangers nor any calamities!

எந்த உருவமோ அன்றி உடலோ இல்லாதவன்;

ஒரு காரணத்திற்காகவே அறிவோம்;

நனைக்கும் கண்ணீர்த் துளிகள் வழிந்து;

உருவங்களின் துணையையே நாடும்;

வெகு நேரம் தியானம் செய்வது கடினம்;

மூன்றுமே பலன் அளிக்கும் ஒருபோலவே;

# 175. The Uruvam and aruvam.
The visible and invisible forms)

The God who pervades the universe is in fact without a physical form. But it is difficult for us to imagine anything without a physical form!

We depend on our five sense organs to gain knowledge about the outside world. Without their help, we can grasp or understand nothing at all!

The worship of God in various forms emerged to make it easy for us to think about and meditate on God!

A form so beautiful, so pleasing and so charming that it gives the onlooker perfect peace of mind. A deep glance at one’s 'Ishta dheivam' is sure to fill any body’s mind with pleasant thoughts which express themselves as tears and roll down the cheeks.

Even the religions which do not attribute any form to God depend on other forms. They use the forms of the Son of God or the Messenger of God. It is difficult to concentrate or contemplate on emptiness or Soonya. That is why the idol worship is very useful.

Manthram, Thanthram and Yanthram are equally effective but none of them can give the pleasure a lovely form of God can give. The happiness born out of the lovely form of God is matchless!

இகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் பொறுமை கற்போம்;

நெருப்பைப் போன்றது ஆத்மா என்று அறிவோம்;

மர்மம் என்ன என்று ஆகாசத்திடம் கற்போம்;

சூரியன் போன்றதே ஆத்மா, அறிந்திடுவோம்;

தினமும் காணும் குளவியிடம் கற்போம்;

# 176. Mother Nature – The Greatest Teacher.

Nature is the best teacher to anyone who wishes to evolve spiritually.
Just by keeping our eyes and ears open, we can learn many lessons from Mother Nature.

The earth supports the person who digs deep into her womb. Let us learn the virtue of Patience from Mother Earth.

The water cools, cleanses and purifies. It lets the dirt settle down and becomes pure again. Let us learn the art of cleansing and remaining clean from water.

Fire is hidden in every object around us. Under the right conditions they will start burning. Let us learn the truth that Atman is hidden in every object around us just like the element of Fire.

Air dissipates and carries various fragrances and odors but does not get attached to any of them. Let us learn the art of doing our work without getting attached to them.

The sky pervades everywhere-inside and outside every object. Neither does it defile any of those things nor does it get defiled by them. Let us learn the secret of Nirmalathvam (purity) from Aakaasam (the sky).

The sea is so deep, so majestic and so silent, in spite of holding so many treasures in her womb. Let us learn from the sea to be silent and serene.

If we place 100 pots filled with water we can see the reflection of the Sun in each of the pots. Let us learn the truth that Atman is one but it is illuminating every jeevan just as the Sun does the water in the pots.

The Moon waxes and wanes. The sareera of any jeeva is constantly changing, growing and deteriorating. Let us learn from the Moon the fact that sareeram is not constant or permanent.

The spider spins a web from the silk produced in its body. It can also take back the web into its body. Let us learn the fact the God created the universe from His own self during Srushti and will take back everything into Himself during Pralaya.

The worm becomes a wasp, just by thinking about it. Let us learn from the wasp the fact that we become what we keep thinking about.

A python never leaves its tree. It just eats any prey that happens to walk close by. Let us learn to eat what comes our way and not go searching for fancy food stuff.

The honey bees work all day long, gather nectar and convert it to honey. They make more honey than what they may need and store it. The greedy human being kills the bees and take their honey. Let us learn from the honey bees the lesson that hoarding too much of wealth may endanger our lives.

If we remain alert and observant we can learn many valuable lessons from Mother Nature!

சான்றோர் சகவாசம் தேவை அவசியம்;

பற்று ஒழிந்தவனின் மன மயக்கம் மறையும்;

# 177. Sath Sangh.

To evolve spiritually, we need sath sangh or the association with the people of calm temperament. The association of like minded persons is very important for the person to evolve spiritually.

The world we live in is over flowing with several problems, difficulties and distractions. At times one’s mind gets distracted and one’s efforts become diluted like milk mixed with water.

A pot kept in the air becomes completely dry. But a pot inside water never becomes dry. In the same way, when the mind is immersed in the association of good people, it does not get distracted or disturbed. It remains good natured and well focused.

Even the brightest lamp needs occasional trimming of its wick!
Glowing charcoal needs occasional blowing of of air. The thick black smoke can be dissipated only by using a hand fan. The blacksmith needs a blow of bellows to melt the iron.

Sat Sang helps a person to come out of Raga and Dwesha – likes and dislikes. Persons who have come out of Raga and Dwesha come out of their delusions.

Persons out of their delusions acquire equanimity of the mind.
Persons who have acquired equanimity are fit to try for mukti
or liberation from bondage.

அழகினைக் காட்டும் மிகத் தெளிவாக;

தியாகம், பக்தி போன்றவைகளே;

மாசில்லாத மனமே அமைதி கொள்ளும்;

மாசில்லாத மனமே ஊழ் வினை ஒழிக்கும்;

# 178. The mirror of Wisdom.

A clean, beautiful and flawless mirror reflects the objects best. But when covered by dust and dirt, it can not reflect the object clearly. The Atman is also a mirror and we can see the reflection of ParamAthmA (The supreme Soul) in it.

The dust covering the Atman are the six defects of the mind viz Kaama (desire), Krodha (anger), Lobha (miserliness), MOha (delusion), Mada ego) , MAcharya (jealousy).

To clean a mirror we need a small piece of cloth. How can we clean the mirror of Atman, which in itself is elusive and invisible?

DhyAnam (meditation), Taps (penance), Soucham (cleanliness), Arjavam (sincerity and
straightforwardness), ThyAgam (self sacrifice), bhakthi (devotion) are the towels that are capable of cleaning the invisible and elusive Atman.

Now that we know how to clean the mirror and get a glimpse of the Supreme, let us try our best to get it.

# 179. They too are thieves.

Thieves are not just those persons who threaten us with sharp daggers – wearing masks! Whosoever covets things that do not belong to him is a thief.

“Parents are money spinners. All the family members have been created to serve me. I am the center of the universe. The whole world is there only for my sake!”

Thinking on these lines, many people blot off the time, talent, energy and knowledge of others – without feeling even a trace of guilt. They too are thieves!

We grow what we sow. We reap what we grow. Humaneness, honesty, sense of justice and value of values must be sown in the minds, when they are young and impressionable.

When this is not done by the parents and the elders in the family, the children grow up to become utterly selfish, indifferent and thoughtless persons. Those of us who grab more than our share of things and cheat the others are also thieves!

Many people run after money and wealth. They care nothing about honesty or dharma. They will eventually be punished by the same money – which they had chased all their lives!

Man needs money to survive in this world. But man needs values to live as a good human being. Money is a good servant but a bad master. Do not give too much importance to money, lest you be punished by the very same money – in chasing which you have spent your entire life!

# 180. The Ruchi (the taste) and VAsana (aptitude)

Tastes and smells are essential in our food items. Only then we can relish and enjoy what we eat. The taste and the smell of the food we eat linger on in our hands, mouth and mind for a long time, – even after we have finished eating!

The mental recordings of all our experiences linger on in our minds forming our Ruchi (our likes ) and VAsana ( our aptitudes). Our future births are decided by our Ruchi and VAsana we develop now.

We find that our children have an aptitude for music or for dancing or for writing or for acting. Some of these aptitudes are inexplicable – since there is no family history or connection to these arts!

The how and from where do they develop such tastes and likes?

It is because the mental recordings of their previous births follow them to their present births. We must develop good tastes and good aptitudes. They are useful not only in this birth but also in all our future births.

மந்திரங்கள் காதுகளில் உபதேசிப்பார்;
மனதில் வைராக்கியத்தை வளர்ப்பார்;
அறிவில் விவேகம்தனை விதைப்பார்;

பரமாத்மாவையும், குரு சேர்த்து வைப்பார்;

கங்கையைப் போலப் புனிதமானவர் குரு;
விந்தைகள் பலப்பல புரிய வல்லவர் குரு;
நிந்தனையால் அவர் உள்ளம் மாறுபடார்;

மூன்று வகை வைத்தியர்கள் உண்டு;

# 181. Uththama Guru (The Best Teacher)

When we are ready to receive the divine grace of the God, our sathguru appears in front of us! Even before we set out searching for him, he himself comes looking for us!

Guru is not just any ordinary human being. Guru is the personification of God Himself. We will realize very soon that Guru and God are one and the same.

Guru initiates us with a mantra. He teaches us Viveka ( the discerning power) and makes us develop our VairAgya (detachment). He helps us evolve spiritually and try for Atma dharshan( Self realization).

Guru forms a bridge between the restless jeevAtman (striving human) and his final abode the ParamAtman (the Supreme Self). Just like a kind man leading a blind man our Guru leads us in the right path towards God.

Guru is as venerable as Ganga. He does not get hurt by thoughtless comments. He shapes our thinking process.

There are three kinds of doctors – the Good, the Better and the Best – going from the bottom to the top! There are three types of gurus in the same order.

The first type of doctor diagnoses our ailment, prescribes the medicine and goes his away. The first type of Guru preaches us well but leaves us to develop and progress on our own.

The second type of doctor diagnoses, prescribes and makes us take the medicines in his presence. The second type of Guru teaches us, clears all out doubts and makes sure we progress satisfactorily.

The third and the best doctor puts the bitter medicine down our throat, using physical force if necessary. The Uththama guru does the same thing. He makes sure that we progress satisfactorily even if he has to apply pressurizing techniques.

When the grace of God and Guru descend on us, is there anything that we cannot achieve in this world? Get ready for your Guru. He will come to you only when you are really ready to receive him!

ஒரு கால் எருதினை அடிக்கும் மனிதனை;
அருவியாய்ப் பெருகிடும் கண்ணீர் வழிந்திட;

தன் கால்கள் ஒவ்வொன்றாய் இழந்து;

அளிக்கும் இடத்தில் ஒளிந்து கொள்கின்றேன்;

காமம், பொய், வெறி, கலகம், பகைமை;

182. The hideouts of Kali.

One day King Pareekshit saw a strange and moving spectacle! An ox was precariously balancing on its only leg. A cruel man was thrashing the ox harshly. A cow stood nearby shedding copious tears.

The ox was the Dharma Devan. The cow was the Mother earth and the cruel man
was the Kali purushan.

At the beginning of the Chatur yuga, the ox had all is four legs intact. During the first three yugas, viz Kritha, Treta and Dwapara, it lost three of its legs called Tapas (Penance), AchAram (Good conduct) and Dhaya (Compassion). In Kali Yuga it was left with a solitary leg called Sathyam (Truth).

The King became very angry and ordered the Kali purushan to leave his country immediately. But Kali presented the king his side of the problem.

“Oh King! It is not my fault that you find me disagreeable. I was made this way by God Himself. I too need a place to live in. So please give me some place to live and I will not disturb your citizens. I will confine myself in the allotted space.”

It looked reasonable and the King gave him five places to hide. They were wine, women, murder, gambling and gold!

Kali demanded for five more places until the king gave him these five more places viz Lust, Falsehood, Frenzy, Fury and Enmity.

Now that we know Kali’s hideouts we must avoid them very carefully – if we do not wish to be bothered by Kali.

தளபதியின் சாந்த குணம் மாறியது;
தாளமுடியாத சினம் தலைக்கு ஏறியது;

கயிற்றில் கட்டியாவது இழுத்து வர;

“உங்கள் அரசன் மண்ணை வென்றவன்;

# 183. The King and the hermit.

Alexander wanted to conquer the whole world! He wanted to gift to his teacher Aristotle five of the best things found in India. He had heard about the sadhus, saints and hermits of India – spending their entire lives in penance, on the banks of the river Ganges. He wanted to meet one of them.

He ordered the chief of his army to go with a small unit and bring to him one of those holy men.

When requested to go with them to meet Alexander, the hermit retorted, “I have no business with your king! My job is to pray and do penance here. If he wishes to see me, tell him to come here”.

The chief of the army got annoyed by this haughty reply. He became extremely angry at the suggestion that king Alexander should come to meet this semi clad pauper!

He ordered his army men to bind and drag the fellow to the presence of Alexander.
The army tried their best to physically carry the lean and starving man but they could not budge him even by an inch – however hard they tried.

The hermit laughed at their futile attempt and said, “Your king has conquered only land. But I have conquered my mind. No one can make me do anything against my wishes. No one can do anything to me against my wishes.”

The army stood aghast wondering at the power of mind over matter and the greatness of a saint over a king!

#184. குழந்தையும், ஞானியும்

குழவியும், ஞானியும் மனத்துக்கினியவர்;
ஏதும் அறியாக் குழந்தையும் இனியது;

இல்லை இவர்கள் மனங்களிலே;

மறந்து சிரிக்கும் குழந்தையே;

இன்பம் பரப்பும் சிறு குழந்தை;

ஞானி ஆவது மிகவும் கடினம்;

வையகம் வாழ்ந்து மகிழ்ந்திட;

# 184. The Innocent and the Enlightened.

A JnAni and a baby are both good natured and sweet tempered. They are not subjected to any delusions and confusions. The child is sweet since it completely innocent, ignorant and knows nothing. A JnAni is sweet since he knows everything.

Neither the baby nor the JnAni has any thoughts related to “I” and “Mine”.These two qualities bring a lot of joy in our lives.

The baby forgets its anger within seconds and smiles sweetly. The JnAni will never get angry for any reason. The one whom the whole world loves is a baby. The one whom the whole world respects is s Gnaani.

The baby wins over the love of everyone it meets. The JnAni wins over the respect of everyone he meets. The baby spreads happiness wherever it goes. The JnAni spreads knowledge wherever he goes.

For ordinary people, it is very difficult to control the mind, do penance and become a JnAni. But giving up Ego and Pride and becoming childlike in the heart is much more easier.

Let us all become lovely and lovable like young children. Let us give up pride and ego. Let us become humble and simple like the children and and live a happy and peaceful life.

#185. விண்ணோரும், மண்ணோரும்!

விண்ணோர் விழைவர், இடையராத ஆனந்தம்;

விண்ணோர் உதவியை நாடுவர் இறையிடம்;

என்றென்றும் வாழவே விரும்புவர் விண்ணோர்;

இறைவனைக் கண்டு கெஞ்சுவர் விண்ணோர்;

சுக போகங்களே வாழ்வாகும் விண்ணுலகில்;

விண்ணுலகில் அருந்தும் அமுதே உணவு;

இமையாமல் விழித்து இருப்பர் விண்ணோர்;

தானம், தவம் ஏதும் இல்லை தேவர்களுக்கு;

# 185. A Devan and A Man.

A Devan yearns for endless enjoyment.
A Man acquires endless experiences.

A Devan seeks God’s help whenever any problem arises.
A Man seeks deliverance from the cycle of birth and death.

A Devan wants to live for ever.
A man wants to get rid of births and death.

A Devan is secretly afraid of God-his master and ruler.
A Man loves and adores God as his own father and mother.

A Devan’s life is full of pleasures.
A Man’s life is full of learning.

For a Devan nectar is the food.
For a Man food is the nectar.

A Devan does not blink his eyes.
A Man blinks his eyes all the time.

A Devan does not perform Daanam or Tapas.
A Man performs Daanam and Tapas.

Parent love the child which suffers much more than the child which flourishes.
God loves a Man better than a Devan.

He has given Man a treasure called Spirituality.
A Devan does not have Spirituality or striving for it.

A man who evolves spiritually by struggling and attains Yogam (union with God) is far better than a Devan who seeks and attains constant Bogam (indulgence in pleasures
