தொடங்கினான் பிரமன் தன் படைப்புத் தொழிலை,
தேவியை ஆராதித்துப் பெற்ற சக்தியின் உதவியால்.

படைத்தான் மானுடர்களை பிரமன் மானசீகமாக;
அடையவில்லை மானுடர்கள் சற்றும் அபிவிருத்தி.

படைத்தான் மரீசி, அங்கீரசர், அத்ரி முனிவர்களை;
படைத்தான் வசிஷ்டர், புலகர், புலஸ்தியர், க்ரதுவை.

படைத்தான் சனகாதி நால்வரை, நாரத முனிவரை;
படைத்தான் ருத்திரர்களை, தக்ஷப் பிரஜாபதியை.

“எண்ணற்ற பிரஜைகளை உண்டாக்குவாய்!” என
விண்ணப்பம் செய்தான் தக்ஷப் பிரஜாபதியிடம்.

பிள்ளைகள் ஐயாயிரம் பேரைப் பெற்றான் தக்ஷன்;
பிள்ளைகளைப் பணித்தான் பிரஜா உற்பத்தி செய்திட.

நாரதர் வந்தார் தக்ஷனின் அந்தப் பிள்ளைகளிடம்,
“நன்றே நீங்கள் செய்யப் போகும் பிரஜா உற்பத்தி.

புத்திரரைப் பெற்றுப் பூமியை நிறைக்கும் முன்பு
பூமியின் பரப்பை நீங்கள் அறியவேண்டாமா?”

ஆலோசித்தனர் தக்ஷப் பிரஜாபதியின் மகன்கள்;
ஆமோதித்தனர் தக்ஷப் பிரஜாபதியின் மகன்கள்.

பிரிந்து சென்றனர் பிள்ளைகள் நான்கு திசைகளில்!
பிரஜா உற்பத்தி நின்றே போய்விட்டது அத்துடன்.

7#1a. Srushti (1)

Brahma started Srusti or Creation using the power he had acquired by worshiping Devi. He created human beings with the power of his mind but they did not show any progress later.

Brahma then created the rushis namely Marici, Angiras, Atri, Vasishta, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulasthya, Sanaka and his brothers, NArada, RudrAs and Daksha.

He commanded Daksha, “Produce a large number of praja and help in me to create.” Daksha got five thousand sons and commanded them to fill the earth with their offspring.

NArada came to them and said, “I admire your lofty aim of filling the earth with your praja. But you should know the size and area of the earth before you start procreating.”

The five thousand sons of Daksha thought for a while and agreed to NArada’s suggestion. They dispersed and went in all the various directions. With that the topic of creation came to a grinding halt.

“கற்றறிந்த பேரரிஞரே! சூத மகாமுனிவரே!
கற்றுள்ளீர் நேரடியாக வேத வியாசரிடம்!

புனிதத் தலமாகிய நைமிசாரண்யம் வந்தது
புண்ணிய பலன்களை எமக்குத் தருவதற்கு.

மனோஹரமானது இந்த வனம்; உத்தமமானது;
மாற்றிவிடும் கலி தோஷங்களை இந்த வனம்;

முனிவர்கள் யாம் வேண்டுகிறோம் உம்மை;
இனிக்கும் புராணங்களை எடுத்து இயம்பிட!

அறுசுவை உணவை விரும்புகிறான் மனிதன்;
அறிய விரும்பவில்லை அரிய புராணங்களை!

செவி இல்லாத சர்ப்பம் உணரும் இடியோசை.
செவி இருந்தும் தேவையில்லை செவிச்சுவை.

தருகின்றது நல்ல நூல் அறிவுக்கு உணவு.
தருகின்றது நல்ல சொல் செவிக்கு உணவு.

கலிக்கு அஞ்சித் தங்கி உள்ளோம் இங்கு!
கலியை வெல்லும் புராணம் கூறுவீர் நீர்!

பிறந்தவர்கள் அனைவரும் கழிக்க வேண்டும்
பிறவியில் விதிக்கப்பட்ட காலக் கெடுவினை.

காமம், தூக்கம், சோம்பல், அகந்தை மேலும்
மோசம், சூது, வேட்டை, கேளிக்கை என்றே

வீணடிக்கிறார்கள் பொழுதை அறிவிலி மனிதர்!
விரயம் செய்யும் காலத்தை உணருவதில்லை!”

1#1a. A feast for the ears!

The sages living in NaimichAraNyam heartily welcomed Sage Sootha and spoke to him thus.

“Oh learned sage! You have the good fortune of learning directly from Sage VEda VyAsa- since you are his disciple. You have come here to grace us with your presence and enrich us with your purANas.

This NaimichAraNyam is an auspicious forest. It can defeat the ill effects of Kali. That is why we all chose to live here. We have one request for you. Kindly tell us in great detail the Devi BhAgavata PurANam.

Man loves to eat food satisfying the six different taste buds, but he does not wish to hear about gods and their leelAs. Even a serpent which does not have ears feels the thunder claps.

But the man with his sense of hearing fully developed does not wish to put it to good use! A good book is feast to the intellect. A good story is a feast to the ears.

Everyone must spend his life span in doing something or the other. The foolish man spends it in lust, sleep, laziness, ego struggle, delusion, wickedness, hunting and sensual enjoyments.”

8a. சூரபத்மனின் புறப்பாடு

தாயின் அறிவுரை இனித்தது மிகவும்;
மாயை கூறியபடி வடதிசை சென்றனர்.

தம்பியுடையான் படைக்கு அஞ்சான்.
தம்பியர் இரு படைக்காவலர் ஆயினர்.

முன் நின்று நடத்தினான் படையை
முகம் சிங்கமாகிய முதல் இளவல்!

இறுதியில் நடந்து காவல் புரிந்தான்
உறுதியாக, யானைமுகன் தாரகாசுரன்.

நிலமும், வானமும் அதிர நடந்தனர்;
நிலமகள் வருந்தித் துயர்மிக உற்றாள்.

தளர்ந்தான் பாரத்தால் ஆதி சேடன்.
தளர்ந்தனர் திக்கஜ, திக்பாலகர்கள்!

சூரபத்மன் வெம்படையின் நடுவில்
சூரியன் போல் ஜொலித்து வந்தான்!

சுக்கிராச்சாரியார் காண விழைந்தார்
சூரனை, அசுரப்படையின் தலைவனை!

உயிர்களை வசப்படுத்தும் மந்திரம் ஓதி,
உயர்ந்த வான்வழி அணுகினார் அவனை.

“உம்மைக் கண்டதும் உருகுகிறது உள்ளம்,
உம் மேல் அன்பு பெருகி வளருகிறது!

நீர் யார் என அறிய விரும்புகிறேன்!”
நீர்மையுடன் வினவினான் சூரபத்மன்.

“உன் குலகுரு சுக்கிராச்சாரியன் நான்!
உன் நன்மை விழைந்து வந்துள்ளேன்.

கடின வேள்விகள் நீ செய்யும் காலை
கொடிய பகைவர் செய்வர் இடையூறு!

சிவனின் இந்த மந்திரத்தை ஓதினால்
அவன் மனம் மிக மகிழ்ச்சி அடையும்.”

காதில் ஓதினார் அரிய மந்திரத்தை;
கண நேரத்தில் மறைந்து போனார்!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

2#8a. THE MARCH TOWARDS THE NORTH.

MAyA’s four children loved her sound advice. They started marching towards the north. Simha mukhan guarded the army from the front and TAraka asuran from the rear.

The Earth trembled under the weight of the marching army. The Heaven also shook. The goddess of Earth could not bear the strain caused by the marching army. The ashta dig gaja, and the ashta dig pAlakAs had a tough and rough time too.

Soorapadman was right in the middle of the huge army – shining bright and brilliant like the morning Sun. SukrAcArya wanted to meet him.

Crossing the path of such an army is the surest way of embracing the Goddess of Death. So he chanted the mantra which would make all the people kindly disposed and then boldly went to meet Soorapadman.

Sooran’s heart melted at the sight of this strange man and he spoke kindly.” My heart melts even by looking at you. Who are you Sir?”

“I am the kulaguru of the asuras. My name is SukrAchArya. I wish to help you to get what you seek. When you perform the yAga, there will be many disturbances from your sworn enemies. I shall teach you a mantra which will please lord Siva and help you get whatever you want”

He chanted the mantra secretly in Sooran’s ears and disappeared promptly.

01. தீர்த்த மஹிமை

தீர்த்தமாட விரும்பினான் ஓரந்தணன்;
யாத்திரை நீளும் நெடுங் காலம் என்று

உற்றார் உறவினரிடம் விடை பெற்றுப்
பிற்பாடு யாத்திரை செல்வது வழக்கம்.

கனவிலே தோன்றினார் மஹாவிஷ்ணு!
“கருதுகின்றாய் அகல தீர்த்த யாத்திரை!

புஷ்கர சைலம் என்பது சேஷாச்சலம்;
புனித தீர்த்தங்கள் பதினேழு உள்ளன.

புவனமெங்கும் உள்ள தீர்த்தங்கள் – அப்
புண்ணிய தீர்த்தங்களிலும் உள்ளன!

சகல பாவங்களிலிருந்து விடுதலையும்,
சகல சம்பத்துக்களும் கிடைப்பது உறுதி.

நாடெங்கும் அலைந்து திரிய வேண்டாம்.
நாடுவாய் நீ சேஷாச்சலத்தை!” என்றார்.

பழம் நழுவிப் பாலில் விழுந்தது – மேலும்
பலன் இரண்டுக்கும் ஒரு போலானது.

பதினேழு தீர்த்தங்களிலும் சென்று நீராடிப்
பரம பாவனம் அடைந்தார் அந்த அந்தணர்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#01. The greatness of the teertam.

A Brahmin wanted to go on a theerta yAtra. It would take many months in olden days since people used to travel on foot – unless they can afford to ride on a horseback. It was customary to take leave of all one’s kith and kin before setting out on such a journey.

VishNu appeared in the dream of that Brahmin and said, “You are contemplating on a teertha yAtra. Pushkaram is the SeshAchalam . There are seventeen different teertams there. In fact they represent all the holy teertams of the whole word.

If you take a holy dip in all of them, you will be rid of all the sins committed earlier. It will bestow on you all the ashta aiswaraym. You need not travel the length and breadth of this country. Just go to SeshAhchalam!”

The Brahmin felt very happy since it would save not only his precious time but also a lot of expenditure. He went to SeshAchalam and bathed in all the seventeen teertams and got purified.

மீண்டும் பெற்றான் தக்ஷன் பல பிள்ளைகளை;
மீண்டும் பணித்தான் பிரஜா உற்பத்தி செய்ய.

மீண்டும் வந்து பேசினார் நாரதர் அவர்களிடம்;
மீண்டும் பிரிந்து சென்று விட்டனர் நாற்புறமும்.

சினம் மூண்டது தக்ஷப் பிரஜாபதிக்கு – நாரதன்
இனப் பெருக்கத்தைத் தடுக்கிறான் என்று கண்டு.

“பிள்ளைகளைப் பிரித்து அனுப்பிவிட்டாய் நீ!
பிள்ளையாக வந்து பிறப்பாய் எனக்கு நீயும்!

அனுபவிப்பாய் கர்ப்ப வாசத்தை நீயும் நாரதா!
அனுபவிப்பாய் பிறவித் துன்பத்தை நீயும் நாரதா!”

மகன்களால் நடைபெறவில்லை பிரஜா உற்பத்தி;
மகள்களைப் பெற்றான் தக்ஷன் இந்த முறை.

பெற்றாள் அறுபது பெண்களை தக்ஷன் மனைவி.
பெற்றான் புது நம்பிக்கை பிரஜைகளின் உற்பத்திக்கு.

தந்தான் பதின்மூவரைக் காசியப முனிவருக்கு;
தந்தான் பதின்மரை யமதர்மனுக்கு மனைவிகளாக.

தந்தான் இருபத்தெழுவரைச் சந்திரனுக்கு – மேலும்
தந்தான் இருவரை பிருகுவுக்கு மனைவிகளாக.

தந்தான் நால்வரை அரிஷ்ட முனிவருக்கு – மேலும்
தந்தான் நால்வரை அங்கீரசருக்கு மனைவிகளாக.

உண்டாயின அனைத்து ஜீவராசிகளும் இங்ஙனம்
உண்டாயின நானாவிதமான சிருஷ்டி இவ்வாறு.

7#1b. Srushti (2)

Daksha had many sons as before and commanded them to procreate. NArada came and spoke to them as before. Daksha’s sons dispersed in all possible directions and the creation came to a grinding halt.

Daksha lost his temper this time and cursed NArada, ” You are foiling my sincere attempts to create PrajA. You will be born as a son to me. You will live in the womb of a woman and suffer the travel through the birth canal”.

Now Daksha decided not to depend on his sons but to depend on his daughters for the creation. His wife bore him sixty beautiful daughters. He married them to different rushis and Devas thus:

He gave away thirteen daughters to Sage Kashyap; ten daughters to Yama; twenty seven daughters to the Chandran; two daughters to Sage Brugu, four daughters to Angirasa and four daughters to Sage Arishta.

All the different species of living beings were born to these sixty beautiful daughters of Daksha and their respective spouses.

முனிவர் தொடர்ந்தனர் தம் வேண்டுகோளை,
கனிவுடன் கவனித்து வந்த சூத முனிவரிடம்.

“மெத்தப் படித்தவர்கள் கழிக்கின்றனர் காலத்தை
தத்துவ விசாரத்தில், ஆராய்ச்சியில், சிந்தனையில்.

சாத்திரங்கள் பலவகையில் வேறுபட்டு நிற்பவை.
சாத்வீக குண சாத்திரங்கள் வேதாந்தம் எனப்படும்.

ராஜச குண சாத்திரங்கள் மீமாம்சம் எனப்படும்;
தாமச குண சாத்திரங்கள் தர்க்கம் எனப்படும்.

புராணங்கள் முக்குணம் உடையவை – மேலும்
புராணங்கள் ஐந்திலக்கணம் கொண்டவை ஆம்.

பாகவதம் சமம் ஆகும் நான்கு வேதங்களுக்கு.
பாகவதம் பெயர் பெற்றது ஐந்தாம் வேதம் என.

முக்தி தரவல்லது முத்தியை விழைவோருக்கு!
சித்திக்கும் போகங்கள் அதை விழைவோருக்கு!

அமிர்தம் நிகர்த்த பாகவதம் கூறவேண்டும்.
அமிர்தம் நீக்கும் நரை, திரை, மூப்பு இவற்றை.

அமிர்தம் தராது ஜீவன் முத்தியை நமக்கு!
அமிர்தம் ஒழிக்காது இப்பிறவிப் பிணியை!

பாகவதம் ஒழிக்கும் நம் உடல் தளைகளை.
பாகவதம் ஒழிக்கும் சம்சாரச் சக்கரத்தை.

யாக, யக்ஞங்கள் தரவில்லை மன சாந்தியை!
யாக யக்ஞங்கள் தரவில்லை ஜீவன் முக்தியை!

சுவர்க்க போகத்தில் முடியும் மனிதப் பிறவி!
சுவர்க்க போகம் முடியும் மனிதப் பிறவியில்!

சுழற்சியே ஆகிவிட்டது மனித வாழ்க்கையாக!
சுழற்சியில் இருந்து வர வேண்டும் வெளியே.

முக்தி தரும் பாகவதத்தைக் கூறியருளுவீர்!
சித்திக்கும் ஜீவன் முக்தி அதனால் எமக்கு!”

1#1b. The feast for the ears (2)

The sages living in NaimichAraNyam continued their request to Sage Sootha. “The learned men spend their time in their search, research and using their thinking process.

The sAstras are of three different categories. The SAtvic sAstras are called as VEdAnta. The RAjasic sAstras are called as MeemAmsa. TAmasic sAstra is called Tharkkam. PurANas have three guNams and five characteristics.

BhAgavatam is equivalent to the four VEdas. That is why it is called as the Fifth VEda. It can give liberation to one who seeks it. It can give the earthly pleasures to one who seeks them.

Nectar can keep a person young and beautiful but it can not give Jivan mukti or liberation from the cycle of SamsAra. But BhAgavatam is as sweet as nectar and can also give mukti.

We did many YAgas and Yagnas but we are yet to discover the inner peace. The yAgas give us heavenly pleasures. Once that gets exhausted we are again born on earth as human beings.

The human life ends in Swarga bhOgam and the Swarga bhOgam again ends in human life. We want to get out of this endless cycle of birth and death.
Please expatiate to us the great Devi BhAgavatam in detail”

 
KANDA PURAANAM - ASURA KAANDM

8b. வேள்விச் சாலை

வடபுலத்தை அடைந்தான் சூரபத்மன்;
கடல் போன்று அமைத்தான் யாகசாலை.

பதினாயிரம் யோசனை பரப்பு அமைத்து,
பதித்தான் மலைகளை அதன் மதிலாக!

மதிலைச் சுற்றிலும் அவுணர்கள் காவல்;
மதிலின் நான்கு திசைகளில் வாசல்கள்!

வீரமடந்தையர் வாயில்களில் காவல் புரிய,
வைரவர்யர் கூட்டம் காத்தது வேள்வியை.

ஒரு யாககுண்டம் யாகசாலையின் நடுவே;
பிற யாககுண்டங்கள் அதனைச் சுற்றிலும்.

வேள்விப் பொருட்களை நாடிய சூரபத்மன்
வேள்வியை முடித்து விட்ட தாயை எண்ண,

அரிமா, வெம்புலி, யானைகள், யாளிகள்,
கரடிகள், குதிரைகள், ஆட்டுக்கடாக்கள்,

குருதியும், ஊனும், எண்ணையும், நெய்யும்,
அரிசி, பால், தயிர், கடுகு, மிளகுடன்,

மது, மலர்கள், நெற்பொறி, கஸ்தூரி,
புது தர்ப்பை, நறுமணப் பொருட்கள்,

சமித்துக்கள், பல கொள்களங்கள் என
குமித்து விட்டாள் மாயை யாகசாலையில்!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

2#8b. The YAga SAla.

Soorapadman reached the right spot for performing the yAgam. He enclosed an area as big as an ocean. Mountains were planted as a fence around the yAga sAla. There were entrances on all the four sides. The asuras guarded the place from beyond the mountain-fence.

The entrances were guarded by the brave Female Goddesses and the YAgam was guarded by the Bhairavas. In the middle of the yAga sAla there was the main yAga kuNdam (The pit of fire for making offerings). Surrounding that several smaller kuNdams were set.

Soorapadman needed many articles for performing the yAgam. He thought of his mother MAyA who had already finished her yAgam and had obtained the power to procure whatever she desired.

She provided everything needed for the successful completion of his yAgam. She filled the yAgasAla with yAga samAgri namely lions, tigers, elephants, yALis, bears, horses, rams, meat, blood, oil, ghee, milk, curd, pepper, rice, mustard, flowers, honey, kasthoori, incenses, paddy puffs, vessels and samiththu for offering in the Agni kuNdam.

 
SRI VENKATESA PURAANAM

 02. சேஷாச்சலம்

நாரதர் சென்றார் திருப்பாற் கடலுக்கு;
நாரணனைத் தேவியருடன் தரிசித்தார்.

ஒளிர்ந்தது கௌஸ்துபம் மார்பினில்;
மிளிர்ந்தன நாரணனின் பஞ்சாயுதங்கள்.

“பூலோகத்தில் நான் திருவிளையாடல்
புரிவதற்கு ஏற்ற இடத்தைக் கூறு!” என்று

நாரணன் கேட்டான் நாரத முனிவரிடம்,
நாரதர் விண்ணப்பித்தார் நாரணனிடம்.

‘கங்க தீரத்துக்குத் தெற்கே உள்ளது
தண்டகாரண்யம் என்னும் ஓர் இடம்.

விண்ணோரும் மண்ணோரும் வந்து
தெண்டனிடத் தகுந்த இடம் ஆகும்”.

தேவருஷி சென்றதும் நாரணன் – ஆதி
சேஷனுக்கு ஆணை இட்டார் இங்கனம்.

“மலை உருக் கொள்வாய் நீ அனந்தா!
சில காலம் தங்குவேன் பூவுலகினில் !”

“மலையாக மாறுகிறேன் ஆணைப்படி.
மலை மீது எழுந்தருளும் தேவியருடன்!

இருப்பிடம் ஆகவேண்டும் என் தலை;
திருவடிகள் பதித்து நின்றிட வேண்டும்.

புண்ணிய தீர்த்தங்கள் பலவற்றையும்
என்னிடம் நீங்கள் உருவாக்க வேண்டும்!”

அருள் செய்தான் நாரணன் அவ்வாறே;
திருப் பாற்கடல் விடுத்தான் அனந்தன்.

மலையானான் தண்டகாரண்யத்தில்;
தலை ஆனது திரு வேங்கடாச்சலமாக.

உடல் ஆகிவிட்டது அகோபிலமாக;
முடிவில் வால் ஆனது ஸ்ரீ சைலமாக.

அனந்தன் பூமியில் மலை ஆனபோது;
அருந்தவம் தொடங்கியது அவன் மீது.

வேங்கடேசனாகக் காட்சி தந்தருளினார்
வேங்கடமலையில் குடிகொண்ட நாரணன்.

#02. SeshAchalam

NArada went to the Milk Ocean to have a dharshan of lord NArAyaNan and his consorts. NArAyaNan’s broad chest was adorned by the the brilliant Kousthubam and his pancha aayudhams were sparkling.

NArAyaNan asked NArada,”Please tell me a suitable spot on the earth since I want to live there during this Kali Yuga.”

NArada replied, “To the south of the banks of River Ganges, there is a very scenic place called DaNdakAraNya. The Deva and
manushya both adore that place alike. I am sure it will be the best spot for you to perform your mysterious leelAs!”

After NArada left, NArAyaNan called Aadhiseshan and told him,” Become a huge mountain on the earth in DaNadakAraNya. I want to live on the earth during Kali yuga.”

Aadhiseshan replied, “I shall become a mountain as told by you and You must live on that mountain with your Devis. My head will become SeshAchalalm and you must settle down there. You must create a number of holy teertam on that mountain.”

NArAyaNan agreed to this. Aadhiseshan left the Ocean of Milk and went down to the world. He transformed himself into a range of mountains. His head became the mountain SeshAchalam. His body became the Ahobilam and his feet the Sree Sailam.

Now all the tapasvis came to SeshAchalam to do their penance undisturbed. NArAyaNan himself came down to live on the SeshAchalam and He appears as SrinivAsan ever since then.

7#2a. சூரிய வம்சம்(1)

பிரமன் தொடங்கினான் படைப்புத் தொழிலை
புரிந்த பின் அருந்தவம் பத்தாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள்.

பெற்றான் சக்தியிடம் சிருஷ்டிக்கும் திறனை;
பெற்றான் மானசீகப் புத்திரர்களாகப் பலரை.

மரீசி உற்பத்தி செய்தார் பிரஜைகளை நன்றாக;
மரீசியிலும் சிறந்தவர் ஆனார் காச்யப முனிவர்.

தோன்றினர் அவரிடமிருந்து யக்ஷர்கள், அசுரர்கள்,
தேவர்கள், நாகங்கள், மிருகங்கள், பறவைகள்!

பிறந்தான் ஒளி பொருந்திய மகன் வைவஸ்வத மனு.
பிறந்தனர் ஒன்பது சத்புத்திரர் வைவஸ்வத மனுவுக்கு.

புகழ் பெற்றனர் பிறந்த ஒன்பது புத்திரர்களும்;
வாழ்ந்தனர் சிறந்த மனுக்களாக ஒன்பதின்மரும்.

பெற்றான் இக்ஷ்வாகு நூறு பிள்ளைகளை;
பெற்றான் நாபாகன் மகன் அம்பரீசனை;

பெற்றான் திருஷ்டன் மகன் தார்ஷ்டகனை.
பெற்றான் சர்யாதி ஆனர்த்தன், சுகன்யாவை.

ச்யவனரை மணந்துகொண்டாள் சுகன்யா.
ச்யவனர் ஒரு குருட்டு வயோதிக முனிவர்.”

குறுக்கிட்டான் ஜனமேஜய மன்னன் இப்போது;
“அருமை மகள் சுகன்யாவை சர்யாதி மன்னன்

குருட்டு முனிவனுக்கு அளித்தது ஏன்?”
திருமணம் நடைபெற என்ன காரணம்?”

7#2a. Soorya Vamsam

Brahma did severe penance for ten thousand years and obtained the necessary power to create. He produced several sons through his power from his mind.

Of these sons, Marici helped Brahma in creation. Kaasyap was even better than Marici. Yakshas, Asuras, Devas, NAgas, the Birds, the Beasts all were created by sage Kasyap with the help of his thirteen wives.

Vaivasvata Manu was born to sage Kasyap. He was blessed with nine good sons. All the nine sons became famous manus of that period.

Ikshvaku had one hundred sons. Nabaga’s son was Ambarish. Drishta’s son was DArshtagan. SharyAti had a son and a daughter named Aanarthan and Sukanya respectivley. Sukanya married a blind and old sage Chyavana.”

Now king Janamejayan interrupted the story and asked sage VyAsa, “How did king Sharyati give his young and beautiful daughter Sukanya to a blind old sage in marriage? What caused the marriage to take place?”

சூத முனிவர் கூறினார் பிற முனிவர்களிடம்,
“ஆதி பராசக்தியின் பாகவதம் கூற வேண்டும்.

இது எனக்குக் கிடைத்த பெரும் பாக்கியம்;
வேத சாச்திரங்களுக்குச் சமமானது இது.

கதைகள் நவரசம் பொருந்தி விளங்குபவை.
முதன்மையான தேவி மனதைக் கவருபவள்;

மும் மூர்த்திகளால் வணங்கப்பட உகந்தவள்;
நம் அனைவராலும் பூஜிக்கப்பட உகந்தவள் ;

வித்தை என்பவள் அவள்; ஆதிகாரணி அவள்;
முக்தி தருபவள் அவள்; எல்லாம் அறிந்தவள்;

இதயக் கமலத்தில் வீற்றிருப்பாள் என்றும்,
அறியப் படமாட்டாள் துஷ்ட ஜனங்களால்;

துறவிகளும் தொழுகின்ற பராசக்தி – தூய
அறிவைத் தர வேண்டும் நமக்கு எப்போதும்.

முக் குணங்களாக அமைந்த தன் சக்தியால்
முயற்சியின்றிப் படைக்கிறாள் சிருஷ்டியை.

காக்கின்றாள் பின் அழிக்கின்றாள் படைத்ததை!
காலத்தை வென்ற தேவியை நாம் தியானிப்போம்.

பிரமன் தோற்றுவித்தான் உலகினை என்றால்
பிரமனே தோன்றினான் விஷ்ணுவின் நாபியில்!

விஷ்ணு ஆகின்றார் பிரமனுக்கு ஓர் ஆதாரம்!
விஷ்ணுவுக்கு ஆதாரம் ஆதிசேஷன் அல்லவா?

ஆதாரப் பட்டு நிற்கும் இவர்களை எல்லாம்
முதற்கடவுள் என்று நாம் கருதுவது சரியா?”

1#2a. Aadhi ParAsakti (1)

Sage Sootha was pleased to accept the request of the other rushis to expatiate on Devi BhAgavatam. He replied to them, ”It is my good fortune that you have given me this opportunity! Devi BhAgavatam is as great as the VEdas. The stories found there are filled with the nava rasa.

The Devi is the all powerful and the supreme among all gods. She captivates the hearts of her devotees. She deserves to be worshiped by the Trimoorthi. She deserves to be meditated upon by all of us.

She is called as Knowledge and as the primordial cause of creation. She is the one who can liberate us from bondage. She is truly Omniscient.

She resides in our lotus bud shaped heart. She cannot be known by the wicked people. She reveals herself to the truly deserving devotees. May that Devi bless us all with pure and unpolluted knowledge.

She uses her power which expresses itself in three guNas to create everything we see – just like a child’s play. She protects her creation and then destroys it just as easily as She had created it.

She is one not affected by the Time Factor. Brahma is supposed to have created the world. But Brahma himself was created out of the navel of VishNu and He depends on VishNu for His existence.

VishNu on the other hand depends on Aadhiseshan for His support. How can we name any of these these gods who depend on someone else for their existence as the supreme God?”


 
KANDA PURAANAM - ASURA KAANDAM

8c. சூரனின் வீரவேள்வி

வேள்விப் பொருட்கள் கிடைத்த உடனே
வேள்வியைத் துவங்கினான் சூரபத்மன்.

வச்சிரத் தூணை நிறுவினான் நடுவில்,
வழிபட்டான் காவல் தெய்வங்களை.

மதில் நடுவில் அமைந்த பேய்களுக்கும்,
பூதங்களுக்கும் ஊன் பலி கொடுத்தான்.

நச்சு விறகிட்டுக் கொளுத்தினான் சூரன்
நச்சுத் தீயை ஆயிரத்தெட்டுக் குழிகளில்.

அவி கொடுத்தான் அக்னி குண்டத்தில்;
சிவ பிரானின் பெயரைச் சொல்லியபடி.

குறையாமல் தீயை வளர்த்துவதற்கு
தாரகனை நியமித்தான் சூரபத்மன்.

நூற்றெட்டுக் குழிகளில் பிறகு யாகம்;
நீறு பூக்காமல் பார்க்க அரிமாமுகன்.

நடுக் குழியில் தொடர்ந்தது யாகம்,
நச்சு விறகால் தீயை மூட்டினான்.

வேள்விப் பொருட்களைத் தீயிலிட,
வேள்வித் தீ விண்ணை எட்டியது.

சூரனின் வீரவேள்வியைக் கண்டு
சுரர்கள் அஞ்சி நடுங்கலாயினர்.

பதினாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் கழிந்த பின்னும்
பயன் ஒன்றும் காணவில்லை சூரன்.

அண்ணலை வரவழைக்க விரும்பினான்;
விண்ணில் சென்று நின்று கொண்டான்.

தன் உடல் சதைகளை அறுத்து எடுத்துத்
தான் வளர்த்த யாகத்தீயில் இடலானான்.

அரிய அரிய உடல் சதை வளர்வது
அரியதொரு காட்சி ஆனது அங்கே!

ஆயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் இங்ஙனம் செய்தும்
அண்ணல் அங்கே தோன்றவேயில்லை.

உயிர் துறப்பதே உத்தமம் என எண்ணி
வயிரத் தூண் மேல் குதித்தான் சூரன்.

உச்சியினின்றும் உருண்டு விழுந்தவன்
மிச்சம் இல்லாமல் எரிந்து போனான்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

2#8c. Soorapadman’s yagna.

As soon as Soorapadman got the things required to perform the yagna, he started the yagna. He set up the diamond pillar right in the middle of the enclosed place and he worshipped the guarding deities first.

He lit the fire with the poisonous wood in the 1008 yAga kuNdams. The yAgam was performed and TAraka asuran was entrusted with the job of keeping the fire glowing.

Then the 108 yAga kuNdams were lit and yAgam was performed. Simha mukhan was entrusted with the job of keeping the fire glowing.

Then the central yAga kuNdam was lit. Soorapadman made the offerings to the agni and the flames reached as high as the Heaven. The Devas were frightened to see the serious yagna being performed by Soorapadman.

Ten thousand years passed by. Still Lord Siva did not appear. Sooran made the yagna more severe. He stood in the sky and started offering parts of his own body in the yAga fire. New limbs and flesh grew as fast as he was cutting them off! It was a thrilling sight to all those present there!

One thousand years passed by and yet Lord Siva did not appear. Soorapadman decided to end his life in the yAga kuNdam. He jumped on to the diamond pillar, rolled down into the pit of fire and got burned to ashes!

03. நாராயணாத்ரி

நாராயண முனிவர் ஒரு நல்ல தபஸ்வி.
நாராயணனைத் தேடியலைந்தார் எங்கும்.

காட்சி தரவில்லை நாராயணன் அவருக்கு
மாட்சிமை பொருந்திய தவம் செய்வித்திட.

பிரம்மனைக் குறித்துத் தவம் செய்தார்.
பிரம்மன் கேட்டான்,” என்ன வரம் தேவை?”

“நாரணனைத் தரிசிக்கத் தவம் செய்தேன்.
காரணம் என்னவோ காண முடியவில்லை!

காணும் வழியினைக் கூறுங்கள் சுவாமி!
காணும் பாக்கியத்தை அருளுங்கள் சுவாமி!”

“கோனேரிக் கரையிலே சேஷாச்சலத்திலே
கோவில் கொண்டுள்ளார் ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணன்.

தவம் செய்வீர் நீர் சேஷாச்சலம் சென்று!
தவமும் பலிக்கும்; தரிசனமும் கிடைக்கும்”

சேஷாச்சலம் அடைந்தார் முனிபுங்கவர்;
செய்தார் கடும் தவம் பன்னெடுங் காலம்!

தேவியுடன் காட்சி தந்தான் நாரயணன்;
“தேவை எதுவோ கூறுங்கள்!” என்றான்.

“தரிசனம் வேண்டித் திரிந்தேன் – எங்கும்
தரிசனம் கிடைக்காமல் தவித்தேன் நான்.

பிரம்மன் கூறினார் இங்கு தவம் புரியுமாறு,
அரிய தரிசனம் பெற்றேன் உமது அருளால்!

முனிவர்களுக்கே கடினமான இத் தவத்தை
மனிதர்கள் செய்வது எங்கனம் சாத்தியம் ?

புனிதத் தலத்திலேயே தங்கி வசிப்பீர்!
மனிதர்களுக்கும் ஆசிகள் வழங்குவீர்!

என் பெயரால் விளங்க வேண்டும் – நீர்
எனக்கு தரிசனம் தந்த இந்த இடம்” என,

“நிறைவேற்றுவேன் உம் கோரிக்கையை.
நித்தியவாசம் செய்வேன் இந்தத் தலத்தில்.

தீரும் வரும் அடியவர் குறைகள் எல்லாம்!
பேரும் விளங்கும் நாராயணாத்திரி என்று!”

#03. NArAyaNAdri

Sage NArAyaNa wanted to have a dharshan of Lord NArAyaNan. He went everywhere looking for him but in vain. Lord NArAyaNan did not give his dharshan the the sage NArAyaNa.

Sage NArAyaNa did severe penance on Brahma – who became pleased with the sage and appeared in person. The sage NArAyaNa asked Brahma, “How can I get a dharshan of Lord NArAyaNan? What must I do in order to to get his dharshan?”

Brahma replied to the sage,” Lord NArAyaNan is now living on the earth in SeshAchalam as SrinivAsan. Go to SeshAchalam and do penance there. You will get a dharshan of Lord NArAyaNan.”

Sage NArAyaNa reached the SeshAchalam and did severe penance for a very long time. Lord NArAyanan appeared with his Devi and wished to grant a boon to the sage.

“I tried in vain to get your dharshan for a very long time. Brahma told me to perform penance in this place. I am glad it bore fruit and you gave me a dharshan. But I am curious to know this. If this kind of penance is difficult to be performed even by a sage like me, how will the ordinary mortals ever get your divya dharshan?

I wish you will live here forever to give your dharshan to all your devotees and bless them with whatever they wish for. This place where you have given me your dharshan must be known by my name as NArAyaNAdri in the future.”

SrinivAsan agreed to these requests. He said, “I shall live here in this Kali yuga and bless all my devotees. This place will be known as NArAyaNAdri in your honoUr from now on !”

நாலாயிரம் மனைவியர் மன்னன் சர்யாதிக்கு.
நல்ல குணவதிகள், அழகிகள் அனைவருமே.

இருந்தாள் ஒரே மகளாக அனைவருக்கும்;
இருந்தாள் சுகன்யா பிரிய இளவரசியாக.

தடாகம் ஒன்று இருந்தது தலைநகர் அருகே.
கொடிகள், செடிகள், மரங்கள் பல சூழந்தது.

மணக்கும் மலர்களும், பாடும் பறவைகளும்,
மனத்தை மயக்கின அந்த அழகிய வனத்தில்.

பார்க்கவர் இருந்தார் சமாதி நிஷ்டையில்;
காற்றையும் ஒதுக்கி, தேவியின் தியானத்தில்.

புற்றுகள் எழும்பி அசைவில்லாத முனிவரை
முற்றிலும் மூடி விட்டன காலப் போக்கில்!

விளையாடினான் மன்னன் நீரில் மனைவியரோடு ;
விளையாடினாள் சுகன்யா வனத்தில் தோழியரோடு.

நெருங்கி விட்டாள் அவள் புற்றுருவ முனிவரை;
தெரிந்தது ஒரு சிறு ஒளிக்கீற்று பொந்தின் வழியே.

நினைத்தாள் சுகன்யா மின்மினி என்று – முள்
முனையால் குத்தினாள் பொந்தின் ஒளியை.

குத்தி விட்டது முள்முனை முனிவர் கண்ணை!
ரத்தம் பெருகி வழிந்தது அந்தப் புற்றிலிருந்து!

ஓடிச் சென்று விட்டனர் அஞ்சிய சிறுமிகள்;
பாதித்தது மாயரோகம் மன்னன் பரிவாரத்தை.

வெளிவரவில்லை மலஜலம் எவருக்கும்.
வெகுவாக அவதியுற்றனர் அனைவரும்.

“பொல்லாங்கு நேர்ந்துள்ளது ஒரு உத்தமருக்கு;
சொல்லுங்கள் யார் யார் என்ன செய்தீர்கள் என்று!”

“வயோதிகரும், தபஸ்வியுமான ச்யவனமுனிவர்
வசிக்கின்றார் இந்தத் தடாகத்தின் கரையருகில்.

அபராதம் இழைத்துள்ளனர் அவருக்கு எவரோ,
அறிந்தோ அறியாமலோ!” என்றனர் அறிந்தவர்.

7#2b. Princess Sukanya (1)

King SharyAti had four thousand beautiful wives. But he had only daughter named Princess Sukanya. She was the apple of the eye of the king SaryAti and all his four thousand queens.

There was a beautiful cool pond just outside the capital city. It was surrounded by numerous flowering plants, creepers and trees laden with fruits and flowers. The birds sang beautifully and the whole place was charming and refreshing. The king and his queens used to visit the spot often just to relax.

Sage Chyavana was doing serious penance on the bank of the pond. He did not even breath air during his intense penance. Over the years many anthills had risen all around this motionless sage and covered him up completely.

The king SharyAti and his wives were doing jala-kreeda in the pond while Princess Sukanya was playing in the garden with her friends. She saw the huge anthill and became curious. She went near it and could see a spark of light inside the anthill.

She thought it was a firefly and tried to dislodge it with the tip of a sharp thorn. But lo and behold blood started flowing from the ant hill! The thorn had actually pierced one of Chyavana rushi’s eyes. The girls got frightened and ran away from the spot.

Suddenly the king and his retinue were afflicted by a strange malady. None of them could pass urine or defecate. They suffered intense pain and discomfort. The king guessed that an injury had been caused a noble person.

He asked his retinue,”Tell me honestly. One of you have caused a harm to a noble person living here. Which of you did what, when and where?”

Some of those people knew about sage Chyavana and told the king, “A noble sage lives here, lost to the world, due to his intense tapas. May be one of us have caused him a harm knowingly or unknowingly.”

“கடல் நீரில் உப்பு விரவி இருப்பதைப் போல,
உடல்களில் உயிராக வியாபிப்பவள் தேவி.

சகுண, நிர்குண உருவங்கள் உடையவள்,
சரணடைகின்றேன் நான் அந்த தேவியிடம்!

பந்தங்களை மாயையால் தருபவள் அவளே!
பந்தம் நீக்கி மோக்ஷம் தருபவளும் அவளே!”

சூதரின் மொழிகளைக் கேட்ட முனிவர்கள்
சூதரிடம் உரைத்தார்கள் தங்கள் கதையை.

கலியின் கொடுமைக்கு அஞ்சினோம் யாம்!
கலி அண்டாத ஓர் இடத்தைத் தேடினோம்!

சக்கரம் ஒன்றைத் தந்தார் பிரம்மதேவன்;
“சக்கரத்தைப் பின் பற்றிச் செல்லுங்கள்!

சிதறுண்டு சக்கரம் விழுமிடம் புனிதத் தலம்;
பதறாமல் வாழுங்கள் கலி அண்டாது அங்கே!

தவம் செய்யுங்கள் கிருத யுகம் வரையில்!”
தங்கு தடையின்றி முன்னேறியது சக்கரம்.

சிதறுண்டு விழுந்தது இந்த வனத்தில் வந்து !
சித்தர்கள், முனிவர்கள் வாழ்கின்றோம் இங்கு!

யாகம் செய்கின்றோம் தாவர வர்க்கங்கள்,
மாவால் செய்வித்த பசுக்களைக் கொண்டு,

கதை கூறுவதில் சமர்த்தர் நீர் என்றறிவோம்!
கதை கேட்பதில் யாம் சமர்த்தர் என்றறிவீர்.

தேனமுதம் பருக வேண்டும் செவிகள் குளிர,
தேவி பாகவதத்தை நீர் கூறக் கேட்டு!” என்றனர்.

1#2b. Aadhi ParAshakti (2)

Sage Sootha continued his speech,”Just as salt is dissolved in the sea water to give its taste, Devi pervades in all the physical bodies to give them the Life Energy.

She exhibits both SaguNa and NirguNa characteristics. I surrender to that Devi! She is one who puts us into bondage with her MAYA. She is one who frees us from that bondage to give us liberation”

Now the rushis of NaimichAraNyam told him their story. “We were afraid of the evil effects of Kali. We searched for a place where Kali will be powerless.

Brahma gave us a chakram (wheel). He told us to follow it closely. The place where it crumbled and fell down was the auspicious place free from Kali’s evil effects. Brahma told us live there in peace and do penance till the Kruta yugam!

The chakram crumbled down on reaching this vanam (forest). From that time all the siddha purusha and rushis live here doing penance. We perform yAga with the cows made out of flour and with the vegetable, fruits and roots.

We know that you are an expert in expatiating purANas. We too are experts in listening to them eagerly. Let us feast our ears now by listening to the stories of the nectar-like Devi BhAgavatam”

 
KANDA PURAANAM - ASURA KAANDAM

8d. அவுணர் துயரம்

அண்ணன் பாய்ந்து தீயில் விழுந்ததைக்
கண்டு உள்ளம் பதைத்தான் அரிமாமுகன்.

ரத்தக் கண்ணீர் வடித்தான் அவன் – மேலும்
மொத்தமாக யாகத்தை மறந்து விட்டான்.

துன்பக் கடலில் வீழ்ந்து அரற்றினான்;
“அன்பில்லாமல் எம்மைப் பிரிந்தீரோ?

மாயையின் மகனே! அசுரர்கள் அரசே!
தீயில் வீழ்ந்து வெந்து மாண்டீரோ?

தாயும் நீரே, தந்தையும் நீரே – எம்மைத்
தாங்கும் அண்ணனும் நீரே அன்றோ?

அஞ்சி ஒளிந்து நிற்கும் தேவரும்,
அமரர் கோனும் மனம் மகிழ்ந்திட,

அஞ்சாமல் யாகத் தீயில் குதித்து – எம்
நெஞ்சைப் பிளந்து சென்று விட்டீரே!”

யாக சாலை சோக சாலை ஆனது.
யாவரும் வேள்வி மறந்து அரற்றினர்.

அவுணர்கள் அழுது புலம்பும் ஒலி
அமிர்தமாக இனித்தது இந்திரனுக்கு.

துன்பம் தீர்ந்து இன்பம் எய்தினான்;
தன் தவத்தைத் தானே மெச்சினான்.

வெள்ளை யானை மீதேறி விண்ணில்
கொள்ளை மகிழ்ச்சியும் அடைந்தான்.

அரிமா முகனும் முடிவு செய்தான்
வீரவேள்வி செய்து உயிர் துறந்திட.

ஆயிரம் தலைகளை அரிந்து இட்டான்
அண்ணன் பாய்ந்த யாகக் குழியினில்;

மளமளவென்று அந்தத் தலைகள்
வளரலாயின மீண்டும் மீண்டும்!

தாரகனும் அரிந்து எரியில் இட்டான்
தீரத் தீர வளரும் தன் தலைகளை.

அவுணர்களும் செய்தனர் அங்ஙனமே!
அக்னியில் பாய்ந்தும் பலர் மாய்ந்தனர்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

2#8d. The sorrow of the Ausras.

Simha mukhan was overcome with sorrow when Soorapadman got burned to ashes. He shed bitter tears of sorrow and forgot all about maintaining the yagna fire.

He lamented with a broken heart,”How could you leave us thus? Have you no love for us? Oh! The valiant son of MAyA! The King of Asuras! You were everything to us. You have made the frightened Devas and the panicky Indra happy by ending your life thus.”

Everybody started crying and lamenting and the yAga SAla became a Sokha sAla! The cries of sorrow from the asuras gladdened the heart of Indra. He sat on AirAvat – his white elephant and enjoyed the sights and sad sounds coming from below.

Simha mukhan decided to end his life in the same manner. He cut off his heads one by one and threw them in the yAga fire! New heads kept growing again and again. Asuran TArakan also offered his severed heads in the YAga fire and his heads kept growing back. More asuras did the same and some even jumped into the fire and ended their lives.

 
SRI VENKATESA PURAANAM

04. ரிஷபாத்ரி

வேட்டைக்குச் செல்ல விழைந்தான் ஸ்ரீனிவாசன்;
காட்டுக்குச் செல்லத் தயாராயினர் படைவீரர்கள்.

சேனைத் தலைவன் தலைமையில் வந்தனர்,
சேஷாத்திரி வாசனைத் தொடர்ந்து வீரர்கள்.

வேட்டை ஆடினர் வெகுநேரம் மிருகங்களை;
வேட்கை மிகுந்தது நீர் பருகித் தாகம் தீர்ந்திட.

அழகிய சோலை ஒன்று தென்பட்டது அங்கு;
தழுவியது வீசிய குளிர்ந்த தென்றல் காற்று.

ரிஷபன் என்னும் அசுரனின் சோலை அது;
ரிஷபன் தடுத்தான் அதில் நுழைந்த வீரர்களை.

அரச குமாரன் என்று எண்ணினான் பகவானை;
பரந்தாமனையும் அச்சுறுத்தினான் அசுரன் ரிஷபன்!

“சம்பரா! இவனுக்குப் பதில் கூறு!” என்று சொல்ல
சம்பரன் தயாரானான் ரிஷபனுடன் போர் புரிய.

சிவ பக்தி மிகுந்தவன் அசுரன் ரிஷபன் – எனவே
தேக சக்தியும் மிகுந்தவன் அசுரன் ரிஷபன் !

நொடியில் அடித்து வீழ்த்தினான் சம்பரனை;
அடுத்து ஓடி வந்தான் ஸ்ரீனிவாசனை நோக்கி!

சரங்களைப் பொழிந்தான் சேனை நாயகன்;
சரங்கள் தடுத்தன அசுரனைச் சுவராக மாறி!

கரங்களாலே உடைத்தான் சுவற்றை அசுரன்,
பரபரவென்று முன்னேறினான் அசுரன் ரிஷபன்

அஸ்திரங்களை ஏவினான் அசுரன் ரிஷபன்;
அஸ்திரங்களை ஏவினான் சேனை நாயகன்!

#04. RishabAdri

SrinivAsan wanted to go on a hunting expedition. His soldiers got ready for the expedition. They were lead by the SenApati and he followed SrinivAsan.

They hunted down several wild animals for a long time. They all became hungry, thirsty and tired. They looked for fresh drinking water and came across a grove. The place was very cool and the breeze blowing there was very refreshing.

The grove belonged to an asuran named Rishaban. He did not like people entering into his domain as if it were a no man’s land. He stopped the group imagining that SrinivAsan was be a king and the others his soldiers.

SrinivAsan gave a command to his senApati.” Sambara! Take care of this asuran”. Sambaran got ready for a fight. Rishaban was an ardent devotee of Lord Siva. He had immense physical strength and overcame Sambaran in a minute. Then he came charging towards SrinivAsan with his anger aroused.

The senApati showered many arrows and built a wall blocking Rishaban’s way. Rishaban did not hesitate. He broke the wall of arrows with his bare hands and advanced towards his target namely SrinivAsan. Sambaran shot more and more arrows on Rishaban. So Asuran Rishaban also shot more and more arrows on Sambaran.

 7#3a. முனிவர் ச்யவனர்

துடித்தனர் அனைவரும் வயிற்று வலியினால்;
துடிப்பான இளவரசி வந்தாள் தந்தையிடம்.

“ஒளிர்ந்தன இரண்டு மின்மினிகள் புற்றினுள்ளே;
ஒளியைக் குத்தினேன் கூரிய முள்ளின் முனையால்.

கத்தியது ஒரு குரல் புற்றுக்குள் இருந்து வலியுடன்;
ரத்தம் வழிந்தது புற்றிலிருந்த பொந்து வழியாக.

அஞ்சி ஓடி வந்துவிட்டேன் அங்கிருந்து விரைந்து;
கொஞ்சமும் அறியேன் நடந்தது என்னவென்று.”

புற்றை அடைந்தான் சர்யாதி மன்னன் விரைவாக.
சற்றும் தயங்காமல் விழுந்தான் கட்டாந் தரையில்.

“அறியாச் சிறுமி செய்து விட்டாள் ஒரு பெரும் தவறு.
பொருத்தருள வேண்டும் புண்ணிய சீலரே!” என்றான்.

“கோபம் கொள்வது என்னுடைய வழக்கம் அல்ல.
பாவம் என்ன செய்தேனோ தெரியவில்லை எனக்கு.

தீவினை வந்தது தேவி கொண்ட சினத்தால் போலும்!
தீராது என் துயரம் எல்லாம் வல்ல சிவத்தினாலும்!

கண்ணிழந்த நான் என்ன செய்வேன் இனிமேல்?
கண்ணாக இருந்து யார் பணிவிடை செய்வார்?”

“சங்கடத்தை விட்டு விடுங்கள் முனிவரே – இனித்
தங்களுக்குப் பணிவிடை செய்வர் பரிசாரகர்கள்.”

“ஏவலர் புரிவர் பணிவிடைகளைக் கடமையாக;
ஏவாமல் பணி புரிவர் அன்பு மனம் கொண்டவர்.

கன்னிகா தானம் செய்துவிடு உன் மகளை எனக்கு;
இன்னல்கள் மறைந்து விடும் தேவியின் அருளால்!”

7#3a. Sage Chyavana

King SaryAti and his retinue suffered from intense stomach pain and discomfort. Princess Sukanya came running to her father and said, “I saw two fireflies inside an anthill. I tried to dislodge them with the tip of a thorn. I heard a cry of pain from inside the anthill and saw blood seeping out of a hole in the anthill. I got frightened and ran away from there immediately.”

The king rushed to the anthill and prostrated in front of it. He said ,”Oh sage! My young daughter has done you a great harm without realizing it. Kindly forgive her and pardon her sin.”

The sage replied,”It is not my custom to get angry with people. I must have committed some sin to deserve this pain. I think Devi is angry with me and is punishing me. In that case, even Siva can not save me. What shall I do now that I am blind? Who will help me in my old age?”

The king said, “I shall appoint responsible persons to take care of your every need, everyday.”

But the sage said, “The servants will work for a salary but they will not show the same interest and care shown by our own kith and kin. Give your daughter’s hand to me in marriage. All your sins will be absolved and all your discomforts will vanish!”

9a. மேன்மை பெறுதல்

சிங்கமுகன் எண்ணத்தை அறிந்து கொண்டு,
சிவபிரான் தோன்றினார் கிழப் பார்ப்பனராக.

தள்ளாத வயது; தடி பிடித்துத் தளர் நடை,
வேள்விச் சாலையை அடைந்து வினவினார்,

“வருந்துவது ஏன்? விருத்தாந்தம் கூறு!”
திருவடி தொழுது எழுந்தான் சிங்கமுகன்.

நிகழ்ந்த நிகழ்வுகளை எடுத்துக் கூறினான்.
நெகிழ்ந்த கிழவர் ஓர் உறுதி அளித்தார்,

“வேள்வித் தீயினின்றும் உம் அண்ணனை
மீள வைக்கின்றேன்! கவலை ஒழியுங்கள்!”

தேவ கங்கையை நினைத்தவுடன் அது
தேடி வந்து பதம் பணிந்து நின்றது.

அண்ணலின் ஆணைப்படி நடுக்குழியில்
அண்ணனை உயிருடன் எழுப்பித் தந்தது.

தம்பிகள் தத்தளித்தனர் மகிழ்ச்சியில்;
தம் தலைவனைக் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தனர்.

விண்ணில் நின்று மண்ணில் நிகழ்வதை
விரும்பிக் கண்ட அமரர் அஞ்சினர்!

திடீர் நிகழ்வுகளால் மருண்டு அஞ்சி
திகிலுடன் ஓடி ஒளிந்து கொண்டனர்.

முகிலின் வரவு கண்ட மயில்களாக
மகிழ்ந்தனர் அவுணர்கள் ஆர்ப்பரித்து!

முகிலின் வரவு கண்ட குயில்களாக
மூழ்கினர் அமரர்கள் ஆறாத் துயரில்!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

2#9a. SOORAPADMAN COMES BACK TO LIFE!

Singa mukhan decided to jump into the fire and sacrifice his life. Lord Siva read his thoughts and appeared there as a very old brahmin. He held a stick and walked with faltering steps.

He came to the yAga sAla and asked Singa mukhan,”Why are you so sad? Tell me everything in detail” Singa mukhan paid his respects to the old man and told him of all the recent happenings. The old brahmin took pity on him and promised,

“I shall bring back your brother alive from the fire!” The old brahmin contemplated on the Deva Ganga who promptly came down to him, paid him her obeisance, entered the yAga kuNdam and brought back Soorapadman to life!

The joy and jubilation of the asuras was complete. The Devas who were watching the sufferings of the asuras with interest now noticed the sudden and shocking resurrection of Soorapadman. They ran away in fear and took cover.

The asuras felt as happy as the peacocks which had sighted the dark rain clouds. The suras were as unhappy as the cuckoos which had sighted the dark rain clouds!

05. ரிஷபாத்ரி

அஸ்திரங்கள் பறந்தன எதிர் திசைகளில்!
அடுத்துத் தொடர்ந்தது ஒரு மாயப் போர்.

விண்ணில் எழும்பினான் அசுரன் ரிஷபன்;
எண்ணிறந்த பாணங்களைப் பொழிந்தான்!

திக்குமுக்காட வைத்தான் சேனை நாயகனை;
சக்கராயுதம் தான் வெல்வதற்கு ஒரே வழி என,

மாயப் போர் புரியும் ரிஷபன் மீது சக்கரத்தைத்
தியானித்த பின்பு எய்தான் சேனை நாயகன்.

கூரிய முனைகள் கக்கின தீப் பொறிகளை;
நேராகப் பாய்ந்து சென்றது அது ரிஷபனிடம்!

விடுத்தான் பற்பல அஸ்திரங்களை ரிஷபன்;
தடுக்க முடியவில்லை முன்னேறும் சக்கரத்தை

தீச் சுடரில் விழுந்த விட்டில் பூச்சிகள் போல
தீப் பொறியில் மறைந்தன எய்யப்பட்ட சரங்கள்.

தடுக்க முடியாது சக்கரத்தை என்றதும் அவனுக்கு
விடுபட்டது ‘வந்தவர் யார்?” என்ற வினாவின் விடை.

‘பரந்தாமனே வந்துள்ளான் எந்தன் சோலைக்கு!
பகைமை பாராட்டிப் போர் புரிகின்றேன் அறிவிலி!

தப்பவே முடியாது சக்கரத்திடமிருந்து என்றால்,
தப்பாமல் கிடைக்கும் அவன் பரம பதம் எனக்கு!’

பாதங்களில் சென்று விழுந்தான் பகவானிடம்,
“பரந்தாமா என்னே உந்தன் கருணை என் மீது!

தரிசனம் வேண்டித் தவம் கிடக்கின்றார்கள்
தேவர்களும், பிரமனும், இந்திரனும் அங்கு!

அடியேனுக்கு அளித்தாய் திவ்விய தரிசனம்;
மடியப் போகிறேன் உன் சக்கரத்தால் நான்!

வரம் ஒன்று கேட்கின்றேன் உன்னிடம் நான்;
பரம பதம் நீ அருள்வது உறுதி ஆகிவிட்டது!

ரிஷப மலையாக ஆக வேண்டும் இந்த மலை!”
ரிஷபனை இரண்டாக்கியது இறைவன் சக்கரம்.

தூய ஜோதியாக எழுந்தது அவன் ஜீவாத்மா!
நேயத்துடன் இணைந்தது திருப் பாதங்களில்!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#05. RishabAdri

Arrows flew in the opposite directions. It was followed by the MAyA warfare. Rishaban rose high in the sky. He showered arrows on the confused senApati who decided to use the chakrAyudam as the last resort. He held the divine discus and uttered the mantra before releasing it on Rishaban.

The chakram sped forward emitting sparks of fire. Rishaban shot may arrows and tried to stop the progress of chakram but it proved to be invincible. All the arrows shot by Rishaban vanished like the moths in the flame of a lamp. When Rishaban saw that the chakram was invincible, he immediately guessed correctly the identity of the person – who had entered his garden and who he had imagined to be a mere king on earth.

‘Lord Vishnu has come to my grove. Instead of offering him everything I have, I am waging a war on him, like a dumb fool. I can never escape from the chakram! But then it is sure to give me his parama padam as well.’

He fell at the feet of SrinivAsan and said, “Oh Ocean of Mercy! ParandAmA! Have you come to me in person to give your divya dharshan while the Devas, Indra and Brahma are made to wait very patiently to a glimpse of you?

I know I will surely be killed by the chakram. I am also sure that you will give me parama padam. I have one more request to make. I seek just one more boon. May this mountain be named after me!”

The chakram cut him into two. His jeeva jothi rose up as a visible light and merged with the lotus feet of SrinivAsan. Ever since then the mountain came to be known as Mount RishabAri – named after the valiant asuran Rishaban.

7#3b. சுகன்யா(2)

திகைத்து நின்று விட்டான் சர்யாதி மன்னன்!
‘நகைப்புக்கு இடமாகாதா இந்தத் திருமணம்?

கிழட்டுக் குரூபிக் குருடனுக்குத் தருவதா
அழகிய, லக்ஷணமான அரசிளங்குமரியை?’
மனம் ஒப்பவில்லை பெண்ணைத் தருவதற்கு.

மன்னன் நாடு திரும்பினான் பரிவாரங்களுடன்.
நடத்தினான் மந்திராலோசனை அமைச்சருடன்;

தடுத்தனர் பொருத்தமற்ற அந்தத் திருமணத்தை.
சுகன்யா கூறினாள் தந்தை சர்யாதி மன்னனிடம்,

“சுகம் அடையவேண்டும் சகல உபாதைகள் நீங்கி.
தவறு இழைத்தவள் நான் ஒருத்தியே என்றாலும்

தண்டனை அடைந்துள்ளீர்கள் அனைவருமே!
முனிவரின் மனம் குளிரும்படி பொறுப்பாகப்

பணிவிடைகள் செய்வேன் வருந்தற்க!” என்றாள்.
“குருவாக எண்ணிப் பணிவிடை புரியலாம்.

புருஷனாக எண்ணிப் பணி செய்வது கடினம்.
குலம், கோத்திரம், உருவம், பருவம் – உடல்

பலம் பொருத்தமாக இருப்பதும் அவசியம்.
நான் அழிந்தாலும், என் நாடே அழிந்தாலும்,

நான் தரவே மாட்டேன் உன்னை முனிவருக்கு!”

7#3b. Princess Sukanya

King SaryAti stood rooted to the spot with the shock on hearing these words uttered by the sage Chyavana. “Won’t the world laugh
at such a marriage? Surely I can’t marry my young and beautiful daughter to this blind, old, ugly sage!”

He returned to his capital city with his retinue without giving his daughter to the sage Chyavana. He consulted his wise ministers. They all stood firm by his opinion and would not accept such a strange wedding.

Sukanya told her father, ”I was the only one who committed a grave sin but the punishment has been given to all of us. You must all become free of this malady. I will serve the sage so well that he will be really happy and pleased.”

King SaryAti said, “Serving the sage as if he were your guru is possible but it will be impossible to marry him and serve him as your husband. For a successful marriage the bride and the groom must be well matched in their race, Gothram, figure, form, beauty, age and physical strength.

I do not care if I get destroyed or even if my entire country goes to the dogs, but I will never get my daughter married to that blind old sage!”

1#4a. குருவிகளின் பாசம்

வசித்து வந்தார் வியாசர் சரஸ்வதி தீரத்தில்;
வியந்தார் ஊர்க்குருவிகள் குலாவுவது கண்டு.

முட்டையிட்டது கருத்தரித்த பெண் குருவி.
முட்டையிலிருந்து வெளிவந்தன குஞ்சுகள்.

கொஞ்சி மகிழ்ந்தன குருவிகள் குஞ்சுகளை;
கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக ஊட்டின உணவை.

அணைத்துக் கொஞ்சின; ஆசை முத்தமிட்டன;
ஆரவாரம் செய்து மகிழ்ந்தன பிரேம பாசத்தால்!

‘வெறும் குருவிகள் தானே!’ என்று எண்ணாமல்
பரவசம் அடைந்தார் வியாசர் அதைக் கண்டு.

‘புத்திரனுடைய சரீரத்தைத் தழுவிக் கொள்வதே
உத்தமமான சுகம் என்று உரைப்பது உண்மையே!

புத்திரன் இல்லாதவன் அடைவான் துர்கதி.
பத்திரன் உள்ளவனே அடைவான் நற்கதி.

புத்திரப் பேறு இல்லாது போனால் வாழ்வில்
எத்தகைய இன்பமும் இல்லை!’ என்றுணர்ந்தார்.

பேராவல் கொண்டார் சத் புத்திரனை அடைய.
மேருமலைச் சிகரம் அடைந்தார் தவம் புரிய.

யாரைக் குறித்துத் தவம் புரிய வேண்டும்?
விரைவில் மகிழ்வடையும் ருத்திரனையா?

பிரமதேவனையா? விஷ்ணு மூர்த்தியையா?
சூரியன், இந்திரன், வருணன், கணேசனையா?

வந்தார் நாரதர் மஹதி வீணையை மீட்டியபடி!
வரவேற்று உபசரித்தார் வியாசர் தேவரிஷியை.

1#4a. The family of sparrows

SAge VyAsa lived on the bank of river Saraswati. He watched a pair of sparrows in amorous play. He was fascinated by the love they expressed for each other.

The female bird laid eggs in due course and then they hatched. Tiny chicks emerged from those eggs. The parent birds embraced and kissed the tiny helpless chicks. They brought food and fed the chicks – little by little with great affection.

VyAsa could not get the sparrows out of his mind. He realized that life becomes full and meaningful only with the arrival of one’s children. The greatest pleasure on earth was certainly embracing one’s own children.

He knew that those without a son are destined to suffer in hell. Only those who had produced worthy sons can escape the horrors of hell. He wished for a good son more than anything else.

He decided to penance on the mount MEru seeking the boon of a worthy son. He reached mount MEru. He was not sure on which God to meditate upon.

Should it be Rudran – the god who could be pleased very easily. Should it be Brahma or VishnNu or The Sun God or Indra or VaruNa or GaNesha? He was unable to make up his mind.

Just then NArada came to visit him. VyAsa welcomed NArada heartily.

9b. இறைவனின் தரிசனம்

மகிழ்ந்து நின்றான் சூரன் வாழ்த்தொலியில்!
மாற்றிக் கொண்டார் சிவன் தம் உருவை!

விடை ஏறிய பிரானாகச் சிவன் காட்சிதர,
மடை திறந்த வெள்ளம் போல மகிழ்வுடன்

நிலத்தில் விழுந்து பலமுறை வணங்கிப்
புளகம் அடைந்தான் அசுரன் சூரபத்மன்.

“நெடுங்காலம் என்னையே எண்ணிக்
கடும் தவம் செய்யக் காரணம் என்ன?”

“அண்டங்கள் அனைத்தினுக்கும் அரச பதவி;
அண்டங்களை ஆள்வதற்கு ஓர் ஆட்சி உருளை;

நினைத்தவுடன் எங்கும் செல்ல ஓர் ஊர்தி;
தினையளவும் அழிவில்லாத வஜ்ஜிர காயம்;

திருமாலையும், தேவரையும் வெல்லும் திறன்;
பெருமை தரும் ஆற்றலும், ஆயுதங்களும்!”

என்று அனைத்தையுமே சூரபத்மன் வேண்ட,
கண்ணுதற் பிரான் அவற்றைத் தந்தருளினார்.

“ஆயிரம் கோடி அண்டங்களில் நீ இனி
ஆயிரத்தெட்டு அண்டங்களை ஆளுவாய்!

குற்றம் இல்லாத உடல் வலிமையுடன் நீ
நூற்றெட்டு யுகங்கள் ஆட்சி புரிவாய்!”

நினைத்த மாத்திரத்தில் விரைந்து சென்று
அனைத்துலகும் சேரவல்ல இந்திர ஞாலம்;

அண்டங்களை ஆள ஆட்சி உருளை;
அனைவருக்கும் முதல்வன் ஆகும் மேன்மை;

தேவர்களை வெல்லும் சீரிய வலிமை;
தெய்வப் படைக்கலங்களுடன் தந்தார்;

எந்நாளும் அழியாத வஜ்ஜிர காயமும்,
என்றும் தோற்காத நால்வகைப் படையும்;

தம்பியருக்கும் அளித்தார் ஓர் உறுதியும்,
“எம் சக்தியாலன்றி அழிவில்லை உமக்கு!”

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

2#9b. Lord Siva’s Dharshan.

Soorapadman was hailed by his brothers and his army. Lord Siva changed his disguised form and appeared as Lord Siva seated on His Nandhi vAhanam. Sooran’s joy knew no bounds. He paid his respect by prostrating on the ground several times.

Siva spoke, “You have performed a severe penance for a very long time. What do you seek from me now?” Soorapadman replied, “The ruler-ship of all the worlds, A chariot which will take me wherever I want to go, A body which will not get old or decay, The ability to conquer VishNu and Indra and possession of all the divine weapons. I seek all these from you Lord!”

Siva replied, “Of the ten thousand million worlds, you may rule 1008 worlds for 108 eons. You will have a body as strong as a diamond. Chariot Indra JnAlam will transport you to wherever you wish to go. You are the foremost among all living beings! You have become invincible even to the Devas!”

He also gave all the divine weapons to Sooran. He gave the four siblings a rare promise, “There is no death or danger to you except by my own shakti!”

06. அஞ்சனாத்ரி

திரேதா யுகத்தில் கடும் தவம் செய்தான்,
பரமசிவனைக் குறித்துக் கேசரி என்பவன்.

“வேண்டும் வரம் யாது?” என்று கேட்க
வேண்டினான் கேசரி இந்த வரத்தினை.

“எவராலும் வெல்ல முடியாத பலத்துடன்,
என்றும் வாழ்ந்திருக்கும் மகன் வேண்டும்!”

“புதல்வி தான் பிறப்பாள் உமக்கு – அந்தப்
புதல்விக்குப் பிறப்பான் நீர் கோரும் மகன்!”

அஞ்சனை அவதரித்தாள் அந்தக் கேசரிக்கு;
அருமை பெருமையாக அவளை வளர்த்தான்.

வானரத் தலைவன் விரும்பிக் கேட்டதால்,
வானரனுக்கு அவளை மணம் செய்வித்தான்.

குறை இருந்தது புத்திரன் இல்லையென்று!
குறத்தி போல் வந்தாள் தருமதேவதை அங்கே.

“வேங்கடம் சென்று தவம் செய்தால் – மனம்
வேண்டியபடிப் பிறப்பான் நல்ல மகன்!” என

அனுமதி பெற்றாள் தன் கணவனிடமிருந்து,
அடைந்தாள் வேங்கட மலையைச் சென்று.

ஆகாய கங்கையில் நீராடினாள் – பின்பு
அமர்ந்தாள் அஞ்சனை அரும் தவம் புரிந்திட.

காற்றை மட்டுமே உட்கொண்டாள் – அவள்
மற்றவற்றைத் துறந்தாள் முற்றிலுமாக!

அஞ்சனை தவத்துக்கு இரங்கினான் வாயு;
கொஞ்சமேனும் தானும் உதவ நினைத்தான்.

கனிந்த பழத்தைக் கரத்தில் கொண்டு போட,
இனிய பிரசாதமாக அதைத் தினமும் புசிப்பாள்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#06. AnjanA Devi

In TretA Yuga, Kesari did severe penance on Lord Siva. He wished for a son who would be both invincible and a Chiranjeevi ( an immortal). Siva blessed him with a daughter instead and said, “Your daughter will bear the valiant and immortal son you have wished for!”

AnjanA Devi was born to Kesari and soon she grew up into a pretty maiden. The king of VAnara (King of the Monkeys) loved AnjanA Devi and married her with the permission of Kesari. But they did not have any children.

Dharma Devata came to AnjanA Devi, transformed into a fortune teller. She told AnjanA Devi,”If you go and do penance on the Venkata Giri, you will surely get a son you desire to have.”

AnjanA Devi took the permission of her husband and went to Venkata Giri. She bathed in the AakAsha Ganga and sat in deep penance. She breathed air and would neither eat nor drink anything at all.

VAyu Devan took pity on her and decided to help her in his own way. He would drop a ripe fruit in her hands. She would consider it as the divine prasAdam and eat it. This was happening everyday.
