1#4c. Naaradaa’s reply (2)

“Brahma continued to Vishnu,” I consider you as the ruler of the world and as the creator of the world. I consider you as the supreme among gods and the savior of all sincere devotees.

You are capable of every action. You can destroy as well as protect. The sun and moon obey your commands. The wind becomes gentle or violent on your command. Agni burns and clouds rain by your command.

But you are meditating on another power. I am your son. I am your foremost devotee. You must tell me the truth and put an end to my contusion”

“Listen to me carefully now oh Brahma! I shall reveal to you who is the supreme among the gods. Everyone thinks that we the Trinity are responsible for the generation, protection and destruction of the creation.

But for anything to be done we need two requirements – the ability to do it and the knowledge to do it.

You create the universe. To help you in creation you are bestowed with Raajasic energy.

I as protector of the creation am endowed with Saatvic energy.

As the god of destruction Siva is bestowed with the Taamasic energy.“

7#28d. துர்க்கி

சென்றான் துர்முகாசுரன் போர்க்களம்;
சென்றான் போரின் பதினோராம் நாள்.

சென்றான் சிவப்பு நிற ஆடைகளுடன் ;
செந்நிற மாலையும், சந்தனமும் அணிந்து.

வென்றான் சக்தியர் கூட்டத்தைப் போரினில்;
சென்றான் ரத்தத்தில் ஏறி சதாக்ஷிக்கு எதிரே.

செய்தான் யுத்தம் இரண்டு ஜாமக் காலம்;
எய்தான் அம்புகளை தேவி சதாக்ஷியின் மீது.

எய்தாள் தேவி ஐநூறு பாணங்களை அவன் மீது ;
எய்தாள் தேவி நான்கு பாணங்களைக் குதிரை மீது.

எய்தாள் தேவி ஒரு பாணம் சாரதியின் மீது;
எய்தாள் தேவி ஒரு பாணம் கொடியின் மீது ;

எய்தாள் இரண்டு பாணங்களைக் கண்கள் மீது.
எய்தாள் ஐந்து பாணங்களை அவன் மார்பில்.

எய்தாள் தேவி இரண்டு பாணங்களைத் தோளில்.
எய்த பாணங்களில் மாய்ந்து வீழ்ந்தான் அசுரன்.

வெளிப்பட்டது ஜோதி அவன் உடலில் இருந்து;
ஒளி வந்து கலந்தது தேவியின் திருமேனியுடன்.

அளித்தாள் தேவி வேதங்களை அந்தணருக்கு.
அளித்தாள் ஆசிகளை அங்கு அனைவருக்கும்,

"பயம் தேவையில்லை இனி உங்கள் எவருக்கும்!
அபயம் அளிப்பேன் என்னை நம்பி வழிபட்டால்.

அகற்றுவேன் வரும் ஆபத்துக்களை வருமுன்பே.
புகலுங்கள் என் நாமத்தை சித்த சுத்தியுடன் கூட.

துர்முகனைப் போரில் வென்றதால் பெறுவேன்
துர்க்கீ என்னும் பட்டப் பெயரை இனிமேல் நான்."

மறைந்தருளினாள் சதாக்ஷி அங்கிருந்து - மனக்
குறைகள் மறையும் இதனைக் கேட்பவர்களுக்கு.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

7#28d. Durgee

On the eleventh day Durmukha asuran went to the war field dressed in red color, wearing red flower garlands and smearing red colored sandal paste. He defeated the Shakthi Devis who had emerged out of Sataakshi.

He went on his chariot near to Sataakshi. They fought for some time. He shot many arrows at Devi Sataakshi. Now Devi shot five hundred arrows on the asuran.

She shot four arrows on his horse, one arrow on his sarathi, one aRrow on the flagstaff, two arrows on his eyes, five arrows on his chest and two arrows on his shoulders.

Durmakha asuran fell dead. A jyoti or light emerged from his body and went and merged with Devi Sataakshi's body.

Devi gave back the Vedaas to the Brahmins. She gave her bleSsings to everyone. She gave abhayam (fearlessness) to everyone and said,

"No need to fear anything or anyone in the future. I will protect you if you worship me with faith and sradhdha. I shall be called as Durgee since I vanquished Durmukha asuran in a war."

She then disappeared from there.


Whosoever listens to this with faith and devotion will have all his/her worries removed by Devi Sataakshi's grace.

திருவிளையாடல்கள். முதற்பகுதி. மதுரைக்காண்டம்.

9. ஏழு கடலை அழைத்தது.

சோமசுந்தர பாண்டியனின் நல்லாட்சி
நேமம் தவறாமல் நடந்து வருகையில்;
ஞானிகள், முனிவர், அறவாழி அந்தணர்
ஞானக் கடலினைக் காண வருவதுண்டு!

பெருமானைக் கண்ட பின்னர் கௌதமர்
காணவிழைந்தார் காஞ்சனமாலையை;
பெருமாட்டி தவ சீலரிடம் வினவினாள்,
“பேண வேண்டியவை எவை பிறப்பறுக்க?”

“இறைவியின் தாயார் ஆவீர் நீவீர்!
இறைவனின் அருமை மாமியும் கூட!
நீர் அறியாதது என்று ஒன்று உண்டோ?
தெரிந்ததைக் கூறுகின்றேன் உங்களுக்கு!”

மனிதன் செய்யும் செயல்கள் எல்லாம்
மனம், மொழி, மெய்யென மூவகைப்படும்;
மனம், மொழி, மெய்களின் தூய்மையே
மண்ணுலகில் மாண்புடைய தவம் ஆகும்.

தானம், தருமம், பொறுமை, உண்மை,
தியானம், உயிர்களிடம் கொண்ட அன்பு,
புலனடக்கம் இவைகளே இவ்வுலகில்
புகழ் பெற்றவை ‘மானச தவம்’ என்று!

பஞ்சக்ஷரத்தை ஜெபித்தல், பாடல் பாடுதல்;
நெஞ்சார ருத்திரஜபம் செய்தல், செய்வித்தல்;
தருமத்தை உரைத்துக் கருமத்தை உணர்த்தல்,
பெருமை பெற்ற ‘வாசிக தவம்’ எனப்படும்!

கைகளால் பூசித்தல், கால்களால் வலம் வருதல்,
மெய் பணிந்து தொழுதல், தலை வணங்குதல்,
தீர்த்த யாத்திரை சென்று வருதல், மற்றும்
தீர்த்தங்களில் புனித நீராடுவது ‘காயிக தவம்’.

மானசம், வாசிகம், காயிகம் மூன்றிலும்
மாறாப் புகழ் வாய்ந்தது காயிகம் ஆகும்.
நதிகள் சங்கமிக்கும் கடலில் நீராடுதல்,
நதி நீராடலிலும் உத்தமமானது தாயே!”

காஞ்சனமாலையின் உள்ளத்தில் ஓராசை
பஞ்சில் நெருப்பெனப் பற்றிக்கொண்டது!
கடல் நீராடிக் கர்மங்களைத் தொலைத்திடும்
உடல் தவத்தை உடனே செய்ய வேண்டும்!

அருமை மகளிடம் தன் உள்ளக்கருத்தை
மறைக்காமல் எடுத்துக் கூறினாள் அன்னை.
மகளோ தன் மணாளனிடம் கூறி அன்னையின்
தகவுடைய கடலாடலை மிகவும் விழைந்தாள்.

“ஒரு கடல் என்ன? உன் அன்னைக்காக
எழச் செய்வோம் இங்கு ஏழு கடலையும்!”
இறைவன் விழைந்தால் எதுவும் நடக்குமே!
குறைவின்றி பொங்கியது கடல்நீர் அங்கே!

கிழக்கே அமைந்த ஒரு அற்புத வாவியில்
எழும்பிப் பொங்கின ஏழு கடல் நீரும்!
ஏழு வண்ணங்களில் பொங்கிய ஏழு கடல்
முழுவதும் கலந்து வெண்ணிறமடைந்தது.

வானவில்லின் வர்ண ஜாலம் அறிவோம்!
வாவியில் நிகழ்ந்தது மாற்று வர்ணஜாலம்.
புண்ணிய நதிகள் அனைத்தின் தன்மையும்,
தண்மையும் வாவியில் ஒன்றாய் விளங்கின!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

# 9. COMMANDING THE SEVEN SEAS.

When Madhuraapuri was ruled by Soma Sundara Paandiyan, learned men, gnaanis, rushis and pundits used to visit the king often. One day Gouthama maha rushi visited the Queen mother Kanchanamaalai, after visiting the Paandiya King.

The queen mother wished to know the secret of ending the cycle of birth and death.

The rushi told her, “You are the queen mother and the mother in law of Lord Siva. Surely you will be knowing everything! Yet I will tell you what you want to know.

All the actions performed by mankind can be classified into three categories. They are the actions performed through one’s mind, one’s speech and one’s body. Controlling the actions performed by these three constitute the tapas.

Dhaanam, Dharmam, Patience, Satyam, Dhyaanam, love for everyone and perfect control over the thoughts is called the Maanasa Tapas.

The chanting of Panchaakshara, japam, sankeerthanam, and Satsang form the Vaachika tapas.

Archanai, circum-ambulating the temples, namaskaaram, vandanam, Theertha yaathra, and taking dips in the holy theertham are called the Gaayika tapas.

Of the three viz Maanasam, Vaachikam and Gaayikam, the best and the most effective is Gaayikam. Of these the holy dip in the sea where all the river merge is the best!”

This answer kindled in her heart a burning desire to take a holy dip in the sea and end her karma bandham. She told her wish to her daughter Thadaathagai. She told it to her husband the Paandiya king.

The Lord Siva who was the Paandiya king smiled at her and commanded the water of the Seven Seas to appear in a tank in the eastern part of Madhuraapuri.

The water from the seven a seas rose in the tank in seven different colors! Then they all got mixed and became white.

A rainbow appears because white light is split into seven colors. The reverse happened there. The seven colors merged to produce white.

The Holiness of all the rivers and seas was present in the water in that tank.

1#4d. நாரதரின் பதில் (3)

“அற்புத சக்தி மட்டும் இல்லாமல் போனால்
நின்றுவிடும் நம் தொழில்கள் முற்றிலுமாக!

சக்தியின் வயப்பட்டே உள்ளளோம் நாம்.
சக்திக்கு உட்பட்டே புரிகின்றோம் தொழில்.

மூழ்குகின்றேன் தியானத்தில் சில சமயம்
மூழ்குகின்றேன் இன்பத்தில் லக்ஷ்மியுடன்.

அறிதுயில் புரிகின்றேன் அவ்வப்போது;
புரிகின்றேன் அசுரருடன் உக்கிரப் போர்!

தோன்றினர் மது கைடபர்கள் என் செவிகளில்;
தோற்கவில்லை ஐயாயிரம் ஆண்டுப் போரில்.

சங்கரித்தேன் இறுதியில் அவர்களை நான்
சக்தி தேவியின் திருவருள் கனிந்தவுடன்.

பராபரை சக்திதேவியே என்று புரிவில்லையா?
பாரில் நிகழ்வன அவளால் தெரியவில்லையா?

இழி பிறவிகளாக திரியக் யோனிகளில் சென்று
விழைவார்களா பிறப்பதற்கு எவரேனும் கூறு!

தோன்றினேன் மீனாக, ஆமையாக, வராஹமாக!
தோன்றியது என்னுடைய சுயேச்சையால் அல்ல!

இழிந்த பிறவிகள் பல எடுத்த பின்னரும் – நான்
தொழப்படுவதும் என் முயற்சியினால் அல்ல.

ரமித்தும், சுகித்தும் லக்ஷ்மியுடன் இராமல்
ராக்ஷசர்களுடன் ஏன் புரியவேண்டும் போர்?

வில்லின் நாண் அறுந்துவிட்ட து ஒருமுறை.
வில்லின் நுனி அறுத்துவிட்டது என் தலையை

சிறந்த குதிரையின் முகத்தைப் பொருத்தினாய்;
சிறப்புறச் செய்தாய் ஹயானனாக என்னை நீ!

சுதந்திரர் அல்ல நம்மில் எவருமே!
சுயேச்சை இல்லை நம் எவருக்குமே!

சக்தியின் வசப்பட்டே உள்ளோம் நாம்;
சக்தியை தியானிக்கின்றேன்” என்றார்

தந்தைக்கு இதைக் கூறினார் விஷ்ணு;
என் தந்தை இதைக் கூறினார் எனக்கு.

சக்தியின் திருவடிளைத் தியானித்தால்
சக்தி நிறைவேற்றுவாள் கோரிக்கையை.”

1#4d. Naaradaa’s reply (3)

“Vishnu continued to tell my father Brahma!” said Naaradaa to Sage Vyaasa. “But for our special powers we will not be able to perform our prescribed duties so well. We are under the influence of Shakti Devi. We perform our duties so well only because of the grace of Shakti Devi.

At times I get lost in meditation. At times I enjoy the loving company of my consort Lakshmi Devi. At times I indulge in an all-knowing-sleep. At times I am at war with the wicked asuras.

Madhu and Kaitaba asuras emerged from my ears. But I could not defeat them for five thousand years. Finally I was able to vanquish them only with the divine grace and help of Shakti Devi.

She is called as Paraa Parai meaning she is supreme to all the other gods and there is no one supreme to her. Everything that happens always happens according to her wishes and plans.

No one likes to take birth in the wombs of animals that grow horizontally and move on four limbs. But I took the avatars as a fish, a tortoise and a boar only because Shakti Devi ordained it.

In spite of taking these lowly births, I have always been worshiped as a god and shown no disrespect whatsoever. That also happens not because of my efforts but because of her grace. Instead of enjoying the loving company of Lakshmi Devi why should I go to war with the demons and asuras?

Once the string on my bow got cut. The tip of the bow cut off my head. Then you Brahma had fixed the beautiful head of a horse on my body and made me famous as Hayagreeva.

None of us us have real freedom. None of us can do whatever we want to do. We always obey the wishes of Shakti Devi and behave accordingly. So it is the all powerful Shakti Devi I am meditating upon!”

Vishnu told this to my father and he told it to me. Meditate on the lotus feet of Shakti Devi. She will surely grant you the boon you seek oh Vyasa!” Naaradaa advised sage Vyaasa thus.

7#29a. சக்தியை அறியாத சிரிப்பு

"கூறினேன் சூரிய வம்சத்து அரசர் வரலாற்றை
கூறுவேன் சந்திர வம்சத்து அரசர் வரலாற்றை.

சிறந்து விளங்கினர் இவர்கள் தேவியின் அருளால்;
சிறந்து விளங்கும் அனைத்தும் தேவியின் அருளே.

வேதப் பிரகாசம் என்பது சக்தி தேவியே அறிவாய்!
தேவி உயர்ந்தவள் ஆவாள் பஞ்ச பிரம்மதையும் விட.

தேவி அமர்ந்துள்ளாள் பஞ்சபிரம்ம ஆசனத்தின் மீது;
தேவியை அறியாதவன் ஆகமாட்டான் ஒரு முக்தனாக.

தியான யோகத்தால் அறிய முடியும் பரமாத்மாவை.
தியானிக்க வேண்டும் தேவியை நாம் இடையறாது.

விடுதலை தரும் அந்த தியான யோகமே நமக்கு!
கொடுக்க வேண்டும் தேவிக்கு நம் முழு மனத்தை.

விளங்கினர் சந்திர, சூரிய வம்சத்து அரசர்கள்
அளவில்லாத பக்தியுடன் தேவி உபாசகர்களாக."

" கூறினீர்கள் நீங்கள் என்னிடம் முன்பு - தேவியின்
குறைவற்ற அம்சங்களே மும்மூர்த்திகளின் தேவியர்.

லக்ஷ்மி தேவி, சரஸ்வதி தேவி, கௌரி என்ற மூவரும்
லக்ஷ்யமான பரா சக்தி தேவியின் அம்சங்கள் எனில்

தக்ஷனுக்கும், பர்வத ராஜனுக்கும் புதல்வியாகச் சென்று
தேவி அவதரிப்பது எங்கனம் சாத்தியம் ஆகும் கூறுவீர்!

பாற்கடலில் லக்ஷ்மி தேவி தோன்றியது உண்மை எனில்
மாற்றம் கொண்ட இக்கருத்தினை விளக்குவீர் முனிவரே!"

வியாசர் விளக்கினார் தேவியின் சிறப்பை மன்னனுக்கு.
வியர்த்தம் ஆகும் வாழ்வு சக்தியின்றேல் என்று நன்கு.

7#29a. The laughter of ridicule

Sage Vyaasaa continued his speech to King Janamejayan.

"I have expatiated on the kings of Soorya vamsam. Now I shall tell you about the kings of Chandra vamsam.They all shone by the divine grace of Devi.

Anything that excels does excel by Devi's grace. Vedaprakasam is Devi herself. She is superior to the Pancha brahmas namely Brahma, Vishnu, Rudran, Eswaran and Sadaasivam).

She sits on an aasanam made up of these Pancha Brahmaas. We can know about Devi in Dhyaana yoga. Without knowing Devi no one can get liberated from samsaaraa.

We must meditate on Devi ceaselessly. That constant meditation liberates us giving us mukti. Both the Soorya vamsa and Chandra vamsa kings were staunch devotees of Devi."

Now King Janamejayan got a doubt. "You have told me earlier that the three consorts of The Trinity were the amsams of Paraa Shakti Devi. How and why was Devi born again as the daughter of Daksha Prajaapati and Parvata Raaajan? Why did Lakshmi appear from The Ocean of Milk?

These facts seem to contradict each other. Can you please explain to me more about this sire?"

Vyaasaa explained about the greatness of Devi and said that without Shakti the life would be impossible.

திருவிளையாடல்கள். முதற்பகுதி. மதுரைக்காண்டம்.

10. மலயத்வஜனை அழைத்தது.

பொங்கிய வாவியின் புதுப் புனல் நீரை
ஏங்கிய அன்னையும் கண்டு மகிழ்ந்தாள்.
அங்கேயே இருந்த நந்தவனத்தில் ஒரு
சிங்காசனத்தில் அமர்ந்திருந்தார் பிரான்.

அன்னப்பேடை என்னும் தடாதகையிடம்,
“அன்னையை நீராட அழைத்துச் செல்!” என,
அன்னையுடன் வாவியை அடைந்தவுடனே
அன்னை கேட்டாள்,”கடலாடும் விதி என்ன?”

“அருமைக் கணவன், பெருமை தரும் மகன்,
கரங்களைப் பற்றிக் கடலாட வேண்டும்!
பசுங்கன்றின் வாலைப் பற்றியும் ஒருவர்
பாசம் தகர்க்கும் கடலாடலாம்” என்றனர்.

“கணவனும் இல்லை! ஒரு மகனும் இல்லை!
கன்றின் வால் தான் வாய்த்திருக்கிறது!” எனக்
கண்ணீர் பெருக்கிய மாமியின் துயர் கண்டு
கணத்தில் ஒரு திட்டம் வகுத்தார் பிரான்.

இந்திரனுடன் அமர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்த,
தந்தையைப் போன்ற, மலயத்வஜனிடம்
மனத்தால் சங்கற்பித்தவுடனேயே அவர்
கணத்தில் வந்தார் தெய்வீக விமானத்தில்!

காலில் விழ வந்த மாமனைத் தடுத்து
ஆலிங்கனம் செய்து கொண்டார் பிரான்!
காலில் விழுந்து எழுந்த காஞ்சனமாலை
கரம் பற்றி அவருடன் கடலாடத் தயார்!

பரிசுத்தப்படுத்தும் பவித்திரத்தை அவர்கள்
விரலில் அணிந்தனர், நாவில் பஞ்சாக்ஷரம்;
நீரில் மூழ்கி எழுந்த இருவருக்குமே அங்கு
சீரிய சிவபிரானின் வடிவம் வாய்த்தது!

திரு நீலகண்டம், நான்குத் திருத்தோள்கள்,
திருநீற்று நெற்றி, திவ்விய த்ரிநேத்ரங்கள்;
மிளிர்ந்த ஸ்வரூபத்தைக் கண்டு கண்கள்
குளிர்ந்து உலகமே அதிசயித்து நின்றது!

பொன்னுலக விமானம் இறங்கியது கீழே!
பொன்னுலகோர் பெய்தனர் மலர் மாரி!
வேத கோஷமும், துந்துபி நாதமும் முழங்க,
தேவர்கள் புகழ, அடைந்தனர் சிவலோகம்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி .

# 10. BECKONING KING MALAYADHWAJA.

The queen mother was very happy that the holy water from all the seven seas was ready for her holy dip.The king sat in a simhaasana in a nandavanam nearby. He instructed his wife to take her mother for the holy dip.

The queen mother wanted to know the rules for the holy dip. The learned men present there told her,” A woman may hold the hand of her husband or son and take the dip. Or holding the tail of a cow’s calf is also allowed!”

The queen mother burst into tears! “I do not have either my husband or a son! I am destined to hold on to the tail of a calf!”

The king was moved to pity. He wished that the dead king Malayadhwaja, who was now a companion to Indra, should come down to earth.

Immediately the dead king descended near to the tank of seven seas in a divine vimaanam.

He rushed to prostrate to lord Siva but He stopped the old king and embraced him.The queen mother paid her respect to her husband. Both of them got ready for the holy dip. Both of them wore the purifying pavithram, held the hands of each other and took the holy dip.

When they came up again, lo and behold, both of them had acquired the swaroopam of Lord Siva himself! They had blue tinted throat, four arms, holy ash on their forehead and three eyes!

At the same time a divine vimaanam came down to take them to Sivalokam amidst the rain of flower from the sky, the divine music being played and the Vedas chanted by the Devas.

1#5a. ஹயக்ரீவன் (1)

பதினாயிரம் ஆண்டுகள் போரிட்டார் விஷ்ணு,
பயங்கரமாக அசுர வீரர்களுடன் தொடர்ந்து.

களைத்துப் போய்விட்ட விஷ்ணு சிறிது நேரம்
களைப்பாறினார் சமதளத்தில், பத்மாசனத்தில்.

வில்லை வலுவாகப் பதித்தார் பூமியில் – அந்த
வில்லின் நுனியில் பதித்தார் தன் முகவாயை.

சத்தம் இல்லாமல் நித்திரை செய்தார்;
எத்தனையோ நீண்ட காலம் ஓடிவிட்டது.

யாகம் செய்ய விரும்பினர் தேவர்கள் – ஆனால்
யாக கர்த்தா விஷ்ணுவோ ஆழ்ந்த நித்திரையில்.

‘விழிக்கும் வரை காத்திருப்போம்!’ என்றால்
விழிப்பதாகத் தெரியவில்லை நெடுங்காலம்.

ருத்திரர் கூறினார் எழுப்புவதற்கு உபாயம்.
“குத்திட்ட வில்லின் நாணை செல்லரித்தால்

நிமிர்ந்து விடும் வில்லின் மறு நுனி – அதனால்
நீங்கி விடும் விஷ்ணுவின் ஆழ்ந்த உறக்கம்.

தேவ காரியம் நடைபெறவேண்டும் – எனவே
தேவேந்திரன் அரிக்கட்டும் செல்லாக மாறி.”

“பாதியில் நல்ல நித்திரையைக் கலைப்பதும்;
பாதியில் புண்ணிய கதையை நிறுத்துவதும்;

பாதியில் கலவி இன்பத்தைக் குலைப்பதும்;
பாதகமாகும் தாய் சேயைப் பிரிப்பது போல“

தேவேந்திரன் மறுத்தான் பாதகம் புரிந்திட;
தேவர்கள் விடவில்லை அவனை மறுத்திட.

“யாகத்தில் அளிப்போம் அவிர்பாகம் உனக்கு!
யோசனை செய்யாமல் விஷ்ணுவை எழுப்பு!”

வில்நுனி நிமிர்ந்தது நடுக்கும் பேரொலியுடன்!

நடுங்கினர் தேவர்கள்; நடுங்கியது பூமி;
நடுங்கின மலைகள்; கடல் கொந்தளித்தது;

இருண்டு விட்டது சூரிய அஸ்தமனம் போல்!
பறந்து சென்றது நாரணன் தலை அதிர்வில்!

1#5a. Hayagreevan

Vishnu fought a prolonged war for ten thousand years. He felt completely exhausted and wanted to rest for a while. He sat in padma asanam in a level ground. He planted his bow firmly on the ground and planted his chin firmly on the tip of his bow. He went into a deep sleep. Many years rolled by.

Meanwhile the Deva wanted to perform a yaagaa. But the yaaga kartaa Vishnu was fast asleep. They waited for a long time hoping that he would wake up by himself – but he did not.

The Deva kaaryam must not be delayed. So Rudran told a plan to wake up Vishnu. He told Indra,”Change into a termite and cut off the string of the bow. The other end of the bow will become straight and this will wake up Vishnu from his sleep.”

But Indra refused saying, ” Waking up a person in a deep sleep, stopping a divine story in the middle, disturbing the happy union of man and a woman and separating an infant from its mother are deadly sins. I will not do it!”

But the Deva would not listen to him. They promised him a huge share of havis in the yaagaa. Indra finally gave in to their request, transformed himself into a termite and cut off the string of the bow. The bow straightened with a terrifying loud noise.

The Deva shook with inexplicable fear. The whole earth trembled, the string of mountains vibrated and the seas swelled up into huge tidal waves due to these vibrations. It suddenly became dark resembling the sunset. At the same time the beautiful head of Vishnu got cut off and flew away no one knew where to!

7#29b. சக்தியை அறியாத சிரிப்பு (2)

முத்தொழில்கள் செய்தனர் மும்மூர்த்திகள்
மூன்று தேவிகள் தந்த சக்தியின் உதவியால்.

ஹாலஹலர்கல் பெற்றனர் பிரமனிடம் வரம் ;
ஞாலங்கள் அனைத்தையும் வென்று விட்டனர்.

வளர்ந்தது மமதை; உயர்ந்தது அகம்பாவம்;
தளராது சென்றனர் கயிலை மலை, வைகுந்தம்!

திருமாலும், ருத்திரனும் புரிந்தனர் போர் - நீண்ட
அறுபதினாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்குத் தொடர்ந்து!

வென்ற பின்னரும் அறியவில்லை இருவரும் - தம்
வெற்றியின் காரணம் தேவியரின் சக்தி என்பதை.

சிரித்தனர் இருவரும் தேவியரை எள்ளி நகையாடி.
சிரித்தனர் தேவியர் இவர் தம் இறுமாப்பை எண்ணி.

அருவருப்பான வார்த்தைகளால் இகழ்ந்தனர் கணவர்.
இரு தேவியரும் எங்கோ சென்று மறைந்து விட்டனர்.

சக்திமயமான தேவியர் விலகிச் சென்றதால்
சக்தி ஹீனர்கள் ஆகிவிட்டனர் கணவன்மார்

இழந்தனர் தாம் பெற்றிருந்த ஞானத்தை;
இழந்தனர் தம் தொழில் புரியும் சக்தியை.

பலமற்ற இருவரைக் கண்டு வியந்தான் பிரமன் ,
பலவீனத்தின் காரணத்தையும் கண்டறிந்தான்.

செய்யலானான் முத் தொழில்களை ஒருவனாக;
செய்வதற்கு வேண்டிய சக்தியைத் தரும் தவம்.

தவம் செய்ய இயலவில்லை பிரமனால் - தன்
தவப் புதல்வர்களை அழைத்தான் தன்னிடம்.

"முத்தொழில் புரிகின்றேன் தனி ஒருவனாக
எத்தொழில் புரியவும் தேவை சக்தியல்லவா?

தவம் செய்வீர் இருவரும் தபோவனம் சென்று;
தவப் பயனாகப் பெறுவர் அரி, அரன் சக்தியை.

புகழ் பெறுவீர் நீவிர் சிறிதும் சுயநலமின்றிப்
பூவுலக நன்மை கருதித் தவம் புரிவதால். "

சென்றான் மகன்கள் தபோவனத்துக்கு;
செய்தனர் தேவி தியானம் குறையின்றி.

7#29b. The laughter or ridicule (2)

The Trinity got the three Devis as their consorts and started doing their three folded jobs well. Halahalas did penance towards Brahma and became very powerful. They won over all the three worlds. The invaded Kailash and Vaikuntam.

Rudra and Vishnu fought with them for sixty thousand years before they could vanquish them. They took pride in their valor and endurance instead of owing the victory to the shakti given to them by their consorts.

Their Devis Lakshmi and Gowri burst out laughing to note that pride and arrogance of their spouses. One thing lead to another. Then Hari and Haran made fun of their Devis and the Devis just disappeared from there.

Being separated from their respective Shakti Devis, the two gods were unable to peroform their duties as before. They lost their knowledge and power to do their jobs and the order of the universe was affected.

Brahma was surprised to see these two gods powerless. He learned what had happened by his Gnaana drushti. He took over the duties of both Vishnu and Rudran in addition to his own.

So was struggling to do the work of the Trinity singlehandedly. He needed more power and energy. These can be had only by doing penance but he did not have time to do penance.

So hE called his sons to him and said,"Please go to Tapovanam and do penance on Devi. As a result of this penance Vishnu and Rudran must regain their original powers.

You are going to penance without any selfish motives and also for the sake of the whole universe. You will become very famous"

Brahma's sons went to Tapovanam and started doing severe penance on Devi.

திருவிளையாடல்கள். முதற்பகுதி. மதுரைக்காண்டம்.

# 11. உக்கிரவர்ம பாண்டியன்.

சோம சுந்தர பாண்டியன் காலத்தில்,
சோம குலத்தின் பெருமை தழைத்தது.
மகனை விழைந்த தடாதகை பிராட்டிக்கு,
மகனாக முருகனையே அளித்தார் சிவன்!

கர்ப்பம் தரித்தாள் தடாதகைப் பிராட்டி,
கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்கள் பிறரைப் போலவே!
காலம் கனிந்தது அவள் குழந்தையைப் பெற,
ஞாலம் மகிழ்ந்தது திரு முருகனைப் பெற்று!

திங்கட் கிழமையில், சுப முஹூர்த்ததில்,
திருவாதிரை நட்சத்திரம் கூடிய வேளையில்,
திரு முருகனே வந்து உலகினில் பிறந்தான்
திருமகள் தடாதகையின் மணி வயிற்றில்!

இளம் சூரியனைப் போல் ஒளி வீசிடும்
தளிர் மேனி கொண்டு விளங்கினான்.
மதுராபுரியில் பொங்கியது மங்கல விழா,
மன்னர்கள், ஞானிகள், ரிஷிகள் கூடிப் புகழ!

பொன்னும் பொருளும் வழங்கப் பட்டது
மன்னனால் அவனது குடிமக்களுக்கு!
பனி நீரும், சந்தனமும், கஸ்தூரியும் கூடி,
இனியில்லை இது போன்ற சுவர்க்கம் என,

ஜாத கரணம் செய்தான் ஞானக் குமரனுக்கு,
நாம கரணம் செய்தான் உக்ரவர்மன் என்று!
ஐந்து வயதிலேயே பூணூலை அணிவித்து,
ஐயம் திரிபறக் கற்பித்தான் வேதசாஸ்திரம்.

படை களப் பயிற்சி, அதில் நல்ல தேர்ச்சி!
பரியேற்றம், கரியேற்றம், தேரோட்டம்,
எட்டு வயதிலேயே கற்றுத் தேர்ந்தான்
எட்டெட்டுக் கலைகளையும் அக்குமரன்!

பாசுபதாஸ்திரம் மட்டும் கற்றான் - தன்
பாசம் மிகுந்த தந்தையார் மன்னனிடமே!
வயதுக்குத் தகுந்த வளர்ச்சியும், வீரமும்,
வயதுக்கு மீறின வேகமும், விவேகமும்!

முப்பத்து இரண்டு லட்சணங்களும் கூடி
அப் பதினாறு வயதுக் குமரனிடம் மிளிர,
திருமணம் செய்வித்து முடி சூட்டிவிட
விருப்பம் கொண்டான் பாண்டிய மன்னன்.

 # 11. Ugravarman.

Soma Sundara Paandiyan made his Chandra Vamsa very popular. His queen Thadaathagai wanted a son. The Lord wished that Skanda himself should be born as their son.

The queen became pregnant and delivered a brilliant boy as the amsam of Lord Skanda Himself, on a an auspicious Monday when the star was Thiruvaadhirai.

His face was as brilliant as the rising sun.The whole city celebrated the birth of the prince.The city was purified and decorated. Lavish gifts were given to Brahmins and other deserving persons.The King performed his son’s jaatakaranam and Namakaranam as Ugravarman.

The boy had his upanayanam at the age of five. He started learning Veda Sasthras. He learned all the war techniques and the sixty four fine arts. By the time Ugravarman was eight years old, he had mastered every art and science a king should know!.

He learned the use of Paasupathaasthra from his father himself. He grew up well and by the time he was sixteen years old, he was both brave and mature for his age. He was a sight to the sore eyes, since he was bestowed with all the thirty two lakshanas to perfection.

The King wanted to perform his wedding at the right age with a suitable princess and crown him as the new king!

1#5b. ஹயக்ரீவன் (2)

அந்தகாரம் நீங்கி விட்டது சற்று நேரத்தில்;
அந்தோ இருந்தது சிரமற்றுச் சிதைந்த உடல்!

கபந்தத்தைக் கண்டு ஓலமிட்டனர் தேவர்கள்;
“அபயம் அளிக்கும் பெருமானுக்கு அபாயமா?

அழிவே இல்லாதவனுக்கு அழிவு ஏற்பட்டதே?
அழிக்க முடியாத ஒருவனை அழித்தது எது?

எங்கள் கதி என்ன ஆகுமே இனிமேல் அறியோம்!
எங்களாலேயே விளைந்தது இந்தக் கொடுமை!”

ஆறுதல் கூறினார் தேவகுரு பிருஹஸ்பதி.
“அழுவதும், அரற்றுவதும் பயன் தர மாட்டா!

தெய்வப் பிரயத்தனத்துடன் நம் பிரயத்தனம்!
செய்யும் அனைத்தும் நிகழ்வது இவற்றால்!

நமது முயற்சிக்கு வெற்றியை அளித்திடும்
நமது முயற்சியுடன் கூடிய தெய்வ முயற்சி.

தெய்வ சங்கல்பமின்றி நிகழ்ந்து விடாது ஏதும்!
தெய்வ சங்கல்பமே முயற்சியும் அதன் பலனும் “

மறுத்தான் தேவகுருவின் கருத்தை ஏற்பதற்கு;
மாறுபட்ட கருத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த இந்திரன்!

“உறக்கம் கலைவதற்கு செய்தோம் முயற்சி;
பறந்து சென்று விட்டது விஷ்ணுவின் தலை!

நம் முயற்சி, தெய்வ முயற்சி, இவை இரண்டும்
தம்மில் வேறுபடாமல் நேருமா இக் கொடுமை?”

The darkness got dispelled soon. The Deva saw the decapitated and deformed body of Vishnu. They lamented on their misdeed.

“The god who used to protect us from dangers is himself in a danger. The God who can not be destroyed had himself got destroyed. Which power could have destroyed the protector of the universe? What will be out fate and future now? We have brought ruin to ourselves by our misdeed”

Bruhaspati consoled them, “There is no use crying or lamenting now. Everything happens only when our efforts and the god’s efforts go
hand in hand. Nothing can ever happen without god’s will and wish”

Indra refuted this by saying, ” We wished only to wake up Vishnu from his deep sleep. But now he has lost his head in our effort. How can this happen unless God’s wish was different from our wish?”

7#30a. சதி தேவி

அடைந்தனர் இமயமலைச் சாரலை அனைவரும்;
அமர்ந்தனர் தேவியின் திருவடிகளின் தியானத்தில்.

ஜெபித்தனர் மாயாபீஜ மந்திரத்தைத் தொடர்ந்து;
ஜெயித்தனர் தேவியின் திவ்வியமான தரிசனத்தை.

மூன்று கண்கள்; நான்கு கரங்களோடு - அவர்கள்
முன்னாள் தோன்றினாள் மணித்வீபவாசினி தேவி.

தொழுதனர் தேவியை, மகிழ்ந்தனர் காட்சியினால்,
"விழையும் வரம் எதுவோ கூறுங்கள்'"என்றாள் .

"அடைய வேண்டும் ஹரி, ஹரர்கள் தம் சக்தியை!
அடைய வேண்டும் ஹரி ஹரர்கள் தம் தேவியரை"

தக்ஷன் வேண்டினான் தேவி மகளாக வருவதற்கு;
தயையுடன் அளித்தாள் தக்ஷனுக்கு அந்த வரத்தை.

"உண்டானது துன்பம் ஹரிக்கும், ஹரனுக்கும்,
ஒண்முகத் தேவியரை இகழ்ந்து நகைத்ததால்;

அடைவார்கள் ஹரி ஹரர்கள் தம் சக்தியினை;
அடைவார்கள் ஹரி ஹரர்கள் தம் பத்தினியரை;

தோன்றுவேன் தக்ஷப்பிரஜாபதியின் மகளாக;
தோன்றுவேன் நான் பாற்கடலில் லக்ஷ்மியாக !"

அருள் செய்துவிட்டு மறைந்து விட்டாள் தேவி;
திருமால், சிவனார் பெற்றனர் தம் சக்திகளை .

தக்ஷனின் மகளாகத் தோன்றினாள் ஒரு சக்தி;
தாக்ஷாயணி, சதி தேவி என்ற பெயர் பெற்றாள்.

மலர் மழை பொழிந்தது விண்ணிலிருந்து;
உலகமே மகிழ்ந்தது தேவியின் வரவால்!

சூரியன் ஒளிர்ந்தான் அதிகமான ஒளியுடன்;
பாரினில் பொங்கிப் பரவியது பெருமகிழ்ச்சி.

பத்தினியானாள் சதி தேவி பரமசிவனாருக்கு;
அக்கினியில் பிரவேசித்தாள் ஒரு காரணமாக.

7#30a. Sati Devi

The sons of Brahma reached the slopes of Himaalayaas and sat down meditating upon Devi, uttering her Maayaa Bheeja manta. Devi was pleased and appeared before them.

She had three brilliant eyes and four beautiful hands. She spoke in a voice sweeter than the song of a cuckoo,"What do you wish for Oh sons of Brahma?"

The sons of Brahma paid obeisance to Devi and put forward these requests," Vishnu and Rudran must regains their power and knowledge they have lost now. They must win back their consorts who are your own amsams"

Dahshan had one more request to Devi," You must be born as my daughter" Devi gave that boon to Dakshan.

She told all of them,"Vishnu and Rudran will get back their powers and knowledge as before. They will win their consorts as before. I will be born as DaakshaayaNi the dughter of Dakshan. I shall appear from the Ocean of Milk as Lakshmi Devi and wed Lord Naaraaynaa."

Devi granted these boons and disappeared. Siva and Vishnu got back their powers. Shakti appeared as the daughter of Dakshan. She was called DaakshaayaNi and Sati Devi.

Flowers rained from the sky. The whole world became very happy and pleased. The sun shone more brilliantly than usual. Sati Devi married Parama Sivan. Later she did agni pravesam for a specific reason.

12. காந்திமதியுடன் திருமணம்.

திருவிளையாடல்கள். முதற்பகுதி. மதுரைக்காண்டம்.

# 12. காந்திமதியுடன் திருமணம்.

பிறப்பு, குடி, குலம், கோத்திரம் முதலிய
சிறப்புக்களை ஆய்ந்து தேர்வு செய்தனர்;
கல்யாணபுர மன்னன் சோமசேகரனின்
காந்திமதி என்னும் சூரியகுலப்பெண்ணை!

காந்திமதியே மணப்பெண் என்னும்போதே,
காந்திமதியை உக்கிரனுக்கு அளிக்கும்படிக்
கனவில் தோன்றிய சித்தர் ஆணையிடவே,
மனம் மிக மகிழ்ந்தனர் சூரிய வம்சத்தினர்!

மதுரையை நோக்கி இவர்கள் செல்லவும்,
மதுரையிலிருந்து அவர்கள் எதிர்ப்படவே,
இருதரப்பினரும் ஒரு மனதினர் ஆனதால்
திரும்பினர் தூதுவர் முன்னதாக மதுரை.

சோமசேகரனைத் தழுவி வரவேற்றான்,
சோமசுந்தர பாண்டிய மன்னனாம் சிவன்;
மண நாளும் முஹூர்த்தமும் குறித்தனர்’
மண ஓலைகள் பறந்தன மாநில அரசர்க்கு!

மண முரசும், வாத்தியங்களும் முழங்கின!
மணம் வீசும் பொருட்கள் நகரை அலங்கரிக்க,
மங்கலம் பொங்கித் திகழ்ந்தது அங்கே!
மங்கலப் பொருட்களால் நிறைந்த மதுரை!

அழைப்பு ஓலை பெற்ற அனைத்தரசர்களும்,
அயல் நாட்டு மன்னர்களும், தூதுவர்களும்,
தழைக்கும் ஐந்து வகை சமயத்தினரும்,
அயல் சமயத்தினரும் அன்புடன் குழும,

மணக் கோலத்தில் ஒளி வீசியவர்கள்,
மணம் புரிந்து, பெற்றனர் வாழ்த்துக்கள்!
வரிசைக்கேற்ப அளித்தனர் பல வகைப்
பரிசுப் பொருட்களும் விருந்தினருக்கு!

பிரிய மனம் இன்றியே பிரிந்து சென்றனர்,
பிரியா விடை பெற்றுக் கொண்டவர்கள்!
முருகனை நிகர்த்த மணமகன் உக்கிரனையும்,
முறுவல் நங்கையைப் பிரியவும் கூடுமோ?

“உள்ளனர் நமக்குப் பகைவர்கள் மூவர்!
கள்ள மனம் கொண்ட இந்திரன் முதலவன்;
செருக்கும், மதர்ப்பும் கொண்டு உயர்ந்த,
மேரு மலையே இரண்டாவது பகைவன்;

கடலும் தரும் எல்லை இல்லாத்தொல்லை!
அடக்க வேண்டும் இம்மூன்று பகைவர்களை!
கொடுக்கும் ஆயுதங்களப் பெற்றுக்கொள்வாய்!
தொடுப்பாய் நீ இவற்றைப் பகைவர்கள் மேல்!

இந்திரன் தலையை இவ்வளை கொண்டு அடி!
சுந்தர மேருவை இச்செண்டு கொண்டு அடி!
கடல் நீர் முற்றிலுமாக வற்றிப் போகும்படி
வடிவேலினை விடுவாய் நீ பொங்கும் கடல்மேல்! ”

தந்தையை வணங்கிய உக்கிரவர்மன் அவர்
தந்த ஆயுதங்களைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டான்!
இந்திரன் முதலானோர் பகை தீர்ப்பது என
எந்த நேரமும் அவன் தயாராக இருந்தான்!

12. WEDDING WITH KANTIMATHI.

A search was on to find the most suitable bride for Ugravarman, taking into consideration the kulam, gothram, vamsam etc. The most suitable bride was Kantimathi, the daughter of the Soorya Vamsa King Somasekaran of Kalyanapuram.

At that time a sidhdha appeared in the dream of the bride’s father and instructed him to present his daughter to Ugravarman of Chandra vamsam in marriage.

A party left from Kalyanapuram to Mdhuraapuri to fix the wedding. Another team left Madhuraapuri for the same purpose! Both the teams met mid way! Both the parties were happy that their mission was successful.

When the bride’s party arrived in Madhuraapuri, they were given a royal welcome. The kings embraced each other. They fixed the auspicious day and time for the subha muhoortham.

The wedding invitation was dispatched to all the kings. The city put on a festive look once again! Auspicious decorations made Mdhuraapuri better than Swargapuri! All the Kings, ambassadors of foreign countries and religious heads arrived for the royal wedding.

The bride and the groom were dazzling with brilliance-decorated with rich ornaments and finest silks. The wedding was performed at the appointed time.The young couple were blessed by all the elders. In return they showered lavish gifts on every one of their guests.

No one wanted to leave the city. But they must go back to where they came from, to where they really belonged! Every one took leave and left Madhuraapuri.

Ugravarman’s father Soma Sundara Pandiyan spoke to his son thus:
“Son! we have three powerful enemies! Indra is the first and foremost. The proud and haughty Mount Meru is the second. The sea is the third. You must conquer them with these three asthras I am giving you now.

Hit Indra’s head with this discus, hit the head of Mount Meru with the whip and throw this mighty spear in to the sea to defeat it!”

Ugravarman received those three asthras with great reverence. He was waiting for the right time to vanquish his three powerful enemies.

1#5c. ஹயக்ரீவன் (3)

பிரமன் குறுக்கிட்டுக் கூறலுற்றான் – ஒரு
பிரமிக்க வைக்கும் காலத் தத்துவத்தை.

“தோன்றுகின்றன காலத்தால் செயல்கள்;
தோன்றுகின்றன செயல்களால் பலன்கள்.

அனுபவிக்க வேண்டும் வினைப்பயன்களை;
அணுவளவும் அதிலிருந்து தப்பவே முடியாது.

அகந்தை அடைந்தேன் நான் காலவசத்தால்;
அகந்தை அகன்றது ஒரு தலையை இழந்ததும் .

சந்திரன் க்ஷயரோகி ஆனான் சாபத்தால்;
இந்திரன் பெற்றான் ஆயிரம் யோனிகள்;

ஒளிந்திருந்தான் பிரம்மஹத்தியை அடைந்து,
வெள்ள நீரில் தாமரைத் தண்டினில் மறைந்து!

விஷ்ணுவின் தலை விழுந்தது உப்புக் கடலில்
விபரீதச் செயல்களும் தெய்வச் செயல்களே!

மகாமாயை, வித்யா ஸ்வரூபிணி என்றும்
மகாதேவி, சனாதனி, சக்தி தேவி என்றும்

நாராயணியைத் தியானம் செய்வோம் நாம்
பாராமுகம் கொள்ளது உதவுவாள் தேவி.

பிரமன் கூறியதை ஏற்றனர் தேவர்கள்
பிரமாதமாகத் தேவியைத் துதித்தனர்.

வேதங்கள் வந்தனன தேக உருவெடுத்து
வேத புருஷர்கள் துதித்தனர் தேவியை.

1#5c. Hayagreevan (3)

Brahma spoke now explaining the Principle of Time Factor and it effects. He said, “Everything happens at the appointed time and hour. Every action has its aftereffects. We will have to face the consequences of our actions. There is no hope of eluding or escaping from them.

Due to the influence of my bad Time, once I became very arrogant and proud. Lord Siva plucked off one of my five heads and I came back to my senses.

Chandran was cursed to lose his form and vanish due to his bad time. Indra was cursed and developed one thousand female birth marks. He was afflicted by the Brahmahaththi and had to hide inside the lotus stem in Maanasarovar for a long time.

Not that Vishnu lost his head is also due to the Time factor. There is only one supreme power unaffected by this Time factor. It is the Shakti Devi. Let us worship her and seek her grace. I am sure she will melt down with pity and help us out at this hour of ordeal.”

All the Deva agreed to this suggestion. They started praising the all powerful Devi. Vedas assumed human form and started singing the praise of Devi along with the Deva.
