#40b. Gajamukha asuran

Vibudha became a female elephant and Maagadar a male elephant. When they made love, a mighty son Gajamukha asuran was born to them. Many more asuras were born out of the hair follicles of the female elephant.

Maagdar was taken aback. How could he a rushi produce asuras? He asked Vibuda, "Tell me the truth now. Who are you?" Vibuda was honest and told him all about herself.

She said "I am an asura kanya sent to you to beget mighty sons. Please bless our children before I take them back to the asura kingdom"

Th news that a mighty son and may more valiant asuras have been born was a welcome news to the asura. They rejoiced on hearing this.

Sukraachaarya - the asura kulaguru - told Gajamukhan, "You must become very strong by doing penance and obtaining boons from lord Siva. He is very generous with his boons."

Gajamukha asuran started doing severe penance on Siva. Eventually Siva appeared before him and gave him several boons. Gajamukhan became invincible by the Devas. He would conquer and rule over all the three worlds.

Gajamuhkan made Maathangapuram his capital city and ruled all the three worlds. Deva became his servants and did menial jobs given to them by him.

Takes me back to my childhood days when I used to " paduththufy " my Periamma
for stories - God knows how many she just cooked-up herself, but they were all very cute .

Reading these takes me very far back in time and brings back memories of some very simple, loving
people who did not put on airs .

I remember my paternal grandfather with gratitude and affection.
He was one of the main forces who shaped me to what I am today.

He imbibed in all his grand kids a love for God, morals, fascinating stories, grammar, maths, music and so on.

He made his name K.R. Narayan famous - long before some one else did .

I myself imagine that I am writing all these for my own grand children - who are too young to read these now - and for the grandchildren of other people in the world.

I am sure you will enjoy the Venkatesa Puraanam even more.
But Devi Bhaagavtam is a more serious stuff as far as I have covered.

#40c. கரிமுக நாதன்

உத்தியான வனத்தில் உலவினர் சிவன் உமை;
சித்திரங்கள் விளங்கின மண்டபச் சுவர்களில்.

எனையவற்றில் இருந்து மாறுபட்டு இருந்தது
யானைகள் சுகித்திருப்பது போன்ற சித்திரம்.

பெண் யானையைப் பார்த்திருந்தாள் உமை;
ஆண் யானையில் லயித்திருந்தான் சிவன்;

கோடி சூரியப் பிரகாசத்துடன் தோன்றினார்,
கோடி மன்மத அழகுடன் குட்டி விநாயகர்!

உச்சி முகர்ந்து மகிழ்ந்தனர் விநாயகரை;
"அச்சம் தீர்க்கப் பிறந்தவன் நீ!" என்றனர்.

சர்வ சக்திகளையும் அளித்து வாழ்த்தினர்;
சர்வத்துக்கும் அவரை முதன்மை ஆக்கினர்.

"அடிமைப் படுத்தியுள்ளான் தேவரைக் கஜமுகன்.
கொடுமைப் படுத்துகிறான் தேவரைக் கஜமுகன்.

அழிவில்லாத வரத்தைப் பெற்றுள்ளான்;
அளவில்லாத மமதை கொண்டுள்ளான்.

முடிப்பாய் கஜமுகனைப் போரில் வென்று.
துடைப்பாய் தேவர்களின் துயரை இன்று!"

புறப்பட்டு விட்டார் யுத்தத்திற்கு விநாயகர்;
பூதன் அசலன் ஆனான் அவரது வாகனமாக.

கஜமுகன் படைவீரர்கள் தயார் நிலையில்!
கலந்தன படைகள் மாதங்க நகர் அருகில்!

விநாயகர் முன் வந்து நின்றான் கஜமுகன்.
"வீரப் பிரதாபச் சிறுவன் நீதானா?" என்றான்.

"அறிவாயா சிறுவா வில்லை எடுப்பது பற்றி?
அறிவாயா சிறுவா பாணம் தொடுப்பது பற்றி?"

"தர்மம் பெரியது; அதர்மம் சிறியது அறிவாய்.
தர்மம் வெல்லும் உருவில் சிறியதானாலும் !

தேவர்களை சிறை விடு! நீ நல்லவனாகி விடு!
தேவையில்லை இங்கு இன்று இந்த யுத்தம்.

அழிவில்லாமல் நீடு வாழலாம் இப்போதும்
அழித்துவிட்டால் உன் அகந்தையை நீயே!"

#40c. Karimukha Naathan

Siva and Uma were taking a stroll in a garden. It had a mandapam with colorful paintings on it walls. One of those paintings was different from the rest. It portrayed two elephants playing amorously. Siva was staring at the male elephant and Uma at the female elephant. Baby Vinayaka came in to existence from the power of their thoughts.

He was as brilliant as ten million suns put together and as lovely as ten million Manmathas put together. Siva and Uma embraced the child and said, "You are born to put an end to all the sufferings of the Deva and remove their fear."

They blessed him with all the special powers. They made him the foremost among gods. They told Vinayaka, "Gajamukha asuran has imprisoned all the Deva. He is ill treating them in the prison. He has got several boons and has become very arrogant because of the boons. You must release the Deva from his prison"

Vinayaka left for the battle field. He rode on the back of Achalan one of the gaNaas of Siva. Gajamukhan had his army ready and the two armies came together outside Maathangapuram.

Gajamukha asuran came in front of Vinayaka and asked, "So you are the miracle child born to kill me! Do you know how to hold a bow? Do you know how to shoot an arrow?"

Vinayaka replied, "Dharma is large and powerful. Adhrma is small and weak. Dharma will conquer Adharma. Release the Deva from your prison now. This war is not necessary. Destroy your pride so that you may still live long"

#40d. மூஷிகன்

பாணங்களைப் பொழிந்தான் கஜமுக அசுரன்
பாணங்களை விழுங்கியது கரிமுகனின் கதை.

தேரை உடைத்தார் கரிமுகன் தன் பாணத்தால்;
தேரை உருவாக்கினான் அசுரன் மாயையால்!

தண்டத்தை அவர் மீது ஏவினான் கஜமுகன்
தண்டத்தை உடைத்தது கரிமுகனின் கதை.

கதையால் அடித்தார் கஜமுகனின் மார்பை .
கஜமுகன் விழுந்தான் நினைவை இழந்து.

விழுந்த அசுரன் எழுந்தபோது - ஆயுதத்தால்
எழுந்தவன் மார்பைப் பிளந்தார் கரிமுகன்.

அழிவில்லாத அசுரன் ஆனான் மூஷிகனாக
அட்டஹாசம் செய்தான் உலகங்கள் நடுங்கிட.

ஏறி அமர்ந்தார் அவன் முதுகில் கரிமுகன்;
மாறிவிட்டன அவனது ஆணவ மலங்கள்.

அடிமை ஆகிவிட்டான் கரிமுக நாதனுக்கு
வடிவெடுத்தான் அவரது சீரிய வாகனமாக

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#40d. Mooshikan

Gajamukha asuran shot a shower of arrows. Karimukhan's mace swallowed all the arrows. Karimukhan destroyed the chariot of the Gajamukha asuran but he created a new chariot by his power of Maya.

Gajamukha asuran now threw his dandam on Karimukhan but Karimukhan's mace shattered the dandam. Karimukhan hit Gajamukha asuran with his dandam and the asuran fell down unconscious.

When he came round and got up again, Karimukhan tore open his chest into two. But Gajamukha asuran could not be destroyed. Now he became a giant Mooshikan and threatened everyone.

Karimukhan sat on his back and the divine touch destroyed the pride and conceit of the asuran. He became the vaahanaa of Karimukan willingly now.

When a person clicks the Like button, it gets added to the score to form an impressive number slowly and steadily.
Also it gets recorded where anybody could read the liked posts and enjoy.
But when writing a note of like here or there, it is strewn in between the other posts and gets lost.
Don't you think so???

#40e. சொக்கட்டான்

வைகுந்த வாசன் வந்தார் ஒருநாள்
கைலாச வாசனைக் காண்பதற்காக.

சொக்கட்டான் ஆடினார் சிவன், உமை.
இக்கட்டான ஒரு பந்தயம் வைத்தனர்.

வென்றவருக்குத் தர வேண்டும் தம்
பொன்னாபரணங்களைத் தோற்றவர்.

சாட்சி ஆக்கப்பட்டார் விஷ்ணு மூர்த்தி;
கட்சி மாறிவிட்டார் பந்தயம் முடிவில்.

வென்றவள் உமை என்ற போதிலும்
வென்றவர் சிவன் என்று சொன்னார்.

கண்மண் தெரிமல் வந்து விட்டது
அண்ணன் மீது உமைக்குக் கோபம்.

"குருடன் போலச் சாட்சி சொன்னதால்
குருட்டு மலைப்பாம்பாக மாறிவிடுவீர்!"

கோபம் சாபமாக மாறியது உமையிடம்,
சாபம் மாற்றியது விஷ்ணுவைப் பாம்பாக

"கஜமுகனை வென்ற கரிமுகன் அருளால்
நிஜ உருவம் பெருவீர், வருந்தாதீர்!" என

அன்புடன் ஆறுதல் கூறினார் சிவபிரான்;
மண்ணுலகில் காத்திருந்தது மலை பாம்பு.

யத்த களத்திலிருந்து வந்த கரிமுகன்
மெத்த வருந்தும் பாம்பைக் கண்டார்.

தீர்ந்தது தாபம் நீங்கியது சாபம் - சுயவுரு
திரும்பியது உடனே கரிமுகன் அருளால்

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி

#40e. The bet

Vishnu visited Kailash one day. Siva and Uma were playing a game of dice. Vishnu was made the judge. The bet laid was that the loser must give away all the ornaments to the winner.

Uma won the game but Vishnu told a lie that Siva had won the game. Uma got terribly enraged by this utter lie and uttered a terrible curse to Vishnu.

"You behaved like a blind man and gave a wrong judgement. May you become a blind python and live on earth!". Siva was moved with pity and told Vishnu, "When Vinayaka wins over Gajamukha asuran in the battle, he will remove the curse laid on you and you will regain your original form"

The blind python was waiting patiently for the arrival of Vinayaka. After subduing Gajamukha asuran Vinayaka came to the place where the python was waiting for his grace. He removed the curse and Vishnu got back his original form.

Sure, I get the full import of your post. But then when I actually record my LIKE by way of
a post, my vocabulary has a chance of improving - I learnt the words like ' jallu' and 'sellapom' and got
the title of a " wooer of any 'thing' that is sari clad ", from a self proclaimed agnostic septuagenarian .

And that was just for objecting to a caustic remark on RR's assumed 'gender superiority'.

I am waiting for some more from the wise old man- but I already know words like Kooja, Jaadi-Moodi, Bajanai,
Sombu, Lotta, Chamcha, Chhela etc .

ரௌத்திரகேது சாரதை தம்பதியருக்குப்
புத்திரர் இருவர்; அவர்கள் இரட்டையர்.

தேவாந்தகன், நராந்தகன் என்ற பெயரில்
ஏவா மக்களாக வளர்ந்தனர் சிறப்புடன்.
.

தேவ முனிவர் நாரதர் வந்தார் அங்கே;
ஆவலுடன் வேண்டினர் ஆசீர்வாதம்.

பஞ்சாக்ஷர மந்திரத்தை உபதேசித்தார்
"பிஞ்சு மதி நாதனைப் பூஜியுங்கள்"எனத்

தவம் செய்யச் சென்றனர் வனத்துக்கு;
தடாகக் கரையில் இருந்தது சிவாலயம்.

தடாக நீரில் புனித நீராடினர் இருவரும்,
விடாமல் ஆராதித்தனர் சிவபிரானை.

பஞ்ச இந்திரியங்களை நன்கு நிர்வகித்தனர்.
கொஞ்சமும் உண்ணவில்லை அன்ன,பானம்.

தவம் செய்தனர் ஓராயிரம் ஆண்டுகள்
தவத்தை மெச்சிக் காட்சி தந்தான் சிவன்.

விரும்பித் தவம் செய்தது பிறவா வரத்துக்கு
விரும்பிக் கேட்டதோ முற்றிலும் மாறானது!

"மூவுலகையும் வெல்லும் திறன் வேண்டும்
மூவாமல் வாழ வேண்டும் நெடுங்காலம்!

தேவர்களால் அழிவின்மை வேண்டும்
தேவர்கள் ஏவல் செய்ய வாழவேண்டும்!"

வேண்டும் வரங்களை அருளிய சிவன்
மீண்டும் அங்கிருந்து மறைந்தருளினர்.

அந்தணர்களாக இருந்தவர்களை வரங்கள்
சொந்த குல ஆசாரங்களை மறக்கடித்தன.

நடாளும் ஆசை மேலோங்கியது மனத்தில்
நராந்தகனுக்குப் பாதாள, பூலோகங்கள்;

தேவலோகத்தை விரும்பினான் தேவாந்தகன்;
தேவலோகத்தை வெல்லச் சென்றான் அவன்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#41a. Mahorkkadar

Roudraketu and his wife Sarada had twins as their sons. The boys were named as Devaantakan and Naraantakan. They were well taken care of by their parents.

Narada visited the earth. They met him and wished to be blessed by him. Narada blessed the boys and taught them panchaakshara mahaa mantram. He told them to meditate on Lord Siva.

The boys left to do penance. They selected a spot near a pond on the bank of which a Siva temple was situated. They had a holy dip in the pond and started their severe penance.

They controlled their indriya and sacrificed food and drink. The penance went on for one thousand years. Siva was pleased with them an appeared in front of them

Originally the boys wishes for moksha but when they saw Siva they asked for other powers. They wished to rule over the three worlds. They wished for a long life span. They wished to become invincible by the Deva. Thy wished to be served by the Deva. Siva granted them everything thy wished for and disappeared.

The boons changed their temperaments. They forgot that they were Brahmins and started behaving like Kshatriya. They wanted to rule over the three worlds. Devaantakan wished to conquer the swargga while Naraantakan wished to conquer the Paataala and the bhooloka.

#41b. தேவாந்தகன்

ஆகாயcமார்க்கமாகச் சென்றான் தேவலோகம்;
ஆகத்தியம் செய்தான் கற்பகச் சோலையில்!

துவம்சம் செய்தான் அழகிய சோலையை,
துவைத்து எடுத்தான் எதிர்த்து வந்தவர்களை.

பூமியிலிருந்து வந்தவனைக் கைதுசெய்ய
ஏவினான் தேவேந்திரன் தன் வீரர்களை!

வரங்களால் வலிமை பெற்ற தேவாந்தகன்,
வீரர்களை வென்றுவிட்டான் மிக எளிதாக.

வந்தான் இந்திரன் தன் ஐராவதத்தில் ஏறி;
வஜ்ஜிராயுததால் அடித்தான் பகைவனை.

உடைந்து சிதறியது அவன் வச்சிராயுதம்!
அடையவில்லை தேவாந்தகன் ஒரு காயம்!

அறைந்தான் ஐராவதத்தின் தலையில் ஓங்கி!
அரற்றியவாறு அது சாய்ந்துவிட்டது தரையில்.

அஞ்சுவது அஞ்சுவதற்கு அறிந்த இந்திரன்
தஞ்சம் அடைந்தான் எங்கோ ஓடிச் சென்று.

அடைந்தான் தேவர்சபையை தேவாந்தகன்
அமர்ந்தான் தேவேந்திரன் அரியணையில்.

"அபாயம் இல்லை என்னால் உங்களுக்கு,
உபாயமாகக் கீழ்ப்படிந்திடும் வரையில்."

பிரம்ம லோகம் சென்றான் தேவாந்தகன்;
பிரமன் ஓடிவிட்டான் அதற்கும் முன்பே.

தேவாந்தகன் சென்றான் பின் வைகுந்தம்.
தேவாந்தகனை வைகுந்தம் வரவேற்றது!

பணிந்து விட்டது விண்ணுலகு முழுதும்;
பணிந்து விட்டது அவன் ஆணைகளுக்கு.

விண்ணுலகை வென்றான் தேவாந்தகன்
மண்ணுலகை வென்றான் தம்பி நராந்தகன்.

பணிந்து விட்டது பாதள உலகமும் - அடி
பணிந்தது நராந்தகனின் ஆணைகளுக்கு.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி.

#41b. Devaantakan

Devaantakan went to Swarggam and destroyed the garden of Indra. He fought everyone who came to stop him. Indra sent his army to arrest 'the man from the earth' who was causing trouble, but Devaantakan won over them easily.

Now Indra himself came on his Airaavat. He hit Devaantakan with his Vajraayudam. The Vajraayudam shattered to pieces but no harm was done to Devaantakan. He hit the head of Indra's elephant Airaavat and it collapsed on the ground moaning with pain.

Indra knew when to quit and when to fight . So he quietly disappeared and took refuge somewhere. Devaantakan came to the Durbar of the Deva. He sat on Indra's throne and spoke to the Deva, "I will not harm any of you as long as you remember to obey my orders!"

He next went to Satyalokam but Brahma had already fled from there. Vaikuntam also welcomed him warmly. So Devaantakan was now the king of the heavens.

Narantakan conquered the earth and paataalaa. The two brothers had conquered all the three worlds thus.

#41c . அதிதி தேவி

கண்டாள் தேவர்கள் படும் துயரை - மனம்
நொந்தாள் தேவமாதா அதிதி தேவியார்.

பணிந்து வேண்டினாள் கணவர் கசியபரிடம்,
துணிந்து தேவர்களைக் காக்க வல்ல மகனை .

"அழிக்க வல்லவர் கணநாதர் ஒருவரே!
வழிபட்டு வணங்கித் தவம் நீ செய்தால்,

குமாரனாக வந்து அவதரிப்பார் - மற்ற
குமாரர்களின் துயர் துடைப்பார்" என்றார்

வனத்துக்குச் சென்ற அதிதி தேவி - தவம்
மனம் ஒன்றிச் செய்தாள் நூறு ஆண்டுகள்!

மனம் கனிந்து காட்சி தந்தார் விநாயகர்,
"மனம் விரும்பும் வரம் என்ன?" என்றார்.

"தேவர்கள் துன்புறுகின்றனர் மனிதனிடம்;
தேவை துயர் துடைக்க வல்ல ஒரு மகன்.

உம்மைத் தவிர எவராலும் அழிவில்லை.
நம்பிக்கை தரப் பிறக்கவேண்டும் மகனாக!".

ஒளிந்து கொண்டிருந்த பிரமதேவனிடம்
ஒன்றாகச் சென்றனர் தேவர்கள்.குழுமி.

'அழிப்பதற்கு உபாயம் கூறுங்கள்!" என
"அழிக்கவல்லவர் விநாயகர் ஒருவரே!"

பிரமன், விஷ்ணு, தேவர்களுடன் கூடி
பிரார்த்தித்தனர் விநாயகர் அருள் நாடி.

விண்ணில் ஓங்கி ஒலித்தது ஓர் அசரீரி,
"விரைவில் உங்கள் துயர் துடைப்பேன்!"

விநாயகர் தோன்றினார் அதிதி முன்பு;
வியப்புக்குரிய அழகிய வடிவம் தரித்து.

வீசிய ஒளியால் கூசின அவள் கண்கள்! .
பாசம் பொங்கியது பார்த்த உடனேயே!

"குழந்தையாக உருமாறிவிட வேண்டும்;
மழலை மொழிகள் பேசவேண்டும்!" என

ஆனார் வினாயகர் பிறந்த குழந்தையாக!
அணைத்துக் கொஞ்சினாள் அதிதி தேவி.

மலர்கள் பூத்து மணம் பரப்பின உலகில்!
மந்த மாருதம் வந்து தழுவியது உலகை!

வந்தனர் தெய்வக் குழந்தையைக் காண;
வணக்கத்துக்கு உரிய முனி புங்கவர்கள்.
