#39z. தூமாசுரன்

அண்டை நாடுகளை வென்று அவற்றை
ஆண்டு வர விரும்பினான் தூமாசுரன்.

படைகள் நடந்தன திக்விஜயத்திற்கு;
திடீர் முடிவு திகைப்பளித்தது பலருக்கு.

தூமாசுரன் கேட்டான் அசரீரி ஒன்றினை,
"சேமமாக ஆட்சி செய்து கொண்டிருந்தாய்!

ஆசை மிகுதியால் படை நடத்துகின்றாய்;
அழிப்பான் உன்னைச் சுமுதையின் மகன்."

திடுக்கிட்டு நின்றான் தூமாசுரன் அதுகேட்டு!
'கெடுத்துக் கொண்டேனோ வாழ்வை நானே?"
'

தருமமூர்த்தி உரைத்தான் தருமத்தை.
"தருமம் தவறி நடந்தால் அழிவு உறுதி!

அருள் வேண்டினால் இல்லை அழிவு.
சரண் புகுவோம் நாம் சுமுதை மகனிடம்!"

சம்மதிக்கவில்லை மற்ற அமைச்சர்கள்.
'இம்மாதிரியான அறிவுரையா தருவது?'

"சரண் அடைவதா சின்னப் பயலிடம்?
சிவன் அருள் பெற்று அழிவற்றவர் நீர்.

பகைவன் பிறப்பான் என்று அறிந்ததும்
பகைவனை அழிக்க வேண்டும் உடனே!

கருவில் உருவான குழந்தையை அழித்தால்,
விரைவில் விடுபடலாம் கவலையிலிருந்து!"

வித்ருமனை வரவழைத்தான் தூமாசுரன்
"சத்ருவை அழிப்பது உன்னுடைய கடமை.

கருவிலே உருவாகும் சுமுதை மகனை
விரைவில் அழித்துவிட்டு வா!" என்றான்.

#39z. Dhoomaasuran

Dhoomaasuran wanted to conquer the neighboring countries and rule over them too. He led his army on a dikvijayam.

People were surprised by this sudden decision. He heard an asareeri then" You used to rule well oh Doomaasuran! Now you have become very greedy and ambitious. Beware! The son of Sumudai will destroy you!"

Dhoomaasuran was shocked! "Have I ruined my own life by this dikvijayam?" One of his ministers Dharma moorthy told him, "If we go against dharma we will be punished. If we seek the grace, we will not be punished. Let us surrender to the son of Sumudai"

The other ministers did not approve of this idea. It was unthinkable to surrender to a small baby. They told Dhoomaasuran, "You have been blessed by Siva and you can not be destroyed by anyone. If we learn about the birth of an enemy we must kill him and be rid of all the worries. Send someone to kill the baby and then you can live without a worry"

Dhoomaasuran called Vidruman and ordered him, "Go forth and destroy the son of Sumudai now!"

Now when I was a little boy, there used to be a something that went

Could you please throw more light on this, the story, context translation etc. - if you have
already posted this elsewhere, please direct me there.

Thanks. If I could read it myself and understand it, I wouldn't have asked Tmt VR
for the tale behind, it a translation and context.

But it so happens that I haven't been in TN or India for a good period of my life
- I barely read sign boards and make sense of bus routes written in Tamil. I've stopped
reading aloud to avoid embarrassment to people around -an MTC bus route like 5T, read aloud,
" Vaada Palani to Taara Mani ", causes people to turn in my direction and give me freaky look.

Thanks anyway, I guess it was too much of an ask.

#39a. வித்ருமன்

மாதவன் அரண்மனையில் நுழைந்தனர்;
தோதாகக் கடத்தினர் கட்டில் சகிதம்

மாதவனையும் சுமுதையையும் காட்டிற்கு!
ஏதும் அறியவில்லை அவர்கள் நித்திரையில்.

அமைதியாக உறங்கும் கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்ணை
அழிக்க மனம் வரவில்லை வித்ருமனுக்கு.

பெண்களைக் கொல்வதே பாவம் - அதிலும்
கர்ப்பிணிகளைக் கொல்வது மகா பாவம்.

கொல்லவும் மனம் வரவில்லை அவனுக்கு;
கொல்லாமல் செல்லவும் வழியில்லை!

இருதலைக் கொள்ளி ஏறும்பானான் அவன்!
அரச கட்டளையா அன்றிக் கருணை உள்ளமா?

கண் விழித்துப் பார்த்த சுமுதை அஞ்சினாள்.
கணவனும் இருந்தான் அருகில் கட்டிலில்;

கட்டில் இருந்தது வெட்டவெளியில், காட்டில்!
கண் எதிரே கொலைப் படைகளுடன் வீர்கள்.

எழுப்பினாள் கணவன் மாதவனை மெல்ல.
எழுந்த மாதவனும் திடுக்கிட்டு அஞ்சினான்.

"தூமாசுரனின் தளபதி வித்ருமன் நான் தான்.
தூமாசுரனை அழிக்குமாம் ஒரு குழந்தை.

வளருகிறதாம் அது அரசியின் கருவில்!
வளர்ந்து ஆளாகக் கூடாது அந்தக் குழந்தை.

அதை அழித்துவிடவந்துள்ளோம் நாங்கள்.
ஆனால் விழித்துக் கொண்டீர்கள் நீங்கள்."

#39 aa. Vidruman

Vidruman and his men entered the palace of Madhavan. They lifted the cot on which Madhavan and Sumudai were sleeping and kidnapped them easily to the nearby forest. Since they were in deep sleep they did not realize this.

Sumudai was sleeping quietly and Vidurman could not bring himself to kill her. He knew it was a sin to kill a woman and killing a pregnant woman was a greater sin. But he could not disobey Dhoomaasuran without losing his own head! He was in a real dilemma as to whether to obey the king's order or the principles of dharma?

Meahwhile Sumudai woke up. She was on her cot with her husband but the cot was in the middle of a jungle and they were surrounded by the enemy soldiers with deadly weapons.

She woke up Madhavan quietly. He got the shock of his life to see the armed killers. Vidruman spoke to them, "I am the army chief of Dhoomaasuran. My name is Vidruman. We learned that a child will be born to destroy Dhoomaasuran. That child is growing in the womb of this queen Sumudai. We have been sent to kill the baby. You woke up before we could do our job"a

Here is the poem (in thanglish - for your sake)

Poet Kambar asked a riddle to Avvaiyaar 'oru kAladi; nAlilaip pandhaladi' which meant Araik keerai

which has four part leaves. Since 'di' came twice, Avvaiyaar gave this harsh reply with a 'dA' added!

Meaning:

ettEkAl lakshNamE = avakshaNamE - since Tamil numbers 8 and 1/4 are written as a-va;

emanERum pariyE - Lord Yama's vAhanam = buffalo;

mattil periyammai vAganamE - MoodEvi's vAganam = donkey;

muttamER kooraiyillaa veedE - roofless house = kuttich chuvarE;

kularaaman ThoodhuvanE - Lord Rama's messenger = monkey;

AraiyadA chonnAyadhu" - you said Araik keerai -dA!

Two 'di's brought back a full 'archanai' for Kambar! :kev:
 
#39b. வனவீரர்கள்

சுமுதை நடுநடுங்கினாள் இதைக் கேட்டு;
சுமுகமாகத் தப்பிக்க முயற்சி செய்தாள்.

"கருணை கொண்ட உள்ளம் தங்களுக்கு;
கருணை காட்டுங்கள் ஒரு கர்ப்பிணிக்கு."

"கொல்லாமல் உங்களை விட்டுவிட்டால்
கொல்லப் படுவேன் தூமாசுரனால் நான்!"

சுமுதை இறைவனைப் பிரார்த்தித்தாள்,
அமுதை நிகர்த்த இனிய சொற்களால்.

வீரர்கள் தோன்றினர் அந்த வனத்தில்!
வீழ்த்தினர் எளிதில் வித்ருமன் வீரரை!

நிராயுதபாணியாக நின்றான் வித்ருமன்;
மறைந்துவிட்டனர் மாயப்படை வீரர்கள்.

ஓடிச் சென்று சொன்னான் தூமாசுரனிடம்;
கடிந்து கொண்டான் அவனைத் தூமாசுரன்.

"அரண்மனையிலேயே அழித்திருக்கலாமே!
ஆரண்யத்துக்குக் கொண்டு சென்றது ஏன்?

உருவாகும் கருவையும் அழிக்கவில்லை;
உருப்படியாக எதையுமே செய்யவில்லை!"

உடைவாளை உருவினான் தூமாசுரன்;
படைத் தலைவனின் சிரம் உருண்டது.

அமைச்சர் கூறினார் தூமாசுரனிடம்,
"அனைத்தும் நம் நன்மைக்கே அரசே!

எதிரி மாதவனோ, மனைவியோ அல்ல!
எதிரி பிறக்கப் போகும் குழந்தை தான்.

கர்ப்பிணிப் பெண்ணைக் கொன்றால்,
கண் மூடித்தனமாக நம்மை ஏசுவர்!

காலம் கனிந்திடக் காத்திருப்போம் நாம்;
ஞாலம் செய்யாததைக் காலம் செய்யும்.

குழந்தை பிறந்ததை அறிந்த பிறகு அதை
அழிக்கும் முயற்சியில் ஈடுபடுவோம்."

தூமாசுரன் அடைந்தான் மன அமைதி
"ஏமாற மாட்டேன் நான் அடுத்த முறை!"

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி
 
#39 bb. Mysterious soldiers

Sumudai trembled with fear on hearing these words. She tried her luck to escape unhurt. She told Vidruman, "Sir! you are a kind-hearted man. Please do not hurt a pregnant women who has done no harm to anyone'" But Vidruman replied to her, "If I don't kill you, I will be killed by Dhoomaasuran"

Now Sumudai had none but her god to save her and her husband. She prayed sincerely to her god. Some mysterious soldiers appeared there suddenly. They fought with the soldiers of Vidruman and killed all of them. Vidruman was spared alive but he had lost all his weapons. The mysterious soldiers disappeared as mysteriously as they had appeared from nowhere.

Vidruman ran to Dhoomaasuran and reported the happenings. Dhoomaasuran was not happy with this. He took to task Vidruman and asked, "You could have killed them in their palace. Why did you have to take them to the forest? You did not kill them! You did not kill the fetus. You have not done anything I told you to do". He drew out his sword and Vidruman's head rolled on the ground.

A minister consoled him thus,"All is for our own good. Madhavan and his wife are not our enemies. Only the child in the womb is. If we kill a pregnant woman, we will be blamed by everyone. Let us wait till the child is born and then we can destroy it. Let us wait for the right time to do this"

Dhoomaasuran calmed down on hearing these words. He said to himself, "I will be more careful next time"

#39 cc. பாலச்சந்திரன்

நாட்டுக்குத் திரும்பவில்லை இருவரும்;
காட்டிலேயே வாழக் கற்றுக்கொண்டனர்.

கனி, கிழங்குகளை உண்ணலாயினர்;
தனிமையில் திரிந்தனர் கானகத்தில்.

நெருங்கி விட்டது சுமுதையின் பிரசவம்,
விரும்பி வந்தார் குழந்தையாக விநாயகர்.

நான்கு கரங்களில் நான்கு ஆயுதங்கள்,
மூன்று கண்களுடன் அதிசயக் குழந்தை.

அணைத்துக் கொண்டாள் அழகிய குழவியை,
வினவினாள் அவனைப் பற்றிய விவரங்களை.

"பாலசந்திரன் என்பார்கள் என்னை - உன்
பக்திக்கு மெச்சி வந்துள்ளேன் முன்பும்!

வரமளித்தேன் விஷ்ணுவாகத் தோன்றி!
வனத்தில் காத்தேன் வீரர்களை அனுப்பி!

தூமாசுரன் விரும்புகிறான் கருவை அழிக்க.
ஏமாற்ற வந்தேன் சிறு குழந்தையாக மாறி!"

சுற்றிச் சுற்றி வந்து கொண்டே இருந்தனர்
ஒற்றர்கள் பிரசவத்தை எதிர்நோக்கியவாறு.

பிரசவம் ஆகும் முன்னரே சுமுதை மடியில்
பிரகாசமான குழவியைக் கண்டு வியந்தனர்!

ஓடினர் உடனே மன்னன் தூமாசுரனிடம்;
மடியில் குழந்தையைப் பற்றிக் கூறினர்.

"நான்கு கரங்கள், மூன்று கண்கள் கொண்ட
நானிலத்தில் அதிசயமான ஒரு குழந்தை!"

சதுரங்க சேனை தயாரானது போருக்கு!
அதிசயக் குழந்தையை அழிப்பது எளிதா?

படை நடந்து அடைந்தது அந்த வனத்தை.
படை சூழ்ந்து கொண்டது அந்த வனத்தை

Madhavan and Sumudai did not go back to their palace for the fear of getting killed by Dhoomaasuran. They learned to survive in the forest by eating the fruits and roots.

They roamed around in the forest undisturbed. The time for the birth of Sumudai's baby was nearing fast.

Vinayaka appeared there as a small child. He had three lovely eyes and four arms holding on to four weapons. Sumudai embraced the unusual child and asked about him.

The child replied," I am called a Baalachandran. I have appeared to you before as Vishnu to grant you boons. I sent some soldier to save you from the killers and Vidruman. Dhoomaasuran wants to kill your baby. I have come here as a small child to deceive him."

The spies were watching Sumudai all the time. They had to report the birth of the child to Dhoomaasuran. They were surprised to see a small baby on Sumudai's lap - even before her baby had been born! They ran to report this to Dhoomaasuran.

They told him, "There is a baby on the queen's lap. It has four arms and three eyes and is indeed an unusual child."

An army got ready since it was not going to be easy to kill a strange child with four arms and three eyes. The army marched towards the forest and surrounded it completely.

காட்டை அடைந்த அசுரர்களின் படை,
கோட்டை போலக் காத்தது அக்காட்டை.

பாண மழை பொழிந்தான் தூமாசுரன்,
பாலச்சந்திரன் இருந்தான் தாய்மடியில்.

சீறி வந்தன அசுரனின் பாணங்கள்!
வீரமாக எழுந்து நின்றான் குழந்தை.

கறுத்த மேகங்கள் குவிந்தது போல
மறைத்துக் கொண்டன பாணங்கள்.

குழந்தையை மூடிக் கொண்டது கண்டு
குமுறினர் மனம் மாதவனும் சுமுதையும்.

"எனக்கு ஒரு பயமும் இல்லை அம்மா!"
என்றவன் வாயிலிருந்து புகை மண்டலம்!

மெல்லப் பரவியது புகை மண்டலம்
கள்ள அரக்கர்களைச் சூழ்ந்தது புகை.

கவிழ்ந்தது காரிருள் போலப் புகை.
காரிருள் விலகியது மெல்ல மெல்ல.

படையை அங்கு காணவே காணோம்!
படை பஸ்பமாகி அழிந்தனர் வீரர்கள்!

தூமாசுரன் வந்தான் பெரும் படையுடன்;
தூம மண்டலத்தில் அழிந்துபோனான்.

தூமாசுரனைத் தூமத்தால் வென்றவன்
தூமகேது என்று புதிய பெயர் பெற்றான்.

மாதவன், சுமுதையை அனுகிரஹித்து
மறைந்து அருளினான் பாலச்சந்திரன்.

நாரணன் பிறந்தான் சுமுதையின் மகனாக.
மாறாத அன்பு செலுத்தினான் பெற்றோரிடம்

நாட்டை ஆண்டான் நன்றாக நெடுங்காலம்
நற்கதி அளித்தான் தன்னைப் பெற்றோருக்கு!

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி
 
#39 dd. Dhoomaketu

The army of asura reached the forest and surrounded it guarding it like a fortress. Dhoomaasuran showered arrows on Baalachandran. The child stood up bravely on his mother's lap. The arrows covered the child completely like dense black clouds. Madhavan and Sumudai were afraid about the safety of the child.

"Nothing has happened to me mother!" the child Baalachandran spoke and they could see black fumes emanating from his mouth. The fumes became darker and denser and covered the asura army like pitch darkness. When the fumes cleared after some time no one was there. All the asura had turned into ash.

Dhoomaasuran had come with a huge army and the child Baalachandran had killed the army with his own fumes. He was praised a Dhoomaketu. He blessed Madhavan and Sumudai and disappeared.

Vishnu was born as Sumduai's son on the due day. He grew up well and respected and loved his parents. He ruled the country well for a long time. He gave moksha to his parents and liberated them from the cycle of birth and death.

#40a. கஜமுக அசுரன்

அசுரர்கள் தோற்றனர் தேவர்களிடம் போரில்;
அசுரர்கள் ஓடி ஒளிந்தனர் தேவருக்கு அஞ்சி.

தேவை அசுரர்களின் வாழ்வு மீண்டும் தழைக்கத்
தேவர்களை வெல்லும் வலிமையுடைய அசுரன்.

மாதவம் புரிந்து கொண்டிருந்தார் மாகதர்;
மகத்துவம் வாய்ந்த மகனைத் தரவல்லவர்.

அசுரகன்னி சென்று அவருடன் கூடினால்
அசர வைக்கும் அசுரர்கள் பலர் தோன்றுவர்.

விபுதை ஒரு மிக அழகிய அரக்கக் கன்னி;
விவரம் சொல்லி அனுப்பினர் முனிவரிடம்.

முனிவரின் தவத்தைக் கலைக்கவில்லை;
இனிய தவத்தில் எதிரே அமர்ந்தாள் அவள்.

தவம் கலைந்த முனிவர் கண்டது என்ன?
தாபத்துடன் கூடி மகிழும் இரு யானைகள்!

காம வசப்பட்டார் கண நேரத்தில் முனிவர்;
கண்டார் கண்ணெதிரில் அழகிய தபஸ்வினி!

"கணவனுடன் இளமையை அனுபவிக்காமல்
கானகத்தில் என்ன செய்கிறாய் பெண்ணே?"

"மணம் இன்னமும் ஆகவில்லை முனிபுங்கவா!
மனம் பறி போய்விட்டது உங்களைக் கண்டதும்.

மணந்தால் உங்களையே மணப்பது என்று
மனவுறுதியுடன் நான் காத்திருக்கிறேன்!"

தேனை நிகர்த்த இனிய மொழிகள்!
மானை நிகர்த்த சலிக்கும் விழிகள்!

ரதியையும் நாணச் செய்யும் மேனி எழில்;
குதிபோடும் இளமையின் மதமதர்ப்பு கண்டு

தன்னையும் மறந்தார்; தவத்தையும் மறந்தார்;
பெண் யார் என்பதையும் கூட அறியவில்லை.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி
 
#40a. Gajamukha asuran

The asura were defeated by the Deva and went into hiding. To bring back their happy days, they needed powerful asuras who could win over the Deva.

Maagathar was doing severe penance. He could give might asura sons - if an asura kanya would go to him and infatuate him. Vibudha was a beautiful asura kanya. She was selected for this task and sent to the sage Maagathar.

Vibudha did not disturb the penance of Maagathar but sat in front of him like a tapasvini. When Maagathar came out of his penance, he saw two elephants playing amorously. He was aroused by their sight. He then saw the beautiful tapasvini sitting in his front. He spoke to her,

"Why do you waste your youth and beauty in doing penance instead of enjoying with your husband? Vibudha replied,
" I am not yet married. You have stolen my heart. I can't marry anyone else. So I am waiting for you"

Her words were sweeter than honey and her eyes were prettier than those of a doe. She was more beautiful than Rati Devi and he could not resist any more. He forgot himself, he forgot his penance and he did not bother to find out who that beautiful girl really was!

#40b. கஜமுக அசுரன்

பெண் யானையாக மாறினாள் விபுதை,
ஆண் யானையாக மாறினார் மாகதர்.

காதலுடன் கூடிய இருவருக்கும் பிறந்தான்
கஜமுகன் என்னும் வலிமை வாய்ந்த அசுரன்.

பெண் யானையின் மயிர்க்கால்களில் இருந்து
எண்ணிறந்த அசுர வீரர்கள் உற்பத்தி ஆயினர்.

தவம் செய்யும் முனிவர் மக்கள் அசுரர்களா?
குலம், நலம் அறியாமல் கூடியதன் விளைவு!

"பெண்ணே! நீ யார் உண்மையைக் கூறு!"
"முனிபுங்கவா! நான் அசுர கன்னி விபுதை.

தேவை தேவர்களை வெல்லும் மகன் எனத்
தேடி வந்தேன் நான் தவசீலர் ஆகிய உம்மை.

ஆசி கூறி வாழ்த்துங்கள் நம் மகனை,
அசுரர்களிடம் கூட்டிச் செல்லும் முன்"

"தேவர்களுக்குத் தகுந்த எதிரி பிறந்தான்!"
தேனாக அசுரர்களுக்கு இனித்தது செய்தி

குலகுரு கூறினார் கஜமுக அசுரனிடம்,
"பலம் மிக்கவனாக ஆகவேண்டும் நீ!

தவம் செய்வாய் சிவனைக் குறித்து
தவம் பெற்றுத் தரும் அரிய வரங்கள்.

வரம் அளிப்பதில் வள்ளல் சிவபிரான்;
வரம் தரும் உலகை ஆளும் வலிமை."

கானகம் சென்றான்; தவம் புரிந்தான்;
காணக் கிடைத்தது சிவன் தரிசனம்

தேவர்களால் அழிவின்மை பெற்றான்.
மூவுலகை ஆளும் வலிமை பெற்றான்

தலைநகர் ஆனது மாதங்கபுரம் - அவனைத்
தலை வணங்கினர் மூவுலகத்தினரும் கூடி.

அடிமைப் படுத்தினான் தேவ சமூஹத்தை
அடிபணிந்த தேவர் புரிந்தனர் குற்றேவல்.

வாழ்க வளமுடன், விசாலாக்ஷி ரமணி
