Last Thrusday on Avani Avittam day, V B Chandrasekhar, an Engineer and former India Cricketer committed suicide by hanging. The reason is debts. Those who have followed him during his cricket playing days would not have even imagined this. I had been a regular visitor to Senior Division League matches during 1970s and 1980s and he joined my favourite team Jolly Rovers in 1986 and played for several seasons. Though he was from an affluent family, due to heavy debts he mortgaged even his house to settle the dues.
After retirement, he had taken up coaching and formed his coaching club, which was successful. It is said he purchased a team in the Tamil Nadu League which involved huge money. Such ventures normally will be undertaken only by big industrial houses. It is not known why he has taken this risk as an individual.
Some years back, film personality G Venkateswaran, a Chartered Accountant, popularly known as GV committed suicide due to debts. One of this brothers died due to accident while trekking and another brother is the famous Tamil film director Manirathnam.
In both instances, one can see some similarities. Both were professionals and both had taken lot of risks in their ventures, which ultimately failed. It is not known whether they were misguided by their friends or enemies cleverly which ultimately led to suicide.
The two incidents also clearly indicate that the Tamil speaking Iyer community is not in good shape. It is terribly scattered and there is no back up at all when situation demands. There is no unity at all among Iyers. Only two terms Brahmin and Iyer bring together at the time of marriage. There are serious differences even among Sankara Mutt followers.
Iyer enterprises in Tamil Nadu are going down one by one - Enfield, Standard Motors, Gemini Studios etc. The saying Iyers are good Managers and Advisers but not good Businessmen.
It is time for the Iyer community in Tamil Nadu to wake from deep sleep and set things right before it is too late.
