SUICIDE OF V B CHANDRASEKHAR

Last Thrusday on Avani Avittam day, V B Chandrasekhar, an Engineer and former India Cricketer committed suicide by hanging. The reason is debts. Those who have followed him during his cricket playing days would not have even imagined this. I had been a regular visitor to Senior Division League matches during 1970s and 1980s and he joined my favourite team Jolly Rovers in 1986 and played for several seasons. Though he was from an affluent family, due to heavy debts he mortgaged even his house to settle the dues.

After retirement, he had taken up coaching and formed his coaching club, which was successful. It is said he purchased a team in the Tamil Nadu League which involved huge money. Such ventures normally will be undertaken only by big industrial houses. It is not known why he has taken this risk as an individual.

Some years back, film personality G Venkateswaran, a Chartered Accountant, popularly known as GV committed suicide due to debts. One of this brothers died due to accident while trekking and another brother is the famous Tamil film director Manirathnam.

In both instances, one can see some similarities. Both were professionals and both had taken lot of risks in their ventures, which ultimately failed. It is not known whether they were misguided by their friends or enemies cleverly which ultimately led to suicide.

The two incidents also clearly indicate that the Tamil speaking Iyer community is not in good shape. It is terribly scattered and there is no back up at all when situation demands. There is no unity at all among Iyers. Only two terms Brahmin and Iyer bring together at the time of marriage. There are serious differences even among Sankara Mutt followers.

Iyer enterprises in Tamil Nadu are going down one by one - Enfield, Standard Motors, Gemini Studios etc. The saying Iyers are good Managers and Advisers but not good Businessmen.

It is time for the Iyer community in Tamil Nadu to wake from deep sleep and set things right before it is too late.

Agree..good post.

Tam brams should look to form a industry forum where all top entrepreneurs should come together and support the Businesses during downturn.

Also community can look to come closer and support each other during crisis..they can also support senior citizens in terms of money and sustainance. I see some really struggling on this Front.

Of course, I hope Vijay Mallya is also a Brahmin.

Yes. Vijay Mallya is Gaud Saraswat Brahmin, which is a powerful sect. Gavaskar, Sachin, Dilip Sardesai, Prakash Padukone, Suresh Prabhu, late Manohar Parikkar belonged to this sect. Their presence is in Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

I mentioned about Tamil Iyers.

Comparing this i remember my mumbai days when in iron market one gujju lost heavily in his business and became totally bankrupt.immediately all the gujju business men contributed solved his debts and diverted a portion of their orders to his company and uplifted him back to his feet. And in these days a meagre 4 or 5 crores can't be collected thru his well wishers? I still wonder .

I agree. as a community we need to do a much better job of collaborating and supporting each other. We're too self-centric and don't stand up for ourselves and each other as a community. We'll need to find ways and venues to bring us together, identify common causes we'll need to support financially and physically.

Yes I do agree. Even in Tamilnadu there are communities which help their people when they are in distress. Brahmins Community can have a trust or society to help their people on loan basis and at low interest. Unity is required.

We are not only self centric. Intellectual and status enemities are present amongst family members themselves and we feel proud to be the only best among our family or community. We are proud in saying that when my grandfather comes in the court, judges used to get up and say namaskaram. Our another side of Brahmins are busy in collecting funds in name of programs like bajans, rada Kalyanam Seetha Kalyanam, etc. Basically some of us have a sadistic mentality, who spoils the helping Brahmins also. We have Sangama and amongst them there are fights as to who is authorised. Many of our mentality is airport guest and air traveller mentality where the traveller expects every time the guest to send off him or receive him at airport and cannot digest the guest to travel in air. Until that gets changed we have no solution.

Now Chandru Ji,

Why should one expect the community to come to his aid when in distress or when in debts...?

Does he consulted the community before taking such risks...?

What does he done for his own community in the past....?

What is his contribution for the betterment of the community..?

When people are wealthy, rich and affluent, they don't bother about the community at all.

More of them don't even join the Tamil Brahmins Association and pay annual subscription which is only a meager amount.

And this subscription amount is being used by providing various noble services to poor members, for initiating multi various steps for the retention of our culture and heritage, extending financial assistance to the most deserving poor boys/girls in getting books and paying school/college fees besides providing matrimonial services for its members.

One should know that if they are rich, they should NOT leave their community people behind to suffer. Extend possible assistance to the needy with empathy. It is said that help rendered to the poor/needy is like help rendered to the GOD.

Please do something to the community first then....................

sounds like quid pro quo.

why not TBs learn from some of the Malayalam speaking Non-Brahmin communities like Nairs, Menons!!!

They exercise/exhibit camaraderie, unity like none else. This is the reason they are ubiquitous.

are these traits prevalent only among TBs?

Sir

You are a typical self centered B.

Basically you have no interest to help the community and for this you raised so many points.

For each and every activity we should not expect approval.Instead we must appreciate those who are venturing new projects and help them in case of difficulty.

Community cannot survive and thrive without support.

Jains, Marwaris, Parsis are perfect examples.
