You may remember the wonderful speech given by Tharoor to the British parliamentarians some time back explaining how Britain exploited India in full to their advantage when India was a British colony and exhorted that Britain should pay reparation charges for the same. In continuation of that, he has now published a book how Britain is not all that great as claimed by historians and what it gave to India is a pittance to what it exploited out of India and how it has been responsible for the exploitation of the break up of India and the introduction of caste factor in Indian politics. He also explains how the congress party fell a prey to its own game for the creation of Pakistan. It gives a new dimension to the Indian history under British rule and how very truculent they were in not only not punishing general Dyer but also honouring him as a saviour of India. His approach to the problem is very different from what our erstwhile historians have been saying about the golden rule of the British.

Here’s a riddle for you: Samuel was born first, but his twin brother Ronan is older. How is that possible?

Heard of ‘daylight saving hours’? Samuel was born at 1:39am on Nov 6 and by the time Ronan was born 31 minutes later, the time must have been 2:10am, but due to daylight saving hours ending at midnight for the year, the time fell back by an hour, making Ronan’s official time of birth 1:10am.

Daylight saving time (DST) or summer time is the practice of advancing clocks during summer months by one hour so that evening daylight lasts an hour longer, while sacrificing normal sunrise times. Typically, regions with summer time adjust clocks forward one hour close to the start of spring and adjust them backward in the autumn to standard time. This took place in US on Nov 6th midnight and the clock was set back by one hour.

A real episode in my life which I would like to share with you

My first night in the hostel, 1952

Don't let your imagination run riot. This is just a narration of my experience on the first night of my stay at Clive's Hostel at Thiruchy, which is an out and out Agmark men's hostel. When I got admission for my intermediate at St Joseph's College, Thiruchy, I was offered a seat at Clive's Hostel. The college and the hostel were well known for discipline and students of our time in the fifties didn't have even a ghost of an idea of going on strike or protest as we witness today, even though there might have been genuine reasons for that. 'There is no question why, there is but to do and die' was the type of discipline that was expected. Implicit obedience was the only thing known to these St Josephians and even a semblance of disobedience by students would be viewed seriously, severe warning would be issued and at times ( not just at times; more often) fined with a notice sent to the parents of the trouble mongers with threat of dismissal in extreme cases. Clive's hostel had its own set of rules and the principal of the college was the warden. Silence hour extending from 8:00 P.M to next day 8:30A.M was strictly observed and any body indulging in talking with his room mate or his neighbour during the period would be warned and fined. No hosteller was permitted to stay outside the hostel without the express permission of the warden. All the hostellers should be back in the hostel before 8:00 P.M. Any late comer stood the chance of expulsion from the hostel. In spite of the strict enforcement of discipline, during the non silence and noncollege hours, the students however ventured to indulge in jibes silently within themselves and one such joke was that the buildings at the college were fine buildings because they were all constructed using funds raised from students by way of fines!

When the bell rang at 8:30A.M , it meant that the silence hour was over and within the next one hour the wards could get ready and go to their mess for morning food or breakfast as the case might be. Similarly the bell at 7:00P.M was to draw the attention of the students that it was time for night meals. But as a fresher, I had some misconceptions about these rules and regulations but as one, very docile and disciplined, I didn't have anything to fear. I was allotted room number 90 in the New Block which was a 6 seater room. There were some seniors with me and one was my classmate from my native place Ariyalur. That night being the first night, I finished my meal and from 8:00 P.M, I didn't have anything to prepare or study and so didn't know what to do. My seniors had already warned me that the warden would come on a roll call at 10:00P.M and till then I had to keep myself awake. Nobody was allowed to go to bed before then and if any one was found sleeping, the warden would pull him up, warn him and then ask him to go to bed and sleep. So I was waiting for the roll call and when that was over, for some reason, I didn't get sleep and so started talking with my Ariyalur friend thinking that once the roll call was over, we were free. As the talk proceeded unhampered, I put a puzzle to my friend and asked him to give me the right answer. He thought for a while, blinked for a while and then gave up. When I gave him the answer, he said that it was silly. Then the argument grew, me calling him silly and he calling me silly. Normally even if I whisper, people hundred feet away from me could here me ( not now). But during the argument my voice gradually picked up decibels and became so loud with the tempo increasing minute by minute that the warden who was in the old block some five hundred feet away came to my room and knocked it loud, but that got subdued in the den that we created. Meanwhile my other room mates who could hear the tapping of the door opened it only to see a fiery red eyed warden losing his temper with his already red face becoming redder (!) like a red hot iron and in all his fury started bombarding us for nearly more than fifteen minutes, but one good thing was that I couldn't follow anything of what he said. I could only guess that he was furious and admonishing us in the strongest of terms with a warning which I later on understood from my other friends and seniors that it being the first night we were excused and if a repeat performance occurred we would be summarily dismissed from the hostel. There was dead silence in the hostel thereafter while many inquisitive heads were found outside their rooms eager to know who those dare devils were who made history in the hostel. The next day morning once the silence hour broke, a whole lot of people from the old, middle and the new blocks came, some to condole, some to console and some to condemn me wondering all the while how such a small fellow could make such a big noise, while even the diehards in the hostel dared not make noise during silence hours. ( It was at that time Abdul Kalam was staying in this hostel)

That was my first night experience and thereafter I became warden's one of the pet students.
probably, people of my days who stayed in Clive's hostel may have similar experience. I do not know whether the hostel follows these rules even to day.

BJP MP triggers row, seeks Dalit quota in national cricket team. News

I just joked about it sometimes back. But it no more seems to be a joke.

This proves that fools do not belong to any single party. They are there in every party. This is the limit of absurdity and stupidity. Tomorrow some other political genius may extends this reservation demand to travel by state buses, trains and flights too. Why not fight for reservation of gold medals to Indians in Olympics? Then there will be sure chance of India getting a few gold medals.

Ashtami and Navami are considered inauspicious days as per our tradition to start new ventures. But what baffles me regarding this is that Lord Krishna was born on an Ashtami (Gokulashtami) and Lord Rama was born on a Navami (Ramanavami), two gods born on two inauspicious days!

I surmise that that is probably why Rama suffered and is still getting curses till this day from people like Karunanidhi

and Krishna died young with his clan totally wiped out! ( This is just my own guess to justify the belief of those few who believe in it)

Gala wedding becomes the talk of the town ( Bengaluru)

At a time when people are struggling to exchange their currency notes of high denomination, the heavenly wedding of the former Minister Janardhana Reddy's daughter( estimated expenditure 500 crores) as seen never before has raised several doubts in the minds of the ordinary citizen of this country like me.

It reminds me of the wedding of Jayalalitha's foster son in Chennai some years back that landed Jayalalitha in troubles thereon. Is history going to repeat?

Amidst demonetisation politics, a change for you.
A "white dosa" served in a hotel at Ramavaram, Chennai makes sad but interesting reading. Trump seems to have a lot of admirers here on the fond hope that he will be considerate for Hindus and India, forgetting the fact he is also a politician who talks to suit the occasion and is capable of tongue twisting like any other politician in the world. But the obnoxious thing is the term white dosa, not realising that the white there stands for racism. To keep the dosa white they don't roast it, make it brown and crunchy. We Indians still seem to be mystified by the colour "white"

Served hot, a Donald Trump dosa in Chennai
Donald Trump’s win might still raise eyebrows in the U.S., but the President-elect is hugely popular at Suprabaa, a modest hotel located at Valluvar Salai in Ramapuram. So much that C.P. Mukund Das,

U.S.-born panda twins struggle in China as they know only English: news

Does this US- born Panda understand only American accent or British accent?

Language problem doesn't seem to be confined only to people like us. We know cases of elephants, dogs and cats trained to understand the language of their masters. When three different dogs from three different countries meet, will there be a language conflict? I think no. They have a common language 'wow, wow" and wagging of their tail. That is their sign language which is a universal language. A universal language solves all your linguistic jingoism.

we have heard of sheiks owning gold covered cars and rich people indulging in using gold as a symbol of their wealth in umpteen ways. we never would have thought that the filthy rich will use gold for filthy purposes such as toilets.
Throne of Gold
Vladimir Lenin may or may not have been punning when he said that gold toilets would be useful reminders of capitalist waste. But a Hong Kong jeweler took him at his word: This 24-karat solid gold toilet in the city's 3-D Gold Shop will set you back a cool $3.5 mil.

this is a case of human values and so we have to look at this news not as a political gesture but as a wonderful humane act of a poor cop out of his sincere\ity as a human being

Traffic cop offers kidney to 'good leader' Sushma Swaraj News

Generally there is a feeling that Cops are subhumans. No. There are humans among them also as we see in the above case. Kudos to this cop who has come forward to donate his kidney. I think this may stimulate many others also to come forward for kidney donation to a worthy leader of the nation.

Tirumala temple untouchedby demonetisation storm. News

In fact the Hundi collections have reached an all time record after demonetisation partly because moneyed people have immense faith in depositing offerings to the Lord either as cash or as jewellery ( instead of paying taxes). Incidentally it serves the boodlers to dispose of the unaccounted money in the form of 500 and 1000 rupee notes in the Hundi here partly to satisfy the lord and mostly to cheat the government and thus satisfy themselves. Whichever way it is done, it helps the government at present.

The present generation students, particularly those from cities and towns may not have any idea about the issue discussed here. It is for their information that I am presenting these facts.

Nowadays we have developed a fancy, a fascination for English language. In my younger days we had no such fancy, but on the other hand, we had a positive hatred for English nurtured by our local patriots, since we were at that time under the British and the entire country was seething with anger against the British rule. So we were justly proud about our anti English stance and patted ourselves on our back for being such staunch patriots. In fact we were made to believe that all those favouring English were pro British and therefore traitors. In such a surcharged situation, there was one pro British person (according to us) in our family circle. He was working as a schoolmaster in the local board high school. He always felt bad that nobody in the village could speak in English. He chastised us students for not showing any interest to speak in English. He used to say that when even beggars in England could speak English, why you boys were not able to speak in English! He was teaching English for the eighth standard and the fun is that we have never heard him speak in English any time anywhere including in the class room. The strange thing was that English was taught to us only in Tamil from fourth standard (that was when English as a language was introduced) up to SSLC! (I think this practice is still in vogue in all the Tamil medium government schools in Tamilnadu). We have also not heard of English medium schools nor seen anyone speaking in English in our village at that time. So English was always an anathema to most of us and we were afraid of not only English but also of those who spoke in English. Even today I get dreams very often in which I dread to face English examination!

The first time I ever heard of people talking in English was when I went to college at Thiruchy to do my intermediate course after completing my schooling. All classes there were handled in English be it English or Sanskrit, Maths, Physics, or Chemistry and I was surprised to see a few students conversing in English and that caused jitters in me. I really felt fish out of water for one full term. (I could understand the plight of those students who study in Tamil medium joining English medium colleges).

I don't think that there are only five ways of cheating the government on demonetisation. I am afraid our cine and serial playwrights may suggest million ways. Some of our Indians are crooks who know how to dodge and escape law. With the opposition consisting of several such crooks like Kejriwals, Mamatas and Mayavathis, not to belittle Karunanidhis who know how to circumvent law and indulge in scientific corruption and loot, no wonder in thr next few months the second round of their game will commence, unless the purpose of demonetisation is carried right through in all sincerity in the next few years. Punishing the culprits with heavy fines and imprisonment alone can help to reduce if not altogether eliminate the menace of black money. Complete digitisation and preventing cash transaction can help in this regard. Unfortunately there is no national pride in this country and the cheats are considered heroes by the public and until this thinking changes, it is very difficult to revolutionise the system and cleansing the country of illegal transactions. All individuals should realise this.

No time to add fresh security features in new notes, says official. News

Was it done in haste? With the type of people and the politicians we are dealing with in our country, even when we take all security steps, there will be elements to out beat the system to their advantage and get the government into deep trouble. So according to the official's statement, it sounds that the security features are incomplete and not foolproof. This is enough for the perverts in our society to play havoc.

Four year-old dies while waiting for father to withdraw. News

See the hypocrisy of our people. Those standing in the queue did not have the mind and the heart to permit the man carrying the sick child to go first to withdraw money. When the child died, they are going on protest. What to call these fellows. Everyone seems to be interested in playing politics over dead bodies. This doesn't bode well for our country.

In olden days some sixty years back, every family used to have a family doctor. Today that tribe has become extinct. The present trend is to go to specialists even for small ailments. You are asked to undergo so many tests which cost quite a fortunate only to come to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong with the patient. Many times it may be a simple cold for which, one has to part with a valuable part of his earnings. We don't have to resort to patty ( grand mother) vaidhiyam ( treatment)- some are really very good-but we can at least go to a generalist first and based on his advice, if necessary, go to a specialist. The specialists are costly, the equipment and tests are costlier and your disease becomes costliest. Family doctor generally knows the problem of each and every one in the house, their medical history and will be in a better position to pinpoint the problem if it is within his ambit. Otherwise he will suggest a specialist well known to him and thus there will be a personal touch with the doctor or doctors whom you meet which helps to heal diseases much better, because of the confidence that you repose. Today since such a system has been given good bye, the medical treatment in our country which in mist cases within the means of the poor have become the exclusive privilege of the upper middle class and the rich with the result, those who can't afford go to quacks.

Demonetisation: Jumping queue triggers chaos fist fight outside SBI branch. News

This is typically Indian, irrespective of one is educated or illiterate. I have not seen this happening in States, UK and other countries. This is a question of self discipline, which we Indians lack. Whether it is a theatre or train ticket counter, you find people gushing through and rushing fast, jumping queues and if it is a traffic on road, jumping signals and caring the least for road rules. In short we take pleasure in breaking rules even at the cost of breaking the back of the person before us and we consider it heroism and masculine. A country with people full of indiscipline mocking at people who go by rules is the most unfortunate. When are we going to learn discipline? People think that discipline is against their fundamental liberty to physically and mentally hurt others.

A cinematic scene

A driver of a vehicle carrying cash worth Rs. 1.37 crore to a Bank of India ATM on KG Road, Bangalore has fled with the money. The incident reportedly happened at 2 p.m. The driver — a contract employee — belongs to Logicash Solutions security agency.

The West Division police have formed four special teams to nab the driver. The security company has been summoned for questioning.

When two staffers of the company got down and went to a bank to withdraw cash and a security guard moved out without his weapon to go to a washroom, the driver drove away with new notes of Rs. 100 and Rs. 500.

Ridiculous. How can the security leave the van, leaving the driver alone in the van? The driver must be a Kejriwal fan. Hand him over to Kejriwal and the driver will be suitably rewarded. Security needs to be beefed up on such occasions. Anyway since the driver is from a known security(!) agency, it should not be difficult to arrest him. But will the entire cash be recoverable?

Jan Dhan accounts mobilise Rs 21,000 crore after demonetisation: news

Poor man's account pops up suddenly to reach an all time high after demonetisation. Did these poor have so much money with them who deposited all their riches in the bank for fear of saving their hard earned money? No. One thing that is obvious is many with considerable amount of unaccounted money with them became gracious enough to use the services of their servants, servant maids and the other small staff working under them to exchange their black money for some commission. Now who is going to be punished, the poor who got the commission or the bigwigs who used their working staff?

Should not a thief be more careful? He should learn the lesson from looters, boodlers and black money barons. He has proved himself to be a novice in the art of cheating. He has to undergo apprenticeship under some of those listed above.

Medicos torture, kill monkey at Christian Medical College in Tamil Nadu. News

Some time back, it was medicos who hurled down a dog from the fourth floor, took a video of it and enjoyed. Now it is the turn of the monkey. What I feel is that for the test on efficacy of any medicine , medical researchers used guinea pigs. Our medicos have gone one step further in using dogs and monkeys as their guinea pigs as a matter of training for their future, before treating humans. Patients, beware!
