Kudos to Rajaram for initiating measures to motivate students to attend school. The efforts of good hearts Alumna like Vijay Hegde and others in supporting Teacher Rajaram also needs to be appreciated.

[h=1]Udupi teacher buys bus, turns driver - all to ensure students don’t drop out of school[/h]
Teacher-driver-main-min.jpeg

Students in Baarali began dropping out as they had to trek through 3km of forest area.

For students of Baarali village in Udupi district’s Brahmavar taluk, Rajaram is not just their science and mathematics teacher but also the one person, who ensured that they did not drop out of school.

The students in Baarali and surrounding villages began dropping out of the Baarali Government Higher Primary School over a year ago as the children had to trek through 3-km of forest area to reach the school.

“There are no roads from the houses of the children to the school. There is a mud path through the forest and most of the girl students began dropping out as their families were scared of allowing their children to walk for a total of 6 km to and from school,” Rajaram says.
Saddened by the state of affairs, Rajaram reached out to one of the school’s former students – Vijay Hegde, who runs a property management company in Bengaluru.

“The children were dropping out quickly and with the head count in our school falling low, we were at the threat of shutting down too. One evening, I had finished counting how many children had dropped out and I was upset. Every week at least five to six students were not turning up. I called up one of our former students – Vijay Hegde and proposed the idea of buying a bus to pick up and drop the children,” Rajaram says.

[h=1]Infosys arm offers Rs 200 cr to Bengaluru metro, to be used to extend project[/h]

Sudha_Murthy_Kumaraswamy.jpg

"The Foundation's contribution will be used to build the Konappana Agrahara metro station," Kumaraswamy said

Global software major Infosys' social arm Infosys Foundation offered to give Rs 200 crore to the Bengaluru metro network project, said Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday.

"The Foundation's contribution will be used to build the Konappana Agrahara metro station and metro track of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL)," he said, as per an official release.

Appreciating the Foundation for its initiatives for the betterment of society, the Chief Minister lauded its chairperson Sudha Murthy for inspiring other corporates to follow it in discharging corporate social responsibility.

"The Foundation will maintain the station for 30 years and contributing funds to the people's needs gives pleasure in life," said Sudha Murthy, the wife of Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy.

The metro service, which opened to the public in 2011, currently comprises of two lines in its phase one - green and purple - covering a mere 43 km of the 800 sq km city with ever-expanding suburbs.

A long pending demand...and a promise made during the recent election.. establishment of Karnataka State Brahmins Development Board to attend to the interest of Brahmins ... great indeed!!

[h=1]Karnataka budget: Kumaraswamy keeps promise of Brahmin development board[/h][h=2]“A total grant of Rs 25 crore will be earmarked to religious mutts and institutions dedicated to provide dasoha, education, social services and development on secular basis,’’ Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy said.[/h]
kumaraswamy7591.jpg

The board is intended to function on the lines of similar boards created for backward classes, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and minority communities in the state to address educational, business financing and welfare needs of weaker sections of these communities.

A long-pending demand of the Brahmin community in Karnataka for an agency to look after interests of weaker sections of the community has been answered by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy through the announcement of the constitution of Karnataka State Brahmin Development Board at a cost of Rs 25 crore in the state budget on July 5.

“It is a long-time demand of the Brahmin community to provide assistance for the development of economically backward people in the Brahmin community. Our government proposes to establish Karnataka State Brahmin Development Board for the purpose of development of economically backward people in the Brahmin community and provide Rs 25 crore for this purpose,’’ Kumaraswamy said in his budget speech on Thursday.

The board is intended to function on the lines of similar boards created for backward classes, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and minority communities in the state to address educational, business financing and welfare needs of weaker sections of these communities.

A few months ago, Kumaraswamy, as the state JDS president, had promised members of Brahmin community — making up around 4 per cent of the state’s population — that he would address their demand for a Brahmin development authority if elected to power.

Apart from the Brahmin Development Board, Kumaraswamy on Thursday also said he would be setting up an Arya Vaishya Development Board with a funding of Rs 10 crore. “I did not mention it in the budget speech but we will set up an Arya Vaishya Development Board and will allocate Rs 10 crore for this,’’ the chief minister said.

Former chief minister Siddaramaiah, during his tenure between 2013 and 2018, created several boards to oversee the development of sub-sections of communities in the state.

A Bhovi Development Corporation for the scheduled caste Bhovis, a Babu Jagajivan Ram Madiga Development Corporation for the scheduled caste Madigas, the Karnataka Thanda Development Corporation for the tribal Banjaras, and a Vishwakarma, Uppara and Nijasharana Ambigara Chowdaiah Development Corporations for backward class groups were established during the tenure of Siddaramaiah.

We welcome the initiative of Indian Railways initiative of introducing 'Train 18' with more comforts, pace and unique features.

Train 18: Made-in-India 160 kmph train to run from September

India's much-awaited indigenously manufactured semi high-speed train, code-named Train 18, is expected to be rolled out in September. The train, built by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of Chennai to promote Make in India, is capable of running at a speed of 160 km per hour. The luxury train was earlier scheduled for roll-out in July. When asked about the reason for the delay, ICF Chennai General Manager Sudhanshu Mani said there was no delay but only change in anticipated turnout time.

"There is no delay. The train has been built in record time of 16 months while it takes 2 to 3 years to manufacture such trains anywhere in the world. Earlier, the anticipated turnout time was July. We now expect to roll it out in September," said Mani.
Train 18 doesn't require an engine to run as it will be self-propelled on electric traction like the metro trains. It will replace existing intercity express trains including Shatabdis. ICF will make six such train sets, out of which two will have sleeper coaches.

2012 Delhi gangrape case: Supreme Court upholds death penalty for three convicts; victim's mother says 'got justice'

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the pleas filed by three of the four men convicted in the Delhi gangrape case, seeking a review of the court's verdict upholding their death penalty for the brutal sexual assault on a 23-year-old paramedic student on 16 December, 2012.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan rejected the review petitions filed by Mukesh (29), Pawan Gupta (22) and Vinay Sharma (23), saying the convicts had made no grounds for a review of the May 2017 judgment upholding their capital punishment.

Inefficiencies on the part of State Government that lead to the disaster .. 127 report of CAG says.
Will the Government learn lessons from this...?

Chennai floods in December 2015 man-made, says CAG Report

chennai-flood-bccl.jpg

The CAG report makes particular mention of the operating of the Chembarambakkam tank between December 1, 2015, and the next day.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHENNAI: The massive floods that swept Chennai, Kanchipuram and other districts in December 2015 were due to failure of various state government agencies to heed the recommendations of expert committees on flood mitigation, check dam building and other measures, said a CAG report.

One of the key reservoirs storing water for the Chennai city, the Chembarambakkam reservoir was not operated on full capacity, said the report. "An abrupt and uncontained release of water from Chembarambakkam reservoir contributed to the massive disaster. Imprudent and injudicious action by tank in charge warrants detailed enquiry," the report said.

The CAG report makes particular mention of the operating of the Chembarambakkam tank between December 1, 2015, and the next day. "The discharge of water continuously from 29000 cusec for 21 hours from 01/12/2015 -- 1800 hours to 02/12/2015 -- 1500 hours into the Adyar river coupled with surplus water from upstream are and catchment area caused huge flow of flood water into Adyar river."

[h=1]It is reported that India to revive this dying International Air Port.[/h][h=1]Port Versus Airport: How India Checkmated China In Sri Lanka[/h]
792541cd_36ab_4830_89ae_480e85ec3de0.png

India’s decision to operate the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport(MRIA) is a masterstroke that will checkmate China in Sri Lanka. The island nation announced late last week that Airports Authority of India (AAI) will enter into a joint venture with Sri Lanka’s civil aviation department to operate the $201 billion airport, described as the ‘world’s emptiest airport’ since no commercial airlines operates out of it.

While the final terms are being worked out, it is learnt that AAI will acquire a 70 per cent controlling stake in the airport and operate it for 30 years. Critics sniggering at what they call is a dud deal have overlooked the fact that MRIA is just 15 kilometres north of the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port (the Hambantota port) which Sri Lanka handed over to China in December last year on a 99-year lease. This raised security concerns in India and though Sri Lanka has repeatedly asserted that China will never be allowed to use Hambantota as a naval base, India was not fully convinced.

It is alleged that the Theme Park has come up violating the forest and environmental laws and regulations.

Kerala HC orders demolition of illegal check dam owned by MLA PV Anwar

The issue was highlighted by Kozhikode district collector PV Thomas in a report which mentioned the illegal construction in the park.
The Kerala High Court on Tuesday ordered the demolition of a check dam owned by Nilambur MLA PV Anwar. The dam had been built for his PVR Water Theme Park set up in Cheenkannipalli in Kakkadampoyil in Malappuram, Kerala.

The order follows a host of allegations that the MLA faced regarding the theme park which was reportedly set up without receiving the necessary sanctions and by violating the waste management guidelines.

According to reports, the mini-check dam and boating centre was illegally built and a final NoC or No objection certificate was not granted from the Panchayat office for construction in the site.

The building of the check dam and boating centre began in 2015 by a private company co-owned by the CPI(M) MLA. In the same year, the divisional officer north of Nilambur submitted a report citing the violations in construction, according to a TOI report.

Will the State Governments take serious note of this slap by SC…???

[h=1]Delhi being buried under garbage, Mumbai sinking, but govt does nothing: Supreme Court[/h]
supreme-court.jpg

The apex court has asked the Delhi govt to inform who was responsible for the clearing of the three “mountains of garbage” (landfill sites) at Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur in the national capital. (File)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[h=2]The bench also slapped a fine of Rs two lakh each on "remaining defaulting states/UTs" whose lawyers were also not present in the courtroom during the hearing, without naming these states.[/h]The Supreme Court on Tuesday lashed out at government in several states for not looking into the issue of solid waste management which it believed was one of the causes of the waterlogging crisis in Mumbai following incessant rainfall. The apex court was also anguished over the garbage mess in the national capital. Referring to the recent apex court order on the powers of the Delhi government and Lieutenant Governor, a bench of Justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta asked them to inform it by tomorrow who was responsible for clearing of the three “mountains of garbage” (landfill sites) at Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur in the national capital.

“You see, Delhi is getting buried under mountain loads of garbage and Mumbai is sinking. But yet, the government does not do anything. When the courts intervene, we are attacked for judicial activism. We are given lectures on separation of powers and encroachment of jurisdiction,” the top court said. It also slapped fines on 10 states and two union territories for not filing their affidavits on their policies for solid waste management strategy.

It is reported that one sweeper of BBMP killed himself for he was not paid his due salary for the past six months. There are about 2000 employees who were not paid their salaries. Very sorry state of affair.

Misplaced priorities? No money for civic workers but corporators given iPads by BBMP

BLR_Bengaluru-pourakarmikas_protest-sanitation_750x500_TNM.jpg

Civic workers in Bengaluru have not been paid salaries for the past six months but documents show BBMP spent a whopping Rs 4 crore on iPads for 198 corporators.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) claims to be short of money when it comes to paying civic workers but seems to have funds aplenty to splurge on iPads for all corporators, documents accessed by TNM show.

Civic workers in Bengaluru have not been paid salaries for the past six months and are being pushed into financial crises and documents reveal that in March this year, the BBMP spent a whopping Rs 4 crore and bought iPads for 198 corporators.

The BBMP also spent part of this money to give corporators lessons on how to use the iPad.
When civic workers, who have been staging protests outside BBMP headquarters, demanded that they be paid for their services, officials of the BBMP claimed that the civic body was short on funds.

“They (BBMP officials) spend money on unnecessary things. They could have used that money to return funds for so many pourakarmikas. We are supposed to get Rs 15,000 per month after the provident fund is deducted. But now even after payment has been made, we have got Rs 12,600 per month. In some wards, workers have not received any money yet. The mayor has promised to pay the rest of the money in a couple of days,” says Obalapathi, President of the BBMP Guttige Pourakarmika Sangha.

After Hindustan Motors Ambassador .... now we need to bid good bye to Nano

RIP Tata Nano. End of the road for world’s cheapest car, only one unit made in June

The Nano’s death was confirmed by production numbers: Tata Motors Ltd. produced 1 unit in June, down from 275 in the same month last year. Exports were zero, versus 25 in June 2017.

A moment of silence, please, for the world’s cheapest car, which has all but died in India. It was almost 10 years old.

The Nano’s death was confirmed by production numbers: Tata Motors Ltd. produced 1 unit in June, down from 275 in the same month last year. Exports were zero, versus 25 in June 2017. The company acknowledged that the car in its “present form cannot continue beyond 2019.”

The expiry of the “people’s car,” as Tata Motors branded it in 2008, holds lessons for automakers hoping to make it in India: While consumers may be value-conscious, cutting costs to the bone in pursuit of a gimmicky claim to fame is no use if the end result is a second-rate vehicle with a tendency to catch fire.

India muscles past France in World Bank ranking

India becomes world's sixth largest economy, muscles past France in World Bank ranking
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

India has become the world's sixth-biggest economy, pushing France into seventh place, according to updated World Bank figures for 2017.

India's gross domestic product (GDP) amounted to $2.597 trillion at the end of last year, against $2.582 trillion for France.

India's economy rebounded strongly from July 2017, after several quarters of slowdown blamed on economic policies pursued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

India, with around 1.34 billion inhabitants, is poised to become the world's most populous nation, whereas the French population stands at 67 million.

This means that India's per capita GDP continues to amount to just a fraction of that of France which is still roughly 20 times higher, according to World Bank figures.

Hope the Government will be serious and will take effective measures to protect the idols and prevent further theft of idols in Tamil Nadu.

Madras HC pulls up TN govt over idol thefts from temples, warns of CBI probe

panchaloha.jpg

The court had, in 2017, pulled up the department for not doing its duties of maintaining historical temples and protecting antique idols.

The Madras High Court expressed concern on the rising cases of idol thefts from temples in Tamil Nadu and ordered the state government to take steps to check the menace or else stated that it will ask the CBI to step in and conduct an inquiry.
Reports said that Justice R Mahadevan suggested a new department be put in place if the Hindu Religion and Charitable Endowment department is not equipped to protect the idols.

Hearing a petition filed by Rangarajan Narasimhan, Justice Mahadevan said that he was getting complaints about idol thefts as this case is in progress and that the continuing incidents of thefts show the lack of administrative capabilities in the HR & CE department.

The legendary Neelakurinji Blooms...!!!
[h=1]Once in a blue bloom: Kerala's famed neelakurinji set for rare mass blossom[/h]
The famed neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) will burst into flower - a phenomenon that occurs once in 12 years

neelakurinji_bloom_750.jpg

Starting late July, the Anamalai hills near Munnar in Kerala will be resplendent, clad in a purplish blue carpet. The famed neelakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthiana) will burst into flower - a phenomenon that occurs once in 12 years. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to flock to the Munnar hills to behold the spectacle that lasts up until October.

Munnar is home to the highest concentration of neelakurinji plants in the country - spread over 3,000 hectares of rolling hills. Each shrub reproduces once in its life time and dies after flowering. It takes another 12 years for the seeds to sprout again and grow up to 30 to 60 centimetres high, for another glorious bloom.

The neelakurinji belongs to the genus Strobilanthes, which is a tropical plant species found in Asia and Australia. There are about 450 species of Strobilanthes in the world, of which 146 are found in India and of them, about 43, in Kerala.
The blooming of neelakurunji this year has ensured the fourth most important place for the Western Ghats in the Lonely Planet's 2018 Best in Asia.

According to Prasad Ambattu, a journalist and a resident of Munnar, there are two 12-year cycles simultaneously going on in the Anamalai hills. In one cycle, the last neelakurinji bloom was in 2006 and the next one is now, in 2018. In the other cycle, the last bloom was in 2014.

Karnataka hit by heavy rains..!!

[h=1]Dams in Karnataka reach danger levels as heavy rains lash state[/h]

krishnarajasagar_dam_mysuru_pti_0.jpg

There is fear of flooding and inundation in areas downstream with increased inflow of water into dams.

Karnataka has been hit by heavy rains over the last couple of days, paralysing normal life in various parts of the state.
Among the various districts affected by the rains is Chikkamagaluru, where areas such as Sringeri, Balehonnur, Narasimharajapura, Mudigere, Kudhremukh and Koppa were battered by heavy showers on Wednesday.

A report by Hindustan Times states that out of the 30 districts in Karnataka, 29 of them received rainfall which is above normal level.
Reports state that the various dams along the Tunga, bhadra and Hemavathi rivers have been receiving massive inflow and that the water levels are above the danger mark.

The water levels at Linganamakki dam rose to 1785.90 feet, close to the full reservoir level of 1819 feet. While the levels at Bhadra dam was similarly high at 162.1 feet against its maximum level of 186 feet, the water level at Thunga dam has reached its maximum capacity of 588.24 feet.

Data shows that the inflows into the Cauvery river basin has crossed 1 lakh cusecs for the first time, tweeted weather blogger Chennai Rains. With the rivers in spate, the Harangi, Hemavathi, KrishnaRajaSagara and Kabini dams of the Cauvery river basin recorded inflows of 18,300 cusecs, 28,250 cusecs, 37,000 cusecs and 46,000 cusecs respectively.

T330_13088_Untitled-15.gif

After doing exceptionally well in becoming the most preferred sourcing destinations for services, the growth story of the IT sector is at a tipping point. We must set our priorities as our youth has immense potential

The information technology (IT) sector has successfully positioned itself on the global map of the world for its high quality, low-cost technically sound manpower, and its propitious accomplishment of off-shore models. While in the off-shore model, a large number of companies administered temporary work visas to their technical manpower working at client sites in the US, the UK and other countries, the Indian IT sector has emerged as one of the key industries that has been driving growth.

India soared as the world’s most preferred outsourcing destination for IT services, globally. It accounted for more than half (56 per cent) of the total global outsourcing business. Total revenue in 2017-18 from this sector was $167 billion, contributing more than nine per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The sector also ranked third in India’s total Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) share worth $29.83 billion between April 2000 and December 2017. Most importantly, the IT sector has generated direct jobs for 40 lakh youths in the country. These are the reasons why India’s services sector ranked among the world’s top five economies. This sector was also tagged as the sunrise industry of the country.
