In a first, the temple of Lord Venkateshwara in Tirumala, Chittoor district, will remain closed for six consecutive days from August 11 to 16 for a comprehensive cleaning, the temple’s officials said on Saturday.

As such, pilgrims will not be allowed into the temple complex to view the deity and they will not be allowed to climb the hills on which the temple is located.

A decision to this effect was taken at an emergency meeting of the trust board of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the temple.

Named “Ashta Bandhana Balalaya Maha Samprokshanam,” the unique religious ceremony of cleansing of the entire temple complex including the sanctum sanctorum, takes place once in 12 years.

“This is for the first time in the history of the TTD that the temple will be shut for pilgrims for six days for taking up the temple cleansing. On the previous occasion, when a similar ceremony was held 12 years ago, the temple remained open for restricted hours because there was not so much rush those days. Now, the average daily footfall has crossed one lakh,” TTD spokesman Thalari Ravi said.

An anti-corruption court had sentenced Nawaz Sharif to 10 years on corruption charges and sentenced his daughter Maryam to seven years in prison.

Ousted Pakistani premier Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam were arrested on their arrival in Lahore on Friday night to face lengthy prison sentences in a move aimed at galvanising their beleaguered PML-N party ahead of the July 25 general elections.

After being detained within an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi by personnel from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Pakistan Rangers, Sharif and his daughter were put on a special flight to Islamabad in order to be moved to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

The 68-year-old three-time premier and 44-year-old Maryam, his political heir, were sentenced in absentia for alleged corrupt practices linked to the acquisition of four apartments in London a week ago.

Sharif, who was ousted from the premier’s post by the Supreme Court in July last year for alleged corruption, was in London with Maryam to care for his wife Kulsoom, who is being treated for cancer and is in a coma.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his two-day visit to eastern Uttar Pradesh, by laying the foundation stone of the ambitious Rs 23,000-crore Purvanchal Expressway.

The 353-km long expressway, which will connect several important and historical towns of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau and Ghazipur with Lucknow — the state capital — is expected to be constructed in 36 months, and reduce the travel time between Delhi and Ghazipur.

It will begin from Chand Sarai village on Lucknow-Sultanpur road (NH 731) and end at Haidariya village in Ghazipur district, about 18 km from the UP-Bihar order.

It is 300 crores lying in dormant....!!

No claimants for Rs 300 crore lying in India-linked dormant Swiss bank accounts

It is the third year since Swiss banks made public a list of accounts lying dormant without any trace of owners and no claimant has come forward for those with Indian links, even as a political slugfest continues in India over alleged black money parked there.

swiss-banks.jpg

It has been often alleged that Indians and other nationals seeking to stash their illicit wealth abroad use multiple layers of jurisdictions to shift the money in Swiss banks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The list of all such accounts -- of Swiss citizens and foreigners including from India -- was first published by the Switzerland Banking Ombudsman in December 2015 and it keeps getting updated as and when an account is declared dormant.

This is to allow real owners of the accounts or their legal heirs to stake a claim with necessary proof.

The details get deleted from the list when a successful claim is made and this was the case for as many as 40 accounts and two safe deposit boxes in the year 2017 itself, as per the latest information shared by the Ombudsman.

However, the list of over 3,500 such accounts continues to have at least six with links to India since December 2015, as no successful claimant has come forward for them.

A welcome Initiative of Chennai Corporation towards Singara Chennai in real sense

And hope this can be achieved only through effective enforcement (Unlike Helmet wearing) and with the fullest co-operation of the Chennaiites.

An effective Solid Waste Management is need of the hour for Chennai city.

Wishing the proposal 'All the best'.

Chennai Corporation proposes fines from Rs 100 to Rs 25,000 for littering

Chennai_beach_3.JPG

The Chennai Corporation is inviting suggestions from citizens on its new Solid Waste Management by-law.

On June 14, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) notified the draft for new Solid Waste Management By-Law, 2016, which listed hefty fines for littering. Though citizens in the city were given a 30-day time frame to appeal before the Commissioner of GCC, an official said they are still inviting suggestions from the public.

"Once the Greater Chennai Corporation Council approves the final draft, the new by-laws will come into effect by August," an official told TNM.

The solid waste management bylaws are framed under Section 349 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act, 1919.
According to the new bylaws, the maximum fine proposed by the Chennai Corporation is Rs 25,000, a sharp jump from the current fine of Rs 50. Event organisers, who litter, bury and burn waste and do not segregate, will attract a heavy fine of Rs 25,000.

Incidentally, Chennai has fallen behind other cities in framing and notifying by-laws as mandated under Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.

Under the proposed statutory provision, a fine ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 25,000 will be applicable to violators, including domestic, institutional, commercial and any other non-residential solid waste generators. Individuals found dumping solid waste in stormwater drains, underground sewage systems and waterbodies in Chennai will also be penalised.

The by-laws also stress on the source segregation. It says that residents, institutions and commercial establishments must segregate and store the waste in three separate bins - biodegradable, non-biodegradable and domestic hazardous waste. The segregated waste must be handed over to authorised waste collectors.

Thieves shift transport mode from bikes to autos

Chennai: After police crackdown on motorcycle thefts, petty thieves have shifted their mode of transport to autorickshaws to go on a looting spree lately.

auto.jpeg

Two such incidents were reported in less than a week at different places in the city. In the latest, two men on an auto manipulated a passerby.

“The accused identified themselves as policemen and pretended to pick him up for interrogation related to a case on Usman Road. The pedestrian fell into the trap and got into the auto only to realise later that inmates on the vehicle had tricked him,” the police said.

The victim, after being robbed off his valuables, was abandoned a few meters from the spot.

In another incident, a trio on an autorickshaw chased a couple travelling on another auto and attempted to rob two hand bags kept inside their vehicle. Policemen intercepted the robbers' vehicle and foiled their escape.

[h=1]Let such positive change spread to other shrinking villages too…[/h][h=1]Three youth set out to change Tiruvannamalai village[/h]
Chennai: When the youth population of Irumbedu, a village in Tiruvannamalai, began migrating to the cities and drop out of schools to eke out a living, little did they know that they would end up as cheap labourers addicted to alcoholism and ruin their lives.
While this was happening, Irumbedu, known for agriculture and silk weaving, lost its charm due to lack of support and guidance for development.

Krishnakumar Subramani, an IT employee from Bengaluru, was heartbroken on seeing his native place going to seed.
When he wanted to help it regain the lost magic, he, along with Deepa Rajagopal, who works in the medical sector in the US, and Shreekanth, a techie from Chennai, started working towards reforming the village.

Banning women aged between 10 and 50 from entering the Sabarimala temple in Kerala runs afoul of their constitutional rights, the Supreme Court observed on Wednesday

NEW DELHI:Banning women aged between 10 and 50 from entering the Sabarimala temple in Kerala runs afoul of their constitutional rights, the Supreme Court observed on Wednesday. Hearing a batch of petitions challenging the age-old prohibition on women in the menstruating age group in the famed hill shrine, the apex court said women’s right to worship is a constitutional one and it does not depend on laws.

“On what basis you (temple authorities) deny the entry? ...Once you open it for public, anybody can go. If there is a temple, then it is a public place and everyone is allowed to go there. If men can go there, women can also go,” said CJI Dipak Misra.

Advocate Ravi Prakash Gupta appearing for petitioner Indian Young Lawyers Association argued, “Such discrimination is totally anti-Hindu.” The hearing will continue on Thursday.

Hon'ble C.M. released water for Delta irrigation.

[h=1]Cauvery: CM Palaniswami opens Mettur dam for irrigation[/h]

JULY-19-D-1-e1531985780706-300x223.jpg

Chennai / Salem: In the 84-year history of Mettur dam, Edappadi K Palaniswami became the first Chief Minister of Tamilnadu to open the sluice gates in person to release water for irrigation.

He achieved this feat this morning when he directly visited the dam and opened its gates to let in Cauvery water for samba cultivation.
Speaking after opening the sluice gates, an emotional Palaniswami recollected how late chief minister J Jayalalithaa fought for Tamilnadu's rights over the Cauvery till her last breath.

He said it was the AIADMK that had fought legally to secure Cauvery water for Tamilnadu. He also thanked Varuna Bhagwan for copious rain in the catchment areas that helped fill the Mettur dam.

Palaniswami was accompanied by ministers K A Sengottaiyan, P Thangamani, V Saroja, K P Anbalagan, K C Karupannan and M R Vijayabhaskar.

After a gap of four years, the water level in Mettur dam, the lifeline of farmers in the Cauvery delta districts, to take up irrigation, crossed the 100-ft mark Tuesday night.

120 students of this school secured first class…. Great achievement

School with poor infrastructure… students have to learn paying no mind to heat, rain and cold.

Only 3 rooms in this govt school in K'taka, so these kids have to study under a tree

outdoor_classroom_750.jpg

The 57 students of Class 4 of the government higher primary school in Chigateri study under a tree as they don’t have a classroom.

At this remote village of Chigateri in Harappanahalli of Davanagere district, the class schedule for the government higher primary school students depends highly on the prevailing weather conditions. In the absence of formal classrooms, about 273 students of this school have been braving heat, rain and cold for almost two years now.

While about 163 students have been housed in three classrooms under the Nali Kali scheme, lessons for Class 5 are held at a local kalyana mantapa (choultry). But the condition of the 57 students of Class 4 requires immediate attention, says Santhosh*, a parent, since they don’t even have a roof over their heads and are studying under a tree.

[h=1]Chennai school demands Rs 2 lakh caution deposit, parents protest calling it illegal[/h]
ssm%20school.jpg

Parents took to the roads outside SSM school's Perungalathur and Chrompet branches to protest on Friday

Over 100 parents took to the streets in Chennai outside branches of the Srimathi Sundravalli Memorial (SSM) School in Perungalathur and Chrompet on Friday, after the institute asked them to pay an illegal caution deposit of Rs 2,00,000. They have taken the matter to the CBSE, pointing out that the management has cornered them into either paying the amount or removing their ward from the institution for the next academic year.

The circular was given to the parents of wards in both branches on Thursday. It acknowledged that they have already paid a caution deposit of Rs 20,000 and claimed that the enhanced amount to be paid was Rs.1,80,000. It further reads, “Those parents who are not willing to or cannot pay the enhanced Caution Deposit as stated above can take a final decision before 31.07.2018 and communicate the same through the acknowledgement slip enclosed. Those who commit to leave the school at the end of the year, the TC (Transfer Certificate) will be issued at the end of this academic year. This information is a must for the management to plan for running the school for the next 10 years and also for making the necessary arrangements for the academic year 2019-20.”

Caution deposit is an amount of money that someone has to pay when they rent property, use a service, etc. It is usually returned at when the contract/usage of service ends if there is no damage to goods and services used. In this case however, the school has not mentioned if the amount is refundable.

Mumbai: The RBI's fresh printing of lavender-colored hundred rupee notes may cost as much as Rs 100 crores. This is the approximate amount that CATMI, an association, thinks will cost in calibrating the country's 2.4 lakh machines.

The introduction of the new hundred rupee notes, along with Rs 200 notes may "aggravate pain" for ATM manufacturers said a spokesperson for the association.

The RBI had on Thursady announced that it would soon issue new Rs 100 notes in lavender colour with the 'Rani ki vav' as a motif. 'The Rani Ki Vav' is a historic structure, a stepwell located on the banks of Saraswati river in Gujarat's Patan. "All Rs 100 banknotes issued earlier will also continue to be legal tender," the central bank said.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), a joint venture between the Centre and Maharashtra to build and operate the capital city’s first underground metro corridor has selected French rail manufacturer Alstom to supply the coaches for the line. Five companies had bid for the project including China’s CRRC whose subsidiary CSR Nanjing Puzhen had supplied the coaches for the first line in the city.

Alstom has been selected for the lowest bid and also because of the newer metro norms imposed by the Centre that mandates 75 per cent of coaches be manufactured locally. India currently has three metro coach manufactures – Bombardier, Alstom and state-owned BEML. Alstom has supplied rolling stock manufactured in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh and Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu for the Chennai and Kochi metros.

Watch: This dedicated employee walked 32 km to get to work on time. His CEO gave him a car as a gift

When Walter Carr’s car broke down the night before his first day at work, he realised the only way to make it was to walk

It was around midnight when Walter Carr realised that his car had broken down. He had to make it to his first day at work the next morning at 7 am, and a broken car wasn’t going to be of any help. So Carr did the only thing he could do – he started walking through the suburbs of Birmingham in Alabama at midnight to get to his new job in time.

Carr was planning on walking the entire way from Homewood to Pelham, where he had to report for work for Bellhops, a moving company, at a location 20 miles (38 kilometres) away. The young man would have done the entire journey on foot had a police officer not found him on the way.

According to police sources, two rifles, along with some other weapons, were recovered from Maoists, but the most surprising find was a pen gun. Local media, quoting jawans who were part of the encounter, said the pen gun was recovered from the lady Naxal commander, Jaini, who was among those killed in the encounter.

The small, country-made weapon was made from a nine-inch long metal pipe with nine mm bullets to be used in it.
The pen gun, which resembles a flute, has a range of 15 to 20 metres, according to locals. It is mainly used by the Maoist cadre in emergency situations when they lose their main attack weapons—AK47s and INSAS rifles.

Poongani amma is in the limelight again after award-winning rapper Lady Kash made a song in honour of her

In a small house held by withering walls and fading structures, lives Poongani amma, the oldest living villupaattu performer in the country. She is now in the limelight after Lady Kash, an award-winning rapper from Singapore made a song titled ‘Villupaattu’ in honour of Poongani amma.

Living in the Kottaram village of Kanyakumari district, Poongani amma is an 84 year old villupaattu performer with more than 50 years of experience in the art form. Sitting amidst strewn clothes and long-forgotten utensils, Poongani amma’s fragile figure belies her calm strength and confidence.

Poongani, fondly known as Poongani amma, started practising the art form at the age of 10. During her visit to one of the temple festivals in her village, she saw a pair of twin sisters- Lakshmi and Dhanalakshmi- wield the ‘veesukol’ with such grace and panache that Poongani amma immediately took to the art form. She was only the third woman ever to perform villupaattu after the twin sisters. As a tribute to her legacy, Lady Kash dedicated the song ‘Villupaattu’ to Poongani amma. The video has already clocked more than 5 lakh views.
