The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned more than 51 lakh houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) in three years.

While 7.60 lakh houses have already been completed, another 28 lakh have been grounded. Over 2 lakh beneficiaries have been given subsidy.

In view of the fact that only 12.4 lakh houses were sanctioned under the old housing schemes in over nine years, this is a major achievement, the report said.

The total project cost of the scheme now stands at Rs. 2.81 lakh crore, with Central Assistance estimated at Rs. 77,000 crore.
Under this scheme, which was launched in 2015, the government plans to build 20 million affordable houses by March 2022.

Chennai lads to send 'world's lightest' satellite to spa
ce

26MPteamsatellitejpeg

Four city students build a satellite weighing 33.39 grams, probably the world’s lightest and cheapest

Harikrishnan KG clutches the small box in his hand carefully. He nimbly opens it, revealing a concealed black cube, and props it on the table in front of us.

It is just about double the size of the sugar cubes in the coffee shop we’re sitting in. But this isn’t just any trivial cube. It is a satellite.
What Harikrishnan and his three friends from the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) have achieved over the past few months is remarkable... they have designed a satellite weighing just 33.39 grams, which could probably set a record as the world’s lightest and cheapest satellite. The boys have called it Jai Hind 1-S.

Nearly 140 years after British archaeologist Alexander Rea unearthed a sarcophagus from the hillocks of Pallavaram, an identical artefact dating back by more than 2,000 years has been discovered in the same locality.

The near-intact clay coffin, excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI), in December last year establishes the existence of a megalithic culture in Pallavaram

[h=1]Growing relationship beyond the borders.[/h][h=1][/h][h=1]A restaurant on the India-Pakistan border is building bridges between the nations with food and art[/h]
uqvfvynxwy-1530097239.jpg

[h=2]Close to the Wagah-Attari border, Sarhad features a menu that combines culinary favourites from both countries.[/h]At first glance, Sarhad appears to be just another restaurant on a highway. But the idea behind it is unique – named for the Urdu word for frontier, Sarhad, which is located close to the Wagah-Attari border between India and Pakistan, aims to be more than just a quick stop for travellers. “It is the last commercial space in India,” said Aman Jaspal, the owner. “You can see both flags from the entrance. It exists at the crossroads of both countries.”

The son of a diplomat, and a graduate in economics, Jaspal used to accompany his father on peace-building initiatives to Pakistan, and came to understand what his father saw all along – that a Punjab united was stronger than a divided one.

“My father DB Jaspal was the principal secretary of transport in Punjab, when the state government pioneered the bus service between Amritsar and Lahore,” he said. “The first time I went to Lahore was in 2004 with my father, and I was floored by the culture, and especially the food. And then I began to think about it – we are considered part of a much larger region, a subcontinent including people from different languages and lineages, but why are we so estranged from people that are less than 100 kilometres away?”

Nature's fury: High tides causing damage to the houses, nets, etc

Around 70 houses washed away by wind-generated waves; residents rehabilitated

On Wednesday evening, as each wave crashed on to the shore, Kalpana, a homemaker in Srinivasapuram fishing hamlet, filled bags with sand from the beach. She was trying to save the wall of her house from the onslaught of the waves during high tide.

A length of about 500 m of the Srinivasapuram shoreline is strewn with portions of walls, nets, clothes and other household articles of families that had lived and lost their homes to the waves. Around 70 houses have been washed away by the sea and the residents have been rehabilitated.

The sea has turned rough as monsoon winds are strong. S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said these are wind generated waves. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Bay of Bengal and West Bengal.

Every time, a swell hit the tenements it carries away chunks of sand weakening the foundation and making the houses unstable and unsuitable for living.
CHENNAI: Jayalakshmi, 47, with a grief-stricken face, sits haplessly along with her family on the cracked edge of her crumbling house by the sea at Foreshore Estate. Around 5.30 am on Tuesday, when her family, including four grandchildren were sleeping in the one-room tenement, a swell wave inundated the house. Luckily, no one was hurt, but a sidewall of the house was washed away.

This is not the first time the incident occurred. For the third consecutive years in a row, swell waves during southwest monsoon have wreaked havoc at Foreshore Estate, a prominent fishing locality located south of Marina beach.

While Mumbaikars battled water logging and other annual monsoon woes, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis sanctioned an additional Rs 81 crore to increase the height of the Shivaji Memorial statue by two metres.

At a meeting convened by the CM, the committee set up to overview the Shivaji Memorial Project gave its nod to increase the height of the memorial from 210 metres to 212 metres, reported the Times of India.

"The Spring Temple Buddha in China was earlier proposed to be 208 meters tall, and our memorial was to be 210 meters. But the Chinese authorities made some construction at the statue's base, taking the height to 210 meters. It prompted us to revise our design and increase the height to 212 meters," Chief Minister Fadnavis said, speaking to media after the meeting.

CHENNAI: In significant observations amid bank fraud cases rocking the country, the Madras High Court yesterday said banks were giving loans to several persons "under various political pressures" and those who default on repaying them flee from the country.

Justice S Vaidyanathan made the observation in his order rejecting a petition by an aspiring nursing student seeking a direction to the State Bank of India for sanctioning her an education loan after the bank denied it on the ground that her father was a defaulter.

Noting that whether the amount was small or huge, it needed to be recovered from the defaulters, the judge said in this case the SBI was right in rejecting the petitioner's loan application.

Members of the Muslim community have come together to ‘disown’ one of their kind who is accused of raping a seven-year-old girl in Mandsaur. Mandsaur has been in the news recently for troubles faced by farmers. The Muslim community has now demanded ‘death penalty’ for the rapist, in a bid to repair a seemingly damaged reputation as reported by The Times of India.

In an apparent show of solidarity with the victim, the members of the community refused to allow the body of the accused to be buried in the village, in case he is awarded the death penalty. Terming the accused a ‘monster’ and a ‘blot’ on their community, Waqf Anjuman Islam Committee spokesperson Sadar Mohammed Yunus Sheikh told reporters after leading a delegation to submit a memorandum to Mandsaur SP Manoj Singh, that the accused be hanged.

Police have arrested a porter, Irfan Mev alias Bhaiyyu, for the horrifying crime.

Kerala: 5 Priests Use Woman's Confession to Blackmail, Sexually Abuse Her

stop-rape.jpg

New Delhi, June 26: Five priests of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church in Kerala were sent off on leave after they were accused of sexually abusing and blackmailing a woman over the last few years. The woman’s husband, in his complaint, had alleged that his wife’s confession to one of the accused priests was supposed to be a secret but was rather used to blackmail her.

“A priest had abused her (his wife) before the marriage. Later, when she confessed the pre-marital affair, that priest (who heard the confession) exploited her, threatening that he would reveal everything to me. Again, that priest handed over her to another priest, blackmailing her using the photographs,” her husband was quoted as saying in an audio clip, reported The Indian Express.

[h=1]Chennai Metro Fare Tussle: Madras High Court Dismisses Plea Demanding Fares Be Brought Down To Suburban Rail Fares[/h]

chennaimetro-keaB--621x414@LiveMint.jpg

The Madras High Court yesterday (28 June) dismissed a petition seeking to reduce fares on the Chennai Metro to those on the Chennai Suburban Rail, reports PTI. A division bench comprising of Justices K K Sashidharan and R Subramanian said that the petition had in no way shown that higher fares were an infringement of his fundamental rights.

Merely because, Chennai Metro has been adopting a fare structure, which is high compared to the fare collected by suburban trains or other countries, it cannot be said that a situation has come for the high court to interfere in the matter. In short, it is not the function of the court to decide the correctness of the fare structure evolved by the Metro Rail. We are therefore of the view that the writ petition filed by the petitioner deserves to be dismissed in limine.

The Observation Made By The Bench

The petition, filed by M G R Viswanathan had argued that the Metro charged Rs 70 for a trip from Chennai Central to Chennai International Airport while the same journey on a suburban train – from Chennai Central to Tirusulam – was being charged Rs 5 in Second Class. The petition however did not mention that First Class fares on the Suburban line Rs 80.

A welcome judgement...the public elected Government is supreme.

[h=1]‘L-G can’t act independently, must work with state’: 5 takeaways from SC verdict[/h]

Baijal_Kejri-compressed.jpg

This verdict is being hailed as a major victory for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as the court ruled that power in Delhi lay with the elected government.

The Supreme Court, on Wednesday, said that the Lieutenant Governor (L-G) of the National Capital Territory has no independent decision-making powers under the Constitution of India, except for matters related to land, police and public order, and must act in harmony with the Council of Ministers.

This verdict is being hailed as a major victory for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as the court ruled that power in Delhi lay with the elected government.

Cold war between elected politicians and L.G., Will the judgement put an end to this...??

[h=1]'SC verdict will stop Kiran Bedi's meddling in political decisions' : Pondy CM to TNM[/h]

narayanaswamy_Kirenbedi_750x500_0.jpg

Puducherry CM says that if LG's interference continues, he will file a petition alleging contempt of court.

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy is a happy man this Tuesday afternoon. He joins Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to hail the Supreme Court's observations in regard to the Lieutenant General's role in the decision making process of an elected government in Union territories.

Narayanasamy who has in the past, alleged L-G Kiran Bedi's interference in the functioning of his government multiple times, tells TNM that the Apex court's judgement applies to Puducherry too. He further emphasises that failure to adhere to it could lead to serious consequences.

A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, ruled that the L-G cannot interfere with policy decisions taken by the AAP government in Delhi. The bench ruled that Delhi could not be granted 'full statehood' but that the elected government could make rules on all subjects in the concurrent list, and subjects in the state list, barring three - which are law, police and public order. Justice Dipak Misra further said that the L-G needs to work 'harmoniously' with the council of ministers and act based on their 'aid and advice'.

"I am very convinced about the judgement in question and it will definitely apply to Puducherry too," says the Chief Minister. "The Supreme Court through this verdict, has upheld the democratic principles of the country," he adds.

The political tensions between the Narayanasamy led Congress Government and LG Kiran Bedi have been simmering since her appointment in 2016. The L-G has been asserting that being the administrator of the UT, she had the powers over administrative matters.

amarnath-yatra.jpg

The death toll during this year's yatra reached 11 today as a woman pilgrim died after getting hit by a shooting stone at Brarimarg along the Baltal route.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Amarnath Yatra in south Kashmir Himalayas was suspended today from both Pahalgam and Baltal routes due to landslides even as the death toll during this year's yatra rose to 11 , an official spokesperson said.

"The yatra via both Baltal as well as Pahalgam routes remained suspended because of landslides and shooting stones between Railpathri and Brarimarg and continuous rains in the yatra area," he said.

He said, however, limited helicopter services functioned from both the routes.

"On the 7th day of the ongoing Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 5,919 yatris paid obeisance at the holy cave. Till date, 60,752 yatris had darshan of the Shivling at the holy Cave," the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the death toll during this year's yatra reached 11 today as a woman pilgrim died after getting hit by a shooting stone at Brarimarg along the Baltal route, a police official said.

[h=1]SC expresses ‘shock’ and ‘concern’ over the nature of TMC’s victory of in recent Panchayat polls[/h]
G-_-_bG3

In yet another major setback for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Supreme Court has said that there were huge malpractices in the recent elections in West Bengal. The Supreme Court termed it as utterly shocking.

The bench headed by the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, took the issue of so many uncontested seats into notice and said that a few hundred uncontested seats can be understood, but expressed concerns after looking to the statistics.

The Supreme Court asked the state Election Commission to give the data on all the uncontested posts by tomorrow. The Supreme Court expressed anguish on the issue, “We cannot remain oblivious of this fact that such a huge number of seats were uncontested in the Panchayat elections in the state”. The bench questioned the decisions of the state election body. The commission had first extended the time for filing of nomination papers and later took it back within a day.

The court also feared that the values of the constitution are eroded in the state, as grass root democracy is enshrined in the constitution. “What is bothering us is that out of total 48,650 Panchayat seats, 16,000 posts remained uncontested,” the bench.

The pendulum of victory appears to be swinging in favour of these Banks now.

Victory for Indian banks, UK court orders seizure of Mallya's UK assets

rmpe4Tihifgda.jpg

London: A UK high court judge has issued an enforcement order in favour of a consortium of 13 Indian banks, seeking to recover funds owed to them by beleaguered liquor baron Vijay Mallya who is fighting extradition to India on fraud and money laundering charges worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore.

The order grants permission to the UK High Court Enforcement Officer to enter the 62-year-old tycoon's properties in Hertfordshire, near London.

It permits the officer and his agents entry to Ladywalk and Bramble Lodge in Tewin, Welwyn, where Mallya is currently based. However, it is not an instruction to enter, which means the banks have the option to use the order as one of the means to recover estimated funds of around 1.145 billion pounds.

Back to the roots: This Mangaluru school has made agriculture a compulsory subject

Dakshina%20Kannada%20school%20agriculture%20750.jpg

The school has introduced 'Agriculture Science' as a mandatory subject for students from 5th to 10th standard

Every Saturday, 800 students at Sharada Vidyaniketana School in Talapady in Dakshina Kannada step out of their classrooms and take to the agriculture field, immersing themselves in digging the soil and sowing seeds. This, after the school introduced 'Agriculture Science' as a mandatory subject for students from 5th to 10th standard.

Students between the ages of 10 to 15 are now being familiarised with concepts previously alien to them, such as manure, soil preparation, difference between integrated and mixed farming.

The idea to introduce agriculture as a compulsory subject for students was the brainchild of MB Puranik, President of the Sharada Group of Institutions. An agriculturist by profession who holds an M.Sc in Botany, Puranik was encouraged to introduce agriculture as a subject after an interaction with one of the students at the school. "On being asked where tomatoes come from, a student replied that it came from the market. This made us realise that there is an urgent need to take students back to their roots," says Deepa, part of the faculty for Agriculture Science at the school.

The school has cut out 3.5 acres of land on a trial basis for cultivation and has hired full-time faculty to train the students on the nuances of growing crops.
