News-updates

Today's result in Jayanagar elections is in the expected lines. This has been a BJP stronghold and held by (Late) B N Vijayakumar, a Brahmin candidate, who died suddenly after filing his nomination as a BJP candidate. BJP put his brother for the seat. But he was defeated by a narrow margin of 2889 votes by Congress candidate Mrs Soumya Reddy, first time candidate and daughter of Mr Ramalinga Reddy, former Home Minister. JD(S) wisely withdrew from the elections and supported Congress.

Jayanagar a middle class locality of educated people, always returned BJP. But this time most of the BJP supporters did not vote to show their displeasure against BJP's neglect of middle class.

If the Central Government did not wake up and take corrective action in time, I am afraid results of next elections in 2019 will not be different. BJP may have to face resistance from its own supporters.
People's expectations are high and they do not accept statistics and advertisements in media.

[h=1]No new private schools in Karnataka for 3 years[/h]

Decision comes as no. of students dwindles in govt schools; 2,429 requests for new schools

Express News Service

BENGALURU: In view of the dwindling student strength in government schools, the state government is planning to check the mushrooming of private schools. It may not give permission to set up new private schools in the state for at least the next three years. Over 2,429 applications to set up new schools by private managements are pending before the department of primary and secondary education for the current academic year. And, according to sources in the department, these are unlikely to get the official nod.

“Due to RTE, the number of students in government schools has come down. Under RTE, 25 % seats at private schools are given to students from economically weaker backgrounds. Increasing number of private schools within a 5-km radius of government schools is also a threat,” said a senior official of the department. “The department is therefore thinking of freezing permission for opening of new private schools. A final decision is yet to be taken,” the official added.

If a US government plan to sell six Apache attack helicopters to India goes ahead, the country’s defence capability to counter ground-armoured threats will increase.

Washington has approved the $930 million deal to sell the Indian military six AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, the State Department said on Tuesday (12 June). The agreement, which is awaiting the approval of the US Congress, is expected to go ahead if no US lawmaker objects to the contract.

Boeing and Tata have begun to produce Apache fuselages at a plant in India, but Tuesday’s approval relates to a direct sale of finished products from US manufacturers. The lead contractors are US arms, aviations and engineering giants Lockheed Martin, General Electric and Raytheon.

In addition to aircraft, the contract includes night vision sensors, GPS guidance and hundreds of Hellfire anti-armour and Stinger air-to-air missiles.

Companies such as HEG Ltd., Graphite India Ltd. and Finolex CablesNSE -1.23 % Ltd. have benefited from China’s pollution control measures as well as India’s pledge to electrify even the remotest village, said Gopal Agrawal, portfolio manager at Tata Asset Management Ltd., which oversees $3 billion in equity funds.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on electrification has buoyed demand for cables and wires used in the power sector. India added 100,000 circuit kilometers of interstate transmission capacity in the last four years, according to a June 5 statement from India’s power ministry. Muttom in Cheppad village is no different from the hundreds of other verdant settlements that can be found by the backwaters of Alappuzha. About an hour’s drive from Aleppy town, it is a settlement that falls under the Cheppad Grama Pachayat. However, a recent turn of events that involves a particular enrolment in the state government’s literacy drive has made Muttom the talk of town. Three months ago, 96-year-old Karthyayini Amma was enrolled in the district’s literacy mission programme, making her the oldest student in the whole of Alappuzha, and perhaps even the state.

“It was during one of the surveys done for the state’s drive to achieve 100% literacy that lead to Karthyayini Amma being identified,” said Ullas Kumar, the bespectacled, serious-looking secretary of the Cheppad Grama Panchay

The ministry of Health and Family Welfare seesm to have chosen thoppur in Madurai as the location for the proposed AIIMS

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tamil Nadu: Centre choses Madurai for AIIMS

MADURAI: The ministry of health and family welfare is understood to have chosen Thoppur in Madurai as the location for the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). This was communicated to state revenue minister R B Udayakumar by the chairman of Pradhan Mantri Swathya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), Sanjay Roy, here on Tuesday.

According to the communique, Thoppur has bagged the highest marks among the five places in Tamil Nadu shortlisted for setting up the prestigious institute. The decision is also subject to the realisation of five conditions including four-lane connectivity from the national highway, 20MVA power supply from two different feeders, adequate water supply, handover of land and shifting of transformer. The fifth condition is execution of an agreement with Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, apparently on a pipeline passing through the site.

J&K PLACED UNDER GOVERNOR'S RULE AFTER PRESIDENT'S APPROVAL

T330_223109_Untitled-2.jpg

Jammu and Kashmir was placed under the Governor's Rule on Wednesday following President Ram Nath Kovind's approval.

Governor, N.N. Vohra sought Kovind's approval on Tuesday after the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) decision to pull out of the Peoples Democratic Party (pdp)-led state government which was immediately followed by the resignation of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Vohra's recommendations for imposition of the Governor's Rule was made under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Constitution which allows the state to be placed under the rule for six months.

If an elected government fails to take office within the six-month period, the state can then be placed under the President's rule.

[h=1]How Uttar Pradesh Saved Thousands Of Its Ailing Newborn Babies Through Simple Fixes

[/h]
Remarkable improvement has been reported in the performance of neonatal units in Uttar Pradesh in 2017-18 compared to previous years.
Snapshot

 • Data reveals significant improvement in Uttar Pradesh’s neonatal units last year. Close to 25,000 more babies with medical complications went home healthy in 2017-18 than two years ago.

From filling vacant posts to training grassroots workers, the government made some simple fixes.

If one looks beyond the shrill rhetoric of the Gorakhpur medical hospital case, it seems the last one year has been good for newborn babies in Uttar Pradesh. Data available with the health department show remarkable improvement in the performance of neonatal units in 2017-18 compared to the previous years.

The special care newborn units (SCNUs) usually operate as part of a district level hospital. They are meant to save sick babies upto 28 days, either born within the hospital, nursing homes or at homes. They are crucial because studies have found that the daily risk of mortality in the first month of life is 30 times higher than the second month. In fact, two-thirds of all baby deaths happen during the first four weeks.

Here's what the numbers look like: In 2015-16, a total of 42,474 newborns were admitted to SCNUs, while 31,390 were successfully discharged. In 2016-17, the number of admissions rose to 55,288 but the percentage of babies discharged came down, with the figure closing at 37,832.

In 2017-18, however, the rise in the number of newborns admitted to SCNUs was steep at 85,259 while the percentage of them discharged was stable at about 65 per cent (a total of 55,759 were discharged). Deaths came down from 11.4 per cent to 10.6 per cent in a year.

In simpler words, close to 25,000 more babies with medical complications went home healthy last year than two years ago.

Quantity-driven China beats India in the tech knowhow race

india-china-.jpg

India and China have brought different philosophies while investing in science and technology.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you had compared India and China in the late 1980s, there would not have been much difference in their science and technology capabilities. In the early 1990s, China had started moving ahead, but the two countries were not too far apart in their preparations for the 21st century industries.

But in the 1990s, China invested heavily in education and research and started moving ahead very quickly. It has continued this thrust ever since. Now the two are poles apart in science and technology infrastructure.

China is nipping at the heels of the US, the world leader in science and technology. It has already caught up in quantity, though it is still some way behind in quality.

India and China have brought different philosophies while investing in science and technology. Chinese leaders, many of whom are well-educated in science and engineering, decided that science and innovation should drive the Chinese economy.

Students protesting his transfer out of the school

We do have some efficient teachers who completely involve in their profession.
[h=1]Don’t go, sir!: TN students cling on to their teacher, refuse to accept his transfer[/h]

Teacher_bhagwan_750.jpg

The students created a barrier with their love and affection for Bhagawan as he walked out with his transfer order, one student even hugging him from the back, refusing to let him leave.

A young man in a simple grey shirt and grey pants is surrounded by students – all of them crying, hanging on to him, holding him back. G Bhagawan, the beloved English teacher of the Government High School in Veliagaram, Thiruvallur, was given a transfer order, and the students of the school were heartbroken. They created a barrier with their love and affection for the 28-year-old – one student even hugging him from the back, refusing to let him leave. Touched, Bhagawan, too, was crying as much as his students.

The pictures of this emotional moment were published in the media and by news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai, and the students’ gesture moved even the bureaucracy. G Bhagawan was transferred to the Government High School in Arungulam near Tiruttani – but this deployment has now been put on hold for ten days, after which it will be decided if he should stay in Veliagaram school or go to the new school.

[h=2]Corporation frames bylaws to impose a penalty of up to ₹25,000; stresses on segregation of waste at source[/h]The Chennai Corporation proposes to effect a steep increase in the maximum fine for littering — from ₹50 to ₹25,000 in the city.

The civic body has framed solid waste management bylaws under Section 349 of the Chennai City Municipal Corporation Act of 1919 to collect fines ranging from ₹100 to ₹25,000 for littering.

“Event organisers will pay the maximum fine of ₹25,000 for non-segregation, littering, burying and burning of waste,” said an official. Currently, the civic body is empowered to collect merely ₹50 from violators as per statutory provisions, officials said.

The bylaws apply to domestic, institutional, commercial and any other non-residential solid waste generators, as well as individuals who dump solid waste in stormwater drains, underground sewage systems and waterbodies in the city.

For example, any resident who dumps garbage on the street will have to pay a fine of ₹1,000 to the Chennai Corporation.

For Maharashtra dairy farmers, milk is now cheaper than water

64716446.jpg

File photo Maharashtra farmers pouring milk on the road as a mark of protest.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SANGLI: Across Maharashtra's once prosperous milk belt, many dairy farmers face this stinging reality: the milk they sell is cheaper than water.

Some get Rs 23 per litre of cow's milk, mainly in the milk hub of Kolhapur. But most earn just Rs 17-19. By comparison, bottled water sells at Rs 20 a litre. Once the milk reaches consumers in cities, the price doubles to Rs 40-44. But farmers do not get a share of the mark-up.

As the milk economy curdles, the sight of milk dumped on roads has become emblematic of farmer protests. A year ago they got up to Rs 27 per litre of cow’s milk, but prices plunged by Rs 4-10 eight months ago as a result of a surplus and a crash in international skimmed milk powder prices.

With several dairies announcing cuts in procurement rates by Rs 2 from Thursday and some choosing not to buy cow’s milk at all, the crisis is mounting.

[h=2]“You know the effect it would have. I understand if it was widening of road or something inevitable. Can Delhi afford it today,” the Bench remarks.[/h]The Delhi High Court on Monday banned the cutting down of over 16,500 trees for redevelopment of six south Delhi colonies by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) and the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) till July 4.

A Bench of Justices Vinod Goel and Rekha Palli directed the NBCC not to cut trees till July 4, the next date of hearing and also permitted the petitioner to challenge the orders passed by the department giving permission to cut trees for these residential projects.

“You know the effect it would have. I understand if it was widening of road or something inevitable. Can Delhi afford it today,” the Bench remarked.

The petitioner, an orthopaedic surgeon, has sought the setting aside of the terms of reference and the environment clearances (EC) granted to the project by the Environment Ministry, saying it would lead to the felling of over 16,500 trees.

ED reported to have moved court to declare him a 'Fugitive Offender' and to confiscate his assets worth Rs.12,500/= crore.

I've become poster boy of bank default, will pay up what I owe, says Vijay Mallya in a letter
