A great relief to students ...No special class ...before and after school working hours.

[h=1]Private schools in TN cannot hold special classes after hours for class X, XI and XII[/h]

NEETCLASSROOM3X2_1.jpg

The order comes after parents complained that long hours at school affect students physically and mentally
In a relief to students, the Director of Matriculation Schools has directed private schools in the state to avoid holding special classes before and after school hours for students of Classes X, XI, and XII.

According to a Times of India report, the decision was taken after a parent filed a complaint with the Directorate, stating that the long hours affect students physically and mentally.

The communication states that students can benefit from education only if they are physically and mentally sound, the newspaper reports.

Earlier this month, the Director of Matriculation Schools had also asked private schools to avoid conducting special classes for competitive exams such as NEET during school hours.

Speaking to TOI, R Visalakshi, President of the Tamil Nadu Private Schools Association, said that sufficient breaks were provided and that students were not overburdened, insisting that not conducting special classes would affect students at the end of the year.
“If we are not allowed to conduct special classes, we have to get consent letters from willing parents and conduct special classes for those students alone,” she told TOI.

A ragpicker’s son from Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district has cleared the AIIMS entrance test held in May end.
Asharam Choudhary, 20, a resident of Vijayganj Mandi, a hamlet located nearly 40 km from the district headquarters, has secured 707th all-India rank and 141st rank in the OBC category. He also cleared the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test and secured 2,763rd all-India rank and 803rd rank in OBC category.

The home of Asharam’s parents, Ranjit and Mamta Choudhary, in Vijayganj Mandi speaks for the life the family of four has been living for the past several years.

Battling adversity

The entrance of the shack is made with hay collected from agricultural fields, and its roof is covered with clay tiles and plastic sheets, which barely keep rainwater from trickling in and are forever at risk of getting blown away by strong winds.

Those at the helm of power know that it is important to desilt water bodies before the 'on set' of monsoon.
If this was done seriously, the report says, that we need not have to waste this much of water, the natural resource
Ultimately there will be only drought

Morning Brief:

Imran Khan Likely To Be Pakistan’s Next PM; Dip In Foreign Funds For NGOs Amid Crackdown; Parliament Passes Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill

Good morning, dear reader! Here’s your morning news and views brief for today.

Imran Khan Likely To Be Pakistan’s Next Prime Minister

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In an election marked by large scale rigging by the Pakistan Army, cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan is leading in the early phase of vote counting. With 30 per cent of the total vote counted, Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) party is leading in 113 of 272 National Assembly seats. The party of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is ahead in 66 seats. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), led by Bilawal Bhutto, the son of assassinated two-time prime minister Benazir Bhutto, has taken led in 39 constituencies.
]
Sharif’s PML-N, along with Bhutto’s PPP and other regional outfits, has rejected the result as "blatantly" rigged. The PPP has alleged that the vote-count was being manipulated. There were widespread concerns during the election campaign about manipulation by the army, and it did not disappoint.

Karnataka HC rejects Mangaluru college’s petition to admit only Sunni Muslim students

Karnataka%20High%20Court3x2_0.jpg

The HC observed that allowing a Muslim minority education institute to admit students only from one sect would result in depriving more meritorious students of the opportunity.

Kanachur Islamic Education Trust had approached the Karnataka High Court last week, with a peculiar demand. The Trust wanted state approval to allot MBBS seats under management quota exclusively to candidates from the Sunni Muslim community in the Kanachur School of Medical Sciences in Mangaluru.

However, the Karnataka High Court on Wednesday dismissed the petition. A division bench of Justices AS Bopanna and Mohammad Nawaz said that allowing a Muslim minority education institute to admit students from only one sect would result in depriving more meritorious students of the opportunity.

“If this is allowed in other religious and linguistic minority institutions by resorting to smaller groups in the minority quota in every such institution, the entire process of admission would be affected,” the bench said.

The court also pointed out that the Trust’s deed itself says that it was set up to run educational institutes for the advantage for the entire
Muslim community, which is also reflected in the certificate issued to the Kanachur’s medical school in September 2015 by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institution. While the undertaking carries an agreement stating that at least 66% seats will be filled by minority community students, there was no bias towards the Sunni sect in the documentation.

Let change in name, move this State towards progress and development, etc.

West Bengal Assembly Passes Resolution To Change State’s Name To ‘Bangla’

In what is being seen as a bid to go up the alphabetical order, the West Bengal assembly has passed a resolution to change the state’s name to ‘Bangla’ according to a report in Economic Times.

The development comes two years after the assembly had passed a resolution to change its name which was rejected by the Centre as the proposal had three names for the state in three different languages. In August 2016, the assembly had proposed changing the state’s name from West Bengal to Bengal in English, Bangla in Bengali and Bangal in Hindi.

How Tamil Nadu is gearing up to bid plastic adieu

13THPLASTICS

Come January 2019 and Tamil Nadu will begin its journey to going plastic-free. The government proposes to ban plastic carrybags, plates, cups, flags and sachets used for packaging water, among other items. Exceptions will be made for disposable plastic used for packaging milk, curd, oil and medical items. With the ban less than six months away, various sectors in the State have begun to come up with solutions. A look at some of the initiatives, by no means exhaustive, that are afoot in the State

In Kancheepuram, the district administration has decided to step in long before January. It has declared that anyone who dispenses one-time use-and-throw plastic products in the district will attract penal action from August 16. It will also actively encourage people and business communities to use bio-degradable products as an alternative to use-and-throw products, through awareness-building measures.

The Salem Corporation has gone a step ahead, enforcing a ban on single-use plastic from August 1 in three bus termini in the city. It has also reportedly directed Central and State government officials, government hospitals and urban primary health centres, and educational institutions functioning in city limits not to use plastic bags and other unnecessary plastic articles from July 1.
According to R. Sadheesh, Corporation Commissioner, the civic body has already conducted a demonstration of bags made of tapioca starch, which disintegrate on their own within 90 days.

How are they going to separate the millions of tonnes of waste...?

[h=1]BBMP plans to install waste-to-energy plant in Mavallipura landfill, but will it work?[/h]

landfill_rep_image.JPG

The BBMP has signed a memorandum of understanding with a French company to set up the plant an 8 MW waste-to-energy plant at the cost of Rs 200 crore

From driverless pod-taxis to pig-catching tenders, Bengaluru’s civic body – the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) – is known for its somewhat bizarre schemes. Now, the Palike has come up with another questionable idea: A waste-to-energy plant in the Mavallipura landfill.

The BBMP has signed a memorandum of understanding with a French company to set up the plant an 8 MW waste-to-energy plant at the cost of Rs 200 crore, which is said to generate energy from 1,000 tonnes of waste generated per day. The tender is expected to be floated in August. The Palike is planning to seek a subsidy of 35% from the state government, 25% from the Centre and the remaining money will come from the Mayor Fund.

Although, this sounds like a good plan on paper, experts say that the pattern of waste production in Bengaluru is one of the main reasons why such a waste-to-energy plant would fail terribly.

Speaking to TNM, Ramakanth, the Chairman of the BBMP Solid Waste Management Expert Committee, says that the committee was not even consulted before the plan was proposed and tenders were called for. No public consultation was carried out either, he alleges.
Ramakanth believes that in a city like Bengaluru, where the wet waste amounts to 60% of the total garbage produced, the waste-to-energy plant is bound to fail.

“Most of the waste produced in Bengaluru is wet waste. If the plant is going to be in Mavallipura, then the waste being pushed into the plant is mixed waste. So, most of the energy generated by the plant will go into removing the moisture from the wet waste and this is neither feasible nor profitable,” Ramakanth says.

Walmart plans to create 30,000 jobs in UP

photo.jpg

Walmart recently acquired 77 per cent stake in Flipkart. In future, it is highly likely that it will leverage Flipkart to give wider visibility of such artisan/weaver clusters.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tagging Uttar Pradesh as a priority growth state, Walmart India said it expects to create at least 30,000 local jobs by setting up 15 stores in the state. Walmart India, which already runs four Cash and Carry stores in UP, recently launched a fulfilment centre (FC) in Lucknow, which created 1,500 new skilled jobs.

In the UP Investment Summit held earlier this year, Walmart India had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the state government to open 15 wholesale Cash and Carry stores.

"Each store is likely to create 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, thereby generating at least 30,000 local jobs in the state," Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Rajneesh Kumar who represented Walmart India in the Investment Summit, told from Mumbai.

Nirmala Sitharaman hands over 'Made in India' engines to Army

Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today, at a function, formally handed over two types of indigenously built high-power multi-fuel engines to the to Vice Chief of Army Staff Devaraj Anbu.

The engines manufactured by the Engine Factory in Avadi (Chennai), a unit of Ordnance Factory Board, Department of Defense Production, were fully-indigenized for the first time under the Center's "Make in India" program.

Here's more.

Here are some specifications of the two engines

Though these engines were manufactured based on Russia's design, India was depending on Moscow for its supply of critical assemblies like the turbocharger, supercharger, fuel injection pumps.

The Engine Factory under "Make in India" manufactured the two engines with 100% local parts.
Earlier localization level was about 73%.

The indigenization efforts by the Engine Factory would save Rs. 80cr of the exchequer every year.

Engine Factory manufactured over 12,000 engines since '87

It also exhibits the self-reliance of the Ordnance Factory Board in manufacturing these engines in India without any import support, the officials said. The Engine Factory has manufactured more than 12,000 engines since its inception in 1987.

[h=1]1,000 'war rockets' of Tipu Sultan unearthed from Karnataka fort[/h]

Tipu_Sultan_750_wikimedia.jpg

The rockets will be kept for public display at the department's museum in Shivamogga city in the Malnad region.

Over 1,000 "war rockets" of the 18th century ruler of the erstwhile Mysore state, Tipu Sultan, were found in an abandoned open well at Bidanooru Fort in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, said an official on Saturday.

"Excavation of the open well in the fort at Nagara near Shivamogga led to unearthing of over 1,000 corroded rockets that were stored during Tipu's time for use in wars," state Archaeology Department Assistant Director R. Shejeshwara Nayaka told IANS from the site, 385km northwest of here.

A chance discovery of 160 unused rusted rockets in the vicinity in 2002 and their identification after five year's of research in 2007 into the Tipu era made the department explore if more such ammunition was lying buried in the fort.

"Digging of the dry well where its mud was smelling like gun powder led to the discovery of the rockets and shells in a pile, each filled with potassium nitrate, charcoal, and magnesium powder used to fire or lob them using an artillery," Nayaka noted.

The portion of imported parts used in home-built weapons has come down to 40 per cent from 48 per cent four years ago, Business Standardhas reported.

“Last year, the total production by defence PSUs (public sector undertakings) and OFB (Ordnance Factory Board) was about Rs 590 billion, of which Rs 138 billion was the value of imported components. That is roughly 24 per cent. But when we look at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), out of Rs 172 billion of production, Rs 70 billion was imported components -- nearly 40 per cent,” the daily quoted Secretary for Defence Production Ajay Kumar as saying.

“This 40 per cent today was 48 per cent in 2014-15. So we have been able to progressively reduce it,” Kumar said at a conference on Friday.

According to Air Marshal RKS Shera, the IAF’s maintenance chief, at least 50,000 imported parts have been indigenised. At least 3,000 parts are indigenised every year, he said, adding that another 80,000 components can be built in India.

[h=1]Meet the Indian priest-scientist who recently discovered that Milky Way had a ‘sibling’ galaxy[/h][h=2]In an interview with Scroll.in, Richard D’Souza explains the significance of the findings he and Eric Bell made at the University of Michigan.[/h]

A recent intergalactic discovery making headlines across the world has an Indian connection. Earlier this week, it was widely reported that scientists Richard D’Souza and Eric Bell of the University of Michigan had deduced that the Milky Way once had a sibling, which was devoured by the neighbouring galaxy of Andromeda about two billion years ago.

The findings were published in the Nature Astronomy journal on July 23 and have grabbed attention for their potential to change our understanding of how galaxies merge and evolve over time.

'Kodaikanal Still Won't' and the Role of the Privileged in Activism

41579078.jpg

We the privileged have created a social order that makes us indispensable even to make sure that questions from the lesser privileged are addressed. So we must remain messengers and convey the message effectively rather than draw undue attention to ourselves.

To South Indians, Kodaikanal is a summer haven. A hill station that allows us to escape the suffocating heat of April/May and rejoice in its sub-20 degree celsius temperatures. For several decades, it was the exclusive privilege of the rich and famous, but things have changed radically. Today, it is brimming with tourists belonging to the entire spectrum of the society.

For the former workers at the Unilever’s mercury factory, though Kodaikanal is their home, became a site of hardship, sickness, struggle and even of death. The plant was forced to shut down in 2001, but it took sustained pressure for 15 years, the steady rise of public awareness and then the rap song titled ‘Kodaikanal Won’t’ that went viral to make Unilever act. It has, at long last, compensated its employees for mercury poisoning.

But the ugliness did not stop there. Unilever has now refused to clean up the soil as per international standards. In collusion with the multinational company are the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board authorities, who have set lower standards. They have even approved Unilever’s failed remedial tests. To make people aware of this continued injustice and demand what is right from Unilever, arose a new song: ‘Kodaikanal Still Won’t’.

The song was written by almost everyone involved in the project through collective brainstorming, the music set by Amrit Rao and rendered by Sofia Ashraf, Amrit Rao and myself. The video for the song was filmed in and around Kodaikanal over a two day schedule. The focus for most of the shoot was the three of us, with other artistic elements such as short dance sequences being included to make the video effective. The last element that we filmed was a protest march, which the song video itself ends with.

As compared to Integral Coach Factory (ICF) design coaches, the LHB design coaches are lighter in weight.

To better the safety standards in rail travel, Indian Railways has decided to use Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) design coaches and stop production of the old ICF design coaches.

Linke Hofmann Busch design coaches in Indian Railways: To better the safety standards in rail travel, Indian Railways has decided to use Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) design coaches and stop production of the old ICF design coaches. As compared to Integral Coach Factory (ICF) design coaches, the LHB design coaches are lighter in weight. Not only that, they also have higher carrying capacity as well as higher speed potential. Also, other than these features, the LHB design coaches have increased codal life and better safety features, says Indian Railways. LHB coaches also have anti-climbing features, so that in case of a collision, the coaches do not climb on top of each other.

Recently, Rajen Gohain, Minister of State of Railways in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha stated that considering the operating conditions on Indian Railways, the passenger coaches of the national transporter have been designed with the necessary safety features. However, the Railway Ministry informed that in order to provide safer and more comfortable journey to passengers, the Indian Railways has decided to replace conventional ICF design coaches of Mail or Express trains with LHB design coaches in a phased manner. Also, it was decided that from April 2018 onwards, only LHB coaches would be manufactured by production units of the national transporter.
