Indian woman fights off croc with spoon

August 02, 2015

A HOUSEWIFE in eastern India has fought off a crocodile attack using cooking utensils.

SABITRI Samal, 37, was washing dishes in a creek near her home in Orissa state's Kendrapara district on Thursday when the giant reptile lunged at her.

"The crocodile caught hold of her right leg but she staved off the ferocious attack," senior forest official PK Pattnaik said by phone from Kendrapara. "She claimed that she hit the reptile on its forehead and eyes with an aluminium bowl and a wooden spoon and it released her after a struggle," he added. Samal's cries for help alerted people nearby who rushed to the scene and took her to hospital. There have been a spate of crocodile attacks in the villages situated around Bhitarkanika park, officials said. Two villagers have lost their lives in such attacks in recent months.

Sania Mirza recommended for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna

Sania Mirza recommended for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna

Aug 1, 2015,

NEW DELHI: The Sports Ministry on Friday confirmed that Wimbledon doubles champion Sania Mirza has been recommended for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna but made it clear that the final decision rests with only the Awards Committee.

Sania won her career's first ever women's doubles Grand Slam title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis in July. She also became world number one before winning the Grass Court major.

Sports Secretary Ajit Sharan said the Sports Minister Sarbanada Sonowal has indeed recommended to the tennis exponent for the highest honour given for achievement in sports.

"We had got a late recommendation from AITA but the Minister accepted that and recommended the same to the Awards Committee," Sharan told said.

"But the final decision to give the honour rests with the Awards Committee," he clarified.

Sania, who has won three mixed doubles Grand Slams in her career, is reportedly competing with Squash player Deepika Pallikal and discus thrower Vikas Gowda for the prestigious award.

Student’s heart saves Maharashtra woman in Chennai hospital

Student’s heart saves Maharashtra woman in Chennai hospital

August 3, 2015

A heart harvested from a young brain-dead student and flown in from Hyderabad saved the life of a woman from Maharashtra at a hospital in Chennai on Saturday.

The heart, which arrived in the city on a chartered flight at 9.19 a.m. reached Fortis Malar Hospital in Adyar in just 13 minutes, thanks to a green corridor created on the route.

Cardiomyopathy

According to K.R. Balakrishnan, director, cardiac sciences, Fortis Malar Hospital, the woman, who is in her fifties, was admitted around three weeks ago with cardiomyopathy – a condition, where the heart muscle is abnormal, making it harder for the heart to pump and deliver blood to the rest of the body.

On Thursday evening, an alert came in from Hyderabad about a 20-year-old student who was declared brain dead.
Doctors at Fortis Malar immediately sought a chartered aircraft to fly them into Hyderabad.

Finally, a flight came in from Kochi, but by the time it arrived at the Chennai airport, it was nearly 2 a.m.
A team of four doctors, two nurses and a transplant coordinator flew out around 3 a.m., Dr. Balakrishnan said.

In 26 minutes

Once the heart was harvested, it was rushed back to the airport.
Thanks to the city police in Hyderabad, a green corridor was provided and the donor heart was transported to Shamshabad airport from Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad in just 26 minutes.

“We were cutting it a little close. A heart is only viable for about four hours, and by the time we reached our hospital it had been about three hours and forty minutes. But we managed to transplant it, and the surgery was successful,” said Dr. Balakrishnan.
He said arrangements in Hyderabad were excellent. “It was very smooth and very efficient even at the crowded airport. The administration there did everything possible to make this happen," he said.

Volleyball player

Twenty-year-old Abhijit, the donor was an accomplished volleyball player and an engineering student from Hyderabad.
A resident of West Marredpally, Abhijith, along with his friends, was travelling in a car on the city outskirts at Kompally on the night of Thursday, July 30.

The youngster received grievous injuries in the car accident. The liver, corneas and kidneys were distributed to hospitals in Hyderabad.
The organ arrived in time thanks to the green corridor provided in Hyderabad

At 3, Anjana is Kerala’s youngest ‘life-giver’

03th_Anjana_1_jpg_2495754e.jpg

Her life was short and sweet and she was gone even before Ajith or Divya could say goodbye to the apple of their eye.

Losing one’s three-year-old is not something most parents ever recover from. But even in that heart-wrenching moment, when they were told that their daughter would never come back to life, Ajith, an employee of the VSSC and his wife, had no second thoughts about donating their child’s organs.

Declared brain-dead

When three-year-old Anjana was declared brain-dead at the paediatric ICU of Sree Avittam Thirunal Hospital on Saturday and her parents let know their willingness for organ donation, they did not immediately know that they would be saving another young life. Or that Anjana would be the youngest organ donor in Kerala till date.

Anjana’s organs — liver as well as both her kidneys — went to save the life of a five-year-old, Anil Raj, who has been ailing with both kidney and liver failure at KIMS Hospital here and who needed an immediate transplant. Both corneas were also retrieved by the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology.

This is the first time that Kerala Network for Organ Sharing, the nodal agency in charge of the State’s deceased donor organ donation Programme, Mrithasanjeevani, was dealing with an organ donation, wherein both the donor and the recipient were so young.
Also, this was the first time that three organs from a single donor was being transplanted in a single recipient.

Anjana was the younger of Ajith and Divya’s two children. She was rushed to SAT Hospital on Thursday, after she suddenly fell unconscious while playing.

A brain scan revealed that she was suffering from advanced Medulloblastoma, a common malignant brain tumour in children. Doctors said there was very little they could do to save her. Her parents were told about her condition on Friday itself and KNOS was informed when the parents wondered if they could donate her organs.

“A child’s organs are best suited for another child. We decided to donate all three organs to one child because it would have been difficult for him (Anil Raj) to survive with organs from different people,” Aneesh, transplant coordinator, KNOS, said.

Hospital sources said Anil Raj was waiting to receive liver and a kidney from his father, when the route of cadaver donation suddenly fell open.

A team from KIMS hospital and a surgical team from SAT Hospital completed the organ retrieval by 8.45 a.m. Anjana’s body was handed over to her parents and the funeral was held in the afternoon.

Chandigarh: A former hockey player-turned-Punjab Police officer Jugraj Singh played an active role in the day-long operation against three terrorists in Gurdaspur district's Dinanagar town on Monday.

32-year-old Jugraj Singh was among those Punjab police personnel who gunned down the heavily-armed terrorists.

A former international hockey player who was once India's penalty corner specialist, Jugraj Singh is a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) with Punjab Police and posted in Amritsar district.

As police force from Gurdaspur's neighbouring districts were summoned to take part in the anti-terrorist operation who had launched a pre-dawn attack in the Dinanagar which borders Pakistan, DSP Singh along with other personnel reached the town to flush out the terrorists who had stormed a police station.

"As soon as the message was flashed about the incident (Gurdaspur attack), we along with other team members rushed to the site to neutralise the terrorists," he said today.

"We reached Dinanagar at about 8:15 am in the morning and took our positions."

The former hockey player, who had survived a car accident on the outskirts of Jalandhar nearly 12 years ago, said he fired several rounds from his firearm at the terrorists who were holed up in the police station complex.

All the three terrorists were killed in the gunbattle with security forces including the state's SWAT team that stretched for over 12 hours.

Smarter than Einstein, Hawking? 12-yr-old scores 162 in IQ test

Smarter than Einstein, Hawking? 12-yr-old scores 162 in IQ test

A 12-year-old British girl is brainier than Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking if her IQ test is anything to go by. Nicole Barr scored a perfect 162 on her Mensa IQ test, two points higher than the two legendary scientists.

The score puts Barr in the top 1% of the brightest people on the planet and implies she is more intelligent than physicists Hawking, Einstein and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who are all thought to have an IQ of 160.

“She’s a hard working child. She stays after school for homework club and never misses a day,” said her 34-year-old mother Dolly Buckland.

“From a young age she’s been picking out mistakes in books and magazines. She’s a happy, fun-loving girl who is always asking for extra homework,” Buckland told British tabloid the Daily Mirror.

“When I found out I got such a high score, it was so unexpected. I was shocked,” said Barr, who received her IQ test results last week.

“Nicole’s IQ puts her comfortably within the top 1% of the population,” said Mensa spokesman Ann Clarkson.

The girl, who is a Year 7 student in Burnt Mill Academy, enjoys reading, singing and drama. At primary school, Barr was several years ahead of her peers and could tackle complex algebra before the age of 10.

Drop Dead NGO who Fixes Leaking pipes free of Cost

Drop Dead NGO who Fixes Leaking pipes free of Cost

Aabid Surti is an odd character. A few years ago, the angular, bearded author was invited to meet the President of India to receive a national award for literature at a ceremony in the capital, New Delhi. He politely declined. Absorbed in writing the first draft of his new novel, he cited the reason that he did not have time. But what he has made time for every Sunday for seven years now, is going door-to-door in Mira Road, a non-descript suburb of Mumbai, with a plumber in tow, asking residents if they need their tap fixed for free!

As a distinguished Indian painter and author, Aabid has written around 80 books but no story so moved him as the truth about water scarcity on the planet. “I read an interview of the former UN chief Boutros Boutros Ghali,” he recalls, “who said that by 2025 more than 40 countries are expected to experience water crisis. I remembered my childhood in a ghetto fighting for each bucket of water. I knew that shortage of water is the end of civilized life.”

Around the same time, in 2007, he was sitting in a friend’s house and noticed a leaky tap. It bothered him. When he pointed it out, his friend, like others, dismissed it casually: it was too expensive and inconvenient to call a plumber for such a minor job – even plumbers resisted coming to only replace old gaskets.

A few days later, he came across a statistic in the newspaper: a tap that drips once every second wastes a thousand litres of water in a month. That triggered an idea. He would take a plumber from door to door and fix taps for free – one apartment complex every weekend.

As a creative artist, he had earned more goodwill than money and the first challenge was funding. “But,” he says, “if you have a noble thought, nature takes care of it.” Within a few days, he got a message that he was unexpectedly being awarded Rs.1,00,000 ($2,000) by the Hindi Sahitya Sansthan (UP) for his contribution to Hindi literature. And one Sunday morning in 2007, the International Year of Water, he set out with a plumber to fix the problem for his neighbors.

He began by simply replacing old O-ring rubber gaskets with new ones, buying new fixtures from the wholesale market. He named his one-man NGO ‘Drop Dead’ and created a tagline: save every drop… or drop dead.

Every Sunday, the Drop Dead team – which consisted of Aabid himself, Riyaaz the plumber and a female volunteer Tejal – picked the apartment blocks, got permission from the housing societies, and got to work. A day before, Tejal would hand out pamphlets explaining their mission and paste posters in elevators and apartment lobbies spreading awareness on the looming water crisis. And by Sunday afternoon, they would ensure the buildings were drip-dry.

By the end of the first year, they had visited 1533 homes and fixed around 400 taps. Slowly, the news began to spread.

In March 2008, director Shekhar Kapur, who was working on his own water conservation film, heard about Aabid’s efforts and wrote on his website: ‘Aabid Surti, thank you so much for who you are. I wish there were more people like you in this world. Keep in touch with us and keep inspiring us. Shekhar.’

Local newspapers began to write about Drop Dead, which prompted a further flood of grateful emails and spontaneous messages. One of the most heartfelt messages was from superstar actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan, a longtime fan of Aabid’s work as a comic book creator. After reading the newspaper report titled ‘City of Angels’, he wrote to Aabid: “…It sounds like one of the little big things my dad would have done. Strange that I have enjoyed [your comic] Bahadur in my childhood and enjoyed reading your tap story so many years down the line… when I am father myself. God bless you and yes, I believe in angels after reading the newspaper.

In 2010, Aabid Surti was nominated for the CNN-IBN CJ ‘Be The Change’ Award. In the same year, a television crew from Berlin flew down to follow him on his Sunday rounds which continued come monsoon or shine.

It’s hard to say how much water he has saved with his mission, given that the faucets he fixed could have continued leaking for months, and maybe years, had he not rung the doorbell one Sunday morning. But conservatively, it could be estimated that he has single-handedly saved at least 5.5m litres of water till date.

In the summer of 2013, the state where Aabid lives is expecting its worst drought in 40 years. Months in advance, the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chauhan has warned citizens to begin conserving water. While ministers lobby for drought-relief packages worth millions of dollars, Aabid sees his own approach as simple and inexpensive.

As he rings another door-bell on yet another Sunday in Mira Road, seven years into his one-man mission, he says: “Anyone can launch a water conservation project in his or her area. That’s the beauty of this concept. It doesn’t require much funding or even an office. And most importantly, it puts the power back in our own hands.” I would call him a modern-day angel; I am lucky I get to call him dad. * UPDATE (MAY 2013): Much has changed for dad since this post. He was given the Sparrow Award for conservation and funding to continue his work. He also received funding from the Rotary Association and a few other organizations, and offers to spread the news further. This blog post itself went viral and got dad featured on DailyGood as one of the Everyday Heroes. Global Voices Online further translated this post into Italian, French, Spanish, Malagasy & Greek!

In April 2013, he was once again invited to meet the President of India, for his Drop Dead project. This time he went.

Pakistan Sikh girl among toppers of Class X exam

Pakistan Sikh girl among toppers of Class X exam

02 Aug 2015,

Lahore: A 15-year-old Sikh girl in Pakistan has emerged as the first girl from the minority community to be among the toppers of the Class 10 examination.

Manbir Kaur from Nankana Sahib district of Punjab province has secured more than 1,000 marks in Secondary School Examination (SCE) this year, securing 1,035 marks out of 1,100.

She is not far behind from Shafaq Zahid, topper of the Punjab board of examination who secured 1,080 marks, and Aleena Mohsin who scored 1,079. The result was announced last week.

“She is the first Sikh girl who has got such a good marks in matriculation examination this year. And this very encouraging for her community,” Punjab Assembly member advocate Mary Gill said.

Gill, who belongs to ruling PML-N, told PTI today that the Punjab government will offer Manbir a scholarship at any institution for higher studies.

“Manbir is welcomed to take admission at any government institution in the province. The Punjab government has allocated Rs 20 million scholarship fund for the minority students in the province,” she said, adding an overall Rs 1 billion has been allocated for the development of the minority in Punjab.

Lauding the performance of Manbir, Gill said: “Pakistani Sikh girl students are performing better than (Sikh) boys who often are not interested in studies as they have to contribute to the family livelihood,” she said.

Manbir’s father Giani Prem Singh is the head granthi at Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib, some 80 kilometres from here. Their house is not away from Gurdwara Janamasthan, the birth place of Baba Guru Nanak.

“The whole family is delighted over her brilliant performance. Manbir used to study 12 hours a day and her hard work paid off,” he said, adding the Sikh community in the district is proud of his daughter.

More than 200 Sikh families are living in Nankana Sahib. Manbir is mulling to join a private college in Lahore. By virtue of her good marks, she is entitled to a scholarship for both the government and private institutions. Manbir has applied for a pre-medical course (FSc) as she wants to become a doctor.

Citing her own example, Gill said: “No one can stop you from achieving your goal provided one works hard. And minority members are no exceptions.”

She said there might be hurdles for minority students but they must work hard to overcome them.

American Girl Started a Movement with Used Bars of Soap

American Girl Started a Movement with Used Bars of Soap

August 3, 2015

A girl from the US packed her bags and came to India. When she met kids who were 13 years old and didn’t know what soap was, she had the ingenious idea of recycling soaps, distributing them in slums for better health and hygiene, and empowering women. Here’s more about Sundara soaps and it’s founder Erin Zaikis.

A few years ago, Erin Zaikis saw Slumdog Millionaire, a highly acclaimed movie that portrayed the lives of people in Mumbai slums. Her life hasn’t been the same since then, because she just packed her bags and came down to this country.

“I couldn’t believe that people were living like this. I booked my ticket and came to Mumbai and started working with an orphanage here. I had always lived a very superficial life where materialistic things mattered a lot. But when I came to India, my life was changed. I got a new sense of purpose,”

After working for a short period at the Mumbai orphanage, Erin went back to the US but her heart was still in India. On graduating from the University of Michigan, she went to rural Thailand. There she met children who had never used soap and didn’t even know how to wash their hands.

When she found out that about 70 million people in India too faced the same issue, she found a reason to return and work in the country that had changed her life.

Erin came back to India in 2014 and started Sundara, an organization that employs several underprivileged women from the slums of Mumbai to recycle soap collected from 15 hotels nearby.

But it wasn’t an easy task. Especially for Erin who has never worked independently on a project like this before.

“I constantly asked people for help and advice. I would ask them to connect me to a few hotels in Mumbai. It took so much time. And after I did connect with some hotels, convincing them to give us their discarded soaps was also a challenge. Earlier, I did not understand why anyone would be sceptical about giving us their waste. But later I learnt that they were scared of getting into any legal trouble in case someone fell sick,” she says.

After a lot of convincing, Erin got a few hotels to partner with her for her initiative. An existing NGO called Gabriel, that provides meals to slum kids, helped introduce Erin to the slum people so she could gain their trust easily.

Gabriel’s team helped her explain her idea to the community. She got in touch with the women of local self-help groups who agreed to help her with the manufacturing of recycled soaps.

Once Erin finally had all the right partners, she just needed to learn how to make new soap bars out of discarded ones and the process couldn’t be simpler. It takes just seven minutes to make one batch of soap bars.

A manually operated, small scale soap recycling machine is used to make new soap bars out of the old ones. Finally, bars are packaged and distributed, along with providing hygiene education. -

Sundara reaches out to over 6,000 children and adults in Mumbai slums. The soap is distributed to a network of over 30 schools and community centers and each regular soap delivery is accompanied by Sundara’s representatives who instruct people on hand washing and other healthy habits.

Sundara has not only inculcated better hygiene awareness among the slum residents but also given an alternate source of income to the women who live there.

One Man's Donated Blood Has Saved More Than Two Million Lives

One Man's Donated Blood Has Saved More Than Two Million Lives

150522112617-spc-vital-signs-miracle-blood-b-00005614-horizontal-gallery.jpg

Even though 78-year-old James Harrison hates the sight of blood and has a self-professed low pain tolerance, he has been donating blood nearly every week since he was legally old enough. He was inspired to do so after someone else's donated blood saved his life during a chest operation when he was 14.

While all blood donors have the potential to make a difference in someone's life, Harrison is special. The plasma from his blood has the ability to cure a deadly disease.

In Australia, where Harrison lives, rhesus disease—a condition in which a pregnant woman's blood begins attacking her unborn baby's blood cells—was claiming the lives of thousands of babies a year before 1967. If a pregnant woman has rhesus-negative blood and the baby in her womb has rhesus-positive blood, inherited from its father, the mother's body may react by producing antibodies that actively seek out and destroy the baby's "foreign" blood cells, resulting in brain damage or death.

Shortly after his first donation when he was 18, doctors called Harrison with a big announcement: He might be the solution to this mysterious disease, as his plasma contained a rare rhesus antibody. Over the course of the 1960s, Harrison worked with doctors to develop an injection called Anti-D, which prevents expectant mothers from developing the harmful antibodies. Ever since then, Anti-D has been used to successfully ward off rhesus disease throughout Australia.

"Every bag of blood is precious, but James' blood is particularly extraordinary," says Jemma Falkenmire, of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. "His blood is actually used to make a life-saving medication, given to moms whose blood is at risk of attacking their unborn babies. Every batch of Anti-D that has ever been made in Australia has come from James' blood. And more than 17% of women in Australia are at risk, so James has helped save a lot of lives."

Over 2,000,000, according to estimates by the Australian Red Cross blood service.

Since the discovery, Harrison has donated plasma more than 1,000 times. But his opportunities are dwindling. In Australia, people must retire from plasma donation at the age of 81, which is just three years away for Harrison.

"I guess for us the hope is there will be people who will donate, who will also ... have this antibody and become life savers in the same way he has, and all we can do is hope there will be people out there generous enough to do it, and selflessly in the way he's done," says Falkenmire.

President Pranab Mukherjee presented Ashok Chakra to family members of two army personnel, who laid down their lives combating militants in Kashmir.

Major Mukund Varadarajan and Naik Neeraj Kumar laid down their lives while battling groups of militants in separate operations in Shopian and Kupwara districts of Kashmir respectively, Udhampur-based defence spokesman Colonel S D Goswami told PTI.

"Major Mukund Varadarajan, Company Commander, received information about the presence of three terrorists in village of Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on April 25, 2014.

This group had targeted polling officials just a day prior.

Major Mukund acted swiftly by deploying troops in an effective cordon and simultaneously evacuated civilians from the target house," the spokesman said.

"This aggressive action forced the terrorists to shift their position to an outhouse in the compound. Major Mukund along with his buddy Sepoy Vikram displaying raw courage, crawled in proximity to the outhouse.

"The officer lobbed a grenade inside the cement outhouse killing one terrorist instantaneously. Another terrorist present in the outhouse opened a burst of auto fire thereby seriously injuring Major Mukund," he said.

The spokesman said although bleeding profusely, the officer crawled ahead unmindful of his grave injury, fired and neutralised the second terrorist.

For Indian Girl Stuck in Pakistan Salman Khan's Gesture

For Indian Girl Stuck in Pakistan Salman Khan's Gesture

August 04, 2015

New Delhi: The story of Geeta, an Indian stuck in Pakistan after accidentally crossing over as a child, has inspired actor Salman Khan to channel "Bajrangi Bhaijaan," his character in the eponymous film that has made waves on both sides of the border.

geeta-bajrangi-bhaijaan_650x400_71438593502.jpg

"Salman Khan offers to help Geeta. Asks director Kabir Khan to find out how he can help Geeta meet her family," activist and former Pakistan minister Ansar Burney tweeted last night.

Geeta, who is hearing and speech-impaired, was nine when she crossed into Pakistani territory. Personnel of the Punjab Rangers took her to a social welfare organisation, the Edhi Foundation, in Lahore. She soon moved to a home in Karachi.

Geeta can recognise the Indian map but she has not been able to give much more to go on. Officials at her shelter believe she tries to say that her father is from Jharkhand and mother from Telangana. She has also conveyed that she has 11 siblings, including four sisters.

For Geeta, a separate prayer room has been set up at the shelter home with posters of Hindu deities like Ganesha. She has written in her journal: "Maa Baap Bahut Yaad Aate Hain (I really miss my parents)."

Ansar Burney took up Geeta's cause three years ago during a visit to India.

Her story drew fresh attention after the success of the Salman Khan-starrer based on a speech-impaired girl from Pakistan. The actor plays the character Bajrangi Bhaijaan, who takes on the mission of reuniting the girl with her family in Pakistan.

Bengaluru Cops Stepped In To Support Their Orphaned Kids

Bengaluru Cops Stepped In To Support Their Orphaned Kids

Aug 5, 2015,

Their father had been murdered and their mother was arrested as an accused in the case. Hunger, homelessness and, worse, an abrupt end to their bright academic careers seemed a certainty for the two kids. Instead, the 17-year-old girl is today attending a private college in Mysuru to pursue Std XI, while her 13-year-old brother goes to a private school in the same city. Just when it looked like there was no escape from the approaching tsunami, a bunch of miracle-workers in khaki appeared on the scene and turned the tide of their lives.

In an overwhelmingly magnanimous gesture, the Rajagopalnagar police not only made an all-out effort to ensure the kids didn't end up on the streets, but they have also taken it upon themselves to provide for the siblings' education.

However, the team had no inkling that a murder case would bring out their most humane and compassionate sides. On May 22, the Rajagopalnagar police found 40-year old Vijay Kumar lying dead in a pool of blood. Their investigations pointed to his wife, 35-year old Malleshwari, as the prime suspect. However, Malleshwari had escaped, taking along a four-year-old daughter.

She had left behind the two older kids, Bhavana and Navneet.

"We brought them and started talking to them. They said they were not going to school as they did not have money. We had already started looking for their mother, but when these two children opened up, we couldn't help but be moved," says Mahanand, police inspector of Rajgopal Nagar police station.

"Their father was dead, their mother was absconding. But the kids couldn't be made to pay a price. Bhavana had scored 71% in Class X and Navneet was brilliant student, studying in Class VIII. Both feared they would have to drop out as they were suddenly left adrift. This set us thinking and we decided we had to help," says Mahanand.

As a first step, the kids were sent to the state home. Mahanand personally spoke to Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members asking them to help as the cops couldn't directly approach schools for admissions since it was a murder case.

CWC officials swung into action and took the initiative to secure admissions for the siblings, while the police also spoke to education department officials. Finally, Bhavana got a seat in a private college, and Navneet joined a private school in Mysuru. Both stay in a government-run state home there.

After the siblings had been anchored into their new lives, police tracked down Malleshwari in July.

She broke down and confessed she had killed her husband as she couldn't endure the battery and violence anymore, especially since he targeted the children.

Malleswari who is accused of murder

Emotions ran high at the police station when Malleswari expressed her desire to speak to her children. The cops connected the kids in Mysuru with their mother over the phone. A policeman says several eyes in the station became moist when Malleswari and the youngest sibling spoke with the other two.

"Malleshwari is in jail. But we regularly call up the kids and will make sure we help them in every way," the police official added.

Not really a random act of kindness, is it?

One act of kindness seemed too good to be true. But a repeat act by the saviours of Bhavana and Navneet puts them firmly in the category of heroes. A28-year old mother had gone missing leaving behind her two kids, aged eight and 10 years old.

Rajgopal Nagar police started investigating the case after a missing complaint was filed. They managed to trace the mother and were happy they would be uniting the mom with the kids. But, in an unexpected twist, the woman refused to accept kids as she had got married to another person.

Once again, the story tugged at their heartstrings. They knew what had to be done. They dug into their pockets again, pooled in funds and admitted the kids into a good English medium school. They have purchased books, shoes and every single thing the kids would need. But that's not enough for the good Samaritans. They pay regular visits to the kids' home to ensure all is well.

Inspector H K Mahanand says Sujatha, who was staying Rajgopalnagar, left her husband a year ago. After that, in the middle of the academic year, she walked out on the rest of her family, including her mother, sister and two young kids. The family is very poor and the kids had to stop going to the government school.

"After Sujatha went missing, her sister came along with the two kids to file a missing complaint. Our team started searching for Sujatha and found her in a village near Mysuru last month," says Inspector Mahanand.

He says they tried to convince her to come back to Bengaluru for the sake of her kids. But, she refused saying she had married another man and was also pregnant with his child. "Left with no choice, we came back. But Sujatha's family would regularly turn up at the station saying they couldn't care for the kids nor could they afford to send them to school anymore."

Mahanand admits it was a tricky situation. When the kids told him they were desperate to study, he knew he couldn't sit back and watch. He immediately went to Kiran English School in RajagopalNagar. "I met a management official and requested two seats for Classes III and IV and told them not to take a single rupee from them."

The team was keen to help out too. "We purchased every single thing the kids would need from books, shoes, bags etc. Both the kids regularly go to school. The teachers say they are very sharp kids who study well. We are also monitoring them and our policemen go to their house once in a week to ask about the children," Mahanand added.

DCP delighted at police initiative

"I am really happy to see our police helping the poor and needy. They are doing their policing in a superb manner and also doing a great job helping the kids of the accused who want to study further. Recently, they helped four such students," said DCP North T R Suresh

The 26-year-old suffered severe burns to 64 per cent of her body in 2011, fought back from a two-month coma and rehabilitated from more than 100 operations.

But her journey to recovery continues as she's determined to overcome yet another obstacle - getting back on her surfboard and ride 'some of the world's most perfect and uncrowded waves'.

Sydney award-winning filmmaker Mark Brightwell, known for co-creating hit surf film Raw The Movie, will be documenting Turia's return to surfing.

The pair are trying to raise $60,000 for the film through crowd-funding.

'Phoenix is about overcoming adversity and never giving up and finding that piece of inner strength that we all have inside of us,' Turia said on Pozible.

The burns survivor hopes to return to Tahiti, which is where she was born.

'I really think that's where my love for ocean began,' Turia said.

'I've always had such a strong connection with the water and that was something that I definitely lost during the 2011 Kimberley ultramarathon.

'Three years on, my fight back continues.'

Turia, who was a part-time model and 2007 contestant in Miss Earth Australia, received skin grafts on her back, legs and face.

'I guess this movie is not just about surfing, it's about getting back into the water, reclaiming my fitness and shooting in some of the world's best surfing locations,' Turia said.

Brightwell, who will be directing the film, told Daily Mail Australia he was captivated by Turia's determination, passion and her never-give-up attitude.

'Phoenix is a bird that is burnt to ashes and rises again and that's obviously symbolic to Turia's story,' he said.

'I've always wanted to create a film that would make a difference in people's lives and Phoenix the documentary is that opportunity.

'While I want to capture Turia's return to surfing, which has been a big part of her upbringing, through this film we also want to give people who've suffered tragedy hope and show them there is light at the end of the tunnel.'

Among Turia's many talents she is a mining engineer, the author of 'Everything to live for' and a motivational speaker.

She also one of the winners of the NSW Premier's 2014 Women of the Year Awards.

Phoenix is set to be released in 2015.

Girl, 5, saves family from crash by hiking barefoot for help

A heroic 5-year-old Canada girl saved her family's life after a horrific car crash by crawling out of the wreckage and climbing barefoot up a steep embankment to flag down help.

Little Lexi Shymanski managed to get herself out of her car seat and pull herself from the smashed SUV after her mother fell asleep at the wheel and veered down a 40-foot ridge, the family said.

"It's crazy," her mother Angela Shymanski told Metro. "I only can remember one or two times where she got out of her five-point harness previously. She somehow got out, adrenaline or whatever, and barefoot hiked up the embankment."

The quick-thinking tot may be the reason her mother and then-10-week-old baby brother Peter are still breathing after the June 8 wreck outside the mountainous town of Jasper in western Alberta, Canada.

She unclipped the harness on her car seat, which was lodged against the seat in front of her, opened the damaged car's passenger door and made her way up the rugged terrain without any shoes, Metro reported.

Then the brave girl flagged down a passing car and told the driver what happened.

The motorist rescued baby Peter and went back to the road to ask another driver, who ended up being a paramedic, for help with the children's unconscious mother.

"It's amazing and we're just so glad she did that," Angela Shymanski said.

The family started a GoFundMe page, raising more than $19,000 after the crash rendered the mom-of-two confined to a wheelchair.

Angela Shymanski, who worked as a swim teacher, broke her back in two places, underwent surgery to repair internal bleeding and had some organs removed, she said.

Peter needed neurosurgery to reduce brain swelling, but little Lexi made it out with only scratches.
The three were airlifted to a hospital, where they stayed for 19 days.

They're now recovering, but the little hero appears "blissfully unaware" of her lifesaving actions, Metro reported.

"She just doesn't know what it means," her mother said. "She's just 5 years old and so happy to be home and playing with her dog and her ducks."

pistories1.jpg
