Fearing For Their Lives, Kashmiri Students Are On The Run In North India

In the three days that have passed since one of the deadliest attacks against Indian security forces in decades, Kashmiris living in different parts of India have been intimidated, threatened and attacked by locals and right-wing activists.

While authorities have failed to put an end to the threats and intimidation, students have either locked themselves in their hostel rooms or fled their college campuses.

Some, like the BSc student in Ambala, want to head to Kashmir, but they don’t know how to make their way back.

There are reports of some making it as far as Jammu, where they are stuck either due to the weather or the curfew imposed by the state government. They cannot find transport to get to Kashmir by road. Some are staying with friends, while others have hunkered down in makeshift shelters in cities like Chandigarh and Jammu.

The student also said there was no space left to express a “different” opinion on the Kashmir conflict and Kashmiri students were “sick” of the backlash against them.

“We are from a conflict area. No one understands death better than us. We know how it feels to lose a father, a brother, a son. We can never celebrate death,” he said.

I am sorry for these Kashmiris. They too are Indians.

A large number of citizens in different cities also offered to open their homes and hearts to Kashmiris in distress and those who felt insecure and were looking for shelter.

Meanwhile, former J & K CM and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah tweeted that Kashmir was not just a piece of land and pointed out that by attacking Kashmiris, they were being told there was no place for them outside the Valley and no future in the mainland.
“Young Kashmiri students studying outside J&K should have been feted as examples of people who have stayed away from the politics and conflict in Kashmir, choosing instead to make a future for themselves. By attacking them, terrorising them & forcing them to find shelter they are being told there is no place for them outside the valley & no future in the mainland (sic),” Abdullah, former Chief Minister of the state, said in a series of tweets.

Those hotheads that make up the mobs doing this damage need to ask themselves (if they have the mental bandwidth) whose purpose is served by ostracising Kashmiris.

“Targeted violence against Kashmiris in various parts of the country only helps the perpetrators of terror and division. Kashmiris have rendered innumerable sacrifices fighting terrorism and violence. Reach out -- make them feel safe and protected,” Mayor of Srinagar, Junaid Azim Mattu said in Twitter post.

The Home Ministry has also issued an advisory to all states/UTs to take necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of Kashmiri students following reports of students and other residents of Jammu and Kashmir experiencing threats and intimidation.

Instead of Directing your revenge against Indians from J&K, direct it against Pakistan and its agents.
If you go after Indians from the state of J&K you are Pakistani Loyalist, not Indian.
These educated Indians from J&K will be the future of J&K and India.
