Daughter of eight-time MP who sells mangoes on streets

June 17, 2015

Meet Chandravati Saru, daughter of former deputy Lok Sabha speaker Kariya Munda. Saru, who is a teacher by profession, can be seen selling mangoes on the streets of Khunti, a town located 40 kms south of Jharkhand capital Ranchi.

Saru says she is not ashamed selling mangoes on the streets despite being the daughter of a veteran political leader. By doing so she wants to send a message to youngsters who are reluctant and feel ashamed in taking up agriculture as a profession.

Saru told India Today TV that she will donate the money she gets from selling mangoes to people who need it more that her. My father always tells me not to get detached from my roots. Keeping myself grounded is what I have inherited from my father, says Saru.

For many modern political leaders, Kariya Munda's lifestyle is an example of simplicity and minimalism. Munda, 77, lives in a mud hut at Anigara, a tribal village in Khunti. Ploughing the field, clearing weeds and shrubs form Munda's daily routine when he is not attending Parliament.

Despite living in a district which is considered a Naxalite hot-bed there are no security guards at Munda's village home.
