Why our ancestors used copper utensils?

This is the modern explanation for same.
Even Gangajal, a sacred water is stored in copper vessel and it remains for years forever, this is nice one.Chemical Secrets of Copper water: Immunity, Fertility - Dr.Shirish BhateImmunity:

Copper can destroy undesirable virus & bacteria. It is interesting that the Ayurveda new this, when bacteria were unknown to science! Ayurveda recommends storing water in Copper Vessels.

Ancient Egyptians used Copper Vessels to keep water fresh.Even today, management of Siva temple at Rameswaram uses large sized Copper vessels to store water brought from river Ganges to offer to lord Siva.

Water, stored thus, stays fresh for years together.

According to scientists, copper vessel can be the answer to kill the `E-Coli' bacteria which causes food poisoning. British scientists are carrying out research on copper and concluded that copper ions kill these harmful bacteria, a capability not found in any other metals including gold.

It is interesting to see that a research group from Southampton University found that Coli 157 bacteria can live happily in stainless steel vessels for months together, while copper vessel at room temperature can kill them in just four hours.

At 20 degree Centigrade, in the stainless steel vessel, those bacteria live for 34 days, while in brass vessel they live only for 4 days.
Thus if one uses copper vessels for storing water in factories, shops, hospitals, restaurants, we can get rid of the risk of these food poisoning bacteria.

Though stainless steel is much used for its shine and cleanliness, the copper is more useful material for vessels.

Copper and Fertility:

The advantages of drinking copper water was pointed out by Andrew Saul, Contributing Editor for the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, while speaking on fertility, conception & family planning. In his own words -"If you want to conceive, try having the man take mega doses of vitamin C for a few weeks prior. At least 6,000 milligrams a day, and as much as 20,000 mg/day guarantees very high sperm production.

Divide the dose throughout the day for maximum effect. And that effect is what, exactly? More sperm, stronger sperm, and better swimming sperm all occurred, at even lower daily C doses, in a University of Texas.

Continued high doses of Zinc can produce a Copper deficiency & sometimes a Copper deficiency anemia. This is very easy to compensate for. To begin with, most Americans have copper water pipes in their homes. Drink a glass or two of cold water first out of the tap every morning and you'll get copper. Secondly, eat more raisins and other Copper-high foods.

Third, take a multiple vitamin (as you should be doing anyway) with Copper in it.

Finally, do what those sexpots in India have been doing for thousands of years. Buy a Copper metal cup, fill it with cold water at bedtime, and drink it first thing the next morning!!!

It is also seen that Copper water becomes "sharp" and gets readily absorbed by our body, reaches cells in about 45 minutes. Hence, it is generally recommended that after Ushapan (Drinking water in morning), one should give a gap of 45 minutes before taking tea or coffee. Copper water is also recommended to people suffering from vitiligo, where it helps formation of melanin.

After starting on copper water, many do not need cold water to satisfy the thirst.

With yoga, pranayama and other breathing techniques, senses become so sharp that taste and quality of water can be sensed adequately.

Though copper water is slightly ionic, it does not cause gastric acidity to increase. On the other hand, due to increased Agni and digestion, acidity reduces...

Has it ever occurred to anyone that out ancestors were human and used the existing knowledge, It may have been the best at that time.
Did our ancestors know of Stainless Steel? Did our ancestors know of lead poisoning? Did our ancestors know of cell phone, computers or movies? If our ancestors were god why did they die?

I am sick and tired of these stupid posts repeated thousands times.
If our ancestors were so smart why did they die, why there knowledge was overtaken by modern marvels?

Why not look at all these prolific posts as mere "Tamasha" just as one will look at the joker in a circus?

I am NOT tired of reading such news items. Anyway, can anyone tell me how to judge purity of copper vessels sold outside many temples.

Sorry important word 'NOT' left in the earler post. This is edited one.

The first post in this thread is just a copy pasting done by Sri PJji. So I leave him out.

The rest of the members who have gone hammer and tong on the simple news presented in the first post are revealing a certain mindset which is just nauseating. These are the real jokers around who keep themselves busy coming here with all the muck in their mind and pouring it out. Real jokers of a surrealist kind. LOL.

The following Video gives lot of info in Cooking in Pots v/s other vessels and what sort of metals / materials are suitable for cooking ( here mudpots , brass and copper are considered safe ) and what metals / materials are harmful for cooking ( most of modern cooking utensils especially non stick ware are considered harmful ) . I leave it to the individual to evalaute how best to follow the advice given here :

Dear Vaagmi Sir

There is an old saying

'Don't argue with Idiots' so, i follow this dictum when faced with stupid posts in reply to my OP

Also there are members who are not worthy of replying, you know very well who are they !!

if a members says as the ancient people did not win over death and died, so they are not wise, it is the bottom line of stupidity they exhibit.

Stainless steel vessels with Copper bottom is preferred by many households nowadays

This You tube cartoon was posted by me some time back when faced with the same members with their stupid posts in reply to my thread, this cartoon still holds good!!

Caution!!

''Copper vessels are commonly used for storing food and water. Drinking water from a copper cup is said to purify the blood and

remove toxins from the body. Storing water in a copper vessel, however, can prove to be harmful if the vessel is not washed

regularly. "Before using a copper cup or glass, one must make sure that it is scrubbed and rinsed well to ensure that no deposits

remain," says Dr Aggarwal. The water or food from unwashed copper vessels can cause stomach ailments.''

P.S: A special powder is available in the market to clean copper and brass vessels to sparking shiny ones!! :thumb:

Thanks for the Additional info about Copper vessels use Raji Madam

Some wooden heads may not appreciate such info.

Copper vessels which were extensively used, say, even about 50 or 60 years ago mainly for storing or handling water alone were knowingly discarded for many reasons. The most important is I think that even water in a copper vessel usually reacts with the copper surface and a deposit of Copper sulphate and other chemicals develop inside the vessel. In a pot with a small mouth, it was next to impossible to remove this deposit by rubbing. (Incidentally, even the special powder is good only for external surfaces.) This deposit used to give many kinds of stomach ailments starting from diarrhea and even Ayurvedic doctors advised the use of bronze or brass vessels with tin coating, back in those days. Therefore copper pots or kuDams were used only to bring water from river or well but that water was used only for non-food/non-drink uses like washing, bathing, latrine etc., uses.

So, just as some of our ancestors were supposedly very wise to use copper vessels once they knew how to extract copper from nature, another set of our recent ancestors who were possibly "wooden heads" (and this will include people of two or three generations from the present, including possibly those of the OP!) decided to discard copper vessels completely in favour of tap water and bronze/tin coated brass vessels. Then aluminium became abundantly available at cheap prices and so even the poorer people changed over from bronze/brass to aluminium vessels. Plastic and its different varieties then replaced aluminium to some extent. Now there is widespread talk of aluminium and plastics being great health hazards, plastics being carcinogenic, but this has not percolated to the BPL sector even now. Hence you will find in slums and other poorer households aluminium (which has become costly) and plastic vessels and pots extensively used.

The non-poor sections use stainless steel extensively and the upper echelons have a number of other, costly alternatives. Hence, I feel there was/is nothing to yell about our ancestors using coppper for storing water at some point in the past; people before them would have used iron, clay etc., products in the remoter past. Anyway, there can be no two opinions in our assiduously following our so-called wise ancestors in storing ganga jal (which itself is highly poisonous nowadays!) and giving a few drops to a dying person because any way there is no problem of that person returning to life with stomach trouble caused by salmonella, e-colii etc!

Another crab posted by the member admitting that he is wooden headed!!

Water is one of the ways that copper may enter our bodies. The EPA has established an "action level" for copper in drinking water. This action level is exceeded if the level of copper in more than 10 percent of the tap water samples collected by a water system is greater than 1,300 micrograms per liter (or 1,300 parts per billion). You may wish to check with your water supplier for the results of the copper testing it did. Steps should be taken to reduce exposure if this level of 1,300 parts per billion is exceeded.
This level has been set to protect against acute toxic effects in humans. However, it is not protective against copper toxicity in sensitive members of the population, such as those with Wilson’s disease, who will have to further limit their intake of copper from all sources.

In addition, hot water dissolves copper more quickly than cold water; as a result, water to be used for drinking or cooking should not be drawn from the hot water tap. If you need hot water for cooking or drinking, take water from the cold tap and heat it. It is especially important not to use the hot water for making baby formula.

Copper pots are popular due to their even heating. But large amounts of copper from unlined cookware can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Some copper and brass pans are coated with another metal to prevent food from coming into contact with copper. Over time, these coatings can break down and allow copper to dissolve in food. Older copper cookware may have tin or nickel coatings and should not be used for cooking.

Stainless steel cookware is low in cost and can be used at high heat. It has a sturdy cookware surface that does not wear down easily. Most stainless steel cookware has copper or aluminum bottoms for even heating. Health problems from stainless steel are rare.

Even though copper cookware has been manufactured, sold, and used by countless people for many years, it is potentially dangerous. The problem lies with the type of coating on the cookware, or lack thereof. Ingesting copper in small amounts is generally not harmful, but large amounts all at once or in a short period of time can be dangerous, according to Health Canada. Before using copper cookware to prepare food, make sure it is safe to use.

[h=2]Dissolved Coating[/h]
  • Acidic food, such as tomatoes, cooked or stored in copper cookware over a long period of time can cause the copper coating to be released into the food. Instead of cooking acidic foods in your copper cookware, use some other type of cookware. Never store acidic foods in copper cookware. The amount of copper exposure that proves toxic to humans is unknown, according to Health Canada.
[h=2]Scratched Coating[/h]
  • Improper cleaning techniques can scratch the coating on copper cookware. It is important not to use any type of abrasive cleaners, scouring sponges, or tools to clean copper pots and pans. If your copper pots or pans have scratched linings, either discard them or use them for decoration.
[h=2]Inappropriate Coating[/h]
  • Older copper cookware may be coated with tin or nickel, which is unsafe for food use. If you have older cookware and you are unsure of the coating, don't use it for cooking. Instead, display it as a decorative item. Some copper cookware is lined with stainless steel, which is safe for food use.

Copper is a very good conductor of heat and is shiny in appearance. Because of these properties it was the preferred material for kitchen utensils. But its use is now confined to just outer layer of kitchen pots that are used in cooking. Copper toxicity is reduced to zero by using stainless steal lining on the inner side of the vessel.

[h=2]Disadvantages of using Copper Vessels[/h] But is it safe to cook every kind of food in these vessels? No, as copper reacts with certain food because it is slightly acidic in nature and may lead to health related issues and even cause poisoning of food. Therefore copper vessels should never be used to store or cook pickles or acidic food.
Also milk and milk products such as curd, butter, ice creams react very quickly with copper so never store these in such vessels. Never keep honey, citrus juices, citrus fruits in copper vessels.
Such food after reacting with copper leads to many problems related to digestive system such as gastrointestinal infection. One may feel nauseous or experience a stomach ache after this. Also some patients complaint of acidic and metallic feeling on the tongue, dizziness and feeling of frequent thirst. Having excess of copper may lead to short or long term health issues and you may need a doctor to overcome these.

Drinking copper rich water may have its advantage but be careful. Its higher level can cause gastrointestinal distress, and if one is having high amount of copper for a long time then it may lead to kidney or liver damage. So it is advisable to consult your doctor before drinking or having copper rich food.

I will have to agree with you to a great extent..I feel ancestors or cavemen for that matter just used the resources they had at that time and its not as if everything detail of their lifestyle was analysed ..no one needs to know rocket science for survival.

At every stage of life and civilization its just a glorified beggars can't be choosers moment!

We all progress by trial and error and then decide to adhere to lifestyle best known to us.

The whole ancestors were more intelligent and the present generation is not is just to make the past stand out becos as we age we tend to identify with the past more cos subconsciously we know the present is running out.

All humans from whichever era.. past or present..were/are born..grew up/grow up..grew/grow old and died/die.

No one was extra special and no one is extra special and no one will be extra special.

I feel some write ups should just state for example "Benefits of using copper utensils"..there is no need to go on and on about ancestors cos some practice of ancestors were also harmful.

For example long long ago cow dung was smeared on the navel of a new born and that lead to neo-natal death becos sometimes cow dung contained tetanus spores and that lead to tetanus in new borns which was 100% fatal.

Now spirit swab is used to clean the navel of newborns and we do not see cases of tetanus in newborn.

So there is not necessarily wisdom in any ancient practice and also some modern practices too might be unsafe when new study or research is done.

So the best is just read everything as information and not compare and contrast ancestors and present day humans.

If we ask any oldie female why she used copper utensils way back in 1940's...she would just tell you cos that was what she had...she wont tell you more than that.

Its just like if we ask an ancestor male why he wore a Kaupeenam..he would say cos that was the trend back then!

MY OP is based on a findings of a Scientist about Why our ancestors used Copper Vessels and not about their Wisdom. Also it gives the benefits of using copper vessels as stated by you.

That's all.

Ayurveda: Benefits Of Drinking Water From Copper Vessel

Ayurveda: Benefits Of Drinking Water From Copper Vessel

( This is based on an article from India Times)

April 30, 2014

Scientifically speaking, when water is stored in a copper vessel for over eight hours, very small quantities of copper get dissolved in this water. This process is called “oligodynamic effect” and has the ability to destroy a wide range of harmful microbes, molds, fungi etc. due to the toxic effect it has on living cells.

This positively charge water is extremely good for health. Even though sometimes it may taste a bit odd, it is worth noting that this water never becomes stale and can be stored for a long time.

Water stored in copper vessels has a number of health benefits; here are some of the most widely recognised ones:

  • Stimulates the brain
  • Helps digestion
  • Boosts bone strength
  • Regulates the functioning of the thyroid gland
  • Combats arthritis and joint pains
  • Boosts skin health
  • Regulates body fat
  • Improves fertility
  • Slows down ageing
  • Helps heal wounds
  • Improves cardiovascular health
  • Acts as an anti-carcinogenic

Note: The FDA suggests that our body needs about 12mg of copper a day. This means that you can drink about two to three glasses of water from this copper vessel to reap its benefits. Do not overdo this or it may be harmful for your well-being.
