I have come across a few raiskAs who are ardent admirers of Sri. M. D. Ramanathan, in Sing. Chennai.

Here is a one hour concert, held before a selected audience. It starts with the NavarAgamAlikA varnam. Other songs selected are

compositions of the carnatic music trinity - Dheekshidhar's 'BhudhamAsrayAmi' in NAtakuranji, ThyAgarAja swami's 'Nee Dhaya'

in ThOdi, Shyama sasthri's 'TrilOka mAthA nannu' in Paras and Thyagarajar swami's 'RAma kathA sudha' in MadhyamAvathi.


A cute and crisp concert! I enjoyed the small chit chats in between the songs also! :)

I will leave it to the historians and philosophers to find out whether kathana kuthukalam raagam came first or ode to joy (Beethoven's 9th symphony Symphony No. 9 (Beethoven) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) came first. To my sagging spirit, both of them are antidotes and I enjoy listening to them. People may be familiar with Patnam Subramania Iyer's composition Raghuvamsa sudha in kathanakuthUkalam ( Patnam Subramania Iyer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ).

i was listening to Pibare Ramarasam in ahir bhairav raagam (i prefer this to the original ragam yamuna kalyani)

I was wondering if S. Janaki's devotional song Vallamai Ullavan Neethaanaiya is also in ahir bhairav as it sounds similar to me?
 
So is it a mix of raagas then? Cos for my ears at least Vallamai Ullavan sounds alot like Pibare Ramarasam. i mean the 1st line...

Dear Amala,

The rAgam ChakravAgam in Carnatic classical is the parallel rAgam of Ahir Bhairavi. They have one and the same notes.

The way we sing differs. There are many glides and special phrases to make any rAgam unique, be it Carnatic or Hidustani.

We do not have the 'S R G M P' prayOgam in Ahir Bahiravi. You can notice the Ri with a nice glide and plain Ma and Da as

Ahir Bhairavi specials. I think now you got the point!


There is an interesting anecdote about the rAgam Suddha SAvEri. Once Sri. Hariprasad Chaurasia told Sri. Ramani that

there is a beautiful rAg by name Durga in their system. Sri. Ramani replied that there is a parallel rAgam in Carnatic music

and played 'DhArini thelusukonti' composed by Saint Thyagaraja. Hearing the beautiful and intricate sangathis in that song,

Sri. Chaurasia was spell bound!! :thumb:
