Last week in one of the Tamil TV Channels there was a discussion/debate titled 'Thamizh kalaachaaram seerkedugiradhaa?'
One of the elements of culture they were pointing out mostly was dress worn by youngsters.
One of the panelists, a protagonist for thamizh panpaadu claimed that wearing of jeans and invasion of northern and western dress was cause of 'kalaachaara seerkedu'.
He also maintained that 'kalaachaaram' is wedded to Tamil language and he mentioned many points from 'silappadhigaaram' etc.
The defendants were maintaining their standpoint and viewpoint mostly by saying, 'evolution and change is a part of every culture and so is tamil culture.
No one ever defined in finer terms with vivid examples 'what is thamizhar panpaadu'. jallikattu was also dragged in owing to the season and also the numerous debates in media on its ban.
IMHO, jeans and t-shirt is worn as casual dress outside of home for the simple reason that it is the most convenient dress, especially for travel in trains and buses.
With a veshti (or paavaadai dhaavani for women) it is difficult to travel in trains and buses, especially pallavan bus when it is crowded with people on footboard.
For women, the most comfortable dress is chudidhaar kameez as formal dress when travelling to office.
The discussion also centred around, among many other things, on adulteration of tamil language with foreign words viz Sanskrit, hindi, English etc, on food habits of tamilians.
I can hardly understand how evolution and change to comfortable styles of living is an erosion/deterioration/decay of thamizh panpaadu. Someone please explain.
Moreover there are numerous practices of yester-centuries tamilians which we do not follow. We are not even aware of many.
is panpaadu/kalaachaaram only about dress, festival and food habits?
The protagonist was speaking as if exclusive Brahmin practices are alien to thamizh panpaadu.
One of the panelists even rebuked the conservative protagonist saying there is no such thing as Aryan-dravida divide, that Aryan refers to race and dravida refers to a geographical area.
what are the unique/salient features of thamizh panpaadu and thamizh kalaacharan?
how can tamil language influence panpaadu/kalaachaaram?
