Can some one let me know valid reason for not conducting Tamil Brahmin marriage in Margazhi month.

Is there a scientific reason?

In the Gita, Shree Krishna says that among the months I am Margasirsha.

Most probably the month is conducive for spiritual activities.

Its usually around November -December( which is late autumn..autumn ends on winter solstice.
The meaning of
Margasirsha ..Marga( path), sirsha( top most, vertex).

If we observe the nature of autumn, the trees start to shed their leaves, then in the Northern Hemisphere animals sense winter is approaching..the prepare to store food and some go into hibernation.

It looks as if nature gets ready to sing a silent tune of non attachment in preparation to go into a state of Samadhi, to shed all the leaves of desire and prepare for a state of being dormant which seems bare to the world but full of potential to re-emerge in Spring.

Going by this it does seem the human too should sense that nature wants us to slow down in this month and experience the samadhi like state hence we focus on spirituality in this month.

What I wrote is my personal observation.
I have stopped looking at books for answers because sometimes knowledge is out in the open, we could sense it by being in tune in nature.
Science is actually an experience but sadly we mostly know it as intellectualization.

Marriage is (I suppose) auspicious so why can it be not performed in Margai month. Krishna in Geeta said Margai is auspicious, he did not say you cannot marry in that month. So the reference to Krishna in this context is red herring (misleading).

For promoting the longevity of marriage and make it more hassle-free, it was traditionally believed that every auspicious occasion should take place on a certain date and at a certain time. However, the variations in beliefs are different in different places throughout India across regions and religions.

Also, on a wider perspective- love has no season.

If you are getting married to the right person, the one you love, every season and every month of the year can be auspicious.

Fair enough...but I dont really have the map of ancient India when the world was a big mass of land and how high was it up in the Northern Hemisphere..so no idea what was the temperature back then and how significant Autumn was.

Ancient people lived aligned with nature and autumn is a season where one has to store food, ferment food to pull through winter when the land was not fertile till spring.

So would people want to actually get married and over indulge in the 'as it is lesser grains and food' available instead of saving it for winter?

So we might not know what were the exact reasons since the mechanics behind any practice isnt passed down and usually only the tradition is inherited and since it was divorced from the explanation of the underlying reason ,certain practices began to be termed as superstition.

But there is one thing we can all agree upon.
To sum it up both you and I are not sure why marriages are not conducted in Margasirsha.
We might not know what affects who.
So best is we dont discourage anyone trying to follow it.


Coming to the Southern Hemisphere countries..autumn is surely not Margasirsha.
Since seasons differ, the rules could differ.

Shree Krishna was introducing spirituality in the Gita through various modes of Yoga.
Hence we didnt find marriage mentioned.

Nowadays destination weddings and wedding season in any part of the world do not make sense.
If you have money and do not mind spending it, you can find a venue and a sastrigal to conduct it any time of day or year.

We had a Tamil wedding on a Sunday at 4:00 PM muhurtam, and the sastrigal had an explanation for it.

What was inconvenient 50 years ago is not inconvenient anymore.

We were in India in March well before the Mango season. But Amazon was able to deliver Alphanso, Biganpalli, and other types of mango well before the season.

So if you have the resources you can fix the marriage anywhere and anytime. Secondly, if you pay for your guests they will not complain about inauspiciousness. The rest of the society does not matter.

As the cost of LED lights and other technology drops, more produce will be grown indoors.

The reason for not conducting marriages during Margazhi (not strictly followed by all Hindu communities) is bit philosophical - the reason is that the month is the dawn period for Devas and people do not want to engage in any other auspicious activities other than worship of Gods. They want to stay away at least in this month from worldly affairs and concentrate only on worship and religious activities like chanting of Thiruppavai.

The Sabarimala Mandala Vratham for going to Sabarimala temple also ends in this month. It is also one reason why for not conducting auspicious functions.
