Should makeup be banned?

Dog days of summer. Slow news cycle. Time for another controversial thread.

I was watching a fairly serious financial news TV program, which has a female host and a number of guests both male and female. The host is a pleasant looking middle-aged woman, who has been doing this for a few years. She is quite competent.

However that day I noticed that her cheeks were distinctly pink, due to the obvious application of makeup. I started thinking, why does she feel that she has to do this? Her male co-host is also well-groomed, but no foreign color on his face. Do pink cheeks for a female make any difference to the quality of her work? Or do they give her some subtle advantage?

Perhaps the Taliban and the extreme feminists were right on this one. Time to bury your makeup?

"Banning" is a very bad word. She has a right to fudge her face anyway she likes. Actually, the TV studios have their own makeup rooms and they "touch up" faces before they are shown on TV, so you may want to blame the Beautician employed by them.

Come to think of it, even gods and goddesses are put through makeups with flowers and jewelry all year long! Its ok, it is all for fun.

Dr Barani,

You are right. All photos and paintings of divinities have "make up" even for the males!!!
Most of us woman here go to work with a just a touch of lipstick that matches with the dress we wear to look groomed thats all.
No one really wears heavy make up to work unless they are models or actors at work.

When I first saw this thread i thought it was a call to ban make up brands that conduct animal testing but it was dear Biswa again..from cars to make up now.
May be I should start a controversial thread from the medico-social point of view "Should Viagra be banned" and I wonder what will the rising response be?

A decade from now Viagra may really get banned for increasing heart problems in senior people. Any single point interference with a metabolic pathway will result in side effects. This is the bane of western medicine. Native medicines often try to modulate the entire metabolic pathway to reduce such side effects.

Back to the topic... women in India rarely apply lipstick. A few management category do, but, by and large, cosmetics in India is mainly confined to facial powder. And personally I don't like to see powder on their faces. The glitter from natural skin gets dried up by the talcum powder and only dry broken skin is visible. All women, Take note! Men don't care about your complexion, they care more about a healthy looking skin! Stop tampering with your face and it will automatically look good!

Dr Barani,

Now its our turn to say; Note All men!!!

We woman dont like to see greasy faces with stubble on faces. There is nothing like a well groomed, clean shaven face that is free from traces of grease with a light hint of after shave.
Most men take personal grooming too lightly and soak their hair with greasy hair creams.

BTW: Dear Dr Barani I have to give you a complement. You look well groomed in your pic.

I just remembered...in 2002 once I heared a Malaysian Tamil Radio Talk Show where a bunch of man got togather and discussed if 'Sticker Pottu should be Banned".
They went on and on about it giving various reasons that woman are moving away from traditional KumKum.
Also mentioned that Pottu has become an accessory and not anymore to glorify the married status and also one guy said that in the process of making sticker pottu black pigment is also used and later other colors are added and this is not good cos a married woman should not use anything that contains black pigment.

I found that whole talk show really weird.

I think a "tilak" on the forehead really adds a new dimension to the looks of women. That is much better than all those metallic hangings through sensory organs! The only time I like ornaments on women is when they perform Bharatanatyam or some such special event. Other times, may a small ear stud is ok, but anything big frequently enlarges the hole from where they hang and makes it less charming.

Anyway for me my only ornament is my Silver Aum worn on my neck.

It is time that our society approve heavy make-up for men who think that they have all the right to present themselves in a disgusting attire and .... We should have had it in our tradition in the days of our bejeweled and well decorated Kings. Men these days attempt it secretly on the occasion of their wedding. Ear piercing has now become very common and it will be good if the men are educated as to how to do it to look good (for many sport ear studs in a threatening fashions!). I think a regular habit of make-up will give a good make-up to the manners and personality of our men.

Yes you are right.
Some man should consider permanent removal of hair that grows from ears and some amount of proper guidance for a good hairstyle.
Grooming improves self confidence and its high time males improve too.

It nice to see the FilmFare awards events in the South improving these days with the new actors taking the trouble to look good.Bollywood males take the trouble to look their shining best and its high time south guys take the interest too.

Hey guys I have a role model for all of you..and its Hot TB Ganesh Venkatraman.

My mother says that women were given ornaments for two reasons - for unmarried women to make them look more beautiful - for married women to take some wealth with them just in case they get abandoned or widowed (since in old days women were going away from their parents, and wealth in those days was primarily agriculture lands that can't be divided and exported to the next village). So, there is a historical reason why women were given gold.

If women want to win the power back they must demand that men move into their homes after marriage, not vice versa!

Tell me about it..me being the only daughter my mum had stacked up so much gold and she is at her wits now cos I dont like gold and its just lying in the bank unused.
I will pass it to my future DIL if my son decides to marry or donate it off before I die.
Dont know why... Gold never really meant anything to me.

namaste.

The very idiom 'make up' indicates 'making up' for some deficiency. But then every woman, fair-skinned or not-so-fair-skinned, does apply some form of make-up in an effort to enhance her looks. This has been the practice from time immemorial, and men are not exceptions to it.

• But then, the make-up we give the portraits of our Gods is actually made up of our ignorance, although in one sense it is true that when the NirguNa Brahman takes a he/she form and becomes SaguNa Brahman, it does wear a make-up.

• As DrBarani has observed, any make-up that could enhance the natural shine of skin, could be welcome and healthy. I found a Sanskrit saying on the subject, in Apte's Dictionary that is interesting:

त्वया अलावण्यदोषः सदाचरेण प्रतिविधेयः

tvayA alAvaNyadoShaH sadAchareNa pratividheyaH
"You should make up for want of beauty by being good."

Thus, with character one can shine better than with cosmetics.

• Again, man or woman, applying cosmetics all over the body might lead to health hazards, as the following message I received in mail long back, indicates:

Cancer News from John Hopkins Hospital

A friend of mine who has received Chemotherapy and is now receiving Radiation at Princess Margaret Hospital for breast cancer phoned me today to tell me what they have now found about causes of breast cancer. And then tonight, I got the same information from another friend in Montreal.

The person with the cancer has been told by the hospital to only use deodorant rather than an anti-perspirant. The reasons are outlined in the letter below. Anyway, I thought it was worth sharing.

Ladies!! Be aware! Gentlemen, pass this on to the ladies in your life!

Sometime ago, I attended a Breast-Cancer-Awareness seminar. During the Q&A period, asked why the most common area for breast cancer was near the armpit. My question could not be answered at that time. The leading cause of breast cancer is the use of anti-perspirant. What? A concentration of toxins leads to cell mutations, aka cancer. Yes, ANTI-PERSPIRANT. Most of the products out there are an antiperspirant/deodorant combination, so go home and check. Deodorant is fine, anti-perspirant is not. Here's why:

The human body has a few areas that it uses to purge toxins from the body; behind the knees, behind the ears, the groin area, and armpits. The toxins are purged in the form of perspiration. Anti-perspirant, as the name clearly indicates, prevents you from perspiring, thereby inhibiting the body from purging toxins from below the armpits. These toxins do not just magically disappear. Instead, the body deposits them in the lymph nodes below the arms since it cannot sweat them out. Nearly all breast cancer tumours occur in the upper outside quadrant of the breast area. This is precisely where the lymph nodes are located. Additionally, men are less likely (but not completely exempt) to develop breast cancer prompted by anti-perspirant usage because most of the anti-perspirant product is caught in their hair and is not directly applied to the skin. Women who apply anti-perspirant right after shaving increase the risk further because shaving causes almost imperceptible nicks in the skin, which give the chemicals entrance into the body from the armpit area.

We have the legacy of haridrA--turmeric and shikhaikkAi--soap nut powder, and a host of other herbals to enhance our tejas--shine of beauty, without side effects. How I wish that the Indian corporate research sector initiates intensive study and research of our native make-up techniques using our herbal legacy and make the products designed using them available to us at costs much cheaper than the cosmetics of the West, besides guarding their work with adequate patent rights.

In my view, make up for men or women is OK or not OK depending on the reason for its use and the attitude that goes with it.

If it is to cover up insecurities of any kind then let us recognize that there is billion dollar industry waiting to give you more insecurities so that you spend money on their products.

However if one were to have an attitude that your body is like a temple and taking care of it is done with a worshipful attitude then it is fine.

For some woman wearing the dot on the forehead is a mark of not being treated equally in which case they should not wear it, in my view.

If one were to wear for the right reasons then it is fine.

My daughter who is born and raised in USA and is doing engineering PhD at MIT wears Bindi regularly if not everyday. We did not force any such habits while she was growing up. Once she had the right understanding she chose to do this on entering college on her own (and not during high school days as much).

Well, it didn't matter to you because you gained some valuable skill/profession that is worth lot more than the gold, but most women aren't that fortunate in India. Take my own home for example - my mother is even more intelligent than I am (well, I consider myself intelligent among my extended family circle), but she never got the opportunity to go to college or build a career. She was married at her tender age of 18. My father is an innocent TB who trusts everything in outer world. If only my mother had gone to work and my father had stayed in Kitchen, their life might have been far better!

Himalaya Herbals have come up with an Organic Range which uses only traditional herbal based items but the price if just too high for the common man to afford.
The Organic Range of Shampoo is free from Sodium Lauryl Sulphate.
Soap Nut and Mulltani Mitti is used as the base for the shampoo.

Good stuff but too pricey!!

I keep joking to my husband that he is lucky he married me cos I dont wear jewellery so he need not spend money for gold on me.

I see most woman here every Diwali will be dragging their hubbys to the gold shop to get the latest design gold stuff.

As an aside, if the FBI is preparing dossiers of personal information (perhaps they are doing it already), based on this forum, I think that the dossier on ReNu will be thickest!

We all love personal information, but is there a way to exchange them without the potential hazards of the Internet?

Dear Sri "Biswa",

Yes, appearance of a person in public makes a lot of difference. That is called "personality" which has its origin from the word in Latin "Persona" meaning "Mask".
The recent visit of Pakistan's youngest and first woman Foreign Minister pretty Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar got the media attention by her beauty and elegance. This 34 year old mother of three children is a lover of mountain trekking and Polo enthusiast. She is considered extremely stylish, but conservative in her dressing. "Meanwhile, all the talk about her fashion sense made some wonder if the focus is being taken away from what she’s in India for". That is the effect of Personality. It enhances the intelligence of the person.

Regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

I think make up for women does not do the job of enhancing their beauty but complementing it. So my opinion is women's beauty is more complete when they do a make up.
